Idiot's Guide to Nexus S and EVO3D - For Idiots - Epic 4G General

Excited by the announcement of the new Sprint phones?
Not sure which one to get?
Here's a user-friendly guide in layman's English to help you decide between the two.
I originally posted this (here) on the EVO General forum, but I'm deciding to reach out the Epic community.
If you see anything incorrect or missing, please let me know!
I'll start with the Nexus S 4G
Software:
Ships with Gingerbread
Will receive upgrades first
Will likely run Icecream (HC reworked for phones)
AOSP
No bloatware, and no Sprint apps
Hardware:
1GHz Hummingbird Processor
512MB RAM
4" Super AMOLED screen
16gb internal storage
NO MicroSD card slot
NFC Capability
5MP rear camera
VGA Front camera
1500 mAh Li-ion battery
GPU rated as good, if not slightly better than EVO3D's Adreno 220**
Unique Contour display*
*The contour display can best be seen here. Essentially, the display curves slightly at the ends and reviews have reported it feeling nice against your face. Aside from the feel, the SAMOLED display grants more vivid colors, more luminance, and more contrast, making text easy to read at most sizes.
**Which means the Nexus S will be able to display graphics on a similar caliber of the EVO3D, which is much higher than the EVO.
Layman's terms? Have you noticed how bad the N64 Emulator is on the EVO? It should run beautifully on the Nexus S, and even better on the EVO3D.
Release date: "Spring" 2011
Price: $199 on contract
Form:
An important spec of phones to some users is also their outside form. Here's what we've got on the Nexus

}
Size and weight:
63mm x 123.9mm x 10.88mm
129g
4" contour display
Feel: CNET and user reviews say it feels light, and the material feels ´lighter´without metal parts.
This will make it feel more airy, smaller, and less bulky than the current EVO, which is very similar to the EVO3D
Users have reported a 'cheapy' plastic feel to the Nexus S, similar to the Epic. Other than that, there's no decision one way or another if that could be an issue when dropping the phone.
Advice? Don't drop your phone, no matter which model. Or buy a case of some sort.
Summary:
If you end up selling your EVO for $200 (easily done), you'll be able to upgrade to this phone for free. Why would you do that? Well, it's free, and it's a hardware and, eventually, a software upgrade from the EVO. While it boasts almost the same specs as the EVO, the processor is newer and the screen displays more colors with more vibrance.
Currently, the TMO Nexus S has benchmarks that run circles around the EVO and battery life that has been reported to last ~20 hours off-charger. Sound good to you? Same to me.
The phone will definitely last you through 2011, and likely a good chunk, if not all, of 2012. I anticipate it will also be receiving Android versions 2.4 and 3.1 (If that's Ice Cream), which will be more than capable of running on this phone, even if Quad-Core phones are released and run it as well.
Aside from the hardware, the software will be top-notch. You'll receive the latest Android software updates as soon as they're released, and the dev community should be buzzing on this phone, considering its AOSP nature.
Who is this phone good for?
Economically-minded users who want a boost from their current EVO and/or want a great developing experience. If the latest and greatest Google software is your thing, this phone is for you. Keep in mind that Nexus S already runs the Honeycomb SDKs and it will be a breeze to port the AOSP Honeycomb to the Nexus S once the source is released. Further more, AOSP will finally be developing code for WiMax chips, which will help ROMs like CM in incorporating WiMax. You'll also get WiMax on CM8 (When released) first, most likely.

Intro:
"How do you follow up one of the most popular, most successful, biggest and fastest phones of 2010? In the case of the recently announced Sprint HTC EVO 3D, you give it a higher resolution screen, 3D recording and playback capability, and you open up a whole new world of user generated content. Oh, and you make it even faster and more powerful."
-Source
EVO 3D
Software:
Ships with Gingerbread
Includes Sense 2.0 (?)
Includes Sprint Software
Hardware:
1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-core processor
1GB RAM (Which can be expanded* into the External Storage, giving you up to 5GB RAM, which diminishes as you fill internal storage, down to a minimum of 1GB)
1GB Internal Storage (Previous rumors stated 4GB. This still isn't clear or confirmed at all either way.)
4.3" 3D qHD Display with a resolution of 960x540
Expandable memory: 8GB microSD card included: supports up to 32GB
Dual 5 MP cameras used to capture 3D images and videos
1.3MP front-facing camera
1730 mAh Li-ion battery
HDMI port
No kickstand... Devastating, I guess?
*Much like a page file on a PC This has also been pointed out as a rumor, and is MOST LIKELY NOT TRUE
Form:
The EVO3D is similar in look and shape to the EVO. Here's what we've got
Size and Weight:
126mm x 65mm x 12.05mm (4.96" x 2.56" x 0.47")
170 grams (6.0 ounces) with the battery
Feel:
Taken from Engadget's hands-on review:
"As we'd mentioned in our hands-on, we immediately noticed that the EVO 3D didn't feel particularly heavy or bulky in the hand; in fact, we would've guessed that it was a bit lighter than the 4G. Well, turns out they're almost exactly the same weight -- holding the two one right after the other, we couldn't detect a difference.
As for dimensions, the 4G is actually wider -- the 3D's quite a bit more manageable when you're holding it, especially if you don't have giant paws -- and they're right around the same thickness."
Price: unknown
Release date: "Summer" 2011 (June)
Summary:
If you want the latest Sprint power-phone with latest industry hardware and technology - You won't be disappointed. While there are mixed reviews and feelings about the 3D feature of the phone, it seems that 3D is completely optional and is simply an added bonus for buying this already great phone.
Battery life is undetermined right now. While it boasts an industry-leading 1730 mAh Li-ion battery and the processor is some times number more efficient than the current EVO, people speculate it to have as much batter life as the current EVO.
In short: Like your EVOs now, this phone will be fast, bold, and furious, taken to a new extreme.
EDIT: Since the question has been asked on the forums, I've done a little bit of research:
How will the EVO 3D's display hold up against iPhone 4's?
To answer it shortly, the EVO 3D has a slightly lower resolution (960x540) than the iPhone 4 (960x640). Being that the EVO3D has a larger screen and a lower resolution, this means that the PPI (pixels per inch) will be lower, resulting in a slightly less sharp display.
Who is this phone good for?
Power-users who want only the best for themselves. Want to play the latest 3D graphics-intensive games on your phone? EVO3D is for you (please don't mistake 3D graphics for 3D images)
If you buy into the 3D thing, you'll also be able to shoot and view photos and videos in 3D.
This phone has power, screen size, and speed that make it worthwhile to keep far into the future.

IMPORTANT INFO REGARDING SPRINT:

Basically, they've split premier bonuses into two categories: Silver and Gold
You qualify for Silver status if:
Your monthly base plan is between $69.99 and $89.98 for a SINGLE LINE or between $99.99 and $169.98 for SHARED PLANS.
Silver has the standard 2-year upgrades
You qualify for Gold status if:
Your monthly base plan is $89.99 or more for a single line, or $169.99 or more for shared plans.
OR
If you've been a Sprint customer for 10 or more years
GOLD PREMIER has the one-year upgrade eligibility on the primary line
If you are a student and already on Sprint or planning to switch
Check out this thread regarding a 23% online discount for students.
If you are not a Sprint customer and are thinking of switching over, here's a promotion for you
http://www.samacharexpress.com/2011/03/sprint-offers-150-50-to-wireless-defectors/
They offer $150 for you to switch from them, if you buy a smart phone. Pretty nice deal!
Deal running through 4/16, but call Sprint to check.

awesome thread...anyway to add the galaxy sII on this list to compare?

Is that a Sprint phone?

I wish the Nexus was coming out sooner. I just talked my wife into ET her contract with T-Mo and getting a Nexus when its released.

Price of Evo3d off contract? I got $550 in the bank as a reserve for it right now with my Epic and Evo to sell to cover the cost after paying for it. Think it will cost more than $550 without contract? My gold status doesn't give me upgrade options till September and that is no good.

the only way i will buy the evo3d is if the screen quality is better then the evo..im so in love with the super amoled for its blacks and colors that im afraid to go away from the galaxy 2

If your asking about the nexus s than yes. Its literally identical in every way except slightly thicker but from what Ive read from multiple previews, its not really noticable to the naked eye. Its a little thicker due to the CDMA radio and WiMAX radio. Heres some pics comparing the two. (T-mo vs Sprint)

No... he was asking about the SGS II that someone mentioned.
It hasn't been announced to be on Sprint yet, but it's assumed it will be after the way the first SGS panned out.

Hope so, Definitely getting the SGSII if hits sprint.

Both sound awesome, but I can't ditch the Super Amoled screen! And I want to get my money's worth for my Epic, so switching over so soon for a somewhat "old" Nexus S is out of the question for me. But count me in for a Galaxy S II!

i dont feel either of those phones are worth the upgrade over my current evo... i have my eyes set on the gsII! As long as Sprint leaves out the physical keyboard.

That's the thing... they're not meant to be an upgrade really, more of a side-grade.
I like the idea of the Nexus S as an alternative to the Epic.... can't really say one way or another that one is better. They're the same damn thing at heart.
Which is exactly why I want one...

Go to the Verizon store to play with a display thunderbolt. Go on the YouTube app and then search hd video sample choose a video and do the same with your epic. The thunderbolt looks damn good.
Now imagine that with a display that has even better quality than the thunderbolts with a HIGHER resolution. That's what the evo 3d will have. 100x better than evo 1

I'm glad to see this thread is taking off here! I'd be glad to add info on the SGSII as soon as I have some info to post!

I could swear I read that SGSII is coming to Sprint without a physical keyboard.
I was searching google and now can't find any evidence of this anywhere.
Does anyone else have any information on this?

I know this.might not be on topic but since we are talking about HTC I thought id bring it up. What's up with HTC making the thunderbolt so locked down. They signed bootloader, kernel and put the security on there? Sounds like a Motorola thing. I'm not getting that evo3d if they do that **** to hysterical phone. What do u all think?

I agree. The whole point of the Android OS was to allow the end-user and developers the ability to modify and create what they want (for the most part). It was a slap in Apple's face. But with manufacturers starting to lock down the experience (as Apple does), I fear Android will suffer. Google should not allow this from the manufacturers as they are tearing down the Android/Google model.
But, money talks and big business always beats the consumer.

Next Generation HTC Dream/G1 coming soon..

According to boygeniusreport.com the HTC Vision, a rumored Android smartphone is in fact a variant of the Desire complete with a sliding FULL QWERTY keypad.
See original article here --->> http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2010/05/21/htc-vision-rumored-to-be-a-desire-with-qwerty-keypad/
I'm hopeful it comes to the U.S. as we need a direct competitor to the Verizon Droid phones that are confirmed out.
More importantly we need a truly amazing phone to finally move on from the HTC Dream/G1
Specs:
3.7″ WVGA display
5 megapixel camera
1GHz processor
Android 2.1 or 2.2?

Its an artist rendition, no one said that's how its going to look like. hahaha
For now its a rumored phone but many different sources are indicating the validity of the claim so more likely than not it will likely appear in the following months.
Most people have been waiting for a upgrade from the HTC Dream/G1 for a long while now.
Thanks for your comment but not everyone is going to agree with you.

Found this in a few minutes, even if it does have "Sense" so you can easily turn it off
Just like you would with a custom Rom, I do this all the time if I choose to change the Launcher or Home Replacement. LOL
------>> http://www.androidguys.com/2009/10/22/how-to-turn-off-htc-sense/
Or you could root the phone and tell Sense to **** off. I for one can't wait for a Nexus-like device with a keyboard. Why didn't HTC make one sooner? They knew the G1 sold like hot cakes.
God, I've been dying a good HTC qwerty phone. I've been using my MT3G for near a year now, and have gotten pretty used to the virtual KB, but I gotta say I still miss my old G1's slide out KB
Its not technically a G1 sucessor IMO. The myTouch Slide is.

Look closely at the Mytouch Slide specs, its a step back and is more last generation than Next Generation.
We need something that can compete with this:

i dont fully agree with that the specs are right on and better in some places than the motorolla droid so its not last generation at all. plus it looks fast and is getting the 2.2 update so i dont see how its last gen if its getting all the new hardware and has the same specs as one of the better selling phones

Mytouch Slide may look like a duck but it doesn't quack like a duck:
The 600MHz ARM processor is unacceptable vs the 1GHz processor the Vision would have, Droid Incredible has now.
Just like a computer the faster the processor the better the device.
T-Mobile needs to be cutting edge so it retains its customer base, everyone and their grandma wants to have an Android now
If they don't stay at it to offer the newest, most innovative android phones there are plenty of other companies that will.

I fully agree. You can look at the mytouch slide and can see it was a step back in hardware from Nexus and a step back from the high end Android phones on Verizon / Sprint *Evo an Incredible* So I wont be wasting a 2 year agreement on the mytouch slide but will also wait for a 1ghz keyboard android phone.

That is a very bold statement and totally flawed. One could conceivably shoehorn a 6-core opteron chip onto a phone and it would be wickedly fast and versatile, problem is that it would drain the battery dead in SECONDS. You really need to think about things for a bit -- why, if "faster is better" would intel be making such a killing off the ATOM chips? Why isn't anyone building phones with Intel's or AMD's fastest chips?
Because faster is NOT better! In a phone, EFFICIENT is better. The difficult part about building a phone is balancing the performance with the available BATTERY CAPACITY. You can make a wickedly fast phone, but without battery technology capable of keeping it running for a decent amount of time, it is pointless.
IMO, the 720x chips in DREAM/MAGIC are plenty. The 3D component could use some advancement, but the CPU itself is lots. We're not trying to win speed races here!

T-Mobile is NOT A PHONE MANUFACTURER!!!!
They are a MOBILE SERVICE PROVIDER.
The phones they sell are made by any number of actual hardware manufacturers, including HTC, Motorola, Nokia, etc. Having one phone or another really doesn't matter in terms of SERVICE PROVISION. Especially since they use SIMCARDS -- you can buy ANY phone you like and use it. The only things affecting whether they have customers or not is their PRICE and SERVICE QUALITY.

I know that that's just a painting of what someone expects the phone to look like and it doesn't necessarily match anything, but I really hope that if this device is real, that it doesn't have that stupid angle between the keyboard and the screen. A straight slide is fine, but too many weird movements really will destroy durability.
On the plus side, if the picture is accurate, the keyboard looks just about PERFECT. Even better than the DREAM's keyboard even, and that's saying a lot! 5 rows with ARROW KEYS!!!! Beautiful.
Only thing we'd have to do is strip that SENSE crap off it!
If it is going to look like that then I am in for one. I am not going to give up my G1 until a good phone comes out to blow it out of the water. Even more so now with having rooted my phone and CM 5.0.7 stable installed. I just hope we can kill some of the bloatware fluff and keep it smooth because T-Mobile insist on limiting us on RAM.... WTH? An extra 512mb is only a few cents more, pass the cost onto the customers if that is such an issue!

In regards to the faster processor someone just has to read from the experiences a Nexus One user has about the performance and realize that a 1Ghz is indeed wanted by current users pushing thier G1's to its limits. Its up to the person if they want a 600Mhz or a 1Ghz processor true enough but for me the 1Ghz is a no brainer. Most of these Nexus One owners are mainly ex-G1 and Mytouch so only they can understand the real difference which is quite significant espcially due to them not having a keyboard anymore and them being satisfied with thier purchase.
There are times when I am using an emulator and saying to myself how much smoother and less laggy this would be if I ran a phone with a better 3D processor and a faster CPU to support it. Im sure many others would also agree with this.
Also, no one said T-Mobile was the phone manufacturer but it is up to them which phones they have in thier lineup one way or another. I know how and why but thats beside the point. Verizon in particular with thier marketing dept. have made the "Droid" franchise one of the biggest one yet, I am reminded daily when there is a commercial on the TV. I love T-Mobile but also realize that if they do not offer a suitable G1/Mytouch replacement with a modern eye pleasing body and styling, high quality and suitable size screen, full qwerty keyboard, 2.1 or 2.2, high megapixel camera, bleeding edge CPU, capable 3D processor and a suitable battery to support all of this many people are going to leave the company if they havent already.
We all realize this website is almost exclusive for our HTC phones. While many buy unlocked phones at a premium price many more xda members actually get thier phones directly from thier service provider as I said when I mentioned T-Mobile earlier because with a contract it is more than paid for through the length of it. Most of the time its under $200.00 with a 2-year contract vs. $450.00+ without if its new to the market and cutting edge.
If you want a 1ghz processor, get a nexus one. End of story. If you would rather have a 600mhz processor and a keyboard, get a slide. You have options. No sense in *****ing about them or blaming companies for YOUR inability to make a decision. If you want the droid, get it, if you want the incredible, get it. Problem is YOU don't want to pay for it, you want it for free or discounted. Well, Your also SOL. SO pay the price to get what you want, or don't and get something more in your price range.
We know what high end phones should be. Right now that seems to be similar spec'd phones to the Evo, Incredible, etc. Adding a keyboard does not add much except bulk. So why are they not making equivalent high end sliders? Who knows?
Adding a keyboard is not going to add a drastic drain on battery life. So arguing that sliders should not get a 1 Ghz processor because of battery drain, when there are phones already out with the same processor, is moot.
All we are asking for is equivalently spec'd phones to the current high end line of iClones. It is not that difficult to grasp... Really. I promise.
Personally, I would pay $1000 or more for the right high end Android slider... They just don't make it yet.
Certainly looks a lot better than the MyTouch Slide. I hope it's something like that phone. I love my G1! Especially the keyboard. Really hope they make a new G1.. :\
I did a post about it.
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/index....rocessor-35mm-jack-atmel-maxtouch-sensor-etc/
http://forums.t-mobile.com/t5/T-Mob...n-Processor-3-5-mm-Jack-amp-Atmel/td-p/366743
(Well instead of what I said in the forum about looking the same.. Maybe a remodeled, but still similar design)
the keyboard looks like the touch pro 2 one...looks like a fake image?
I am going to add a little more to my last post...
As long as they do not try to mimic the Verizon Kin Two in looks I will be happy. I was attempting to mess with that phone yesterday at the Microsoft Store in Scottsdale, AZ..... Personally I think the feel sucks, it was harder to type on than the G1, and it was slow loading up pages. The only thing I did like was the heavy clear coating on the outside on the top of the phone.

VS
There’s quite the debate going at the moment regarding these two devices. Motorola has done a great job with the Motorola Atrix 4G and with the specs of the Motorola Droid Bionic being out as well, it seems that both of them are up to the task when it comes to raw performance. Now the question which might arise for a lot of you is – which one should I buy? Spec wise they are pretty similar and we know for a fact that one of them is quite the beast, so the question is raised once more : Which one should I get, or even, which one is better?
Motorola DROID Bionic and the Motorola Atrix 4G. Destined for two different carriers, both the DROID Bionic and the Atrix 4G are 4G phones, but use different technology to get there. The DROID Bionic connects at 4G speeds to Verizon Wireless’ LTE network, while the Atrix 4G streams data using AT&T’s HSPA+ technology. Once the data arrives at the phone, it will be processed and displayed by more powerful hardware than what is currently on the market, including LCD screens with 540 x 960-pixel resolution. These two phones have all sorts of power up their sleeves, including an expansion docking keyboard for the Atrix 4G and dual-core processors for both phones.
The Motorola Atrix 4G has been released for a while now and impressed a lot of reviewers as well as a huge user base – evidence that the device is indeed a beast. The specs are top notch, the build quality is high and performance wise the Atrix 4G packs quite the punch. The only drawback might be the fact that it comes with a locked bootloader, but I think that Average Joe won’t be too bothered by that.
The following information table may help you know more about Motorola Atrix 4G and Motorola DROID Bionic, you can read for more details.
Motorola Atrix 4G Vs Motorola Droid Bionic Text Review
Connectivity:
The Atrix runs at 3G network with HSDPA and HSUPA technology and offers WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, DLNA, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP and EDR, microUSB 2.0, while the Bionic utilizes Rev.A up to 3.1 Mbps and runs at LTE technology, other than that, this phone comes with Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and DLNA facilities, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP and EDR and microUSB 2.0.
Size & Weight:
The Bionic looks bigger than the Atrix, and it can be one of your main considerations to choose one of the two phones. Size does matter, meaning that it would be nice to hold the slimmer and smaller phone and find it easy to put it into your pocket.
The Atrix measures 117.8 x 63.5 x 10.1 mm and weighs in at 136 g, while the Bionic measures 125.9 x 66.9 x 13.3 mm and weighs in at 158g.
Camera:
The Bionic’s camera is much superior compared with the Atrix’s. It has 8-megapixel autofocus camera that sports 3264×2448 pixels and dual-LED flash featuring geo-tagging, face detection and image stabilization. The Atrix only sports a 5-megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash, measuring 2592×1944 pixels. There are two features to follow, geo-tagging and image stabilization.
Display:
Both phones come with the exact same display quality since each keeps a TFT capacitive touchscreen with 16M colors measuring 540×960 pixels. The apparent difference is on the display size in which the Atrix sports a 4.0 inches screen, while the Bionic uses a 4.3 inches screen.
The Bionic’s display would be the winner of any comparison of display, even if it is conducted with many other smartphones, because it has the spectacular qHD technology. More than that, the Bionic’s display is a bit bigger than the Atrix’s to give you more comfort in browsing the web and watching videos.
Performance:
Reportedly, both phones use the exact same type of processor, that is 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 AP20H Dual Core processor, and each runs the Android 2.2 Froyo. We can say nothing to this comparison, for each would be the strongest and the most powerful smartphone to date.
Storage:
Storage capacity will determine which phone to perform better, meaning that a bigger space would be supportive point to motivate the handset to run faster. The Atrix has 16GB storage and 1GB RAM, while its external memory is facilitated up to 32GB. The Bionic comes with 16GB storage, 512MB RAM and 2GB ROM. The external memory can be expanded up to 32GB.
Battery life:
Both phones use the exact same battery type, that is the Lithium 1930 mAh. It can be simply concluded that both phones are tie at this point.
Conclusion:
The Atrix is designed for people with crazy-busy working days. It has a Laptop Dock allowing you to dock the Atrix and turn it into a real computing device. You can connect the dock via both micro-USB and HDMI ports on the phone. When you get the Atrix connected to the dock, there’s an 11.6-inch monitor takes over the phone’s features. There’s also a full-size keyboard to give you huge chance to type messages faster, comfortably, and a better web browsing or video watching would be more, more fun because you can connect the Atrix to a TV or monitor as well.
On the other hand, the Droid Bionic comes with its own killer hardware and placing the specialty on its ability in running at lighting speeds. The capacitive qHD display is spectacular and the package of next-generation LTE speeds would make you stunned. The dual-core 1GHz processor featuring 512MB of the desktop-grade DDR2 variety is qualified for pocket PC requirements.
All in all, the Bionic is much stronger than the Atrix. The Bionic has a better camera, more spacious storage, and a better display quality. But, it would, again, depend on your personal preference. You can just pick the Atrix if you find it more useful.
I think this article is underplaying the difference in RAM between the two phones, but I guess we'll have to wait to see how much difference it really makes in performance.
ummm there isnt Microsoft Outlook Support..... if there really is then how the hell do you get it?!
And i find it odd how one of the three points mentioned in the very last line as to why the Bionic is the stronger phone is "more spacious storage". Eer.... how? both come standard with 16GB, and can optionally have an additional 32GB via the MicroSD card slot. The Atrix has an extra 512MB of RAM. If they're considering the 2GB ROM as "storage".... then i think they have confused the definition of "storage" for the typical person. That being "storage" is something that's usable to store information on.
And if they use the exact same display.... then i feel a lot of people... or at least a lot of people here on XDA, would probably consider the Atrix's display to have superior quality due to the slightly smaller pentile screen.
As for the camera..... well..... who really relies on their phone camera for anything but a spur-of-the-moment, always on hand camera? Not likely to see someone taking wedding photos or something important with a point and shoot let alone a cell phone camera. The most i really use my phone camera for is for the things i find either neat, or just plain odd. Like if i see a sweet car in a parking lot (like the Lotus Elise i happened to see at a local gas station which surprised the sh*t outta me), or if i want to show someone how funny the potato chip aisle at the local Giant looks on Superbowl Sunday.
^ Very accurate comments. Not sure how the storage is better on the bionic. The screen could go either way. The display quality should be better on the atrix if everything is the same aside from actual screen size as the atrix will have better pixel density. Some people would prefer a slightly larger screen though. I'd still say that the atrix screen would be considered better, even if it is at the sacrifice of a little extra screen size.
I can understand wanting a better camera, but it's definitely not high ranking in terms of important hardware. I personally would prefer having the extra RAM over a slightly better camera. I'm guessing the people that really use their camera on a regular basis are aware of this and will probably favor the bionic for that reason. Like you said, though, most users probably use the camera for quick, unexpected shots when they're out and about. Many people will end up bringing an actual camera for any anticipated events.
The review definitely favors the Bionic without a good enough explanation. Realistically, I'd say both are fairly equal phones meant for different people. If only they had combined into 1... LTE connection with dual core, 1GB RAM and an 8 MP camera. I hate to make unfair accusations, but the way they describe some aspects of the phones almost makes it seem like they don't quite get how everything works. They don't even mention that RAM affects performance. They also say the battery life should be the same, though I'd expect there to be some differences considering the different hardware. Maybe it all magically balances out to be pretty even, but I wouldn't conclude that without more information.
512mb isn't enough ram. I hover around 400mb free and dip down to 200 regularly. Maybe that will change when the bootloader is unlocked.
Im cringing at the idea of a 4.3 pentile display.

It talks as though the Atrix does not have a qHD display...and then says the Bionic display wins by all other devices because it's qHD. Sorry Atrix I guess your almost identical qHD display isn't cool enough to be considered.
"The Atrix is designed for people with crazy-busy working days" or maybe its designed for just people but they advertise it for business to bring in buyers for their laptop dock. Just a thought.
This is the most BS statement of them all:

Upcoming Incredible 4g model...

As, I approach my upgrade time. I am pondering my options... and wondering what others are thinking.
When I first read about this phone model (the upcoming Incredible 4g), I was not not especially impressed. But with more leaked info, I wonder is this actually my ideal (or very near ideal) phone.
1. It supposedly will have the S4 Krait processor. This is an upgrade over anything currently on Verizon. I didn't realize that it was going to get this processor. If it doesn't have this processor, then I really don't have any interest. I thought the Incredible 4g was just a smaller Rezound. I was wrong. This processor is an improvement over phones like the Rezound and G Nexus.
2. I have not liked the idea of the newer phones eliminating the SD card. This phone will have a SD card slot... plus 8 gigs internal.
3. It will have a removable battery, another thing that myself and many others have not liked about other new models coming out. I have managed to get excellent life out of my stock Dinc1 battery... but I've always been happy to know that there are bigger replacements available if I wanted them... or if the stock battery were to get weak with age.
4. I am torn by the manufacturers making screens bigger and bigger on phones (and with greater and greater numbers of pixels to control and illuminate). Those screens sure look nice... but I'm not crazy about how much power they use. The Incredible 4g has a qHD 4" screen, so it should look nice enough, and not use that much juice (compared to the 720p phones with 4.7" screens). Also importantly to me, it will be comfortable to stick in my pockets. I just don't watch movies or TV shows on my phone. Yeah, I've done it, just to do it. But, I've got more comfortable options... like our couch and plasma TV (or even our computers).
5. Integrated LTE on the chip? 4g speeds... less battery usage than current 4g phones... thaz awesome...
6. 1gig RAM... same as everything else out there...
7. Nice enough camera (same as ONE series)... Beats (meh whatever)... etc...
8. I do play games, to kill time on my phone, but I often tend to prefer the casual type puzzle games. High performance gaming isn't especially important to me, but still this phone should be nicely capable of playing most games very well.
I know this phone does not follow the "slim and sexy" trend that is happening in phone fashion. I just wonder if I am the only weirdo "anti-fashion" person out there. Plus it looks to be reasonably priced. Anybody else think this phone looks preferable than the other new options coming?
And most importantly... anybody think this phone will get good developer support? Just wondering how others view this phone...
I also approach my upgrade time (I think its in June) and as it approaches I'm paying more attention to what's out there. This new incredible seems to hit all the right spots. The only thing I wish it had wad a 720p screen. Qhd certainly isn't a deal breaker though.
I'm eagerly awaiting the announcement of the Incredible 4G. However I'm also waiting to see what the Galaxy S3 has to offer. I may end up waiting a little longer for that. I dont mind morw waiting as I love my incredible and its simply the best phone I've ever owned.
If my incredible broke today and I was offered an early upgrade id probably opt for a Razr Maxx.

not exactly. early upgrade is an incentive.
verizon emailed me an early upgrade offer for 50 bucks off any new phone last week...
and today snail mailed me an offer for 100 dollars off.
they just want you contracting another 2 years... thats where the real money is at.
My upgrade was up the first of April, and I watched it go by. Honestly, for what I really do with the phone it just didn't make sense to drop the coin on something new that would meet or exceed some of my expectations but let me down in others.
One of the biggest drawbacks to most of these phones coming out (IMO....) is the size of em. Damn, if I wanted an Ipad, I'd buy the dang thing.... These new phones look beautiful but having to wear a hubcap around my waist because it won't fit in my pockets anymore, I just don't dig.
I have been so pleased with the first gen INC that when I heard the INC 4g was coming out, and the screen size, man, I said that's the ticket, faster, and still good size, removable batt, sd card, I'm in, I'm all in......
You raise a very good argument on the OP. The only thing I would need is a guarantee that Devs will get CM9 running on it. My Dinc right now is perfect with CM9.
Not sure how many Inc devs can or will get the Inc 4g due to all getting the rezound. And there's no guarantee of anything before its done. Most likely it will get cm9 but don't quote me on that.
And ics, while OK on the Inc is far from perfect. Camcorder and video don't work 100% on cm9. One of the reasons I got the nexus is to have the best initial support with ICS working smooth without any complex porting.

I'm glad to see some people with something positive to say about this phone. There has been a lot of bad reaction out there for what ever reason. I suspect its people just not understanding about the processor. I've got an upgrade on the 25th, and this thing is supposed to hit the 26th. I'm pretty excited.
I'll probably use it the first month pretty much stock, and then start branching out as things become available. Also looking forward to CM9. I may keep a recovery around to play with and one for actual use with 100% function. If it doesn't come with a 32 gb class 10 sd card, that will be my first upgrade to it. Hoping they pack a nice battery in it.
I think as a OneS variant, there won't be too much difficulty finding devs to take interest.

Well we have 4 days til launch, almost 3, and we've received no word of demo units coming in. So unless they come in tomorrow, I'm doubting that April 26th launch. Perhaps that's when the demo units are coming in? I believe the leaked documents did say "Device workshop" on April 26th.(Although I'm not all too sure what that is). It definitely should be coming within the next two weeks if it misses that release date though.
This phone will certainly be the perfect phone for me when it comes out, if the rumored specs are true. Really hoping this phone gets good dev support too.
We've been discussing the Incredible 4G for a while over in this thread, and I'll repeat my overall opinion here: When this phone comes out it will be hands-down the best phone available on Verizon. All of the websites out there that call it mid-range are out of their minds.
Here are some thoughts I have on some of the OP's points:

The processor is not the only improvement over the Rezound... there are so many more. The only reason people compare this phone to the Rezound is the aesthetic similarity. That's really the only thing these two phones have in common.

That is likely, but not a given. Early reports were able to 100% confirm some things like "yes, it has a microSD slot." Those reports didn't come right out and say that the battery is removable though. But, they did say that the backplates are interchangeable, which is a good indication that we'll have battery access

It certainly wont be sexy... it's an Incredible. Have you seen these things?
That said, it will be slim and light. Probably not as much as the One S (because this one needs LTE and the One S probably has a little more room to stuff things because of the bigger screen), but the initial reports are that it is very thin and light.

On Verizon, absolutely. There is nothing better. That is, as long as you are cool with the smaller screen size
The only reason not to get it is the screen size... A lot of people have been begging for a high-end 4" phone, and now they finally have one. That said, some people just "need" those mammoth 4.5+" screens. If you're one of the latter, then this phone is probably not the best bet.
For everyone else though, this will be the best phone you can get when it comes out... and the price is looking like it will cost less than the original incredible did at release, which is a bonus

It has to. There's no way they would release it without the S4 (at least, not for more than like 50 bucks)
Sidenote: I'm a bit bummed by the price. I never really believed the "$100 or $150" rumors, but I was hoping that Verizon would stop the $299 madness and go back to $199 that used to be the standard (and is becoming the standard again on other carriers... look at the new Evo for example)
Althought... the site was never really intended to go live... so maybe they just copied a template and hadn't actually finished with it... i.e. hadn't fixed the price yet.

Oh, lol. Yea, I don't think even the Motoroloas actually put "Droid" on the device.
Thanks for the additional info demarcmj. I certainly am not any authority on this phone. If anything I said was untrue, it was unintentional. Mostly I was expressing my opinions about the phone specs, just for myself, and they way I would use it.
I'm glad you shared your thoughts and could bring better detailed info.
For example: The comment about the "nice enough" camera was a little tongue in cheek. It is an excellent camera, for a phone camera. I've got other gear for taking pictures. For me, the camera on my Dinc1 is "nice enough". I really only use it for scanning QR codes.
I'm pretty bummed about the $299 price tag, too. The One X is on ATT for $199.
The Incredible 4g (with its non-HD screen) is not going to sell many units at $299. That is craziness, Verizon.

No fights, like HTC is better than Samsung.. You can for instance, discuss One X vs Sgs3, but stay on-topic and don't end up in a fight.
This thread will be watched
I personally think it looks great. The small little features like wireless charging, a buzz if missed calls sound genius. Most people are overlooking these and looking straight at the stats. It's a great phone.
Sent from my Galaxy S running Slim ICS 3.5 and Midnight kernel from my XDA Premium app.
great features and specs, but i think it is totally hideous. It got killed by the home button being odly shaped and the corners start to round before the top of the screen. Just my opinion though, its stilla nice phone
I like the Smart Stay, Android 4.0.4 and ICS-y TouchWiz (now we know why SGS2 get Gingerbread-y TouchWiz).
It isn't near as bad as many people are making it seem. It's just because of how big of a deal Samsung made it that makes it more of a let down. If this was just announced normally at an event like MWC then people wouldn't be having that big of an issue. It's just how it got over hyped with Samsung sending it out to be tested in secret boxes, no leaks for anything at all, it's own big press conference, etc. It was sickening reading in the One X section with all their biased opinions on a phone they've never even seen or tried first person. Give it a chance.

Really, nice specs but it's hideous.
I gotta admit, It's a bit of a letdown. It looks a bit goofy but I have the feeling that a proper first hand hands on will turn my opinion around again, they are going for function over form with this one I guess. Also It has a pentile screen but seeing from videos and hearing description of reviewers is not enough to judge this category. Overall, I think the hate from many place will die down once it is released just like iPhone 4S, people are shouting, mocking, and taunting because it's only an iteration but suddenly no one is hating it anymore.

That's because no-one cares for the iPhone. They get what Apple gives them. Period. Android users do have a choice and over-hyped products that look like something blue and ugly crawled from the sea, made sex with a pebble and then gave birth to this thing, rarely stand a chance. It will still sell but won't be the success S2 was.
I really thought Samsung would put something nice on the table this time. Now I know why they didn't show it on MWC. Side by side with the HOX it would be a media disaster for them.
And all the fun we have with it at the HOX forum, is because the Samsung fanboys who never owned a HOX were saying for the past month "S3 will blow it out of the water" and now we saw what they meant. Noone wants to be in the same ocean with something as ugly as this thing. In a year and a half *maybe* there will be some apps that will run slightly better on the S3, but it will still be as ugly as it is today with the same ugly pentile screen.

Galaxy S III vs. HTC One X
I wanna take this time to give a fair comparison of the Galaxy S III to HTC's flagship One X. Let me start by saying I am not a fanboy for any brand. I like any device that works, and works well. I choose my devices based on build quality, specs, and features. Software is never a dealbreaker for me, as I usually prefer to load custom ROM's (CM/AOSP mostly). That said, I must say I am quite impressed with the Galaxy S III so far.
In my own honest opinion (and without starting any fights), I felt like the original Galaxy S and even the GS2 were way overhyped. Yes, I agree that they are good devices, but I feel like they didn't really scream out "next gen" when they launched. With the specs on paper and even in real world benchmarks, the first 2 generations only just gave their Nexus counterparts a run for their money. At first glance, it looks like the GS3 is finally going to push the bar to the next level. Of course, HTC also has it's high-end contenders, and this time around it happens to be the One X.
Now, I am in the market for a new phone, and I was highly considering the One X. With all the hype leading up to the GS3, I thought about the previous two generations, and prematurely decided the third gen would end up like the first two. Well, I stand corrected. I could easily see myself buying a GS3, but I am still undecided. On one hand, I have always loved HTC's build quality, and the One X's features definitely fits my requirements. But on the other hand, the Galaxy S III has a few things HTC missed.
When it comes to raw horsepower, both devices are definitely packing a lot of power, so that leaves other things to consider. While I have yet to actually handle each phone in my own hands, my first impression about build quality would go to HTC's polycarbonate unibody design. I always prefer a body not made of plastic, but then again, the Gorilla Glass 2 on Samsung's flagship does give it an upper hand. So all in all, it's still a tie.
When it comes to the camera, HTC definitely wins here. Sure, both devices are 8MP, but as a photographer, I know that the lens makes all the difference. The HTC One X has a beautiful wide angle lens with f/2.0, and from what I've read, Samsung put more effort into the software, leaving it with just an average lens at best. HTC also spent a lot time perfecting their camera software, so they get bonus points for paying attention to all the small details.
Two other important factors for me are the ability to remove the battery and add an external microSD. Unfortunately, this is where HTC made their mistakes, and Samsung was right there to make it right. These are actually two of the biggest things that are giving me second thoughts about buying the One X, and opting for the GS3 instead.
But then I start thinking about the screen. Quality is more important to me than size, and while Samsung's may be a tenth of an inch bigger, it appears that HTC's Super IPS LCD2 wins here. Not to say Samsung's screen isn't good, but I was a bit surprised to see they forgot the Plus part of their HD Super AMOLED. Maybe they did this to leave some room for improvement when another variant of the GS3 comes out in the next 3-4 months. Who knows...
Other than a few other minor differences that could go either way, one final important feature is the battery itself. We all know smartphones are power hungry, so it goes without saying that Samsung's removable 2100mAh gives it an upper edge. Hopefully, it's enough to keep the phone charged for at least a couple of days. HTC's 1800mAh may also last a couple days, partially thanks to the Tegra 3's fifth power-saving core. But when it comes right down to it, 2100mAh simply sounds better. And did I mention it's removable?
This leaves me stuck with a hard decision to make. I'm sure I'll be happy either way, but in both cases, there will be some sacrifices to make, yet there will always be the satisfaction of having a powerful device nonetheless. You win some, you lose some.
I'm also considering a new tablet as well, so if only the Asus Padfone would come out. That would make this decision even harder!
I wish I had enough money to buy both
Love it
Gonna buy it !
Thats all i have to say!!
Best regards !
Awesome specs, design ain't so good. But for christ sake, what a hell of a specs.
I'd give my someone's left nut to have it

Had the original SGS and was originally holding out for the SGS3, and opted to go the HOX when it came out given the specs and couldn't be bothered waiting for the SGS3, and timing with my contract coming up for renewal.
S-Voice - Interested there's finally competition to Siri, but something I wouldn't use anyway.
Wireless Charging - Slow and a novelty.
Vibrate when pick up phone for notifications - Very neat, but if I'm picking up my phone, 9/10 I'll be looking at it anyway
Eye-focus thing - Very neat, only big feature I would quite like.
Now so glad I didn't wait around for it.

Touch Wiz vs Sense
Touchwiz was one of the first if not the first to implement hardware acceleration and is one of the smoothest most resource friendly launchers. Back with gingerbread, touchwiz browser was pure butter....one of the smoothest i've ever used and definitely still one of the smoothest i've used. It's also battery efficient etc....
Sense on the otherhand is a resource hog, not very battery friendly, and mostly just looks good. Touchwiz is ugly, but there's a huge dev community for the galaxy phones so getting rid of it and flashing AOSP or anything was super simple.
As for user friendly, touchwiz is probably one of the simplest to use. Also looks kinda like iOS buttons which might help a bit but w/e. In terms of out of the box performance, samsung software > HTC software

What surprises me in these benchmarks is how close the GS2 performs to the One X. Disappointing on One X' part if you ask me.
As we showed in our SGS3 performance preview, the handset is, as Samsung described it, capable of posting "superlative" benchmark numbers with its 1.4 GHz Exynos 4 Quad SoC. It goes without saying that even with TouchWiz running atop Android 4.0.4, the SGS3 is butter smooth, everywhere. - Anandtech

The One X has been in available around the world for a month now, and none of those are mass reported problems. Since the SIII is not released yet or even reviewed, I can't see how you think SIII will be problem free.
I like the screen on the One X over my Note (same amoled as SIII), the colour are more accurate and its much brighter in direct sunlight. As for CPU/GPU, both are more than powerful enough to make no difference for day to day use.
Overall, apart from removable battery and micro sd card, SIII and One X are too very close to call. I think both phone will do well over the next few months. The SIII is more suited to the power users, but One X have the WOW factor the SIII lacks, which will do will with general public who don't really care about removable battery or expendable storage.

No Flex Issues - Same Material used in Previous Galaxy

No Stuttering Videos - Proven Exynos CPU and Video Player Both made in-house by Samsung for superior cooperation.
There, happy? And yes I'd like both do to well and push Android further but this is a nerd tech phone forum, why not have some fun ^_^
Threads like this remind me a little bit about Top Gear, where they say a car can't be cool if you have to explain WHY it's cool.
With the one x, you can just show it to someone, and they will be "wow, that's cool". With the SGS3, they will think it looks ugly/bland but may be won over after you spend 5 mins telling/showing them why it's cool.
And yes, phones are all about being cool

It's not a POS that's for sure. But there are some real issues and I don't think people should ignore them. Lets keep things a little more pro brother lol.
The rattling sound that people complain about is when they press a button and it vibrates. They think the sound of the vibration is a rattle

The real question is can *you* handle the truth? The truth that CPU benchmarks are a pile of useless s.it that have nothing to do with real life usage experience? The truth that tegra optimized apps will always run better on the one x and there are no whatever-samsung-called-their-cpu optimized apps and won't be for quite some time? The truth that HOX has more beautiful screen than the pentile SAMOLED? The truth that difference in performance *might* be felt after a year and a half when both these phones will be old news? The truth that that's a year and a half you'll have to live with the downright ugliness of the sg3? The truth that that's a year and a half you'll have to live with the cheapness of the shiny plastic? The truth that that's a year and a half you'll have to live with the inferior screen? The truth that after that year and a half finally passes the only apps that will show any difference will run bad on the sg3 and worse on the HOX because both will be outdated?
Can you?

If I get a SIII I hope I don't have to see useless threads like this in this forum for the next year.
Thread will be closed i am sure in a while..These threads are not necessary. No need to make yourself feel good bro just because you are getting a new toy. Enjoy your new toy and no need to bash others just because they made another choice..Both phones are great and both have their own good points. Even though most are just gimmicks from the iphone (yes S-Voice just a copy from Siri) and really even though i love the features of the phone it still does not cry out innovating from some parts of it..anyways if i did not had my one x i would be going for the s3 cause i still believe it is a good phone but the issues you are stating about the one x not everyone has it..so best go and do your research again. Plus each time i press the water lockscreen it will probably make me wanna go and have a leak.. and on that note
First & foremost I'm an Android Fan & not brand specific and will go with who ever I believe will give me the best end user experience.
I like the One X, I also think it has a very nice display, I like sense as a UI & the unit feels nice in the hand, play with my sisters one most days even to the point where I even ordered one, which I then cancelled due to the impending SIII launch.
Now the SIII is here I have ordered one, mainly due to the larger replaceable battery, full size sim (I have other network contracts) and Micro SD Support. These three things alone kill the HOX stone dead for me and I would guess quite a number of others who have multiple handsets.
I think seriously looks a very subjective thing, but when fashion fades only style remains. In the most part these things normally end up in some sort of protective casing which renders the looks aspect moot in most cases.
In 18months time, when the you have stopped looking at it aesthetically and just use it as a day to day communication, entertainment and productivity tool, what is really going to matter?
To me it will be.
Ease of use, battery life, reliability, compatibility & decent brightness in daylight.
I'm I really going to care about the differences in terms of Screen Technology's on a day to day basis, I doubt it, its a phone at the end of the day as long as the display is good that's all the really matters personally. Not for the least part there will be something better by then the anyway.
They are both really good High end devices which will hopefully push Android even further in front of a certain fruit company.
Just my 2p
I noticed Wolfson on the your spec list. This is great! Sound quality is a major factor for me, and keeps me on my Galaxy S (AT&T Captivate). With the return of Wolfson, I may be able to upgrade this summer when it comes to AT&T.

Here is my opinion. I think they both will be winner. I'm not saying that to make everybody else happy, its cause its the truth. Here are facts:
The one x is the best looking device without a shadow of a doubt. It looks sexy, the screen is amazing, it is really a great looking device. But unfortunately it has horrible battery life, screen issues, lag and stutter and sense while it looks beautiful is still a heavy skin. ( about the issues if you don't believe me go check the one x forum). Still it has great potential and WILL get lots of dev support so in a couple of months its gonna be a beast!
Now the Galaxy S3, honestly I like the design a lot. It isn't as beautiful as the one x but still , people are saying that it looks awesome in person. Then you got so many pros, exynos 4 quad on board , expandable storage, removable battery all in a device that is thinner than the one x. Anadtech and many others have reported the phone to be buttery smooth as expected. On top of that the phone should be easy to root ( no S-off bull crap required) all the new features Samsung introduced look great. Dev support is gonna be HUGE just like the one x will but with a boot loader easy to unlock. My personal choice is the S3 cause after I was blown away by the S2 , Samsung has won me over as a loyal customer. They both will b great especially when development takes off but I will give the edge to the s3 cause it is a performer!!!
We dont need another SGS3vsHTC whatever thread.
