On March 5th, we reported that Federal Magistrate Joseph Spero officially authorized Sony to subpoena Geohot's web provider to secure the official log of IP addresses that visited GeoHot.com between January 2009 and early 2011. In addition to Sony being given access to this information, the PS3 maker is about to delve even deeper into Geohot's personal records. This week Sony was also granted access rights to all of Geohot's PayPal records for 2009, 2010, and even January of 2011.
The reason Sony was given access to Geohot's personal PayPal log is the same reason the company was similarly handed all of the other data it requested. According to Sony, the information will help determine whether the company should sue George "Geohot" Hotz in New Jersey or San Francisco. NJ is Geohot's home state, but San Francisco is where his jailbreak files were allegedly most downloaded (plus, San Francisco is also close to Sony headquarters and a trial close to home would be nice).
If you're scratching your head on this one, you're not alone. After all, Sony is looking into more than 24 months of PayPal records even though the primary hack they're upset about is only a few months old. Nonetheless, even on the heels of Sony's latest over-the-top effort to publicly embarrass Geohot in front of the entire jailbreaking community, few are expressing outrage over Sony's ability to acquire this relatively sensitive information all for the sake of "making an example" out of a lone 21-year-old hacker.

All I know is that the hacks he apparently opened the gates for have ruined games like Modern Warfare 2 for me.. they have killed some games and I don't agree with that at all. I don't support anyone who made hacking the online play of the ps3 possible.
Rooting my phone is much different because I am not ruining the user experience for countless other people, when you hack and cheat ps3 games online.. you are.

I dont believe he necessarily opened up hacks in games. He's known for jailbreaking the ps3 so u can burn games and make your console backwards compatible with ps and ps2 games, and also jailbreaking the iphone/ipod. If you buy something, ITS YOURS! Do what you want with the damn thing, void the warranty, explore options. Why get sued for doing what you want to do with your item?

Sure you should be able to do what you want with your ps3, but only if it doesn't affect others. aka hacks in game which arent possible without a jail broken counsel if i understand it correctly.

I didn't know that was possible. How can you hack online play to benefit the gamer?
Edit: Let me rephrase that. Not how do I hack it in the sense of I want to do it, but what benefits or advantages can you get from this? I thought it was just to burn games and for reverse compatibility with older PS games.

From the link you posted.
"Geohot's hack just allowed a bypass of the system to stop checking for official Sony signed programs which allows you to fully use the system to run your own code and such which really opens the door to homebrew applications."
He may or may not have wrote any hacks or cheats, who knows. He did make it possible for others to do it for the sake of "homebrew" apps.
The problem with your argument of "it's yours do what you want" is this... Your ps3 is yours and you paid for it, my ps3 is mine and I paid for it. When you start doing things to yours that completely ruin my experience when playing.. then it's an issue. If people only hacked the game that didn't involve online play, nobody would say anything. The fact that some powerful hacks/mods that I won't even get into here made it's way to the online play is what the major problem here is.
Besides, you bought your ps3 so you do own the system.. you do NOT own the OS it runs. If you want to develop and code your own version to play on your own network.. then you can do anything you want. Just because you bought a ps3 doesn't mean you own any portion of their OS or the PSN.. so no, you can't do anything you want.

In games like modern warfare 2 there were wall hacks, aimbot hacks, god mode hacks.. I mean you name it, they had it. It was a joke.
Hack YOUR game all you want, but stick to the part of it that isn't online. When you code things to work on the PSN and ruin it for me and thousands of other people... there is a problem with that. I didn't pay for my ps3 and my games just to go online and get cheated by some 12 year old watching tutorials on youtube on how to enable godmode.
Go check out the callofduty.com forums sometime, the ps3 section. Granted it is full of kids who are crying about everything in the game.. but it also full of people who have been banned for jailbreaking their ps3.

Well played sir!

Get over it, its a game its not the end of the world. There have been cheats for games since day one and there always will be if you don't like it don't play them or complain to Sony for creating a system that can get hacked by a lone 21 year old that in my opinion they should employ to help make the ps3 more unexploitable.

And anyone caught cheating or modding will be banned, just go check out some of the forums and you will see. There will definitely be cheats, only now there are ways to report these cheats and people are being console banned. Keep cheating, eventually you'll get tired of buying a new ps3 everytime you get console banned... that helps me "get over it"
You don't have to agree with me, doesn't really matter if you don't. Sony is taking big steps to cut out hacking.. and you don't have to like that either.. but I guess you'll just have to "get over it".

At any given time you can go online in Call of Duty:Black Ops and have anywhere from 300,00 to 700,00 people playing. Sometimes more than that.. so well over a million people play this game online.
IF I have to explain how hiring a guy who made it possible to, at the very least, "piss off" the majority of these people would be a bad business move.. then I won't even try.

He wasnt really creating it to be a entry to online cheating. He just wanted a backwards compatible console with 3rd party and homebrew apps. Why not share that with the online community who want to customize their system? Theres been cheating on ps3 way before he jailbroke it. Im pretty sure of that.

Yeah he did open doors for homebrew code; I can remember playing mw2 and people had wall hacks(could see enemy thru walls) ,getting nukes in 4 kill care package killstreaks(nuke is 25 kills without dying lol) ,so much hacking it was just insane. Black ops team does a find job with Modding, you mod/hack you get the banhammer in less than 24 hours. That kid is a freaking genius though.

Come on, Geo is a smart guy. He's smart enough to know what he was enabling. I'm not saying the guy should be set on fire.. but something needed to be done to stop it.
Anyone who wants to play old ps2 games that bad, go get a friggin ps2, they are dirt cheap these days. The ps3 security was pretty solid before this jailbreak, I won't say it was hack free, but not the overwhelming mess it was the last few months. Go youtube some hacked lobbies on modern warefare2, it was a disaster and I'm not joking.

But still. I mean c'mon. They are suing the crap out of this guy for bs. Okay he found a way to penetrate your walls, fix the damn walls completely and stop pushing crappy weekly updates that do nothing. Since they have money, they trying to set the hacking community straight and scare us.

Why shouldn't they set them straight? If every game you've ever bought online was hacked into things that were just "silly", then eventually people would just stop buying them at all.
They need to tighten up their "walls" but if they don't lay the smackdown on people who "penetrate the walls" then fixing them will not be enough. There will always be people trying to hack the ever loving crap out of it unless they start coming down hard on those people.
Geo is still young and I agree that he's a damn genius when it comes to this stuff. If he starts using his talents for something useful, then he will be perfectly fine..
**edit** Another thing here.. we aren't talking about a random hacker here and there. No, not at all. Geo made it pretty simple for people to hack/mod the ps3. Some games, like mw2, were completely overrun with hackers... completely. It was only a matter of time before it made it's way to every online game out there, unless it was taken care of early on.. like they are trying to do.

Geohot to jailbreak Xperia Play

Ok, guys...you heard me right!!! George Hotz (aka Geohot) has said in his blog (http://geohot.com/) that he has every intention to get his hands on the Xperia Play so we all have a jailbroken PSP phone!! I hope this means that with the help from Geohot we will have what we need to get out X10's bootloader cracked.
Here's the quote:
I will be the first person in line on the launch date of the Xperia Play, and itching to get my hands on the Next GEOHOT Project.
You mean root, not jailbreak
He doesn't even mean rooting he means cracking the bootloader... Lol this site makes me laugh fairly frequently.
I do mean root, but Geohot always calls his work "jailbreak" so that's what it will be called....and from what I can tell, he will not stop at rooting when the bootloader also needs cracking. So really, this would go beyond just root access if he's also cracking the bootloader.
He also rooted the PS3, but search for 'PS3 root' and 'PS2 jailbreak' and see which returns more results.
Awesome.! But wait..... oh yeah... x10 is just old and im getting a new phone next month...
lol i suggested he do this.....have the email in my sentbox and everything (a few weeks ago)

Less than a year for a phone is old? Maybe for consumer sheep.. No wonder the world is in the state it is, we allow ourselves to be raped and pillaged by capitalist greed, and instead of focusing on what is really going on, we worry about getting a new model phone every 8 or 9 months..

You know, I have been wondering this for a little bit. How do you think Sony will implement the playstation integration into the play? If it is just an app, like a psp emulator (seems too simple to be the case) then would there be a chance to port and mod it (to accept touchscreen input instead of hardware input)?
It may be possible to get playstation open to all android devices, I would love to see that.
I sort of expected to find an android app that would allow you to connect to ps3 in SOME way, but I haven't seen anything other than the crappy PSN app...no unofficial apps even (except for ps3brew)
Geohot is a freaking loser.

This part is for everyone:
Sony is also being sued for removing otherOS from the console because it was originally marketed as a stock feature. People paid for the console with the expectations of being able to use linux, then were threatened with the loss of other features (like the ability to watch bluray movies) if they didn't update, which removed the option to install linux, then took the partition on the hard drive dedicated to linux and wiped it clean. The worst part is this: 40gb consoles, for example, were sold with a 20gb ps3 partition, and a 20gb linux partition....when otherOS was removed, it rendered the linux partition completely useless. The partition was not added to the PS3 partition, but rather lost....so if you bought a 40gb console, after the v3.21 update you owned a 20gb console. All I have to say is "what the ****, sony????"
sorry, double post

Yeah, this counter-suit was brought on by geohot himself as a civil suit (The People vs Sony Computer Entertainment) and he's gone into amazing detail on specifically what grounds he is suing them on in his blog. It's a very interesting read if you have about a half hour to kill.

hahaha I'm surprised you don't own an iphone... you sound like the type that buys whatever you're told at face value.

does Apple market to idiots?

OK, so after about a week with my Xoom, i've been plagued with the question, "is that an I pad?" When I pronounce that it is definately not an I pad they ask me what it is. So I go on to explain the specs, both that of the I pad 1 & 2 and of my Xoom, I don't think one person that asked me understood a word of what I was saying. Nearly all of them ended up saying "so they are the same thing." I'm sure most of you can understand my frustration. So I end up resolving by kindly saying, yes they are both tablet computers and in that fact alone they are similar.
This leads me to believe that Apple sells most of their devices to people that look at the xoom and the ipad, see the price, and buy the I pad because its cheaper. Or maybe its just because ios is pretty much fool proof.
This is what worries me, are we becoming the minority? The small group of us that understand openness and what is worth a buck.
I understand the I pad itself is an amazing piece of equipment, but what the people I talk to don't understand is it is built on phone os. If they took ios out of the iPhone and stuck it in a macbook, I bet some people would still buy it, and not only that, I bet they would come online and rant about how amazing it is.
Honestly, is that really a question that needs asking? Apple peeps used to say "Our hardware is so superior to a PC... now it IS a PC.... then they said software is king... and they go and install windows on their mac also... For the last few years, Mac gets hacked the quickest at the conventions... most Mac people I ask don't run antivirus since they think their Mac is virus etc proof...
Mac / ios are for people who don't have time to learn the intricacies of a superior product or better way to do things.
You sir are spot on!
I don't think people like that should have a choice between tablets. To me it sounds like they should stay with the silly little closed source Apple products. It is a much safer and wiser choice for them. An open source OS like Android is no place for someone who thinks that a Xoom and an iPad are the same exact product. It's really funny though because this happens to me a lot so I can relate. Me being a tech expert, I run into this thing a lot.
And in my opinion, us computer techies are actually becoming more and more uncommon. The common person has no idea that you can even root/jailbreak a device, in fact... the less you know, the better off they are. Ofcourse that is just an example, but a good one indeed. It's pretty bad that most of the world relies on such things as iTunes because they cannot figure out how to drag and drop music onto an mp3 player. It's really messed up that people are not tech saavy enough to do the simplest things or understand basic tech knowledge, but hey... that's where us computer guys come in. We show up to save the day, and make all the money. +1 for all the techno nerds out there!
Android user for life!
They don't market to "idiots" per se, but they market to the general consumer products that "just work", with no extra setup or maintenance required. This is why they have prospered with 95% of the general consumer that buys these products.
Its easy for us at XDA to say that the iPad has its shortcomings, but to the random person who just wants it to work and doesn't want to tinker and mess with it the iPad/iPhone/iPod are perfect for them.
I love android and love tweaking/messing with it, but my girlfriend just wants to turn on her iPhone (or her computer, a Mac Mini, for that matter) and have everything work easily, no questions asked. Know what I mean? I wish I could recommend Android to more people, but unfortunately I really can't given the minimum level of aptitude to really take advantage of it.
They don't market to idiots. They market to people who want things simple and polished. And I wouldn't be so quick to shrug off the closed ecosystem until Android gets a:
Music store
Video store
Video rental
Netflix
Wide swath of high quality games
Android has yet to prove that an open ecosystem can bring in major developers and content providers. I hope this changes in the near future. Until then its clearly a better choice for 95% of the population to just go the Apple iPad route.
I totally get the "it just works" hypothesis... Until it just doesn't work. Want to see some serious joe and jen sixpack RAGE? Go to an apple store and watch them take in their broken macbook. Want to see some real android nerd RAGE? You won't. They fix it themselves or swap it out for one that does.

LOL. I dont understand the animosity towards Apple. They have created an amazing ecosystem around their mobile offerings. They make EXTREMELY high quality hardware throughout their entire lineup, to the point where no other OEM comes even close to matching them. They demand a premium for their products in more cases (somehow the Xoom is the one demanding the premium now), because of the quality of their devices and their software.
As for your "rage" comment, i doubt it. Apple offers a one year warranty on their macbook where you can walk into the Apple store and hand it to them and they will either fix it on the spot or send it to be repaired. No other OEM does it this hassle free. Also they sell Applecare which most "idiots" as you describe them probably would have purchased, extending the warranty to 2-3 years. This covers everything. Also, these idiots, if they have a question with a program or how to get their new ipod to work with their macbook, can just take it all to the store and someone will talk them through it nice and slow.
When someone asks me if my Nexus is the same as an iPhone I ask them "is a Mustang the same thing as a Camaro?" They are the same class of car (or phone) but are different brands and do things a little differently then one another.
I called them average joe and jen sixpack. Never called them idiots. Please, show me the error of my way and aide me on the road to recovery by quoting where I said they are idiots.
Apple is a small niche computer company. Their mobile/mp3 side is what is profitible. Honestly, they would have been bankrupt in the 90s if they had not given all those computers to schools in the 80s. Great strategy.
As for computers breaking, generally most break in the first month or so after they have a true burn-in or else they last for a long time. The year replacement thing is nice, but not really a selling point to me... Hell, even BB does this.

My good sir,
You are right, please allow me to rephrase this. Does Apple market to the ignorant population? Defined in this way:
Ignorant: unaware because of a lack of relevant information or knowledge; "he was completely ignorant of the circumstances"
Which really i know is a sold answer. But my points being that they market to the people that are unaware that buying from them, because they are stupid proof products, is allowingApple to do whatever they want. I don't have a problem with their products or most of their bussinesss strategy, but more and more they are straight starting to piss me off. And what bothers me are these idiots walking around acting like everything's not changing in big company's favor.
So after you rant a bit on me for calling them idiots, you go and do it... and then say the apple dude will talk them through it... nice and slow... like what? Morons? lol

People are willing to trade a lack of choice and openness for an ecosystem that just works and is really nearly flawlessly executed. They are willing to give up being able to flash roms for a device that has a couple thousand quality games, the ability to buy music from itunes, rent movies from itunes, watch netflix and have every app under the sun made for them first. If Apple oversteps their bounds, like they seem to be doing with the 30% subscription thing, people will abandon their platform. Until they do that, frankly they simply have the better ecosystem/devices until Android can make up some of that functionality differential.

[Q] Can someone extract an app for me?

Minecraft Pocket Edition was just released on the Android Market and is only available for the Xperia Play. I for one can't wait for the game, so if you are going to buy it can you please extract the .apk for other handset users? I'd really appreciate it and I'm sure others will too!
Problem is, if someone extracts the APK and shares it here, it would be considered as warez and shot down. No go there.
you should just wait for it to become available for your device.. it will soon..
Damn I forgot about that Oh well, I guess I can wait. I wish it was free since I bought the full game for PC. Thanks for your help!

Yes, people who buy old games which have been amorticized more times than man can count should not be forced to pay YET ANOTHER TIME for the same content. It's what we call added-value. If you wish to pay time and time again for the same game, you're free to write a cheque to the company you want.
If it were for people like you, we'd have to pay for a song everytime we wish to listen to it in a different place: In the car, in the stereo player, In the MP3 player... Again, write cheques to those guys if you want, but let us consumers look for the best value, and demand the best conditions for our money.

The people who don't make the emulators for Sony Ericsson do it for free (desktop emulators like EPSXE or PCSX) or for little cash (FPSE, which costs the same as ONE game by Sony Ericsson). Plus, the content, as I said, is amorticized from dozens to millions of times. If the world works with Sony screwing up consumers it's because of consumers like you who like to be screwed. Sony will only do as much as we let them get away with. If consumers like you start to educate themselves (a hardly possible task) and/or get replaced with conscious consumers, we'll get no more killing OtherOS, no more killing retrocompatibility, and no more multiple-cash-ins for the same content. However, as long as people like you say that it rains when they're pissing on us, certainly Sony will keep malarkeying us.

What's with this sense of entitlement? You bought a product. You didn't sign a contract. Sony can make any call they want. As much as you don't like it, Sony did it to help xperia users. You'd probably want to boycott Sony if they released ICS and it was worse than gingerbread. Just cut the crap with these stupid threads.

I bought the xplay on the commitment given by sony that the phone would see the ICS update. Sure, no contract but definitely covered under consumer law here in the UK.
As much as you don't like it, not everyone believes every word Sony says as if its holy scripture. Nor does everyone believe that they put enough effort into fulfilling their commitment to update the device.

Then I started using OnLive instead well, abusing the 30min Free Trials XD
Still, I'm not boycotting. Sony have a good reason for not updating. However, I do think they should release the code that they have now so that devs can work on it some more for people who want it.

No ones forcing anyone to join the boycott mate. Your entitled to your own views on the matter and I respect that.
As for Sony releasing their source for it, I'd say there is more chance in Syria stop killing their own people. Not very likely in other words.
I'm in on the boat. Quite frankly - if I had known Xplay to not get any update I would consider buying a phone that would or already has like G.Nexus. I thought since X.play will be on par in terms of software why the heck not when I'm getting the gamepad.
What sony did was -dare I say- fraudulent. They have advertised on false information - on the premise of which people have - TRUSTED - and bought their phone. That is a VERY legit reason to be pissed about.

First of all, if we are not getting ICS is not directly Sony's fault:
Logseman said:
Let's start from the beginning. The Play, from a pure hardware view, can run ICS. Sony, HTC and other companies are releasing hardware with ICS and lower specs than the Play (Tapioca, Desire C). We've seen that the beta runs mighty fine in the performance department, and it's obvious that the job can be finished if Sony cares to do so.
However, this is a matter of the gaming ecosystem. In short: the only companies Sony cares about are the big names like EA, Gameloft, Rockstar, etc. as they make the big majority of the Play game sales.
However, with regard to development, the Play is not important to those big names: they see it as "the redheaded stepchild Android", because they have to make extra effort to make it work with the game pads, instead of easily deploying the code in it like they do in the whole different platforms they code for (not only mobile phones, but smart TV's, console-related app stores, Steam and so on). Sony bribed those big developers with a lot of cash (remember all those free EA games and temporary exclusives?) so that the Play remained visible.
Fast forward to now. Gingerbread is present in a good 60% of Android Play Store-running hardware. ICS has only like.a 4%. Android is the best selling platform, with, let's say 500 million active devices. If my numbers are not wrong, that gives 300M GB devices 20M ICS ones. Developing with ICS in mind implies higher development costs, because you have to study the new features and use them. And of course, big name developers target wide audiences: by default they'll program with Gingerbread in mind, so they couldn't care less about ICS right now.
Someone mentioned Windows 7 incompatibility with old games: there is actually a Compatibility mode which was mainly designed for the purpose of using older games. Now Steam has taken care of that, which suits MS fine.
With the ICS upgrade, Sony probably contacted their "partners" and asked them to update their software (basically switch from the Sony custom gamepad framework to Google's standard one which Sony probably contributed themselves) for it to work properly in ICS, like they do in Sony gaming platforms. But unlike the PlayStations, it's those big name developers who are in control now, particularly in Android. Therefore, they showed Sony the middle finger.
[...]
TL;DR this is a power struggle between Sony and the big name game developers. The latter have won here, at the expense of the users. Support independent developers but make sure they don't make the "big name" status, because they'll get the need to control everything and screw users like this.

So I don't know why the hell you should boycott Sony, while they where trully wanting to launch the update (there you have the beta as a proof of it).
Second, the Sony that disabled the "Other OS" option on PS3 (Sony Computer Entertainment) is not the same Sony that decided to not launch ICS (Sony Mobile), so don't mix these two things, because it's like saying "OMG that movie from Sony Pictures is horrible, I'll boycott Sony without buying any of their smartphones!". Lol.
Ah, and as last point, the called "YLOD" (Yellow Light Of Death) of PS3 that somebody said is not the same as the red lights of death of Xbox 360. The YLOD was the most of times just a warning from the console, and not a signal of fatal failure. My PS3 showed the YLOD once and after disconnecting and reconnecting it here it is working fine since 2006 when I bought it.
-double post by mistake-
Interesting statements from Sony:
Back in the early days of Android upgrades, the company decided not to provide the Android 2.2 upgrade to its Xperia X10 phone -- which launched three months after the 2.2 platform's release -- saying that it believed "the features included in the Android 2.1 phone" were "on par with, and in many cases better than, a vanilla installation of 2.2." Um, right.
Sounds familiar?

Precisely this. I suspect people wouldn't have been half as mad if they hadn't promised it beforehand. I certainly wouldn't have been because I simply wouldn't have bought it without some sort of commitment to at least one big update. It was the last and most important factor in why I took the plunge and bought the phone.

Your view is based on taking Sony on their word. I have a hard time trusting them on it for various reasons, least of which because it just sounds like a half arsed excuse to me.
As for the beta, the idea of a beta is to find problems and bugs and make efforts towards resolving them with further builds, when did that happen? we sure as hell didn't see or hear about that happening. It seems to me as though the Sony dev dept realised it wouldnt just be a simple bodge job with the Play and bailed out without any real effort at it. Again, this is my view... you're welcome to disagree.
Although I didn't make that point, and I do agree that they are ofcourse different things, the two incidents were handled by the same company and so the reputation carries and is relevent.
Onto the YLOD, good for you... nobody I know with a 1st gen PS3 was so lucky (myself included). Do a quick search on ebay and see how many PS3s are being sold as faulty with the YLOD issue.
I couldn't care less whether these issues are linked to Sony, Microsoft, Apple, Samsung, whoever... loyalty to any company is a mugs game. I'll take issue when any of them when they take decisions that I don't agree with.

Very familiar. Its actions like these that don't instil trust and reinforce peoples reluctance to trust them on their word.
I don't want to be taking sides. But there are still people who don't want to gamble with flashing custom ROMS and stick to 'stock-with-a-little-mod' ROMS. And by that I mean stock ROM with bloatware removed, launcher modified, and the like.
Just like me. For now I don't think I could gamble with playing around with my phone. Nonetheless, I think I'm pretty satisfied with the GB I have now. I admit I'm a lil disappointed with Sony pulling the plug on the Xperia PLAY. But hell, I'm contented with my GB. I don't think I can stand a day with my phone showing off epic UI but can't even properly play my games. After all, the PLAY was supposed to show off with games, not some fancy UI. End of story.

For those of you that haven't heard, Android Gaming is taking on a new face... an actual CONSOLE, that's right folks, your very on console, here are the specs and the back story behind this amazing creation:
Click to collapse
OUYA began as a project concept like many, but has quickly set itself aside from any other project that may have been like it. In the course of 8 hours, OUYA has raised 1 million dollars as a new Kickstarter Project, and this is not even including the other 29 days left for funding (people must really wanna see this come to pass). Here is why its so great (SPEC CHECK):
- Tegra3 quad-core processor
- 1GB RAM
- 8GB of internal flash storage
- HDMI connection to the TV, with support for up to 1080p HD
- WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
- Bluetooth LE 4.0
- USB 2.0 (one)
- Wireless controller with standard controls (two analog sticks, d-pad, eight action buttons, a system button), a touchpad
- Shipped Android 4.1
Pretty impressive right?Due to the unexpected increase in funding, we could very well see an increase in that internal flash storage, maybe even an expandable memory slot, who knows. But all of that Tegra 3 quad core, ice cream sandwich, 8 Gig goodness is not even the best part! This console has been rumored to hit a TV near you one day for a mere $99. That's right, you could Enjoy all your favorites, whether you're a shooter addict and have a taste for some alien slaying in N.O.V.A. 3, or maybe you like to feel the virtual wind in your hair in a nice race in Real Racing 2, and for you people that love to serve your country, shoot a couple of spies in Modern Combat 3, all for less than the price equivalent of 2 new Xbox 360 games. Not to mention, with Android's recent participation in Major League Gaming, this could set the bar on a new plateau. The (virtual gaming) world is your oyster, and these are just the hard core games, the sky is the limit with compatibility due to it running our favorite sweet treat OS version.

And for all you developers and hackers, this is your call to fame! the console is (and I quote from the people that made it) "hackable". read this quote from Mobile Magazine:
Perhaps the even bigger kicker is that there is an open SDK where they promise to provide digitally-delivered titles for free. I imagine the marketplace will start with a handful of freeware titles and free-to-try games, but it has to open up to paid games eventually.
So any and all (LEGITIMATE!!!! NO PIRACY IS CONDONED, but then again, that's Android's major loophole with the whole Open Source thing) hacking and modding is welcomed, say goodbye to JTAG-ing or jumping through hoops to make your console your own (you paid for it so you should be able to do any LEGITIMATE, cant stress that enough, modifications you want! get the message Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo?).
So, you could spend $400 on a Galaxy Tab, or even $200 for the Nexus 7 for HDMI output, OR you can pay $100 for a console that (due to the vigorous nature of the Android Community) will inevitably get full access to the Google Play Store for you to play your favorite games (and maybe apps, don't quote me on that though) on your 1080p HD screen. BUT I'm just the messenger droid, the real magic is happening behind the scenes and hopefully we can get some awesom updates! Stay on the lookout for this project, and keep on gaming!

UPDATE I !!!
Onlive Available on The Ouya at Launch
The Android console Ouya has signed a deal with cloud gaming service OnLive, meaning hundreds of games from over 80 publishers will be available when the console is eventually released next March.
UK boss of OnLive Bruce Grove said, "When OnLive first heard about OUYA, we were excited to see console gaming becoming more available and open. Like OUYA, we came to gaming with a new vision for making top-quality gaming accessible to more people, and we continue to look for ways to expand on that vision.
"OUYA is rethinking the console business, making waves by using standard technology to make gaming for your living room accessible, affordable and more innovative than ever. In OnLive's case, we pioneered a groundbreaking, cloud-based system that instantly delivers games to any device on demand."
Design Still in Progress

UPDATE II !!!
Square Enix has announced it will release Final Fantasy III as a launch title for the Ouya console in March 2013.
In a statement translated by Square Portal, the company promised that they will also be providing more content in the future.
Final Fantasy III originally released on the NES back in 1990 and became the first Final Fantasy title to sell over a million copies, but has since had a 2006 remake for the DS. It seems this is the version Ouya owners will be getting as this was ported for Android devices last month, which is the operating system that the upcoming console will use
I love the ethos behind it
seriously, i don't see future for this. now every android-based device can run a lot of games, and more are coming. and stationary consoles like xbox and ps have much more to offer, but it comes with higher price, but it's a trade-off. Good luck though!!
They are up over $3M now, so I'm pretty sure they'll be able to give this a go. At $99, I think they have a shot for a lot of people who don't want to slap $200-300 down for a console (which appear to be moving to a digital download/streaming model anyway).
If they advertise well people buy them as a "first console" for their kids, they should sell enough to get into the market.
I'm interested in seeing how this project plays out.

basically, it's going be a a small computer based off a tablet operating system
looks interesting and if 99$ is the price, I think it will garner a lot of attention/interest... perhaps something that can compete against the apple tv?
Personally i think its going to be a succes, the fact that it is based of Android allows a VAST amount of customizations, Developers might even be able to make custom roms for it, it just opens up a whole bunch of possibilities for android and the gaming community
I think this is a fantastic idea! and I just pre-ordered mine for $99. Stoked to see where this goes!
Although, this does need the ability to have an external HDD, 8GB just ain't gonna cut it for AAA games, or more than 5 games on it at a time.
There is a nice review of this idea in Phandriud, I believe. With a read if you are excited for this.

With ≈25,000 consoles already sold by the second day and dev communities like XDA, I think this is already on its way to be a success. Once more people understand it's not all about flashy graphics, but more about free-to-play and tinkering with your home console, I think even more people will jump on board. On top of that, at $99 it's got high end tablet specs. Which will cost you 5x times as much. If this hits retail stores lots of parents and grandparents will be looking at this as gifts for the holidays.
I've pledged my console's worth and can't wait to get my hands on it.
I'm very interested in it. Now I just need to come up with $100...

I want one
As someone who has spend several hundred dollars building MAME/Arcade cabinets to get my old school nerd fix in this looks like something I would purchase. Granted I already have some original xbox's that are already loaded with emulators connected to my televisions and 2 Apple TV units in my house I can see this as being a device to combine the two.
I hope this project is successful and if they are available the next time I have an extra 100 bucks to blow I will likely get one.

This is why I've decided to go ahead and back the project. Even if it flops, those two things alone will make it worth the paltry $100.
very interesting....they've gotten over $4 million now....also interesting is the different pledge packages they have (up to $10,000)

I'll have two please.
If it all goes ahead as planned, they will be looking at releasing an updated version every 2 years i think. They cant go 10 years surely??
I ran across this the other day on kickstarter and was pumped, my wife was just shaking her head
I am excited to see where this goes especially since they were given the extra cash for development.
The ideas and concepts this is behind are great: an affordable console (not meant to compete with other consoles such as the PS3 or 360), development for it is free, and the creators urge others to root it as they wish! Great platform for indie devs, truly.
Though, I do see a lot problems here. One of them being the hardware for the machine, but it isn't with the hardware itself: it's with the progress of android hardware in general. At the rate we're going now, the Ouya will be too outdated to play games for more powerful hardware in a relatively short amount of time.
Another issue is with, again, not the machine, but with developers. Too many indie developers are notorious for pumping out lazily-made games and branding them as retro or just making no attempt at making quality games for a quick buck. And then you have free-to-play MMOs, but I'm sure you know where I'm going with that. To put it simply, the Ouya will be plagued with quite the amount of shovelware games, which won't bode well for its sale.
I think I had a few other points to make, but I can't remember them now, LOL.
Looking forward to seeing how this fares.
