ext fomatted sd space in liberated Aria (eclair) doesn't show up in cyanogen 6.1.1 - HTC Aria General

Hello everyone,
I recently got an HTC aria from AT&T.
After a few days I went ahead and rooted the phone.
At first I decided to try the liberated Aria (éclair) rom. It was a good experience. But just last night I decided to try another rom, so I went with Cyanogenmod 6.1.1.
While I was using liberated aria, I used rom manager to partition my sd card with the ext filesystem, so I could move some apps to it and open up some space from my phone's internal storage.
This space, while I never figured out how to move the apps, always showed in titanium backup.
With the move to Cyanogenmod 6.1.1, this partition doesn't show at all!, in fact my sd card is at 1.7 Gb!, it's like I lost an extra 0.25 Gb (which is the partition size I chose in rom manager before)... I tried partitioning in cyanogenmod with rom manager again, but then my sd card took another 0.25 Gb hit and went to 1.5 Gb!...
How do I get back to my 2Gb sdcard space? furthermore how I do partition the card such that I can extend my internal storage for apps?
Thanks
Andres

I use gparted on linux to do that. I'm not sure what OS you use, but there are live cds you could use.
But on gparted, you should be able to see all the partitions on the card and manage them as necessary.
In order to use the ext partition, you should darktremor's app2sd. Ext3 is the filesystem you should use, but ext2 works as well I believe.

thanks, I use Debian Squeeze on desktop and testing on laptop.
I just got gparted, but it says my external storage is only 1.7 Gb!
Like I said...the extra 0.25 Gb is no longer being mounted with the sdcard and it somewhere lost in the filesystem and/or apportioned to some obscure directory...

Hmmm... that is quite odd. I know some sd cards aren't actually what they state. My 8GB card only shows as 7.8GB for example.
Try formatting the whole card (Back up first!!) And see if it comes back somehow. I am not a sd card expert.

thats what i'd recommend.
when you installed cm6, did you do a wipe data? did you notice if it said it was wiping the ext partition? i'd guess cm6 isn't noticing the space because it was partitioned separately from the rom install.
backup your important data, format the card, and try repartitioning it again now that you've got cm6 installed.

well I'm not entirely sure why it worked this time, but I was able to fully format the card. Now I'm back to 2Gb (well, really 1.84 Gb, but that's right)
The problem I think was that I was formatting with Rom manager, and it was ignoring the extra unrecognized space. What I did different this time, is that I went into settings > sd card & storage > unmount sd card > format sd card > mount sd card > sucess!
So this successfully formatted the whole card.
Thanks for your pointers

Unfortunately trying to partition it again failed.
I tried gparted and it successfully formatted a part of the card with the ext3 filesystem (while leaving the rest as unallocated -- at least this is what gparted said). Unfortunately when mounting the sd card on my phone it complained that the card had been damaged. So I had to reformat it, undoing the previous partitioning.
Then I tried rom manager again, but the way it works is by going into recovery and partitioning the card there. Unfortunately, clockworkmod recovery showed a warning sign ( triangle with an exclamation mark in it) above an android and froze there...I had to pull the battery out to reboot my phone.
I guess my oldish version of gparted (0.7.0) doesn't like the YAF filesystem (YAFFS). So perhaps when it partitions the card, it screws up the existing YAFFS partition. I'll try to use gparted again to partition the card fully, 256 Mb ext3 as extra app storage and the rest, I guess ext3 as well.
Andres

I finally did get it to work on both R012 and FR008 (as well as CM6.1.1 and CM7)
I formatted the sdcard with gparted (chose a 512 Mb ext3 partition with 32 Mb Swap). Then from android's terminal emulator (as root) I typed
Code:
a2sd check
and it enabled apps2sd using darktremor just fine. It became aware of my ext3 partition.

Transfering ext3 + apps to new SD card

Quick question, I have an 2GB (Non-class 6 SD card) and it was working okay with my G1 phone. I partitioned it with no problem, have apps, themes, roms, basically the whole nine yards on it. I recently just purchased a new 8 gb 6 class SD card and was wondering if Paragon Manager or any other program can transfer the data over flawlessly? I know I have to create a new ext3 part (probably using paragon manager) and then transfer all the data over...but was wondering if anybody else did this before without running into any issues and what was the overall process you took? I appreciate any help. Thank you.
no issues here, done it a couple times. didnt use paragon though. used ext support on my mac to copy all files from both partitions, then format the card using GParted on my Slax USB. then put my files back, inserted into g1 and booted the phone. cyanogens MOD works great with it.

Quick question for you, did your apps still show as installed in the market when you swapped cards? I have been meaning to get my 8GB cards (I have a few with tv episodes on them) set up so I can swap between them and my 16GB at any time, but this question is one that is keeping me from trying yet (that and a lack of time).
Thanks.
insert original card and do not mount it (or unmount it if auto),
dd if=/dev/sdcardfile of=/home/yourusername/tmpsdbackup
swap cards and do not mount it (or unmount it if automatic),
dd if=/home/yourusername/tmpsdbackup of=/dev/sdcardfile
Then run gparted, move your ext partition to the end of the disk and expand your crap32 partition to max.
wait so do i just partion my 8 gig c6 and than copy all files off my other sd card and i should be able to boot up, of course redownload everything or should i not try that
and when i say copy my files ove3r just the ones on my sdcard not all my apps

I used Partition Manager to partition my 8g Sd card into a Ext3 partition. What I did was just wipe, reflash my ROM (Cyanogen's 3.4) and reinstalled all the apps from the Market. It seems like it would take forever, but it really didn't.
The reason why I reflashed was because when I changed SD cards originally, it stopped reading all the original files from the original SD. All-in-all, it was very easy to just: Wipe, Reflash the ROM, then reinstall apps from Market, which should still be listed under Downloads.
how do you format an ext3 partion

accessing ext partition within phone

Phone: mytouch 3g 1.2 rooted
OS: ginger yoshi 1 RC7
SD card partitioned using recovery menu.
Ok, I have a rather large sd card and my computers are all linux. So naturally i wanted a very large ext partition on my sd card and a small fat partition for compatibility when i'm on someone else's computer.
The problem i have is is that within the phone, nothing can see the contents of the ext partition, despite app2sd apparently working (using ginger yoshi rc7).
I would really rather store things like mp3s and such in ext format but the card only seems to want to expose the fat partition to any apps.
Does anyone know what i can do to fix this ?
also, ginger yoshi says it supports ext4 but it's mounting my ext4 upgraded partition (all done in recovery) as ext2. suggestions?

Clockwork Recovery screwed my microSD

I installed the latest SwiftDroid v2.0 RC4.
Before it I wiped everything.
After flashing I entered into Clockwork Recovery. I wiped data again (I had problem with repartitioning so I did it again), and then s*it happened.
I didn't know it will wipe out SD card ! I backuped it, and it wouldn't be problem if it wiped it.
The problem is, it erased ext2 partition, swap partition, and heavily crippled main FAT32 partition. Now my microSD card has only 1,86 GB, and it has 4 GB capacity! The half capacity is gone ! I checked in MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition, and couldn't beleive. OK, maybe MiniTool is wrong. I booted Parted Magic, and the same s*it !
Is there any way o claim back lost 2 GB of space, or should I go and buy new microSD?

In MiniTool or parted magic, delete all of the partitions on your SDCard. Then create a fat32 partition from the unallocated space. Note: You WILL lose all data from the SDCard when doing this. Then try re-partitioning using clockwork. Also, you don't need the ext2 partition if you are planning to use apps2sd in swiftdroid, as you can use Android's built in one that doesn't require a seperate SDCard partition.

I forgot to type I did it.
I deleted partition (it wasn't FAT32, it was FAT16 after CR messed up!), and microSD has only 1,86 GB.
Entered in Clockwork Recovery, and it can't mount microSD card.
Frustrating.

You can try something but it requires Ubuntu installed or livecd (Not sure if other distros have the same utility)
Put your SDCard into a card reader (or you can try and mount it using USB) and then search Disk Utility from the Unity menu and open it (or in the standard user interface go to System>Administration>Disk Utility)
Click on your SDCard in the sidebar, and then Choose 'Format Drive' (at the top) Choose Master Boot Record and then click ok. Then format the SDCard as FAT32.

[Q] SD card

Hi guys, so I backed up my sd card and went on a little quest. Never knew what this did so tried it out, went onto clockwork and did an sd partition of 1024mb. Turned phone on sd card worked fine, tried installing a big game but still it said not enough space when there is 2.5gb empty on sd card. So that failed I went onto MAGLDR and onto services and cleared sd partition. Now I turn phone on and it says no sd card and prompts me to format it on status bar, but then it still doesn't work. Tried mounting it via usb but still the sd card is not showing up. Has my sd card corrupted? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also some instructions on how to properly install apps 2 sd, as just moving to the sd card on settings doesn't fully move the app, some of it still remains in the internal and after installing 50+ apps it comes down to 20mb internal memory and says I have no more internal space.
Regards

if a rom supports a2sd (typhoon, for example,) you do not have to do anything, it will automatically use an ext partition if it finds one.
If you choose 'move to sd card' for an app, it will be REMOVED from the ext partition, and placed on the fat32 partition (where it may not work), so DO NOT choose 'move to sd', all your apps should be set to internal, and the rom will put them in the ext partition.

Well, i would start with HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool to format the sd card back to original. Then start from there.

And @samsamuel wouldnt he benefit more from data2ext? From my experiences, that puts EVERYTHING on the ext partition. just puting my two cents in, (its about all i got xP )

Depends on what your needs are, .,,, running everything from the SD means much of the nand is unused, what's the point of that? Typhoon for instance,, 150mb system, say 20mb for cwm and boot, that's (round up) 200mb used out of 512,, nothing is gonna use the other 300mb, so might as well let the data use it.
Right I'm running this ice ROM off the nand: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1441462
[22-04-12][ROM] Unofficial AOKP for HD2 [Build 33][4.0.4][tytung_ics_r1]
It does say apps2sd is possible on thread op, so would I just partition my SD card on clockwork to 1024mb then just install apps without moving them to SD manually? Is that really it?

True, thats why i dont use either, i have the Tmous version so i ihave about 760 mb of unused nand. Only way id prolly use a partition is if i got a lot of bad blocks, but i only have about 5 bad blocks right now in just my data partition.

Yes, yes it is just partition sd card using minitool partition or disk utility(linux) and you should be good, i dont believe you have to reinstall the ROM either because apps2sd is an init.d script which gets ran upon boot.

[Q] Running CM7 off NAND - anything to consider changing SD Card?

Hi all.
I was given an HD2 running CM7 off NAND. It has a 2gb SD card in there, with around 400mb as ext3/ext4 partition.
I want to swap the 2gb for an 8gb card. Having not installed the ROM myself (and am not too familar with the process on the HD2), I'm unsure how to proceed.
Are there any files on the SD card that are likely to be needed for booting?
Can I just stick the new card in, use recovery to partition it and then remove the card - copy the old ext3/ext4 partition data over and it'll be happy?
Do I need to use recovery, can I just a Linux box to do that instead?

assuming you don't have a linux pc that can read ext partitions, id do it this way..
into cwm - full backup.
2gb card into card reader (or mount usb storage in android - or 'mounts and storage - mount sd card' in cwm) - copy off your whole fat32 partition - make sure you have hidden files set to show in windows explorer.
8gb card into phone, back into cwm, create the new ext partition.
8gb card back into card reader (or mounts and storage - mount sd card in cwm) and copy the fat 32 stuff back to the card.
into cwm - restore - advanced restore - restore the sd-ext partition only.
Thanks for the reply.
I do have a Linux PC to hand, and the HD2 doesn't have CWM on it.
So in the end, I used GParted to create a partition table that looked like the existing card and then copied the contents of the old card over. Phone booted up fine
