[Q] push notification froyo 2.2 - Epic 4G General

ok so this might be a NOOB question but i though with 2.2.+ that facebook would do push notifications? i had a blackberry before and LOVED that when i got a e-mail or a notification on Facebook my phone had notified me sometimes before my browser got it. so is their a way to get instant notification for Facebook and my AOL e-mail with out having to have it check at intervals ?
samsung epic froyo 2.2 updated via samsung updater.exe

They worked in DK28 but not in EB13.. It's pretty freakin gay...

Yeah it's lame. My "workaround" was to add gmail to my facebook account and let it push notifications to my phone, which provides direct links to the touch website.
It's not as elegant as an app notification, but it works pretty well and I don't have to have the slower fb app installed.

I use a facebook app called "Flow" and it sends me push notifications for anything I want - notifications, event invites, friend requests, new messages, etc. It's on the market as "Flow for Facebook" and its FREE. Hope this helps!

Did you figure out how to eliminate the dual notifications? I don't just mean the sound either.

The facebook app that came with 2.2 didn't do anything as far as sync and notifications once I logged in. I had to open up facebook in the browser, where it prompted me to enter my login again. Once there is let me sync my contacts and then setup notifications for anything i wanted (I don't use them though).
I do have two facebook accounts under accounts and sync in the settings though.

+1 Its an awesome.app

Yesterday, I noticed that you can now add facebook SNS (Social networking sync) under accounts. Now, if you have contacts from gmail linked with facebook, it will list their activities/media under each tab.
I was messing around with FB yesterday to try and figure out if I could get push notifications and removed my account. Went to add it back and noticed that it was there. Don't think it was there in EB13 but then again, I never looked.
Just thought that was interesting. Still no push notification after removing and adding my facebook acct back.

HTC Mail widget.

Basically, its annoying me, its like i have two seperate emails, whilst only using one.
I have the big mail widget as i like it, scrolling up and down emails without opening the app etc....
BUT
it seems to run seperate the android one, as when i get email notification, for 1 email sent to my gmail account, i get two notifications, one from htc widget one from android google mail. then when i load up htc, all the emails i have previously read, are set as not read because i read them on the android app!
anyone now a work around, ?
Unlink your gmail app from the gmail account. This is google's Gmail app that was written seperatley from the standard mail application, thus the notifications are seperate.
Use only the HTC Mail application and sign both your standard mail and gmail accounts on to them (activate POP3 or IMAP on your gmail account and set it up using the same details you would normally use in Outlook or some other program). There is a guide to setting up gmail accounts in external clients somewhere in the gmail help pages here: http://mail.google.com/support/
Once that is done, and assuming you've unlinked your gmail application completely, you should have it working the way you want.
Don't setup Gmail via IMAP or POP. Use Google's Exchange server. Instructions in the following link. They're for Windows Mobile but they work just the same.
http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?answer=138636&topic=14299
Don't sign out of gmail, that would stop the market working as well, just go to home>menu>settings>accounts and sync>google
untick mail.
personally, i go the other way and refuse to use HTC's travesty of a mail program...but that's just my personal opinion. Hope you get it working how you want it...

HTC Mail vs. Gmail App

Ok... so I've recently migrated to Android after several years of WinMo Standard - Windows CE - 5.0 - 6.0 - 6.1 - 6.5.
So far I like Android and I love this phone... never had anything has fast or with such a great screen.
With that being said I'm having several issues that I wanted to run by the people here and see what ya'll thought.
Quick setup background - I have two email accounts I like to use - Gmail and Yahoo. I have all of my conacts in gmail organized the way I like it. Also, I recently gave up on using MS Outlook to manage my contacts and calendar and now use Gmail and Google Calendar to manage those two exclusively.
So here goes my impression/questions/issues - hoping someone can shed some light on it.
In the past with WinMo I could set up POutlook to sync with gmail/g-calendar/google contacts by configuring m.google.com as my activesync/exchange server. Everything seemed to work great. Now however I cannot decide if I should set up the accounts on the INC to sync via exchange or google.
So first question - when using HTC Mail and setting up my gmail account as an exchange server account is it "true" push?
If it is why would anyone want to use the gmail app?
Next - when I set my calendar to sync via exchange it randomly takes my entries and duplicates them on places the duplicate on the day before the original one. Any idea why? When I remove the active sync calendar and have it sync with my google account everything is correct... this is strange to me since its pulling the same data from the same place, my google calendar.
I'm sure I'll add more confusing and rambling thoughts after I continue to mess with this thing.
Thanks!
from my understanding the gmail is instant push and the htc mail app refreshes every 5 minutes (minimum). if this makes a difference to you then it should make your decision easier. hope this helps

i had issues with gmail not pushing properly when set up as an exchange account via HTC mail. other than the push issue, i consider the HTC app superior in every way.
I just set the HTC mail to manual, turn off the notifications to HTC mail. I set gmail it notification on, then every time gmail pushes in the mail I check it with the HTC mail. After I check it the notification goes away.
This way you can still use HTC mail without it waisting battery power every 5 minutes pull checking.
I just set the HTC mail to manual, turn off the notifications to HTC mail. I let gmail push it notification still on, then check it with the HTC mail. After I check it the notification goes away.

might do this. thanks for the idea
If you set up your gmail account as an exchange account using m.google.com you can get push by changing your check frequency to "as arrive".
The issue I'm having is that the HTC Mail application wont open any attachments from my gmail account set up through exchange. I just get a message "The file cannot be opened because it is corrupted."
If I open with the gmail application it works fine
As a regular Gmail user, I find the Android Gmail app is superior to the HTC mail app. It gives me the same features I have when using a computer... like marking a star on a conversation, viewing different labels, and since I have multiple email addresses that my Gmail account polls, the Gmail app lets me see which of my email addresses was the recipient. It's right there in the label on the email list, without having to open each mail and look at the address information.
If you don't use Gmail, or have multiple email addresses that AREN'T automatically polled by your Gmail account, I'd agree that HTC Mail is nice. But for me it takes away too many of the nice Gmail features that I use. My $.02

This doesn't push. It pulls. If you look closely you will see a refresh icon flash in your notification bar every 5 seconds. Extreme battery usage.
As far as opening up your attachments, set it for Imap. Its the only way I got it to work for attachments.

Expect copy and paste from it, which I use a lot.
i like gmail app, because there is a delete button haha
htc one need to hit menu and hit delete.
Gmail...
I found using the Gmail app and the HTC Mail separately, I was killing my battery faster.
What I ended up doing, was having GMail PULL my pop mail, and then I'd just pull it all through the gmail app. Helped my battery life a great deal.
Pro's - Everything in one place, Easy batch delete
Con's - I have to TELL it to load the entire message (Show Picture). In HTC I didn't have to do that.
Other than that, I'm happy to have everything centralized.

[Q] Facebook Sync with contacts issue

I have the facebook application syncing with my contact data.
When I pull up my contacts and look under the linked accounts, each user has 5 linked accounts.
How is this possible? Is this a glitch?
The only other contact sync I have is Google.
same here.. when I look, there are five icons "linked" one google, one facebook, and THREE little green icons (WTF are those?)

Yes, that is exactly what I have too. Very annoying.
I have noticed this issue as well. In my accounts and sync settings I somehow have two facebook accounts, which I think was caused by the last upgrade to the facebook app.
Unsyncing and/or deleting one of the facebook accounts solved the problem.
I am also showing lots of account sync icons in my contacts. Thought maybe I just did something wrong. If deleting them and then syncing them worked for you I'm going to try it and see what I come up with.

Happens on mine too. If you set up your Facebook account from the Accounts and Sync settings, then you won't have any problems with multiple linked accounts. When you use the Facebook Android app and widget and login, it'll ask you if you want to sync your contacts and calendars. That's where I saw that all the duplicate linked accounts appear.
The big problem I've seen is that either way, if you go to your contacts and try to access their Facebook page it will only open your profile and not go to their page.
Kind of sucks.

I get that too! Now because I have multiple links to each contact, I have 5 links to facebook profiles under each contact. Each time I click on any of them, it simply takes me to my own page. Great...
I Just double checks a few of mine and it shows 3 right now but I think that's because I have it showing on specific accounts. I have a Google, Facebook, and unknown account listed per person. The unknown one is the one I don't get. I can also see their recent updates, pics, and profile pics again. Idk wtf happened lol.

Yep, I meant to edit my post with how I got rid of them but because I'm a n00b here I get limited to one post every 5 minutes including editing :\
The way I found to get rid of the duplicate contacts is having to go into the Accounts and Sync settings and delete the Facebook Android account. If you're using the Facebook widget that will also log you out of it. You can then log back in using the widget or app and make sure to uncheck the contacts sync so that way it doesn't sync at all (especially since your phone already is doing so if you added your account using the Accounts and Sync setting). Reason I wanted to get rid of them is when you access your contacts through something like adding a new contact from an unknown text message, it pulls up all the synced contacts that are connected with your phone (duplicate entries stored on your phone/sim/facebook account(s)/twitter/etc)

[Q] Facebook Contact Photos - Don't show in SMS App on Eclair or Froyo? - Annoying

What does a guy have to do for the Facebook contact photo to show up in other Android apps that display contact photos like SMS?
If I apply the photo to a contact from local storage it will show on the SMS app, but I haven't found a single Facebook contact photo that will show in SMS. Why?
Is there a trick to getting this to work? I'm finding its the same on Froyo DK17 release for Epic and stock DI18 Epic.

FIX ACTION:
1. Delete the existing FB account from Settings -> Accounts and Sync
2. Select your FB account and hit button "Remove Account"
3. Go to home screen
4. Open Contacts application in Android
5. Menu option to "Get Friends"
6. Hit "Add Account" button
7. Add Facebook Account
You'll have to go back and open Facebook application and authenticate to that separately.
You have to actually end up with two Facebook accounts under Settings -> Accounts. One is for the Facebook application and widget. The other is for the Andriod Contacts and Calendar apps to sync tightly with FB.
I had the same problem so I unlinked my Facebook friends from my contacts. Now my contacts don't have a picture at all! If I edit them, the previous picture shows up but when I finish editing, its not there.

I don't know about 2.2 as I have not been brave enough to flash a rom yet. However, I just resolved this problem about a week ago on 2.1. What I did was delete all FB accounts on my phone, After that go to the facebook widget, it will have you sign on to FB. Do it. Now go to your contacts and long press on someone. Go to get friends. You will then have to login to your FB for that. Do it. Link your contacts if needed. For some reason the order in which you do this matters. It's freakin' stupid.

Thanks alfiej - that did the trick. It's the same in Eclair as Froyo. You have to actually end up with two Facebook accounts under Settings -> Accounts. One is for the Facebook application and widget. The other is for the Andriod Contacts and Calendar apps to sync tightly with FB. And you're right, looks like the best way to add it is through Contacts "Get Friends" option. That synced up the contact data AND grabbed the FB photos for my contacts! Woot!
i prefer not to rely on the system to pick the photos as it tends to mix them up horridly, i use an app called syncmypix in the market its free and lets you pick or can do a smart scan
Same here...when you install the one made by the facebook app tell it not to sync. Go to the sync settings and add the facebook one at the top. Then go through and join your contacts. Works like a charm then.
No prob, glad I could actually help someone. And good looking on the sync app, I am going to have to check it out. I'm tired of baby pictures in my contact list lol
+99 on syncmypix!!! Sweet high res goodness for my contact photos! I think they even synced to my corporate exchange contacts after updating on my device. Thanks shabbypenguin for that tip!
