[REQUEST] A forum section for Acer Iconia A500 & A100 Honeycomb tablets - Acer Iconia A500

I'd like to request a section for both of these models. Per below, they should be appearing shortly (along with the rest of the HC tablet deluge). Thanks for the consideration.

I have to throw in my support on this.
I am eagerly awaiting the Iconia A500 as it will probably be the first Honeycomb tablet in Norway.
Supposedly set for release April 8 in the UK, and hopefully here aswell.

Would be good to have a section for the A500!
Had planned to get a Notion Ink Adam but after seeing all of the issues coming from the pre-orders I've looked elsewhere and the Acer A500 is the one I'll be going for.
Would be great to have the backing of this forum for what should be an outstanding tablet!

even im using u20i but im agree with u..

+1 on this,
just pre ordered from bestbuy, was going for notion ink but coin flip decided for me-Just too hard of a decision.

Oh **** yeah, this looks great.
Awesomo.
But its a windows tablet, I don't know if they'll make a section for it.

a500 and a100 are android tablets, not windows

Yep just found that out,
What I first found on youtube was the iconia dual screen notebook with windows.

+1 here, just bought an Acer Iconia A500 today at a computer show in Taiwan, after 30mins I'm in love with this tablet, much better than my other Viewsonic Gtab. Can't wait to root and mod this puppy

Apparently Packard Bell is going to make a tablet that is almost an exact copy of the Iconia A500; http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/09/packard-bell-debuts-liberty-tab-honeycomb-tablet/
So perhaps these two should share forums, hopefully this will lead to a bigger modding-community.
I just want to add that my reason for choosing the Iconia over the ASUS Transformer is that you don't have to connect a (big) docking station in order to connect usb-devices.

I hope there will be an adapter for USB for Asus Tranformer so you wouldn't need dock for connecting pendrives and such. The dock is probably just an USB device (a hub with keyboard working additionaly as USB charger). But it could take time before it is sold and it could never be available.

Perhaps that will be available after a while, the bottom isn't the best place to have a USB plug though.
Also, I love the design of the Iconia A500, Transformer looks like it has pretty sharp edges. Might make it uncomfortable to hold.

Just pre-ordered one (Acer A500) from BestBuy. Thanks!

Im going to buy this tablet too and sell my archos 101.

The Iconia A500 is the only tab that interests me and it's going to be very hot!!

+1, it's in my hands right now, fantastic tablet!

I'm really envious!
I've also noticed that Amazon.co.uk has pushed the release date forward to May 1.
Will there ever be released a Honeycomb device in Europe?

Tranformer with dock has been pushed too (1th June). I wonder if it's only Amazon? Or other shops will push the dates too?

Acer Iconia a500
I would like to see a forum for this tablet also, thanks

[Q] Samsung vs

Hey guys.. im just a lil curious. I currently have a acer a500 and im kinda annoyed with acer support. When got me looking into returning it for an asus eee transformer, until I saw that this was released! Im im sure you guys are a little biased, but if you could have your choice of any pad would you buy the samsung again? my concern is mostly devs.... not a lot going on for the acer imo.

The choice is yours. If you want expandable storage, HDMI out, and save 100 bucks out of the box go with transformer. If you want a polished device all around, nice screen and have cash to burn on the things mentioned above - go with Samsung.

yeah the apparent lack of dev support and locked bootloader (at the time) is why I returned my A500. Decided there really wasn't much I really needed all those ports for personally. Tried to test drive a TF at Fry's but the touchscreen wouldn't respond even after i rebooted. When I pointed it out to sales guy he said that was the 2nd display that stopped working which I took as a bad sign. So far pretty happy with my decision because the GT is much easier to handle and I've seen quite a few familiar names dev-wise showing up here.

ya ive heard the TF flexes alot.... is the GT more solid feeling? thanks for the reply pretty much exactly what i was thinking and looking to confirm . as long as the 30pin samsung port works with 3g dongles and keyboards im happy!
I had the acer for a couple weeks, then this tab came out and I returned the acer. To me it was more about DEV, I figured we would see custom ROMs faster on theGalaxy.
Thee device itself is much lighter, faster, and I didnt use any of the ports.
I actually had to return two of the acers cause they just kept force closing an the hardware/build was sketchy.
I am totally happy with the tab

Is it more solid....if you mean does any part of it feel like it will come loose or feel cheap then no it just feels lighter than the A500 and Xoom. It seemed like people making an argument for the Xoom always equated its weight with a solid feel which I didn't understand. The A500 felt lighter but also felt more solid than the Xoom IMO.

How is the "bloatware" content and ease of rooting? I had an Iconia 500 (returned 'cause I was a little afraid of ****ty Acer support and lack of dev support) but the Acer had a minimum of bloat and root was dead easy.

There are only two apps from Samsung prepossessing, a music market app (Music Hub) and Samsung's own market app. Rooting isn't one click or accomplished via an apk like Gingerbreak on the Acer (which I think I read doesn't even work on the 3.1 update). If you have a little experience with ADB and using a command prompt you prob won't find it difficult to root. The only issue I had was getting the Samsung drivers installed but that was more of an annoyance than anything else. The instructions are really pretty straightforward. I think someone is working on a script to run the root commands but I haven't seen it yet.

returned my acer and got a samsung 16gig 10.1 today... little sad that my bootloader is locked but eah im sure with time this will get fixed. my acer was faster and no lag like my samsung does, but the samsung has more potential imo.
As an owner of both the Transformer and the Galaxy Tab 10.1 at the moment (will return one soon), I can give you some unbiased advice.
The Galaxy Tab is definitely the better tablet, as is. Meaning if you're not looking to spend any more money after you've paid for the tablet, you'll get the better tablet with the Galaxy Tab (of course, it's $100 more). The build quality is superior. It's thinner/light etc.
However, if you're looking for a tablet with more hardware features, then the Asus Transformer is obviously the clear winner.
The only concern I have with the Galaxy Tab is support from Samsung. Asus have been nothing but awesome. 3.1 firmware 3 weeks after announcement then kernel source shortly after. The Galaxy Tab came out with 3.1 so no idea how it will turn out... I haven't had a chance to own any Samsung phone but I've heard horror stories regarding Samsung's support. But I'm sure we'll have xda's excellent communities to help out with either tablet.

Hi!

Hi everyone,
I just got my Iconia A500 last night and so far I'm loving it!
I have a Dell Streak 5 as my "always with me device" and I previously had a ViewSonic gTablet, just to try the 10" form factor, but despite an active dev community, the gTab is plagued by software limitations. I was tired of hombrew ROMs that didn't work quite right.
So I spent the last few weeks combing the forums and comparison shopping to find the right tablet for me. LG Optimus Pad (G-Slate), Moto Xoom, Iconia and Eee Pad transformer were all in the running. After more hours than I like to think about, I settled on the A500.
It was the haptic feedback that put it past the Transformer for me.
Out of the box it's running Netflix, Plants vs. Zombies HD and everything else I need!
So happy! Now all I've got to do is grab the Huawei 3G drivers and I'm all set!

If you don't mind, i'll jump on to your thread as well. I was going to make one, but thought it might just be clutter =p.
Hello everyone, I got my new A500 earlier today! I look forward to being a part of this community. Once I get familiar with the device, I will probably hang around the general/Q&A sections of the forum. I couldn't believe how simple it was to root the device, have to give some koodos to Acer in that regard.
Like the OP, I was shopping around and had the Iconia, Xoom and Transformer in the running with the Iconia winning. I just plain didn't like the Xoom, but it was an Android device so it was considered. Contemplated the Transformer, but in visiting their forums, there seemed to be alot of problems with it. So Iconia it was, and the price was right as well!
I really wanted the HTC Flyer, but they don't have root yet and it's not officially available up in the north here =(. Would have been a fine collection to my HTC family, but alas it was not meant to be. I do like this Iconia though!

Looking to buy a new tablet. Iconia A500 or Eee pad Transformer

Narrowed down to these two options. Not really interested in Transformer Prime at the moment.
Read similar thread at A500 general forums and just want some opinions here, too!
Thanks!
you may get biased views here, but I just picked up the original transformer. The option of the dock is a big plus, even if you think you don't need it.
So far, it appears that Asus has been very good about updates and fixing issues that people have seen. From what I've seen, there have been more updates on the transformer than any other tablet.
The promise of ice cream sandwich seems real. Unlike other tablets, Asus seems to want to keep tablets up to date. I also have the original samsung galaxy tablet (7 inch) and updates have been rare and a long time between them. 2 updates in over a year and the rumour is they may not support ICS.

I have both Acer and Asus
Make it short get an Asus, root it and use custom ROM
biggest disadvantage of Asus and Acer is the charger I have know idea what engineers were thinking, even cell phone manufacturers (except Apple) start using micro USB for charge and data sync and 3.5mm jack for headphones, before that it was a nightmare.
Did you look at XooM 32Gb?

Thanks for the post. XOOM 32GB is more expensive. And this is my first Tablet so I am trying to not invest too much this time.
I do agree with the charge and 3.5mm jack. But it seems pretty difficult to find a car charger for transformer? I've read the devcake charger thread and got an impression that there is no car product support 12V?
I just went through exactly the same thing. I think the build quality and connectivity of the a500 are better. GPS doesn't work very well on the Acer (was the deal breaker for me). now that I have the asus rooted and running revolver and blade3, this thing is awesome! I'm sure there are awesome ROMs out there for the a500 as well but can only speak for the asus. I think the screen does make a difference as well. many people have said that the screens are very close... I agree, but after spending an extensive amount of time on the asus I think the ips screen is a much better choice. Very easy on the eyes. the screen is also calibrated note neutrally (IMO coming from photography experience). my first choice was the iconia but after getting this I'd say that I'm very happy with the final decision. I wanted a device where everything works and this tablet does that, and very well!
Check the build got the says as well. I got lucky and picked up a b80 and many of the bugs seem to be fixed from earlier versions from what I've read...
I think overall in my experience, ASUS makes a far superior product over Acer. I've been in the IT industry for over 12+ years and that's what I have seen, from desktops, notebooks, monitors etc.

Car charger:
As it looks like there are no dedicated car chargers for the Transformer (Then I don't expect there is something for the A500 either) my first thought was to use a standard USB adapter and the Transformer's USB cable. But the Transformer doesn't charge properly via USB because it needs more power than a standard USB port delivers. But there is another device with the same problem: The iPad.
So although i haven't ttried it, it might work to use one of the USB car chargers for the iPad and plug in the USB cable of the Transformer.
-----
TF101 vs A500:
I am absolutely pleased with my Transformer (16GB WIFI, no dock because it was cheaper ). The software between the two doesn't differ very much (but Asus includes some nice applications, e.g. full Polaris Office (don't know what the A500 has instead), the community is bigger for the Transformer I think (can always be helpful) and Asus is the Tablet manufacturer with the fastest updates.
In terms of hardware both are very similar as well (if you don't count the dock as a big advantage of the TF101) but there is one little thing of the Iconia Tab I wished I had in my Transfomer: the full USB2.0 Host directly on the tablet (for plugging in Keyboards, USB sticks etc). Because on my dock-less Transformer I use the flimsy Asus Adapter that gives me a normal USB port, but it works ok.
[typed with my Transformer and a wireless Logitech keyboard attached].
Hope it was helpful,
have a nice 2012!
Biased view? - Definately - Go for the Asus Transformer (WITH KEYBOARD DOCK) - Simple choice.
The acer a500 has a major bug, it thinks your in another country and won't let you download apps from the market! It can be solved by rooting but what if you don't want to root?
This is not a rumor or hearsay a friend of mine has an a500 and can't download anything. It thinks she lives in some middle Eastern country when she actually lives in the US. She does not want to root it so she is screwed. I have tried every "fix" I can find online and none of them work.
I had the Acer. I sold it...and almost regret it.
Acer is easier to root and rom development is great.
Asus' position against root. if I had know it, would had been enough to stay away from it.
Techs are similar, only the form factor is a + for the Transformer.
my 2 cents
I've had the Acer and now I have the Transformer. I love my Transformer, but I would go with the Acer. The only thing I like better about the Transformer over the Acer is the look and weight. The Iconia can get heavy at times, but you get usb ports "on the tablet" and it doesn't require you to use any proprietary cables. Just use a usb cable that you may already have laying around. (This is coming from someone who doesn't have or has never used the dock with the Transformer, so my opinion might be different if that was the case. But I would have to go out and spend $150 to find that out.) You don't have to worry about what model number you have, which determines what root method you use, etc. But at the end of the day, I don't think you can go wrong with either choice. It's just a matter of personal preference.
TF101
Better Build Quality
BEST screen in class (better than A500, XOOM, Sony, Samsung, iPad)
Least buggy - ASUS really address **** pretty promptly by comparison with other - very much the continual improvement ethic
Best Detachable keyboard engineering
We have Roach as Dev who is working on CM9 - testament to his class.
SUPPORT FOR VOODOO SOUND - PRICELESS

Asus Transformer + dockstation, incredible battery life.
Buy ASUS Transformer Prime because it is newer and more efficient.
After reading all the "biased" opinion threads in both forums and had some hands-on time for both devices, I think will be getting TF101.
The Prime is out of my budget and I don't need that much power yet.
Just got the asus and another member of the family got the acer iconia... transformer runs a lot smoother and (i think) comes with better preloaded apps. Looking around to see options for rooting/romming them both today

I've seen your thread. I don't need the dock.
And I don't think you will want to sell the pad only.

Next best option to a500??

This is probably the wrong place to ask since most people have the a500, but what would you buy if it was for the a500? I think I might give up on the a500. I love it for the hardware you get for the money, but this wifi issue is killing me.
The wifi strength (or lack thereof) is ridiculous. I am sitting like 10 feet in front of my access point and it gets 25db less than my phone does in the same spot. My wife keeps bugging me to get the ipad and I really hate to even think about it, but I am not sure what else to do. The tablet is useless if it can't pick up wifi. I have until Feb 22nd to return it.
Thoughts?
Wifi issue? I guess I haven't read into the forums too much, since I just got mine a couple weeks ago, but I know my connection is nice and strong.
If I didn't get the a500, my other two choices would've been the Toshiba Thrive, or the Asus Transformer. I was leaning more towards the a500 or Thrive though, due to the full USB port.

I think it is pretty widely known that the signal strength in the a500 is poor at best. There is even a thread in this section about modifying it with a new antenna to try and help. 25dB difference in signal strength is HUGE, my phone should not be that much better than the a500.
I love the A500, I would have got the 32GB internal (but i got great deal of 16gb for $300 on Black Friday) I Herd of 8GB going for $229 about 4 weeks ago (can't argu with price) especially when you can buy a 32Gb SDCard and tweak it into internal memory (from another xda thread)
MAIN Reason why I bought mine was Real USB port, i liked ASUS (but no USB port turned me off) I read many reviews and after owning, wouldn't change a thing. Currently $349 for 16gb and $399 for 32GB. I'd buy the 32GB if i had a choice.
I don't ever have probs with Wi-fi at home, or Finding a hotspot on the road from my Rooted Phone.
maybe if you have the 16GB model, turn it in for 32GB version before January 22, and get another 15 or 30 days to make your best decision. (if you feel pressured)
just my opinion. GL
I had an Asus Transformer, they are nice tablets and you can get a dongle which plugs to the proprietary docking port to give you USB. I sold mine because I got such of waiting for someone to root the newer firmware. Four months on and it still doesn't seem to have happened. If you hunt around and make sure you get serial number b60 and below root is straightforward.
If you don't care about root you can obviously buy anything.

My second choice was the galaxy tab, but I preferred the feel of the a500.
I have no issue with wifi. Signal is good and strong all over my house. And even outside the house
Sent from my SO-01C using XDA App
Next best choice, a701.
Wifi has worked remarkably well. Internal 3g is solid. Probably the most all around tab.
And these tabs can take some abuse. 350+ flashings, patches, update flashes, testings. And yet, not once has it ever done anything worse than a common bootloop during testing.
Several times every day, -10c to +25, and immediately it turns on. Who can ask for more.
I wonder, can the others live up to that?
Mine would of been the Transformer, because it was the only tab i had close to me in the the same price range. I would also like something with 3g, but my phone has a WiFi hotspot so that isn't a problem anymore.
My WiFi works fine, maybe its an issue on some models and not all. I've never had a problem with my Acer ( i don't use it that much because my desktop is right in front of me.)
One has to love the full size USB.
And always, the cost to performance ratio.
$395 for a501. $350 for a500.
The 501 is my primary office machine right now. 85%
I have had every tab except the Samsung 10.1 8.9 and Sony S because lack of HDMI or SD card. I don't think the USB is a real deal breaker unless you use it daily or even weekly. We use it to transfer work files 1 time per month, but could easily plug the iconia into the computer instead of the USB to get the files we need. Or if you use wireless keyboard mouse that uses a dongle then the USB is useful. So with that said I would easily go for a tab that gets timely updates, unlocked, with a huge developer community. So XOOM, Xoom Family Edition (not unlocked but will get timely updates), Transformer (updated all the time Asus is standing behind its movement), Transformer Prime (will be relevant for awhile), Samsung 8.9 and 10.1 (awesome development community but lacks the ports we are used to), Archos 8 ( great hardware and media). No Thrive because its dead, big , and ugly.

Or you could buy an iPad. Everything you could ever imagine, all in one extremely thin.... display. Never worry about anything. Take what is given. Expect nothing.
Asus support, well, given their latest offering already fubarred from the start (TRNSFR P). Samsung,,, another situation in itself. Nothing like using extra apps to do what one app could've done. And like you said, NOBODY wants to port a Samsung....
Thanks for the input. I wouldn't be opposed trying another a500 but unfortunately where I got it they don't carry it anymore. Decisions, decisions.....

Throw that Iconia in the garbage. And jump right on that 3,4, or 5, 6 or 7pad.
Just don't come back here. You will get no symphathy.
Sorry, we are a little territorial.
I would really like to avoid going the iPad route because I really do think it is a waste of money compared to what else is out there in the android world. I got the a500 at a steal of a price too because of a price mistake on Thanksgiving so I would hate to have to give this up, but the poor wifi is REALLY bothering me. When I go to my in-laws, I can barely use the tablet because it doesn't get signal most places in their small home.
At the time that I bought the A500, I was choosing between it and a refurbed original iPad. Since I had an Android phone, I really wanted an Android tablet, but I really didn't like any other Android tablet out at the time. After buying my kids Nook Colors for Christmas, I probably would've added the Nook Color to my decision making process if I had known more about it back then, but although the Nook Color makes a great, inexpensive tablet solution, it doesn't really compare to the A500.
I had significant problems getting my oldest son's original iPad connected to my home network -- EVERYTHING else connects to it just fine, and I'm a career network engineer (retired) so I'm not exactly stupid on the subject. All the "tech" advice I got from Apple zealots was that I needed to get a genuine Apple branded router to solve the problem (NOT in this house, baby!). I even had a few problems getting the daughter's new iPad2 connected. In other words, your wifi problems aren't going to necessarily go away by going iPad -- they may actually get worse.
All that being said, I'm simply not seeing a wifi problem with my A500. The only thing I've noticed is that with the HC 3.2.1 update, wifi seems to give up quicker when nothing is in range, but I'm looking at that as a battery saving feature rather than a problem. Prior versions of HC would always continue to hammer the wifi radio looking for an AP, significantly draining the battery. I've discussed this elsewhere in other threads, and it would seem that A500 owners are each getting rather different experiences with wifi. I think we're looking at a hardware variance here (both internal to the A500 as well as network hardware each owner is using).
id hold out for tegra 3 its on the horizon and yeah

Thanks for the input. I wouldn't be opposed trying another a500 but unfortunately where I got it they don't carry it anymore. Decisions, decisions.....

Watch this (it's a YouTube video on the A500 wifi capabilities)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLNTCU90kkE&feature=player_embedded
And try flashing this wifi fix in CWM.
Some have had success with it!

That is interesting to see. Mine definitely does not do that. I use wifi analyzer to determine my signal strength as well, not the bars. The a500 gets 25dB less signal strength than my phone in the same exact spot.
As far as the fix goes, I didn't think that fix had anything to do with signal strength, I thought it was about actual connection issues? I am not rooted either, so I don't have CWM installed anyway.

A200 Gets ICS

So is it only a matter of time before we get it?
http://www.netbooknews.com/44849/ac...campaign=Feed:+netbooknews/nbn+(Netbook+News)
Hm, now that's interesting. I guess we can more-or-less grab the A200 ICS ROM and slap it on A500. Camera likely won't work, but everything else should. Not bad news, not at all.
ICS on A200 Experience
I was over at the STAPLES store on 2/9/2012. They had the A200 on display which had ICS. I played with it for around 5 minutes and it was smoother than my current A500 with stock Honeycomb. It was fast in normal usage and browsing like my HP Touchpad with CM9. The feather I liked on the A200 was the added rotary GUI. By pressing the round button/dot at the lower middle of the screen, a rotary dial pops up allowing you to control volume, settings, and programs. I can't wait until we get ICS on the A500.

even if/when we get it, dont expect the ring. thats part of the a200 3.2.1 rom as well, and the a500 doesnt have that. they have it to make up for the lack of dolby mobile, rear camera and docking port (possibly hdmi out as well, i cant remember).
To me this shows how acer feels about there existing customers. I am leaning toword the a500 might not get the update. The a500 should have been first . But of course because its been replaces financially its better for acer to take money from new customers instead of Supporting the existing and NOW QUITE FURIOUS Ones.. They will not REMAIN NUMBER TWO IN SALES FOR LING WITH THIS TYPE OF Business..
Acer should call HP TECH SUPPORT AND GET A UNDERSTANDING HOW CUSTOMERS SHOULD BE Treated.. other then i do not agree with the whole hp web os pad drop decisions.

I would imagine that Acer, like any other company, is in business to make money. It makes good business sense to upgrade current models before older ones. The update will help it compete with the xooms and transformers out there on the same shelves. I wouldn't say this automatically rules out an update for our A500s. The A200 seems to have slightly simpler hardware as well, so less work in making the update, less bugs to QC before public release, etc. I would give it another few months before unleashing the Hulk rage. My SGSII and my Tab 7.7 are still waiting also and Samsung has a bit more muscle to develop with. All good things to those who wait.... (I hope)
I have seen my fair share of these threads pop up all over xda within the areas I frequent, I seen it with the captivate and att with the gingerbread update, I seen it with the the locked down boot loaders on the evo 4g. Yes good things do happen to those who wait, I believe that there was an article with an official statement from an Acer rep that Yes ICS will be pushed out to the A500 and that other smaller tablet but it will happen most likely after the newer devices have been updated. And if Acer doesn't put it out then there will most likely be a developer come along that will be able to build it for the A200
Haven't yet seen the update on my A200, and system update isn't showing it.

As always, these updates are released cyclically, one area gets it first, the next a few days later and so on. Could take up to 2 weeks for your area to get it.

KJY posted a link to the A200 ICS stock ROM in the dev section a while back. He warned against trying to flash it on an A500. I would think the hardware is pretty similar. I'd at least open it up and remove the recovery and update bits.

That's what I thought too, both are after all Tegra2 with the same resolution and all. One thing that could cause issues is if they have different partition layout, but I don't see why Acer would've messed with that without a reason.
The main difference is the lack of the rear camera, and I assume the 2MP front-facing one is different from the one in A500.
Since the A500 is no longer available in many stores, makes sense to be selling current models with the latest Android version otherwise punters will go with a "more up to date" tablet from a competitor. We will get the update next, and quite probably sooner rather than later.
