I must have done something wrong... - Vibrant General

On stock 2.1 from a brand new phone. Wanting to get a Bionix-V 1.2 rom installed to start with. (unless someone points out a more popular/stable/better rom to start with)
So I thought I was following the guide right but I cant figure out what.
NOOB GUIDE is what I was following. Here is where I think i messed up or got lost.
3 – Rom Manager / Clockwork Recovery
Now that you have your apps, system data & home settings saved, go to the Market to download Rom Manager (there is a paid and a free version, either will work, but I always suggest supporting developers if you can). We are going to use Rom Manager to install an alternate recovery, called Clockwork Recovery. This is what allows you to make a backup of your entire system (called a nandroid backup).
Once you download and install Rom Manager, open it, give it Root Access (Check to always remember if it's not already selected). At the top, click "Flash Clockwork Recovery" and after it has finished click to Reboot Into Recovery.
If this is your first time, you are very likely at the stock vibrant recovery (purple text)... click on Re-install packages. Your phone will reboot and should come back to the Clockwork Recovery (green text).
If at stock, click reinstall packages again (likely worked the first time).
Great, now you have a custom recovery. Scroll down (by using the volume buttons) and select (by using the power button) to backup your system. This will take about 5 minutes to complete. Once done, you have a complete snapshot of your phone that you should always be able to come back to.
I strongly encourage reading Koush's thread, you can find it here.
His installation instructions have more detail:
Installation instructions:
1.Download ROM Manager from the Market.
2.Flash Recovery.
3.Choose Vibrant as your phone.
4.Accept the Superuser prompt.
5.On the very FIRST boot of Clockwork, you may need to manually select "reinstall packages" if Clockwork does not start. You should only ever have to do this once. It will be automatic from then on.
6.Watch the backup go!
Click to collapse
The thing is when I try to reboot into Clockwork it still looks the same, nothing happens when i tell Rom Manager to backup, it just restarts to what looks like the original recovery screen. It looks something like this..
Android system recovery <2e>
Samsung Recovery Utils
- for BML -
Vol Up - up
Vol Down - down
Power - Selec item
Reboot system now
reinstall packages
delete all user data
delete cache data
Click to collapse
Since this is my first flash I might just be overly paranoid but if this is not right I dont want to mess up my brand new phone by just plowing ahead without being sure.
Thanks for any help... yet again.

Try selecting reinstall packages. And then again a second time.
Tap volume down then push lock/power to select.

Try reinstalling packages.

TY, guess I must not have told it to reinstall enough times.

Took me 3x reinstall packages before I actually got into cwm. You will know when you get tehre.

Caliga if you need more help or have questions send me an email I'm PMing u my email address.

OK, so something has gone wrong. At first I thought it was all ok but now the more apps i try to open the more nothing seems to work. Going to try to go back to stock and see if i can start over but I cant seem to get this phone to go to the clockwork recovery menu. Every time i restart the phone and hold the keys it still boots like normal. guess its time for more research.

Had the same issue with my new Vibrant. Look for the 3e recovery fix listed in here. Solved my issues.

^ he was on eclair (2e), the 3e recovery is not an issue here.

Apps don't work probably because you did not do a correct wipe when you flashed. Try: Wipe Data/Factory Reset - then Flash the ROM - then Wipe cache - then go to advanced and wipe Devil Cache - then Fix permissions from the same menu, go back and reboot.

Were you able to flash bionix? From CWM You just select install zip from sd, and select your file.

Sorry for delayed response. Towns wifi went down last night and someone just now got around to resetting it.
@ferhanmm: I did get bionix on but it was acting very flaky, system ended up getting stuck in what i thought was a brick but someone in my other thread helped me get it working again and now i have a fully working trigger rom.
Everything is up and going again now I would like to get a theme for it, but really the only thing i dont like is all the green icons. About to do some research and see if I can just replace icons somehow.

[Q] Reboot Button problem

OK, I'd appreciate some help here. I Just downloaded Zenmaster's Reboot button app. I probably made a mistake by going to ROM manager and its install from SD card option.
The install started out fine, but just stalled at installing update. Left it there for 30 minutes.
I did a battery pull and the phone went into recovery except it says at the bottom of the screen:
E: Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk01p1
(Invalid Arguement)
#MANUAL MODE#
The upper screen has the typical
reboot system now
Apply sdcard...
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
Nothing happens with either reboot system now or apply from sdcard
So I really would appreciate...what now.
Are you rooted? Do you have Clockwork Recovery installed?
Are you hitting the "Home" soft button key on the Reboot option? That's the "Enter" key for the stock recovery screen, not the Power button like it is for Clockwork.

Yes I'm rooted and yes I have CWM.
This is embarrassing now, because I WAS NOT hitting the home button, which I should have known to do, but obviously forgot. Did that and I'm back up. Old Droid habits die hard I guess.
My apologies for using up bandwidth and thank you again.

Yeah, that's not gonna work. The app is a .apk file, which gets installed via adb or Root Manager/Astro. It's not a flashable zip.
It's also now available on the market .

Bonus. That is fantastic news.
Well naming the .zip to .apk worked and Reboot Button worked. Sort of. I think what happened here was no fault of the app, but something related to the relationship between my phone and voodoo. I had never seen any particular problem on my phone, but I just wanted a way to disable the thing as I was contemplating flashing jt's ROM.
Well the disabling of voodo lost root on my phone. I use Launcher Pro and that was gone too. So I tried reinstalling that and entered a force close loop from hell. After installing the LP, the phone regressed to the same opening screen it had when out of the box, different from the static wallpaper I had.
There is a thread on this here:
http://forum.androidcentral.com/fascinate-roms-hacks/38029-how-escape-force-close-loop-hell.html
I followed that and got back to the out of the box Fascinate state. Only part of my apps, and not all of the paid ones showed up in Market, even after an overnight wait. The significant missing one is Documents to Go.
There was 0.00 space left on internal memory, so I did a factory reset.
This would not be a big deal, BUT the phone will not root, so I can't use Titanium Backup to restore stuff. The Samsung Drivers are installed, the USB cable is the one that came with the phone, and the computer recognizes the device. However, Odin seems to think the device is not connected.
So, I'm not sure what is going on with this phone of mine. Again, I don't think it is the app.
Edit; All is back to normal

Stock to Nero v3.... Simplified! UPDATED: 1/9/2011

For all those saying that my instructions are redundant.
Please follow all instructions!
I understand that Nero v3 wipes your data and caches for you, but there has been many cases where it has not done that, and users have really messed up their phones. Please take the extra 30 seconds and wipe it manually to be safe.
As far as the Voodoo step. I undertand that when deleting the "disable-voodoo" file, that it will automatically enable Voodoo for you on the next reboot. However, there are also cases where this didn't happen. Please check to ensure.
My instructions may seem redundant to users who have done this a lot.....but this isn't for those users. Please follow the steps exactly to help avoid ANY problems, don't just assume everything works automatically like it's supposed to. Might as well take the extra 2 minutes to do all of my steps, then 2 hours arguing with T-Mobile as to why they won't exchange your bricked/modded phone.
STOCK 2.1 to NERO V3....SIMPLE AND SAFE!
First of all, thank you Team Whiskey for Nero v3. To everyone wanting Nero v3, but are tired of seeing all the confusing and long tutorials:
1. Ensure your phone is rooted (Google z4root if your not).
2. Download ROM Manager
3. Flash the 2.5.1.2 ClockworkMod Recovery
4. Download Nero v3 from a computer, and Drag-n-Drop the .zip file onto your Vibrant SD card.
5. Restart your phone in CWM Recovery via ROM Manager
6. Click "clear cache", and "wipe data", click Advanced, click "clear Davlik cache", click "install from SD", click "install a .zip from SD", then install the Nero v3 .zip
7. Reboot, WAIT 15 MINUTES WITHOUT TOUCHING YOUR PHONE...REBOOT AGAIN... and you should be good.
8. To enable voodoo, open SD card from phone, delete "disable_voodoo" under the voodoo folder, reboot to recovery (NOT FROM ROM MANAGER, BUT FROM THE HOME SCREEN USING THE POWER BUTTON, THEN SELECTING RECOVERY) (SHOULD BE A RED RECOVERY), goto voodoo lagfix, press enable, then reboot....REBOOT WILL TAKE AROUND 10 MINUTES, DO NOT TOUCH YOUR PHONE!
FOLLOW STEPS CLOSELY
P.S. Don't Forget the THANKS button.
Looks nice, concise, & noob friendly (I should know).
Kudos.

So glad this thread was made. Its retard easy to flash this rom and get voodoo to work (it was my first and I have this opinion, which should speak volumes), I really can't believe the amount of people in the thread that just couldnt figure it out.
What do you recommend for backup/restore of apps and data? Will EVERYTHING get restored? I spent a lot of time configuring my home screen with folders and apps. Can that be restored?
Lastly, if I decide to go back to stock JI6 and my original setup, is there a relatively easy way to do that?
Thanks.
Titanium backup will backup all your apps and such, but to get your home screen back I'm pretty sure you just have to do it manually. I know that sgs tools lets you backup your home screens but I'm not sure if it will work across roms or not, you could try it, at worse it will give you an error message and just make your home screens all blank (well really at worse you have to reflash).
Titanium managed to back up my homescreen settings, both for TouchWiz and for Launcher Pro.
EVERYTHING (all my text messages, internet history, bookmarks, etc.) was exactly like before, but in Nero instead of stock.

That's really all "enable Voodoo" in green CWM recovery does. The step is redundant as well.
The fastest way is after you flash the Nero V3.zip and reboot, hold down the volume and power buttons to go back into the recovery menu before anything even loads. Enable voodoo here, as theres little data it will need to convert to voodoo. Then once you boot into android, everything it writes from here on out will be ext4. If you load up android first, it'll have to go back and rewrite all the data you just created to the new file system, taking longer.
For all those saying that my instructions are redundant.

If you have a lot of stuff in the root then you'll need to scroll pasted the bottom. Like just keep scrolling down and once you see the ++go back++ then you're at the bottom. I just had this issue flashing nero v4.1.

How i got nova full edition to work on my rooted htc evo... Must be rooted.

Ths is how I got NOVA FULL EDITION TO WORK... no more force closes.... READ ALL!!!!
1. must be rooted!!!
2. install Amon RA Recovery for EVO
3. Re-format your transflash card or delete everything... including the gameloft folders.
4. download your the rom that you are using to your transflash. i save it under the ROMS directory on the transflash...
5. boot into Amon RA Recovery. either by holding down power button and reboot then select recovery or turn off phone and use power button and volume down and select recovery....
6. once into Amon RA Recovery then select wipe option. Then select wipe all factory reset. Then go down and select all the other options for cache (must do them all...) We are basically clearing all the dalvik caches.
7. now do to the main directory on Amon RA Recovery. select install from zip option. Now install your custom rom. I am using OMJ rom ppcgeeks. I have also used roms from here such as well and it worked also...
8. once you get to your main screen re-download the nova full edition from gameloft. 1-800-910-3186 once you call them they will send you a text message to download the nova full edition. If you do not call them and you simply copy the file back over to your transflash you will get an error that says invalid copy.... then you would need to restart the process from step 1.
9 install the game
10 run the game
11 download the 80mb additional download...
12 enjoy the game!
You could have saved yourself a lot of effort by simply typing "You need to re-download it from Gameloft".

[Q] Is there any way to remove MIUI from my phone?

Wipe and flash a new ROM. If you need to ask how, don't. It sounds like you need to do some serious reading first.
If you've managed to root, wipe, and flash MIUI, you should be capable for re-wiping and flashing something else.

Maybe he/she bought the phone with it that way. In which case, do nothing until you read read read.
They are right. You need to read for your own good.
That said, do you have a custom recovery? I would assume so. Before you do anything, make a backup in recovery.
Next, go to the development section for this device and find a ROM you really like. Learn about the differences between AOSP, Sense, and MIUI ROMs.
When you have chosen and downloaded a ROM, reboot into recovery again. Wipe cache, system, boot, and data partitions. Finally do a wipe data/factory reset. At this point all you have on your device are the bootloader and recovery.
Go to install zip from SD card and search for the ROM you downloaded. Install it. Reboot and wait. First boot always takes longer.
If boot is unsuccessful, boot back into recovery, wipe, and flash the backup you made.
Understand that I am merely trying to be helpful. I make no guarantees, but wrote these instructions to be nice. If your phone bricks, bursts into flames or implodes and creates a singularity that engulfs the planet, I am in no way responsible.
Got it?

Yes. I just went from MIUI to Febs ICS beta 5.0.
I downloaded the ICS beta (you can pick whatever ROM you want from the Android mytouch dev section). Mounted my phone for USB storage, transferred the ICS Beta.zip to the phone then unmounted it.
Then in MIUI when you hold the power button down, it should give you the option to reboot into recovery or you can use ClockworkMod to do it.
I did option A) rebooted into recovery through power off feature in the MIUI. Then you go down to backup, make a backup. Then you wipe cache and wipe data. Go to advanced and I believe you can wipe dalvik(sp?) cache under the advanced setting.
Then you go to install from sdcard and then scroll down to your zip.file.
Then boom let it install. then when it says install complete you press the back button, click reboot and BAM you will be off MIUI and on whatever ROM you chose.
I would take everyone's advice on here to go read everything you can. I made this post hoping you have some knowledge of flashing and all that jazz. Let me know if you need any help.

Wildfire stuck on bootloop

Hi all
I have a Wildfire that had Cm7, was rooted and s-offed. As Im selling the phone i thought it would be a good idea if I reset to factory, ready to be sold. However it has now given me a problem.
I reset to factory by clearing the storage on the hboot screen, and now when i turn on the phone it stays on the boot animation. I can get top the hboot menu, but im now stuck.
Any ideas?
Cheers

Are the steps the same as a normal install?
Yes.

and now teh screen hasnt moved for about 10 minutes, its on the screen where there is a top hat and yellow arrow...........
help.....
press the power button again then use the trackball. to select everything in cwm.
Also I'm not 100% as I've never cleared storage from hboot but doesn't that wipe your SD card?
if so you may have wiped some files needed by the phone so you may need to reinstall Cm7 or whichever rom, not just factory reset.

pretty sure you need gapps for setup to work
Recommended Solution (by me):
(suppose u want "clear setup" of CM7 stable)
Prepare your SD
Wipe off everything
Copy setup files
download.cyanogenmod.com/get/stable/gingerbread/update-cm-7.1.0.1-buzz-signed.zip
download.clockworkmod.com/gapps/gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip
downloads.androidsu.com/superuser/Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip
Get out the SIM card
Boot to recovery
Wipe phone storage
In recovery go to mounts and storage
Unmount /cache
Format /cache, /data, /system
Go back, then to the advanced and Reboot Recovery
"Install" OS
Back in recovery go to install zip from sdcard/choose zip from sdcard
First install update-cm-7.1.0.1-buzz-signed.zip
Then gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip
And finally Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip
Go back, and power off
Now u re in state "like from the store", that mean that OS is not really installed, there re just files copied and real installation will run on frist boot
Unfortunately, theres a catch
Theres problem with CM7 installation and it can face the problem with GPS
First boot will pop-up "market like" window with all Google apps, my recommendation is to wait, dont install anyting, dont click on anything, just wait, it will disapear... u can safely install them later from the market..
You don't really need the su.zip, since CM7 comes pre-rooted.

Recommended Solution (by me):
(suppose u want "clear setup" of CM7 stable)
Prepare your SD
Wipe off everything
Copy setup files
download.cyanogenmod.com/get/stable/gingerbread/update-cm-7.1.0.1-buzz-signed.zip
download.clockworkmod.com/gapps/gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip
downloads.androidsu.com/superuser/Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip
Get out the SIM card
Boot to recovery
Wipe phone storage
In recovery go to mounts and storage
Unmount /cache
Format /cache, /data, /system
Go back, then to the advanced and Reboot Recovery
"Install" OS
Back in recovery go to install zip from sdcard/choose zip from sdcard
First install update-cm-7.1.0.1-buzz-signed.zip
Then gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip
And finally Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip

That's a good plan, but with 2 drawbacks ... 1 you don't need to flash su. Might break stuff since cm7 is pre rooted. 2 what if something else went wrong and he hasn't booted the phone to check? Then sells, unaware of it being damaged. Buyer comes back angry, ect ect aside from that good tut

sorry but u re wrong.. it cant break anything.. its just update.. in CM7.1.0.1 is SU 3.0.6 u can safely update it to 3.0.7 (i do it every time like that..)
Edit: sure guys... u dont have to do that... u can do it later from market... u will be prompt to do that... lol ....its defenetly better way install app like that from market rather than from recovery...
(both ways works in this case, anyway my logic says me that is better install crucial apps like that from recovery..)

..thats exactly why i mentioned point 7.
he have to decide what will be his next step..
if he decide to boot and try it out he will have to login to wifi, login to google account (to download Maps or GPS status) etc.. etc.. it will NOT be clear any more..
...it really depends on who is the buyer... does he know him ? can they do that together wiht buyers account, etc..
...because i dont know this dependencies i leave it open.......
