**FIX** cannot connect sd card to pc - Fascinate General

Mods-please move this post to wherever you see fit.....
I have been searching the internet for 2 full days trying to figure out why my new pc wont recognize my sd card when i plug it in.
finally, I stumbled across a fix posted for a similar problem with another USB thumb drive, and it worked perfectly!
I hope this helps anyone like me that was ready to rip their hair out.
For the USB thumb drive, try the following:
"Run "regedit" and select the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/MountedDevices" folder. See all the "Dos Devices" listed? You'll have one entry for each physically mounted drive (HDD or Disc) plus you'll have one show up for each USB drive you attempt to insert. Double click each device listed and see if you see text saying something like "U.S.B.S.T.O.R...". Once you find that device, right click it and select "Rename". Now change the drive letter to something unused... like Q: or something. Close regedit, disconnect the USB device and reconnect again.
If all went well, you should be able to see your new drive when you plug it in. I recently had a conflict with my Sandisk 5-in-1 reader and my PNY thumb drive. I forced my PNY to be the N: drive and the Sandisk to be the M: drive, that solved the problem. Unfortunately, I can't get this darn USB-IDE to resolve it's conflict."
Good luck!

Problem copying over large file to 2 gig card.

Hey, I'm having a problem copying a 300 megabyte wmv file from my computer to my 2 gig stick. Whenever it gets to about 5~10% goes back to 0 and starts again, does anyone have this problem? Or, does anyone know what's the matter?
Thanks!
BTW, my card is a 2 gig MiniSD on my Cingular 8125.
i havent tried this.. dont use my phone much for music and video, mostly just all data... but is it going through activstink? if so is it converting the file? and 300meg file going through the phone takes a while, i would try using your mini sd adapter and a card reader and connect it to your pc and just copy it over that way
Oh, thank you for the reply, I'll try to directly transfer it from PC to stick instead of through activesync. No, it says conversion (none) so I assume it is not converting. I will see if I can plug the stick into my computer.
Btw, when I remove my stick should I power off my 8125? Almost everything is installed into my stick.
Edit: Nope, , there is no place on my computer for me to plug my stick directly into.
no need to power off... and you should have gotten an SD adapter for your mini SD card. after putting the mini sd card into the SD adapter then would need a SD card reader which are very inexpensive to acquire if you dont have one already. then plug the reader into the computer, the computer should recognize it as a removable storage device. just drag and drop...
Alright, thank you! Yes it did come with an adapter. Is there anyway to copy large files through activesync?
you should be able to.. but with my experience it just takes forever... i copied my iguidance map for a friend one time and its 600meg... took 30 minutes to complete. I only copy large files via the adapter nowadays
Yeah, I don't mind waiting 15-30 minutes, it's just that it resets itself and I have no idea if I can ever get it on my phone via activesync.
Edit: I'm trying a different method, right clicking the file and going to send to.. then selecting device, then they prompt me to choose the destination within the device, so far so good. I'll edit again if it's successful or not.
SUCCESS!!
WM5Storage
I use WM5Storage instead, for large files. Works better and faster, than ActiveSync.

usb thumb drive instead of PC?

I tried searching to see if this has already been discussed, but like all vBulletin forums, the search function rejected USB and Pen (as in pen drive) and a few other essential but three-letter words. So I found zero.
I have a 4 GB USB U3 thumb drive that I always carry with me--until I lose it, that is. I would like to load it up activesync (or not--whatever works) and a whole bunch of files I want to install on my HTC Touch Pro (AT&T Fuze). I have a short cable with a male mini USB connector at one end and a female regular-sized USB connector on the other (so I can slip the male USB thumb drive connector into the cable and thence connect it to my TouchPro).
I'm not sure whether this will work, but it seems like it should. This way, I can carry with me all of my files-to-be-installed and work on customizing my fuze anytime, anywhere. I don't want to store the installation files on my micro SD card because that wee thing holds soooo very little. (i have a 32 GB F card and a 32 GB SD card in my iP 211.)
For starters, I can't even figure out how to install Windows Mobile Device Center on the thumb drive--the process keeps wanting to mess with the AS/Winmobile Device Center already istalled (and used for another WM device).
Maybe there's a way to do with without AS or the Device Center. That's fine with me. All I care about is having access to the many, many apps I have waiting on the flash drive.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Sandra
Im no expert, but I dont think many devices have the capability for being hosts, meaning they cant have external memory devices attach except through the supplied card slot.
There are a couple out there which can handle it, but they normally come with a usb port built in. Otherwise I doubt its possible. I dont think its one of those things which can be programmed. Of course, I could be entirely wrong about it.
Edit: Ok, im completely wrong about it. I just found a web page through google saying that many devices with wm on dating back to Pocket PC 2002 do in fact have the ability to do it.
My bad. lol

What size do you have? They are currently available up to 16 gig, and 32 is coming. I keep all my cabs on my Sandisk 16. As for USB host, see the post above with the link to the thread. The chipset does not appear to support it. BTW, if you do a search on "USB host", you will find the thread.
I'm about to follow those links you guys recommended, but I wanted to say a quick thanks to you all. I didn't know anything about USB hosting, etc, and it's a whole lot easier to think anything is possible if you don't know anything than if you are well-educated. (OTOH, I suppose that that knowing might also inhibit experimenting which means you don't pursue new ideas. Hence the box we have to think outside of.)
Thanks again,
Sandra
I'd recommend a Trio adapter: Trio is not a brand name, just a mechanical name they have given this adapter. I had one made by A-Data and its awesome.
The adapter itself is an SD card that accepts a MicroSD on the side. However, the neat part is the fact that you can remove a piece and voila! you have a USB stick.
http://memoryworld.com/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=14&products_id=386 is the first hit from google. I bought mine from Newegg way back in the day. Sadly it was ran over when my phone was. The MicroSD card was good, but the adapter died. I am saving up to get the new SDHC version and a 16GB MicroSD card.
BE ADVISED: there are similar products out there called DUAL adapters: the memory is non removable in those. What that means is that there is no MicroSD card that comes out.
Enjoy!

Cannot transfer my Files!!

Sorry if this has been posted before, i did have a quick look around and found nothing!
Anyways, i just got my HTC Wildfire! Happy with it, but so far i have a slight problem! When i connect my phone to PC, the Pc recognizes it as "portable hard drive" which has been similar to most other HTC phones i have had in the past!
Now when i try to open the "Removable Disk D" as my pc named it, the PC belives it's a Disc Drive for some strange reason. Also i have right clicked and opend the folder as a portable device but when i try to transfer my music into this window it tells me "The device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected" which it hasn't!!
Very confusing as i've never had or heard of this problem in the past!
Can anyone offer some advice?!
Try formatting your SD card in the Settings >> Sd Storage menu.
remove the sd card and try placing it into your computer. See if reads it. You may need an sd card adapter. If this works then try it from your phone again, try switching to charge only mode then to mount/removable drive. Also try a different usb port on your computer, see if that helps, good luck...

Hello, i had the same problem. go to settings-applications-development-then tick usb debugging and your sorted also make sure you select allow third party apps.

[Q] Tablet is erasing data from USB devices

I think my A500 is erasing data from my external USB, I have noticed this twice.
The first was a 8gb stick - I put music on the USB from my PC, then put the USB in my tablet and played the files. The next time I went to use the USB, the tablet wouldnt recognise it. I put the USB in the PC and the PC didnt recognise it either.
Similar thing happened to my external hard drive (Seagate 500GB) - however I can see the drive and the folders that I had are still there, but there are no files (pictures/movies/music).
Any ideas? I have Acer looking into it.
I don't think that it is actually erasing it...
I have had some curious problems. I used to be able to use an external usb stick and move files back and forth. When I first got the tablet,I used the usb to test my 2tb drive and it worked. When Iplugged the drive into the computer again I was surprised to see nothing there!!! But then I got the message on Windows to fix the file system and it was ok after that.
I no longer use the external drive but I would like to see some answers here.

[Q] Seeing cards on PC

So I noticed that my sd card didn't want to show up on my PC. Or one of them at least. It turned out that the one I could see on my PC was the emmc card, and not the external. It wasn't too big a deal really. As I was fooling around, I installed a new driver (as part of installing theADB/SDK stuff) and then all of a sudden, the cards were reversed. I could see my external card, but not the emmc card. At one point, I swear i could access both cards on my PC. What can I do to remedy this situation so I can access both cards?

Tell us more. What version of software are you running? Stock, CM7, CM9, CM10 or something else? What version of software on PC? Windows, Linux, Mac? Do two drives show up but only one displays anything? Or just one drive? Are they drive letters or under other devices? And you are talking about plugging the USB cable in, not putting chip in card reader?
Thanks. Sorry for the lack of info. I am running CM7.2, and looking for the sd cards through windows 7. Honestly, I am not sure I have this same problem on my home laptop, but definately on my work laptop. Both drives show up, usually as E: and F:, but when I click one of them, it says "please insert disk into removeable disk f:"
Does that help?

Yes that helps. The problem is you are not activating the USB connection. You need to pull up the notification area and you will see a selection for turning on computer access. Until you do that the drives are not active on the PC.
Another way to do it is to use the app NookColorUMS. You can get it on my tips thread linked in my signature. See item B7 in my second post of that thread. That app lets you select whatever partition you want to populate the drives on the PC.
