So you are at the white screen that says hboot? It should be the second option on that screen saying recovery, use the volume keys to move to it, then use the power button to select it.

you can boot into your rom and then reflash recovery, I flash mine a few times as rarely its there the first time

Grab the PC36IMG.zip file from the Amon Ra thread and put it on your SD card. Boot to the bootloader, let it find the file, and update to flash the amon ra recovery. I hate clockworkmod. It's never been as consistent for me as Amon Ra.

you wiped your boot or system partition didn't you?
hold volume down while turning your phone on and it should bring a menu with three android guys at the bottom, once there use the volume buttons to select recovery and then push power to select it. That will get you into the recovery where you can flash a ROM. If it doesn't let you get into the recovery from there and you still have the autoroot folder on your computer you can run the file 'FlashZip' script and tell it to flash the SprintLovers_AmonRA... file. Just put it in fastboot mode before hand by selecting fastboot instead of recovery from the hboot

It sounds like you have the old debug firmware installed, the screen with the red triangle is the stock recovery. Pushing vol up + power in it should bring up a menu although there is nothing in there that is of use except reboot.
With the triangle showing on your phone run the FlashZip script and it should reboot you in to the bootloader, once it does that hit enter when it warns you about your bootloader being unlocked and it will give a list of different PC36IMG files. You'll want to flash the one that says SprintLovers-AmonRA to make sure everything is up to date.

When I experienced the red triangle and inability to boot into recovery, following step #10 of the link below pushed a temporary recovery onto the phone.

You still need to flash (by some means), a permanent recovery.
You can do so using either the PC36IMG.zip method, adb shell, or through console.

holy f !!!!! you developin son of *****!!!!! you are the man!!!!! you literally just saved my life i just got this phone yesterday and my girlfreind is on her way to kill me... so now what do i do about recovery and am i still rooted... and how do i give you money???

reboot recovery step not working

So I did the step by step rooting of my Sprint Hero
I get to the part where I flash the image in the shell and it is almost instant to get back to pound sign prompt
I then reboot recovery and the phone shuts off and powers on again with the HTC splash screen. The screen goes away after 1 second and the phone doesnt do anything. No recovery console at all.
What do I do? I want to install the custom rom but i I also want to backup the phone first.
Try this:
Turn the phone off. hold in the volume down button and the power button. When fastboot loads up press the home button and let us know what happens.
If it hangs at boot, reflash the recovery. Sometimes it gets corrupted during the download.
yeah, for some reason, when I try that way to it does nothing.. so i generally use the flashboot/hboot method

This happens for me as well and I am using the correct version with the "c" in it. Is the file actually 3.19MB? Also, when using the flash command, is it supposed to provide any feedback or create a file or directory on the SD Card?

It doesn't give any feed back that I know of. But there's a program called flashrec (Direct Link [.apk] ) that I use to flash recovery images right off the phone. And you don't even need to have a rooted phone.
this happened to me as well. i had to load up the stock sprint ruu, and then go through the rooting process again. the recovery image gets corrupted somehow during the flashing, and even if you try to reflash the image, the corruption remains on the phone. gotta start from scratch.....

Unbricking mytouch/g1 ( soft bricks only but no harm trying )

I found a site with someone who bricked their phone but found a loop hole. I have never bricked my phone and hoping i never will but for those who have bricked their phone here are some steps to try to unbrick it! HOPE IT HELPS! SEND FEED BACK!!
So you can’t access bootloader or recovery and the only thing that works is the blue led trick when pressing trackball + power button??
Try the procedure below.
Step 1: Turned Phone off by taking out the battery.
Step 2: Prepared SD card
Put SD card in card reader and formatted it as FAT32, copied the DREAIMG.nbh onto it.
Or try Sapphimg.nbh
Step 3: Put SD card back in phone
Step 4: Hold Vol down + Power + track ball together and put battery to start phone
Step 5: Run update
IF THAT DIDNT WORK!
TRY THIS!
Step 1: Turning Off Your Phone
Because you have a bricked phone, you can't just hold the power button. So if your phone is not already off then you're going to want to take out the battery.
Step 2: Preparing Our SD card
Take out your SD card and put it into an SD card reader or some type of other adapter so that we can view it from our computer. If you cannot view the SD card on your computer then you're going to need a new SD card.
Download DREAIMG-RC29.zip and unzip the file.
Reformat the SD card to FAT32 and copy the DREAIMG.nbh onto it.
Safely eject the SD card.
Put the SD card into your device.
Step 3: Wipe The Phone
Hold home and press the power button.
When you see the image of an ! mark, open your keyboard and press Alt + L if you cannot see any command options.
Do a factory reset by pressing Alt + W or just using the trackball.
When the reset is done, go ahead and hold the camera button and select the reboot system now option with your trackball.
Step 4: Flashing The Phone
Once the grey screen pops up (or the white screen if your phone was rooted with JesusFreke) it will ask you to hit a button to start installing the image…press that button. DO NOT DO ANYTHING TO STOP THIS PROCCESS. It will take about 8-12 minutes.
When the image has completed the installation (it will say completed), go ahead and press the green, red, and menu buttons at the same time. The phone will reboot.
And your done! Your phone is now unbricked!.
The G1 screen will hang there for a good minute or two, but be paticiant, it will boot. Now you have a choice. Try to hack your phone again, because you're in the correct state to have another go, or, you can stick with the official Android. Now if you choose to stick with the official Android, here's what you do.
Step 1: Upgrading to Android 1.0 RC33
Download the file signed-PLAT-RC33-from-RC30.zip
Rename the file to update.zip and copy it to your SD card
Reboot your phone into recovery mode. Power off the phone first and then hold down the Home key while powering it back on.
The recovery mode is finished loading when you see the ! mark inside the triangle. Press Alt + L to display the list of options.
Press Alt + S to flash the file update.zip.
Wait for the update to apply. Your phone may reboot during this process so be patient.
Press Home + Back if prompted to reboot your phone.
Step 2: Upgrading to Android 1.5 CRB43
Download the file signed-kila-ota-148830.de6a94ca.zip
Repeat the steps from above to flash the update file.
Step 3: Upgrade to Android 1.5 CRC1
Download the file signed-kila-CRC1-from-CRB43-FIX.7ca4a1d7.zip
Repeat the steps from above to flash the update file.
Step 4: Upgrade to Android 1.6 DRC83
Download the file signed-kila-DRC83-from-CRC1.c41b93c1.zip
Repeat the steps from above to flash the update file.

run fastboot boot recovery-image.img or whatever you named your recovery image. It'll display "waiting for device..." message just keep pluging it in, unplugging, popping the battery and eventually your device will respond and boot into recovery.
Someone bricked and i did it... twice trying to flash the eng 2010 SPL. It worked the third time and my device is up and running again with an engineering SPL.
if your device is stuck on the first splash but displays in red "Fastboot USB" message in the upper left corner of the screen, DO NOT power it down. run the above mentioned command and reflash.

fastboot boot recovery?
boot.img and recovery.img are two totally different things.
The recovery (amon_ra is preferred)
The boot.img is where the kernel, ramdisk, etc resides.
you must've meant fastboot flash boot boot.img
or
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
but not both.

It was the first flash too. Crazy how HTC didn't make a built in hard reset like you have on windows mobile phones. You wonder if they want people to crash there phones so they have to replace them ect etc.

Phone won't turn on, please help

Before I get flamed, I have searched the forums, but the threads are NOT helpful. (some old, and I don't want to hi-jack anyonelse's thread)
THis is NOT my phone. I am trying to help, so bare with me. I have the SK4G and G2x, so this device is a bit different for me.
Apparently, my friend tried flashing a custom rom, it took too long and he pulled the battery. NOW the phone refuses to turn on. The computer recognizes the device, but I am unable to boot into bootloader.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
What is "recognizing the device", and what happens when you turn it off and then turn it on while pressing VolumeDown (or VolumeUp)?
Technically pulling battery during a ROM flash shouldn't cripple the phone. unless that is another side effect of the bad emmc chip, in which case you may be out of luck. but as the previous poster said, try booting whilst holding down the volume down key and see what happens.
I have tried the down volume button and power... up volume and power... home and power, all to no avail.
If I connect it to the PC it recognizes the device.

The issue now is getting it back to stock and s-on in order to return it to TMOBILE. I can't select anything since the power button doesn't work. and I am not good at all with ADB.
can you select by pressing the optical trackpad instead of the power button?

It's okay, we have no problem helping people who are willing to help themselves.
From the Bootloader type in
Code:
reboot
since the phone doesn't have a working ROM it should boot into the recovery mode again
Well what you'll need to do is download the PD15IMG file PD15IMG
pull the SD Card w/o pulling the battery, and store just the PD15IMG.zip on the root of the SDcard.
Then type in
Code:
adb reboot recovery
again and unplug the phone. It should ask if you want to restore the PD15IMG, you'll hit the button (it'll tell you) to confirm that.

The Track pad only works if I am in CWM - if I am not mistaken. ( I have tried selecting with the power button and trackpad, nada)
I guess my next question would be, how to unroot using ADB without being able to select anything with the power button? Any way to flash the STOCK ROM and get S-ON again using ADB Commands? It will have to be sent back to TMOBILE. And since it is rooted, I have to UNROOT it. (The phone is ON MY ACCOUNT, but belongs to my friend. I don't want to get charged for the device because it's rooted and warranty voided)

Legend Won't Boot to Recovery

Hey guys,
I'm trying to boot into recovery mode on my Legend, but I've had no success as of now. I've tried using Rom Manager to boot to recovery and I've tried backing up my current Rom as well, but all I get is a phone with a red exclamation mark beside it. I've tried booting into fastboot, (Holding down the volume down button and power button) and hit the "Recovery" button, but still no luck. Any solutions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.
PS: Sorry for posting two threads in two days.
EDIT: Solved. For those having a similar problem, all I had to do was run the recovery once from my PC using the file "Recovery-windows" in the Legend tools. It had to push the recovery files into my Legend again because I factory reset it a couple weeks ago. I've been trying to fix it for hours, love getting to the bottom of things.
This also works:
When you get to the red triangle of doom press volume up and power. Then using the volume buttons to navigate and the power button to select choose "install update.zip" (something like that, I honestly can't remember what of actually says) then observe as your phone ends up in recovery.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
Hi,
I am new to HTC legend. I have a similar problem, can you please tell me what uyou refer to by "run the recovery once from my PC using the file "Recovery-windows" in the Legend tools." What program is that and how do I get it?
Thanks in advance.
Collectric: have you tried holding the volume up button and then pressing the power button?
For me it takes a few moments of pressing power but then a green box appears and i can move on.
Sent from my Legend using XDA App
Of course I pressed power and volume down, that's basic.
Unfortunately, I made a stupid mistake and tried to replace the recovery file using
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833423
which was prepare for Samsung phone (having the naive thought that Android is the same Android for every one ).
Since then I lost the possibility to go into recovery mode, and the author of the above mentioned program is not answering me, so now I am tryoing to look for a way to "recover" recovery mode ....
Thanks anyhow...
Well when I rooted my phone with theunlockr.com they gave us a legend tools folder and it has the recovery tools to push the recovery files into the phone which worked for me and I can then go into recovery freely I'll give you the link soon.

EDIT: Okay here it is http://theunlockr.com/2010/06/07/how-to-root-the-htc-legend/ make sure you download ONLY the "Legend Rooting Tools" and ONLY that you don't need anything else. Unzip the Legend Root Folder in the root of C:/ Also please do not follow the steps they mentioned as your phone is already rooted.
Here are the steps you should do:
1. Unzip the Legend Root Folder to "C:/"
2. Go to the folder in the "C:/" it should be called "R4-legend-root"
3. Put your phone in recovery mode using the power + volume down and click recovery in the PHONE not the PC.
4. When you're on the red triangle of doom (Make sure you are!) click "Recovery-windows" in the PC (Again located in the r4-legend-root folder which you unzipped)
5. A black box should come up pushing the files to your phone
6. Your phone should be in recovery mode
7. You can now go into recovery mode freely using ROM Manager instead of the computer like I do.
PS: Sorry for the late reply I was off on vacation.
Many thanks man, no need to apologize...
Well, the whole point is that strangely enough I CAN'T go into recovery mode on my phone...
Since that stupid act of trying to work with the Samsung program, when I press power and volume down I get into "Factory mode" which gives me the options to test my device, clear the flash and Reboot.
I don't even have the option to go into recovery mode...
I can try and copy all those files manually, as my phone is rooted. I will copy the files from PC into my SD then move them with my phone "total commander" into the proper folders in the root flash.
Does it sound like a plan?
Thanks again
Hi,
As you probably guessed, root is read only, so I met a dead end. I have no way to go into recovery mode thus can't replace any file in root.
I tried to reboot to recovery using "adb reboot recovery", the phone reboots and get stuck with green HTC on the screen - I had to remove battery, put back, press power with volume down to enter "Factory mode", select reboot and get again normal operation.
Any innovative idea?
Thanks in advance...
Maybe you can try to reroot your phone using the unlockr.com method. But I'm not a specialist at these kinds of issues, I wish to be more help. But is there any you can try to reroot your phone using theunlockr.com method?
Yes, I am working on it but I am not so optimistic as, on the way, they also instruct to go into recovery mode. Anyhow, till I discover something better I'll give it a shot.
Many thanks on your assistance.
As I suspected, its a vicious circle, all the repair methods eventually end in the recovery mode. To recover recovery mode I have to go into recovery mode - sad but seems to be true. I will try to open a new thread maybe there is some Android sage with some trick in the sleeve for me....
Thanks again
I'm sorry I couldn't be of help. If you do manage to get it fixed please tell me how you did it because it would be very useful to know recovery mode is essential for every phone. Thank you and sorry again.

HTC Legend doesn't boot into recovery even after pushing recovery files through PC
Hi guys, I have a rooted HTC Legend and was trying a new ROM "New Sense ROM" and after I installed it, I am not able to root into recovery mode even the ROM Manager says "Successfully installed Clockwork Mod Recovery". It gets stuck at /!\ Red Exclamation Mark. I tried pushing recovery files to phone using PC from 'r4-legend-root' folder which I got from www.theunlockr.com but it simply doesn't woirk. What may be the problem? Please Help.

when at the /!\ screen press; volume + and powerbutton, and see if that helps
I had a problem with the red exclamation mark when trying to load the recovery image on my phone after rooting with the method on theunlockr.com.
To solve it download a recovery image from here, rename it "update.zip" and placed it in the root of your sdcard.
Then boot up your phone and attempt to load recovery as before by pressing the power button and volume DOWN. When you get to the red exclamation mark screen, press and hold volume UP and the power button. This should bring up the Android system recovery. Select flash update.zip and this will flash and load the recovery image.
See here.

Hey, I've been doing this for few months now every time I need to enter recovery after I recovered from a bootloop for installing CM7.
However, is there a way to permanently remove this 'wrong' feature by having to manually click update.zip every time? Can I just restore my Legend back to the original state where it would automatically enter recovery without having to press "Vol Up + Power Button" combo and applying update.zip?
Thanks!

If you look at the top line of the bootloader screen it will have the phrase
'S-ON' somewhere; this means 'security on'. The result is that the /system and /recovery partitions are read-only.
There are instructions here on how to S-OFF the Legend. (xda discussion thread here)
I haven't done it myself. Personally, I felt that the risks of bricking and the time spent researching and doing it outweighed the benefits of a writeable /system and /recovery partition.

So are you saying that this "extra step" resulted from the fact that my phone is still S-ON? If that is so, I guess the benefits of this read-only system allows me to flash ROMs much easier (without having to connect to ADB).
Thanks!
I'm not sure if this is gonna help, but you can try pressing the "BACK" button while pressing power on?

Will pay to fix my A500

Not sure what happened exactly, but while flashing the newest update for a particular persons JB ROM (he will remain unnamed) everything went fubar. Bad. Wasn't recognizing my sd drive, couldn't flash a back-up, tried one of the solutions here on XDA.....now I am without recovery. The tab will boot up, but it gets to a password screen. I have no clue what the password is.
Though I can't pay a fortune, I am willing to pay someone to fix the tab. It's all based on trust since I will send you the tablet and trust that you will return it. Of course, I will pay for return shipping also. I love my tab, but it's useless to me currently.
Please PM me if you want to take on this task. Thanks.
replied to your 'other' post but i guess it should go here
from this thread here
a hard reset wipe userdata and cache
a manual hard reset will do the same thing if you do not have the unlocked bootloader
fastboot erase if you do have the unlocked bootloader
also a stock acer update.zip but I guess you've tried that, maybe a stock ics update.zip would work
I'd be happy to take a look at your tab for free, but being on the other side of the world doesnt make that feasible unfortunately!!
however I'm sure someone else closer to you will be more than willing to help
good luck with it m8

edit:
and this from here
For anyone still having this problem, I don't see a fix on this page and I managed to figure it out for myself despite being a total noob to this stuff. To be clear, this is what happened to me: I wanted to roll back to 3.0.1 and needed to start by doing a factory reset. To do that, I followed some instructions in the A500 forum that said to do the following:
1. Power Down
2. Make sure the Screen orientation is off (slide to left while landscape mode)
3. Hold down the right volume key (Volume up (+)).
4. Hold down the Power Button.
5. When it buzzes let go of the power but keep hold of the volume up button (+)
rock the screen orientation switch quickly back and forth once.
6. Should say :
Erasing Userdata....
Erasing Cache...
After doing those steps, after I got the Erasing Userdata message I then got an error about an invalid boot file. Then when it powered back up it asked me for a password and it wasn't taking the password I previously had on the device. I was freaked out that I bricked my tablet in my very first attempt at moving to a custom ROM so I frantically searched the Internet to no avail. But then I stumbled into a help topic on the Acer UK website when doing a Google search. When I watched the video in the help topic (click here to see it) I found that this may have happened because the steps are slightly different in the video than what I was given. I used the steps below instead and successfully performed the factory reset (differences bolded):
1. Power Down
2. Make sure the Screen orientation is ON (slide to right in landscape mode so orange is showing)
3. Hold down the right volume key (Volume up (+)).
4. Hold down the Power Button.
5. When it buzzes let go of the power but keep hold of the volume up button (+)
rock the screen orientation switch quickly to the off position and leave it off (don't toggle it like the instructions above say to do).
6. Should say :
Erasing Userdata....
Erasing Cache...
This worked for me anyway; I got the Erasing Userdata then Erasing Cache instead of the error message and then a password request. I just wanted to document the solution in case anyone ever needs it again.
No luck. Doing any of these things always brings me to Skrilax's bootmenu mode, but selecting Boot Recovery just brings up Android with an exclamation point in it.
Damn.

And no luck with Fastboot? --Larry
Nothing. When I choose fastboot, it just shows "fastboot mode“ at the top of the screen, but just sits there.

Have faith grasshopper!!!! Its just like running adb commands
Boot to fastboot mode
connect yr cable to PC
open cmd prompt from fastboot.exe folder (which is included in the sdk with adb.exe)
type in "fastboot devices"
it should return a ? - this means you're all good!
type in:
fastboot erase userdata
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot
to flash a recovery - u will need a recovery.img - I just used one out of civs nvFlash package
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot reboot
so now you should be fully wiped and have a recovery installed...if you get the dead android again, we'll head to the next step....and we'll need to know what rom you're actually running!!

I'm with you until "open cmd prompt from fastboot.exe folder (which is included in the sdk with adb.exe)" lol
Where do I find that folder?
When I plug in the cable to the PC, it just sits there in "fastboot mode".
You should have it if you have flashed the patched bootloader if not then see attachment:
extract the zip to say, C:\android (good idea to keep all yr flashing stuff in a folder like this)
dont actually open the folder where fastboot.exe is located, you want to press down
"shift" & right click on the folder itself to open cmd prompt -

You my friend, are a FREAKIN' genius!!!!
I love you! (Well, you know what I mean)
That did it! I may not ever flash a ROM again now since I'm flash-scared.
It's currently downloading the official updates from Acer.
I can not thank you enough!

no not me m8 just spent lots of time 'unbricking' and reading everything on here
The real geniuses are the devs who made fastboot possible for us in the first place. I hate to name names cos you invariably miss someone out but posts by Skrilax_CZ, vache, strra, civato, drellisdee, waydownsouth, yaworski - have all helped me to learn more about what our tabs can actually do....as you found yourself the really hard part is understanding the language these dudes use!!!! it hardly seems 'english' at all, lol
