wifi as main carrier and unlocked HTC Tilt - Networking

Good Morning,
I recently have purchased an unlocked HTC Tilt running win mobile 6.1.
I have data blocked (from my old phone/plan. I am never with out wifi access however so basically i would like to turn this into a cell phone that uses wifi for Everything else. I am also working on building SBS 2003server and would love to configure sql on my server when build to be my sms provider. Everything I have is ATT. ATT wireless. ATT uverse. I don't need or want to be charged/billed as I am already using ATT for everything which would basically be double billing.
I guess I am asking how can I create or adjust current HTC tilt to be a cell phone with wireless accessories apps and connections for all but the actual phone calls? Can the below be achieved via downloads, regedits, flashrom etc?
Media Net run via wifi instead of cell modem connection. instant messengers blue tooth GPS google mobile apps all running via wifi instead of cellular modem>? Ideas help links etc I have been all over and am totaly stuck and on overload between work the server and this.
not opposed to getting different unlocked cell as well if it would make the task less cumbersome.

Live Messenger on T-Mobile UK - is it blocked?

Hi all,
I am just wondering is the Live Messenger on T-Mobile UK blocked?
What it is, I just upgraded to the latest LVSW WM6 release from original T-Mobile WM5, and also installed the final Live Messenger cabs (from Black 3.0.1).
When I try to use sign in, it says there is a problem with my internet connection and won't connect. But it does trigger to GPRS connection, and also my IE and other programs can connect to the internet correctly.
So, I am wondering is Live Messenger blocked? Or is it a problem with my settings/installation?
Thanks.

Im thinking yes, since i cannot connect to IRC over tmobile either.
still working
I'm using live messenger with faria rom and i just tried it and still working
Below is T-Mobiles small print for their web'n'walk service, taken from this link:- http://www.powerupmobile.com/info-WebnWalk.htm
Subject to connection to Flext + web'n'walk. Minimum term contract and credit check apply. **Compatible handset required. Subject to coverage. Provides unlimited browsing on mobile handsets in the UK. Not applicable to connection via CSD. To ensure a high quality of service for all our customers a fair use policy applies. T-Mobile defines fair use as total UK data (both sent and received) of up to 1GB per month. T-Mobile may contact customers who exceed 1GB of data and ask them to reduce their usage. If data usage is not reduced, notice may be given, after which network protection controls may be applied. Not to be used for other activities (including but not limited to) : modem access for computers, internet based video/audio streaming services, peer to peer file sharing, internet based video downloads, internet phone calls and instant messaging. If such use is detected, notice may be given after which network protection controls may be applied. The application of network protection controls will result in a reduced speed of transmission.
Yea I think we are well-aware of this.
But you need to actually sign in to Messenger to check your Hotmail account!
And they never used to block it, although I had tried for 2 weeks until now.
I'm assuming T-Mobile are cracking down on "misuse" because I used to be able to use VoIP (SIP based) but it is now blocked. :-(
Im on WnW and can connect to live messenger fine, no problems.

What GPRS settings do you use?
And is it the £7.50 WnW or the more expensive one?
If they are blocking Live Messenger then I'm very happy I didn't change to T-Mobile! Sounds like it's a bit of a con to me.
Yea but what else can you have with unlimited usage?
Think we need to find a way to run it off port 80 like the desktop version can do.
To be honest I get 16Mb with Orange for £4 which doesn't have any restrictions on it. It nearly always lasts me a month.
can anyone confirm this is the case at the moment as i am unable to test...
Would be intersting to know exactly what their attitude towards this is..

Looking at this forum:
http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum/showthread.php?t=60741
it would seem that T-Mobile are cracking down on their T&C. I'm on WnW Plus and all seems to be working for me (I can still log on to Live and send messages). I haven't got around to installing Skype since flashing Black Dymond but shall probably give it a go tomorrow to see if that still works.
I'm not positive, but I think this isn't a problem with your carrier. I'm having this same problem with my Wizard. However, it only happens when I flash certain cooked ROMs. I'm trying to connect over wifi though, and am getting the same error and I just can't connect.
So, I was thinking that it might be certain builds of WLM that we are flashing on our phones. Any thoughts on that?
...this is stange as i have no problems at all. i'm on w n' w lowest plan using agile messenger/live messenger- the only thing they switched off is the ftp which i already ask them about.
i'm using lvsw's rom.
Well, maybe we should start listing our Windows Live builds. Be sure to mention if you have this problem or not. Maybe we can narrow it down that way. I'll start...

Who's next?
I just noticed my IRC is getting blocked too, on T-Mobile... it connects and disconnects right away. One way to figure out T-Mobile is trying via WiFi to compare.
This kinda sucks. For comparison, I am on the OLD Web'n'Walk 2GB plan before they revamped it with all the Plus/Max nonsense.
I'm running live messenger on WM5 and it connects with no problems whatsoever, i use it every day! (on it right now too). I am on the cheapest WnW plan. Not sure what version of Live I am using , as there seems to be no 'about' option on any of the menus!. If someone could tell me how else I can check the version i'd check.
In essence, I can say for fact that T-Mobile are NOT blocking Instant messaging.
Surely if they block it they're falsly advertising WnW?
I signed up to the £7.50 WnW package because it was being advertised as "the whole internet from my phone". Obviously there's going to be some restrictions because of bandwidth and hardware capabilities, but TMobile blocking things is something else.
-Edit-
Just re-flashed to Elf 2.1 and Live Messenger is working fine... I'll keep an eye on it though.

About Unlock G1

I just gave a call to Tmobile for request a unlock code. The rep. did it for me but she told me that I will not be able to update over the air and use instant messenger after unlock. I am just wondering is it true and why.
That's mostly BS I'm afraid.
1. Updates are sent via Google, not T-Mobile. Mine received updates whilst I was only connected via WiFi. Note that if you want to "root" your phone, you will be switching off OTA updates anyway.
2. Unlocking it and of itself won't stop IM working, but changing the SIM to a different carrier might. The built in MSN client is designed such that it will not work over cellular data (e.g. GPRS, UMTS etc) and uses SMS messages to communicate when not connected via WiFi. If you have a non T-Mobile SIM card and are not connected to a WiFi network, it will complain that it cannot read the phone number from the SIM card and fail to log in to MSN. Meebo on the market is one way round this, but this isn't everyones cup of tea.
Regards,
Dave
Im on at&t and can use IM without issue. Granted I am on ADP instead of RC33 which may have an impact since I only have gtalk but I just wanted to report my findings.
Above responses are correct. Of the four IM providers listed in the IM app, only GTalk communicates to its servers via data. The other three use customized sms gateways (i.e. they will eat up your monthly sms allocation rather than using the dataplan) and thus probably won't work outside of T-Mo. There are plenty of third-party IM apps that can connect you to AIM, YIM or MSN using the dataplan though.
Unlock away!
I unlocked my g1 using the T-mobile requested unlock code and everything works just fine. I don't think that person knew what they were talking about (but then it seems that they rarely do).

How can I use a smart phone on AT&T just on wifi

So I just picked up a couple of WM phones HTC743 and an AT&T Tilt 2.
I've been using one of the early windows smartphones for a number of years just for the the contact manager because it uses activesynch nicely with Outlook. Too damn small for any network access though.
I'm not terribly interested in a big data plan for a lot of internet access. I might pickup my email and surf a bit while I'm traveling though. I had wanted to use the wifi for that.
Th HTC s743 gave AT&T a bit of a startle because the didn't know what it was.
It's functioning but even though I have Data Conn. turned off it still manages to automatically turn on once in a while. I see daily very low volume charges even though everything says I'm accessing via WIFI.
I just plugged the simm into the Tilt 2 and though I haven't called AT&T as yet about this phone it did allow calls in and out but I can't seem to get the internet connection working even though wifi shows as being connected. It takes a long time for it to connect compared with the S743.
So ... is there a way to use either of these phones via wifi only?
Just turning off the Data Conn. on the s743 doesn't seem to completely work. The pre loaded GPS app appears to automatically turn Data Conn. back on. I know it does this if wifi & Data Conn. are both turned off.
A neat little AT&T billing trick?
From what I have read on here I think I maybe screwed on the TILT 2.
It also appears that until I register the Tilt 2 with AT&T my WIFI internet surfing just isn't going to work or do I have something else wrong?
I just have Data off, and no Data plan, but I'm using a android phone. I'm using the HTC Aria.
I was able to fix the S743 by just deleting the "APN"? in the configuration menu. I can always reload it quickly from AT&T if need be. But that phone also let's me pick between AT&T or Tmobile so I think it's more flexible to begin with. It's WM6.1 whereas the AT&T Tilt 2 is WM6.5 and there's no such configuration page where you can download the network configuration from AT&T. I've looked but maybe I missed something?
I also can't get this phone to work on WIFI either yet.
If you can, just change a character in the apn. This will stop it connecting, and it will let you easily switch it back on by changing it back if need be

Multi-channel data and voice on Verizon LTE?

Hi everyone, forgive me if my question doesn't make perfect sense, but I may not be using the correct terminology...
On my HTC Rezound on Verizon I am able to have tethering turned on, local data on the phone working, both at the same time that I'm on aa phone call. I can even recieve and send SMS and mms at the same time. I use my phone as my mobile hotspot when I work remotely, which I do quite a bit. Granted, the phone may be a little sluggish but for the most part it works like a charm where I will be connected remotely to my work desktop on a client being served by the hotspot, and at the same time I'm on a conference call for work.
It's my understanding that this sort of multiple connection usage is unique to the rezound (for Verizon's network anyway). Can someone confirm if this is something that the s4 can do as well?

Tethering on rooted and unrooted Android phones.

Hi.
Firstly I want to put aside all warning about if it is legal or so, focus on technical issue.
I am not new if it comes to networking, that's why I want to expand my knowledge.
Just got new Samsung Galaxy S3 mini, and wanted to try tethering with my sim card.
Got message on web browser in PC and mobile as well:
"Are you using your phone as a modem or personal hotspot?
Reference SIM002
Using your phone as a modem and connecting it to other devices through WiFi or USB to get onto the internet (also called 'tethering'), is not what the plan you're on was designed for. If you would like to speak to someone about tethering options available to you, please call 333 free from your Three phone.
In the meantime if you want to get your phone back to browsing the internet you'll need to turn it off, allow it to reset itself for a few moments, and then turn it on again.
If you're looking for a Mobile Broadband connection, you'll get a better, cheaper and faster experience on one of our Mobile Broadband tariffs or devices. Just go to your nearest 3Store."
I found some threads here on our forum, but no answer how does it work.
As in my phone (Samsung Galaxy S4 Relay) which is rooted it working fine.
Some people say network operator is doing Deep Packet Inspection - maybe, but it looks like rooted device appear for them as not hotspot and not rooted as hotpost.
Am I right? Is rooted phone doing it somehow smarted (e.g. making itself proper router with his DNS point and gate ?)
