[Q]software update files - HD2 Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting an

after zune downloads the update, it has to store the files somewhere before deploying them to the phone, right? so, does anyone know where zune would store these temporary files? i couldn't find any relation between zune and my temp folder, so i will assume that it does something else, or that i am wrong. any ideas? i just want to see what i can make of them, or out of curiosity if you want.

process explorers view on the update
attached is a log of a network and file monitor while zune was doing the update.

is that a successful flash you have there? if you can find out which files its bulking at you could then do a compare with the same working file from an HD7 assuming the file isnt encoded in some way it might then allow us to see what needs changed, unless of course it has nothing to do with the registry and its actually doing some kind of IMEI check or somekind of hardware scan
another posibility is that its bulking because its finding something in the ROM that is consistant only to the DFT release s file name, reg settings or perhaps some hardware ID

Well I got this far, it backup my settings, after a few reboots and one disconnect, but I got " We couldn't back up your phone because your registry settings are incorrect."
What if I simply remove the SD, reset device, and the partition is set on device instead of on SD. It appears that other than some basic hardware reg tweaks for the ROM the original DFT(ROM) is pretty close to stock. Im more curious about Microsoft's update and implantation procedures and possibility of bypassing than just simply updating my HD2. I figure a rom with updates will be provided soon enough. What do you all think?

Thanks for providing this, seems that's where were stuck at. For now... bwa haha lol (joke).

If you're interested in the update file, I zipped up and attached what I found. Windows Phone 7 Connector (Mac OS X) stores the files in
~/Library/Application Support/Windows Phone 7 Connector/Cache/Device Update/
The update seems to be packaged in a MS cabinet file, with file extension .pks. The contents of this cab are the following:

no there isn't a solution for now, just wait till a mod cooks up a rom with the new update.

Official M3100 AKU3 update from Orange failed, now stuck on bootloader screen, help!

My main phone is my M3100 which I've been using for a few months now, and wanted to update to the latest ROM from Orange (http://www.business.orange.co.uk/servlet/Satellite?pagename=Business&c=OUKPage&cid=1044134915191) hoping to resolve a call dropping problem I'd been experiencing lately.
My father recently upgraded to the same phone but hadn't used his yet, this too had the same firmware version as the one I have so I decided to update his first as he had no personal data stored on it.
Downloaded the 42Mb file, tried to run it but received an error. I googled this and found most people to be using winrar to extract the update files from the Orange .exe, which I did. This seemed to complete fully in about 10min and no problems showed up. I rebooted the phone but it just went back into the three colour screen. The update from Orange now doesn't recognise the phone so I'm unable to run that again.
On the bootloader screen is displayed:
HERM100
I PL-1.01
HERM100
SPL-1.09
Then at the bottom it says Serial (or USB if connected)
I gave Orange a call on handset faults tonight but they were already closed.
Could anyone point me in the right direction here please, I'm really stuck on this and the worst bit is it isn't my phone.
Thanks in advance.
No worries.
I suspect your phone will be fine.
Check the following:
The Wiki
The upgrading forum
The bricked Hermes thread
Or, maybe someone hanging out at the IRC channel can help out.
Thanks for that. I'll have a look through the links you've given.
As the update was provided by Orange I presumed it would be straight forward and work, seems I was wrong.
It is easy - all you need to do is establish an activesync connection and then double click the orange .exe fike you downloaded... What needs extracting?

Yeah, that's what I thought. I've applied updates to Windows Mobiles in the past like this and they worked fine.
When I double click the orange .exe file I get an error message which says part is corrupt, I've downloaded it several times but it still says it's corrupt in some way. The way around this I found on google was to use winrar to extract the exe and run the update file found within it.
I now can't establish an activesync connection and get Invalid Vendor ID error saying it can't be used on this device.

Just general advice this is mate -
As a rule of thumb I'd only 'force' the extraction of files from a currupt download, be it exe or another type, if you are looking from one or some files from within that set which may have survived the corruption. Even then it depends very much on what you're doing with the files afterward. If unsure, best avoided.
With the rom update, you're getting an exe file - albeit a compressed, self-extracting file that WinRAR or Winzip, 7-Zip etc. can work with - that really does need everything within it intact to work.
You've been unlucky in a way because had a different part of the download been corrupt it might not have run in the first place after extraction.
Hopefully you've got it all up and running by now from the pages posted above.

I was a little reluctant to try what I did, but had read of others who'd had the same issue with the download and it had worked for them.

I had a go the other night at it but didn't get anywhere, about to have another go now.

Ok found ICSinstall.cab on here and installed it, soft reset, and attempted to install the latest version of the WMWifiRouter program (which I finally succeeded in sourcing!).
However I get a message telling me cryptically that it 'cannot be installed' after attempting install. I wonder if this is related to ICS...
I now have the InShrUI.exe file in /windows/ *but* attempting to run it gives:
'The file 'IntShrUI' cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate or one of it's components cannot be found. You might need to reinstall or restore this file.'
I reinstalled it over itself (i.e. ran the cab again) same error.
:-/
Was this the right file? I seem to remember it was dated 11th January 2008??
Thanks again for hte help folks!
I should say I'm running Microsoft Windows Mobile Version 5.0 (OS5.1.195 (build 14955.2.3.0).
Lastly I should say I've started a new topic as the last one was getting a bit off topic my original concern having been answered :-D (thanks guys!)
probably you only opened a shortcut (*.ink) and the shortcut pointed to a not existing file. Another thing is that it also was intsalled correctly (the *.exe), but the dll's or whatever are not installed.
Regards
Thanks. I'll try redownloading and repeating.
I was wondering if the file needed signed with some unique private key or something?
Anyways will give it a shot and report back

Thanks for your suggestion I'm now a tiny bit further on.
On soft resetting the PPC I get the following error:
'Pocket PC Networking
Unable to obtain a server assigned IP address. Try again later or enter an IP address in Network settings.'
InShrUI is still giving the same error as before (and it's definately the .exe file I'm clicking).
However the improvement is: This time WMWifiRouter succeeded in installing...
However the same PPC networking error occurred during the install. I could probably tweak whatever is causing that error to use a static IP address rather than DHCP probably...but it's kind of dodging the problem.
And as said before I can't launch IntShrUI without getting that error. This time there is a shortcut to it though in program files.
I should also say that neither the executable or the shortcut has an Icon Image (i.e. it's the default no icon blank) so I suppose it might be the .exe file that's corrupt (since the shortcut get's it's icon from there I think?).
Last but not least:
WMWifiRouter reads:
Code:
'Not Connected'
Waiting for connection
I suspect the problem must lie with InShrUI but then again I'm a noob so I'll wait for the XDA gods to come and share their wisdom!

Is there no1 who can answer this? Anyone got any ideas?
Device is a hermes (T-mobile Vario-II) running WM5.....
There's one MAN point up for grabs for whoever can solve it!
I tried installing WMWifiRouter 0.89 onto a ROM which didn't have ICS included (which meant I had to try the same route you did) onto my Vario 2... I just couldn't get it to work, and I spent a while trying to make it work too.
I'm figuring that there's some deep-seated DLL or system association which ICS needs, which isn't configured if ICS is stripped out of the ROM - I ended up just reflashing with another ROM (the T-Mobile WM6.0 official ROM) and ICS and WMWifiRouter works fine.
Sorry that's not a solution, but it's the only way I could get it to work. Not an expert ROM cooker, so my knowledge of how ICS is stripped / included in ROMs is fairly limited, though I understand the concepts and techniques.
Thanks for your help Christopher.
I considered flashing a working ROM. My worry is about losing all the programs I have installed on the device (it took a long time to get it *this* customised ;-) ) is there any way to flash the new ROM while keeping the old registry entries etc. for registering my programs (Especially those I've bought such as Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine - which I cannot register anymore)? ...
Or could I somehow back up the registry and restore it later (I know that's likely to be a dangerous idea...perhaps simply the file associations and programs stuff -the windows mobile section?)
Thanks bro!

Bumping as no replies for ages
Anyone?
Bumping again as no replies for a week or so
Bumping again to ask if anyone knows a way of slving this without having to reinstall all my programs, re register them, and reconfigure everything? (which I suspect installing a different ROM will do?) is it possible to back up the registry entries for all of my programs then do the ROM upgrade and restore the registry entries from my other programsMost of my programs are installed on the microSD card anyway (i didn't want to use up the main memory and slow the device up).??
If so how?
Thanks again folks !
I have the same problem...
I cant seem to find the answer but will continue to try.
if your programs are installed on your memory card then chances are you should be able to past shortcuts into the programs directory after reflashing. I tend to do this BUT I have found some programs that need to be re-installed or re-registered. Backing up registries can cause SERIOUS problems in itself so I would 1st do a full backup of your system (try spb backup, it backs up EVERYTHING on the phone then re-installs the lot so it seems like you never had a problem..) then flash. Try putting on shortcuts and if you have no luck you have the choice to start again on the new os or reflash to old and then restore backup (old problems wil still be there). Hope this helps.
Ps. I use resco explorer instead of the crap file explorer on the phone. It allows MUCH more versatility to do as I want. Cheers....

Hi
Me too.
Got this damn error code: 80180089 when tried to updae my HD2. It says that it cannot backup my phone due to a registry change. There should be a way to update without having to backup first.
Same Problem with my HD2. I do not want a damn backup. If something goes wrong i would simply reinstall everything. That is annoying. I Hope there will be a solution comming up. :-/
hi
in the process of updating - registry error, error code: 80180089 on my HD2
but works fine. yet...
I think we need registry data of original wp7 to install update, because our cracked windows registry is demaged or not full. have someone tried to reset phone and install update on wp7?
do any of you actually read the threads? dont update tot he new version
i have read and why don't update a new version? it seems that problem in registry and some users who updated their phones it works fine, not blocking and chevron tool for deploying xap files still exists. i think its not harmful for our cracked hd2 to have an updates.
tried to update my hd2, too and got the same error. but no problems appeared... so i guess i just wait until someone finds a solution for this

The update doesn't work for anyone with HD2s... it was known from beginning that automatic updates would not work with HD2... we have a ported wp7 on our devices.
Tried a reset and the update still did not work. Same registry error. Not surprised just want to try and share the info.
First I got the error code 801812C1 but after two retries that went through. The registry error code 80180089 can’t be bypassed.
Manual injection of CAB files in the future I guess. Yes I know custom ROM on a unsupported phone.
Don't kill the messenger. I'm just sharing info here.
Used XP SP3 with newest zune software.

Do you think we will be able to update our HD2s then?
I don't think so, but I like surprises
Probably will not work on the HD2 since its most likely looking for anything funny in the registry. Pick your choice, not the right hardware, hacked OS, chevron, side load apps, custom settings. Unless if people that have virgin phones and still get the same errors then anything is possible. They might have to allow future updates to have more variations or be more lenient on what its looking for before the patch gets installed. That’s my two cents anyway.
Phones: G1, ATT ARIA, HD2
In a microsoft thread, I read that the problem with samsung omnia 7 is about backing up the phone. The same as HD2. So I think there might be some hopes for us
maybe the problem come from detected usb hardware driver that seem to be different from that in hd7.. i say this because when the hd2 display shown the icon of pc & hd2 , after the first reboot, a symbol no usb connection appear.
Its a pointless update, why bother...
Tried... but failed

No, I'm sure that was just telling us not to remove the USB connection ha ha. I just tried the update, same error code. Remaining hopeful that this is same problem as Omnia or whichever phone was mentioned before, but I have doubts and wont be too shocked if it has nothing to do with it and we cant update the OS this way. If this doesn't work someone will come up with something. Might just have to reflash with each major update. It wuld be annoying but its better than nothing ha ha.
Customized ROM from HD2 can't Update the OS! HD2 owners should wait until devs cook the update in their Roms! This update is pointless but actually Microsoft made this update to prepare your phone for the next update! (??LOL??) I know that you guys made the tweak in order to disguise the HD2 to HD7 but still... So be more patient or buy an official WP7 as i did!

NoDo. Want to get it right now? [Not tested with HD2 yet]

So NoDo was finally released this morning.
Well, for the EU people anyway (don’t get me started).
Windows Phone 7, by default, stores your operator identifier in a sneaky registry key, which is checked by the Windows Update Client running on the phone. This identifier is then used to check if the updates have been approved for your operator. If they are slow, like Telstra here is in Australia, you’re going to be waiting a long time.
So, let’s tell you how you can “un-brand” (this won’t remove the boot splash screen) your phone so it appears to be a generic handset to the Update Servers.
Your device needs to be dev-unlocked for this to work. Sorry folks.
1. Download this zip file and deploy the 3 xap files onto your device.
2. Run the ChevronWP7.Ringtones.xap and wait till it displays “Ringtones added… and CustClear.provxml underneath”
3. Run the TouchXplorer app, navigate to My DocumentsMy Ringtones click on CustClear.provxml and select Copy from the Application Bar.
4. Navigate back inside TouchXplorer to the Windows folder.
5. Select paste from the Application Bar, this should scroll right to the bottom and put a copy of CustClear.provxml in the Windows folder.
6. Now run the Connection Setup application and click on the Ok button (it’s the one with the tick).
And now you’re done and free to re-connect to Zune and check for updates.
Again, this is ONLY for HTC devices.

Hi guys! I didn't test this method for HD2 yet cause I still on Android. Try it out.
Has this been cooked for the HD2 already? I'll give it a try as long as I know it won't brick my HD2
IT ONLY SHOWS PHONE UPDATE FEB 2011
any idea why i am not able to see nodo update
There is another thread about this already in Q&A and General. It seems as though this method is for native WP7 devices to work around zonal or carrier based restrictions.
It has been tried on an HD2 in the other thread and the same registry issues that affected the February update prevail. This does not appear to be a solution for HD2 owners.

Yea, just playing around, problem is in registry.
hello,
do you know if it works on HD2 ? if I try, will I keep everything (sms, apps, ...) ?
thanks !
This does not work, it has been said hundreds times
Has everybody been taking crack lately?
How do you expect to be able to do a official update to NoDo when our roms are modded to work on the HD2, its not a native rom so even if you could get it to update through official channel it would very likely break the installation anyway.
Use some common sense guys have some patience and wait for the update to be cooked into HD2 rom.

7.8 from Mango in one download and 10 steps

Everything you need from Mango (DVPs normally upgrade to Mango on their own) to 7.8 is there..
#1 - First be sure your phone has gone through the normal procedure to 7720 (Mango)
#2 - Then go here: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/15491148/Update - DVP.zip
Done.. and done..
This worked amazingly well - thanks for posting all the right info and files together in one easy place!
Thank you! It worked!!

Also how do you know why it update is finished? I ran all 7 cabs through the sender and nothing happened.

OK.. First off remember to move the CABs in order to the folder th BAT file is in, don't move the BAT to the CAB folder.
This will work with any version post Mango.. Just start with the set of CABs you last ended with.
IE, if you have 8107, go to the folder after 8107 and use those CABs..till 7.8..
Other tips..
1) Make sure you have upgrade via Zune to Mango first
2) Make sure Zune is off
3) make sure you install the WP07 support tools before running the BAT file.
4) to ensure a clean install of all filess.. Hard reset the phone. Before installing all the CAB files.
Hope that helps.. Remember when all else fails read the directions.

So remember :
Create folder and unzip all the files and folders into the directory (We will call it UPDATE and put it on the desktop for example)
Install WP7 Update Tool (See folder --> update tool - INSTALL FIRST)
Start by moving the files in CABS/7740 folder to the main UPDATE folder you created (the one with the BAT file in it) and run the bat.
In command windows hit <S>
Let phone go through the upgrade process
After successful upgrade, move the 7740 file(s) from main folder, and replace with CABs from the next folder (8107) in the order
Run the BAT again.

Yup, I upgraded my son's from 8107, just started by using the next higher numbered CABS folder. Thanks to the OP!
Just followed this on my unlocked AT&T DVP. Went from Mango to 7.8 in about 30 minutes total, with no issues during installation. Still testing the phone out o see if everything works, but so far so good.
Awesome stuff dude, thanks! Very easy to follow instructions that are noob safe.
Worked.
Thank You.
FWIW, I had success upgrading using this method from 8773, without resetting the device.
Didn't work for me!
I have DVP unlocked updated to Mango but this didn't work for me, Error is attached. This happened with every folder. I tried upto 3 ..

I already had the 8773 update, thats why I was getting error. I started from folder 8779 and it worked fine.
If you try to run BAT file as Run As administrator , you will also get different error related to update file not found.. so make sure just to double click to run bat file or run through command prompt!
Awesome
You are GOD in my eyes !! ;.)) - totally worked ! - i had a 7720. fw in my dvp, - i upgraded with these cabs , and voala - it's worked !!
=.))
Thanks a lot! Sprinkled your magic dust, said the magic spell and it worked!
Awesome utility!
A big thanks to cdgoin for writing this incredibly useful program!
Had a couple hiccups getting it to work for me...thought I'd post them for the benefit of others...
1: I was getting a 'Choice is not a recognized command' error message initially. Turns out I guess XP doesn't have choice.exe installed by default. Got a copy from Microsoft's Windows 98 resource kit and installed, only to have it tell me it didn't like one of the command switches called in the batch file. Went in with a text editor - Looked like the /N switch was OK but the other wasn't (/M?). Deleted that and was finally presented with the menu as described.
2: But then, pressing 's' results in long error message about 'Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID blahblah failed .....error 8007007e'
Deduced it was trying to call an unregistered DLL. This may have something to do with my Zune installation being on a separate partition from my windows installation. Went to the directory I'd put the WP tools in and registered the Microsoft updater's DLL from the command prompt: "regsrv32 wm7update.dll".
Following this, all worked as expected!
wifi issue?
Any one else having wifi connection issues after the update?
I can longer connect to my APs.
Thanks
What about live tiles? I read that live tiles are a mess in 7.8.
