[Q] Hspa+ deployed? - Atrix 4G General

My phone's speed through the speedtest.net app at my home got better yesterday. A LOT better. I'm now reliably getting 3.5Mbits minimum, and got over 5 (5.11 was highest) 3 times. The ping is also good, ~125ms. I can find no explanation for these great scores other than "4"g finally being deployed. Anyone else getting better results?
For the record, the best score I ever got at home before this was 2.2Mbits.
upload still sucks... 300Kbits

nothing has changed for me..still paltry download and embarrassing upload.

Are you sure that you weren't accidentally connected to wifi? Well, then again, that wouldn't explain the 300kbps

my area nw of detroit is hit or miss. sometimes i see 5mb speeds while other times i can barely break 400kb.
overall, my atrix works much better/fasterr than my att n1...

I was getting 2.5-3.0 Mbps when I got it and I live in a very small city. Just tested right now and got 3.5 Mbps and then 3.1 Mbps.

You can see the 4G coverage map at att.com/network
So far I see 4G released in greater Los Angeles, Bay area, "northern California" (Santa Rosa area), greater Dallas, Houston, Chicago, Buffalo, Providence (RI), Boston, Baltimore, Charlotte, and Puerto Rico.

I'm about an hour and change away from boston, and I see decent speeds. Faster than my verizon phone.
I'll be in boston next weekend for pax east, I'm pretty excited to see what kind of speeds I'm going to get.

I've always gotten 3mbs down and 300kbs up.

My speeds tested with the speedtest app in Portland, OR (Vancouver, WA) which automatically tests from a server in Iowa (guess that's AT&T's connection point?). Anyways, not the speeds I expect, but I can live with them.

For the record, I was in Santa Rosa, CA (one of their claimed rolled-out locations) for the past week. When downtown, I had great speeds. If you travel 1-2 miles away from downtown, coverage is hit or miss.
I was there for a week testing it and couldn't have been more frustrated. Constantly dropped calls because it kept switching between networks. I wanted a way to force it to stay on Edge while I was there so I could competently conduct business, but both AT&T and Motorola assured me that there was no way to force it to stay on Edge, as that feature was purposely disabled in the phone's settings.
My iPhone had that function and it came in handy when in bad areas. WTF?!
[edit]
Also, these speed tests in Vancouver, WA (Portland metro area) were tested now. Also, I spoke to 3 AT&T reps + 4 Motorola reps while I was in Santa Rosa, CA. As if it matters, but tracking the help from these companies is important at this stage I think

I noticed the same thing this morning. Im getting 4Mbps+ down, but still .3 up. Im just outside Chicago

Maybe this is a good sign of things to come?

I can confirm that at the moment I am getting 3.4Mbps and that with 4 bars not 5 but yeah the upload still sucks

Huh. If this really has been deployed, maybe I should replace my Cingular SIM...

Just had 2 bars, ~200ms 3.4 down, .39 up

I'm using the wireless tethering mod in the Dev section. The one where you need the SQLite editor and root explorer.
EDIT: I actually hit 4.06 down, and 0.95 up Haven't hit those speeds since then, but my downloads are looking far better (2 mbps+ down, a little more than .3 up) compared to when I got the phone. (Was lucky to hit 1.5 mbps down, and .2 up)

FWIW, I was sitting in Chicago's Midway airport yesterday (remember, Chicago is a "4G" city based on ATT's map). Well, I was consistently hitting 4.0 - 4.5 Mbps down and 300 kbps up while in Chicago on my Atrix. Latency was around 120 ms IIRC. This was very promising to see.
This morning, I'm back to ~2 Mbps down and ~150 kbps up in Denver (where "4G" is not deployed)

Current Sprint customers: What speeds are you seeing on Sprint EVDO?

I have the EVO that was given out at the Google I/O so it is my first time with Sprint. It is one hell of a device.
I ran some speed tests all over the SF Bay Area and the EVDO speeds are total crap. Can't really call it 3G.
I get between 250Kbps - 700Kbps where the upper end is RARELY achieved . 90% of the time i see 300Kbps...
Are these typical Sprint speeds on 3G? or is there something wrong with radio on the EVO? (I am not sure if the firmware that is currently on the device will be the shipping firmware as some things are missing like the QIK video conf and TV OUT settings/app).
When i get 4G (rarely) the speeds are great (5Mbps down).
Curious what other Sprint customers are seeing on 3g.
San Francisco... specifically in the Outer Mission district... show on average 1700kbps down and 600kbps up.
I only get that 300kbps you're talking about when it is midday and my coverage bars only show one or two. But that's rare.

They really aren't...I don't understand why people think sprint has a crappy 3G network, theirs is very comparable to verizon with speeds, but about halfish the size, maybe a bit more than that. Coverage with sprint is WAY better than at&t and t-mobile, speeds are a bit slower but not enough to cause a heart attack or anything...
check the sig... tether from my house
I get about 1.1Mbps down / 300Kbps up from my Palm Pre around Charlotte. Pretty stable as long as I have at least one bar. The Pre is one of the worst phones I have had for reception though so...
I get 700-1200kbps in good service on 3G. I can't wait to test out 4G.
Here in Boston I get between 1.6mb to 2.1mb constantly.

I dont know SF very well but in t mobiles coverage and speed defense.. on my HD2 i got 4.3Mbps.. i was with my son outside the science museum. perfect 3g coverage.. home in NYC i get upwards of 5mbps. daytime-afternoon goes down to about 3.2Mbps. i came to T mobile from sprint. left sprint when hd2 came out. i must say t mobile is smashing sprint with coverage and speeds for me. with sprint i never got over 2.7Mbps no matter where i went. If you look at the maps, sprint really does have a much larger 3G network than t-mobile, it all depends on where you are though to be honest. T-mobile is definitely faster though, never said it wasn't, i was specifically talking about SIZE not SPEED.
1000-1500 average in Denver and St. Louis.
Used to be higher last year, but network either slowed or more users. Not quite sure.

This is common in the San Francisco Bay Area - all the way from Pacifica where I work to San Jose. Morgan Hill/Gilroy (deep South Bay) is where Sprint needs to turn up the coverage. The best I've averaged is 600kbps down there.

In Philadelphia I get between 600 and 1200 kbps d/l during peak and offpeak respectively. While I was in Las Vegas last week I could not get better than about 500 kbps d/l so I think 3g can be pretty variable. Good to hear you are getting nice 4G speeds.
Sprint Hero using the FCC speed test app:
Downtown Nashville, TN
2.03 Mbps down
566 kbps up
337 latency
For some reason the speed test app does not work with 2.1 on my hero. Not that I care, because I will have an EVO in my hands very soon!
Speed test comparison does not mean anything
unless you state what browser and what test you used. There can be a huge difference in results from browser to browser and test site to test site. With Skyfire I get 14053 Kbps down and 1816 up. Same test with Opera 3587 down and 890 up. Same test with uZard 14586 kbps down, 12053 kbps up. Using Brighthouse speed test. Huge difference. Opera mini will not run the flash test on Brighthouse.

And you think you have bad 4G speeds...

Sprint says they have 4G in Boise, ID and the surrounding area including Nampa, which is where I live (About 20 mi. from Boise). I've been running speed test on 3g and 4g everywhere I go. I'm lucky if I even have the dot on 4G unless I'm in a sprint store or LOS of a tower.
So far, 4G is always half the speed of 3G, almost always. The only time it hasn't been much slower is when I was standing in the sprint store.
On 3G I avg. between 150 to 850 kbps down - 50 to 500ish up.
On 4G I've gotten anywhere from 150 to 3000 kbps down. But anything over 1000 kbps down was when I was standing in the sprint store or within sight of a sprint tower.
Ping is 200 at its low and has been all the way up to 800ms.
As far as which sprint servers I'm connected too, they seem to be anywhere from KS to CA and once in a while in ID or CO.
I don't know about you, but this seems to be wayy slower than what the rest of you are reporting as "slow", sadly. Because at this point, 3g is beating 4g and 3g isn't even close to its capasity. (Got 1.5mpbs down on my iphone 3G)
Wifi works great, 5 down, 1 up even with 0 bars cross the house, by the way.
I love the evo and android, and sprints pricing, but even with millions upon millions of iphones out there, att can somehow keep their speeds up.
I'm almost right there with you. I was driving down I-270 in St. Louis with full 4G bars and I was only getting 1.5 Mbps. I get that through 3G!!! So why am I enduring the pain of this battery life when I got the same speed from my blackberry?
Ok...that's not meant to be answered. I really really really love my Evo, but like any mobile device, it has its flaws.
i have a lot of family in both marsing and nampa, too bad they all have verizon, i myself live in fresno tx and area that is supposedly saturated in 4g according to both clear maps and sprint maps and i am not getting 4g at all, on top on that i one main sprint tower down the street and about 6-7 antennas (repeaters) in fresno, for any small town thats overkill and fresno is small i can get 4g if i walk down the street towards arcola (another small town next door) and in the opposite direction towards houston i get 4g but were i live nothing and the speeds....one 4g test says .65kbps up and 125kbps down
I usually get ~3mbs in st louis. I've had 9mbs bursts too.
Be patient..
I recommend being patient. In my area (where Clear has had a presence for while), as soon as the EVO came out, speeds hit the floor. My 3G was handily beating the 4G speeds I was getting up until a couple of days ago. My guess is that the influx of all these Wimax devices hit their network pretty hard and they're still doing whatever it is they do to bring the speeds back up.
On the brightside, I've gotta give them credit for at least keeping it stable. It may have been slow, but it always seemed to work when I switched to it.
I'm sure if it was AT&T we'd be screwed.

I've only tested 4G through I-55 in Arnold and out in Fenton at Gravois Bluff. Moving I've never hit over 2-2.5mb, and stationary outside the Great Escape theater at Gravois Bluff I hit 3mb once. I have NEVER hit above 3, which is kind of a disappointment. It could just be the fact that Arnold & Fenton are both kinda on the fringe of 4G coverage, but still...
I'll be going into downtown Saturday for the Cardinals game and I'm interested to try it out then actually in the city. Hopefully it's a little better. Sprint, here's your chance to blow my mind with some amazing speeds
P.S. @TeknoJnky DAMN! You're lucky with those 9mb bursts! Thats as fast as my cable connection at home! Jealous...
I test my 4G speed, and it's usually 1/4 of the 3G speed, but i download webpages faster through the browser in 4G, despite the lower bandwidth score. It's a weird phenomenon, but another user on PPCGeeks mentioned the same thing.

tmo US 3g data speeds

so im using a HD2, with the energy rom and tmo just announced that they are rolling out hspa+ in my city (honolulu) so i figured id do a speed test now just to see the difference when they "flip the switches" on 7/21 (my birthday)
so i pull up dsl reports and run the Iphone (bleh)/smartphone speed test choose 3g and........ 126kbps well maybe its a fluke i rerun it and 51kbps WTF!?!?!?!!?!
so i remember mobilespeedtest.com and i try there and..... 134kbps.....starting to get annoyed and when i compare with other tmo subscribers the average is 580~
so my question is is there something i can do to "fix" my speeds? ive got full signal im always showing "H" oh and im using opera 10.0
In Lexington, Ky I get about 400 kbps. In Cincinnati, like 800-900. I just think Tmob's network is really crappy.
hahaha well your crappy is still 4 times faster than me
just odd its SO slow here where hspa+ is going live in a week
before TMO threw the HSPA+ switch here in Tampa, i regularly saw 600-800kbps download speeds. Now with HSPA+ it seems to average about 3mbps-4mbps and Ive seen it reach as high as 5.5mbps.
I just got through with a road trip from Tampa to northern Mississippi where i lost the HSPA+ coverage after leaving Tampa, i saw around a 1mbps in outskirt areas north of Tampa that doesn't have HSPA+ yet, and once we hit the interstate it was GPRS coverage for a majority of the trip with some EDGE coverage here and there. God i forgot how slow GPRS was!
oh i also forgot to mention im using the stock radio rom.....maybe a different radio would improve data speeds?

as i keep walking outdoors my speeds go as high as 1.4 and never went below 400. so when i get to work i figure my speeds will go down as im indoors, wrong i kept getting speeds around 500 tho i didnt see the huge jumps that i did outdoors
We're on the list to have HSPA+ flipped on here in Austin next week, but I'm already starting to see the signs...I can now hit 3-5MB downstream just about anywhere in town.
3mbps-4mbps here in ATL
we are getting an average of about 3mbps-4mbps with HSPA+ in Atlanta, GA

I get 4g in ______ (4g coverage thread)

Lately there have been a lot of people reporting that they have 4g in areas not listed in sprints 4g coverage map. So i want all of you people who do get 4g signal to put what city and state you get 4g in, along with the average speed you get, that way all someone could stumble across this thread see the list and say, "oh man theres 4g there! yay!"
So let me start
I get 3 bars of 4g signal in Anaheim, CA around the knotts berry farm area.
And then ill take yours guys info and put here
4g Coverage
Anaheim, CA (5 down/2.5 up)
San Jose, CA (5 down/2.5 up)
Nampa/Boise, ID (Full speed at sprint store, 2.5 down / 1 up everywhere else)
Lexington, NC (5 down/2.5 up)
Richmond, VA (5 down/2 up)
San Jose, ca full bars 5/2.5
richmond, va
5/2
I get 4G in Nampa/Boise, ID. I get 4G speeds when I'm in the sprint store, other than that, I get 4G speeds that are half the speed of 3G speeds, and the 3G speeds are getting pretty damn close to being dial up speed around here. It really is quite ****ty.
How are you guys getting above 1mbps on upload? I thought Sprint/Clear had capped the upload at 1mbps.

I have no idea about the speeds. I was driving around the whole city(san jose, ca) with my applefanboy friend and i wanted to show off the phone and when he turned the 4g on it got signal. We opened the speedtester and bammm he stop talking about apple stuff.
I thought san jose was on the list for cities coming soon, but this was a fast launch unless is only testing phase.
Lexington,nc 5/2.5
They launched 4G here in Syracuse, NY almost a month ago.
I can't test the speed right now because I live right in the middle of a gap in the 4G coverage, but when out in areas with coverage I was getting speeds just a little faster than 3G in the same area.
Coverage here is horrible, even in the better 4G spots shown on the map I get a poor signal. I've never been able to get over one bar, and that one bar usually drops fast.
EDIT: Was in a 4G area today with a decent signal and got 1.99 Mbps down, and 0.8 Mbps up.
Nashville, TN and several of the surrounding areas.
First off, stop using the speedtest.net app to test speed, it is not accurate! Either use the flash speedtest.net or the HTML testmy.net if you want an accurate reading.
Second.
Denver - Broomfield around Interlocken and at Invesco field and a good 5 mile stretch down the highway.
All of downtown Seattle has excellent 4G
Tacoma, WA has great 4G
Bremerton, WA and Silverdale, WA has great 4G
I get 4G on the Northeast Corridor (Amtrak from NYC to Philly) from Elizabeth to Rahway, NJ.

LOL, I saw that there was 4G during a Rockies game a month ago. My 3G stopped working, (I think the network was overtaxed during the game), and I happened to try 4G and was able to continue using data. Great speed too. Never got around to testing it though...
Also, Tri-Cities (Pasco, WA) has 4G and its official too.
Winston Salem, NC 4./1
Greensboro, NC 3.5/1
High Point, NC 4/1.5
King of Prussia, PA - 3/1.5
Philadelphia, PA - 4/1.7
Where in Richmond are you getting 5 down? I can only get about 3 down max downtown and in the Fan.
I got pretty decent coverage in Chicago.

Very slow Verizon 4G speeds

I live in Virginia Beach, near Norfolk Airport, and at my house, 4G speeds are god-awful slow.
I did some exploring, and eventually got a -64dBm signal..
The speedtest results were absolutely pitiful. Less than 3mbps down, and for some reason, 4mbps up. Should I call Verizon Wireless about this, cause from the looks of it... seems like the 4G tower I'm connected to has very poor backhaul..
Maybe that tower is overloaded?

Psh, if youre upset with that, look at me on simple mobile, the MOST i get on their 3G is about 300kb dl / 100kb ul per second.

I've considered that, but LTE is still newish. Of all places, Virginia Beach, I just have a hard time believing that the speeds here are lower than in NYC because of overloading, cause here, I just doubt that there's THAT MANY people on 4G. And my pings are always less than 100ms whoch further hints the load isn't too high. On top of it all, uploads are 4-6mbps while downloads are now under 2mbps. I'm considering calling Verizon Wireless, but doubt they'd do anything :/

I did, indeed the day it was "officially" turned on (It had been on for weeks before October 20th)
And was pleased to see that my address was in the dark red, not extended lte coverage. Then I got home and made a yukky face at my phone when I saw how slow it was at home and thought "This can't be right..."
Today, I'm noticing much better speeds, I'm guessing they added another T2 line to it, as its still to slow to be a T3 line (I got as fast as 8mbps down, and 4 up, but that was at 4AM LOLOLOL
