[Q] Social Networking - Milestone 2 General

How often does the Social Networking app update? I can't find any options to change refresh time. Also there's no manual refresh option...

That didn't answer my question. I did some self testing and came up with about 2 minutes as the time refresh rate. The app is actually quite useful as you can get all your messages in the Universal Inbox.

It is useful if u pay for unlimited 3G connection, not my case. So i prefer to download each social network app I use and manually refresh what I want.

Serious? You might not like it, but there are actually people who like Blur. You like it or not, just accept and respect that please.
About the refreshing: I've been looking for it too, but that option isn't anywhere to be found. I've also found the interval for syncing social networking isn't 2 minutes for me... Longer I guess.
Manual syncing is possible, but you have to disable syncing completely for a few seconds and re-enable it. Syncing will start after this.

Not sure if it's of use, but there is the option to only update the Social Networking apps over wifi which can be found in the Data Manager section of Settings.
Cheers,
Steve

I;m not worried about sync or data cos my plan has about 250MB a month...I am planning to upgrade to 1GB a month...
just annoyed about refresh issue that's all.

250MB... that's quite small ammount. With my plan I have 2GB a month, and I'm using about 700MB out of this

Yeah. I dont download music or videos on my phone. I use my PC for that.
Sent from my MotoA953 using XDA Premium App

the reason yours is updating so often is perhaps cuz u have quite a number of friends on ur social networks. what u can do is u can filter which updates you'd like to see from which friends. that could significantly reduce how often your blur updates itself.
another option would be to do what steve suggested....theres an option in settings where it syncs ur social networking over wifi only. that should work
the best option however is to get urself an unlimited data package. 500MB-1GB data allowance would be sufficient, but if ur heavy on skype and other data intensive apps or sights a 2GB package would be recommended.

How do I check data usage?

This may sound like a stupid question, but when I first got the G2 I was about to check my data usage, but now I forgot how. I've gone to my.t-mobile.com and I've check the My Account app. My memory has lapsed!
Checkin' the ole data stream...
Once upon a time it was #DATA#, but I don't think that is the case anymore...
You can see you're data usage on T-Mobile.com. Log into your account, click on Account Use, click on the phone line in question, then scroll down and you will see the Data section.
There are a few apps on the market that monitor usage. But I imagine they also drain the battery.

Those apps only moniter when there on. So if u dont run the app all the time it wont give you the right data. But yea log into t mobile and ur see it there

Now for another question, why is my.t-mobile.com so SLOW?
3G Watchdog is a really nice app to handle data consumption and is very lightweight on both the system and the battery. Look it up on the marketplace.

I think this means you are allowed to carry your mobile into social events and not get charged for it!
but seriously, its probably you can access twitter, facebook, myspace etc for no charge?
i know that, but is it for the official app, friend stream ?

I can only assume that they look for facebook etc in the addresses that are being visited by the widgets or normal browser.
Took me 2 minutes to find the info on their website

See now this is what I love seeing. A junior member that finds information in a jiffy!
I can confirm that unlimited social network with all Canadian carriers (Don't know about the other ones) includes any widgets connecting to social networks. Considering Friend stream uses the facebook authentification process and streams its information from facebook itself, you can surf all you want on it unlimited (Pictures, videos, etc.) but the minute you click on a facebook link, an external link, it goes through a regular data plan.
The unlimited social networking is a scam to me, really...
Yeah i mean really, I called bell twice and they couldn't even tell me. Thanks so much guys.

New Notification

I've been running CM7 since the last "Alpha" release and have it updated with the Oct 22 update. I don't recall exactly when, but I started recieving these "optout" notifications. I don't know if it's related to CM7 or something else, but they're not cool at all . Does anyone know where they're coming from or how to stop them?

The only app I have installed now that was not before I switched to CM7 is Go SMS Pro. Has anyone had any experience with it?
Go sms pro doesn't do that, but i don't use go fb chat. What opens when you click it?
Edit :

Found this after a bit of research. Looks like an adbased app on your phone is using their apk. Seems they do support opt out, but aren't doing a good job a securing your identity period.

I'm not going to click those %^#$%#$%#$ Spam messages... I clear all the notifications. The only features of Go SMS Pro I use are SMS & MMS. I don't have Facebook, Myspace, Google+ or any other "Social networking" (Read: Stalking) crap. Want nothing to do with any of them. Any ideas how I can track down where it came from? I've looked at the installed apps and services with Titanium Backup and nothing stands out. Unless One of the other apps got 'updated' to include this new 'feature', Go SMS seems the most likely suspect at the moment.

wats a myspace?
Although I usually have 150-200+ apps installed at any one time, I started getting those annoying little "notifications" almost as soon as I installed the free version of the IPhone keyboard. Not cool at all...
How often do they come up? Is it at a predetermined time or is it random? A relatively easy way to narrow it down may be to look at market reviews of suspected apps.
Girlfriend had this problem. There's an app called airpush detector on the market. Download it to see what's causing the ads

i use "3g watchdog" it is very stable and accurate.
I'm also using "3G Watchdog". has always been very accurate for me. also the widget and optional statusbar-icon come in handy.

Per app
Installed Onavo today (featured on the market) which shows the apps that are using your data as well.
Looks nice, but I'm only using it for a day now.
Therer are several good monitoring-apps, except for the ones already named you could try NetCounter and PhoneUsage. With the last one you can monitor you calls, text and data traffic.

Onavo drains battery and is annoying.
SOme roms, like MIUI have a nice 3g monitor built in the OS. And a firewall. SO this will help keep the balance

i'm not tethering that much, but i think they fixt that with one of the last updates. not sure though.
I've been using 3G Watchdog for a while and I'm very happy with it. Alerts you when you're close to busting your cap and it can even toggle off data before you go over your limit. You can have a data usage indicator in the notification bar and as a widget, if you want, too.
note that some carriers exclude certain downloaded content, and some charge per MB rounded session etc which doesnt get taken into account with most apps
often the carrier itself has an app which tells you your account usage and can send warning message when about to reach limit. Not sure if rogers has this but worth checking out
Traffic Monitor is very accurate, gives more data (tethering, current period, current day ...), is free
but is less colorful...

Anyway to get around T Mobile's tethering monitoring

I am running Juggernaut ROM and used it to tether quite heavily this past few days. I received a text message from T Mobile telling me to sign up for their tethering plan. I think they were monitoring the amount of data usage I was using and I exceeded some limit over a certain time frame. Is there anyway around this? Previously I only tethered for a few hours at most. Thanks.
No way around it

Google how to change the user agent on your internet browser. The T-mobile upsell page only shows up when it detects you're using a desktop browser via the user agent. Try tethering to a tablet or Google Chrome with the user agent set to Firefox and it works fine even after they send you the message saying your tethering is blocked.

They can prove it actually they can see the mac address of every device on their network and they know if a device using their network isn't a phone or isn't one of their phones

The quick workaround for the tether monitor upsell is to use a VPN... You can use a free service (I use VPN Reactor) or a paid service (such as StrongVPN).
To find and setup VPN Reactor, use HTTPS://www.google.com to perform a search... VPN Reactor is a secure (HTTPS) site and the upsell notice will not appear (which you might have noticed when checking any other secure site, such as GMail).
I hope this helps those looking for a solution to the tether upsell notice.
Idk if this is possible but using cm9 and aokp I have had no problems with tethering, and from what I have been reading perhaps aosp derivative roms don't have this issue?

No problems here using the native tethering app.......haven't had any messages or run ins with the upsell page. BTW I'm using FIREFOX on my laptop with some add-ons.
I opened titanium backup and froze "tethering manager" and now I can tether for free.

They still know you're doing it.
I got this same text message from TMobile, even though they recommended getting a tethering plan I didn't and they said I wouldn't be able to tether anymore.
To this day I'm still tethering, so I don't believe they can do anything to stop the tethering if you are on a custom ROM.

I dunno what they can do about it. Maybe charge you? Maybe shut down your data completely? Who knows
Wow I had just rooted my cousins phone and came across this issue as he got two text messages briefly after tethering.
download Logging Test App and the pro key off the market, gets rid of CIQ in juggs and not to mention makes the phone run like its ass is on fire... just be sure to run threw everything, and try not to brick yourself.... and if you don't backup and loose your os.. i just might die laughing
after running this i no longer got thoes nasty " we know your tethering " texts

No, you cant. Freezing that does not somehow hide your tethering data usage
BTW TMo will be stopping free tethering with ICS: http://support.t-mobile.com/thread/25504?start=0&tstart=0

yeah, you've got to get rid of tethering manager completely.... in other words find a rom that doesn't need it!
TMo can stop you from tethering if they want to, It's just a balance of the expected revenue gain and the likely backlash. If a nasty message accomplishes one without the other, it's a no brainer.
If you are rooted on a custom rom from the development section most likely you shouldn't receive any messages. That doesn't mean they aren't tracking your data. You will be throttled to 60kbs when you've reached the limit. For most people that's 2 or 5 gigs of data. There used to be a work around for the throttle but it's been patched.
