excellent news, especially for me since i decided to cancel my contract pre order and just get the play sim free

I have always dabbed into the root. My N1 was fantastic rooted and running CM. No need to now its on gingerbread.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App

I'm not getting a sim lock free play, hopefully the simlocked devices will be rooted soon to.

I was going to wait for the o2 version in white but glad I just ordered off play.com

Excellent news. Wish more manufacturers would follow suit. Next time my contracts up , I'll seriously consider SE now if they are going to continue with this.

Im used to the freedom with my n1. Its brilliant when you can do anything with your phone.

Any word if the US bound one (for Verizon) will have locked bootloader?
My guess is yes, but I really don't want to be right in this case...

Waitin for the CDMA version

The CDMA bootloader unlock is finished, check the Development section.

Help me get optus to answer my question

We were promised by Optus that mid November we would get Froyo. Hit them up on @Optus on twitter or their support email. If more people start asking then we will actually get an answer.
At the rate it's going, we might well be the very last people in the world to get Froyo for our devices, even though we were some of the earliest adopters for the handset.
Keep us updated on your progress mate. I don;t have a twitter account but am in the same books as you.
I have rung them a few times but they are less then knowledgeable with a response.
Most of them you talk to don't have a clue what your talking about. ie. Firmware what?
Then try and direct you to call Samsung.
The last time I spoke to Samsung in Australia they couldn't provide any details at all.
A sad sad state of affairs to be sure.
This was posted on another forum I'm a member of (not phone related, just a Galaxy S thread). Sorry, I don't have links to back it up, so take it with a grain of salt.
From Optus Business Blog: dt. 16/11
.................
News: Android 2.2 for Samsung Galaxy S is now available
16/11/2010
Owners of Samsung's Galaxy S line of phones have been patiently waiting for the Android 2.2 update that many other Android owners have had for months, and now it looks like the wait may finally be over.
Samsung has announced that later tonight, at 8:00 PM, a download will become available to SamsungMobile.com that will be compatible with all Galaxy S devices, upgrading them to Android 2.2.
The news comes after Google and Samsung have continuously been dodgy about details regarding the update for Samsung's Android-powered smartphones. To date, the only handsets to receive the upgrade have been phones manufactured by other companies. Only about a quarter of all Android users have upgraded their device to the latest OS.
Many of those who haven't upgraded simply have a phone that is too outdated to receive it. But the Galaxy S platform is one of the most technically adept on the market right now and is more than capable of running Froyo.
Exactly what has been causing the hold-up is anyone's guess, but it's been a real problem for Samsung as it tries to market the devices.
Android 2.2 brings with it features like full browser support for the latest Flash video standard, the ability to use your phone as a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot, and enhanced voice controls for all aspects of the device. It should be a welcome addition to the Galaxy S family.

This is from a US news website called TGDaily which was talking about the update but he missed the mark for sure.
It's not specifically related to OPTUS at all but a general comment stating Froyo was now available.
When you go to the Samsungmobile.com website you have to pick a region.
Australia takes you to that regions site and the Kies version here is way way old 1.5.1.10083
When you install this Kies, it will prompt you to update to the newer version.
BUT.......no Froyo.
Sad sad sad.

All of this was proven to be wrong, and was copied from a blog entry from the day before from TG Daily.
It was promptly removed from the Optus blog.
Optus made an announcement on Twitter that Samsung delivered to them around 01/11/2010 the new firmware. They had to create their optus customisation for it and intended to release it mid november. Now its the 19th and it still isn't out. I figure anyone who cares should go put a question to them @Optus or their support email until we get an answer.
I don't mind the wait as such, it's just that I want to know what they are doing. I hate "two more weeks". IF they could say we are having trouble getting the widget to work and we want that working before we release, then OK, but silence is just downright frustrating!
Why the heck do you need the Optus customisations for? It's not like you get extra wallpapers or optimisations just a bunch of useless widgets and shortcuts but whatever.
I hope official firmware from Optus is better than Nordic JPA version.
I have JPA Froyo on my optus GS via Reg hack. Wifi is ify and phone lags...
Put same app side by side on GS and iPhone, GS one is slow.
EG. Kids only want to use iPhone for Talking Tomcat because it does not miss every second word.
Sad!
I was in the same boat as you guys not long ago. Waiting for Optus to release their modified firmware, checking kies day to day. I got kinda fed up waiting, figured that the firmware is of course just going to include all the optus and samsung bloatware to slow down the phone. Not to mention relying on kies to work properly.
So in the end I just put Dark's Rom on. works fantastically really. learnt how to do it (easy guide in his thread) and actually did it in under half an hour. the actual doing it only takes like 10 minutes. I know it's not for everyone, but i'm so glad I decided to go down that route rather than rely on optus.
I don't understand why you guys have to know what's going on all the time.. Optus have stated that their release intention is "By the end of November", for quite some time now.
Knowing exactly what's going on won't get you the release any faster, it serves no purpose but to waste their time by answering the children in the back seat "Are we there yet, are we there yet, are we there yet".
We'll get there, when we get there.
Perhaps if December comes along, and it's still not release, THEN start nagging.
Or just abandon all hope and flash a rom! I mean you are on xda after all.
I was waiting with my old eclair rom but went and flashed docs rom. I only regret not doing it sooner.

Agreed, Custom firmware is guaranteed better than Optus bloatware.
Insanity, Spike Speedy v3 and Darky's v4.1 are all perfect for quick, fully optimised and bloat-free roms.

"Update: we just got 2.2 from Samsung & testing it now so it's ready for you guys. Aiming to make download available early-to-mid November."

@JoeeSTACK_ Not yet Joseph. We're expecting it to be available late November. Cheers - Julz

There's no point spamming them on Twitter with the SAME QUESTION over and over again 50000 times, because I highly doubt busying up the customer support team will have any impact on whatever development team is modifying the firmware for release.

Alot of custom firmware comes with the Optus APN, the one I'm using at the moment came with it.
Which is Insanity.. Very barebones but you can easily install whatever stock apk's you want via the included link he gave to them on his thread.
If you want the Optus apk's (Why on earth you would is beyond me..) I'm almost sure you could get them off optus zoo, just give Optus a call and find out if you have any troubles I guess.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9264973&postcount=1
Edit: Also the Optus APN info can easily be added to the phone manually by going to Wireless and network > mobile networks > Access Point Names > press menu button, new APN
and the information for the APN (and all other Aussy ones) is here: http://ausdroid.net/apns/
I'm not neccessarily after a date, I want a reason. If they would just let us know that they really are still working on it, they aren't stuck with a resource problem or something like that then OK. I just hate it when they leave you with no news.
And my original statement still stands that we may well be the last carrier to actually get Froyo. I want the official one because I'm going into Optus if it doesn't fix the GPS for a warranty claim.
I want to know the date so I know when I can use the phone to it's full ability as advertised!

X10 Bootloader Bad News Folks

I just had some bad news : requesting open bootloader for X10
Code:
SEAnswers Sony Ericsson Global
@hagisbasheruk There are no plans for that as of now.
So what do you say, do we get unlocked bootloader ?
No UNLOCKED bootloader as of now, doesn't rule out a future unlock though so mabey we need a new petition started to get this feature for our great developers on here.
Bear in mind that there will be no special sony erricson features on the 2.3.3 they are dropping all that. So my feeling says it might be unlocked.
Also I emailed sony netherlands a week a go with the same question about the bootloader of 2.3.3. They said 2.1 was the final version. I think they only know how to random press the keyboard and hit enter.
Yeah, half of these places you contact have no idea. In fact sometimes we probably know more than them!
Don't put your hope into this, one the GB update hasn't released yet, not everyone in the company knows about it (yet).
SE already stated that the bootloader will not be unlockable for the X10 due to contracts and legal obligations already in place with 3rd party vendors.
even if you [SE] unlock the bootloader after the 2.3, then the bootloader can be unlocked for 1.6 and 2.1 devices leaving 3rd party apps (at&t bloatware, moxier, etc) vulnerable.

Yes just like we won't get a 2.3 update. They announced 2.3 after the bootloader unlocking program. So im sure we get unlocked.

uh, read SE's blog, it's listed specifically. all new devices will get bootloaders unlocked. X10, x10 mini, x8, etc, will not due to existing contracts in place and legal obligations.
they are going to update to 2.3 due to google's recent news release about pushing manufacturers to continue development on existing devices and stopping them from abondoning the user base.
so yes, SE previously stated that GB wouldn't come to the X10, but google is pushing manufactures to continue updates when possible on devices.
it has nothing to do with sony's abilities, but rather their obligations.

It may not be true but don't you think this is the reason why only the Generic unlocked X10s are getting the update. There are no plans to update carrier locked X10s..

not legally, which means unlikely.
The bootloader has been bypassed anyway, why does this even matter?
Because it's way better then just having it bypassed.
Do you actually believe that Sony Ericsson will give you info about something that they not have made official yet? You can ask them anything and they will give you a similarly answer. You will see that the bootloader will be unlocked.

I think we need proof.
First there wouldnt be 2.1. Now there is.
First there wouldnt be 2.3, there will be.
That are the only facts where you can resource your data out.
Several attempts of me trying to get a clear awnser from SE failed. They allways tell you something else.

Oh really, why exactly is it better?
The reason we wanted the bootloader cracked was to custom kernels, this is possible through bypass.
If the bootloader was cracked/open, we'd have the exact same kernels with the exact same progress/bugs as we do now. I fail to see the benefit, but I might be missing something.
If anything, bypass is better, as if something goes REALLY wrong then you can still revert back to stock quite easily.
To me it smacks of just wanting to say that it's been cracked as some sort of nerd "status" symbol, although if anyone can prove otherwise then fair enough

Bootloader Unlocked ??

Hello gyus. I just want to know why doesn't SE unlock xperia x8 bootloader.Sorry, I'm a newbie
Sent from my X8 using XDA App
Well, pretty useless topic.
I think they just wanna be in control and they probably don't want people to mess with their devices, because of warranty.
Sony always did that and always will, not only with phones.
Okay.thank you mr.hat

Not for X8 yet.
http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/browse_thread/thread/e3748ae6f8f4925b#
Their page on groups, perhaps if we go there and claim the bootloader unlock for our phone they might listen to us... or not:
SE on Facebook said:
There are not plans for Xperia X8 to get 2.2 or later unfortunately, and there's no plan to unlock the boot loader for it either.
The boot loader decision was taken not so long ago and it goes for the newer phone's released. For the already released phone (prior to this decision) it would not be possible since it would violate agreements.

uk atrix update mid-november

This might be old news (actually stated on 11 october), but I saw this today.
Motorola has stated that they will release the 2.3 update to (unlocked) UK Atrix in mid-november
Source
Is sure that the new update unlock the bootloader also for EU version?
I think I read that it will stay locked down. Not sure if its only locked so we only need to do the fastboot unlock, or if we still need IHOP..
If you read the whole thread it's getting very heated - Personally I don't think motorola will give UK the GB update.
The out of datrix will be the last motorola I ever buy. Never ever again. They can go out of business for all I care.

That sucks that you guys have had to wait so long. It doesn't make sense since we've had gb here in the states for a few months and you haven't.
Wonder what the hold up is. Hope you don't have to wait much longer as it really makes the phone feel like a new device.

The worst part is that they stated that it would be released at the same time in the US and the UK..

Listen I get that you are upset, but there's no way that any current Android phone is gonna have an entire lifecycle without at least one major update.
Don't get me wrong, its BS that you had to wait even this long for GB, but for what it's worth I chose to stay on Froyo for the longer stock battery life.
I'm gonna remain there until I get a more definitive answer in regards to ICS being OTA or CM for the Atrix...

Makes no difference to me, I've rooted & unlocked the boot loader(another stupid motorola trait) and have Gb on my Atrix.
Still won't be buying another motokak - just waiting for the Galaxy nexus to be delivered & I can consign the Atrix to the dustbin where it belongs.
Apparently it should come to all UK users (t-mobile, unlocked etc)
source
hopefully will be able to rip the radio from the update, as im sure there will be a new one, and for people who have unlocked their bootloader it might not be safe to do the OTA, like was the case for AT&T users.

Sony's New York Press Conference

This thread is dedicated to the North American variant of the Xperia Z3 and the upcoming Sony press conference in New York on October 9th.
Any rumors, news or information should go in here.
I'm really hoping Sony announce a 32GB version of the Z3 for NA.
Verizon version is also rumored to have wireless charging. Not sure how that's possible unless they are planning on offering the wireless charging case with the purchase of the Z3 which makes sense.
EDIT:
