[Q] facebook widget crashing for anyone else? - Xoom General

opening the app works, but as soon as i add the widget to a screen it FCs
this happening to anyone else?

Yes. I use the pulse widget for my facebook updates. Its better anyway in my opinion.

I havent used the facebook app since i got the xoom. I just load it up in the browser and it has full functionality just like my pc. so I dont even see the need to use the app or the widget. I am sure it is not optimized for tablets as well. FB said they arent going to design for tablets because they dont consider them portable, mobile devices. so you are prob stuck with the non functioning widget for now.

Yup. Known issues. Be sure to report it

Yes -- the Facebook app works, though it's still formatted for a phone, but the widget does not. I think Facebook is still working at updating their app for Honeycomb, so I expect they will either make the widget work or get rid of it. In the meantime, it just crashes like you said.

Its a known issue because its not optimized for honeycomb. Only use optimized apps if you want to use Widgets.

Sorry for zombifying the thread, but after Facebook never getting off their butts to fix it, some dev made a facebook widget for honeycomb - seems pretty nice, I grabbed it and it uses the stacked card widget style to display posts, with themes and such, click to jump to the post and stuff. Simple and nice.

[THINK TANK] Facebook adobe air?

http://github.com/jubishop/Facebook-for-Adobe-AIR
Source code for Facebook client for Adobe Air
We have air for Froyo now.
Is it possible to compile into android air apk for a GOOD Facebook client?
For the love of God, please.
technically if it were developed using adobe's software tools and is sourced for AIR it shouldn't be hard to port in to an .apk i guess we shall see...
Have you actually tried Facebook for Air? It's just a news feed and status bar. No other features. It is worse than Android Facebook.
Plus, AIR apps must be optimized for mobile. This one wouldn't be too hard to optimize if you have all the code, but it isn't just BOOM throw it into Flash CS5 and BOOM export to APK.
i was really hoping for something good out of this...facebook for android is downright HORRIBLE. I don't understand why the iphone version has not been put to use on android, considering there are more android running devices than ios.
Well, from the other apps I have converted, this should be easy.. will report back soon!
-edit
not sure if this will work as is, with the popup to login and all.. but I will try
Thanks dg

In the past few months, the facebook for android app has gotten infinitely better. It's almost on par with the iphone version now. What is it that you all feel is missing that would be remedied with this version? Just curious.

The fact that when you get a notification it takes you to the mobile site is a big issue, unless I'm missing something. That just seems like they got lazy in their design because you can view all of your updates manually. Also a lack of IM feature also kind of sucks. It's got a nice look to it, but the iphone facebook app is much better.

cant tag them either
can't get push notifications either. you have to keep refreshing your app.
if you click the "messages" tab too quickly and pick a thread you were already messaging someone in, it shows up blank and you have to restart facebook... sooo frustrating
My biggest gripes are no push notifications, no tagging, no picture commenting, no liking statuses, and no "places" functionality.

i think facebook is just doomed for android lol
The biggest gripe I have is previously on my Dream(G1 for AT&T Canada) they ported the nexus facebook app over- which is the same app with a few more features. They had the ability to Sync your pictures/updates with contacts in your phone. It worked like the official twitter app works. On our phone its just plane broken. If you uninstall-reinstall the app and go through the setup it will give you a "finish" button after signing in the first time. If you hit your back button on the touchpad you will see the contact sync. Sad thing though is its just broke. If you Go to your accounts sync in settings you will see the SNS setings up top then the Facebook down below your Gmail. If you click on it though nothing happens- on my Dream it went back into the facebook app's sync settings.
I also agree with the other points people have brought up on no comments on pics etc. The app will eventually be updated for the Galaxy but until then we just have to live with crap. I decompiled the app back in the day and wanted to modify it a little bit but never got around to actually doing it. If I was to modify the Official Android app, would this violate copyrights? Is it based under GNU licensing? I have seen "Colored" versions of the Official app in the market and wondered if they were violating terms by selling a black version of the exact same app? Anyone care to shed some light?
Sorry to go off topic but BOOMER

I just tested this on my Captivate running Cog 2.2B7 with no issues. I can see all the profile pics from FB in my contact list. When I open the FB app I can "like" wall posts and comment on pictures.

So youre telling me you see this: (pictures are in order according to my post on how to get there)
http://wtfokc.com/sef****/0.pnghttp://wtfokc.com/sef****/2.pnghttp://wtfokc.com/sef****/3.png
This is what happens on my Cog2.2 B7. I reinstalled fresh, get the first sign in, then I get "Finish". If you hit your back button you then get the Sync options. This function however doesnt work for me and hasnt on any of the Rom's Ive tried so far on teh captivate. I have read a lot on it and it appears to be a problem on all the Galaxy devices. If yours is working, I'd like to know how?
Only thing I can think is you have your SNS settings setup? Those are the ones in Account/Sync options at the Top -> Facebook, Myspace, Twitter. If so, they will auto sync pictures and junk for you- however it loses links very often- or did for me in previous versions of cog. I would get wall posts and pics in my contacts.. then next day I'd only get twitter, if I got any at all. Also my contacts would lose thier pictures and wouldnt let me re-add or associate them again. I would try over and over to reconnect the contacts to FB and couldnt unless I totally removed the account and reset it. This hap'd multiple time for me. It was rather craptastic syncing and aggravating..so I stopped using the built in SNS accounts all together and just use the official apps now. Only downfall is Facebook's sync doesnt work, twitter's however does.

App Idea - Any dev feel free to take this

Someone please take this idea. Charge money for it, make it for free- it doesn't matter to me. What I cannot believe has never been made is a chat widget. Just imagine the Handscent widget but for gtalk/aim/msn/yahoo.
I'm so surprised it hasn't been made. I would actually pay for this app. Anyone interested in developing it?
Sounds like a potential battery drainer. But it's a great idea.

Meebo? imo instant messenger? eBuddy Messenger?
Don't know if thats exactly what youre looking for.
I think he is looking for a homescreen widget that updates every user defined time and allows the person to chat via MSN, Facebook, ect. ect. directly from the homescreen. Sounds like a great idea.
Edit:
This would most likely drain a lot of battery very quickly because the point of chat is to recieve messages instanly, hence INSTANT messenger. To make this into a widget the developer would have to set the widgets onUpdate() method to update every second or less to make it seem instant. Now a work around would be to have the user set the desired time to say 5 seconds or 10 seconds. Doing that would seem "instant" but you could notice some signifigant lag in recieve messages if you set the update time parameters to high, say 30 - 90 seconds.

Having it refresh once a minute wouldn't be bad. Would a dev be able to try this? These guys are smarter than I am, I'm sure someone could find a way to make it happen and not kill battery life.

Trillian for android has a widget, really? I tried beta when it first came out. Are you sure it has a widget?
Trillian doesn't have a widget! Bah, you got my hopes up.
Well, Trillian does have an API, not sure if this is true for the Java/Android version of their client just yet. However, if they do support it on Android, there is nothing to stop someone writing a plugin that communicates with a widget ;-)

Well not a widget but a app. I have it installed now on my evo. Works like all other messaging apps on android, just no widget option.
edit: Sorry when I read your post I just read "chat" lol.

[Q] Multiple accounts/ parental control

Is there any way of having this ,I want my daughters to be able to use it but I want to set some content control etc
LEEDROID GINGERBREAD
DESIRE HD using XDA PREMIUM
I dont think Android is designed with multiple accounts in mind. You can have multipe google accounts but not multiple "master" accounts.
You can understand this not being implemented for mobile phones as they are more personal than tablets. I would hope that google look at implementing it at some stage.
Enterproid seem to be making an app for this very purpose though. Not sure when it will be released.

I was wondering if there was a way to use a combination of hidden apps and a password/locked homescreen. Basically you could have one. I'd like to have one homescreen with all my mail and calendar widgets, but be able to keep it out general homescreen rotation. Other homescreens would be set up that were relatively childproof.
Has anyone heard of a locking homescreens independently?

Regina 3d launcher has something like this. Works fine on gingerbread but I haven't tried it on honeycomb.
Had similar problems with my kids and their android phones and never really found a suitable solution.

Still looking. I've tried to DL Regina, but haven't had much luck. The launcher installed, but only showed up with froyo launcher switcher. It only works in portrait mode, which isn't very nice on my Adam. Also, it's no longer available on the market, although the other pieces of the suite are.
I wish someone would take this on in some of the popular tablet launchers. hint, hint....

New Calendar with TW update

I got the TW update this morning, and with it came a new calendar app. I don't like it. I think the stock HC 3.1 calendar app was much nicer. Any way to get it back?
I saw a lot of people getting hyped for this update, but honestly I'm not sure I like it much at all. The replacement for the taskbar popup, where you can see your wifi network, settings button, etc, isn't all that great. It's too big, and I can't click on the wifi network name anymore which would jump me right to the wifi part of settings. Annoying.
I'd be happy with getting the old calendar app back, and short of that would be interested in rolling back to the previous version if possible.
I totally agree. I hate the new calendar app and desperately want to switch back to the old version. I haven't figured out how to do it yet.
Also, the color change of the bottom menu bar from black to gray is really bothering me for some reason.
That's what you guys get I saw all this bull**** from reviews on youtube and I decided not to update
I like the new calendar app just fine. To each his own I guess.
I agree. The skinned apps stink overall. The samsung apps social hub and photo editor are pretty good. I might just flash back.
The stock google calendar is hw accelerated. You can tell Samsung did not use hw acceleration for their calendar. Its not as smooth when you scroll around. Disappointing.
been searching whole xda and found 2 links to the stock honeycomb.apk from the NOOK section. but these are for honeycomb 3.0, didnt try it yet.
any dev who has the stock calendar.apk for honeycomb 3.1?
seems more users are having problems with getting the stock calender back while having touchwiz UX.
Bumpity bump bump bump bumpy bump....
Isn't there a way to download this apk from Google directly? Dump from a Xoom rom?
I've even *****ed at @SamsungSupport for the poor Calendar implementation. The TW "improvement" is about as worthless as keeping your calendar on a napkin.

App/Widget like blinkfeed

Hey is there a widget that incorporates all my social media like blinkfeed does. Id like to be able to swipe left on my home screen and it all appears like the way it does on the HTC one.
