Atrix vs Bootloader issue ... - Atrix 4G General

My iPhone 3GS is dead, time for an upgrade, wanted to jump in the Android world, I found the spec of the Atrix really interesting but the Bootloader issues is really turning me off ... There is usually so much cool stuff out with new ROMS ... I also tend to stay has far has I can from Carrier's crap, so with that bootloader restriction it's pretty a dead project ATM ... I was wondering if we can hope anything in a short time frame (+- 6 months) ?
Thanks

I'm getting an Atrix soon and as excited as I am, I'd probably recommend getting a Nexus S or an HTC phone. You'll get the flagship Android experience with the Nexus S (or 4G if you can wait) or the HTC Sense experience which is what I originally thought Android was all about. With HTC phones though, if you want you can go with an ASOP ROM and go completely stock, or use the HTC Sense framework which really kicks the user experience up.
I'm a bit of a spec junkie but I surprisingly loved the Sense experience my HTC Desire Z provided me with. I previously owned a Sony Xperia X10 which disgusted me and really made my initial Android experience pretty sour.. missed out on Flash, missed out on updates, missed out on a ton of things and had lots of bugs. Stock Android or something HTC would probably be the way to go with the Atrix's bootloader uncertainty.
The devs on these boards are nothing short of amazing, but Motorola's really got this clamped down. I think being an Android virgin you could easily enjoy the Atrix, but stock Android and Sense are really awesome and I think everyone should experience it at least once.

I got an eLocity A7, I loved the snap of Tegra2 and Atrix specs looked really nice. I've been in the Windows Mobile 6 scene and always hated the junk carriers installed on cell phone. I always enjoyed Sense or Stock (6.5 at the time ...).
I'll stay away from Atrix until I see ROM devs ... the Desire HD seemed really nice but I'm also temped by the iPhone 4gs or 5 with the HTC Flyer combo =)
Thx for the input !

You can do just as much much with the atrix as you could with a jailbroken iphone. Coming from an iphone myself the bootloader is not a big deal. Everyone is jealous of my phone including all my iphone and evo friends. Opening up the bootloader would be extra icing on the cake.

Which would argue not a whole lot, hence them not liking iOS and loving Android.
Yes, for the most part you have tons of customization, but without full access you're missing out on kernelsand tthe option ti have a different version of Android all together.

Roms are not the issue. We have roms for the Atrix.

haha that's a great analogy.

I am interested in the Atrix as well, when it comes out. However, I would be interested in flashing a stock gingerbread. As far as I understood the discussion here, the bootloader is closed, which means, if I understand correctly, will avoid the installation of another rom, won't it?

Should i buy this phone now or not?

I see that now one of the biggest moders like cyanogenmod and modaco are not developing things for this phone.
And the bootloader is still not hacked.
Im searching for a phone with big community, that have non stop roms and everything.. you know.. a good android phone.
I just don't know what to do, i need to buy a phone from USA now.
The only option is the Atrix ? And its sucks right now..
What to do ?
It doesn't suck.... you're just being super dranmatic

If non stop roms is what makes a phone good to you, look elsewhere. This phone does not need an unlocked bootloader to kick most other phones asses.

this phone is not for you. wait for the nexus S on at&t, the lg thrill, or the samsung galaxy S 2
Idk if this is an at&t specific thing but the thunderbolt looks really nice and if it is at&t the inspire isn't bad at all, I personally love my atrix, I came from a hd2(which was constant flashing) and a nexus one(which I flashed acouple of custom roms due to stability issues), but if the phone works right and does everything you want it to there's no real reason to want custom roms

modaco already started its support for optimus 2x, and paul is really making good results for cwm.. the problem is that g2x is not out yet in the usa and has no confirmed release date yet.
i suggest just wait for possible phones that would be hack friendly w/ no locked bootloaders since you want lots of custom roms, probably g2x, samsung galaxy s2, lg thrill, the next nexus(nexus 2 probably?) or "some" phones from htc(i heard htc is going to be strict w/ their bootloaders on their future phones also )?

Nexus S? G2 ?
One core devices ....
So to buy the Atrix?
In the future there will be a gingerbread update right? and 1080p too?
Also it will be a strong and good devices without many roms and kernels...
And maybe it will be fully hacked ha.?
What you say.. buy it or not?
I say buy it and I agree with the people above in support of buying it as well.
You can by mine off of me if you'd like

I guarantee you the nexus s along with others will contend with this phone in the long run. The atrix has lost more than once in dogfights and comparisons. Everyone makes it seem like if u have a single core phone than your simply outdated its just a matter of people wanting to play catch up. There are only 3 dual cores on the market right now.and most of the phones out now g2 nexus s inspire and 4g vibrant are considered better once rooted and hacked.

if u feel like its ur only chance to get one now than shoot but there is barely any support for it kernel and rom wise. 2 roms are in developelment but they dont really enable much. Its a dual core whip out a rom or kernel that will blow other phones socks off. Have me running at 4.4ghz or something. My friends hacked mytouch 4g runs faster than the atrix and its single core lol

I say go ahead and buy it. I originally came from the Evo and Sprint. I originally got the Atrix but then I swapped it for the Inspire. A couple weeks later I swappd the Inspire for an iPhone 4. About two days after, that I swapped the iPhone 4 back in for another Atrix. So I basically had a chance to try out 3 of the biggest phones on Att. The reason I came back to the Atrix is because first of all, its dual core. Even though the Inspire is a great phone, its single core. Its apps that's being developed that'll only work on dual core phones.
Another reason is speed and battery life. Both of which is really great on tge Atrix and blows away a lot of other phones.
Notice in my post I meantioned that I had the iphone for 2 days....that was all I needed to know I wasn't keeping that boring device.
I think the Atrix is already a great device despite not being able to flash rims at the current moment. Like I previously said the battery life is great and the speed is amazing. So if you don't mind running stock, then go for it.

Buy the inspire. I bought mine as a backup and haven't really touched it since installing CM7. Atrix runs fine with stock. I don't understand your need for roms when it performs fine out of the box.

Don't just rush and get tgw Atrix, although I don't think we know enough to properly help you.
You said you need to get it "now", we know that, but how long are you going to be locked into the phone?
If you are just getting it foe the specs, you should really look at how you use the phone and see if dual cores is really something you want, because in my opinion (and I see myself as a heavy user) it isn't needed.
Unless you are playing Dungeon Defenders or other high end games, top tier single cored phones are good enough, don't just buy innto the hype of the specs tthat I and a lot of others did.
I got mine the day it came our here, used it, loved iit, compared to my Nexus 1 and Captivate, then took it back to ATT.
The 2.3.3 Nexus is just as fast doing pretty much everything; the battery lasts all day as well.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA Premium App
You cannot legitimately compare the performance of two phones running different operating systems. The results are meaningless. Wait until the Atrix is running 2.3 and then it will be useful. I disagree that the single core phones will be equivalent under those conditions.

Motorollla could have waited until they got 2.3 on the phone but they chose to release it now and that's what we are comparing it to
Just because it is being compared aand falling up short because of the os doesn't mean you can just disregard the test all together.

Went from a nexus one to a samsung vibrant to atrix. Atrix by far has been the best experience so far. Zero lag.
The n1 had a ****ed up touch screen, even after replacement
Vibrant had awful awful gps and considerable lag compared to n1
Atrix has solved all these problems, and I could give a **** about specs. This phone just works. Just try it before you buy it. I used to load custom roms on ntt previous two phones, but that was because they needed augmentation, this phone does not. Really the build quality is right up there with the n1 or the incredible. My phone has been on for 1 day and five hours, still got ten percent battery left. Been connected to wifi the entire time. I bought the phone yesterday so you know I've been using it.
Amazing, love the high resolution, so much more breathing room. My 2 cents.

Precisely.
The reason why a lot of people have gone towards the g2x is the big support from the Dev community. Unlocked bootloader + source has already been released.
Not to mention sg2 has no release date for the u.s, others couldn't wait.

These are reasons why people in this community would buy or take a long look at it, seems like a good phone and most reviews are quite good. Samsung and there slow updates, and lack of source make a tough phone for developers and now that HTC and Moto are locking their bootloaders, its gets harder to dev's to make the fun they make.

Hands Down SGS2, I love being able to tinker, but even if I cant I love samsung hardware. I gotta say for support though, LG or HTC
I never understood the craze over the g2. Is there something with current roms that you don't like?
Idk about craze over the G2, but it is a fantastic phone, especially for emulators in my opinion, but thats because you can get some nice clocks outta the CPU. I got one (well, not mine, I tinker with my friends) running @ 1.8ghz, and thats pretty sexy playing OOT on there perfectly (almost) In regards to roms, you mean for vibrant? I have no problem with anyones work =) just prefer my own I'm working on =P
I understand that the G2, and all second gen snapdragons for that matter, can clock high, but is there any application other than emulators that use that power. After all, developers have to take care of both the low and high end phones. Plus, you are killing the lifespan of the CPU and lowering your battery life.
The vibrant runs fine on 2.2.1 and is helped by Samsung's GPU acceleration implementation in both the launcher and browser. And once the i9000 gingerbread roms start rolling out, we can only expect greater speed and stability.
Mostly people suffer from nuevo-addiction and waiting is just too much. Also, alot of people who have phones I have noticed once the phone becomes bugfree with lots of support they bail for a new phone to conquer the new phone system.
I am waiting for the S2
if you've got the money why nit? if I'm a millionaire I would buy all the latest android phone.

I'm looking forward to the sensation. The galaxy s2 wont be significantly better in terms of hardware, and I've got a real bad taste in my mouth from the lack of support my vibrant has received from Samsung. Locked bootloader or not, the sensation is still a pretty good looking phone that I'm sure will perform well.
Worst case scenario, I buy the sensation, hate it and return within 14 days, wait for something else to be released. My vibrant and hd2 should keep me happy until I find something great.

To me the problem is buying a carrier altered edition of the phone. The international GS seems to get upgrades just fine. They don't have to wait on Samsung AND then the retarded carriers with all their alterations and other BS. That's what owning my Vibrant has taught me. 100% international & unlocked only from here on in. I'll be buying the International SGS2 as soon as I can, no US version for me ever again.
all i want is a new google nexus phone with a notification led duel cameras with flash and a duel core processor then ill be happy

New to Atrix

Hello!
I just got the Atrix on Saturday. I've upgraded from the iPhone 3GS and I couldn't be happier. The Atrix just feels more free overall.
This is my first open-source phone and I hope I can only say good things about it by the time my contract is up and its time to upgrade.
Speed is excellent, it feels so snappy and quick.
I rooted my Atrix a few hours after purchasing it, installed Titanium Backup Pro and froze some of the stock apps.
When I first got the phone, I was actually disappointed by the dl/ul speeds I was receiving, but that didn't deter me. Today, their was a SBF Mod which unlocks HSPA's radio and now it FLIES.
I love my new phone.
Just thought I'd share my experiences with everyone!
Its great that you are enjoying the phone. Its always nice to hear good things about the Atrix, it was pretty negative around here for a while. Especially nice to hear from an iPhone convert .

Thanks,
I was going to wait out and be an Apple fanboy for the iPhone 5 but I couldn't stand the 3GS and its slowness anymore.
Remembered that my contract was up in a few days, I stopped by the AT&T Store and started playing with it. I was hooked.
Don't forget to install gingerblur or greyblur. I switched from the 3Gs too. The only thing I can say I genuinely miss is having a polished version of monopoly.
I have a 3GS, I just can't figure out if I should wait and see what competes with the iPhone 5 or just get the Atrix now. I'm also thinking about waiting for the Galaxy S ii but who knows when that'll come.
Too many choices!
Iphone is just plain slow. And I come to figure out simple people that can't learn how to use a monster device made on android shun it cause their to stupid to learn it so they revert back to thiet "apple" is better mindframe.

Haha, i must say i miss the 3GS but only for the look of it. I had one of them back in the day, had some rubber case on it and it would always make me smile when i took that case off and saw how shiney the back was. I know it's a stupid thing to like a phone for, but i like the shineyness!!
Good move going to the atrix, while it seems like it's a hibernating bear when it wakes up with gingerbread it's going to be boss level.

I'm a noob to android (obviously) and I keep hearing about the locked bootloader, but what is it exactly?
I think anyone who has gone from an iPhone to an Android has realized how much more useful a smartphone can be when you have more control over what you can change.
I went from a iphone 1 to the Atrix. Needless to say, I am blown away. It's so fast and smooth. I installed gingerblur and it feels even better now. I love being able to do things to my phone like I did with my PSP and computer. Never going back to apple.

A bootloader is a code that is read before an OS starts to run. All Operating systems such asPC, laptop, smartphones, etc. have bootloaders. Bootloaders package the instructions to boot OS kernel
a locked bootloader means it is impossible (at the moment until unlocked) to flash a Custom ROM so we are stuck with pseudo-roms. Meaning we cannot fully customize our phones.
Unlocking the bootloader allows you to install custom Firmware on your Android phone

I just put gingerbread on my cappy and I'm so impressed by the speed. I know I'm comparing froyo to gingerbread but for a dual core Id expect a bit betterr performance. The cappy handles live wallpapers much better than the atrix.
What's keeping me here is the fact that moto seems to actually care, the phone has gotten two updates already, and while second one has lower my phone down, I imagine that will be fixed.

This, I believe, refers to what the OP may be describing.
Smartphones are newer and better all the time. People on here buy every new phone! The Atrix new luster and excitement has worn off, and people are ready to move on to the next big thing(seems to be Galaxy S 2).
Thats the nature of the tech industry, and more specifically the smartphone industry.
I don't think I'd mind waiting 6 months, but also part of me says that 6 months is a long time to get the phone to a smooth point.
It will fly if we get the 2.4 gingerbread optimized for dual cores.
Hey,
I had my Evo for about a year before having to make the decision to switch to AT&T. Here in the USVI, AT&T is just plain out faster, calls are clearer, there are less issues with the service and so on and so forth. I would have kept my Evo until the Evo 3D came out or something.
The Atrix is a beast of a phone and the service is great! I'm satisfied with what I have and from this point on, it can only get better.
Have faith, man.
I never got all those comments about how unresponsive the Atrix is.. mine is super responsive. Granted I come from a Touch HD (WinMo) phone which was friggin' slow as molasses by today's standards so yeah.. but hey the iPhone 4 is supposed to be a snappyness reference yet I constantly see my friends iPhones lag doing some basic thing at some point, and I find my Atrix to be way up there, so i'm not sure about all the complaining.. I don't get it.

The thing that sucks about this phone is mostly just the locked bootloader... sure gingerbread may come, and we finally got the hspa+, but what I really want is to be able to flash custom roms. Until then we're basically crippled and are stuck with clunky and featureless motoblur which barely taps into this things potential.

Lol.. No matter how amazing a device is, there will always be those who criticize it.
The hardware specs and technological innovations implemented on this phone are unlike any phone ever produced. For you to imply that this is not "actually a good phone" makes you appear very ignorant. I don't mean that in a disrespectful way.
I think the main issue here is usability for the average non-tech savvy user.. When they don't understand why the phone isn't doing what they want it to do, they assume it can't or it just sucks.. There are some users such as myself who understand the progression of new hardware & the intricacies involved with getting software to interface correctly with it. We expect to run into issues & focus on solutions rather than complaining.
If you want an environment where everything just works without much input needed from you, consider steve jobs walled garden aka iOS
Otherwise, dig in, try to understand how android & the phone works.. It's only gonna get better.

Most roms are just gingerbread with features that don't work. Flashing roms is fun until you needs to actually use your phone. Custom roms and kernals have so many bugs.

Bell users have it worse.

No one expects to run into issues with a 600 dollar piece of technology. They should, and rightfully so, expect it to work. THe G2x seems to have almost identical specs, and that phone performs much better under all situations. Android isn't about forcing the user to do unnecessary steps to make his phone work on par with any other on the market, its about giving you the opportunity to allow you to do more than whats on the the market. I can say right now, for the past 3 android phones i've boughten, i've never had to do anything special to make them work. Power on. Power off. Done. What makes the atrix different?
I know that sounds like a hateful post, but it's not. I just don't think it's fair for people to say a 600 dollar piece of electronic isn't gonna work right out of the box. I do still love my atrix, the form is great and the fingerprint scanner is very nice. But my concerns are legitimate and aren't solvable by steve jobs.
I'm fed up. Totally disappointed by the phone. The webtop mode remindes me of the carphone idea. Seemed good at the time buy useless shortly after. Hopefuly the galaxy S 2 will be announced tomorrow for att. If not on ordering from UK. This is the best android phone out right now for AT&T. Almost makes me wish I didn't jump ship for the iPhone 4 in June from T-Mobile (g2x & nexus s)

I think AT&T is announcing the samsung infuse tomorrow, not the SGSII, but who knows. I agree, webtop was cool for that first time you show your friends, but i've never used it since. While i have a HUGE grudge against samsung from the captivate debacle, i might try the SGSII but that probably won't hit until july like the cappy.
I switched to an inspire, I love the phone and everything about it, no lag with the latest cm. I'm switching back to the atrix for the ffc and battery life, battery life is abysmal on the inspire.

HTC Rezound thoughts?

So I see that the HTC Rezound dropped down to $50 today, and I've been looking for a cheap 4g phone that isn't the stratosphere. This "looks" like a good deal, except I know absolutely nothing about HTC phones.
The beats audio thing looks pointless to me, but does anyone have any thoughts on the rest of the phone? I am entirely clueless about this so any insight is appreciated.
Thanks

the rezound is a good phone. with an unlocked bootloader, 4g, hd screen and htc, its a good upgrade. plus you could even sell the earbuds and make all your money back id say go for it if you dont mind a phone on the thicker side lol
it's a nice phone, especially at that price. good specs, nice HD screen (though not amoled so not quite as vibrant) and fast data. I'd recommend it, especially with the ics upgrade coming in a few days.

Coming from someone who really doesn't enjoy touchwiz at all, is sense enjoyable to use? It doesn't look like the Rezound has any ICS source which worries me, but maybe I'm more worried than I should be because Samsung destroyed my confidence in custom skins?
I might just have to get my AOSP fix from my Gtab, but I'm also just realizing how awesome the Fascinate is.
Thanks again!

being that i came from an htc eris, i can say sense is nice but laggy...and samsungs are still about the easiest to mod. unfortnately ICS source would have to be out before i would make the switch...gingerbread blowz!
Hardware wise, it's a pretty good phone for $50. I personally wouldn't be interested in it since (sorry to be harsh) but AOSP development looks... less than promising. Wouldn't be terribly interested in sense. There will be official ICS soon, but it's with sense 3.6, not version 4, which looks like the only decent iteration of sense in ages.

It looks like all they need is s-off (which from what I can see is very close to being completed) to gain access to the nand partition, and ICS kernel source.
So I guess I need to find out if HTC is good about releasing kernel source, if they are I might just pick this up.
4G tethering to my tablet is just so tempting...om nom nom!
if you like sense (or think you might), its probably worth getting
i wouldnt your breath for aosp though as they dont have any experienced aosp guys who own the phone or are working on it
really though being tied to that phone for 2 years might be kinda rough imo...id soldier on and wait for any news on either a better htc (hopefully a one series) or the sgs3 and try and pick up a charge on the cheap on craiglist ebay (cant be more than 125 these days) if you need lte

It's tempting! Especially since my most non-techy friend just bought a gnexus and waved it in my face all day, lol.

Get it then! It's arguably the best phone on Verizon. Dual core. Hd screen. Unlockable bootloader. One of the best cameras. You really can't go wrong. You can wait it out for a better phone (gs3 or HTC one series), but don't get your hopes up. Good luck and choose well because you only have 24 hours. Plus try to use amazon wireless. Free shipping no tax some extra free apps and I got a free car charger!

Honestly I've been using aosp on my phone ever since I got my inc2. sense is too ugly and boring for me but it's just my opinion. Also, they aren't much faster at updating phones than Samsung. I would wait for Galaxy Note variant if there's one ever or sgs3.

Ya you pretty much nailed the two reason I haven't bought it yet.
1.) No AOSP, and they're getting ICS delayed over and over.
2.) Tegra 3...om nom nom...it's worth the wait.

They are working on RIL for CM9. Once that gets worked out (and they do have experienced AOSP guys working it), and ICS kernel source drops it'll be done. From what I understand, there are quite a few devs that are ready to start working on the Rezound when the s-off method is released.
For everyone bagging on sense, it really is a matter of opinion and taste. I'm running a Sense 4.0 Rom that was just released today and it is really nice. Still needs some work and polish, but it is running very well. It's funny, a lot of people complain about Sense being ugly, but it is amazing how many people want to run an AOSP Rom but also have a lot of the Sense widgets like the flip/weather clock and animations, and Friend Stream (which I personally can't stand), and the app drawer. Personally, I like both and think they both have their strengths and weaknesses.
What AOSP devs do they have and what's the status of S-OFF?

dmeadows3,synisterwolf, and droidvicious (MIUI) are two that I know of. Plus two awesome devs that usually work on Sense Rom's (Joelz and newtoroot) I believe said that they are going to contribute to the RIL issues too.
As for S-Off, last week globatron and his team did a very short closed beta on a method for S-off and successfully attained s-off on several peoples rezounds. We are just waiting for them to get it ready for prime-time and then we're golden.
I can't wait for CM9 and Miui v4 on this phone to be honest.
Nice, hopefully things speed up from this point and they can get some good AOSP development. Without solid AOSP rom support, it'll be hard for me to upgrade.
I suppose I just thought it was funny how a bunch of rezound people were talking about how much greater the rezound is than the nexus, "wait until we have CM9, this thing will spank the nexus!". This was like 5 months ago when the phones were coming out (and still no AOSP), but I still see comments like that. I don't really care since I don't have either device, just thought it was mildly amusing. Not saying AOSP roms won't happen, but most of the people you mentioned port sense roms, which as I understand, is a different animal then building from source.
Hopefully they can get the RIL figured out.
