Warranties... - Xoom General

Has anyone made any decisions yet on their warranty if they are getting one? I guess my choices are the BB Black Tie Program, VZW's "extended warranty" and SquareTrade. I have never had an experience with any one of them.
VZW requires a monthly payment, about $10 or so. SquareTrade is $129 for 3 years (+ an optional/additional $70 for accident, spill/water, & drop protection) and BB 2 year Black Tie program is about $160 if I recall and the 3 year program is through the roof.
I'm looking to see if anyone's had experience, particularly with SquareTrade, since when I do the math looking at it over a three year time frame, it seems to be the best deal because it's about $5.50 a month over that period.

--

I have used square trade and have found their service to be great.
Its also has the benefit of being transferable to anyo e you sell the unit to for free.
I went with the 1 year black tie in this case because I plan to trade the unit in at the end of the year when I hope the quad cores are out

1) Own Xoom for 11 months
2) in month 12 drop the xoom *woops*
3) Bring in to BBY and ask for store credit
4) Walk out with current gen tablet or $799.99 store credit in your pocket.
seems like a good deal to me.

That's not how it works. They are going to try and fix it, and if they cannot, you'll get store credit towards a new tablet

Squaretrade has a 30% discount today code MARCH) so I was thinking about getting add'l warranty. I've bought warranties from them before but never required their service so idk what they are like when they have to pay. However, my Xoom is still not even shipped yet LOL!

Bestbuy Trade in Program

Not sure if many people know about this or not but Bestbuy has a trade in program you can use for your older phone to upgrade to new phones such as the Nexus S or Evo 3D. No I'm not talking about the Buy Back Program because that you have to pay for. I looked at the price that they would give me for my Shift and turns out I can get $145.00 for it so yeah My upgrade is on June 1st So I think I might get the Nexus S which will only cost me about $65 bucks. Just wanted to share my findings with all of you. Pretty sweet deal considering The Nexus S is pure Android or I might wait for the Evo 3D because I'm sure they will be announcing it here soon.

Yep, wrong.
Trade-in's @ BB are free, but be prepared to take a pretty lowball offer if the phone is older than 6mo and not in mint condition. Also, all "cash" is given in Best Buy store credit or $ off your new phone through them.
Additionally, anyone who purchased a new phone prior to the last week in Feb is grandfathered into their Buyback program, no charge.
Just put your phone on craigs.bb offered me 20 for my hero trade in towards the shift.helll no! I sold a broken one for 35 lol

you're right i was thinking of the buyback program - http://goo.gl/wO0yz
I was also under the impression, you had to purchase your phone from BB to get them to offer any trade in value.
the no charge thing is not true. i purchased this phone in january and they were charging for it then. they did run a promotion for a week or two but when it was offered to me, it was $$ and not free.
do you have any links that say it will be free if purchased before end of Feb? That would be great.

Here's the updated BB BB FAQ link.
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/null/null/pcmcat232000050000.c?id=pcmcat232000050000&h=488
The important takeaways are:
1) Going forward, 50% off buying into the BB plan if you combine w/ the Geek Squad Black Tie protection plan (it's $10/month, and blows Sprint's insurance away - I've used this for the past 3 years and love it. So, it's an extra $20 upfront to get into the BB program.)
2) For mobile phones only, they'll give you a % of the RETAIL, not purchase cost. So, for example, you bought the Shift in Jan/Feb w/ your upgrade for $149, and you want to return it in July for the 3D. Provided your phone is in good shape, you'll get around $250 or so off the new phone regardless of upgrade. And if you're eligible for upgrade and in the BB program, you'll get your new phone for free, plus an extra $40 or so in store credits to purchase a case or larger SD card, etc..
From their website:
"How does the Buy Back Program work for mobile phones?
For mobile phones, the Buy Back provides exceptional value when you want to get the latest and greatest. The Buy Back Program for post paid mobile phones is based on the full retail price of the phone, not the discounted price of the phone. Your phone is typically discounted in price when you renew or sign up for a new contract. If the retail (non-contract) price is $600, your buy back value would be based on that amount, even if you purchased the phone for a lower price if the phone price was subsidized by the carrier.
For example: you pay $199 for a mobile phone which normally retails for $600 and also purchase the Buy Back Program. If you decide to redeem your buy back within 6-12 months of purchase, you will receive a Best Buy Gift Card in the amount of $240 (40% of the original retail price) to put toward your next purchase. "
again - it was free from superbowl week to feb 26th.
it wasn't free before that date completely.
From pcmag link:
What's Best Buy's Buy Back? In January, the retailer launched a program by which customers could pay $69.99 at the time of purchase to enter in to the program, for laptops, netbooks or tablets.
The program allows you to:
* Redeem your Buy Back within 6 months from purchase effective date, and get up to 50 percent of your purchase price
* Redeem your Buy Back after 6 months to 12 months from purchase effective date, and get up to 40 percent
* Redeem your Buy Back after 12 months to 18 months from purchase effective date and get up to 30 percent
* Redeem your Buy Back after 18 months to 24 from purchase effective date and get up to 20 percent
* For TVs only, redeem your Buy Back within 48 months from purchase effective date and get up to 10 percent
Phones command a special deal: the program is based on the retail price of the phone. If a subsidized price of a phone is $199 with contract, but the phone costs $600 unsubsidized, then the Buy Back value is based on the value of the phone. It's unclear what Best Buy will charge at the register, however.
For now, though, that doesn't matter - the Best Buy Buy Back program is free for both tablets and phones until Feb. 26. TVs are not affected.

Me thinks if you still have your receipt, you've got a fairly good shot of getting BB to honor it when/if you decide to get your next phone from them. I'd imagine they would like to keep a customer in this case. Worth a shot!

Right on, lol.....
Hell, if the Hero's are still selling for $100 on CL, then these phones can definitely command a price of $250 eaaaaaaaaaaasy.

This phone is available from Amazonwireless for $0.01 with a contract

Seriously just found it today (after reading an article that says its $50 on there), I gave it a shot and if you do a new VZW contract or do it as an upgrade the phone is $0.01 . Of course I STILL can't get it because my upgrade isn't for another month and no matter how much I ask VZW to do it early they won't (my Motorola Droid's keyboard is literally falling off as the glue holding the keys on melts from the heat of the processor, I tried gluing back on with no luck it melted away).
I'm sure this deal will still be around then but I'm getting antsy, and picking my keys up off the ground is annoying.

On a side note, the earliest that VZW will let you upgrade early is 1 week before your upgrade date.
Try and ask them that if they can hold the offer price for you when you upgrade in a month.
My carrier had an offer that saved 380~ dollars plus the savings from contracts, and it only lasted a week. Good thing my brother and I got ourselves brand new phones each
My courier let's you upgrade 4months in advance if you threaten to cancel the contract and resign with another company. Maybe that's what you should do.

Spoke to them today and they are giving me an early upgrade (good news) but I need to do it at the VZW store (bad news). VZW currently has it for $99 which is still a good deal (and I will probably get a $30 credit bringing it to $69) but to get it for a penny would be better. I'm going to call Amazon in the AM to see if they can see it on my account and do it for me, otherwise I'll head to the store and see what I can do. Considering how annoying the keypad screwing up on my droid is I may just eat the cost to have it a month earlier than planned.
Just to give an epilogue to this story, Amazon would not do the early upgrade (I don't blame them, it wasn't their authorization). Went to the VZW store, paid $150 with a $50 mail in rebate, no new every 2 credit (would have had to wait till Sept) so I lost $30 there, then sold my OG Droid to a recycler for $61 so my net cost is $39.
If I had waited I would have gotten the phone for a penny and made back the phone recycle cost (however I noticed those fluctuate a lot so who knows if I would have gotten $61 in a month, It was $80 2 months ago!). So really my net cost could be more, but my old phone was pissing me off to no end, so the price and the fact I'm having a blast with this phone already made it worth it.
PS I almost walked away from the deal because of the difference in price but realized in a month I don't even know if this phone will be available. They literally had 1 in the store, covered in dust and the Verizon guy said hes never even had anyone ask about the phone let alone buy it.
I bought my XP from Amazonwireless for $50, renewed my 2 year contract several months ahead of time
Amazon wouldn't let me do the purchase until I called VZW and told them I wanted a new phone and would get it through Amazon. My contact/every 2 wasn't over until 10/15/2011 or so. I called VZW, they lifted the resitriction and I purchased the phone from Amazon for $50. All I told Verizon was that I was going to get a new phone and renew my contract, I guess it helps that I'm a 10+ year customer.
Then I sold my OG Droid with GPA15 on ebay for $120.

Hmm I've been with them for 10+ yrs as well, but they wouldn't budge on that. You must be more persuasive than me. Ohh well, for $39 I can't complain.
true, a deal is a deal
They did this for me when I purchased my Droid from Amazon a few years ago also. I'm not aggressive or anything when I call, I just bring up a few facts (never late, long time, renewing) and they cut me some slack.

AT&T raising insurance rates & deductibles for Atrix & Iphone

Today I was unhappy to see that AT&T is raising insurance and deductible rates, significantly starting I believe the flyer said October 1st.
Old pricing:
$4.99/mo
$125 deductible
New pricing:
$6.99/mo
$199 deductible
Anyone else ditching their insurance?
Interesting rant on the AT&T forums about the iPhone insurance:
"I have just recently purchased an iPhone 3GS and procured insurance through Asurion. My bill: $11.99/month - $99/deduct - 24hr delivery.
As of September of 2011, ALL iPhone users will be forced to convert to AT&T's "new" iPhone insurance plan, (equal to that of Asurion's current coverage) if they want desirable coverage (including theft and water damage). The only problem with that is this: in October of 2011, the monthly rate will INCREASE from $4.99 to $6.99 and the deductible will be $199.99 for ALL iPhone models, even those that were not previously in the third tier (3G and 3GS). So, not only does AT&T have the audacity to raise their rates in an economically troubled time, they also slap us in the face before they bend us over with the $199.99 deduct when it was originally just under half of that.
I am very displeased with this insurance scam AT&T has going. It is ridiculous that we have to keep paying MORE for the same crappy and under-educated service we've been dealing with for years. I have been an AT&T wireless customer since I got my first cell phone and have not been with another carrier, but what choice do we have if we want the "best". Well, this could very well be my last venture with AT&T, if something isn't done about this insurance scam. I' expect to pay something for a refurb replacement, but not 2/3 of the retail value (again, for a refurb) when I also pay the monthly fee.
Insurance Scam Equation:
iPhone 3GS in-store retail (new) - $449
iPhone 3GS online retail (refurb) - from $300
12 months insurance (under 12 month factory warranty) - $84
iPhone deductible - $199
$199
+$84
-------
$283
$283 replacement with insurance.
$300 replacement without insurance.
So what's the deal here... or better yet, WHERE'S the deal? I'm saving a measly $17 dollars by paying monthly to AT&T for more headache than ever needed, especially when I can go buy one over the net with no headaches (next day shipping available) for the same price.... It would be more worth it if it was a NEW phone and not a refurb, but in almost all cases you're going to get a refurb. Sorry AT&T, I just don't get it. The only way this would ever be worth it is if I was to break my phone twice in 12 months, then I'd be saving a little more, but not enough to have any real meaning."
Also you can see the following:

Pay full price for phones. I bet you don't need insurance then. Or get through your own insurance. About a year ago I priced it and it was a little over $80 for a year coverage and $50 deductible. But that was about a year ago.
Sent from the coolest voided warranty phone ever.
Best Buy's is $9.99 per month, but with no deductible. It doesn't cover theft or "sub-merged" water damage but it covers pretty much everything else.
I prefer it because of the no deductible.

I'm going to start "losing" my phone. According to my friend who is a district manager of att stores in my area, if you report your phone "lost," not stolen, they will send you a brand new phone as opposed to a refurbished one. You can report a phone lost twice a year. So figure, lose it, sell on craigslist, make $100 or so, get a new phone...repeat. I felt bad at first, but now hearing about this I feel as though its justified. An eye for an eye

It may depend on how much you owe on breaking contract. The reality is if you have to fork out cash for a new phone you may as well go to another carrier and purchase a new phone......giving a free phone can keep them from losing a customer. Especially if they are giving you a new phone (same model) which is something you owned for 1.5 years that has depreciated in value anyways.
Yet for repairs and theft its better off to force the OEM to fix with warranty.... or fill out legal paperwork for reporting stolen property. In either of these cases its better to let ATT stand back and let somebody else fix the problem.
I have spoken with account cancellation services at ATT many times with the intention of striking a deal by merely pointing (politely) out the cost of going to another carrier is less than my current options....they are always willing to accomodate.

I wonder if this is related to the [potential] eventual AT&T-sanctioned unlocking of the Atrix bootloader?
I think it may also be due to the fact that an lte ATRIX is likely on the way...perhaps a launch phone for AT&T lte... would basicly be a cut/paste of the bionic.
Makes sense, once lte launches on AT&T any lte phone will also do hspa +... I expect it by the end of the year. And all of the people that purchased the original ATRIX may begin looking for a way out/upgrade....etc

1st The replacement is not a refurb but a new device (Iphones).
2nd It is Asurion, as the current coverage is $11.99 through them. And the deductible is actually $199 already with Mobile Protect. So for the IPhone it is actually lowering in price , SIGNIFICANTLY!!
3rd the 12 month warranty does not cover Loss/Theft. Lose your phone 3 months after purchasing it. What options do you have??
Of course the 3g/3gs are bit tough due to then original cost BUT for the IPhone 4 it is better than $450 to do an Early Upgrade and that is only after 6 months from upgrading/activating.
4th You always have the option of finding your own coverage through a 3rd party not affiliated with Asurion and AT&T (i.e State farm or Square Trade.)
BTW The insurance monthly rate will be $6.99 for all devices starting Oct. 1st. same $50 deductile for basic devices, $125 for advanced devices and $199 for IPhones.
Not to ruffle feathers of any kind but just wanted to clarify this.

I just got off the phone with AT&T Enterprise. The date for insurance change is October 4th, not October 1st. Also, this will not be limited to the iPhone regarding the tier change. The AT&T system does not yet show which phones will change to tier 3, but this information will be available on or before October 4th. So, it could be very likely the Atrix along with other smartphones will be added to the new tier.

Also not trying to ruffle feathers.............just clarifying on an incorrect clarification!
Instead of the "insurance fraud route" *rolls eyes*
It would probably be much better to look into something like Squaretrade. They constantly float 30% discounts around.
Current code today is SUMMER ... (Max discount $30 per warranty)

I thought without insurance to cost to replace a phone is the full non-contract price. If so, that $283 vs $300 comparison is incorrect.

Extended Warranties?

So I was looking into possibly getting an extended warranty for my nexus 7. I purchased it from Sam's club, which offers 2 additional years for $20 (anyone ever bought this before, how is it?).
I was also considering a square trade warranty. They are $23, and for an extra 26 you can add accident coverage. Anyone ever bought through them before? Plus i got a 30% off coupon today.
Also when it says 2 years is that from today, or is it like Sam's club that extends the warranty 2 years making it 3 total.
Thanks for your input.

I dont, they are all one use per coupon. But check this thread on slickdeals as a bunch of people are posting ones they received to use http://slickdeals.net/f/4891980-Squaretrade-30-off-check-your-email
Definitely Square Trade Warranty. The B&M ones are ridiculous. Office Depot said their's was $79.99. That's 1/3 of the Nexus 7!!!?!??!?
Just got one with Accidental Damage for $34.99 with the 30% off coupon. No need for a case anymore. Just guna use and abuse my Nexus 7.
30% off coupon code came out again today from Square trade.

Did you buy Squaretrade Protection Plan?

I've had my Note Pro for 16 days now and I know I will be keeping it. I have been contemplating on getting a accident protection plan because the tablet is so big & one small drop could kill it instantly. Di any of you purchase an accident protection plan...either Squaretrade or other...and if so are you glade you did? I have always had Assurion for my phones &never needed it until a few months ago when I dropped my Note 2 on concrete & cracked the screen. It was worth it to me at the time...
Thanks!!!

Yup this is my second note pro. First one was a total loss and was uninsured when I lost it by accident (stupidity really). On my second purchase I got squaretrade. No regrets, just peace of mind. Don't pay full price, Google for discount codes.

I've been looking for a coupon code and went through about 30 pages of google searches but all the codes were expired or used. I signed up for their newsletter & got a 20% off code but I seen codes that were 30-40%...With the 20% a 2 year plan will cost $95 (plan+ NYS tax) but i was hoping to bring it down a bit more if possible...
Well I decided to just call Squaretrade and ask for a discount and they gave me 30% off. So I did a 2 year $75 deductible plan for $79 and NO NYS sales tax!!! I hope I never need it but it's good to know I can get a new tablet if something were to happen!! If I didn't plan on using my tablet at work I'd probably wouldn't worry about a plan...but anything can happen out of the house!
***EDIT*** Well it looks like they did charge me NYS sales tax but still it was only $86....

I have purchased square plans for 4 devices now and have never had to use it. Two of the devices were sold on eBay at about 13 months old and I believe the plan helped mine sell very quickly as other units for sale on eBay that were less money had not. The warranties are transferable so that is also a plus. Sometimes you can get a better price on purchasing your plan from Amazon, Newegg or Tigerdirect even with a discount code direct from Squaretrade
