That is true, it's not necessary, but I've found in some cases it helps. The link to download the pit was in the description of the video. I'll check the link when I get a chance, but that won't be untill about 3:30 EST

i havnt used a pit file ever for clockwork, but what i have had to do is swap kernels on first recovery boot otherwise clockwork breaks after first boot and you have reflash cwm the next time.... i have also found that you can use the fascinates su+busybox.zip to root through clockwork if someone doesnt feel like flashing debloated

I looked threw the post for the pit file didn't see anything I will try the fantastic method

I have also noticed that cwm disappears after reboot, but I am deathly afraid of swapping kernels without knowing more about it. Do you have any good links as far as kernels for the continuum (like the one you used) so i can get cwm on there permanently without glitching my phone?

Do a search on the forums for d17 kernel it is by adrylin that is the one I am useing now works great

It may very well be posted in another thread (stock kernel as Odin3, that is) but it seems like quite a few people that use Odin3 can no longer receive OTA updates. Many of us are getting failures at 50% after using Odin3.

With the number of people getting bricked phones with the OTA why would anyone be crazy enough to do it? We've already had JH7 for weeks over here. When you Odin one click have you removed ClockworkMod or Voodoo folders from your root before attempting OTA? Odin won't touch anything that is on your internal sd. You should move those files to a safe place on either your external sd or your computer. I don't think anyone with fails has tried removing the items from their root before OTA. I did see a post somewhere that someone did and the OTA worked.
That's not true at all. Quite a few people flash Odin and IMMEDIATELY try the update, no modifacations from stock, only to have it fail. Myself included.

Well the OTA update JH7 is much different than the one leaked on samsungfirmwares. Prolly half the files have different md5 checksums, so there's a lot different.

Thats what I did. I did odin3 one click, then immediately downloaded the OTA update and it crashed at 50%.
Hopefully somebody will be able to get the OTA update and then make it into an update.zip that we can just flash via recovery. The OTA JH7 is much different from the leaked JH7 on samsungfirmwares.

Same here. Pretty disappointing. . . .

Help speeding up my SGS.

Heya, guys.
I'm Angelo. Nice to meet you all.
First of all, I want to say Congratulations to all the people who built this website up.
THere's my issue now:
I got a Samsung Galaxy S on the 22nd of December, so it's kinda new, already updated to Froyo 2.2 firmware version (factory) I9000XXJPP build RSJP5
Rooted with Z4Root and Lagfixed with Ryanza's OneClickLagFix v2.2, I also modified the schedule (I've set deadline with tweaks instead of the default cpq).
I'm not good at all with all those roms and kernels stuff, Odin... Doesn't sound "safe" for me, don't want to toss it after three weeks.
I tried to speed up my phone, it went from 952 to 1857, but I don't see any changes, only at the start when I boot the phone, it loads faster.
Could you guys help me with this stuff out? I'd like to avoid to flash my phone, just to point this out.
Thanks in advance, Angelo.

If you are rooted then you might as well download a ROM that can be flashed using Recovery Mode.
Download [ROM] [11.01.2011] Darky's v8.0 Gingerbread Edition ★ JPY ★

Make sure your download mode is working... ( search for 3 button fix )
Install CWM (search for this)
Flash ROM by copying the ROM to you internal sd and reboot to recovery...
Done

I recommend flashing any custom JPY rom, 2.2.1 is night and day compared to 2.2, very fast, also recommend using Hardcores Speedmod kernel as well, make sure to disable your lagfix,(oclf does not work in hardcores) and use the ext4 lagfix from Hardcores kernel...
All you really have to do is flash your rom of choice in recovery, then flash your kernel, in recovery as well, and then apply your lagfix.. check your rom of choices thread, most come with instructions on installing

If you check the threads for the ROMs you'll see very detailed install guides that the chefs have put together. You will probably need to use Odin for some steps so get the right drivers and read up on that (it's all here in the stickies or in General).
That's why it's always good to do lots of reading before posting
The best ROM available at the moment IMO, in terms of speed, customizability, and the best support community, it's Doc's Kichen.
Put together your ROM at www.romkitchen.org.
Check his thread for the instructions and if you need help. You won't be disappointed

Since you are running Froyo currently, you must first copy your desired ROM to your SD card, and then flash a kernel that has ClockWork build in (such as Voodoo or Hardcore). Then you can simply reboot into recovery (volume up + home + power) and install the ROM from the SD card. That's about all there is to it If you have problems you can use the "clean install method" of flashing back to Eclair with pit but this is rarely necessary.
Using Doc's ROM is really the way to go, you get great choices of launchers, kernels, themes, modems, so you can make it just how you want it without having to waste time changing/installing things afterwards.

Either way, the procedure is basically the same. We could go back and forth all day
With Doc's online kitchen you can have Voodoo 5.1 with his awesome sound work ready to go right out of the box (hmm that idiom doesn't really work with ROMs does it )

Sorry bud, but there is no way to flash a kernel without Odin unless you have clockwork already. Which you don't if you're on an official Froyo release that has 3e recovery (clockwork can't be used unless you change kernels with Odin).
Flashing with Odin is easy, go into download (volume down + home + power), plug into PC, open up Odin, press PDA, and browse to the .tar of your kernel (such as Voodoo or Hardcore) that you downloaded. Press start and watch the magic happen. This is covered in great detail in many threads, plz look around

ROM Manager is not recommended for most SGS ROMs. In addition, it is likely to cause problems with Froyo ROMs with 3e recovery that don't like unsigned zips.

Go to this page to download the TRUE stock rom. I think it is in ODIN's format but it should work easity just as clockwork. I don't know if it's the same version as the one you have but give ODIN a chance, it was very simple for me and I'm practically a noob.

What's the zip file? Odin files usually contain a pit and a tar file. clockwork's zip have a bunch of folders and files, I think.
Yea you cannot use CWM to flash an Odin package. Use Odin to get back to 2.1.

KA6 is official now - so no need to go all the way back to 2.1 to return phone. But you'll still need to use Odin to get the completely stock version on.

So, could you flash back to stock with the current 2.2 update from Samsung? Or would flashing back to 2.1 be better?
vibrantdump.zip isn't an actual rom - it's just an archive containing the vibrant file tree. It doesn't have any scripts to install or anything.
Edit: If you're sending it back to Samsung for warranty work, you could always use a stock (not deodex/root/etc) JI6 clockwork mod image. KA6 is official, but not required.
I don't believe its possible to use CWM to flash back to 2.1 from 2.2 in any case because it doesn't backup the kernel. ODIN is the best (perhaps only?) way, but again not necessary since KA6 2.2 is now official.

Well I kinda told em that it had 2.1 update 1 lol, my reason for sending back was the gps and according to tmo cust serv the 2.2 release has a fix, I dont pay for a warranty, I guess its just a defective exchange. It also gets super hot above the battery when im really pushing it, that may be why they issued the return because I told them about that too. so if I cant flash the vibrantdump.zip, what would be a rom that simulates 2.1 the best? I cant get to a pc so I cant odin until wednesday and need to get it resembling stock before then. I know I cant lose clockwork recovery but just wanted it to say the right stuff in phone info and have the right startup shutdowns you know? Am I just worrying too much?

Jaden, Odin back to stock (look in the Noob guide by S14274N) it has everything you need, Once you are in stock , then root the phone (use superoneclick, it is easy), then download Rom manager, then you will go back into download hit update packages and it will be rooted, From there you can flash any rom you want. Your phone is ok, you need just to go into Download and Odin back to stock first.
You probably can just restart your phone, don't think any changes were even made...long press the power button until it restarts.
Hahaha no offense and not trying to troll but guys please ODIN before any flash of rom, kernel, mod, theme, anything. That way you dont flip out when **** goes wrong. I did,so do many other flashers, and so should you pr anybody else. Also, do a backup with recovery before flashing....

I really hate to be that guy, but please use periods or any other form of punctuation. I came into the thread wanting to offer advise and about a line into the post I realized it was all one big sentence. I gave up.

Odin to stock before every new ROM flash is overkill...

Yeah its not really necessary, I think the last time I used ODIN was before flashing the Nero beta. It will keep things fresh and mostly issue free, but if you know what you're doing you really shouldn't have to do it for every flash.
