[Q] Focus affected by static electricity? - Focus General

I have a Sandisk 32GB MicroSDHC card in my Focus and I have a problem with it resetting itself every few days. I understand that there is an issue with instability with SD cards but I am wondering if, in some cases, it may be related to static eletricity. When it resets, it happens when the phone comes in contact with a surface such as my nightstand or the leather case I am using. It has never happened while I am holding and using the phone. It is a known problem that the touch screen does not respond properly when the phone is sitting on a surface. Last week it completely locked up with a black screen when I handed it to a coworker. I had to remove the battery to get it back. When is resets itself it comes back up with all factory settings. It doesn't prompt me to set it up like it does upon first boot. If I power cycle it, it comes back with everything intact and I have no problems until the next time it reboots. Perhaps this issue only occurs when an SD card is installed. The back case has a raised ridge that corresponds with the position of the SD card. I just put a piece of electrical tape on the inside back cover where the SD card is located. I will post again when I know if makes any difference.
Is anyone else having similar problems that look like it could be static related?

The tape made no difference. The phone reset itself again today. Sigh....

its your sd... it is not stable... theres many many scenarios that the bad sd cards cause... 3/4 of the info in the working sd list thread is good... so far not seen a 32 that is stable... still waiting for the samsung that was supposed to be released last month... a 16gb thats solid till then is the samsung...

Strange SD card behaviour

Whenever I soft reset the device the memory card is not picked up, or only half the directories are picked up, and I have to pop it out and back in again for it to recognise everything correctly..
I am running 1.72 and we have three imates here at my work and they all behave like this.
Sometimes the Storage Card just seems to vanish even when there was no reset and the card has to be ejected and reloaded to pick it up again! This occurs daily for me (only had the device 4 days though) and one of the other guys here says it hapens quite frequently to him too!
Is this common behaviour for the imate/xda2 ???
I had similar problems with my SD card in my XDA2 (1.66.00wwe), i took out the card and formatted it a few times in my PC and so far it dosent seem to have happened again. This problem originally occurred in my ipaq 4150 so im not sure whether it was card related or not. There's an application called Pocket Mechanic which can run tests on SD cards, might be worth running that to see if it picks up anything. If you need a copy of it you can "borrow" mine.
mmm, no problems with pocket mechanic test!
Might back up data on card and try a low level format through PocketMechanic and see if that helps, but it is strange we have multiple devices and cards here (my work) all with the same behaviour. My Card and imate are both brand new..
Might be of interest: what brand of cards are you using?
There ARE issues with SD cards, mostly related to data transferrate.
Some brands are fast (ie KingMax i read) some are very slow (ie Kingston/Toshiba i noticed)
I bought a Fujifilm 512MB SD card off ebay for a silly low price, originally blamed my problems down to that fact but it seems to be ok now.
It is a Sandisk card (256mb) so VERY slow
Not sure if it is related, but I had an issue with mine, where I could read the SD Card in my PC, but not in my XDAII, unless I pushed it very firmly down, holding it in place.
It turned out to be dirty connections on the Card. With a bit of a clean (with a Screwdriver), everything works again!

FYI - a pencil eraser is the best thing to use to clean contacts on PC boards, memory cards, etc. It is only mildly abrasive but does a great job of removing grime, etc.
HTH
Browsenow - excellent idea. In fact it comes close to my blue-tack inventions. Well done!
Jupiter - Thanks! I have adapted pencil erasers to another problem for which your solution was BluTack . . . the missing external aerial cover. I found a pencil eraser that was the same diameter as the aerial (antenna for those of us in the US) connector hole, chopped it off and inserted it. It has the added benefit of being firm and slightly longer than the hole, so it provides stability when the device is laying on the desk.
Oh well . . . I guess I need to find something more interesting to fill my days . . . like making my imate work as a TV remote so I don't have to wrench the actual remote from the Mrs.
Are you trying to say that the rubber solution is better than the blue-tack solution! I vouchsafed you the honour of saying that it came close. Dont throw that back at me. !
Blue-Tack is better because
1. Its sticky
2. Its blue
3. You can use it to stick things
4. In an emergency you can take it out of the XDA and stick a note to the fridge
5. In the event of being bored you can make a baby teddy with it
What can rubber do apart from rub.
It was a 'good' idea but lets keep it at that
First of all, you did not say it was a 'good' idea - in fact you said it was an 'excellent' idea. As for BluTack . . . if you use it too many times it will be neither blue nor sticky!
As for the eraser, it is better because -
1. It is firm
2. It is NOT blue
3. It can erase things
4. In an emergency you can . . . um, you can . . . :?
5. In the event of being bored you can use it to CARVE a baby teddy - well a really tiny one!
Ha! Long live the eraser 8)
Now your just being silly!
Where are my blue-tack buddies when I need them?
They have all abandoned you and are out searching for various sizes, shapes and colors (colours?) of ERASERS!
They should start their search here: http://www.staples.com/Catalog/Browse/Sku.asp?PageType=1&Sku=507053

My Memory Card wont stay in anymore :'(

Anyone know why ??? It just wont click in anymore... I woke up one day and it was just sticking out - Ive tried jamming it in but its just not reading it!!
Anyone have any problems like this before ? All my stuff os on the card :'(
Only replying so you dont feel alone. But 1st off check if anyone broke inside it, Anything stuck? I could suggest opening it if you have the tools to check it out and maybe fix it if its not latching right.
Also you can still get a adapter at radioshack for the mini sd. I did. It was 20$ came with SD, Mini SD and Micro SD all in one. So least you could get your stuff. =)
Mem Card
Does it work if you hold it in? If so, I didn't like that mine came out occasionally so I hot glued it in. Hold it in, run a small bead of hot glue on top wait a sec and press the glue into place with your thumb. The glue wont run into the phone and it's easy enough to remove when you actually want it out. If your careful you can even heat it a little with a hair dryer to smooth out the glue. Personally, I don't ever take mine out. I had problems with the device not recognizing my files after removal. I install most everything to the SD that works right there.
**Try this at your own risk. I've done it several times and never had a problem. Just don't blame me if you break something.**
You can apply a thin layer of sticking tape around it to keep it firmly in the slot, but make sure you don't cover the connections with it.It'll stick in there and work proper.
Cheers
It just doesnt seem to be reading it at all - But when I plugged in into my wii all the music is still on it and it seems to be working fine.
When I try and jam in my old card it flashing for a second to say would you like to format the card so it must be working kinda... Argh!
Its really annoying - I used it as an mp3 player quite a lot and theres just not enough internal space...
Hopefully it will fix itself soon as that appears to be the only hope
I'm wondering if maybe the mech is loose and pushed inside. May take a little surgery. If I remember right there is some sort of spring loaded mech that keeps pressure on the card connections while in the slot.

SD Card & screen alignment - Hardware Problem?

Hi all,
weird one this, whenever I insert an SD card in to my slot the screen alignment goes completely out of whack. All screen presses are shifted anything from 2mm to 2cm to the left. I have tried a variety of ROMs and memory cards and always the same problem!!! Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening or how it might be cured? I was thinking it might involve cracking it open?
Has anyone else had a similar problem?
Hi,
I heard that several type of SD exist on the market, and are build of different kind chip "layers" (I don't remember the exact technical detail). Well, a lot of them are VERY SLOW and are designed to be cheap and for data storage only, and not realtime and CPU handling. So you can have a 2 GB SD with a low cost that seemed a good affair, but in reality is built of a single layer and it is very slow compared to another more expansive. The SD circuit refresh timing could influence the HTC, so that the video pressure are wrongly calculated. The point is that almost nobody write the SD layer info on the box.
- Did you try with a good brand SD ?
Regards.
Well I tried one from Moby memory that was working in my past phone fine and one from China. Turns out it was the phone in the end anyway as once I got a new Trinity everything works fine! Strange but I guess we will never know why it started being weird...
thanks for your response

XPERIA XI is killing MicroSD-cards

The battery covering is the worst piece of engeneering i ever saw ! it does not fit and with its help i killed already 3 SD-cards (mechanically broken).
How do you save your cards ???
killing?
I think the problem is that you aren't pushing your sd card in all the way, or you're loading it wrong. Are you sure that your sd card isn't in the ejected position when you attempt to put the cover back on?
I'd say take it back to where you got it or buy a new battery cover... I've not had that problem nor heard of anyone else with the same issue.

Anyone notice how tight the microsd card is with the battery?

Not sure if anyone who is using a micro-sd card has noticed, but mine is really really snug against the battery. Whenever I take the battery out, I'm afraid it'll snap my sd-card in half. The sd-card is definitely pushed all the way in. Looking closely, it seems like the edge of the sd-card is not exactly flush with the plastic around it so it sticks out a tiny tiny bit into the battery area. The battery is definitely pushing against the card as it's harder to insert the battery in with the sd-card also inserted.
Is anyone else seeing this "issue"? (fyi, this is for the moto e4)
yeah, same here! luckily I haven't needed to remove the battery yet.
Mine is very very close to the battery also, but since the battery comes out from the bottom first, you shouldn't have any issue with it damaging the SD card.
not here. it's fine.
By me it's fine also
While mine does seem very tight, I can confirm at least on my unit that the micro SD is not at risk of damage. That's after I put the battery in a few times very carefully to watch where it contacts the SD card. It is very snug, though.
I actually did a few "aggressive" removal and installs of the battery a few times to test this and my SD card still works fine so everything should be good. If it ends up bothering you too much you could actually use a fine grit sandpaper paper and file down the end of the SD card a little bit.
Mine seemed fine when I used an SD card for rooting on the US version (XT1768). Do you have the international version (XT1760)? I've seen reports that they are a bit physically different.
I have the US version. After a couple weeks of using the phone, it now seems like the battery is not as snug against the sd card as when the phone was new. I had taken the battery out and reinserted it several times over the weeks as well. Perhaps things have been "broken in" now.
