What is the best ROM for the G1? (Stable, battery, performance) - G1 General

My friend has a G1 and wants me to give it a boost.
Which ROM would I be best putting on his phone? (preferably FroYo and with A2SD)
Need as much stability as possible so once it's done, it's done and I won't have to do it all again.
I'm a DHD user (Leedroid 2.2.2) so that's the kind of standard/stability that I intend to put on the phone.
This is also why I want to get it perfect first time as it's not my phone and I won't be testing it for any more than a couple of days.
Any help would be much appreciated

I have CM 6.0.0, it's ok but seem to have a few gliches. I read that there are a few out there, but cannot confirmed witch is the best one yet. Hopefully I will soon.

I've been running this Spanish ROM for the last year or so: SuperCSDIV4_ENV_MLIGNv3
I came across this youtube and tried it out:
WHOOPS, I'm new so I can't post links. It's youtube video 3whjnUg-c2w
It's only 1.6 but runs really smoothly and I've rarely had issues. Recently I've been having battery issues but I think that is just because my battery has gone south.

I have Emonther The Official. Its magic for battery! It have the best battery from the all I have ever tried. But it isnt so fast after days of use. Maybe its because LauncherPro, i dont know, but its took often a lot of time to load icons ...
POST SOME MOAR

I'm having great luck with Ginger Yoshi, although it is not quite fully developed.
I didn't like any of the Froyo ROMs I tried ( froyo4trout cyanogen, biffmod)
My wife loves superD (donut) because it is much faster than the newer roms, but won't be much of an update.

With your criteria, I'll go for ezterry's AOSP froyo or froyofortrout, both are very speedy n stable. The only diff is that terry's aosp is odexed so not much theming can be done, and froyofortrout is de odexed to allow theming and etc.
Do the ramhack by flashing terry's radio and you'll get xtra ram on top of the very stable and speedy plus battery friendly rom =D

I've read good things about Ginger Yoshi but something final would be much more ideal.
I've heard lots of good things about FroYo4Trout though and I am leaning towards it.

I think we have a winner, doubt he'll be too fussed about theming and I'm sure I'll find a way to deodex through adb if necessary.
-Reboot into recovery
-adb shell mount /system
-adb shell rm /system/app/Rosie.odex
-Reboot
Something along those lines maybe, only replace rosie with whatever else? I haven't picked it up yet but I'll have a look around when I can.
I'm assuming the ramhack only works with ezterry's?
Thanks for the input from everyone,

I might just get with ezTerry's ROM, if the ramhack works well with it.
Right now, I am having to recharge my G1 every 8 hrs or so, weather I use it a lot or not. It's a constant power drain.

As a followup, I used froyo4trout the longest of any ROM I've flashed. It was stable and good battery, I maybe just never could find the right settings to get the performance I liked. I also didn't have (or know about) the ramhack, otherwise that may have helped my overall user experience. I had a few issues related to running out of space even though I was using a2sd. I had to clear cache and dalvik often to keep things moving.
Sent from my HTC Magic/Dream using XDA App

I didn't know about ramhack too, until I read the forum. I have A2SD on mine, but half of the programs I downloaded won't let me move it to the SD, especially the reasonably updated apps, it forced me to put the apps back to the internal memory (What's up with that? We are trying to optimize our internal spaces here), or it won't let me update the apps.

I'm gonna go ahead and say these dev's that are workin on these roms are like genius . Most devs would leave such an old phone bc of its old hardware (including cyanogen lol) but other devs make the best out of what they have and that's pretty sick . So its pretty safe to say you guys have the best of the business workin for your device

The ram hack is done by upgrading your radio and spl, check ezterry's thread or signature. It would work on any rom, there is an active development on froyo 2.2.2 by e344, it uses less ram, but im still waiting for final version of gb by yoshi, terry =D
Happy flashing! Use switchrom if u want to test diff roms, it helps a lot, google it up, or youtube it, its a simple script

I think I just found the best ROM for G1.
SuperAosp DM 2.8.2.
Got it on and using it right now and very fast on G1.

Although it's not final yet, I've been partial to COS-DS Gingerbread with built-in apps2sdext. I'm also using Firerat's CustomMTD & AIO for swap. I've also flashed the new radio & spl with ramhack kernels, which has been fairly quick & stable, for a noob like me. I was previously using CM 6.1, but the froyo apps2sd was a disappointment. Tried Sparksmod for a day or 2, but that was quite unstable. I happen to like Gingerbread with my Dream/G1...

I was using CM 6.0.0 DS RC1 until this past weekend with it throw my G1 into a loop at the splash screen. With no backup since I was unable to get in the recovery mode. I end up having to Wipe and reflash my G1.
johnson8cyl recommeded the SuperAosp ROM, and I tried it. It works well with my G1 and still running at full speed. Other than the launcher I keep giving me FC every so often (I need to find a better launcher). It doing well with 10 apps loaded on my internal storage.

I would say ezterry's 2.2 with the ramhack. Just my 2¢ stability and u wont have to mess with it much. I'm running superaosp but might have to play a little too much for u.

phone is too damn slow

I'm tired of my phone being too slow, responding too slow to touch, lagging..
I have the android 2.1 OS on my HTC Hero CDMA and I was wondering if there were any general recommendations to speed up my phone.
I would be willing to put on a hacked OS, root it, or do whatever it takes as long as the phone is still fully functional. I'm pretty new with this stuff so bear with me.
Thanks,

I rooted, installed CM6, my phone was totally transformed.
Cm 6 - rc1 is a good start simply amazing going from stock. I get 0 lag. I must warn you always do a nandroid back up before changing ROMs. Its basically a clone of your phone's software and settings allowing you to recover from a bad issue.

+1 to all previous posts.
The Hero running out of the box stock with Sense is really pretty slow. I liked Sense, but I like a faster device better.
Follow the well documented instructions found on this site for rooting the Hero and then play around with different ROMs until you find one that fits you.
Personally I've been running Darchdroid and don't plan on ever switching again.
I don't even know what lag is any more.
Thank you for your responses.
Is there a link for a tutorial or forum topic about where to download CM6 and how to install it?
Thanks.

The problem with installing something like CM is that those ROMs are missing a lot of the stuff that you are used to using. And you might spend a long time downloading, and looking for the apps you need. I found CM to be not much faster and a pain in the ass in some ways (the dialer is weak, same with the keyboard, etc.)
I know people are going to start pointing to all the apps you can download to replace what is there, but it's a pain, and time consuming.
If anything I would try one of Fresh's ROMs, which have Sense and most of the HTC apps. And his Toast versions allow for overclocking as well.
On another note, your Hero should not be slow. Have you tried a factory reset?? I have used slow Heros before, but when they are working properly there should be almost no lag with the stock 2.1 OS.
The kernel is under the thread cdma android development and as far as cm6 u can overclock as well with a different kernel and as for aosp vs sense its just user preference tryem both c which one u like best and stick with what works for u that's what there here for both are outstanding

That's the beautiful thing about CM6 though is the customization. I know its personal choice, but I actually love the CM6 Phone Dialer (one of the guys over on the theme board customized the background for in call to be a nice cyan color other than green) and like the AOSP keyboard moreso than the Sense Keyboard. You can however, install a variety of HTC_IME keyboards and get that same Sense functionality on CM6.
I only do a new nightly every few days and it might take me... 10 minutes or so to get my phone setup. That includes a Full Wipe, ROM Flash, Kernel Flash, Circle Battery Flash and now a Phone Dialer Flash. I connect to my wifi and the Market downloads all of my apps for me and I restore my settings with ADW Backups. Logging into an app every now and then doesn't bother me after I've flashed a new ROM.
This is an "to each his own" situation and I did use FreshROM for quite some time before making the switch. To me, I don't plan on looking back. I may be switching to the T-Mobile G2 when it's released and as soon as CM is made available for it I'll be rooted and running it in no time.

htc hero flashed to Android 2.3 Ginger Bread or prefer to Android 2.2 Froyo

htc flash hero to Android 3.2 Ginger Bread or prefer to Android 2.2 Froyo
I wanted to ask how it is flashed to Android 2.3.Denn as I can read it here it is indeed the rom, but it is generally weak for the Hero? Or rather 2.2 flashed? For I bröchte already a rom, the but also in German
I still have Froyd Villain Rom but I read a lot of good about the 2.3 roms and I am waiting to change over as soon as the RC are done and Elelinux puts out a definite version of his rom(or Cyanogen).
For the german part, I decided for myself to go with english because it is easier to find as it is standart on the roms and it is also easier to describe with the english words when I have problems (also the descriptions use the english terms). As far as I know in most roms you can chose the language and it should work without problems...
but how do I braid at all? because I have 2.1 on it yet
I am not sure what you mean by braid, but if you mean root, than here you go:

Will probably flash CM7 tonight just to check out... hopefully it will become final SOON ^^

I'm on the cm7 nighties too. The default keyboard alone makes 2.3 worthwhile!
First time ROM user....
I was at a loose end yesterday and ended up using ROM manager to install Elelinux 7.0.0 version of Gingerbread on my GSM HTC Hero, TMobile branded G2. I have been messing about with root and launcher pro/ADW for ages and was getting really bored with my Hero, too slow for lots of apps, too old etc. This ROM has given it a new lease of life and lots to play with. I haven't fully worked out what's what etc and am loathe to fill it up with lots of personalised settings and apps because I might well find myself flashing another ROM before long. Thanks be to Google for storing most of my stuff in 'the cloud' and making me NEVER have to lose my contacts again.
I am impressed with this ROM, no crashes, fast and efficient. Only a bit of graphics lag on swiping across screens.
Also, does anyone know why there is no pinch on homescreen to show miniature versions of the screens?
Thanks,
Hamish

I think Froyo is probably the fastest on Hero from what I've heard and personally experienced with a mix of Ele CM6.2 Speed, and Ele/Cronos Gingerbread builds.
The difference though, especially with Ele 1.1.1 for me at least who doesn't really have the animations and runs at 691MHz isn't enough for me to want extra speed by downgrading to 2.2. I'm happy enough eating some gingerbread everyday now, although it took a while!
Since my last post I realised that I was on 0.9. I then tried froyd villain but got scared. I now have 1.1.1 and it's great. One problem is the gps losing it's fix. Any ideas on how to fix?
I LOVE the new photo gallery and the camera seems better too.

I put gingerbread 2.3 on my hero and it was so much better for a while.
But now for some reason it has started to run a bit slow not loading the home screen. I have not able to figure out why yet.
Do not want to go back to 2.2 now.
Launcher pro does not seem to like gingerbread for some reason. keeps force closing.

Suggestions for the best roms for Droid incredible

I am wanting to knw what are some of the best roms out there for the dinc. I like custom themes and a rom that get be really customized. Any suggestions. Post here please.
Dinc
CM7 for AOSP Gingerbread goodness, Super Z for Sense Froyo goodness. Both of these can be customized fairly well.
So both of these have custom mods for them. And are they stable. I'm running redemption revolution 2.3 now.
Dinc
MIUI rules all... lol jk, but it is sick. i used to need to change roms all the time and do all these themes and stuff until i got on MIUI and I haven't left since November'ish.
it is by far the most customizable rom out there right now. it allows you to theme and customize without having to flash zips and all that stuff, and you can easily go back to stock. theres an online theme app which allows you to download themes made by people all over the world. if you really want to get creative, you can open up the zips of the themes and mix and match stuff up to get exactly what you want.
it's quite the rom, you should really give it a try if you want customizability... and give it more than a day, see what it really has to offer before rejecting it simply because it doesn't have an app drawer.
edit: especially since its getting upgrade to 2.3 in the next week or so, things should get really interesting.. might be a little buggy here or there because of the transition period, but the 2.2 versions are pretty damn stable

CM7 has alot of theme's that ar installed through an app that is baked in, which makes it very simple. Super Z isn't as conveinent to theme, but it has been done. LauncherPro also adds some very big possibilities for theming. CM7 still doesn't have a "stable" release. But I haven't had a single problem with it over the past week. Super Z is solid as a rock also.
I will look in to the muiu rom. I have used it before but o couldn't find any battery or signal mods for it. Or any themes. I like theropy 6 bar signal and the circle battery. Cancell u get them for muiu rom

Ive used mikfroyo z rr-engineered longer than expected. It is one smooth and stable rom with excellent battery(all day with mod to heavy use), using ziggys latest bfs w/o havs kernel. No fcs, no reboots. Remember, every rom worls a little different with every phone, but this rom acts like it was made for "my" phone. The only mod i have is the gb keyboard.

Sup dude, if you want suggestions you should give us an idea of what you're looking for first.
I'm currently using CM7 HyperDroid which suits me cos it's minimalistic, dark and fast. So if you like those things to, I definitely recommend it. Another good thing about this ROM is that you only need a 150mb CWM partition, which is good for us EU owners.
I've only tried one other ROM and that was UltimateDroid. It's another fast ROM (I'm pretty sure it's based off CM7) which has a lot of theme options. It's got a more stock feeling to it, but if you don't like the default green it's got red, blue etc.
I'd also suggest having a look at the MIUI ROMs too, I haven't tried one yet but they have some interesting features.
Hope this helps man.

I've had no luck with Sense ROMs so far. Not fast enough for the added eye candy. Been a long time CM user and finally tried MIUI yesterday morning. OMG! Within two hours I became a diehard MIUI fanboy. Been hammering it ever since and it's blowing me away. More functionality than CM, same level of zippy performance, but much better eye candy. It have yet to find one thing I don't like and it keeps amazing me as I stumble upon new feature after new feature. I don't think I can go back to any other ROM now.

MIUI needs a 120mb CWM so it's low profile like CM. Both good for EU owners. Unlike that damn 400mb for Sense.

One of it's few lacking features... true. Always forget about that since I listen to mp3, podcasts, and internet radio. FM radio pretty much unnecessary here in the states with the other alternatives.
I'm also on miui but I installed launcher pro because I didn't like the iphone like launcher. you should try it. the roms are very smooth and fast. i'm using the ndt one and won't go back unless the gingersense roms are working without bugs.

I am the developer of SkEye ( I can't post URLs yet. Search on Android Market by that name). The app works fine on 99% of the phones but not on HTC Wildfire! On Wildfire stock ROM, the app receives a SEGFAULT and closes silently. This shouldn't happen for a Java application, and from the logs it appears to be a bug in the OpenGL implementation in the stock ROM.
I don't have a Wildfire phone myself; but I get lots of user reports by email and Market comments.
Since we are talking about the best ROMs, can you try my app on your ROM and see if you manage to not crash the app?
Here's the exact sequence of steps to reproduce the bug:
Set the location on first run. Approx location will do.
Click Menu -> Indirect Mode
Click Add new alignment
Select any object. Doesn't matter which.
Click "Return" or press the back key.
Search for any object (Menu -> Search or the Search button)
If the app doesn't crash after this, please let me know your ROM. I will recommend it to my users.
Thanks!
Does your app depend on the usage of a GPU? The Wildfire and the Tattoo are among the few phones that doesn't have it, so that could be the problem.

It does require OpenGL, but doesn't strictly require a GPU. The interesting thing is that the app doesn't crash outright. It crashes only after the above steps are executed. I will start a separate thread in the developer section when I get access to it. For now, I would like to know if its a ROM specific issue. Particularly, does the Cyanogen ROM have this bug or not.
It crashed here also, on latest CyanogenMod 7 nightly. The "called unimplemented OpenGL ES API" errors in the log are fairly common though, and happens with almost all apps using OpenGL, like games etc. They still work fine though.
rempuzzle rom
To put in my two pennies worth, the REMPuzzle Rom is one of the best sense roms I've found:

This isn't a issue of cyanogenmod, its because an older version (gmaps 5) is running on the sense roms, you can deinstall on cyanogen the new version of gmaps and install the old 5.0 and its running like on a sense rom. So don't blame cyanogenmod ( the best mod for me so far), no offence to you but most of the complains about cm7 are about users don't know how to handle cm7.

I'm not knocking CM - I've used it and know the workarounds. However, the OP asked for the best sense ROM so I gave my opinion.
well i have tried, CM7, remPuzzle and jokerdroid. for me jokerdroid is the best, its very simple too, just flash the thing and you are good to go. i really like the aero theme too.

I've got 5.9 running on rempuzzle rom. which version does cm7 have?
I hate threads like this, each rom has its good points and also bad points too.....
Its all about preference try the different roms till you find one that suits you, its taken me nearly 3 months to make my mind up and trust me I've tested every rom. I don't believe in an out of the box rom as the customization of android is just unbelievable, every single rom can be tailored to your own needs, tweaked for extra performance and should be too, else what's the point in this community?
I've only been using android for around 5 months to its full potential and everyday I'm learning more and more ways to make my phone my own and as unique as I can make it.

I agree, but it's always good to get opinions so you know where to start. When I first started out on custom ROMs replies like "try them all" just aren't helpful.
