Hi guys,
I'm looking for a method to get a Linux Distribution like Ubuntu or Debian runnig on my Advent Vega or HTC Desire. Both devices do not support the chroot-command which is required in the tutorials out there because the system is something like virtualized.
There might could be a tutorial that shows me how to fastboot into that Linux on an ext-Partition or somewhere. I hadn't found it yet but you may know it better than me.

No it isn't. Just how to completeley install it instead of android. Not like it was possible on the G1 :/
i doubt that's possible we can't even run two roms with backing up and restoring. Your best shot is probably a vm style app
No that works. You are emulating the distribution. that's what you can do with chroot. It worked on the Google G1 aka HTC Dream. I had that and I tried that. But with the Vega it does not because of chroot

You have an option to use the official recovery mode or you can install CWM.

For anyone still following this thread, I should point out that it's quite possible to run a chrooted vm on the vega. I simply followed the instructions in the thread on MoDaCo on this topic.

I spent a lot of time trying it out, with no success. Then I noticed that one of the error messages in the terminal said something like "busybox - unknown option". So I updated my Busybox to the latest version and then the startup script ran with no problems.

Nice one dude. What sort of interface did u use to interact with the OS? Was it a touch interface or did u use a keyboard and mouse. Also, was it possible you output the screen to a monitor

Im kind of new to this. Iv'e created some apps succesfully in Eclipse and stuff like that.
But, I like to start with ROM development. I have no idea where to start! Would be really nice if someone could tell me how to start with creating/porting a ROM.
Iv'e read that you need to have Linux Ubuntu, is that true?
So Iv'e almost installed Ubuntu now on a Virtual machine, downloading HTC Android Kitchen. Am I doing right?

As far as I know I don't think you need Ubuntu, but you've probably figured that out by now It should work for windows and mac too, although it looks like ubuntu is the only linux-based distribution it works on..
And I'm curious, How is the rom-making going?
I wouldn't recommend flashing roms using a virtual machine... a screwup in the vm might make your test phone a 600 dollar paperweight... check out wubi... actual partitioned ubuntu installer that when unstalled defaults back to the windows bootloader...so you don't have to screw with lilo or grub...oh also leaves windows as the default OS...so you don't accidentally boot into ubuntu after every reboot

Ubuntu is perfect for ROM development/porting. A virtual machine is perfectly fine to dev on. But you will need at least a 12gb virtual disk though. These sites should get you up and running

I already got everything set up on windows.
HTC android ROM kitchen, SDK manager and eclipse.
I dont really know where to start. Ive just created a simple ROM using the shipped RUU, added like apps2sd, root and that stuff. Also edited like status-bar background in framework-res.apk and stuff like that.
Id like to go in abit more deeper, whats next?

I am attempting to try this on the Gtablet, im having issues and was hoping more people could mess around with it.
Isn't this more of a VM-type setup? I wonder if things like your /sdcard are even accessible this way, and audio, etc.
Still.....downloading it, anyway. 1 hour to go. :O
dont know if its any faster but I DL it from Demonoid, thats where i saw it then it had a link to that site for help installing

It's using vnc slit will be slow.
I just hope it support portable harddisk for me transferring the files from CF card reader to harddisk
Ubuntu on the gtab will be possible once we have the kernel source as the binary kernel we currently have is, ah, not set up very well to run Ubuntu. Anyway, I've already messed with a similar type of Ubuntu root on my Evo. Its not hard....
Additional information that we may need to look at for getting a regular kernel to work...

Is anyone here running ubuntu on here vega? I have seen a monster topic at modaco but its difficult to work out exactly how the install is running and a decent howto guide, this forum has always had better write ups so i was hoping someone could help me.
Also, is it possible to dual boot android from the nand and ubuntu from the sdcard? That would really bring my vega to life , especially due to the lack of open office supoort in android at the moment.

Indeed someone is working on this at modaco. Unfortunately, nvidia has not released updated display drivers making ubuntu and meego very slow. Don't think it's usable right now.
I have looked over the thread at modaco, it is on my list of things to do to work on Ubuntu for the vega based on the work on the modaco thread and the htc-linux site and the stuff I have done on my HD2.
I have only just got my vega and the rushed install I did from the modaco thread didnt work, but I tried something a little funky to get it closer to what I want.
Have you tried the instructions on the first post? One of the modaco members has put up basic bulid which needs to be unzipped to the second partition on the sd card, which needs to be formatted as ext3. Then the boot partition needs to be flashed to boot into ubuntu, there is no workable dual boot options as there is no custom bootloaders.

Shame, i think the best compromise of a tablet setup would be android 3.0 with a shortcut to launch ubuntu from within android. At least then we could actually do some real work on the tablet, sadly android really is lagging too far with office software (and open office support is a joke!)

Yes, but the kernel is similar (Android just misses out ALSA support). Java just provides the UI.

You must acknowledge that "Ubuntu Mobile" is for "x86" CPUs, "Ubuntu Touch" is for "ARM" CPUs.

Yes, currently, Ubuntu Touch is using the base android.
It uses its HAL, and dalvik VM, etc are not needed.
Ubuntu Touch is supposed to run on CM10.1, and currently, i found a source of CM10.1 for HTC HD2.
Compilation is still in progress, i met lots of errors, but lets hope we will success

2013-03-11: This log has been created.
2013-03-17: After lots of tries and debugging, CM10.1 has been successfully compiled. No BCMDHD support. I'll try to port it to ubuntu tonight or tomorrow.
2013-03-22: Way to achieve ubuntu on the htc hd2 has been found. Due to my school tests start from today, development will be slow/suspended for about a week.
2013-03-24: Base android has been successfully ported into the HD2, although it is a bit slow/buggy, it is still acceptable.
2013-03-24: UbuntuTouch rootfs OK! No gui yet, need sometime for debugging.
2013-04-03: I just figured out that everything i done was wrong, i should use my custom android-init instead of the old init, debugging for the new init.

Hey guys , ive been searching for days but cant seem to find a guide or download for this anyewhere , was wondering is it possible to boot ubuntu natively on our tegra note 7 ? ive already tried and suceeded in running ubuntu in android using the chroot method but i want to know is it possible to boot straight to / dualboot ubuntu ?

I take it you mean Ubuntu in its direct form like the standard Desktop OS ?
If so there is a arm version of Ubuntu Server 14.04 coming out soon but thats a ARMv8 only. Now heres the catch our Tegra Note 7 is based on a Coretx A15 SOC which is ARMv7.
Now the only version of Ubuntu i know that was ported to ARMv7 was Ubuntu 12.04.
There was a Tegra 2 Version of this which you can read about here : https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ARM/TEGRA/AC100
So its possible, however as of yet the only other option would be Ubuntu Touch but thats not a native ubuntu.

Yes i will make a thread , unfortuneatly i have not tested any applications on it as of yet , i should have the thread ready by sometime tomorrow

I can at least vouch that the Tegra 2 version of Ubuntu worked on my Acer A500. If you can live with the basics, it's cool, but the amount of software available for ARM is minimal. It's also very unfriendly to touch, so you'll need a mouse. I personally can't think of anything I was able to do with it that I wasn't already able to do more easily with Android, so eventually I took it off.
