Personal warning I'll also include AppsPlanet into those list if I were you.

Note that, since everyone on Nexus S is presumably running at least Android 2.3, the vulnerability those apps exploited is already patched, rendering the malicious code ineffective. It's only people with older OS versions that need to be concerned. Yet another argument for taking responsibility for software updates out of the hands of manufacturers and carriers.

So, fragmentation actually helps some of us
Google needs to fix this and adopt a similar process like Apple does. I try to be careful when downloading stuff, but there are many, many people out there who are not tech savy and this can be a large problem down the line. Piracy is another issue they need to fix. Has Google ever found a way to stop people from downloading an app, backing it up to SD card or PC, and then requesting a refund? If they haven't, they need to immediately.

there's something along the line in regards to DEV protection about that.
It basically lets you only refund it once! for the lifetime of your Google account
so any app that you refunded once, you will not be able to refund it again the second time
which basically will prevent you from ever upgrading to a new version, even if you did rip them off once.
there are updates to your installed google apps like once a week, or once a day depending on the developers
the worse ones EA for example are aprox once a month upgrades
it's extremely annoying to not be able to update the apps, you always get annoyed about new apps alerts if you don't update.
so i always make sure all my apps are legit, so that i can use the UPDATE ALL button without having to manually update each app independently

wow here we go !

Luckily I don't download every app. Especially those that use the word sexy.

But those are the best ones!

Thanks for the heads up. Thankfully I didn't download any of those. To the point of the android app market becoming like apple, I'd resist that. Freedom is why I stopped using my iPhone and got a nexus s

most of these apps sound like porn anyway so who ever downloaded should have a virus or whatever the case may be. use your computer lol not your precious android.

not all of them, there are many legit apps and "useful" apps that were hacked, and then injected with the trojan, then release back to the market for free
like PewPew for example it's a legit game, but this is a fake version that works too, or too well, as it will download the trojan meanwhile you play the game
in the PewPew case, they didn't even rename the app
many of those other apps are just the same originals but renamed with the added payload inside

Samsung release the source code to us but don't let us change anything.
Or do they just have to release the source code as its GPL?

There is nothing weird about not providing warranty for software that isn't theirs. The hardware is still theirs though, and they should still provide warranty on said hardware.
I have personally encountered issues regarding the same thing with HTC though. In that case, they actually claimed it was the software that damaged the hardware (apparently, HardSPL is bad-ass enough to physically break the digitizer). I had a lawyer look into it, and at least in my country, this practise is illegal - and I would guess the same thing goes for all of EU. However, succesfully fighting it would be much more expensive than the phone is.
Go & buy a DROID/DROID X phone and try hacking its bootloader (which is quite impossible)...
Samsung phones are considered as a picnic in comparison.

I am not complaining about the fact, that Samsung wants to refuse warranty if the device is rooted.
I think the Galaxy S got easier rooted than the Nexus One, since it accepted unsigned update.zips on 2.1 with stock firmware. That was really nice of Samsung in difference to HTC with their two new models..
I'm complaining about the "fact" that it seems as if Samsungs' developers waste their time with develping their ****ty rfs filesystem, different launcher versions for every galaxy model etc.
Cbeck rooted phone just by app's icon?
Next, someone need to change the icon to Angry Birds icon.
Better way to check is by using adb.
adb shell

......
These instructions were intended for Samsung's Tier 1 representatives. you think that they know how to run ADB?...
fr4gg0r - my point is that if Samsung really wanted us to stay away from software modding, they would have acted like Motorola, and encrypted the ass of the sgs.
Yeah they're probably cool with it, obviously they don't want to replace peoples phones for free because of it though.

Which smacks of total authenticity to me...go read some other Samsung documentation, or hell, just wake the phone up from sleep and see:
"Sweep screen to unlock"
LOL didnt realise but you are right! 'sweep'!!
hahaha never though of it!
This is normal practice, and there are PLENTY of good reasons for doing this:
1) Firstly, you'll notice it says "if it causes instability". As root, you have permission to wipe important system files. It's unfair for Samsung to be forced to pay when the problem is entirely your fault.
2) You can wipe /efs easily
3) There have been cases of new kernel drivers bricking devices on PC's (such as an Intel networking adapter in the linux kernel)
4) With root access, you can trash the bootloader with mere commands
5) 3rd party programs suddenly have permission to do all these things, and trojans can trash the system easier.
It's fair to do, and remember, many embedded devices have similar policies.
^ mm it's all pretty obvious stuff. You would hope they don't use this as a reason not to fix hardware faults though.
And, sweep does *sort of* make sense.
lol samsung is a bunch of tards

This announcement is news? Seriously? Everyone seriously thought that manufacturers were cool with you rooting the phone and getting access to the system files and stuff?

If they had made a fully functional phone then i guess we don't have to screw around with it. The problem was created by them guess the guys here are just rooting their phone and adding fixes to make it usable. I for one would have smashed my phone if not for fixes offered in this forum.

[Help] Why people don't like my word game?

I have created a word game called Anagram Online. But the download number is quite bad. Can't understand why people don't like my game. From my previous experience, it only take a few days to pass 1,000 download number.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.sillycube.android.anagramonline
Is it too boring? Too stupid? The graphic is not attractive? How do you think of my game?

Might work on the graphics a bit but overall is looks OK. I think maybe it's just that you're getting your first taste of what download numbers look like for crowded genre/market that already have dominating apps in them (words with friends, etc).
It's hard to stand out in the crowd. Do you do any promotion?
My previous game performs much better than this one. I have published 3 games already. This is the first multi-player game we tried to test the market. Unfortunately the result cannot reveal our hard work.
We have sent press release to different blogs. Also distribute the game to different 3rd party app stores. Just want to see if the game have any obvious defects before going into real-money advertising campaign.

READ PHONE STATE AND IDENTITY
Allows the application to access the phone features of the device. An application with this permission can determine the phone number and serial number of this phone, whether a call is active, the number that call is connected to and the like.
I know this is probably required to do multiplayer, but I won't buy it (or install it if it's free). I don't know you and I'm not giving you access to my phone#, serial#, active calls, and caller I'm connected to.
Just my little slice of securing my life the best I can.
privacy concern? I thought that lot of peoples like word game in general
Root, i thought you were an android dev?
Phone state is required for a bunch of stuff, most of it does not require a concern with security
It's hard to get on top with word games. Our app is ranked around 200 or so in brain & puzzle if you want to check it out. (has multiplayer as well)
Its called Tile Takedown
Also, your download is over 5MB, which for a word game is a lot... is most of that your dictionary? or graphics?

Yes, I'm a dev. Just the fact that it can read my phone stuff and do whatever with it bothers me. My ethics as a programmer caused me to stop writing a "SMS Text Spam Blocker", which was going to be a slick application, just on account of what I realized I could do inside that broadcast receiver
Now, I may be wrong about the "phone" permissions, but I tend to error on the side of caution when it comes to my information and privacy.
Side note...I'm hoping the size thing isn't an issue these days. The app I'm developing now is 12MB...has 1,000 row database and about 50 png images. People have to realize you're not going to get high-end apps in the kb or sub 5MB range! (Note: Google Market limits app size to 50MB)

Just check your word game. It should be hardly profitable if the download number is around 10,000 - 50,000. I don't think that ad can generate high revenue.
It makes over $600 a month, not sure what "hardly profitable" is to you though
Sorry for my wording, it's just my personal view. Not intent to look down on your great product
I think that ad cannot generate high revenue because the ecpm are quite low in my apps, only around 0.1x. I use admob. If the download number is high enough, the revenue can hardly pay for the dev cost.
Theres a full version of the app for $3, but the free version generates more income.
The reason you are stuck at 100-500 downloads is because the dev console isn't updating. The ratings and bug reports are real-time but the download count hasn't been updated in about a week. I'm sure you'll be in the 1000-5000 range by the time it updates. or higher
Google just sent an email out to developers but it looks unrelated to the updating issue.
I like game like scrabble, I hope you make multilanguage game in future!
The download number is always not updated. I have made post in google support forum to gain more attention.
But the ad request in admob / adwhirl has been checked as well, which is around 100. Our other apps generally made 1000- 5000 in the first week. Therefore it seems like not many people are interested in trying the game.

I agree with ravishi, I am checking mine for the last three days and it hasn't updated, something wrong with the console stats.
Google send an email saying something about the "what's new" in apps needs to be dealt with.
Have just changed the icon. Hope it will be more attractive to other players.

1 thing I learned from that link...
If about a few hundred of us get together and report a specific app malicious it gets auto removed haha
LOL
What is the world coming to...?
Airpush is nothing but adware in my opinion. Infecting your system with advertsements in places they shouldnt be.
Also if people that make malicious software start implementing airpushs code to access the notification bar.... Thatd really be frustrating.
I for one would NEVER download an app that uses this method to advertise. The developers deserve to make money, but not by annoying the hell out of the consumer.

Open Platform is Open. Gonna have to deal with this stuff until Google is intelligent enough to publish Official, Enforced UI guidelines and start policing their marketplace better.
Unbelievable
I hate it when apps put something up there advertising their other apps, I will rage so hard if this pops up one day.
it's one thing to have ads within apps that run on their own, but to inject them into the notification/windowshade is beyond intrusive. no way in hell would I install anything that utilizes this
This is against the market rules.... report any app with this...
Google has already blocked/removed some apps doing this. Personally, I don't think its bad... have a full/clean screen for gaming, and I can just drop-down and clear without my screen being an ad....
o well, just report it.

Lol. No, it's not against the rules.
Google only removed the apps because of the number of people that reported them as MALICIOUS. That goes to show how little Google Polices their marketplace, though. They had absolutley no clue about this. It was just an overreaction on their part in those cases.
It's not against market rules, and it's not against the UI guidelines. Google needs to crack down. This would never happen in i.e. iOS or WP7 where they apps are actually checked before allowed to be posted to the marketplace. They'd get rejected in a new york setting.
And there is too much wrong with that. The notification bar is not for Ads. I don't even think Applications like Beejive/Trillian/etc. should be allowed to put their huge "Hi I'm running" things in the notification bar, either. It makes getting to the notifications too clunky esp with how much room these things take on a 4" screen...
^
The app that was removed, the developer wrote a very nice article stating that it violated policy and that is why his app was removed from the market, without any warning.
It is BS, I dont mind having ad during the game (like the flash ad in the browser).
But it is definitely a malware if there is ad popup from my desktop taskbar without opening anything

Stop reading any old tripe you read on the internet. The HTC thing isn't MALWARE. Thats just silly sensationalist reporting. You out to punish the tech idiots reporting that crap by going elsewhere for your tech news.
As for this, i'm guessing it's something like Android Lost, where you can send a push notification from the web (after logging on with your Google account) and your tablet will enable GPS or Wifi and work out where it is and respond back.
Try Android Lost to see what it's all about... It's unlikely to be a permanent tracker, more an on-request location service.

When an application can cause DAMAGE, in the HTC case, STOLEN PERSONAL INFORMATION, then its MALWARE, pure and simple, When its fixed so that only HTC can get the logs of what you type, do, use, your location, then it becomes SPYWARE. No need to try and convince me otherwise because of the amount and specifics of the data collected and inability to opt-out.
Nice try however.

You mean a more simple version? Which features would you keep?

Yeah, to encourage people to try without having to buy - it's a weird psychological thing, people won't spend $0.99 on an app they're not sure about, but will happily put down $3.99 for a cup of coffee that might not be that good tasting
One suggestion would be to just include a few topics (50?) and no search, favorites, share etc. But you're the best judge of what you think might be enought to give a taste but still encourage some portion to lite users to buy the full version.

Thanks, this is interesting.
The app is now completely free. You propose to have two versions? We thought of it before launching, but went for the full and free version. We wanted to see how many people who downloaded it. I think you're absolutely right. People are willing to pay "a lot" for a cut coffee that might not be that good tasting, but not that much for an good app. We monitor the situation and evaluate continuously.
By the way, here are som pictures of the app. Do you have some comments on the app as well? Thanks.

Nice to see the app free, just downloaded but it crashed at launch (Nexus 4), is that something others have seen as well?

Thanks for your feedback. Which Android version are you using? We have not received any similar feedback. Did you try to start the app again and let it load finish?
4.3 - I launched a few times and it crashes immediately every time.

Hey, this is awesome app! Maybe you could add sound. You`ll put bluetooth in ear plug and when you are stuck, you just play some topic through smartwatch when you are stuck. Just kidding. I like this App!

Nice app!
It reminds me of IT Crowd tv series - they had a similar app to chat about football with fans)
