press harder. I learned quickly that it takes a firm push and you have to hit the button w/o your fingers getting caught up on the sides of the phone.
it's either that or you got a bad button

I have the same issue, this along with the lag I get at times when I attempt to use the camera has me seriously considering returning this phone. The Inspired I returned had non of these issues just a tinny speaker.

Mine wouldnt go to sleep today when pushing the button. Seems to be a few bugs with this phone eh?

I'm starting to look at re-mapping the keyword to allow the volume keys to wake it up, and then use the fingerprint reader to unlock it. That power button seems to fragile to me. To turn the screen off I just use Extended Controls.
Any thoughts?

Widget locker has an option to use the vol buttons for wake

I kinda have the same problem but its when i press the lock button the screen shuts off but then comes right back on. I press it again, it shuts off, then comes right back on.

I had the same problem - power button wouldn't wake phone from sleep.
I had to do a battery pull to resolve the issue.
I'm using the lastest FW.

Motorola phones (Not just Atrix, but Droid X also) have some funky business that sometimes prevents/delays the screen from turning on, even if the button press is registered. This happens with the power button and also the volume buttons if they're used to wake the device (Like with WidgetLocker). I haven't been able to narrow it down, but I suspect it's related to (ab)use of PowerManager's preventScreenOn()

It sounds logic to me, because even editing the right keyboard file to add a wake_dropped to the volume down, it won't turn on the screen. I hate when they change things the way they do with this, the bootloader, etc.

is it possible to Make the Evo's Volume Rocker as the On/off Button

Hey guys, do you think its possible to make the evo's volume rocker as the on/off button, because the samsung galaxy S the on/off button is on the side which is very convient spot, because you can turn on/off your phone without extending your thumb or finger all the way to the top of the device like our devices "evo", can this be dont on a software tweak?
Download "No Lock" from the marketplace. It disables the screen lock but also lets you wake up your Evo by hitting the volume up or down buttom. To turn the screen off, you'll still have to hit the power button though. Works well for me. YMMV.
+1 NoLock works like a charm
Ifly
EVO fully rooted fresh

Mhmm, i guess this will do for a while, hopefully someone here, will make it happen someday.... thanks for telling me this " No lock " app
no lock also sorta makes up for the lack of a physical silence switch... if hte phones in my pocket, i just click the volume down button once and then hold it until it vibrates and then hit the power button once. much easier than messing with the screen without looking at it =D
Lockout also does this, and you can customize your lockscreen.
I couldn't find lockout in the Market, and I like the slide to unlock I just don't want to have to reach up to the power button when the vol. buttons are there and should wake to unlock too. I'd pay for that tweak.

Thanks for that, sadly i cant root my evo right, cuz i did the recent ota update

Screen Lock & Freeze w/ Camera+Left

In trying to set up controls for a game, I found a very unhappy button combination. If the camera button is fully depressed while holding the left key on the hardware keyboard, the screen will lock and usually freeze the phone. Another user who tried to replicate this for me got an unresponsive camera app that required a reboot.
What are other users' mileage here? Anybody have any ideas on a workaround, or is this probably just a hardware quirk?
i tried every diff combination of left and the camera button, and did not have the same experience. i do know that if your in the camera app, and press power, it does lock the phone, but i think it is supposed to. pressing the power button a second time unfreezes it. imma do more research. i read something about this once on ppcg.
i found this.may or may not be the same thing for your friends.
"hey folks For those of you experiencing a lock-up while in camera mode, I thought it happened to me the other day as well, turns out its not a bug its user error. If you try to turn off the screen while in camera/video mode by hitting the screen lock button you are locking the camera mode, which mean you are making it so that the phone does not accept any inputs aside from unlocking by hitting the power/ screen unlock button again. This "lock mode" is indicated by lock icon appearing in the top corner of the screen. The reason for this screen unlock button again. This "lock mode" is indicated by lock icon appearing in the top corner of the screen. The reason for this mode is actually good, if you are filming something important you don't a finger slip hitting the back/home buttons and ruining your video, so you can lock it and not worry about it. Of course this means if you don't know about the feature and you activate it, instant freak out. That may have something to do with it, but is not the problem I am having. When I am somewhere outside of the camera app (homescreen or game, for example) if I hold the left arrow key and fully depress the camera button, the screen will turn off and make the lock sound. Usually I can unlock it with the power button or this combinaton again, but it will occasionally freeze and refuse to accept input from the touchscreen or capacitive buttons.
(If it's at all helpful, I was trying to set up the camera button as the R shoulder button in SNESdroid.)
It could be that the phone is getting confused and thinks I'm trying to lock the camera app, but since I'm not in the app it locks the entire phone.
I just did it while reading your post lol I can confirm it freaks out lol

Any tricks to save power button?

I find power button is extensively used during EVO operation. Each time I want to check the the screen, or after making a call, I have a press that small tiny little power button to light up the screen. I am not sure whether this button is the weakest part of EVO.
Are there any tricks to save the use of this button?
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/a-concerning-amount-of-evo-users-report-power-button-crack/
No crack here so looks like they fixed it.
For tricks. Get an app that will turn the screen off. Change the setting to keep the screen on longer so if you are reading something it won't turn off. Have someone call you so the screen turns on and you don't have to use the power button.
Might be a way to use the volume rocker to turn the screen on. Have not looked into that since I am not concerned about my power key not working.
Aosp roms have configurations that allow you to turn the screen on and off without using the power button. Plus theirs an app in the market called screen locker that allows you to shut the screen with the "search" soft key

[Q] Touchscreen not working on lock and reset screens

In the last couple of weeks, when the pattern lock screen is displayed, it intermittently doesn't accept touch input. If I power off and on the screen quickly, it then accepts touch input fine.
Similarly, if I press and hold the power button (with the phone on), it brings up a "Phone Options" screen, with options for Silent, Airplane, Profile, Reboot and Power Off. Touch input does not work at all on this screen. I'm working around this by using the Quick Boot app.
Otherwise, touch input works fine, so I don't think it's a hardware problem.
I've seen something similar when Google Nav gets in front of the lock screen. Touch doesn't work until I power off and on the screen, and enter the lock pattern. Could something invisible be getting in front of the lock and power screens?
Using Pongster's HyperDroid-GBX-v12 (2.3.3).
Hey there,
Maybe the ROM h doesnt function properly on your device. Try shifting to another rom. All are equally amazing. If you do not want to shift, try running task29 and start the process all over again

Have you read the thread about the unresponsive touchscreen, where pressing hard on the end call button fixes the screen touch? I assume your problem is in essence the same; once you press it hard enough to actually unlock the screen the touch works fine.

That probably is what the problem is. Btw to everyone, I haven't noticed a difference in pressing it really hard, I noticed that pressing it a lot of times does the trick

Thanks for the feedback. I don't think it's the ROM, been using GBX-v12 since it was released, and previous versions before that.
The symptoms do seem similar to the other thread, but others report it on many screens. I only get it on the lock and reset/power screen. Otherwise, it works fine. However, those screen are brought up after pressing the power key ...
I suppose if it is hardware, then it's likely that cable issue. If it's software, then a reset should clear it, so I might try an ICS ROM from scratch first.

I guess i shoulda commented that how my digitizer began acting, it only did it while in the power menu but after a couple days it started doing it while just hitting the power button to put it to sleep, so i remapped my green phone key to be the power button

Thanks for the tip. You're right about the symptoms getting worse, it now occasionally stops working on other screen
I'm using any button but power to turn on the phone. To turn it off I've added "Go to sleep" to the notification widget bar, which I assume is the same as pressing power??
Not quite as user friendly and sometimes I forget not to use power off, but it'll do for now!

Yes that will work! I used it cause I got lazy and didn't feel like changing the key file but it's much easier to use the green call key instead of the notification power widget

Try this:
Lock the screen normally, screen turns off.
To turn it on again by pressing any other screen buttons other than the power button.
I found that if I do it this way, the screen runs normal.

Nexus 4 sleep/wake button problem read?

At times (occasionally) I find myself pressing the wake button while my nexus 4 is on sleep at most 3 times in order for it to wake up.
Is anyone else facing the same problem?
By wake button, I assume you mean the hardware power button? If so, I've noticed that I need to press firmly on the center of the power button to guarantee waking up. If I push on the edge, it doesn't always work even if the button "clicks".
I haven't noticed any issues but I do have a bumper ($5 Poetic) and I can just slide my finger over with a little pressure and it responds. Not sure if it's hardware or like tengen said that you might not be hitting the middle, but there are quite a few ROMs out there that let you wake with the volume rocker as well, nice feature.
