Hello all I got my first Nexus One yesterday I know I should root it but I've never dropped the cash I did for a device I know there is a chance of a brick. I need to let the newness wear off.
But the purpose of this post is any suggestions on specific apps for the Nexus I can try out in the market. There are some that Ive read in this forum some but maybe some were left out.
Thanks in advance.
Just sayin, but the only real chance of a brick is to let your battery die or pull it while flashing the radio. (to my understanding)
try the XDADevelopers app, it's pretty nifty.

Just make sure your battery is charged, you probably won't brick this phone unless your trying to.
While there's not much of a chance for bricking, it supposedly does void your warranty. Some people have been able to get work done even after unlocking though.
With that said, I thought the same thing and thought I would wait about a month before I unlocked it, but that lasted about 2 days lol.
I unlocked it and flashed Cyan's ROM and haven't looked back since.

If you didn't engrave it, don't root it yet. Use it for a week or two, make sure there's no reason to return/replace it due to some defect. If there is no reason, then root it =)
My only 2 reasons for rooting it are: WiFi tethering and Flashlight. Imo, there are no other real reasons to do it, stock rom is extremely well done and I didn't notice much difference between it and Cyan.
Just root it..you'll truly own your phone then. Unless you don't know how to read and follow instructions properly or are just plain incompetent..which I doubt you are since you found this forum~ the chances of bricking are low.
Root it and never look back.
Nah, give it a few days to let any hardware issues make themselves known, then root it if your of a mind.
If you don't root it, all you are going to be able to think about is rooting it. I say use it for a few days to make sure all the hardware is good and go for it. I think I lasted about 36 hours before giving in and I told myself that I wasn't going to do it!

I, too, have the same fears and concerns... so I've never really attempted to root the phone nor tried to. I guess I just like it the way it is.

My reasoning for wanting to root it, is so I can put the Desire rom on the device. I really enjoy the HTC Sense and android. The stock android on the Nexus One is fantastic I agree just IMO missing the Sense UI.

New to the site, and would like to thank evetyone who has made a post/thread, and to everyone who has positve and relevant posts in the coments. I have been reading this site since i learned about it. I have made it thru all the forums and have realized alot of this lingo is over my head. Im wanting to give my phone some upgrades to personalize it better for me. I am looking for someones help to root,clock,and undervolt my phone. Until I leearn what is actually what I am afraid of doing these things on my own, but have noticed significant lag, and issues in my phone that canot be fiked without doing these things and more. Soory for the long post but anybody that can help me please contact me via message or email.

dont have knowledge/confidence/guts to root or install custom roms.
Well if you look at the development forum theres a post that explains all this in a high detail rooting the g2 is not very hard its actually one of the simplest phones i've rooted usually its alot harder like the g1, mytouch 3g, vibrant, and etc those are hard to root but this is simple but always theres a risk of a brick and you do void your warranty so check out the first page on the development forum and you might get a better indepth idea..

Lag? Good thing you're new to Android...you haven't seen lag till you tried the G1.
Like the above post, rooting now is much easier than before. I've rooted my G1 and a friends G1. The G2 was simple compared to those. Plus now you can also get full S-Off with 'gfree'. That will also get you sim-unlock.
But most of all - if you don't get someone to do it for you - read, read and then re-read! It won't take long, but still, don't be rushed. Double check what you enter before you hit enter.
And yes, it is worth it!

Gfree is basically the new visionary except it not only perm roots your phone, but it also unlocks it. You have both radio s off and label s off.

I have many android phone from g1 to nexus one to my new g2. What you need to do is google xda developers. That forum will have all the info and tutorials you need. Including youtube vids. The truth is if you screw up your phone return to the carrier saying you don't know what's wrong with it. They will pretty much replace it.

Im not going to rush this cuz that would be one expensive as paperweight siting around. Im not sure if its because of the lingo or me not "breaking/rooting" anything b4 but if someone can actually show me, i am open to bringing a case of beer or money. Please contact me for discussion. Just really dont wanna damage this phone. It cold be like a mini Android course.

gfree isn't the new Visionary. Visionary is for rooting your phone, and an alternative to that is called rage.
What gfree does is a combination of radio S-OFF (proper, full security off), SuperCID (lets you flash any other carrier's ROM) and also SIM unlock.
So to fully unlock your phone, you want to root it (with Visionary or rage) and then use gfree as well. Though of course you don't *have* to do either of those, for instance you could just root it if that's all you wanted.
I have had the vibrant for a couple of months now, and I must say I am very dissapointed.
I had the chance to try my friends' evo and another friends mytouch 4g and I must say these phones are about 10 times better rhan the vibrant...
No lag, gps works amazingly fast and accurate 9.8 ft accurancy indoors on the evo with 8 sats locked. These phones just work right out of the box. The vibrant is a hyped up phone with very little usability because most times I need something really quick the phone decides to crawl and doesn't respond. Build quality is also better on the mentioned phones. Even my other friends htc aria performs faster and better in every aspect and that on 2.1...
Hopefully someone will solve these issues at some point cause it seems to me it is all software related cause on the spec sheet the vibrant looks to be a great device but in real life it is just a lot of frustration...
This is definitely my last Samsung phone and as soon as I get my hands on a used mytouch 4g I will gladly get rid of the vibrant.

I felt like venting because using this phone is frustrating. I posted in the general section so if that was wrong let the mods take care of it but don't act like an idiot.
My vibrant is rooted and on official ka6. Rooting has nothing to do with the performance of the device.
Besides a phone should work the right way out of the box without any modification. If you say you are happy then good for you, but you might want to try using other phones and you will clearly see the difference...

I have MANY phones. Rooting doesnt help the performance... but apps that need root access do. And yes, voodoo (converting the file system to EXT 4) WILL fix your complaint.
Hazzard99 thank you for the reply. You are absolutely right and that is why I said it must all be software related since the hardware seems like it is supposed to beat pretty much any device out there.
I am fine with rooting and I did it, I just do not feel comfortable to flash any custom firmware yet...
I am more frustrated with samsung than anything else. I think android is the future definitely and it is growing daily... but Samsung lost me as a customer, that is for sure.

I'm sorry, aren't a ton of the threads in this forum dedicated to people's complaints with sammy/tmo/vibrant? Not a whole lot of us are satisfied with the Vibrant stock. Maybe we can educate him just how simple it is to root this device and put it's fantastic hardware to use.
Can you imagine what we'd miss out on if Sombionix or Eugene were basically told to piss off when they first picked up an Android phone and wanted it to do more?

I grasp the basics but I still require a bit more education before I proceed and this forum has plenty of step by step guides on how to do it, I just felt the need to bash Samsung. I wish I could do more so that Samsung actually hears my and many other peoples complaints.

I understand that the stock version of the phone is truly laggy, and the gps is not that great. But they are many roms or "custom firmwares" that u can flash. They will make ur phone nearly 100x better. Flashing is defnitely worth it. If ur brave enough, you can even add on the ffc.
Dont be scared you dont have to do much but flash the rom of your choice and read up on it a bit.
One of the little pleasures of life Is taking pride in the things that we do for ourselves. I am very grateful for the community everytime I meet someone who has a certain phone and hates it. I let them know that the phone isnt that bad.
Oh and btw I run bionix v and I can underclock to 800mhz and be happy as a pig in poop.
And also we let samsung have it. they got railed via facebook and twitter about how unhappy people were. Tust me they know!!!

I recommend both guides in my signature if you have not already. And yeah, we railed samsung pretty hard... got some articles written and voi'la they released froyo (half-assed though)

Not cause its bad or anything.. but it could possibly erase your sd card and mess with your internal memory if you dont watch out

I'm the proud owner of a rooted Droid running UD7, and have rooted friends' Droids, too. But STILL, I read the instruction in the root Xoom "how-to" in the dev forum, and I can't for the life of me figure it out enough to have any confidence what so ever while trying it!
-It's the same thing as when root came out for the Droid; there's the "know wtf it all means" crowd getting pelted with redundant Qs from us "can't figure it out" guys!
-So what's the usual donation for this?
I'd probably use one instead of ADB.

I would assume this is for Xoom 3G and not Wifi only?
Someone point me towards a good backup program for unrooted Xooms so I can backup all my apps and configs and I'll go first
keep in mind that the wifi and 3g xooms appear to be different when it comes to rooting...
I hope you can get this to work for the Wifi version. I never learned to use SDK and adb commands. Used Unrevoked for my Dinc.

Its not a bad thing to learn ;-) and its really not that difficult to use adb.. people are just so damn lazy in this day and age.. its like "what I have to type something?!?! I can't just click something?" Lol god you younger people would have flipped if all you had was dos when you were a kid like me. Hell back then everything was on 5 1/4 floppy disks Lol

I also remember having to sell my prized posession, a beautiful Fender bass, to pay my rent because my landscaping job wasn't paying me well enough. Thank God I found the part time job shoveling **** at that horse farm. It wasn't so bad because it's cool at night.

What I DON'T seem to remember are any times when I had a spare thousand bucks to set fire to.
Now from all that you might gather that I'm just some dumb ass laborer with no need to even HAVE a Xoom, let alone root the thing, but I'm not. I've hacked my Canon cameras, my K1m, my Droid, and now I want to take my Xoom to its limits.
What I DON'T wanna do is turn it into a friggin paperwieght for my desk (...yes, years later I now work at a desk).
I agree with you that there are a lot of lazy folks these days, and being 8 years your senior, I've witnessed this regression more so than yourself. However, I don't think "lazy" is nearly as accurate as "fearful" is for the true description of folks here looking for a sure-fire way to root with the least amount of possibility of catastophic failure.
Sorry for the rant, but this has always been an issue for me from guys that share your perspective on this.
Alright guys for over a year now I have been trying to decide if I should root. I have seen some positives about rooting but not a good enough breakdown to want to jump on board. Now that the new update is rolling out, I'm again at this crossroad. So I ask, what advantages are there to rooting? What do I gain over sticking to stock? Overall, just convince me why I should root and go to cyanogen...thanks in advance

3) Notification power widgets (many ROMs have them now)
4) AdFree to block ads!
5) Faster / Better battery life (overclock/underlock/undervolt/etc.)
6) Nandroid Backups
7) No bloatware
8) Screenshots (minor, but some like it)
9) Blazing fast updates (CM7 been up with 2.3 since January)
These are basic for all custom ROMs, but there is just the utter speed and smoothness to CM7 especially, and has tons of great features over stock baked right into the ROM.
If you root, you don't have to go to CyanogenMod. Tons of people do because it really is an awesome AOSP ROM, but there are other choices too. Rooting gives you that choice. I personally just run CM7 because its so great, I have flashed a lot of ROMs and not found anything better.
I just use the stock GB rom with the Virtuous V4 kernel so I can OC. Does everything I need. Use Titanium to freeze a few things and its very fast.
If rooting and s-offing the phone was not a 5 min process I would say ya you need a big ass breakdown. Dude its so simple. Just do it. And even if you don't like it go back to stock. Just try it!

5 minute job? I had a (half arsed) crack once... Installing the developer tools, downgrading, risking f%@#ing up and temporarily bricking your phone. Good few hours work at best by the time you include the pages of reading you need to do.
I'd love to root, but until there is a 5 minute solution it just doesn't seem worth it...

If he's on a G2 and on 2.2 the root really does only take about 15min start to finish. If he's on a DZ and has to downgrade etc. it can take much longer of course. On top of that, even if it takes an hour to do, its definitely worth everything it gets you.

Took a while to get root only because I have a crap sd card but it was definitely worth it!
Don't bother with the guides in the dev section, follow the wiki guide and it will be easy.
Basically its:
- Get MiniADB which it much easier to work with
- Follow wiki guide.
Done.
If you wait for a 1 click solution you learn nothing. At least you learn how to use ADB and the basic commands because you will need them when you change roms/kernels/radios.

The choice to root is yours and yours alone. I will say this, after having a rooted phone, I could never go back to a stock phone.

See this is one of the things that's get me nervous about rooting. I have heard its such a high risk. I know I'm probably technical enough to do it but do the rewards really out way the risks.

Couple of questions, what are Nandroid backups? Titanium...? Lol I have no idea what these things are, but I'm always looking for a ways to better my g2. Sorry my ignorance. You can keep it brief I just want a general overview.

Lol first of all you responded by asking why I would ask this question on xda ( refer back to YOUR original post) which in my mind is condescending and rude. If he's on a G2 and on 2.2 the root really does only take about 15min start to finish. If he's on a DZ and has to downgrade etc. it can take much longer of course. On top of that, even if it takes an hour to do, its definitely worth everything it gets you.

Why is it easier to do it on the g2 vs. Dz? Also some people say it takes long to achieve root, does it really only take 15 minutes?

I did my dz in 15 mins, but I have done it 3 times. So I all ready have all the files downloaded. If you are doing it using adb depending on your internet connection downloading the android sdk can take a very long time. There is a way to do it with out adb (check the dev section) which should take about 1 hour including the time it takes to read the guide a few times and make sure everyting you need is set up correctly.
