Just got my vega and first thought was to root, backup rom and flash. Im used to doing iit with my desire so thought it would be easy!
so i,m using Visionary to root, first temp then perm. Run titamium backup that should root and backed up a couple of apps no problem. Installed rom back up v3. Back starts by reboot and then sits at android out of the box before i have to switch it off after 10 mins or so. I i still try and flash after this (or before if i miss this stage) with new rom, cant open apps or force close and wifi just says error.

Which rom are you trying to flash?
I use the built in applications backup, located in settings/software tool to backup apps, with no problems.
Ive tried the r8 version and one other and ive also used the app backup but wanted to get the whole rom done before a full flash.

Ok so I've done a bit of searching and asking on androidforums but nobody can figure out my an answer to my problem. Alright, first off originally the phone had android 1.5 but when sprint released the 2.1 update I did it. From there, I used regaws tutorial on rooting the official 2.1 release which worked great. Basically I was on a mission at this point, a mission to try out all the 2.1 based custom rims. I had been using the rom manager app for its ability to wipe and flash new roms without even rebooting to recovery. As you are probably aware, to do anything with rom manager, you have to have their clockwork mod recovery flashed, which is simple to do with this app. So one day I wiped and flashed a new rom, aloysius I think, and after it was trying to boot the new rom it gave me some error message and the installation failed. I think at this point I tried to restore my nandroid, which also didn't work, I'm guessing that you have to be using the same recovery you were using when you created the nandroid? No matter what I did from recovery I could not restore my nandroid, as a last ditch effort I did a factory wipe and then rebooted. I didn't think it would reboot at all, honestly I was way scared and thought that I had bricked the phone but after about 5 minutes it finished booting up. Now I don't understand why or how, but when it came to it was quite obvious, I was back at stock 2.1. I immediately look in the app tray for the superuser app and obviously it isn't there, I've been dealing with the phone as is for about a month. A couple of weeks ago I decided to get back to work, sat down at the computer and tried to root it again using the same exact method. After like 5 attempts I get the same problem, I get to the step where command prompt spells out "UNREVOKED" really big but I notice that instead of having a "$" like it shows in the picture I have a "#". At this point the guide instructs you to open the Superuser app on the app tray on the phone, sure enough, I don't have one. I have tried this probably like 7 times all with the same result. I've even tried to install that .6 update to patch whatever remnant of root access I have and go from there as I'm sure the fact I was rooted once and lost it has something to do with my failure. I've tried running RUU's many times as well and always wind up getting an error 171 USB connection error. I havent heard of anyone else having an issue like this. I'm not sure whether I posted this thread in the right place to really get help either so if this needs to be moved to development or whatever don't hesitate. I'd really appreciate anyone trying to figure this out as I am tired of running the slow stock rom but have exhausted virtually every option that I am aware of, PLEASE HELP ME!
I know everyone is probably still reading that book I posted, but once you get to the end lol please gimme some advice, i've tried everything and don't wanna live with the phone as is for the next year....
It's a little hard to read your original post, but I'll do my best to help. From the sound of it you may still have root.
I haven't had to root on stock 2.1 install, so I'm not familiar with the new method. If you get to a bash shell or terminal prompt that is a '#' rather than a '$', you still have root.
You said that you did a factory wipe on the phone. Did you RUU or did you simply wipe through recovery? Are you still able to get to the clockwork recovery?
If you can get back to your modded recovery, you're golden. I would STRONGLY recommend you flash the newest Amon_RA. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4898505&postcount=1
If you can get that far, you should just be able to wipe and flash a new ROM.
have you tried to update your sync/drivers on your computer lately?

Oh well I finally got it all figured out, had to rum the ruu twice back to back whole the phone was still frozen at the bootloader. From there I finally was able to re root it.
So, I've tried following the directions for the "nearly" one-step root, and the process completes, but I get no response when I run the Super app, just a blank screen. Is that normal?
Also, from what I've been able to find, it appears there are no released SBF's for the R2D2, so if I brick my phone, I'm SOL. I don't want to end up with a non-warranted paper-weight, so for now I unrooted it....however...did I do something wrong, and if so can someone fill me in?

which one step? I used the Z4root and had zero issues. Rooted within a minute.
OK, so I did manage to root it using the one-step root, however what ROM manager works on the R2D2? I am trying to use ROM Manager, but when attempting to do a backup, the phone reboots, then I get what appears to be an error, after which the phone boots back up normally. The error is a triangle with an exclamation in it, with the android dude standing next to it.
If I go into manage and restore backups, I have nothing listed, which tells me the backup never worked.
Any ideas?
Also, I was wondering what exactly doing a ROM backup does for me. Does it do a snapshot of the current state of the phone, so if I wanted to rollback any app changes I made, will that be undone?
Just trying to get a feel for what exactly this does for me. I would like to de-blur my phone, and by saying that, I'm not even totally sure what that means. I see a TON of motorola apps in the system/apps folder, but I really don't know what is safe, and not safe, to get rid of.

Super user app is blank until root apps are used.
For now I wouldn't use a ROM manager you need Koush's Bootstrap to be able to do a backup. It's on the market. To use it just tap the Bootstrap button then wait for the success toast (box) and then tap Reboot Recovery and your phone will boot into Clockwork mod. Backup will take an img of the phone as it is at the point where you backed up. To restore if you mess something on a later install but if you can't get into clockwork for some reason you might be out of luck. Because there is no SBF specifically available for the R2D2 D2 but I've heard that the 2.3.20 might unbrick bricked R2D2's but you won' have the same verizon version you have now it'll be a step back.
OK. I do have bootstrap recovery installed and was able to perform a backup.
Also found a link to some of the bloatware you can "safely" remove. I'm still tweaking it....but that being said, what else can you do (i.e. - overclock, etc.)?
You can overclock, install libs and bins that access hardware features locked out by vzw, change roms and themes....yada, yada.....the 2.3.20 sbf is not a step back. The radio update and kernel tweaks for battery life are not in the 2.4.5 system. They had the rom version because some files are different between the two.

Hi I have an HTC LEGEND which I did root and was working great for quite some time with Blayo's rom and then a stripped down version of that.
I was getting ready to sell it and I accidently returned the phone to factory default instead of re-installing the rom through rom manager.
Obviously the rom is still there and super user permissions are still there too, but when I try to reload a rom (or install a new one) it reboots and goes to this screen

What do I need to do to fix it?
nevermind I just re-rooted it and that seemed to fix all the issues.
It looked like the same screen you get when you do the second part of the step2 windows bat on the how to root the legend guide.
Is it possible that you deleted your clockwork mod files from the SD card?
I have a rooted EVO 4G that I rooted with Unrevoked after I got the OTA update to FroYo. I removed a bunch of apps with Titanium that in hindsight I probably should have just froze, as I can't manually install any updates without getting an error message. I believe this is due to the update trying to install to a missing app. If I reinstall the original ROM, is there any way to save the paid apps I have on the phone? Suggestions?
you could with titanium, just hit the apps then backup.

If you want to download the original rom and still remain rooted, download the Stock ODEXED 3.70 rom from the link below and flash it.

Make sure you go into recovery, wipe EVERYTHING in the wipe menu except your SD card and then flash the rom. Afterwards, be patient during the initial boot. When you've booted into your homescreen and signed in with your Google credentials, start the Market app. Your paid apps should be listed under the MY APPS tab.
After you get your device exactly how you want it, reboot into recovery and make a nandroid backup. Get used to doing that each time you make a change to your device. Doing so will allow you to return your device to exactly how it was before the changes were made in case you don't like the changes. All of your apps will be intact as well as your homescreens.

your paid apps, if downloaded from the market, will always show in the market, and you can redownload them from any new rom you flash. they are attached to your google account.
you can use any of multiple backup methods if you want (titanium is my fav too), but your paid apps will always show in the market.
ROM won't flash.

I think that has something to do with the version of recovery u are using.... Try amon ra's beta test version for recovery or if you are more comfortable with clockwork use version 3.0.0. They both work

Old packages are not compatible with the newest version of Clockwork Mod Recovery (3.0+) so you need to downgrade to a 2.x release, which is simple to do via Rom Manager. Or you can find a newer package to use instead. I would suggest going with the 2.x version of CWM Recovery.
Or... you can just grab the latest PC36IMG.zip and throw that on the root of your SD card, then reboot to bootloader by holding volume down while powering on. That'll set everything back to the way it came. Make sure you grab the right PC36IMG.zip that you need before flashing...
Update
Well, now I really get a chance to show my ignorance. When I got to the point that I was getting error message, I panicked as I needed the phone at work the next day. I went with the "reboot now" option in recovery mode not knowing what else to do. The phone rebooted with FroYo installed and still rooted. All the downloaded apps were gone.
One of the main worries I had was I didn't know if I could get out of recovery mode after the wipe without having flashed a new ROM. It appears I was able to.
Also, is there any way to load files to the SD card if I get hung up like again?
I guess the advice I most needed is to download the older version of CWM into ROM Manager, and make a backup immediately, and also once I get all apps reloaded and have the phone tweaked to my liking?
The first thing you should do is boot into recovery and make a nand backup. If you are just learning probably use rom manager and get the paid version. Once you have a backup you should not have any worries. You should be able to access your SD card from recovery.

Anyways so I got CWM 5.5.0.4 running on my 7510 just fine last night. I then did a backup of everything from within CWM 5.5.0.4. Then I went and flashed CM10 Jellybean to see if it worked fine. Went back to CWM and tried restoring back to ICS, to check that too and it worked fine. I want to mention at this point I couldn't get Titanium Backup or ROM Manager working from withint ICS at this point because it kept saying that it couldn't get root access (I rooted my 7510 through the method listed as a guide in the Developers section of this forum), but since I could restore back without a problem to ICS with all my settings intact, I thought I'd give it a try anyways.
I then flashed back to CM10, and upgraded to the newest CWM Touch version 5.8.x.x from within ROM Manager once in CM10. I then decided I wanted to go back to ICS so I tried to restore back to ICS through CWM Touch, and it didn't work. I’ve tried doing an entire normal backup, and then strictly the apps, nothing works. Keeps telling me there’s an error.
What’s the best thing to do? Switch back to 5.5.0.4? Can I do that without turning on USB debug mode? Because I didn’t check this beforehand but I can’t click on Storage in settings and even access USB period, whether it’s to transfer stuff or to turn on USB Debug mode.
Any help would be appreciated! I mainly want to go back because all my apps are setup the way I like in ICS. Unless someone knows away to restore apps properly back without going through CWM, maybe through some app that can read the backup data if that makes any sense?

Easiest way is to go back to the old cwm. The touch ver is a bit uggly according to me. (Personly i run Twrp tocuh recovery. Its nice and sleek. Gives option to compress backupps to. Includes a filemanager to. )
Otherwise if you install clock work mod from gogle play there is an option to restore apps from the backup.

How exactly do I go back to the old CWM? Do I have to enable USB Debugging mode? As I mentioned I can't even do that because it's greyed out for me in CM10.
I dont know why usb debug is incheckable, i'm not a dev. But don't think it's important if you flash cwm via odin.
Use the same method you got cwm the first time.
Easiest is flashing it through odin. I guess you can follow that root guide you used initialy.
Rom manager can restore apps from backupfile. Just go deeper in menus.
