Using Adam as a Retro Gaming Console - Adam General

So as I eagerly await the delivery of my Adam (Ordered on 2/9) I have a long list of ideas for what it can be used for.
The one I am most excited about trying out is its ability to support at least 2 USB Gaming controllers with any or all of the current emulators out there (NESOID, Gensoid, ect...)
By plugging it up via the HDMI port to a TV, there seems like a really good possibility that the Adam can be a portable gaming console for systems like NES, SNES, Sega, and maybe even Playstation 1.
Has anyone experimented with any of this? If all of this works, do you think buying a USB splitter would allow for up to 4 controllers?

Did you get confirmation from tnt? Or did your order status change?

Not yet. Still says Delivery between Feb 25th and March 10th. I don't even know if that means thats when it will be shipped or delivered by.

Possible to use USB game controllers?

Since the Iconia has a functional USB port I'm wondering if it is possible to plug in a USB game controller and use it to play on SNESoid or the like? Anyone want to test this out?

I think at the moment game controllers are not supported by honeycomb but I know when Ice Cream Sandwich comes out, game controllers will be supported from the get go.
You can try to use the Wiimote though and hopefully that will hold you out till October/Whenever it is released by Acer.
I will test later...i did not even come up with this idea.
nice idea btw !!! would be nice if it worked.
3.1 is supposed to add support for a lot of these, right?

You are correct sir
Well basically that means you will be able to connect extra hardware to your Honeycomb device and use it via USB slots. While this wasn't solely geared towards gaming on your Honeycomb device, gaming will see a big benefit from it. Essentially, you'll be able to connect your XBox 360 and other controllers to your device and play your games using it. Great if you don't have or don't want an Xperia Play. -http://tinyurl.com/droidgamer

Yup, I read that 3.1 will add support for 360 wired controllers. Now I just need N64oid to come back on the market, dammit.
3.1 does add support, though each app will need dev updates to support input from the controllers. There are some xooms at bby where I work and I tested it there with an xbox 360 wired controller and n64oid. B-e-a utiful!

Ouya: $99 hackable Android game console

Just spotted this while browsing
http://www.theverge.com/2012/7/2/31...e-android-game-console-designed-by-yves-behar
Yves Behar is in on it, he's the man behind the One Laptop Per Child initiative, which designed innovative, low costing laptops for children around the globe.
devkit shipping with every "console" too
looks promising
Here is the kickstarter project page. No mention of dev kits as it is already based on Android so you just need the SDK, eclipse, etc. They mention it being hackable and easily rooted so I asked about fastboot, NVflash/APX mode, and ADB access. I will post when they answer.
Keep in mind that it should be quite easy to port full AOSP Android to as well as Linux. With a multiboot solution this could be a very interesting device to work with.
Sounds like a pretty awesome console. But will it be able to be found at major retailers?

I am also curious if it will reach the mass market. No doubt that we at XDA will get some development going for it provided it does make it to market. I am interested in the fact that for the price of a Roku you have a device that does far more plus includes a lot of the same features. For gaming I find that at least current mobile games don't entice me the same way as my Wii and Xbox can...

lol
My big question is if the controller connects via bluetooth or a proprietary connection channel. If bluetooth, day one buy for me.
My only concern is if this will still be worth the money when it's released - I think they're aiming for March. By the time we should have a new Tegra platform, and probably a new major Android update
Is it upgradeable like a PC? Is there a modular design?

I put in on the $1337 special. I am not a dev but think this thing will take off.
At this price, it's a total no brainer. You can use it to stream stuff, run emulators, etc.
I got in on the $99 offer.

I wonder if the lack of an optical drive, and no sd card slot, won't restrict the appeal as eight gig can be easily used up. It's the only downside to a nice product.

Very promising project.
It's almost at $2 million in it's first day. WOW. I pledged $99 for one. Looks like fun.
I put in for one as well. A well designed little competitor to the Roku / Apple TV / Nexus Q, with support for custom roms is just what I've been looking for. The fact that it comes with a controller and was designed by Yves Behar is just icing on the cake.

I think this will take off and as here is a quote fro mthe kickstart page "For hackers: root it. Go ahead. Your warranty is safe. Even the hardware is hackable. Want to get inside? You’ll need a standard screwdriver and nothing more. Go to town. We have standard USB ports and Bluetooth, so you’ll even be able to create your own peripherals." So in my mind that means play store added. and with a tegra 3 and 1 gig of memory this will be a sweet addon for any hd tv
Another other nice project by google.

I think you're mistaken about play store as they specify ouya runs their own version of android not just an overlay (they specify games need porting because it is not normal android they will be using) and that they decide what apps can be approved.
For them to have sole access control of available apps suggests no play store functionality, as does the fact they are using their own variation of android and have stated that apps must be selected from the ouya app store.

I know that. Its android 4.0 and they are hacker friendly. It should be easy for the xda community to get stuff like play and such working. Some unity even come pre rooted.
They do say there will be a store and there twitter tells of a sdk too.
Read this "Hackers welcome.

Lost my patience with OUYA finally

Im currently going through one of my tickets still with OUYA about the new console.
Im a little pissed.
My GF bought it for me for xmas when I mentioned interest and I loved it. I was actually a kickstarter donator (only like 20$ but still).
Any way my games were UNPLAYABLE. The lag and issues I had with the controller were just abysmal to the point of near screaming.
I decided to open a ticket with OUYA and that was a PITA. I opened a ticket for a new controller. I got a response and no matter how many times I emailed for an ETA they gave me none. My friend the next state over opens a ticket the next week and gets an ETA a day later. Needless to say I was PISSED. Luckily he gave me permission to use his info as to why he got an ETA so fast and his controller was being shipped and mine was is limbo.
When I finally got mine they had the audacity to tell me I HAD TO PAY to ship the old one back. My buddy basically said screw them and kept his, but to me it was useless and I wanted to stay in good graces for future warranty issues and paid the 6$ cheapest shipping with tracking to get it back to them.
I had to move my console out of my tech area which was a neatly built and shelved doorless closet to my right where my ps3, 360, 2 media PC's and any other equipment I had (all hardwired no wifi) to under my TV on its side in front of me with all my wires now in a tangled mess line of site like it was a ball of string unraveling.
No more than a couple days after I get my controller this version is announced and it would seem the plastic case and enhanced wifi/new firmware is a fix to the horrid controller system they use. I emailed them because technically I was still within my 30 days with target to return the console and had someone mentioned this new version I would have returned it and just got this one.
Right now Im going through it with them again to see if I can exchange this one for the new one and pay the difference but they say I will then have to pay MYSELF AGAIN to mail the old system back to them.
Sorry I had high hopes for this but Ive lost all interest after this.
I feel so bad because now I HAVE to turn this hunk of crap on every few days and goof with it or my GF thinks it was a bad gift. There are really some neat games. I have bought quite a few already and have all the emulators loaded but the controls and lack of REAL MEDIA APPS (netflix, hulu, prime, etc) make this thing not worth the 100$.
U can sideload Netflix it works great with the controller my kids use it everyday...
Sent from my TegraNote-P1640 using XDA Premium HD app
I use mine as a NES,SNES, PSX emulator as well as watching movies using MX Player. I only payed $30 for mine. It works well.
XBMC
Make it your dedicated XBMC box. Thats why I bought mine.
You could have just mentioned the poor controller reception part. You didn't have to complain about the 2 cables coming out of the Ouya and into the TV making your shelf look messy. And they accepted your return, obviously admitting the problem of defect controllers and trying to help.
Some people have DOA and some people don't, it happens to everyone. If you want it to be everything you thought it would then either ship the controller back for a new one, or use something else, almost anything will do (xbox 360 wired, ps3 sixaxis, dualshock, Moga, madcatz) I've tried some of those myself and now consider this my perfect retro gaming device with tight controls, high compatibility, and updated graphics. As for home media either install some of the sideloaded streaming apks like netflix or hulu (there are guides on here) or connect a flashdrive/external to it with your purchased media to watch through vlc, mx player, or xbmc.
There really are a lot of options and this device is made to be tinkered with, it's android for one, the company was promoting developers to hack it, and all software is freeware/trial with sideload options. :good:

Playable On Mojo?

So I was shopping for games this morning and I realized just how far microconsole gaming has to go. Honestly at this point how many games can you play on Shield that you can't already play on your Mojo? I like everyone am holding on to my wallet just biting at the bit to lay down my 199.00 for my new shield console This as I am staring at a Fire Tv, Adt1,Ouya that are not even plugged in I hate to admit it but Ouya is still ahead of the game when it comes to controller based games on Android. Downloading from Google Play is a crap shoot in many cases? They also have the storage issue down pat which many of its newer Android Tv bretherin are yet to accomplish. The stupid part is, When I think about Ouya I get pissed because they just keep doing stupid sh?t:silly: Maybe it's the idea I am in love with?
So how many more boxes will I buy before I get a clue?:cyclops:
I really wonder when the Shield console will release? No pre orders are available yet, and I'm not sure what they are waiting for. The demand must be high or something. I wouldn't buy a fire TV or OUYA because the new shield will destroy those two products combined!

I can bet you that the new shield will not be 100% working.. there'll be issues with AndroidTV, limited onboard storage, etc etc.
The trick is to enjoy what works and work around what doesn't.
It's early days in the 'micro console' days.
I wouldn't be surprised if new TV's come out with AndroidTV pre-installed on cheap dual core SoC's. :good:

Tell you what I refuse to buy another box that is strapped for storage space. I will keep my Mojo and Draco until then. Do you think NVidia would be stupid enough to release the console with a major flaw like that? I know Shield is supposed to be about game streaming but what of Google Play support? I own games on Fire TV, AndroidTV, Ouya I would love to get them all on one box but I know that's never going to happen
Do any of you own and play Ouya Games? I have been trying to decide if spending money on the Ouya platform is a losing battle? They are still adding games all the time many are good ones. They have the partnership with Playcast Media which is awesome by the way. They have the largest library of Controller based Android games that I know of. My opinion is there is a Bigboy other than just the China partners that is keeping them going maybe as a test bed of some kind. How else could they still be here? They already have a tie with NVidia? To me the whole microconsole industry is very interesting to see how this will all play out. What's your guess?

TegraZone have a good controller game library and google play last year introduced the controller friendly icon, so that should be even better.
And now nvidia up'ing it's game.. yeah Ouya was an interesting experiment.. like GameStick

LOL You caught me in the middle of a cluster f**k. I have waited and now I can't make up my mind ? At $300 that's getting awful close to my PS4 so then I start asking myself what the Shield will offer me that my Ps4 can't? I have to wonder at this point if they should not have added the 8gig of ram and made it a true console?
To me if the 16GB version is expandable you are right it would be better to just add a 1TB hard-drive for the extra money ? . So it does have a 2.5 internal HD bay? Then I am curious if a external HD via USB will work ?
Speaking of cluster f**ks , recent reviews of Android TV have not been the greatest . Serious lack of programs and games . The Forge TV looks to be a big disaster , no Netflix or external drive support , controller issues they must have taken a course from the Ouya school of Business ?
I may be waiting awhile with my Mojo and Ouya to see how this pans out.
I think game consoles are old fashioned.... Like wearing a watch.
Yeah android TV will take a lot of time to mature.
Because it has no touch screen ... Lol remember when the mojo came out lol
But it has to done that way..
Eventually it will gain more support and apps.
There's always sideloading
I'd rather android over Sony's or Microsoft's platform.
Same, plan on sticking with mojo at least till the end of the year.
Android M External Storage Can Be 'Adopted' As True Internal Storage Or Accessed Normally With No Additional Apps:

It looks like the Shield 16gb has done everything right (+external storage) based off of the reviews I've seen. At least better than this sh** product called the MOJO. Nvidia has saved Android TV and I hope they are happy because their product rocks!
Who is buying one? Anyone?

Let us know if you find people adding a SATA drive as native storage to shield 16g. :good:
Ok here is what I actually found out. I have been told that you cannot move games to a USB HDD. : ( You are allowed to move games to a SD card up to 128 GB. I also heard you cannot add your own SATA drive to the empty drive bay because there is no SATA port inside of the Shield Android TV. I'm a little disappointing with this news, but I still believe the Shield is a great product.
Android M should fix this problem if the software ever comes to Shield Android TV.

IF ouya would of used a tegra 4 and had 2 gigs of ram, they would have done really really well. It was just to underpowered to impress. I think shield tv is going to own the living room. Mojo could stay around if they update to android tv and drop the price to $99.99

The Madcatz store has the Mojo down to $103.99. I am pretty sure they are phasing out the Mojo as there is no reference at all on there homepage. The sad thing is Mojo at 2years old still outpowers allot of the current boxes. I looked at the benchmarks of Forge Tv, and the Mojo is neck and neck. Madcatz just dropped the ball with software and seems to have lost interest in any further development . With Razer buying out Ouya I am going to keep the Mojo and see how the new boxes come together after the bugs get worked out.
Mojo and shield
Hi all yeah bought my mojo here in UK for £89. Gotta admit the was some problems at first, but eventually have mine running sweet as a nut. Given the fact that android gaming is on the rise surely makes larger companies like nvidia to push this forward. But scince the release of ouya there has always been a common problem, the issus of compatible Google play store, even the powerful nvidia shield has its problems with that. I use my nexus 7 for gaming with my madcatz mojo controller and play store on here is vastly more. Even looking at the new shield TV console which dam looks good, still is going to have the same problem we all get. Looks to me the new shield has focused more on a device to be a PC streamer from there servers. I am for one not entirely comfortable with That. Rather use my Pc.

Game compatibility on Android is often just an arbitrary lock that can by fixed by device spoofing or sideloading apps extracted from other devices (for example your Nexus 7). And if Market Helper fails in some cases or the target device hasn't been rooted I recommend installing Android X86 on a virtual machine where it's irrelevant if you damage that system when editing the build.prop file.
Mojo and shield
Yeah Google play store checks your device then shows compatible apps based on build prop. I've been modding files for long time and certainly when it came to my mojo, the only way for me which worked best was to modify the build prop. Mojo is stock ROM running moddaco mod, which rooted gave me some more access to apps, 2nd by looking at list from nexus 7 still found lack of apps mainly Gameloft. So I decided to edit build prop file, tricky and bricked device few times, but after days of tinkering and going back and forth to get the file abbreviations put correctly. Build prop file is now running as nvidia shield. With some performance tweaks to cut cpu lag out, Market compatibility is now a lot better. Now I did try out the cm12 on the mojo, liked it and although play store did show more high end games mainly some of the regular games did not show as compatible. Ie- dead trigger. Tried the modacco mod. But it didn't like that. Tonight next move I will try would be cm12, root with towelroot, then apply nvidia build prop. See how it goes, but given the fact play store on shield still suffers I might compile the build prop up from the nexus 7 or looking at the jxd line from there gaming tablets. In all like to see company's working on the goal of compiling the code right for the device to be fully compatible based on spec rather than device model and with the right integration of software for full controller support, seems its all left to us to pick up the pieces to get things to work properly. Lol

What to blow my $30 Google Play Credit on

Sheild TV arrived today from Amazon USA, to me here in the UK and I activated my $30 credit via a vpn.
I bought it mainly to run emulators on but is there anything really worth buying in the play store or should I save the credit for the upcoming stuff.
I was leaning towards Doom 3 BFE as I missed out on that on the PC somehow, but it has mixed reviews on the play store?
Any suggestions or other recommendations? I tend to prefer action games over puzzle or strategy games if that helps. Do the Shield games go on sale like the other play store stuff, I can't seem to find a good play store price tracker?

I bought my Shield via Amazon a couple of months ago. Never figured out how to get the Google Play credit. Did you get a redemption email or something because I don't think I did?
PS: I also live in the UK.
In US there is a Google Play Store sale. Not sure about UK but picked up NBA jam for 60 cents. I used my credit for small purchases. Droidmote, robert bruglia's sega emulator, gamesome frontend donation. I can't see spending it all on only halflife & doom

Yes just talk to Amazon on life chat. They will give you the key. You have to redeam that on the Nvidia website and they email you the actual Google play redemption key. Change your play settings to a us store and fictitious us address and then redeeam the key. If you Google there are numerous guide on how to do it. But pm me if you get stuck
I got the movie "Home" because my nieces stayed the night the day it came in.
A few emulators that were Shield friendly.
Doom 3 because I remembered it being pretty fun.
Just to say thanks to @baileyjr who I PMd and helped me too get the 30 USD credit
Now I too have a predicament of what to spend it on. For anyone who has spare PS3 (or PS4) controllers lying around, I'd highly recommend the paid app Sixaxis Controller: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dancingpixelstudios.sixaxiscontroller (requires root).
Other paid games which I enjoy are:
~ $7: Wind-Up Knight 2 (Platform) (IAP Unlock)
£0.79: Goat Simulator (Comedy)
£5.00: GTA: San Andreas
£1.59: Riptide GP2
$10 Each: Portal and the Half Life 2 Episodes (Puzzle)
I know you said you don't like puzzle games baileyjr, but for anyone else Half-Life 2 is one of the best and does have plenty of action too. It's graphics seem to have been slightly upgraded since its PC release in 2004 and it has about the best graphics of any Shield TV game I've played so far.
As for emulators, before I try any paid emulators I'm going to have a crack at the open source, multiplatform Retroarch which just received a major update.

Last night I picked up Doom 3 and for some bizarre reason it didn't deduct any funds out of my credit, so I then picked up Half Life 2 as well, I will have a look at HL2 episode 2 as well :good:
Emulators I can highly recommend and are free are:
PPSSPP https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.ppsspp.ppsspp&hl=en
Reicast https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.reicast.emulator&hl=en_GB
Mupen 64 alpha 21 http://www.paulscode.com/forum/index.php?topic=1818.0
The alpha of Mupen 64 is not availiable in the play store and is far better and easier to set up than the retroarch version.
Also Dolphin is worth a look, but its not running at full speed yet apart for few odd games.
I'm really glad you got it all sorted out. And remember Amazon should refund your import charges deposit if it came through without inuring any. Hit them up on a live chat if you dont get them back.
Out of curiosity what are you guys from uk using for the us plug ? just a travel adapter ? that's what i'm using but would like a proper uk power lead
Yes just a travel adaptor
I'm also using a US power adapter. I'm really hoping they sell the UK brick separately after the Shield's UK release as I don't want to be stuck with a US adapter forever.
Anyone know of any good n64, snes, gamecube, or nes emulators? Nothing has been working well for me
Most of the apps that I've purchased have been emulators or apps that somehow compliment the emulators.
What I've bought so far:
Drastic: DS emulator that works great for DS games that don't require touch input.
PPSSPP Gold: Amazing PSP emulator.
ePSXe: PS1 emulator
FolderSync: Lets you sync local folders with remote folders (using services such as Dropbox). I use this to sync my game saves to Dropbox so that I can have my game saves synced across all of my devices.
Tasker: I use Tasker to trigger FolderSync to sync all of my folder pairs when my device receives a certain text (so that I can trigger a folder sync when I don't have access to the device) .
My Game Collection: Lets you keep track of and organize your video game library.
There are a few more apps that I've bought but they aren't related to emulation/gaming.
