Obviously I'm leaning towards epic but can anyone just tell me how much better it is? O and does epic have cm and snap?

i just switched from evo to epic friday. i like the epic, the colors are better, the keyboard is awesome. youll notice the screen size diff at first but then itsfine. no CM or snap yet, just really like 3 roms out right now. but itll get better. in my opinion its ab tter switch, but ive always needed the keyboard. if youre fine without a keyboard then its not that great of a diff.

The community support is not bad...we actually have quite a bit..its just the device has not been out as long and a lot of people are not used to HTC, most of the development now is being done by people who did development on other Samsung devices such as the Moment. The developers who came from HTC are doing things but not as quickly as they are not used to it.
That said, I usually used custom roms before but for my Epic I'm pretty happy with Stock and Root for backup and Tethering.
What do you mean by cm and snap? if cm is Cyanogen then its coming...
The battery life is OK, better if you configure Juice Defender or use energy saving Kernal and maybe kill mediahub..but stock vs stock Epic has a bit better battery then Evo

pretty sure theres a kernal thatssets it to overclock when needed. better batter life with that kernal too. ive only tried one so far so cant say bout the other one(s)

i like my epic a lot, i havent gotten a chance to experience the EVO in full yet, but i know from having the mts that htc makes some of the best quality phones. Samsung did ok on this one, as far as physical build and keyboard ill give it a 7/10. 4 inch S-AMOLED screen is crazy.. but i cant wait til sprint/htc does a similar to the epic, because that will be truly epic

I was deciding between Evo and Epic too before finally getting an Epic. To me software is something that can be improved upon but hardware is what it is and cannot be changed. Samsung's support is not on par with HTC but they've pushed 2 updates out already in the last month, so maybe there's hope. And with simple tweaks I've got GPS working nicely as well as fairly good battery life (airplan mode and disable drm). So far I've been happy with the phone and I think it'll be amazing once Froyo is out.

I took my evo back to the store a few weeks ago and traded for an epic. I was not impressed with the hardware of the evo. I would much rather have the cpu and gpu of the epic for future games etc..
Run the ocean waves live wallpaper on the evo and see for yourself, it starts chugging and epic runs it flawless...

Evo has problems too..it boils down to which problems you prefer Evo problems or Epic problems (no pun intended lol)
For me personally I have no problems yet on my Epic :/

What problems does the EVO have these days?
From my understanding, the light leakage has been address, 30 fps caps been lifted and wifi fixed. Is there anything else?

Video capture is still horrible, audio doesn't sync with video at times, taking pictures with low light has not improved. If the EVO fixed that i'd still be on it. Camera sucks on the EVO.

Well, if you're still wavering... the Epic's keyboard looks nice, but IMHO it was compromised into uselessness thanks to the flat keys with almost no space in between. The problem is that I can't use my thumbs to effortlessly type on it, because I keep hitting two or more keys. Had they compromised its appearance a bit by using keys that were 2/3 as wide and long (with the same center pitch), or significantly raised the keycap centers, it would be fine. Unfortunately, they didn't, so it's not. By the same token, holding it with my left hand and using my right index finger gets tiring quickly, and the phone wobbles due to the screen's weight if I try to type on the keyboard while the phone is laying on a table.
The keyboard design of the Epic just has me shaking my head wondering whether they even bothered to test its usability with real people before committing to the design, or whether they told their designers, "make it look pretty in pictures, and keep the profile low" and decided that actual usability didn't matter.
Sigh. I can't wait for 3D printers to become cheap enough to enable things like aftermarket retrofit parts for things like the Epic that come from the factory "not quite right" by design, but could probably be hacked into comfy usability if there were a cost-effective way to make custom plastic parts in small quantities. Then someone could just make a kit that let you disassemble the lower half of a stock Epic, then reassemble the circuit board in a new bottom enclosure that made the keyboard nicer to use, and maybe added a slide-latch to lock the slider closed for added solidity when it's stowed...

I owned an evo up till the epic came out. I switched because I worked on the processor inside the epic and wanted to own something that I helped to make.
I had a lot of reservations about switching. Chief among them was the support that Samsung would give the phone. I read the horror stories about the moment, but decided to jump in.
Well two updates in I'm gonna go ahead and say that the epic is already at a point where I am as happy with it as I was with my evo. It took 5 months to get my evo to a point where the battery life was acceptable and the phone was running smooth. As of yesterday, I've resolved my battery issues (clean install of the latest update and no restoration of original settings). All this while running 2.1. I'm giddy with excitement over what 2.2 could bring.
In my opinion, people that list touchwiz as a negative simply havent experienced it for themselves. I never liked HTC sense and always preferred ASOP. That said, once you replace the touchwiz launcher (which really is pretty crappy), you're left with things that touchwiz, in my opinion, does better than sense. For one, there are the shortcuts that allow you to toggle wifi, 4g, gps and bluetooth in the dropdown notification menu. This allows you to toggle these settings in any app without exiting to the home screen. Then theres the brightness slider on the notification bar that I use more times than I can count. When you get down to it, the only thing sense has going for it are the widgets. And the widgets can all be had, at a small cost, on the epic 4g via launcherpro plus and beautiful widgets.
The screen is amazing, the keyboard is more useful than I thought it would be. As is the hardware camera button. The only glaring defects are the GPS and the capacitive buttons. Now dont get me wrong, these two are pretty serious and potentially dealbreaking problems. But I have faith that the GPS can be fixed. And as far as the capacitive buttons go, I'm slowly getting used to them...

[Q] Rooted Evo vs Rooted Epic

I searched through the forums quite a bit and even good but have yet to find anything specific. I'm not sure which phone to get since I can not find a rooted comparison.

Main Points:
Weight and size are not an issue: Glass screen is a +
Price is not an issue.
Standard Mini USB charging is a +
Battery life is not so important.
Texting Speed is 100% most important item - my hero can not keep up with my fingers and it is beyond frustrating.
I know this is the Epic forum so I can't say I don't expect you to be bias, but it would be nice to hear anything at all. Just wanted to hear how the phones compare as BOTH rooted devices with all speed benefits.

As of now the epic has an issue where it will miss keys on the physical keyboard every so often. Txlexting speed is also very important to me (I have an epic) and I have been dissappinted with the physical keyboard to say the least. That being said, the evo does not even have a physical keyboard and you could use any keyboard from the evo on the epic. The app "Smart keyboard" is the best of all that I have tried. The screen on the epic is also substantially better than the evo. The evo gets updates before the epic because it is an htc phone so that is always something to consider. Good luck.

If you fancy yourself with modding then an Evo is a clear cut winner. There are much more Roms, Mods, and source codes are always released first for HTC phones. Samsung has a history of not really supporting their devices. Epic is no exception. Actually, I completely forgot to mention, I don't know that I would use the keyboard much anyway. I guess if it was there, I may start to use it, but I like the touch screen keyboard, I'm quite fast with them. In fact I still use T9 a LOT, especially while I'm driving. So as far as the keyboard goes, not a huge pro/con for me. When I mention texting speeds, I just want the phone to be able to keep up with me. My experience with the HTC hero is bad in the sense that I'll be waiting every few words for the phone to catch up so I can check for errors before continuing to type.

Great news. I've been leaning towards the evo... looks like it's decided. Thanks again MLHickey.
Last note is, should I wait for early 2011 in case HTC releases something crazy. I mean, I can live on my HTC hero a few more months if I need to.

Just thought as an epic owner Im obligated to reply. The choice is a hard one, but the epic is faster, a better screen (even if slightly smaller) and since its basically stock android doesnt need roms like cynagen to be super fast and its only slightly thicker then the evo. You also get better battery life on the epic.
As for the keyboard, its really not that bad, and a keyboard is better then nothing at times when touch typing just isnt working out as planned.
I had the same hard decesion and luckily when I was visiting home a few weeks ago I got to play with my parents evo. Don't let the benchmarks fool you, the epic is much faster, plus that screen, you get size shock from the evo, but color and contrast shock from the epic. Plus you can install htcs awesome on screen keyboard on the epic. Its the best of all worlds in my book. The evo will have faster updates though, but really.. updates are almost superficial because by time android 2.2 is unsupported should they stop there you will likely be getting a new phone. Gps might or might not work better on the evo, some epics are fine, others aren't.

But what about Epic's ugly azz cool color temperature?! Whites look grey on it, screen has blue tint... sorry, photographer coming out in me, but Evo's colors are much more accurate.

I'm not tryna sound biased but u gotta be kidding me.. maybe ur gf's usage is much higher.. honestly 4 of my friends have evo's and whenever we're chilling on either of our houses, they fight over the charger.. although my epic is rooted and has custom rom+kernel and their evo doesn't but even b4 i rooted mine i had much better battery life..

The keyboard on this thing is not great, but it beats having none. WPM will not be high with this keyboard, although accuracy is not bad. Still, coming from a Hero, I really like having a keyboard now.
The main gripe is Samsung's poor support, small ROM, and the gps on this thing.
If you text a lot, this should still be your choice as it is faster than virtual keyboards.

No. I have asked about the Evo's battery life and I quite frequently hear it hardly makes it through the day from people who DO own them. I've had mine unplugged with moderate use and plenty of calls since 7am and its at 40% right now at 11PM. Now to be fair.. my Epic is rooted with the battery sucking processes from Sprint/Samsung cut out, the Evo's i've heard about are stock. If both were rooted you'd probably cut similar results.
They both have 1500MAH batteries, they will both be roughly the same if you cut the fat out of each I imagine.
As for the screen, yeah the colors are not as accurate, but you're not going to notice, they have a cooler look to them which bothers the heck out of graphics designers and the like heh heh but really.. it's still stunning in comparison to the evo, but thats just MY opinion.
You really need to go into the Sprint store and play with both as much as you can.... you really can't go wrong with either of them and their pro's and con's split pretty evenly.

1) for the keyboard issue..try disabling Swype and use the hardware kb.
2) Epic even with the custom roms we have is doing fairly well...I mean take all the custom roms on the EVO and the Epic and you'll notice there isn't too much difference...most of the advantages EVO had was gotten from the Nexus One which hopefully we will get from the Nexus S.
3) You can do a bunch with custom roms on the EVO to make it run smoother but It'll never run as smooth as the epic.
4) The colors can't be more accurate on the EVO because its only 64k colors..if anything Droid X has probably the most accurate colors...but since EVO is only 64k colors it won't be accurate...the Super AMOLED tends to be mroe blue because the blue dies out the fastest...over time it balances itself out...on my device though if I set it to 100% brightness its white as I lower the brightness it turns grayish..but thats what lowering brightness is suppose to do...
5) Yeah.. texting while driving is bad...
6) Battery life varies by your usage..overall though if you configure it best you can on both devices Epic will win.

i had to read that twice, he wasnt talkin about you only having two cents... he was referring to owning both phones... just kinda seemed like u took that the wrong way...

Personally, I never got to actually play around with an evo but I will say these things about my epic:
The keyboard, though sometimes annoying, is a great bonus to have for those who text/email/im/fb/whatever a lot. And you can bring the htc keyboard over to the epic as well.
The battery life on custom roms/kernels seems to be better when compared to most evo scenarios (I don't have an evo so don't quote me)
The color temps can be fixed using voodoo color.
The phone DEFINITELY responds better to user input than the evo, hands down (probably due to the evo having so much bloat, and also due to the better built cortex processor)
Updates on the evo happen more quickly, this is very true. But our devs have done a great job fixing MOST of our major issues.
This is a big one that people seem to be failing to mention. The new froyo modems seem to FIX gps PERMANENTLY. I've been running wifi on my epic for days without a reboot and gps is on hot start (not using the cold start workaround) and every time I get a full lock within seconds (using gps status).
All in all, I love my epic and the way it runs thanks to our community, but if you want a more reliable manufacturer (and a community that isn't chock full of spoiled brats who's parents bought them the phone), go with the evo.
If you can deal with the slower updates and the forum nonsense, go with the epic.

I wonder how many kids actually are on these forums when I was 12 I wasn't looking for ways to hack my cell phone... then again when I was 12 I think that Motorola "flip" phone that looked like something outta star trek was the most popular one for being so "portable". lol

Evo or Evo Shift

I currently have a Moment (and it sucks: which is why I don't want an Epic yet alone another Samsung).
I'm wanting a new phone that can handle 3d games without lagging.
I have heard that the new Evo Shift will have the same 800mhz chip that is in the new G2. That chip has been overclocked to a stable 1.6ghz and getting over 3000 in Quadrant.
Also the other rumor is that the Shift will have an upgraded GPU. Which is even better.
Honestly the 3.8" screen isn't that much smaller than the screen on the Evo. It could be the perfect size.
Plus it has a physical keyboard.
Truthfully, it sounds like I already made up my mind. But I guess I have to wait until specs and reviews are out for this phone.

If the 3D gaming is that important, and it was concerning the two, than sure I think most would suggest the Shift.
But at this point I'd also suggest seeing what's on the horizon and truth be told Sprint doesn't have the grandest selection but I can see that changing. Some big **** around the corner, but if now - or soon - a new phone is needed and that's what your primary concern is, then the Shift probably your best bet.

True. But the super amoled screen of the epic is awesome. I actually like that than the evo. It really is all up to what the final specs are off the Shift.

if gaming is what you want, shift could be for you. do not get the shift for the keyboard. i can type faster on swype than i ever could with a slide out. you might not think .4 inches is much, but the evo screen is much bigger than the shift screen. i'd look at both side by side and see.

Personally, I would wait for something else all together.
Something with a better processor & gpu. This summer should have what you're looking for (although maybe not from HTC).

If you want games then, as said, the Shift is probably for you.
As for physical keyboards, overrated. When I had a Samsung Intercept while my EVO was being "serviced" by Best Buy I only used it because the touch screen was so useless on that thing.
Typing on the EVO is awesome. Keys are bigger than any slide out since the screen is so big. It all comes to preference though.

The EVO has so much more activity before it was released. And the Dev community is great on the EVO.

Latest spoiler from a feed that I'm subscribed to only has this Shift with a 5 mega-pixel camera not 8 and no front camera.
If this is true then I will not get this phone. I'll buy a pair of EVO's off eBay and save my upgrades for something better.

Why not consider the epic. You had an old samsung phone that sucked? Well I had an old htc phone that sucked 2 years ago, but all phones are different.
The samsung galaxy s line is really fast, and with the new ext4 mod on the epic, its crazy fast, like nexus s fast.
If you care about a keyboard, gaming, and camera quality the epic will be as good as or better than the shift.
And don't fall into the mega pixel trap when comparing cameras. The evo camera aint great and video sucks. The shift will be just like the tmobile g2, which is very good. Finally the epic takes pictures and video that rival the iphone in quality, which is to say the best in class for cellphones. With the epic , you can leave your digital camera at home.
Really do a thorough comparison of the epic and evo shift in person before you decide. Don't let yourself be fooled by differnces in 2.1 vs 2.2 software or touchwiz vs sense. You will have changed all your software in a week anyway with xda.

LOL difference is everyone was hesitant to jump back on with Samsung, and for good reason. At least these people that were nervous can sleep easy knowing they were right and that Samsung hasn't done much to change the tune others sing. And when the day arrives that I leave my digitial camera at home and rely SOLELY on a phone ... well, heck, that probably wont happen for a while. I've seen pictures taken with a crappy old 3mp digital cam that look crisper and better in every sense of the word.
Samsung dropped the ball, Epic has nice hardware but they don't compare to HTC. And HTC may not have a perfect track record in the past but they have definitely stepped it up lately.
The Galaxy S phones have been pretty down the middle, some good to go with all that bad.
edit; don't want to discount the fact that the Epic is a decent phone, will be the 3rd best Sprint offering (Whoa - never thought I'd give Sprint props like that) but it should at least "irk" you, and maybe not you directly, with how the whole Galaxy S phones have been handled. Especially with all the talk of Android not getting updates and Samsung support being piss poor. 2.1 treats it fine, my buddies epic flies sure but Touchwiz is horrid and the state of support or lack thereof should be the straw that breaks the camels back or however the hell that goes. I couldn't see anyone honestly suggesting the Epic over the Shift though, as was my point. And the Mega pixel jab, that was true and maybe a low blow but when people hear someone saying "this camera ownz leave dat digi at home, homeboi" it only sets people up for disappointment. Truly and honestly. That's a slight(ly bogus) exaggeration. If not, you must not possess a decent shooter. And no, I'm not talking about the one on the back of the phone.

i know 3.8 doesn't sound much smaller, but when you see them side by side the difference is significant. if I was buying a phone now is go with the 4.3” HTC Thunderbolt coming out in a few days on Verizon.

epic... is good.
but there are things that just add up.. to point me away from the epic.
these things have been discussed many times.
I just want to point out 1 thing.... the backing of HTC products in XDA and other forums by Devs. the choices !!!!!!
that is top of my list for any phone.

As you can see from side by side pictures the screen is incredible small against the EVO generation 1. I would agree with the others, wait for CES, i'm sure sprint have a EVO 2 around the corner, after using a 4.3 inch screen i don't want to go down to smaller, just my opinion. To me the shift might be a little bit better for gaming, albeit it's not a HUGE step up. If it had the hummingbird cpu i would say get it, but even now dual cpus moving in, so just try to be patient, because in the long run you will regret it, especially if you're on contract.

Thanks for the links man, my wife has been smitten with the Evo Shift since I originally found leaked pics of it and she'll be excited to see a video of it being used. I've been trying to get her to wait to see what else comes out or to perhaps get a regular Evo but she is convinced she needs a keyboard (I felt the same way but now that I use Swype 99 times out of 100 I wish I had gotten an Evo and not an Epic but such is life). Anyways, I'm looking forward to reading the Evo Shift board and hope some of the veterans of the Evo board help out over there (assuming the similar form factor extends to the software architecture...Hey, I've got an epic and none of the related phones offer any software relatability lol)

Epic vs shift?

My upgrade comes through on March 1st.. I've looked into each of these phones with great detail. This is what I've come up with in a nutshell. And I want everyone's professional opinion as ill be using this phone for a year or two.. thx guys and gals..(is there a girl on xda yet? ;p)
Stock pros of shift: pocket friendly, higher quality exterior, possibly more support on xda, I heart HTC.
Stock pros of epic 4g: better battery life, amoled screen, front facing camera, video card for twice the gaming potential
Both are 99.00 on Amazon with upgrade eligibility (so is the evo, but I don't need a tablet just yet, 4" is quite enough for me) .. I use sprint im not switching its cheap.. I'd rather have a steak then slightly improved cell service. I have wifi at home anyways..

My wife has a shift and I have an Epic. Her phone is more stable and her camera takes noticeably better pictures. The keyboard is also better on the shift as sometimes the keys skip on the Epic. As far as froyo is concerned it is much more stable on the Shift as well.
When on the shift section of xda I noticed a lot of people got the phone for their wives and not for themselves. They say games don't run as smoothe on the shift such as psx rom.games. and there is no phone on the market that I've layed my hands on that has a prettier screen than the epic. The colors are just plain and simply better. The phone isn't the eye catcher the epic is
I would go personally with the Epic in hopes of sprint and Samsung getting their act together and fixing the numerous bugs that are associated with it. You'll definetely have a love hate relationship with the epic but I believe in the long run you'll be better off with it.

At this point id say wait for the next round of phones as there'll be dual core options. Also, my gil has the evo and i the epic and they are about the same size overall, not too much difference.

If you can wait for the next round of phones I would, since they'll probably be out this summer. If you can't, the Epic is a good phone. I'm currently on EB 13 and I did a fresh install and then loaded all of my apps manually. There's still problems with the sport mode in the camera, Time without signal (TWS) being high unless you do the airplane mode toggle, and the camcorder being a little sluggish in low light. These aren't deal breakers for me, because I don't really use the phone for low light recordings or sport mode and I'm fine toggling the airplane mode. However, it would be nice to have this fixed. I haven't experienced any of the other bugs people have claimed, so I'm still very happy with the performance of EB 13, but I'm not holding my breath for a fix. I mainly stay on EB 13 because the battery life for me is drastically better than 2.1 and the performance is no worst than 2.1. The screen is a lot better as well.
Like I said before, I hope they fix the problems, but I wouldn't buy a phone assuming they will......

IMO, it all boils down to this..
If you want a KB, get the Epic, if you don't get the EVO
The EVO shift is simply not a high end phone, no matter how it was marketed.
It is not a matter of speed, but just a lack of to many high end features.

I would really say it boils down to you really wanting to mod it I have an epic and I've been pretty happy with having it rommed to froyo until. Although some of the hardware glitches or software do kinda get annoying. I still think it's pretty descent.
The shift I'm assuming is a descent phone as well and I heard the keyboard is way better then epic, so it really comes down to preference I really think.
Best advice I can say is go to the sprint store and play with both of them for about 30 minutes, like literally 30 minutes.

I own both. Epic has a nicer screen and is faster for games. Shift seems to be better for literally everything else.
But if you like to tweak endlessly, Epic may be more your speed.

Epic by a gazillian times. The screen is simply amazing! And the gpu screams. Along froyo with ext filesystem, it even beats the super dual core tegra Atrix phone. Trust me... Epic is hands down best. I owned a Evo and a shift. Both underperform compared to Epic.

The shift is something I would recommend to my grandma. though i wouldn't recommend a android phone to any tech impaired person( as my grandma is, fuuuu dont even get me started.)

From what it seems, the Shift is a less expensive/toned-down alternative to the Epic and Evo. So you're more or less comparing two differently classed phones.
Also, I love the keyboard on the epic. It's very roomy and comfortable, especially with its five rows. Plus, the Super AMOLED screen is gorgeous and a serious selling point. And regarding support on XDA, the Epic has nearly 10 times more threads and posts in each sub-forum.
I've never actually owned a Shift, but just from the numbers it seems the Epic is a much better deal, especially since they are the same price on Amazon. But waiting for Sprint's next lineup of Android phones seems like a good choice as well.

Not sure if it makes a difference to you or not, but thete is now a fix fir the cameta issues in eb13. Keepin' the faith that sprint will release a more stable update soon. In the mean time get the epic and trust in the great devs we have here.

Shift out performs evo.. epic has it beat on the graphics end. at least according to benchmark apps. I think I'm going to go with the shift for now... ill just add another line late this summer to try and get another phone..

I've had the Epic and the Evo, not the Shift tho. But I've played with the Shift for a while and one thing that surprises me is HOW HEAVY it is! For the weight difference, I'd almost just get the Epic. Regardless... if you want a billion ROM's that's hard to decipher and just really be confused most of the time, get an HTC. Tho, I will say their stock ROM's hand Samy's rear to them. The build quality on all three phones I would say are on par with each other.
The GPS on the Evo is AMAZING! I ALWAYS get a quick lock (within 5-10 seconds of opening up maps), and after 15-20 seconds, it's accurate to 3m (9 feet!), the Epic, not so much. After about 30 seconds, it'd lock, and only be accurate to 20m (60 feet!?!). As for using navigation on the phone, again, I would buy a garmin or tom-tom before I'd use the Epic's navigation.
Bottom line, yeah, if you need a phone that just works, any HTC is the way to go. BUT, the screen, size of keyboard, how good it plays games, did I mention the screen quality? are unmatched on the Epic. Hardware-wise (beyond maybe the GPS), the Epic is unbeaten.

Untrue. Stop using Quadrant and Linpack (outdated benchmarks that are optimized for Snapdragon) and you'll see that it is simply not the case.
MHz for MHz, the Qualcomm MSM SoCs are slightly more powerful than the Hummingbird, but at 800 MHz they still fall behind the 1 GHz S5PC110.

I was using smartbench what do u think of that one?

Shift is good, but the epic is on a whole other level, in terms of hardware. Stock the shift has the better software, but if your going to mod your phone with some of the awesome xda dev software.......that's where you'll see what I mean by being on a whole other level. Don't wait to long to trade your new shift in and get a real upgrade

i agree, the epic was good for a time, but, samsung stinks at giving out updates, htc sense looks WAY better than touchwiz. all in all,evo shift rocks!!!!!!!!!

My first android phone was the HTC Droid Eris, which I loved. Prior to the HTC Droid Eris I had a HTC Pocket PC with Window mobile 5.0. I loved the HTC phone but hated the operating system. I actually down graded to non-smart phones (two LG) and found they were better then the windows mobile os. Anyway, after the HTC Droid Eris I switched to Sprint and my only option for a real keyboard was the Samsung Moment. Lets just say I dumped my Samsung Moment before I was due for an upgrade and ran straight back to HTC. I love my HTC Evo Shift.
In my experience, Samsung does a poor job of paying attention to the small details that shouldn't be forgotten. The Samsung Moment's touch screen sensitivity was total crap. I found my self having to almost pound on the Samsung Moment's Screen. When I switched to the HTC Evo Shift the touch screen sensitivity was great. The Samsung Moment forgot the haptic feedback with the touch sensitive menu, home, and back buttons at the bottum of the phone. Really?! Now I can't really compare the two phones completely since the htc evo shift is definitely better regarding hardware, but I can tell you that my first experience with Samsung phones is that they are not very good with their designs. To be honest I was so completely turned off to Samsung phones that I didn't even give Samsung's newer Android devices a chance. I was told by a Sprint repair rep that generally HTC and LG make better phones then Samsung.
Don't let the 800mhz rating on the processor fool you. This phone is fast. In fact, per pdadb-dot-net, the processor in the HTC Evo Shift has an clock frequency range of 800mhz to 1,000mhz. According to Phil Nickinson writing for androidcentral, "Power under the hood
And the Shift has quite a bit of muscle, with Qualcomm's single-core MSM7630 processor running at 800MHz. It's worth repeating at this point that you shouldn't read too much into the Shift's processor running at 800MHz instead of the 1GHz chip we see in other HTC phones, including the original EVO 4G. It's a different architecture. Think of water rushing through a pipe. The pipe's larger on the Shift, so you can push more water (data) without having to push it as fast. It's more efficient. Add to that the 512MB of RAM and 2GB of ROM on which to store applications, and you won't be worried about whether you've got enough muscle to get the job done. In daily use, it's fast, fast, fast."
My personal opinion, skip Samsung and go with HTC. No phone is perfect, but I have found that HTC does a good job of producing good hardware for any smartphone os, in general. I also have found that HTC support generally stands by their product and I have had positive experiences with HTC support when I had my HTC Pocket PC.

The 2GB of ROM is a lie.

I'm quite pleased with my Shift!
Pro's:
-Nice hardware keyboard
-GREAT battery life
-Pretty sturdy
-Screen size (800x480 resolution, which is the same as the EVO, packed into a smaller screen--pixel density isn't quite iPhone-like, but it looks great to me!)
-CPU
Con's:
-A bit on the chunky side (size/form factor is about the same as the original Droid/Droid 2)
-Display isn't QUITE as nice as others (SAMOLED...)
-HTC Sense (Don't take my word for it though; some people love the Sense UI, but I think a custom ROM without it feels way snappier and more fun to use)
My advice? It really depends on your preferences. If a hardware keyboard is a must-have for you, then get this phone! I think you'll be very happy with it, and I doubt there's any other keyboard-equipped android phones headed Sprint's way any time soon. If you don't quite need a hardware keyboard, then I say WAIT. The EVO 3D is scheduled to land in the summer. A 4.3" screen is just too big to hang with, you say? I've also heard (somewhat reliable) rumors floating around about another HTC with a 4" screen (basically a Sprint version of the Incredible S landing around the same time). So in just a short while, you will have options galore!

I love the phone.....before it I had the Samsung Epic.....it was nice for a short while until you use it enough to find all the little problems with it.....i did not like the Epic's keyboard.....on the other hand I love my shift.....HTC Sense is ok......but if you don't like it there is CM7......I love the Shift's keyboard and HTC has great customer service....Samsung does not keep up on the phones that are already put out.....if there is a problem they just put out a new phone (Samsung Moment-Intercept-Transform) and leave the people that have the older phones behind with all sorts of problems......HTC is the best android phone maker for sprint I have found...hope this helps

Ikr....my shift last all day with just sending text messages....the only problem i have with the battery is if i loose sprint service and it searches or if i need to use it i put it on roaming.......then the battery time goes down but if im on sprint service and not running every app on my phone the battery lasts a long time...

I'd say if I had to do it all again and buy a new phone, I'd get two EVO Shifts . One for daily and one for testing new roms. Best phone I've ever had hands down . On a 1 to 10, it's a 13

With my old-school phone 1500 mAh was enough. With a smartphone, and using it as a smartphone 1500 mAh is totally inadequate. I had to buy a Mugen 3600 mAh to correct this. Now my usage between charges is great.

I am coming from a Samsung Moment that I couldn't stand anymore. The Shift is amazing. My fiance also got a Shift before me after I told her it seems HTC makes the best phones on Sprint. Everything just works. Unlike that POS Samsung phone where it still doesn't work right.

I am coming from a G2. I wanted to know would I be missing out on anything? Sure vanilla android (blah blah) I don't want to miss out on a MAJOR factor just by switching

My friend has the G2 and I don't think you'll be missing out on anything. The Shift is a great device imo. The keyboard may be a little better on the G2 but its still really solid... If you want stock Android there's plenty of good ROMs out there.

I'm happy with mine.
Battery life is excellent. I can generally make it 2 days on a charge (7am Monday to 10pm Tuesday). The keyboard is quite usable. The size is not too big, but not too small.
Had an epic for a couple weeks. Never used the FFC. Felt cheap and light and plasticy. Battery lasted one day, maybe. Screen was gorgeous though.
