I have no HD-content to test with, but I'm currently encoding Avatar from a DVD using Handbrake following the guidelines in this posting.

I'm currently using Handbrake and using the Apple 2TV preset and its working fine. I don't plan on changing since its easier to just have one preset and using the same file with my Ipad, Xoom, and Apple 2TV.
Yes to HandBrake.
Also used DVD Fab8 Video Converter/MP4/genericMP4-h264. Used single pass, made filesize 4000mb, and make sure to use the stereo or Dolby II setting for audio.
Speaking of Handbreak, that app is not shy. Thought my i7 was going to burst into flames.
I've used Handbrake to encode from a DVD but I haven't gotten past the trying out different settings phase. When I get home I will have to post the settings I've come up with that worked for me.

Im using Handbrake. Picture is good, but the mouthing is just slightly off. I've tried 3 different profiles, but can't seem to get the mouthing right.
1. Just using the Universal settings.
2. Av Bitrate 4000 Codec AAC (Faac) Samplrate 44.1 bitrate 128 and DRC 0 Motion Est Meth - Diamond
3. Av Bitrate 2200 Codec AAC (Faac) Samplerate 48 Bitrate 160 and DRC 4 Motion Est Meth - Diamond

AppleTV2 preset works with the native video player, except for some choppiness. The instructions posted in my link above didn't work at all, not even on my PC with VLC.
AVI's play just fine with RockPlayer.

I use #3 and it works great. Videos are clear.
And depending on the source resolution you may or may not get full screen.
BTW, these are converted from 7GB+ MKV files.
I have tried converting some 720 shows with handbrake under the appletv2 settings as mp4 qqplayer was unable to see the file, Rockplayer Light was able to play the file with slight video lag, and audio lag.
I also tried using e.mote's script http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11768975&postcount=8 and it produced unusable file for both players

I was also able to try out dvdcatalyst you can grab a free trial here http://www.tools4movies.com/ This has been the best converter so far, it was a simple setup and has a dedicated xoom profile. granted i have only tried one video so far but it looks to be promising
I as well tried the AppleTV2 preset and saw desirable results.
Nice since I am already encoding everything for ATV2 anyway

I currently use Nero recode for mp4 which is very good in my opinion plus the video qualityis great, but need one that can handle HD rips, any pointers will be appreciated.
Try mediacoder its open source and its free, very powerful tool to convert videos.
Not sure if SUPER does mkv, but it's free and has loads of options.

What am I doing wrong in Winmenc, every time I encode something using either xvid or x264...and i copy over to the desire when i explore using astro, i cant find the files...

I tried Winmenc today and it didn't fly for me either. 1st-pass runs fine but 2nd pass immediately renders a 0-bytes file. It's the same with single pass encoding. Perhaps we are missing some obligatory codecs for this program to function properly.

Thanks for this will give it a shot, but 2000kbps is a lot of bit rate and lot of memory card space, i will edit the settings and reduce the bit rate to around 750 for the video and bout 96 for audio..
I just use Handbrake.
800 x 480, 1500kbps data rate, 128 audio at 48khz
are you able to save a profile out.. haven't used HANDBAKE before so being a little lazy

I also like Format Factory. But Desire doesn't play video as nice as HD2 does...

Have you tried mvideoplayer off the market, runs nicely.
Yes, I have now. It does work ok, but still seems that HD2 perform better.

Super simple totally worth it. Otherwise I just used handbreak which I still do for larger files which I want to tweak more. Miro Video Converter is soooo easy though and nice if you just want to drag and drop a file to get what you need.
Sadly I cant post a link yet since I'm a "new" user, though I've looked at this site for years. Wonder how long it'll take to be verified?

wow that does look really good, it even has a Nexus One profile which should work perfectly!

edit: tried it and dont like it. It gives you no control over bit rate/quality and as such transcoding a large file ends up in a file almost the same size.

Hi thanks for the .ini, I changed the bitrate to 1000, framerate to original and the audio bitrate to 160. looks nice. I am going to play around with the video bit rate and see how low I can take it.
What is interesting is that the Desire will play these x264 encodes but not my handbrake x264 encodes, wonder what I am doing wrong.....

I have been messing about with different settings and think i have found the solution to perfect video convertions but some other fault always appears.
i made this thread to show an easy way to put a movie on your xoom without any work no need to set the resolution or anything

im not sure im new at adding videos to android devices but if you download the software theres a manual in pdf form that explains everything it can do.
I have about 60 DVD's ripped so far using this same program. One thing to note though, The movies are a bit grainy when you do the preset Xoom setting. You might want to go into video settings and up the bitrate to 1750 or so if you really want your movie to look amazing on the Xoom.

Also you'll probably want to get AnyDVD. It breaks encryption and copy protection so that you can *ahem* backup your disks. It even fixes the disks that try to use false headers and what not to make the movie play out of order when you rip it. I've been using the 21 day trial version myself.
My first try at converting a 720p mkv high profile video is ok. It is not full screen like the youtube video indicates using the Xoom setting. The sound however is much louder compared to using the free handbrake application.
The application itself needs some work on the GUI. It is not very intuitive. Also, when it is running, it causes my computer to not be as responsive. Handbrake does not do that.
This is only my first test so results may vary with other files I try.
if you want better quality next to the xoom preset click modify and you can change the resolution and bitrate from a 1000 to 1750 like the previous post said. if a dvd has 2 versions there will be 2 different movies at the top one is for widescreen and 1 for fullscreen

What are you file sizes. Like example a 90 minute movie, 120 minute movie, 150 minute movie, and a 180 minute movie.
night at the roxbury was 600mb and thats 82 mins
but then inception which is 2 1/2 hours long is 1.1 gb
so maybe 500 mb for every 1 hour?

did you click manage next to the xoom preset and and change the bitrate or audio quality? ive burned 10 movies and all have had no problems whatsover
I did not do any dvd ripping but converted 720p mkv files into xoom format using catalyst. Quality was good and the file size dropped from 4.5gb to 1.2. No sync or stuttering issues. Really impressed.
Down side is it took the length of the movie to convert and like one poster said it lags my whole PC down.

Most common (non-DRM) video files, including MKV and ISOs. Just drag&drop them onto the program. If you drag folders, it will filter out the video files. Some MKVs might give some problems due to either having compressed-headers headers enabled (a recent change in MakeMKV, enable "fixmkv" setting in Global Settings > Advanced), or due to an unsupported (at the moment) audio format (truHD/e-ac3). Depending on the source of your MKV's most work though.

If you test-play your files on your PC, don't use Windows Media Player. WMP has sync-issues with MP4 files. if you use Quicktime or VLC, they will play fine.
As for the PC-slowdown, the conversion to h264 video is quite processor-intensive, and the software uses whatever power it can find. The faster the processor, the faster the conversions. If you use a single-core/cpu system, conversions tend to run at about the same speed as the length of the movie (select the xoom-fast profile to speed it up), but if you have a nice Core i7 Quad or 6-core, you can rip a 2 hour movie in about 20 minutes.

Why not provide an option to lower the priority? It sounds like the application is only usable now if you queue something up to run overnight.

Global Settings (enable "power user" mode) > Conversion > conversion priority.
By default it runs at "Normal" priority.
So, bought the Gtab on Friday, got a 32gb unlocked (Sweet). So, here is the problem that appears to be happening to almost everyone.
My video playback is Horrible, I've tried multiple codex's, and different Resolutions.
The videos so far i've tried.
3,343 Kbps 1280x720 at 29.970 fps, AVC ([email protected]) (CABAC / 4 Ref Frames) .MP4 Container, Very Choppy.
1,390 Kbps 640x272 23.976 fps MPEG-4 Visual (Xvid) Advanced [email protected]) (BVOP2) .avi Container Very Choppy
5,000 Kbps 1280x720 29.970 fps, VC-1 (WMV3) ([email protected]) .wmv Container Plays Flawlessly
Everything but the .wmv will play flawlessly on my Vibrant. Actually .wmv's are the only thing that i have found that won't play on my Vibrant.
I will test more configurations, but so far i'm not pleased with the video playback on the galaxy tablet.
I've tried other video players off the market, Moboplayer, mVideoplayer, haven't tried RockPlayer yet, but i had it on my vibrant and I felt the playback was not as good. Maybe i'll try it on Honeycomb.
So, I guess list your experiences so far, and suggestions. I will update as I go and find things.

The majority of my videos (720p and 1080p mkv) are converted and compressed while maintaining the quality by using this setup:

I found that this morning and tried it, i Converted 3 different files, and tried different settings, and they all run like crap. I guess i will try some other settings on it.
Who thinks Sammy should use Exynos in the tab? Tegra does not seem to be very friendly with respect to playback. I find it tough to believe that Tab looks so sluggish compared to GS2.
Just download a different movie player app. MoboPlayer works great, and it's free.

Whats wrong with just converting everything to hi-def MP4 on your desktop/laptop and dumping on your tablet? I mean the iPad does it with great success and gives the user the impression that it can play every video format??
The tab is a 10" screen, just about any video format 720p and above (hell even some 480p) will look just as good as 1080p on your 40-50" tv screen....or am I missing something???

What program and settings do you use, then?
Ok, I just purchased the 10.1. I use it alot to play back mp4 and m4v videos that have been encoded by Handbrake. What I've noticed on the 10.1 is that while they look excellent, when panning, the video pans with a jerky motion and is not smooth.
Any suggestions? I've looked around the forum but have not found anything definite. I've encoded the video at 720p.
From what i've read and researched, Tegra 2 only supports H.264 with Mainline Profile, Meaning 3 Reference Frames and no B frames, i've encoded several 720p Videos that way at 5Mbps and they play flawlessly.
While researching, i came across someone that came up with a Profile on Handbrake. That is what I've been using to encode my videos and so far, everything works great.
I will continue to do more Research.
Just a fyi, it does support High Profile, but with a max of 4 reference frames and 3 B frames.

Even he says it, Tegra 2 currently doesn't support anything above Baseprofile because of driver limitations
But that thread is a Very good reference on how to encode video using handbrake, for Tegra 2 Devices.
He wrote that before the 3.1 update. He should really take that out.

I've only converted mkv files, but for 720p ones I use 1280 max output width, 20 video quality, live video type, high h.264 profile, and veryfast encode speed. For 1080p I just change the profile from high to baseline. All of my videos (with the exception of Avatar.....Man that's a long movie) are cut by two thirds. I guess I should mention though that I have a Motorola Xoom til I can sell it and get a Tab

I just got my tab today and I am bitterly disappointed in how poor it is in terms of formts supported. Non of my avi or mkv files play (and when I use a 3rd party app they lag like crazy).
some people say it's mp4 with decoded with H.264 and some people say it's wmv. i've tried them both on my evo 4g but still can't figure this out.
have any ideas?
I personally don't see any difference in picture quality other than file size. However, if you plan on using your HDMI cable, I would be more concerned with the resolution size, than the format. That's my 2 cents.

I read on Android Central a long time ago that MP4 was the extension the EVO liked best. If you need help converting videos, I recommend using Handbrake. After you've downloaded your video file, load it into Handbrake and use these settings to make it EVO-friendly:
In the picture tab, set Anamorphic on None, and adjust the resolution. The EVO can only accept as high as 1280x720. Leave Keep Aspect Ratio checked. This will ensure the video doesn't get squished or is too tall.
Skip Video Filters.
In the Video tab, use MPEG-4(FFmpeg) as your codec. Under Quality, I find it easier to aim for a specific file size than bitrate. The EVO supports HD files up to 2GB, as I've noticed any higher results in lag.
In the Audio tab, choose whatever settings you please for output. You really don't need to change anything here.
And that's it. Any questions feel free to PM me.

However, on the evo of course, using h264 limits you to 800x480. Now, switching to 1280x720 would give you a better picture you would think. However, of course you have to use the 3gp codec, which is probably over 10 years old, and is horrible at compressing video. It really wasnt even meant to be used on video, just audio.

I agree with you. What I do is convert using Handbrake and select iphone4 preset. Works great on my evo.
x2 on mp4 for a smooth running video, I use iPod or iPhone settings when selecting a conversion.

In the picture tab, set Anamorphic on None, and adjust the resolution. The EVO can only accept as high as 1280x720. Leave Keep Aspect Ratio checked. This will ensure the video doesn't get squished or is too tall.
Skip Video Filters.
In the Video tab, use MPEG-4(FFmpeg) as your codec. Under Quality, I find it easier to aim for a specific file size than bitrate. The EVO supports HD files up to 2GB, as I've noticed any higher results in lag.

Depends on how big a file you want. Id start with 640x360 at 1.5 mbps bitrate and go from there. I find this setting to be good enough quality at a good file size

I tried this MediaCoder. It is ad ridden and very slow. I'd rather just remux with Wild Media Server, it takes a few minutes.
I am using Quick media Converter, and there are roughly 1000 options,
so lets start with something simple:
What codec and output file type (format) should I choose? I am guessing 16:9 aspect ratio?

You'll want to keep the same aspect ratio the video you're converting has. Haven't used Quick media Converter, so can't offer any specific help for it, sorry!
Could be best to try a few different settings with a short video clip to see what works best - saves having to convert a full episode, film or whatever you're converting.
Why bother converting the video file when you can use an app like MX Player that can handle most video formats ?:silly:

MX player is nice for a bit, but I am much more excited for vlc to drop it's beta tags. MX is to buggy and finnicky for my palate.

Suggest Handbrake and start with an iPad preset then adjust as follows:
MP4 container
ACC sound (stereo)
h.264 video codec , level 4.1 or lower. Maybe level 3.x to start to check for compatibility.
Audio
I suggest 128 kbit/sec with some Dynamic range compression (x2) and audio normalization - assuming you are using a movie source
For a 1080p or 720p source I would recommend setting 1280 pixel width, keep aspect ratio, and allow the converter to adjust the (output) height to be correct.
I would suggest 1400 kbit/sec for the video encode and then try higher bit rates if you like as there may be an upper bit rate limit for the hardware decoder on the N7.

I was with you up until the last bit.
Avoid dynamic compression and normalisation, there's really no need.
I took Avatar from a BRD down to 37GB MKV with make MKV then used Handbrake to take that file down to a 3.69GB .MP4 file.
Took about 2 hours to do but the film looks, plays and sounds great on the N7
