[Q] unroot?? - Epic 4G General

is it possibile to unroot the epic eb13 without having to use the cable/ odin / or anything computer related?
my phone is not working with odin or anything if i plug the usb in, but i am able to move stuff to and from my SD card by just putting the SD card in the computer.
took to sprint to try and get it repaired BUT cause they saw i was rooted they said they cant help me because i am rooted.
by the way i have tried VARIOUS methods of trying to get the usb to work by using 4 different usb cables. uninstall and install the drivers. different usb slots in the computer.
all keep showing
"USB device not recognized"

I had this problem when I was getting ready to upgrade from rooted DK18 to EB13. I wanted to backup my stuff first but the usb wouldn't recognize mass storage. I think I may have broke something when I started removing apk's and disabled touchwiz in favor of launcher pro. The phone worked fine but mass storage was not available. When I installed the Epic drivers on my laptop and connected my phone, the mass storage still wasn't recognized but Odin did see a connection.
If Odin still sees your connection on a different pc (disregard the windows error), then flash whatever firmware you need and all should be well.
Let me know if this helps.
PS....Don't forget to disconnect and reconnect your phone at least twice after installing drivers on a new pc. It takes at least 2 reconnects to install the drivers correctly...at least thats always been my experience.

im getting nothing in odin =/

Yes, but have you tried connecting to a different pc. I had the exact same issue on my desktop pc and then I tried on my laptop. For some unknown reason Odin worked fine (but still no mass storage).
At first I thought there was something wrong with my desktop's usb ports but after I flashed back to stock, suddenly mass storage was available on both my laptop and the original pc. Don't ask me why, it just worked.

Doesn't doing a hard reset make you lose ur root?

My phone wont promt me to mount my SD card when i connect via USB to my laptop

I tried to figure out how to setup adb, and in the process tried to reinstall HTCSync2.0.25.
Ever since then (it may be a coincidence though) my phone does nothing but charge when i ahve it plugged into my laptop. I tried different cords, ports and computers and still no notification telling me to mount.
Is there a setting that i touched that may have turned off mounting?
Did i somehow delete the drivers? If so, what do i need to download because clearly HTCSync2.0.25 isnt doing anything for me since i tried removing and reinstalling + rebooting several times.
Any tips?
EDIT: Ive never had any problems before and i cant remember if i had any when i first got the phone or not.. I'm on windows 7
are you using stock ROM or? does you phone play sound when it connect to the laptop?
everything is stock htc sense.
no sound is made. its like the phone doesnt exist when i plug it in. it just charges. At first i thought it was my laptop, but then i tried my other computer and it didnt work their either..
Have you tried rebooting your phone?
yes, more than once.
Rebooting hte phone with the sd card unmounted (from the phone settings). Rebooting with usb debugging enabled. rebooting with usb debugging disabled. rebooted my laptop. everything
bad data pins on the usb port on the phone?
i doubt that. it worked fine 2 days ago.
Do you have DoubleTwist installed? I tried it once and it messed up my usb mounting and media scanning.
nopei havent installed any new apps between the time where it worked, and it didnt.
one day it did, the next it didnt.
Maybe its a driver error? wehn you first plug in a new htc magic, will it see the SD card or will it not do anyhting until your have the proper drivers? because i just reinstalled htc sync for the 10th time and it still doesnt see anyhting
Can you mount via recovery?
If yes then it's not hardware, cable or your usb port. Likely rom or app related.
If not then it's hardware, cable or your usb port.
well i dont know how to mount via usb, but the screen says fastboot usb when i plug it in.
Nothing comes up on the computer..

What kind of recovery are you using?
Reboot to recovery and mount the sdcard from there.
Plug it into your computer.
Does a removable disk show up?
Try a different sdcard
Try a different usb cable
Try a different computer even!
If all three fail then it's probably your phone (hardware).
Try to mount via recovery (sdcard in the phone, rebooted to recovery and depending on your recovery version... in this example I'll use Clockwork Recovery go to Partitions Menu > mount USB storage.)
If successful then it's rom related.
If fail then hardware (sdcard, phone hardware, computer hardware, usb cable) related
It's not difficult to troubleshoot. We just need to eliminate possible problems to pinpoint whether it's your sdcard, phone, usb cable or computer.
Thanks forhelping me. I appreciate it.
But I don't know how to mount via bootmenu. Il try a different sd card when I get home.
Also I got the stock recovery. Nothing had ben changed
Alright i just put in another sd card and still nothing. would formatting to factory settings help?
But before i do that, is there an app that backs up all my data and then restores it?

Uhhh.... yeah. There are several apps on the Market that will back up your data and restore it. Mybackup Pro ($$$) and Titanium Backup (Free) are the most popular.
But I would suggest installing a custom recovery first.
Try clockwork (use my signature) by downloading Rom Manager.
As long as you have root, (you do have root right?) then you can easily install a custom recovery.
Honestly though, it sounds like a problem with your computer or cable. If you can access the sdcard from your phone then it doesn't sounds like an issue with the card.
yea i guess its a problem with my phone then. I just did a factory reset and still nothing. I tried different cords on different computers so its unlikely that they're all broken..
And no i dont ahve root. Thats why i needed to connect, i was trying to root my phone!

Yup. It sounds like an issue with the usb port on your phone then.
It seems like it's not recognizing the cable when it's plugged in to switch to enable usb mounting.
but how could this happen so randomly? i had it plugged in and no problems, then when i went to replug it in a minute later nothing happened.
It's not a driver problem?
My computer gave em a popup once saying the device malfunctioned or something

It could be a driver, but if you tried a different computer then it's like you said... it's unlikely that all your computers are having the issue.
Just for the hell of it, uninstall the drivers, plug the phone in and try mounting it.
We just need removable storage and that doesn't take any special drivers at all.
yea thats what i tried yesterday, which still didnt work
i'm on hold with HTC now.. i'll see what they say. it's still under warranty
I cant believe this randomly happened.

Can't Connect via USB

So I had my phone rooted, and removed some of the ATT apps using instructions from here: http://androidforums.com/samsung-captivate/124736-t-bloatware-getting-your-way-delete-some.html
After doing all this, the phone still worked fine, but as of today I can't seem to connect via USB. ADB doesn't see the phone, and even if I disable USB debugging and attempt to just connect as mass storage, the drives don't show up in my computer like they used to.
I attempted a windows rollback to just before I installed the drivers, then reconnected the phone, but I did not get any message about unknown devices, and the phone doesn't seem to be in my device manager.
Can anyone help me out here?
Edit: Running Windows 7 x64
you erased something you werent supposed to. dl the dump posted here & move it to an Micro SD. Put it in your phone and use a program to move it from external to internal memory then load back all the apps you deleted.
If I had deleted something, shouldn't USB connectivity have died right after I did that, and not after a night of doing nothing with the phone?
Either way, How exactly would I go about restoring from that stock dump that was posted?
Mine is doing the same thing. Had a hard time with the windows 7 drivers to begin with though.
I am going back to XP when I get home. Will see if it will recognize it then.

Hm, an update on my situation: 3g watchdog died on me a couple times (gave me the popup, asked me to force close), so I decided to reboot the phone, and now everything works like it used to. I had also restarted my PC since the last time I tried (and failed) to connect over USB.
So if anyone else is having similar problems, I guess try rebooting both the phone and your computer.
I'm going to be keeping a copy of that "Rooted Stock System Restore" update.zip on my phone from now on, just in case.
The first Captivate I got from AT&T did the exact same thing right out of the box. I actually had to return it for another unit. Hopefully that was just a freak thing though.
I had a similar issue with windows 7 when I was first trying to connect via usb. Not sure if this will work for you, but I had to plug it into my rear port, the front ones didn't work just for the captivate.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
it seems im having the same probs too i removed the att stock apps that were in one of the posts, im downloading samsung kies atm to see if that will help...
Edit, it did...windows and ADB redetected it.
I also rooted my Captivate and removed all of the AT&T crap. USB connection is still working fine under Windows 7 x64. Didn't install Kies or drivers either.
Halleleujah!
I had the same problem. Got this file from Samsung, and it worked on my Win7Ultimate 64 bit machine.
Try making sure you are back to touch wiz and see if it works... Worked for me.
I had some issues trying to get my phone to connect also ...
Windows Vista64 Ult.
Initially the MTP driver would hang when the phone was connected, and then eventually it would indicate that the installation was successful, then it would re-install itself after about 5 minutes. This was an endless loop which was severely draining of my system resources causing other applications to hang as well. I removed the drivers and ...
I downloaded the USB drivers from Samsung and installed them, when I connected the phone the computer did not recognize it, nor did the display on the phone indicate that it was plugged in. I tried several different USB ports.
I then changed the mode to mass storage and the phone was recognized, but both the internal and my secondary memory cards displayed 0 bytes free of 0 bytes available.
I downloaded the UK version of Kies, this was an utter waste of time. The Kies utility was not able to connect to the phone at all. I mass storage mode Kies displays an alert that it is not compatible, and the same goes for media player mode. If left in Kies mode the phone displays "connected", but the Kies utility just displays "connecting" and never progresses. Uninstalled Kies, and re-installed the Samsung driver ...
Connected the phone in Media Player mode, which is allowing me to access both memory locations without difficulty. Though windows pisses me off every time I connect the phone because it wants to sync windows media center with the phone ... though this is easily ignored.
Has anyone gotten the Kies utility to work with the captivate?

Try the Canada version, that's been working great for me, in Kies mode and all.

Help connecting Epic to pc (yes I used the search and my issue isn't resolved)

Ever since I rooted I can not get my Epic to connect to a computer period. I'm about to give up and just deal with what I got, hopefully someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong. Before anyone decides to be a smart ass I have used the search function literally for days and have tried tons of things recommended with no result. I am the first to admit I'm an idiot when it comes to anything involving computers but I'm pretty determained to learn.
This has to be the phone because I have tried to connect to 2 desktops (1 running Windows 00 and 1 running the most updated Ubuntu), and 3 laptops (Windows xp, Windows Vista and Ubuntu). When I rooted I used the Vista computer and connected fine (can't anymore). I didn't have the space on the C drive to install the Android SDK so I switched to Ubuntu (first time user btw lol). Somehow when I was backing my SD card I lost any access to it or the notification bar. I never got my SD back til I rebooted but I haven't been able to connect to any PC since. When I charge (even in the car) it always tries to stay in mass storage mode. I basically charge in my car with my phone off hoping it will just charge and not mount my sd card to my car or wall lol. Yes I wiped 3 times, partitioned sd, tried several different cables (but my husband used mine and no problems on his Motorola) I'm sure I've done something wrong when I rooted or mounted to Ubuntu.
I also can't use adb. I followed the directions to the t (a few times lol) but when I run any commands it says "no such file or directory" I didn't have adb on the windows pc when I di noobnl's one click so I never ran the (adb shell ect) commands. I now can't do jack. I am now running noobnl's DI18 ROM with modem.bin flashed thru Clockworkmod.
I have tried all the basics you will find wit 2 days of web search.
My goal is DK28 (dream on Erica lol)...Thanks for any help and for anyone sparing me a lashing ;-)

When you plug in on your windows pcs...in Device manager..do you see anything appear? also do you have USB debugging on the phone?
USB debugging on?
Have you tried reinstalling the drivers for the Epic?
Rebooted phone and PC? (Sometimes it helps)
Used Odin?
Something might have been screwed up during one of your downloads, bad file maybe. Try reinstalling your drivers first, use Odin (phone must be in download mode), and see if it recognizes te device. If it does then Odin the stock .tar file and go from there. It'll give you a fresh start.
That's all I can think of right now.

I bet your USB debugging is on since most root's requier it. Even tho it says connect to pc if usb debugging is on it wont connect to my windows 7 box
I would suggest, if you're really having this many issues, just boot into download mode (1 on the keyboard + power button) and odin back to di18.
Just for kicks have you tried Settings > Privacy > Factory data reset? I assume that wiping does the same thing if not more but it's worth it to see if it somehow resets a setting that might be the issue.
What's left - software issue or Hardware issue.
Software:
hmmm...yeah gotta try connecting through Odin which uses downloader mode instead of USB modes...
Can Odin see your phone? Run Odin as admin with antivirus off, and proper samsung drivers installed. Then boot phone holding down 1 key into downloader mode. Connect to computer through USB port on back of computer (i.e. directly to motherboard) - does Odin identify something attached to USB port?
Yes - flash the dk28!
No - with Odin still on, unplug the USB cable, pause, and reconnect it. Still No? Try a different USB port on computer. Also try uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers - be sure to reboot the PC. If still No, then try on another computer, and as you did before, try different cables. Still No?? --> hardware problem with phone.
Hardware problem with phone: Look at the usb port in the phone - is there any junk in there that might interefere with the connection?
Yes - clean it out
No: phone perhaps internally damaged:
Solution for hardware damage:
You and husband clean up and go to sprint store.
At store - tech will know phone is rooted, so:
--Tech more likely to like you? You handle it, maybe even blame husband. Husband can silently attend and look sheepish, playing the part of 'me man, me dominate environment, me break fancy tech of wife, me sorry." Try to get free replacement phone while simultaneously promising never to let your husband root the phone again, or even touch it.
--Tech more likely to like husband? He goes alone, cops to the true story of how you rooted it and then was backing stuff up when it suddenly stopped working [truth from men? so sincere!]. Try to get free replacement phone while simultaneously promising not to let you in the house should you even attempt to root again.
P.S. forgot to add you might turn off the PCs firewall while testing, as well.

same here. I tried out the free tethering app the other day and with usb debugging on i coudl never get it to install the proper drivers. Without it on and the 64bit drivers installed Odin worked just fine.
I have seen many Galaxy S devices not connect to a computer because of a faulty USB cable. Had my girlfriends sister switch out 3 Vibrants only to accidentally try and connect it to a laptop with a different USB cable and I've seen two others not connect with the stock Samsung USB cable.
How I fixed the tethering issue
I've had the same problem with my galaxy s - connecting to the PC (Win7 32bit) just doesn't do anything. As a test, I had a friend with the same phone/rom (froyo, rooted) connect - and he was able to! It installed the drivers and it just worked. He disconnected, I connected, and now it's fine.
So, see if you can find someone with the same phone and see if they can connect. Makes no sense to me, but it worked.
I've had my Epic fail to mount before. Interestingly any time I had an issue it was with a Mac - it always mounts on a PC. I'll stop now before I open up a can of worms.
Best advice I have is get a Dropbox account. You can use that guy to move files from a computer to the SD card without having to mount to the computer. Perhaps you can get a factory ROM (with root of course) on your phone that way?
You can get a app from the market called SWIFTP (free) & connect to your sdcard via ftp server. This can be a temporary fix till you get your connection error resolved.
I have 1 USB port on my laptop that the Epic shows up as "unknown device" on. Works on every other port, and everything else works just fine on the same port. The factory USB cable is finicky!

Rooted Evo will not connect to PC

I rooted my Evo with unrevoked3 a few months ago and since then (or sometime after) my phone will not connect to my PC. It will charge but that's it. I checked off the ask me every time I connect option, it's set to mount as disk drive. I am using the stock usb cable that came with the phone. I tried hard resetting, data wiping back to factory default. Still won't connect. Tried reinstalling HTC Sync. Doesn't recognize my phone being plugged in. I want to flash my phone back to stock so I can bring it back to Sprint but I can't bring it back rooted and I can't unroot it without using the PC. I have Googled and Googled all over but can't find an answer. I did a search here and there are similar problems but no solutions that have worked for me. Could it be the cable? It is in good condition as is the phone. Maybe the USB port on the phone? Those went bad on all my Blackberries. I'm sure this problem is expressed frequently but a response would make my day.

I am assuming you have a windows based PC.
Do you have any device driver conflicts in your windows Device Manager? I'd start there. Your computer wouldn't properly reconize your phone if you have some sort of conflict or you don't even have the right drivers installed.
Broken usb is a known issue with EVO, something about how it is soldered onto the motherboard. Are you running a custom ROM or kernel?
Have you tried mounting it in Recovery? You can always use a MicroSD card adapter to transfer files. I just use Dropbox.
You can unroot without your PC. Just download everything on your phone.
Download the S-On tool from Unrevoked. Flash it in Recovery. Check to make sure phone is S-On
Download the PC36IMG.zip restore to your phone, there is a thread with it in Development. Use Astro/Root Explorer to move the PC36ING.zip to the base of your SD card.
Go into HBoot and it will recognize it. It'll ask if you want to update, say yes. Let it sit and do its thing.
There is a guide in q&a about unrooting

Yes, Windows based PC.
So I downloaded the S-On tool, moved it to the root of my card with Super Manager, then flashed it. Says S-On at boot. I rebooted my phone, moved the PC136zip to the root of the sd card. Rebooted with down vol + power and it checks for pc136zip but doesn't ask anything. I tried zipping it in recovery and it says bad. I tried another download site and did the same thing, doesn't recognize it upon hboot, so I tried zipping from sdcard, selected it, it quickly said some text about updating then nothingness. How do I know if it unrooted?
Edit: Also, I checked my device manager on my pc but it didn't show anything wrong.
Install terminal and type su
You will get permission denied if not rooted.
I have a working PC36IMG.zip in my Dropbox, if you need it tell me and I'll PM you a link
if u think ur phone is broke cuz u cant connect to pc after u rooted it, it isnt broke at all. my phone did the same thing after i rooted it. I don't remember exactly cuz it was a while ago, but u may have to turn on usb debugging in settings before it will recognize it. also u can go into recovery and mount usb to write to it
It might have to do with the drivers you have to install when you run unrevoked. It has been a while, but I am pretty sure I had to install a special USB driver to run unrevoked.

I had this happen to my phone last week after I used my computer to root two other peoples phones.
It makes no sense really, but while in recovery I connected to the computer to move a few files to the phone, and after that it was able to connect whether in recovery or not.
See if your phone can make the connection while in recovery.
Ok, so I brought the phone to Sprint after trying a different USB cord and they said the port is damaged. My new phone arrived today but I need to get my phone back to stock ASAP. I got it back to S-On but when I attempt the pc36img flash it says...
SD Checking....
Loading... [PC36DIAG.zip]
No image!
Loading... [PC36DIAG.nbh]
No image or wrong image!
Loading... [PC36IMG.zip]
Then the black bar loads.
Then it says.
Main Version is older!
Update Fail!
Do you want to reboot device?
I hit yes.
I still have SuperUser Permissions.
I've downloaded a few different pc36img.zip from different pages and this happens every time.
Edit: Probably wondering how I did this without a USB. I bought an SD Card reader and transferred everything through PC.
Try this.
1. Plug your usb cable into the computer.
2. Plug your usb cable into the phone.
3. Wait and listen for the little sound that tells you that the computer sees it.
4. Unplug your USB cable from the phone and wait about 2 seconds.
5. Plug the USB cable back into the phone, listen for the sound, then look at the computer monitor.
On mine, I have to do this to make the autorun window pop up running Windows Vista.
Shot in the dark, but thought it might help.
Noise doesn't happen. USB port is damaged, noise will never happen.
On the upside,
(I don't have 8 posts yet or I would show the download image) Updated version of PC36IMG.ZIP that worked. Just rename to pc36img and it unrooted my phone.
I'm having this same problem. Now, In this case, I hear the noise. Then a second double noise (like when you unplug the usb) This happens whether I am in recovery or not. Also, oddly enough, the thing works on my mac. It's done this through several different ROMS Right now I'm using synergy (which is great btw). I'm really at a loss here. Anyone got any other ideas? Like where I can find it in device manager. There are like 9 "root usb" devices
*edit* Also, I'm using window's XP proffessional. I've tried some trouble shooting but nothing is really working. Also it's being assigned a disk letter when connected, during the short time (like less than a second) when the disk pops up it says removable disk. I timed it and it's being assigned H, but it's being ejected almost immediately.
I think it has something to do with power being supplied in the cord. Maybe something to do with kernal? I dunno. But I plugged it into a usb port in the back of my pc, and it read it : /

N4 not showing up at all on PC

I'm not sure when this problem first appeared. For whatever reason, my phone doesn't show up at all when connected to either of my two PCs. It must have when I first rooted the phone (to load ChainSU) but I'm not sure if the problem is recent or occurred immediately thereafter.
USB debugging is disabled. When I plug my phone into a computer, it attempts to install the MTP Driver and fails. When I uninstall my device, it disappears and I'm unable to manually install the driver's I've downloaded from other threads. When I load into the Bootloader, my device is recognized by Fastboot.
I'm hesitant to factory reset as this will leave me unable to root if the problem persists, which is important to me as I can get rid of the yellow tint on this screen.
Any thoughts?
Edit: $10 via Paypal for anyone who successfully helps me to a solution!
Are you definitely sure usb debugging is disabled? The phone should install as a portable device on your pc. Also ensure to enter your password onto your phone when connected otherwise the phone will not show up its contents.
Make sure for windows media player to be updated to the latest, for the windows mtp driver.

There are a few things you can try. Have you tried uninstalling the drivers completely then reinstalling from the toolkit? In the past, I've had issues where the phone wouldn't be accessible in some way on one computer but would be fine on another, so maybe try a different computer to try to narrow down the problem as to whether it's an issue with the phone or the computer? Also, this may sound a bit ridiculous, but simply switching USB cables and / or ports has fixed detection issues for me in the past as well--something to consider.

Remove any existing drivers (while phone is connected), do the same for other android devices if you have any, then reboot and install Universal Naked Drivers. Have always had success with this driver pack.

100% sure on both counts.
I have this same issue with my rooted nexus 4, I've tried 3 different computers and several cables and it never connects to the PC and only charges the phone. It doesn't even give me option to choose media files.
I've had this issue before, my Nexus/Computer was acting in complete stupidity. When connecting the phone to your computer you will see a notification saying "Connected as a media device" on your phone, just touch it, and change it to "Camera (PTP)". It might access the camera for you, but It actually accessed the storage for me.

Thats not the problem, it doesn't give any option. It doesn't show up on the computer at all and only charges. It's the same for every computer.

I have this same issue with my rooted nexus 4, I've tried 3 different computers and several cables and it never connects to the PC and only charges the phone. It doesn't even give me option to choose media files.

I'm thinking we've screwed something up with the phone's side of the MTP protocol - mine is totally independent of the cord/computer used. All the correct drivers installed.
Have you tried Factory Resetting? I'm really hoping this is a workable option.
If you have a recovery back up the current Rom and flash stock and see if it's working

if the phone is locked with a pin/password/pattern unlock it.
I had same problem on my pc yesterday. Even if the drivers installer showed up that installation was successful, somehow for a mtp mode system was using some other Microsoft driver. Correct one was only used in ptp mode. So when I connected n4 in mtp mode storage wasn't available, when I switched to ptp mode everything was fine. Turn on your usb debug, switch on mtp and connect. Go to device manager in system, find your nexus there and rmb on it and manually reinstall driver. After this my n4 is visible in system in mtp mode again.

The problem is that even if I switch between MTP and PTP it still does nothing, I have tried multiple cables, computers and have reflashed the ROM and wiped the device but it still does not connect with the PC. This is frustrating.

Is yours able to connect during Bootloader/Recovery? Fastboot/ADB have no trouble recognizing my device.
It's really odd that if these things work, meaning your USB connection is fine, replacing the all of software fixed nothing... unless MTP occurs at a much lower level of the OS (maybe kernel is corrupted?)
I've got a similar problem that others have posted - PCs not detecting my N4. I got it last Friday (2/1) from Google and after the registering process and updating to 4.2.1, I connected it to my Win7 laptop and it showed on the PC as a drive. But since I couldn't copy/paste Office docs to that drive and had to do that through Dropbox, I didn't bother trying to reconnect until Monday, at which time the PC didn't detect it. Neither will one other Win7 nor two XP (both with WMP10) PCs. Have tried multiple cables, all of which work with other Android devices (pre 3.0). I've seen several suggestions on this and other threads, but one major issue I'm having is that some of the fixes require enabling USB Debugging. For the life of me I can't find that option in the N4's Settings. Unlike my other phones, there is no Applications subcategory under Settings on my N4 (4.2.1, Build JOP40D). Can anyone help me find that option? TIA.
Edit - Found answer. Click on Build in About Phone setting 7 times. That activated Developer options. Now to try the fixes which require USB Debugging mode turned on.
