Will Sprint / HTC release an official Ginger Bread / Sense 2.1 ROM? - EVO 4G General

Is it even in their roadmap?
Last year, when they released the Evo, official news of Froyo was released shortly after.
But, I haven't heard anything official about Ginger Bread?
Maybe they are too busy working on the Evo 2 and maybe they are saving those for the Evo 2 so that we all can upgrade?
Speaking of Evo 2, it's March already and still no news leaks about an Evo 2?

I doubt it...I usually see htc phones get one big update and that's it. They want you to buy the the next latest and greatest htc phone when it comes out.

We are gtting the evo tab, evo 3d and nexus s 4g.
The EVO 2 was just something started by the community... who knows if it will ever actually happen.
About GB, I don't think anyone has received an update to it besides Devs phones. Some phones are gonna have it on launch...
If the EVO does get it, I kinda feel like it will be later.

Of course they will. There's already a leak out of the one for the Desire here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=983847. If they get, we'll get it either way.

I hope evo 3d comes with 4g

50% on official release for evo
99% on custom ROM... so I am good.

True! If the "Evo 2" gets GB + Sense 2.1, it should be even easier for XDA devs to port and have Wimax working.

Take a look, Hopefully we get Froyo soon!

I just read this and so I'm hoping we get Froyo soon too. Hopefully we will.

We should definitely be getting it on the EVO... the only question is how soon???

Correct me if I'm wrong but the Desire and Legend do not have Sense UI, which means it's a straightforward port.
If you've played with any of the 2.1 ROMs with JIT you would know that JIT does not work with Sense. Froyo - JIT = FAIL. Thus a froyo port for sense devices could be a little further away than you would hope.
Just wait for the evo kernel source to be released and we will have a complete badass froyo rom for evo, minus the sense (which I've learned to live without already.)

Correction....the Desire and Legend do have the SenseUI. The Nexus is stock, Vanilla Android.

Both Desire and Legend are running on Sense UI. The Only HTC (Android) device that I know that doesn't run on Sense is The Nexus One.
The key is the Desire and Legend aren't locked to carriers, and don't have to go through the US carrier dance whenever they want to release an update.
If you read the article and then jump to the Adobe announcement..."explicitly mentioned several devices that will be getting Android 2.2 sometime down the line to take advantage of Flash Mobile 10.1 (it will be heading out of beta and into a final release the moment Froyo is available). The Google Nexus One, HTC Desire, HTC EVO 4G, Motorola Droid/Milestone, and the HTC Droid Incredible are all of the obvious candidates they mentioned,"
My hunch is that we will see 2.2 drop with some fixes for things seen in the first release of the EVO (30 fps, screen capacitance, etc.). If that's true, we will see 2.2 sooner rather than later.

That would be a very beautiful thing if you are right. They would be killing multiple birds with one stone then. Almost seems to logical for htc and sprint though so i doubt this will be the case
Things needed for a fully working Froyo Build on the EVO
1 2.6.32 kernel source with drivers for the EVO. (Not Available)
2 Evo Vendor Files needed for Froyo source (Not Available)
3 Froyo Source

HTC has said that the 30fps issue is hardware related and will not be fixed, so if it somehow gets magically fixed the same time they push Froyo I will be ecstatic.

If the LCD is running off of the MDDI interface, there is no way to fix it. MDDI 1.1 has a 30hz limitation. End of story.
Doesn't it stand to reason that HTC must at least wait for google to finish Froyo before HTC can release it? Perhaps HTC is able to begin designing their Sense UI while awaiting a final build of Froyo, but I doubt they'd release 2.2 for their devices based upon a beta-build of Froyo.
I certainly hope that we see an official HTC Froyo release asap, though once it's available I will wait to see what the XDA community is able to do to preserve root, and eagerly await some optimized ROMs based on an official release of Froyo.
In the meantime, I love my Evo and am enjoying it thoroughly. I just wish we'd get some 4G down here in the big-easy.
Battery issues aside, I picked up one of the chinese battery/charger bundles on ebay for $11 shipped. I don't mind carrying 2 spare (albeit, probably lower mAH) batteries for extended weekend excursions.

Froyo Tomorrow?

Froyo 2.2 Coming Soon as per Sprint!
Sprint expects to launch Android 2.2 in near future.
As work on finalizing the software is under way, Sprint expects to launch Android 2.2 in the near future. It also will be available as an upgrade on the recently launched HTC EVO 4G.
With the Android 2.2 upgrade, customers can expect improvements to include the following benefits: updates to user interface, improved EAS Support, improved browser performance, including Flash 10x Support, voice dialing over Bluetooth and application storage on external memory.

Woo hoo! That means HTC is done with it and Sprint is finalizing it, it seems.

Very nice.
Yup finalizing hopefully means that its done and just tweaks left. I would expect to get it some time in July.
Awesome! I wonder who will release it first though, Sprint or the devs at XDA
I expected something like this as Fridays the return deadline for the first wave of Evo buyers.
Smart would be to actually HAVE Froyo out a few days before that date...like maybe in Monday expected OTA?!....as the effects are significant with Froyo.
Voice control via Bluetooth....FINALLY

HTC works fast . A Google developer said that it would take even less time to implement Sense into Froyo 2.2 since it was mainly native code that implemented into froyo. Or something like that.
As much of a naysayer as I'm going to come off as, experience (while limited) makes me think closer to end of August or early September. There's no ETA ("soon" is prety vague) and I remember how long it took to get an OS update for the Hero. That coupled with the fact that HTC hasn't released the source code to the current version (much less the new version being promised) makes me think "Soon" will be a few months (which *would* be fast for them )
yea if we set our expectations super low we can't be disappointed am i right ?

At least we won't have to wait on Sprint to fumble with a Hero and Moment version, as per their Twitter:
HTC EVO will be updated to Android 2.2; Samsung Moment & HTC Hero will not. Future devices launching w/ 2.1 will be also be updated to 2.2.

I think froyo is finalized at this point. I really doubt that they meant it like that. I'm going to bet Sprint wants to beat Moto X to the punch. So it will be out some time in July.

Gingerbread coming today? It's still pinging

The big ol' unsourced, unconfirmed, who-knows-if-it's-true rumor of the past week or so has been that Android 2.3 -- Gingerbread -- will be announced/released/something today. It's just about lunchtime, and no sign of anything sweet yet -- though as you can see from the Google analytics above, it looks like it's still pinging around out there.
Will we see it today? Dunno. Will we see it tomorrow? Dunno. Are our fingers crossed? Absofrigginlutely.
http://www.androidcentral.com/gingerbread-coming-today-its-still-pinging
YES PLEASE !
I'm excited to see how it is, no fingers crossed since I'll be waiting for Sprint to push it .
Cyanogenmod will push it before sprint. Our evos are sense devices, so it will take htc some time to get sense on it and sprint.... luckily we have cyanogen

Remember the great modders here beat HTC to releasing 2.2 with sense here! I really wouldn't doubt they won't do it with 2.3 also.
I don't think it is coming out today. Wouldn't the employees release it during their normal shift hours 7-3 or whatever. That is just my thought lol I think they will release it tomorrow when apple releases their upgrades ios 4.2

you wont see a 2.3 with "sense" for a while. HTC is too busy pushing the new "sense" out. U may get a 2.3 "sense" leak by Feb. or March.
Man i wish it came out yesterday :|. Well let's hope its well worth the wait.
oh well for that!! lol.
wouldve been nice if they at least gave us a teaser screenshot or a bit of information to hold us over.. dang..
I don't know why people always get so down on HTC so far they have been great with pushing updates. If an update is coming I don't think it will take 3 to 4 months. Some thought Froyo was going to take a long time too and we got it on a few weeks. If your going to speculate how about speculating that the cup is half full.
From watching all of the handset manufacturers out there HTC is by far and away the fastest to provide updates to their phones.
Samsung still doesn't have 2.2 and Motorola isn't that fast either.
Is there anywhere there is a guarantee that the EVO will be getting the next update?
My guess is yes mainly because it is still Sprint's best Android phone.

Software noise cancellation on the Epic 4G when it gets Gingerbread?

I was just thinking, the Nexus S also has one microphone and apparently uses software noise cancellation. Do you think that all of the Galaxy S variants (including the Epic) will get software noise cancellation?
It's a minor thing, but it would be nice to have. So far, I think that apart from near-field communication (unless we're in for a VERY pleasant surprise), there's nothing else that we won't get with Gingerbread.
That would be a nice update but I doubt we getting gingerbread

Look how long it took for us to get froyo - about six months from release and we still don't "officially" have it yet. In six months from Gingerbread's release, Samsung and Sprint will have another flagship phone that probably won't have Gingerbread either, just like the Epic didn't have Froyo even though it had been out for 2 months on release. You think the Epic's going to get Gingerbread before whatever the new flagship is in six months?
Most phones these days only get one official software update and that's it... if we do get GB, it's going to have to be a leaked hack from the Nexus S.

That's not exactly true. Most phones these days get one Android point release update, but still get several official incremental updates. We have already had 2 ota updates for the Epic. FroYo will be the third update we get. (Assuming the whole leapfrog to gingerbread thing isn't happening)

I've got to disagree with this to a point. Unless sprint rolls out a hell of a 4g map next year - and a Tegra 4g phone - I think the epic holds supreme for at least another 5 months. Which should be about right for us to get GingerBread officially. Since the Nexus S is the new Dev phone, they have around a year till the next one is released so the specs should hold up to all versions for the next year or so. And really, the Nexus S isn't any greater than our phone spec wise. I really don't for see Sammy overshadowing the supreme dev device with something newer and better over the next 7 months --- 12 months.

The phone has only been out since the end of August. So technically, its only been out for 3 months: September, October, November, and part of December. That said, Samsung did promise November I think it was and we have yet to see froyo.

HTC is much more reliable when it comes to updates, although the fact that froyo was not given to the Hero makes me nervous that phones like the Evo will get Honeycomb.
Going back on point, it seems that barring the release of a Tegra 2 phone, or a phone with a 720p screen, which would overshadow this generation of phones the way that the Nexus One did to the HTC Hero/Droid generation, this phone is likely to remain dominant for some time. Lets hope that we get noise cancellation and that this phone is pushed to its full potential.
