t-mobile edge faster? - Streak 5 General

I am running my streak on T-mobile, and only getting edge speeds. The last couple of days it seems like it has been running wayyy faster on edge. I mean like 3 times faster.I do alot of surfing on breaks. So I did a speed test, only tried one, but was getting about 410 kbps. Anyone notice the same deal? I'm not complaing. My buddy was only getting around 550 on his 3gs with AT&T 3g. From what I've checked, edge is usually about a third of what I'm getting.

It depends on your location. I live in washington and after unlocking my steak and using with tmobile, edge is faster than att 3g. Also at my work I never got any data connection with att 3g but tmobile edge works very good. Basically I'm paying less for better service and I'm loving tmobile.

Att edge faster than Tmobile 3g possible?

I just unlocked and my browsers (Internet Explorer, Opera Mini, Opera Mobile 10-final)they all FEEL faster on ATT edge than Tmobile 3g. I get full signal on both but att just loads up pages quicker.... I dont know maybe its just mental.

Theoretically, 3G is about twice as fast as EDGE, but it's all about your location.
At home, my 3g speed is slower than what edge normally gets.
No Doubt, dslreports and mobilespeedtest on ATT Edge Only came up at 800kbps average from my wifes first gen iphone.
Tmobile same tests max out at 780kbps.
ATT 3G rockets up to 1500kbps average on my Unlocked Kaiser! (Kaiser/Tilt)
Tmobile 3G maxed out again at around 780kbps, 3G/H didn't matter.
GSM Only mode E, I got around 300kbps...on Tmobile.

Either you made a mistake or it's lying to you because the max speed of Edge is 236.8 kbit/s regardless of the carrier. In actuality, you're likely to get something closer to 190-220kbs

data issue

Do you guys have any issues with slow data connectivity? my data had been really slow for over two months.. like edge speeds. it never was like that before. I'm in a good 3g area and never had the issue till about two months ago. I've tried resetting the phone multiple times. tried numerous roms and diferrent radios. have the latest radio right now. got a new sim. got the network refreshed on my phone. still the same.anyone else dealing with this?
i have also, tmo is no help.
T mobile has data throttling and if you have gone over their magic number (not sure the exact number) they will lower your data to edge speeds
Sent from my HD2 using XDA App
The magic number is 5GB, IE if you go over 5GB of data usage a month, you get throttled down to EDGE speeds.
i forgot to mention i haven't went over my cap. i never do especially now since downloading anything takes forever. your right tmobile is no help. I've called 4 times all they do is give me the run around or there techs are idiots. i miss my old speeds. I'm not sure what I'm gonna do. do i got to buy a brand new phone. i dunno..
I haven't even used 2 gb, tech support gave me the voice stream wap but it didn't help. my tp2 is faster right now.
i'm thinking it's the new rom...
Its NOT edge speeds they throttle you at. Its around 64kbps. Just faster than dial up. If they throttled me at edge speeds, i would be a lot happier. I know, i am throttled right now. (Well, they think i am. I got around it easily)

If you don't mind me asking. How were you able to get around it? Tmo has thtottled me several times in the past
Change your apn to internet2.voicestream.com. It worked for me.

My Samsung Galaxy S2 3G Speeds Are Very Slow

I got really happy today when I discovered XDA developers through Google. There seems to be a wealth of information on this forum.
I recently purchased the Samsung Galaxy S2 in India and I have to say, the quality exceeded my expectations, seriously.
I also signed up for Airtel's 3G service, and the service was working fine for the first 2-3 days with speeds exceeding ~3mbps (>3000kbps).
However, here is where my problem started:
Just a couple of days back I was simultaneously downloading a bunch of free Apps from the Marketplace and somewhere in the middle my 3G speeds dropped. I seriously don't know what happened. I have the flexible package from Airtel which gives 1.25 gigabytes, and according to my phone, I've used only 550 megabytes at that time.
Now, my speeds are locked at 40kbps (according to Speedtest and web browsing experience) and I don't if it is my phone having the issue or if it is my SIM or Airtel Prepaid account (I am 99.9% percent I have not exceeded the balance or else talktime would have already been deducted by now), or a technical glitch on Airtel's server-end.
I have tried disabling / enabling fast dormancy, disabling / enabling HSPDA, configuring WCDMA Only, and manually configuring the Airtel settings. Yet, none of that worked.
I am feeling very frustrated and would appreciate any help in addressing this matter. Thanks in advance.
There are a couple of Indian specific threads that you'd be better off getting help in. This is the biggest one...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=995752
I would like to read feedback from folks around the world as well.
I've already gone through the mentioned Indian thread and I have to say, it requires a moderator.
Help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
same problem on t-mobile
i bought the sgs2 2 months ago , i live in the us now and i bought it unloked from amazon. i put my simcard from tmobile in it , previously was using a nexus one. i have unlimited data plan but only get edge speeds on it which is very frustrating. on the nexus i was getting 3g speeds. one time while i was driving (i live in florida) i managed to get a 3g signal but the speeds were still in the edge range. most of the time i`m using wifi, but since i`m paying for the data plan, id like for my phone to be able to use it.
if anybody would be able to enlighten me about how to go about my problem i would appreciated it.

You won't get 3g speeds on tmobile because sgs2 doesn't have the necessary tmobile 3g bands. If you want 3g and hspa+ speeds thru sgs2, switch to att.

Unfortunately for us (My SGS2 will arrive later today) T-mobile uses different 3G/4G bands than most other carriers worldwide.... so we are stuck with EDGE (2G)
On a side note how are the speeds when browsing on EDGE? Is it painfully slow? If so try downloading Opera mini it should help quite a bit since it renders everything server side
thanks
thanks for the prompt answers , after a little research i`ve found out exactelly the same thing, that i have to switch to at&t to get better speeds and i probably will.
yes , surfing on 2g is horribly slow and my 70$ unlimited plan is useless
just did a speedtest 133kbps/down 94k up , ridiculous :'(
Any suggestions or advices for the 3G problems
HI, I am also facing the same problem of 3G of low speeds any updates regarding this?
Any chance your provider might be throttling your speeds based on usage behaviour?
Took mine to service center, having the same simptoms as described by you, the resolution was: faulty motherboard -> replace. Not a firmware issue...a hardware one.

[Q] HD2 and EDGE (on T-Mobile), a survey

Hello everyone,
I have been on CDMA carriers all my life and have just made a test switch to T-Mobile (to try out their $30 5GB plan), and I've got a HD2 up and running.
My problem is that the 3G works fine when I'm in a corresponding coverage area, but the EDGE connection NEVER works. In a really strong 3G/HSPA area, I can pull up to 600 KB/sec, which is great. On EDGE, I can never pull more than 1 KB/sec, if anything. More than half the time, when I try and run a speed test on EDGE, it just times out and quits. I was under the impression that EDGE was capable of at least 20-30 KB/sec (if not a little higher). I can make calls just fine, but the data is almost non-existent on EDGE.
Is my HD2 performing normally in EDGE? Does this happen to anybody else? I have full bars of EDGE, and still the poor performance. Could a few T-Mobile users post some EDGE speed examples? I just want to confirm whether or not T-Mobile's EDGE is really this horrible or if my HD2 is a special case.
I'm using the newest hyperdroid (NAND) and running the newest 2.15 radio. I've tried all combinations of T-Mobile APN settings I could find and they don't seem to fix anything. Multiple settings have worked for 3G, but none have worked for EDGE.
Thanks in advance, folks.
I'm also using hyperdroid 5.10. I'm not crazy familiar with how the apn settings work, so I ran 2 tests in case this matters.
Using 'simple' apn setting: ping 416ms, download 169kbps, upload 90kbps
Using 'tmobile' apn setting: ping 415ms, download 195kbps, upload 99kbps

Thanks phoenix,
I did some traveling and tested EDGE in a different city, and it seems to work. I'm getting between 10-20 KB/s, which is acceptable. So the culprit is my hometown, which is a small, densely populated college town that's only covered by 3G where the stadium is located. The rest of it is EDGE, but there's full bars of it.
So here's another question. Do you think my lack of access is due to being on prepaid? I did notice that there are a few differences between postpaid and prepaid in terms of roaming abilities. The problem is that my town isn't considered a roaming area. There are a few areas outside of town that will be in gray areas.
I'll stop by a store later on amd see what I can do and report back. Surely someone else is experiencing something similar...

When you say prepaid, you mean the no contract monthly plan? My wife and I are still on the 'Even More Plus' family plan that's no longer available, so we pay monthly with no contract without any data issues. I can't imagine why which plan would make a difference, but I've never tried it out. Also, since I live in a Houston suburb we have extensive coverage of 2g, 3g, and 4g, so it's a bit different than your situation.
You might try asking some local friends with T-Mobile to test their edge speeds, maybe it could help narrow down the issue to the network or your device/plan.
Best of luck to you.

Three network vs T-mobile (Pay monthly)

Hi guys, I have a pay monthly sim which is from T-mobile and it will end in 4 Months and i am waiting for Samsung s4 release. Basically which network provider is better? I want to swap to Three because they have cheap and good plan for the S4.. What is your experience with this network provider? Do they have fast internet? are they better than T-mobile?
Regards.
LTE has been deployed in a few cities already and the DC-HSPA speeds are pretty good. Not sure about Three though as I've never really heard of them. LTE speeds seem to be consistently 20Mbps down and around 30-50msec pings from the screenshots I've seen for KC and Vegas. And getting the $30 5GB plan is really good.
I assume you're talking about the UK? Three aren't rolling out 4g until q4 of this year, tmobile will never roll out 4g, you need to go to EE for that. Three's dchspa is great from my experience-

I have a Nexus 4 on Three currently, using their £12.90 plan with AYCE data, speeds seem to fluctuate alot for me, between 0.5Mbps and 12Mbps in the same room of my house, depending on the day. Ping times are lower than 100ms 80% of the time, so fast page loading. My Mum is on T-Mobile (using an iPhone 4 so no DC-HSDPA, not sure if T-Mobile support it anyway) and her speeds are never higher than 2Mbps down with 200ms ping, haven't tried her sim in my phone so can't comment on if it's phone related or network, but what I suggest is get a Three payg sim, top it up with a bit of credit and check the speeds in your area, also check their coverage map as they don't have a 2G backup everywhere (only rural places with little to no 3G)
