Maybe because not everyone has a thousand dollars to splurge on a phone?
The Mini is obviously going to cost lesser than the S2, so it gives people an alternative to buying the 'Ultimate Flagship' phone.

Because not everyone want to have "laptop" in a pocket. For a primary phone which is used daily I find 4.3 screen too big. Still SGS2 or HTC Pyramid will most probably be my next phone, but before I buy it, I want to check how it goes into a pocket. My current HTC Desire have good dimensions, but is already almost one year old so I have to buy something new. If SGS2 is too big, then SGS2 Mini will be good choice. Looks like it has even faster processor (1.4 ghz).

Well looks like it's a cheaper version with a non dual core processor and a camera with lower resolution

A lot of people complain that 4.3" screen is too big, so its smart move to offer similar hardware (dualcore etc) with smaller display and smaller dimensions.
I would already pre-order Desire S if it would be dualcore.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App

galaxy S II mini has no dual core. well no one actually said what it has for real, but people are guessing its a snapdragon, overclocked msm8655 i believe. i rather wait for official samsung announcement (hoping its a hummingbird, not snapdragon, dont really care about dual core/camera)
if this costs simillar (or close enough) as xperia neo, i will get sgs II mini

LOL 3.7" a mini? ...
the engineers needs some eye check
at the very maximum 3" might be passable as mini
mini should not go beyond 2.8" in size

3.7 is the new mini! 4.0 is average, 4.3 is big, 4.5 is yummy big, and 5.0 is sleddable. Like how they secretly enlarge shirt and pants sizes as the world gets fatter.

I think everyone needs to take the "Mini" part relatively.
Compared to 4.3" a 3.7" screen is certainly the smaller brother!
I think 4.3" will get the job done for me though. (I imagine that's something "she" definitely didn't say.)

For the millionth time, the SGS2 has virtually the same dimensions as the SGS. In some dimensions it's smaller...

Because not everyone wants to have a 4.3 inch screen. Right now I have both the Nexus 1 and tthe Captivate and I love the Nexus 1 so much more.
And I love a larger screen, just for the record.
All in all, the size along with a lower price point are reasons to why there is a Mini

Ahh I see. I saw the leaked photo of the US Galaxy S2 family and while they're all nice I can't help but think the International version looks better. Plus I'm not sure whether I'd fancy the bigger screen, 4.3" seems to be the sweet spot for myself.
Here we are, with our SGSII's... as early adopters....
And now they release what it probably should have been in the first place with proper firmware probably.
Oh well, it's always the same
good bye SGS2 !
wait until they are benchmarked and the first problems arise.
I wonder if it's a Qualcomm SOC or Exynos. Exynos demolishes Qualcomm's offerings at the moment
honestly, the pace at which android phones are being upgraded is dizzying. This is one of the reasons many stick with the iphone. This is giving me crazy phone upgrade cravings :|

agreed to #15.
1) is there a need for another 0.2" of screen estate?
my take : 4.3" sgs2 is the sweet spot for me. i have trouble swiping my thumb across the whole screen already.
2) is there a need for an extra 0.3mhz of processor or 1850mah battery?
my take : setcpu is the answer.
extended battery pack aren't expensive on ebay.
My opinions
The extra processing power and screen estate will nullify the increase in capacity of batt. furthermore, the perennial dual core issue is still unfixed in 2.3.4. and samsung have the balls to release another "beta" phone.
my hunch
samsung is trying hard to best iphone5 and downplay it's "wow factor" in sept. notice the link? 4.5, dual core 1.5, it's all marketing numbers. like megapixel wars. no doubt, people will start comparing iphone 5 with 4.5" S2 in terms of raw power. that's what sammy wants.
but for what apple did, whoring over patents. go smash iphone5 to pieces man, sammy. we'll love a phone war anytime.
conclusion
4.5" S2 is a marketing gadget.
SGS2 has already covered much that we (a typical consumer) need.
If there's anything to look, go for tablets tegra kai-el releasing in a few months time.
I'm sure 4.5" S2 would look like phone drenched in cat piss in a few months time.
go for 4.5" S2 if...
you want lte.
you want nfc. ironically 4.3" S2 korea has it.
you use gadgets, not the other way around! ^^;
If they improve the sound quality and Supercurio brings voodoo to it, I'll be all over it.

Decent analysis and I think I pretty much concur. However, I don't think (and I'm not suggesting that you do either) that Samsung are doing this to piss off early adopters or force us to upgrade - they haven't even changed the name for starters, so there is no real sense of this being something new.
Marketing gimmick? Possibly, but only hardcore techies are going to be influenced by the marginal increase in specs.
So I suspect that the bits they use to make the device have moved on - if you can get a 4.5" screen at the same price as the old 4.3", why not use it...?
This is a gentle evolution in my book, not a massive statement.
If you have a GS2 there is no reason at all to go for that phone, a 4.5" screen imo will make the phone a little on the large side and this phone can be over-clocked if desired, I don't see the point of it.
What about SUPER AMOLED HD display that was talked about ??

This might be a true successor to the original Droid Incredible. Some sites are saying AMOLED, so that would be nice. I'm not a fan of SLCD. Now, if only they can do something about battery life. That's the reason I didn't go to Rezound (oh, and the fact that the phone was way too thick in the first place).
I'm really torn. I like HTC Sense (Yeah, I guess I'm in the minority) but the battery on the Razr Maxx makes me want to overlook that I am not a fan of Moto's UI as much and their screen issues. If by some miracle HTC has addressed battery size/life, I think this will be my next phone.
Looks nice and all, but I'm pretty reluctant to purchase another snapdragon phone. Sense can be cool but future-proofing is cooler. As we all know from our Adreno 200 woes, snapdragon products are not future-proof and qualcomm has made no effort to collaborate with the community to bring us updated video drivers or open source userspace drivers. I'm voting with my wallet on this one.

Here's what this phone's gotta have for me to get one: a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 chipset, an HD screen that is NOT pentile, and a battery that approaches 2000 mAh.
I would also like to be able to turn Sense off and go plain vanilla, or I'd like to use a launcher of my choice.
I've been eligible for an upgrade since January 4th. It's hard holding off until MWC and CTIA... If I don't see anything I like, it will be an LG Spectrum for me.

I only did a 1 year (remember those) upgrade when I got my Incredible.. and I got it day 1...
There has been nothing yet to want me to change to a new phone...
What I want: CDMA / GSM / LTE on 1 chip (which should be in phones by end of year - will definitely help battery life if everything was on one)... Super Amoled.... 4 inch Screen (slightly bigger than the Incredible.. but not huge like the others. I have big hands.. really big.. but its a phone.. not a tablet I want)... GREAT camera... And long battery life (hopefully fixed with my first wish)...
I'm not an Android fanboy.. or an iOS fanboy.. I just want a phone to match what I want.
Hmmm... I'll probably miss my optical track "ball". I rarely use it but comes in handy for editing.

I just want to see Verizon's line of phones for this summer so I can make an informed decision. Rumors are great but the one thing not mentioned is becoming more important, battery capacity.
Looks huge. Why have all the companies gotten caught up in a screen size pissing contest? We need another RAZR that is thin AND small. Not like the current one, which is closer to a machete than a razor.

HTC to Compete with Galaxy Note

"HTC might actually be the star of the Android show this time around though, as we have been told HTC will have a major flagship device hitting Verizon shelves in the fall. It’s said to feature a whopping 5-inch 1080p HD display (a non-PenTile screen), a new chipset that includes a quad-core Krait CPU and an Adreno 320 GPU, HTC Sense 5 and a Scribe pen. Yes, HTC is launching a Galaxy Note competitor."
http://www.bgr.com/2012/04/26/verizons-summer-fall-2012-smartphone-roadmap/
If the Scribe pen is going to be built into the Phone like it is the the S-Pen...this may be worth looking at. I would preffer a 5 inch to a 5.3 inch...that tiny bit may make the difference on making it easier to touch the Symbol switch button on the keyboard...plus a 1080p display on a 5" display!? and I though a 720p display was sweet!
I don't plan on letting my Note for a while yet, but this would be a nice piece of tech to look forward too.

Wouldn't be a huge competitor I think, at least for me. The screen would draw massive amounts of power being non-pentile for 5in. Not to mention its also a 1080p screen taking up even more battery for the GPU. So you'd need a huge battery which would make the device heavy and bulky. The krait chip is ok on power consumption, but I still think quad-core, unless there was webtop, is unnecessary. Especially since the a15 dual cores fly and have better power consumption. But then again it's a selling point to some people to have the best of the best. What I want is a Note2 with basically everything the curent has, but the
Exynos 5250 (2.0 dual core cortex a15). I'd like to see an upgraded Mali to go along with it, although they're power as it is anyways. Along with some other small things like LED notification, 12mp camera, and maybe a more accurate stylus (it can be off by 3mm sometimes for me). I would probably buy it quickly then.
Nah, I don't want LCD TFT screen after Super Amoled. Why don't use it?! Even Motorola now use Super Amoled.
Competition of 5" smartphones is a good thing.
If HTC still uses qualcomm CPU, I don't think I will move back to HTC.
I used to be HTC fanboy, really love HTC sense's integration, best proprietary Launcher/UI/framework among ALL android devices, I didn't even feel like I need to root nor change launcher when I was using HTC devices
BUT HTC really has a loose end on hardware spec. when I was going to upgrade my HTC Desire, I was choosing between HTC sensation and Samsung Galaxy SII.
Sensation was a HUGE disappointment to me, sluggish control, pitiful hardware spec as a flagship product. I ended up got the SII.
SII has superb hardware, everything was SO smooth and fast but the touchwiz is a major let down to me. I always hope one day I could use HTC sense on Samsung devices(which now I understand it will never happen)
Now I have Note, still the touchwiz is a real bugger but now I flashed ICS Stunner with Apex launcher, only thing I miss is the function S-Pen with S-memo. the rest are excellent. still not as good as SenseUI for my taste but close enough.
IF new HTC's Note competitor can have the smoothness operation like Samsung's device and retain the ability of SenseUI.
I will move back to HTC in a heartbeat.
I honestly don't like to flash rom, fix this fix that. I like good proprietary stuffs, maybe I am getting old, I don't like to geek around like I used to. I just want to have a phone that works for my taste at the first day I bought it, no mods, no flash.
sorry for the long post. Just my little thoughts
Well if the screen is S-LCD2 like the one on the One X then I'll seriously consider it..
Sense is the best UI out there, period (IMHO of course)
But I agree with @whatsaqazza, I'll take dual core A15 over quad core A9 any day, and it's obvious in One S vs One X that it has better performance and better battery life as well
Let's wait and see
Most of the high end devices are fast enough these days. I'd rather see more effort spent on power savings. I'd like to be able to beat the heck out of my device for a good 16 hours and still come home with 20% battery left. Dual core is fine.
What's up with all the "Sense UI" love? I upgraded from an iPhone to my first android phone -- an HTC Evo 4g. I absolutely loved it over the dumb iPhone. Then I upgraded to the Dell Streak 5 because I wanted a bigger phone. I later grew out of it got an HTC Inspire, once again I was a happy camper. So at that point, I decided I would never go back to another NON-HTC phone... until, my friend showed me the new Samsung Infuse 4G.. after playing with it a few mins, I was in LOVE with it! I couldn't believe what I was missing out on, the TouchWiz UI of Samsung made the Android experience even better! The next day I sold mine on craigslist and got me a brand new Infuse 4G off of ebay and have ever since become a fan of Samsung. Even today, after trying out a few Roms and custom launchers from the Market, I always end up coming back to my beloved TouchWiz UI. It is absolutely the best! I just can't stand using my phone without TouchWiz. It's that good!
I ****ing love my Note, but even I can't find a single argument in favour of tw over sense? Sense is just the most polished launcher anywhere.

I tried HTC HD2 and Wildfire about 2-3 months. Touchwiz is crap but Sense is worse, I really don't understand it and I don't like this UI style. It is almost impossible to customize. Very bad that all manufactors spit on Google offer a choice for users to choose Android stock interface or using inconvenient unpolished manufacturer UI, which add so many troubles and eat many % of battery and RAM.
Personally I hate sense. I find TouchWiz smoother, sadly. TouchWiz may lack the feature set or polish, but actual USE is smoother/quicker.
That said it is irrelevant for me until HTC switches screens. Those Pentile LCD's are just ugly IMO.

Same situation than in the ultrabook field. Yeah, there are Core i7, quad-core, 3.4 GHz parts, and GPUs with 2 GB dedicated RAM, but that on a small and thin device only means 2 hr battery life, chasis and keyboard hot as hell and noisy fan that breaks twice a year.
I keep using my Galaxy Note on power savings mode, and when I buy a new laptop, I'll make sure it has an Ivy Bridge ULV chip (17 W TDP). I do not run anything that requieres so much power and I do not like hot and noisy things on my hands for hours.
That may be OK on a gaming desktop, with plenty of fans and away from you under a desk, but not on a portable device. Look at the people complaining about the new chip on the New Ipad. Just selling GHz is not the point nowadays.
I can't believe how much people like Sense & Touchwizz.
I think that the best skin over android is Sony's. I just bought an Xperia S for my dad & absolutely love the live wallpaper, the weather widget & the overall skin on the settings list etc. Seriously, nothing else compares IMHO.
That being said, I personally never had a HTC Phone, but have played with a friend's one for a while. I felt that neither Sense nor Touchwizz was really good enough.

Bye bye dhd

Well it looks like my dhd will out of the window at the end of the month.
Was going to get the htc one x but just looked at the sg3
And hello to the Samsung Galaxy III
Just been watching the launch of it and looks nice what do you think of it guys?

Well it looks like its a step up from the DHD.
I would really go with One x, since it has 100 mhz faster CPU and has geforce instead of old Mali 400 (SGS III)
SGS3 was a disappointment for me.
-pentile screen
-still a hardware button
-seems too big
-hardware isn't that impressive compared to current smartphones
User of DHD
Hi,
I am not an expert in phones, however, using the Desire HD for the last year and a half got me to appreciate the efforts were put into it by HTC. The UI is very user friendly and I love all the aspects of the phone.
Since most of our life style and coping up with technology is now becoming expensive as there are tons of phones coming out like every month or two, one have to really evaluate the need for change. I currently have the same question that you are having, should I upgrade and to what?
Galaxy S3. Nope, I don't think so, after understanding the premium quality and feel of HTC, there is something about them that always keeps me attracted to them, not to mention how specs packed is the One X is.
Since HTC is promising ICS for my DHD and since it is in a great condition, I will wait before I upgrade to the One X. Let's see what updates we will get with the DHD.
Sorry if this reply is too long. Just thought it will help.
I wouldn't buy the sg III just because of the pentile screen. Also i think that the back cover looks way too cheap.

That seems to be the only positive point in SGS III compared to htc one x
EDIT: After reading this i would change my statement above and go on saying that this article states that the CPU used in SGS III is actually faster than tegra 3 but despite the fact that it is using the old MALI 400, overall it puts itself below HTC One x. But i don't think you'll be disappointed by both of the phones so now the choice is upto you.

The SGS III really looks nice. But there are some problems for me.
-Bloated and (imho) ugly software, with sooo many stuff that i will never use.
-Screen may be too big. I already had the One X in my hands and i'm not sure i could live with it. I have medium size hands but certain actions just arent comfortable..
One X has the same screen size probem, less not exchangable battery and only 32gb memory (i need more).
Soo i have an update in September but i really wouldnt know what to get at this point... I think the Huawei Ascend D quad XL looks veeery promising. Vanilla ICS, huge battery, 4.5", but its the first superphone from them soo... Its really not that easy atm imho. 6 months ago i would have said SGS II all the way.

Finally the Arc is gone

After almost a year of ownership I've decided to upgrade the Arc to the only other phone with a form factor and feel I like, the HTC one S.
I really wanted to love my Arc (lt15) but I was constantly battling with lag, battery life, and storage space etc. Trying new rom after new rom helped fix this to some degree but it was never perfect.
The One S is slim, has an awesome finish, a beautiful screen and camera and I'm sitting here 16 hours later with 50% battery left.
So, thank you to the Arc for being a great phone but onwards and upwards to the One S.

there not bad but so flimsy the missis had hers for less than 2 days she dropped it while knelt down from her trouser pocket and the outer screen shattered bare in mind the missus is only 5"5 so knelt down the fone only fell like a foot at the most althow its never a good idea to drop ur fone at least with the arcs sturdyness it would have take that fall a hundred times over and laughed back
Do you like Sense, or do you think the Xperia UXP was better?
and besides isnt the htc running 4.0.3 that would be a step down software wise wouldnt it =)
I actually like Sense a lot more than the Sony UI, HTC have really done the new implementation well but as with everything, if you don't like it you can just remove it, in my case i've kept it.
As for sturdiness, well I am prone to dropping my phone and the Arc took quite a beating, lets home my One S doesn't suffer if/when I drop it.
well best of luck to u m8 my partners screen didnt, only guna cost like £40 to repair it but still alot for a 2 day old fone oh and fyi hers was the htc one X sorry not the S
I'm also thinking about upgrading to the One S. Are you content with the upgrade? Personally I'd have to pay 200$ for the upgrade - do you think that it's worth it? Is it anything that you miss about the arc having your One S for a few days now?
Xperia S it better option as compare to One S
i read all the specs of one S
it has only 16 GB internal memory with no memory card slot 8 MP camera and no HDMI port , also the 256 ppi pixel density
Xperia S is better then this specs

And then you miss out the serious specs like the 'Xperia S' running an older Qualcomm S3 where as the One S has the S4 chip set...Makes a large difference.

Other countries' HTC One S is sporting the Qualcomm S3 dual core SoC.
Taiwan is one for example, it is clocked at 1.7GHz.

So Xperia S is at advantage when compared to the HTC One S S3 variant, with higher ppi and slightly larger screen to name a few.
The problem with One S is the pentile matrix on a relatively low ppi screen and the camera which using gsmarena compare picture quality tool seems to be worse than the one on the Arc. Those are the only 2 reasons why I'm still not upgrading. I don't know about real life performance difference too, I'd like the person who switched to compare, because I'm curious.
On one hand in benchmarks the S4 is a king of mobile processors at the moment offering like a dozen times faster float point processing but is it really that noticeable? Arc is relatively smooth in all it does. And that appears to be the biggest difference between those 2 phones, except of the price. I'm not sure if it's worth the price difference.
One S with Dual core Krait processor is the beast of the phones! Even beats the quad one x. Tegra 3 is just good for games only. Krait outshines tegra3 in the rest!!!
I played with an Xperia P today and it's beautiful. I actually prefer it over the Xperia S. I might have to sell my arc S and get one.

I actually just ordered the SG Note i717. I was going to go with the One s, but i didn't like how it doesn't have an external car slot. I like the idea of having all that memory on your phone, but wtf, we can't have an external card too. ppfffft that. So I decided on the note. The big ass screen will help with everything I have to do online for school, plus it can take a microsd so I'm happy, just waiting for it to get here is the dragger. I know it still has the S3 processor but the only difference noticebly is heavy heavy use or camera snap time between them, of course the S4 is faster. The next one will be as well and so on so forth. On the other hand I still can't complain about my Arc S. It's has been quite the champ after all said n done now I get like 24-50 hours battery life, just accessing my school online with zooming n unzooming all the time is annoying as hell. I might sell my arc s or just use it to, how did my roommate put it, "technologically rape" it.
