I am looking to buy a tablet, and I can not afford the newest one simply because they are too expensive.
I may be able to get the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7" and I was wondering if it was still worth it.
Is it the screen very responsive? Is it fast? Is 2.3 that important and should I look for a newer one, or is this product still good in terms of browsing the web, documents, some games, music?
And between this and the Toshiba Folio, bearing in mind the Folio is much cheaper, which would you pick? (or do you have another suggestion? I live in France)

i've never heard of the folio before. i just googled it, hands off!
I also have little money. that's why i first imported the nook color (250$ + 120€ (shipping & german tax & customs)), its a very good tablet, bit I had problems with the display and I wanted a tablet with more connectivity (3g, gps, camera etc.)
I've sold the nook and bought the sgt used for 295€ at ebay.de.
it actually was cheaper than importing the nook and I hope that I will be happy with it.
I dont recommend any cheap android tablets, they all have a big list of cons. the only cheap android tablet you can get is the nook, but its only cheap if you live in the us.
i dont have my sgt yet, but from what i hear and i read its seams to be the most capable and cheapest high quality tablet out there.
The folio is highly recommended not to get! trust me toshiba sucks in the mobile industry. it has many bugs reported just like my TG01. They even cancelled the product line up here in the UK. Personlly i find my tab slow + laggy. You need a dual core tablet to power the mighty screen. I would get the HTC Flyer if i were you.

Stock the tab is fast enough to get work done. I did the KhasMek Voodoo Plus v3 OC kernal mod and the tab flys now. I have a Xoom also and this kernal for the SGT made it faster than my Xoom. The screen is also very responsive. Personally I think this is a fantastic tablet it just works with no fuss. Although, if I keep messing with it, that may no longer be the case. Mine is running 2.2 and I have no desire to put 2.3 on it any time soon. Not that it means allot Quadrant is running between 2100 and 2300 for my SGT. My Xoom runs it 1800 to 1900.

I just got my Sprint Tab a couple of days ago and I love it. I already had an iPad but wanted something different and more portable. Its plenty fast and responsive and just really seems to hit the sweet spot for me.
I replace my Archos 70 8GB with Galaxy Tab Wifi ($390.- at local shop in Bangkok). It is much better than my Archos which I think it was a great product.
The screen is very responsive and the LCD quality is excellent (PLS technology).
I don't find it laggy at all. Only negative area is it can't play HD video. (Galaxy Tab 3G use more powerful CPU/Chip). It's superb in other areas.
The tab is rock solid on Froyo! Yes the stock lags at times but till date it had yet to crash or freeze...with Roto JMIv2 the thing flies!
Am absolutely in love with it and if I had the money I would buy another one...the 7 inch size and Froyo is darn good....I don't understand at all what the people who complain about Froyo being not optimized for tablet are talking about...!!! All apps I have loaded till date works great! I watch movies anime and tv show on this...my netbook is lying in storage since I got this and when on personal travel I shove the tab into the camera bag with the kindle and off I go...
Pop in a sim card and I can surf the net anywhere...much better than surfing on a tiny screen on a mobile phone...
Am never going to consider anything above 7 inch and without being SIM enabled.

I've had mine GT for about a month and really enjoy it. Easier to haul around than a Netbook, or in Ipad or Xoom even.
I had a Nook, but didn't like it as the screen was of cheap quality(the whites had a yellow tint to it(tried another, it was the same). The whites on the GT are WHITE no doubt about it. Build quality is very solid on the GT.
However, if you are on a budget, nook is fairly solid with the proper software roms.
But the GT is very solid and even with the release of the WIFI version only soon, it will bring even more users in the fold.
There is a lot of people holding off for the "Next best thing" but, honestly, I'd rather be playing and using something now, instead of waiting 6 months or so to play with something that May or May not kick ass.
Dive right in, the GT water is fine.

I believe Galaxy Tab is now the best 7" tablet in the market (Archos 70 is the second, IMO); both spec/performance-wise and build quality. The price is also coming down to a more acceptable level.
I don't see any new 7" model coming out in the near future. If you are looking for a portable table, Galaxy Tab won't disappoint you.
I had my Tab for 2 months now and couldn't be happier with it. I do have the Overcome ROM and over clocked to 1.2GHz so its not stock (512Mb RAM is a bit limited as only 200Mb is usable).
I did have a Dell Strek 5" and an ipad, sold both since I got the Tab. To me the size makes it very versatile, I can fit it into most of my jackets and cary it all day without any discomfort.
Also the only other 7" tablet is the Dell Streak 7 which has shorter battery life and poor screen viewing angle, both are deal breaker for me. Plus I'd prefer a device with more RAM than dual core CPU.
The HTC Flyer is not out yet, and will cost almost twice what the Tab is selling.
P.S. ASDA Direct is selling the Tab for £299.

SGT has had bad press and is severely underrated. I blame Samsung for positioning it at too high a price initially, and the tech press for comparing it directly with an iPad - which it is not. It's still the best small format tablet available and in the UK at least is a bargain at £299 or so. You'd pay a lot more for a lesser smartphone. Good thing is that Samsung seem to have finally woken up to this fact, and their next tablet releases look a lot more competitive price-wise. I'd still buy one now if I lost it though, purely due to how useful it is.

I have had my Tab for a while now and I love it. If I were you I would look for one on craigslist and one made for Tmobile. I say Tmobile because wth them you can use the tab with out getting a contract. I have heard that the sprint and verizon tabs force u to activate there's. And the size to me is great, a 10 inch screen just seems to big, if I wanted one that size I would just get a netbook. I also have the keyboard for it and the media dock which works great. I bought the media dock and keyboard from verizon and they gave me a discount for buying two accesories at once, so I saved some money.

OCLF is a waste of time if you are on an EXT4 ROM.
Personally, i'm not convinced it does much on RFS ROMs either, other than improve the incredibly flawed Quadrant benchmark scores.

I still use mine all the time despite buying the xoom. Works best in the car and as alarm clock.
I am really interested in getting tablet, only thing holding me back is the price. I can only seem to find it on ebay (looking for wifi version, live in the US) and its around $500 despite being out for a while. It just puzzles me that the 10.1 (which I currently have) is a lot cheaper than this. Can the AMOLED screen really bump the price up? Or is it that Samsung didn't make too many of these therefore increasing demand thus raising price?

Actually they set the price just below the maximum amount that customers in that region are willingly to spent, regardless of the cost. I know this fact doesn't help you much.
May be the super amoled+, amazingly lightweight and incredible slim design would be worthy? I for one spent extra on them.

7.7 is not much faster then 10.1, battery life 10.1 better, 7.7 better screen and smaller yes

if it once by mistake fell down from your hands it will have lots of ugly bumps and scratches even each of its four corners get scratch by it self they are using some kind of cheap plastic to make a back side but super amoled+ is great much tougher than its lightweight and incredible slim body

As a matter of fact, it did, fall from my hand, in a public toilet, toward a moist ground which I didn't want my tablet falling onto. I attempted to grab it mid-air, but out of panic I flapped it toward the opposite wall a meter away, and regardless of my efforts, it still hit the floor. It slided for about 2 meters before it finally stopped by fiction.
Fortunately for me it slided face up. The back panel got some slight scratch on the plastic corner, and an unnoticeable scratch on the metal brand name "Samsung". Amazingly there isn't a noticable scratch on the main metal back panel, though I am sure it must have been in contact with the rough toilet ground.
Regardless of the impacts the tablet is still running without a glitch. This device is more robust than I thought.

I disagree.
Just got my 7.7 and sold my 10.1. The 7.7 is much snappier and more responsive in every way. One thing that drove me nuts was how laggy the 10.1's gyrometer was in responding to screen rotation. Loading apps and app animation were smoother.
Another issue with the 10.1 was, half the time wifi would take longer (up to 1 min) to connect after wake from sleep. Sometimes, I even need to toggle wifi on/off to force connection. So far, the 7.7 connects instantly (2 s) from every wake.
Finally, the 10.1 must have older graphics hardware. When I use MX video to play a variety of movie formats, some require additional codec download as the files were not compatible with the H/W decoder. For the 7.7 (and a Galaxy Note that I had before), all the movies that I have, originally converted for iPad, work with the H/W decoder.

To defend the 10.1 which I use on a daily basis for a large variety of things, from youtube to reading documents and pdfs. You obviously had not rooted it and run a custom rom on it. There are a few roms out for it and Galaxy task is one hell of a rom. My wifi is instantaneous (I have set to turn off when screen turns off, but when I turn the screen on, wifi connects my to the internet and google servers before I even pass the lockscreen) and it doesn't lag for me that severely (lag still exists, just not crazy lag to the point of being frozen). The gyroscope when turning the tablet isn't instant, but its not long enough to bother you(takes less than a second to respond).
The main reason I want the 7.7 is because I could go for something a bit smaller than the 10.1, not a 7" tab though. Also being so used to the AMOLED of my S2, I'd really like a tablet to have the same quality screen. I'm thinking about waiting for the Toshiba Excite 7.7 and seeing what happens to the price of this then.

One thing about the gyroscope sensor in, probably, all android tablet devices is that they are not very instant, are they ?
(if you compare to iPad's, it's tad score slower and is not very responsive )
Note that I will and can only fully justify this once I've got this tab on my hand. But experiences on stores showing that the response is very slow. There is even a 7.7" tab on store display that sometimes get "stuck" in orientation when you change from landscape - portrait and vice versa
Now, is it just because it's HC issue or is it more because of TW issue ?
( all store display will run HC - TW by default )
Would installing Go Launcher HD solve or improve the response ?
I have S2 and it doesn't really have this problem

Just got a 7.7 yesterday and I can say I have been buying Android tablets since the chinese have started doing them (which means I bought a lot of crap lol).
Never held a tablet that gave such a feeling of quality when you hold and use it. Never had a tablet not crashing once while using it for a whole evening. And I could not believe how good the sound is albeit not very loud. First tablet ever with 0 light bleed, by now I thought it was impossible for this to happen.
This thing smells of quality like nothing else, definitely in another league than the Asus stuff for example. It's like Samsung said let's use the best of everything and put it together.
No ICS yet, but besides extra smoothness when navigating within the OS, it's not like it's day and night when you are actually doing something in an app. For having had different tablets that were updated to ICS, I know it's better to have no ICS than buggy ICS that's crashes or eats battery like a monster.

There's a horizontal calibration option somewhere in the main settings. This might help the gyro. Overall I don't think its as responsive as an ipad.

7.7 is worth every $ because
- it's Super AMLED screen is work outdoor.
- Screen density.
- 5000 mAh Battery. & Use as phone : with good BlueTooth, this is only 1 android device that battery over 75% at the end f the day.
- Weight & Handling : Best of single hand's handling.
7.7 price is high but If you use as tablet , Phone , BIG! GPS in car , Movie Player in car
, it totally worth.
OK guys. I caved in and bought the wifi version today. Should be here in a few days, am pretty excited. I'm a student so I'll be using it for browsing, reading documents and pdfs, also movie/YouTube viewing. Didn't need the phone version since I have the sgs2 which is super great btw.
A few questions though, is it just me or us the development slow? I'd think with a superb tablet like this, there would be tons of developers flocking here.
Also any other issues due to software I should know about?
Does this tablet have haptic feedback?
And finally any accessories to recommend? I only bought some anti glare protectors on Amazon.
And one last thing to do, sell my current tab lol

I think development is slow because of it is expensive, and not many devs have this, over say the 10.1 or 7.0 counterparts.
Nonetheless, aside from other users saying that it has a great battery and screen, I would say that not other tablets have a built-in phone. So the fact that this can double as one, it sounds a lot more reasonable doesn't it!
I've bought mine from Dixons, in the Netherlands, for 479 EUR early this month.
I can't force myself to considering it expensive, no matter how I look at it and taking into consideration what it offers me, for the price.
The single fact that it can double as phone - and as a smart one, for that matter - is reason enough to consider this a bargain, let alone the incredible screen, the form factor, the ability to take 64Gb Micros Sds or the USB with host controller capability.
If anything, for what it so aptly does, this one is pretty cheap, me thinks...

No, it is not, precisely... (at least over here)
My 7.7: 479 EUR
iPad3 16Gb, Wifi+3/4G: 599 (...the same all over Europe. Apple has a tight hand on pricing...)
So, for 120 EUR less (!) I got:
1. A better display.
2. A better format (subjective)
3. The ability to expand the internal 16Gb with 64Gb more, via the SD slot.
4. The ability to use an host enabled USB slot.
5. The ability to use it as a phone.
6. Complete customization for my particular needs, supported by an ever-helping, outstanding community.
Now, if this is not a deal, I don't know what is...

As I posted in the other thread, you can get it in switzerland for 499chf thats 415euros. Maybe you can import them to other european countries but beware of local sales tax.

Here we go another boring review of the ZF2, I'll try to make it short and sweet...
Canadian Version, Asus Zenfone 2, 4g/64gb Silver version
What I came from?
Samsung Galaxy S5 16g, truly loved this phone when I got it less then a year ago. Has been serving me good until Lollipop update which on a 16gb version phone doesn't leave you much to play with. Even apps/games copied to MicroSD, I was left with 1 gb left on the phone to use and no idea what was chewing up the memory. My S5 was starting to lag a bit on a daily usage.
When I got the ZF2...
I wasn't looking to get a new phone but when my neighbour bought one, she had me set it up for her, that did it, I went out and bought it the next day, it was truly that good in my hands. It literally blew my S5 away in so many ways and I'll outline some of them here.
Unrealistic reviews...
I did a lot of reading that evening on the ZF2 before I got it, a good 10 hours of reading to be exact. The only things that I didn't like pre-purchase was the obvious, battery life, top power button and the non-removeable battery. I was quite amazed that a lot of people were listing negatives of the ZF2 compared to high end phones, ok ppl, this is not rated as a high-end phone although it competes quite close to them. You need to understand that you are comparing a $380 cdn phone to $800 to $1100 phones, apples and oranges folks.
Some glitches I've noticed...
Well, only one but not a huge deal. A couple of my games start up fine but controls are way off, ie. the controls are mirrored, meaning where the screen joysticks are, the sensitive is actually mirrored vertically, weird. The rest of my games are fine, just a couple I've noticed. Again, I don't play a lot of games so not a big deal. The other is we have LTE here and I'm use to the LTE icon on the status bar, on the ZF2, it just says 4G, which is basically the same thing, again, cosmetics, the speed is the same if not faster then my S5 for internet.
What I love...
Not sure what everyone is complaining about the battery, I haven't noticed any excessive drain then the usual, I get a whole day of usage from mine and even a bit left over before it hits the charger. This was the same as my S5 maybe a tad more probably because of the bigger screen. The fast charging makes up for this, the S5 took forever to charge. Also, the S5 was waterproof IF you remember to close the sync door lol.
In the end my decisions were the 64gb, you don't know how much nicer that is compared to a 16gb until you have the amount of apps/games I do Speed, this phone is insanely smooth and fast, I've used the Galaxy S6 and I'm not able to tell the difference between the two under normal use. Dual-sim, I use a US/Mexico Roam Mobility sim, so I can just leave this in my phone and activate it when I'm in those areas, nice and convenient. Screen size is nice and big but I'm not a big screen phone fan, single hand use is tough. Fast battery charging, this phone charges super fast.
Overall this phone I've had for about a week now has served me well. The screen is not as bright as my SuperAMOLED S5 but again, the price makes up for that. Screen looks good to me though, pictures are vivid, HD MKV movies play perfect, no complaints there. The outer case is fine, a little slippery, doesn't look cheap, volume buttons are oddly in the center on the back but I'm starting to like it there, I use to have fiddle around with my S5 on the sides and almost dropped the phone a couple of times doing so, the ZF2 volume buttons I think is more accessible because my index is naturally there when talking on the phone. A couple of things I did find interesting, the ZF2 has better call quality and reception then my S5 which I find quite odd for a phone that's much cheaper. Unassisted GPS works and syncs very fast using Sygic.
For the price and the caliber of this phone, I say I made the right decision. Unlocked, dual-sim, 4 gb/64gb, Quard-core, 5.5" screen, fast charging, you really can't lose. I just can't wait to get my protective case and glass screen protector, I'm really paranoid about dropping or scratching it now So, I will give it another week or so, if it performs like it does now still, my unlocked Galaxy S5 will probably go on sale with the unfortunately ZF2 incompatible Galaxy Gear watch (damn Samsung )
I can highly recommend the zenwatch to go along with your ZF2. It also punches well above its weight for the price.

What I hate about zf2 is its black plastic bezzel got scratches easily if you are not using any case, second its button does not have any background lights
Yea I've literally received mine today but the first thing I've done is put it in a case. No matter how small a nick you get it will always annoy you.
As to backlit capacitive buttons that's a matter of preference. The last phone I had with them was the S3 and the first thing I did with it was switch the lights of as they annoyed me so much. (-:

the 2nd sim slot is useful for me too, and the double tap to turn on/off is very useful on that big screen (even it consume power)
I've had mine for a few weeks now. I got the 1.8GHz/4GB/32GB model. I came from a 1st gen Moto G.
Pros
- Big, colourful display
- Good performance (in general and on gfx-heavy games)
- Multitasking is a breeze thanks to the RAM
- Great reception (at least compared to my previous phone)
- Native call recording
- Expandable memory
- OTG (although seemingly not NTFS. Disappointing)
Cons
- Average camera (although the app itself is much better than the base Google Camera)
- Average sound volume. I had to bump the dB levels of my mp3s before transferring to the phone (although it's fine through headphones). Misleading speaker grille at the rear of the phone (I was aware of this before purchase)
- Below average sound quality (bass seems almost non-existent/tinny)
- Average screen brightness. Can be very difficult to use in direct sunlight (The 720p model apparently has better brightness)
- Average battery life
- Power button is awkward to reach at times, saved only by double-tap on/off screen
- Volume up/down button on the rear. I use my phone to play radio/music so it sits on a table etc. Having to lift the phone to adjust the volume is a bit of a nuisance

I am quite fond of the device, and have no major issues with it. I am still getting used to the size, and ZenUI is not my favorite., but a custom launcher makes it "feel" better to me. The latest update has done wonders for battery life, which I was initially concerned about as mine was drastically different then the one a good buddy picked up on the same day. For my usage patterns the phone works perfectly well; call quality, camera, audio, radios, and screen responsiveness included.
Some of my biggest pros for the device are: overall speed, storage, SD Card, battery life, camera, quick access lock screen apps, USB OTG, and tap to wake. Oh, and quick charging is awesome, I love it.
My cons are mostly related to all of the ZenUI apps now listed on "My Apps" in the Play Store, the occasional missed gesture, and lack of customization options for the tools on the quick settings panel (which is a nice option to have, but I would like take better advantage of it, especially from the lock screen). I would have loved to have had wireless charging, but if that is a trade off for quick charging, I am fine with it.
All in all, I am more than pleased with the device, and will recommend to anyone not scared of the size.
Maybe we are one of the lucky ones not experiencing the battery drain issue, I get a full days use with some left over on mine, which is what I got from my Galaxy S5. Yeah, I hear ya, the ZenUI is a bit gruesome but I'm a big fan of Nova Prime and that was installed pretty quickly after.
As for the bloatware, some are actually useful, it's not really creating an issue for me, just hide the apps if you don't want to see it and I use the Startup Manager to disable startup on most of them, no biggie. I am however a bit disappointed and I hope Asus reads these threads, with all the bloatware, you would think they could at least put in an app that syncs with Outlook Contacts and Calendar, it is a pretty widely used program but I'm force to buy a 3rd party app that syncs contacts and calendar. I've tried Outlook.com etc, but I'm not a big fan of dumping my contacts and calendar online and syncing that way. Samsung has Kies to do this and so does LG, really, with all the bloatware how hard is it for Asus to create a simple and effective sync app for Outlook.
I hear you with the size thing and the phone is a bit slippery, until my case and screen protector arrives, this is will be handle with extra care, gorilla glass or not I thought my S5 was big to handle, this one is bigger, will take a bit to get use to but I think the phone is worth it.

Something that I forget to mention on the negatives, now having had the phone for several weeks now using it daily are the non-backlit capacitive buttons. In the dark, I generally hit them correctly but having them lit would've been nice to have.
The top power button doesn't really bother, but I'm not sold on the rear volume buttons.
Side mounter externally accessible uSD and SIM slots would've been better as well as a more readily user replaceable battery, beyond that I'm with the review coming from a nexus 5 with the added bonus that this phone is capable of twice the bandwidth(4G) that my n5 was capable of in the identical geopgraphical locations as well as apparently overall better antenna design(better signal reception from just above the n5 to WAY better in many cases...).

Nothing when compared to 1TB maybe, but it's still a considerable chunk of 'free' cloud space. I still have my 50GB from my Moto G offer and that was ~18 months ago. To be honest, I only use ~8GB on my Dropbox/Drive anyway so it wasn't a big pro.
I think their gist was that they didn't make a big (or any) deal of the 100GB. I (and most others) didn't even know it was a thing until we got the phone. The 1TB on those Chromebooks was offered as an incentive and as a kind of offset for the small SSDs that normally come with them. What's on yours? 32/64GB?

I'm with you on the capacitor buttons but I'm starting to get use to it, the double tap on and off on the screen is actually becoming very handy. I come from the Galaxy S5, the lit buttons were nice I wish they had the double tap on and off, I much prefer that.
As for the volume button, I actually find it more natural for me the way I hold the phone if I need to turn the volume up or down while speaking on the phone, personal preference. Also, I'm use to putting my phone down face down on a table/desk because I'm paranoid about something dropping on my screen, this happened to my Galaxy S3, face up on my desk, I went to pick up my coffee mug and it slipped, landed right center on my S3 screen and cracked it and the mug wasn't very high off the desk, ever since then I've been paranoid about leaving my phone anywhere face up. That said, when I'm playing music on my phone, while face down, it's much easier to adjust volume when it's easily accessible on the back top rather then on the sides. Again, personal preference.
Absolutely, side mount accessible cards would be great, but again, you're comparing a phone that's less then half the price of most of the phones that have those features. Even some of the more expensive flagship phones don't have these options either. ie. Nexus, no exp. memory, built in battery also, the new S6 Galaxy, built in battery, no SD Card expansion etc etc. I read endless reviews and I find it hilarious that people out there want a Mercedes Benz phone but want to pay Honda Civic prices. When you build a phone at this price, some corners have to be cut, then when a phone comes out with all these features and the price is high, people complain about the price, you can't win.
I love the phone for what it is and how much it broke my bank, if it does what I need it to do and it's better then my last phone, then I see it as a investment, it's a new phone, there will be issues as all new phones do, Galaxy S6 is having their list of problems just now popping up and so on. The phone is only about a month old maybe? I won't write it off, way too early, talk to me in about 6-8 months, if the same issues persist, then that's another story.
My brother just got his Galaxy S6 Edge phone, I told him about this phone and all he does is knocked the phone down because he has the "almighty" Galaxy S6 Edge, we start comparing features and honestly, it's not that big a list, yes, granted, it has a beautiful screen, bit faster processor (but if you put the two side by side and actually use it, I really can't tell that much of a dif), wireless charging but no SD expansion slot. That's great, but then I asked him how much he paid for it..... $900 plus taxes. No comments.
I'm on AT&T because I still get a hefty discount through my work, so I usually get devices on the Next plan. Right now, I have a fully paid-off HTC One M8 that is still working fine, but it's definitely showing its age in terms of battery life. I could probably make it another year on the M8, but I'm worried that if I don't upgrade soon, I'll miss the window on a rootable flagship that I can pay off as part of my phone plan. I've been looking at new devices through AT&T, but I demand at a minimum root on my devices, and AT&T has kicked HTC to the curb.
So, I'm on the fence right now. The Galaxy S7 Edge looks to still be competitive (what with HTC and LG both sticking with SD821 SoCs), has a stable root solution that doesn't trip Knox, and has a significantly larger battery. I'm still not sure about the curved screen at all, but I suspect I could work around that. It also still uses the older USB standard and has a headphone jack (both of which I use a lot, since my car's head unit doesn't do blue tooth) I shouldn't be this torn on the matter, since it is a much better device and meets my needs, but it is still a $700 phone at the moment.
Which leads me to the question. Do you guys still think this is a good phone today?

It does not have a stable root solution. It is very laggy. I've told my wife when my GS7E and her Note 5 are paid off, we are going with off contract phones. You can now get phones from Sony, Huawei, and others that rival the performance of flagships, for around $300. And they usually have root.

I wish I had seen this before I stopped back in at the local AT&T store. I went ahead and opted to try out the S7 Edge, and I have to say, I haven't been terribly impressed so far. The edge, in particular, feels more like a hindrance than a help - especially with the keyboard. I manage to miss all the keys along the edges pretty reliably.
I was also surprised by how much lag there is in the stock "as it came from the factory" ROM. I had read that Samsung had managed to dramatically reduce the lag in TouchWiz, and my Galaxy Tab S2 didn't seem all that bad. Given it has a technically slower SoC (the SD652 vs the SD820), I was a bit shocked at some of the things I saw - like the Play store taking 10s of seconds to populate, app lists seeming to take forever to populate, etc.
My hope is that it's still settling, so I'm going to resist the urge to take it back tomorrow and see how it does by Monday. However, at the moment, I'm not nearly as thrilled with this device as I was when I got my M8 back in 2014.
Take it back. Root is piss poor on this device. If you drop it, even off the couch, it'll more than likely crack one of the 2 glass screens (front and back) and for that kind of money, you'd expect better quality
I have had root on every phone except this one. Once I disabled most Samsung stuff and replaced the launcher, the pho e is quite snappy. However, I could have paid half and got the same experience plus root. The only positive going for this phone is the build quality, it is a premium feeling phone. Hopefully this new root method that is supposedly being developed and tested pans out.

I get the feeling most of the issues here are with the bloat. I sometimes forget that I haven't run a carrier branded ROM in ages. I ran stripped down stock on my Galaxy S2 Skyrocket, and the US Developer Edition on my HTC One M8 - so I almost never see the death star on my devices. Even my Galaxy Tab S2 had some issues when I first got it that were entirely solved by disabling a lot of the bloat on it. Now it actually runs quite well compared to when I bought it, which is what tempted me to try the S7.
I would go with the unbranded stock ROM, but unfortunately, the U version on this device means giving up a lot - VoLTE, HD calling, and WiFi calling - as well as visual voicemail, but that's pretty easy to live without. It's still tempting, but I have to admit, this is the roughest transition I have ever had to a new device.
The SGS2 was brain-dead easy to alter, and I had CWM and SuperSU on there fast. The HTC One M8 was S-off and running US developer the same day. It goes without saying that the Nexus 7 was trivial to root/mod. What amazes me the most, though, is that my 2.5 year old M8 running MM feels less janky than this phone at times, despite it's SD801 SoC vs the SD820 in the S7E . It's just amazing - but I blame the AT&T crap for most of that.
I will say this. I took the Nougat OTA and did a full factory reset, and it is noticeably less laggy/janky now. I am running Nova launcher, and I've disabled as much as I can, but there are still times when it feels like the phone is stuttering a bit.
Part of me still feels like I have made a huge mistake, though. I'm just trying to decide if it's a mistake I can live with, or whether I should just eat the $45 restocking fee and try to repair my M8's battery.
The s7 edge is on sale everwhere, if you can get a great deal on the international version and you don't mind to have last year's tech than the s7 is total worth it, root and development is great on the international version, I even got volte working I have no complaints, I use to have the att version and I wish I switched to international version sooner

It's a good phone but I certainly would not root it. This is from personal experience because mine is rooted and stuck in bootloop which I am currently lookingfor a solution to.
I'm going to go in the other direction than some others on the thread. I think this has been one of the better devices around. Since the Nougat update, it's become a even better device, my battery life has gotten way better too. If I were looking now ( and not needing a device right NOW), I would be waiting for the S8 Edge (since it should be dropping within the next month or 2)
As far as root goes, I've not rooted my device and honestly haven't seen any need for root for a couple of years now.
To answer your last question, it's a GREAT device and if the S8 wasn't coming soon and I needed a device now, I would choose it again over ANY of the current devices out there

I have ZERO issues with mine, I might take the plunge and do a factory reset and take a look at disabling some of the AT&T bloat as well.
I actually got the S7 when the S8 was announced to get the price break, because I have heard rumor that the S8 does away with the fingerprint reader on the front (it's on the back now, which I don't like), it will be USB-C, which means keeping up with another cable type (I already have lightning cables for the iDevices and micro-USB cables for the Androids), and possibly no headphone jack. Short of a USB-C to 3.5" dongle, that wasn't going to fly.
I am hoping the S7 will fly, because it has great hardware. The pictures I have taken with it are amazing. Yet, even unrooted stock felt janky at times. Root made it worse, but I noticed it even before I loaded the engineering kernel. I figure it must be the AT&T crap in the background.

Yeah, the camera is pretty awesome. I'd consider a factory reset, it can be a bit of work, but I think it could help.

The root for this is trash, no fault of the root. I had a T-Mobile variant and I was resetting it every 3 or 4 weeks due to lock ups and crashes. Same with AT&T. I got fed up with the root on it, and got Disabler Pro and eliminated so much junk, it's been a great phone ever since. The only thing I miss in root is the ability to change the icons in the notifications bar and the adblockers that were a lot better, but other than that, the phone is more stable, doesn't have the bloatware, and doesn't frighten me to reboot it while driving home and the phone crashing on boot. I'd still get it, but I'd probably opt at this point to get the Indian variant with 128GB and pearl black for what my pay off would be for this 32GB.
I'm interested in this phone but I'm not sure if I should get it. Currently I have a s6 edge plus on tmobile and read that this phone supports the band's if I get the global version

I truly need Dual SIM for lot of international travel..this is one of the few or only phone that supports 4G/3G dual sim standby. I have heard on T-Mobile even VoLTE works (I am on ATT, don't ask if not for their coverage i would have switched)..but the only band missing is 66 which T-Mobile is planning to roll out, but it would be ages for that to be widely deployed, and by that time you can get Mi Note 3 ..

As far as I am concerned, I would stay away from this phone
It's really nice... on paper !
But real life looks quite different.
First, despite having cloase specs to the Xiaomi mi5s Plus, I could compare them both side by side : in EVERY aspect, the mi Note 2 is beaten by it's Xiaomi sibbling.
Second, the display is simply a catastrophy... unless you really like blueish displays and ****ty view angles. It's AMOLED. The Xiaomi mi5s Plus which has IPS doesn't suffer from that.
Third, the GPS is lazy, always showing you 10 meters behind where you really are. Here again, the mi5s Plus is much more accurate !
It might be that I have got a defective device. But at least about the display, I had the exact same symptoms on the OP3 I got the very first day it was released
SO I guess : AMOLED might offer really random performance

My husband bought us mi note 2's. We have owned them for 4 months. I personally have no plans on buying another u.s. marketed cell phone. I highly recommend the mi note 2. I have the 128GB storage phone.

Just to give my experience so people seeing this don't immediately think this phone is awful... I've had mine (Global 6GB/128GB) for about a week and it's been great. Last phone was a Nexus 6P but I'm liking this much more. The display isn't as high resolution as the 6P but that is only really noticeable when reading small text. I don't have any issue with the display being "blueish" or poor viewing angles. GPS is also fine for me so I'm wondering if you did get a defective unit.
Get the phone you won't be disappointed. I have had the global edition for a couple of months and it poops on anything else .. Side by side with the Samsung S8 and this phone looks pretty much the same. It is not as fast as an S8, but then costs half as much, and it has loads more memory, dual SIMs, is still one of the fastest phones out there, and the display is plenty good enough. Maybe not the phone you should get if you find blowing ROMs exciting but if you want a phone that works really well out of the box this is it. The benchmarks appear to be better for the international edition so get that one, with 128gb. Remember that Xiaomi make more phones than Apple so you can bet it is going to be a solid product.
If the poster above actually owned the phone they would be competent enough to flip into the settings and adjust the screen settings to warm if they want a warmer looking screen. You can also set the screen to remove blue light at night if you want that sort of thing.
I am running dual SIMs with no issues internationally.. 4g is fast. The front end is Miui which is a bit quirky but has a bunch of good features built in.. And, having a 4000ma battery you can get a couple of days use out of the phone between charge on light use. The GPS is really good, helped by the fact that most of the phone is glass. So you get a fix real fast. Best phone I have ever owned for sat nav in a car. The GPS doesn't suck the battery dry either.
Camera is good, not brilliant but it's better than many Chinese phones. I am comparing to a DSLR which costs twice as much as the phone so probably a bit unfair! Double the resolution of the S8 phone...
This isn't a hacker phone.. It is a good phone that just works and has an interesting launcher with good features to help you control your privacy and battery use.. Usually the things you need to root your phone for.. With this phone you don't need to root to do that, and that is really handy. I do actually own this phone so feel free to ask questions

I've had mine for going into three months now. I'm in the US using T-Mobile and I've had only one issue with it so far (I have a few issues taking calls on a wired headphones). Overall, really satisfied with it.

I just got mine and going to start using it. Initial impressions, it's a BEAUTY. The black one is a SEXY monolith. Very minimal in curves and subtle in design. Nothing jazzy. The bad part - Only the screen/display. Yes the resolution is a little less. But honestly, you wouldn't even notice it. 6GIGs OF RAM DUDEE! What else do you need? And 128 is more than enough. For that price, you will usually compromise on something or the other with other phones, not this one.
I currently own an S6 Edge+ and the battery has degraded heavily so I am currently looking for a new phone and this one looks very promising, but will it get Android Oreo?

I just love that phone.
I have this phone for month now and it great, fast, stable, no heating, great battery life. After all I think its worth baying this phone.
I confirm I got this phone few days ago from Gearbest, paid it 213€ with shipment included. I will now request bootloader unlocking so I can add root. I am planning to keep stock MIUI, really hoping it's going to get MIUI 9 before christmas.

Actually , it is . Mi Note 2 has already Miui 9 in nightly realease state for the global rom .
