anyone have issues activating? - Atrix 4G General

I used the activation link in the email i received, submitted everything, but the phone doesn't seem to be able to access a data network. I have signal, and it says AT&T in the upper left, but when it tries to setup motoblur, it can't get a cell network.
at work, so no wifi here. When i put the SIM in my old Aria i have phone service, but no data. Really annoyed. Anyone else have this issue?

::sigh::
so when you activate, you can't use the link that was emailed to you at pre-order, you actually have to call them. When i did it online there was no way to agree to terms and services, so they pulled my data plan, as in gone, had none. Now i have a case in to get the unlimited one back while i'm temporarliy on the 2 gig plan. Thanks AT&T. Thanks.

I had issues but after my second call to customer service, I got someone that was able to fix it.
I have my unlimited plan still at its original rate.

What AT&T changes for upgrade apart from phone cost (Like upgrade fee, activation fee, etc). Can we get these waived ?

I had a similar problem on Backflip, turn off wifi.

I activated it at att store, pretty fast!

I had an unlimited plan on my iPhone 3G. The only fee I had to pay was the upgrade fee (18$) and the phone ($199). Outside of that, nothing else.
It took some doing to get the unlimited plan transferred and the phone at that price. I have made probably 5 calls to AT&T so far (a few hours worth).
I have a feeling when I get my first bill after the transfer, I am going to have to call them again.

wifi was off. AT&T literally wiped out any data plan from my account. meaning i didn't have one, at all. I have a ticket in to put my unlimited one back on, but have to wait for them to do it.

Heads Up (Canadian) Telus Subscribers

Before our American friends feel compelled to post how the Sprint SERO plan is all this and all that, here is a link to the SERO page. Yeah, we know all about it.
Some of you may or may not be aware, but Bell has introduced a 7$ unlimited data plan. For the longest time I have been nagging Telus to get with the times concerning data going all the way up to the Head Office. Now that Bell has beat them to it, they are suddenly in a negotiating mood. Here is what a simple phone call to customer service got me for 34$ a month:
- Unlimited Data (no restrictions, tethering or otherwise)
- Free incoming calls US & Canada
- 250 anytime minutes
- 100 text messages
- Voicemail 25
- Caller ID
If Rogers can get into the 21st Century, I will have to remove my signature

:| Wow... I thought the $15 unlimited IM and Email plan was pretty good. How long have you been a customer and are you on a contract?
Thanks for the heasup!
I've been with Telus for 3 years and not on a contract, but it makes no difference. The CSR told me the Canadian wireless landscape is undergoing major changes and Telus wants to make sure all their customers take advantage of it. If you've got a PDA phone, give them a call
hey borealcool, just out of curiosity, what exactly did you say to them that convinced them to set you up with such a sweet package? And who did you talk to? I called them today (611) asking if there was anything that could be done but got nothing...i'm still stuck with the crappy $25 for 4MB plan...any help would be great. thanks
I called with the firm intention of moving to Bell saying they have an unlimited data package for 7$. The lady transfered me to another department (customer retentions?) where another lady picked up. She told me Bell's offer came with built-in restrictions and I said what, tethering? She said yes at which point I said that's not a problem, I've got friends on the Internet who can help me hack that. She said I know
Anyways to make a long story short she told me the Canadian wireless landscape is changing with deregulation, competitive prices etc. and asked what would satisfy my needs. I told her about Sprint's SERO packages (she knew about that too) and after looking at my calling pattern she said I never went over 250 outgoing minutes and 100 text messages. I said that would be fine along with unlimited data and she set me up
The plan I got is not advertised, but I think 2008 will see major announcements from wireless providers and why not? Bell, Rogers and Telus are all residential ISPs offering unmetered data and extending it to their wireless packages simply makes sense. I my case, I use data for communications and surfing the web which hardly consumes bandwidth. The teenager next door might download gigabytes of MP3s, but my low consumption balances it out and they know this.
this $7 unlimited data plan is a farse. its false advertising. the touch and all other windows mobile phones are data devices. the plan is unlimited mobile browser. i checked and thought i wasnt being billed for data... the only limitation to the plan being tethering, which i wasnt doing. long story short after a weekend of data use i had racked up $19,000 in data charges. (not a typo). check my thread for full story details.

Following borealcool's post, I called Telus and see what it's all about. I was very straight forward with the representatives telling them I read on a forum about the unlimited offer. The 2nd rep I talked to was fully aware of it and explained it was intended for new subscribers and renewals (something of that nature). But still, they kindly gave me the plan eventhough I've been with Telus for just few months. So I can confirm that they do have an unadvertised deal where for 15$/month, you get unlimited Web. But it doesn't apply to tethering as borealcool stated.
Finally!!! I now have unlimited Web from my phone so I don't have to worry about busting my limit! Thanks borealcool for the tip!
Good on you lugom,
As stated above, what I got is not an advertised plan. It's Canadian providers waking up to the fact their ridiculous price gouging can no longer be sustained. It's extremely surprising that Bell set the ball rolling, but I think the Conservative government also had something to do with it by announcing their intention to deregulate the market. The last thing providers want is American competition!
EDIT: Btw, what you said about not having to worry about busting your limit is DEAD ON. I'm not a heavy data user, but I've got enough stress in my life without having to worry about my cell phone's data consumption!
Hey guys,
Just an update...Tried again today and had no luck. The CSR told me that they couldn't do anything about my plan because the $15 unlimited email and im is only available to the touch and two other phones that aren't the p4000. He also said that it's only available to new clients with new activations.
I'm guessing they're like this because:
-I'm only 7 months into my 3 year contract
-I can't prove that other people with a p4000 have the unlimited data plan
-I'm completely missing something...
I know a guy on howardforums mentioned that while talking to the CSR he gave them a phone number of another guy that had a p4000 with the unlimited data plan and they were able to give him the same plan...

They are hardballing you and you have two choices:
1. Live with what you have.
2. Hardball back.
If option #2 is in your blood, here's what you do but be prepared to terminate your contract at the cost of 580$ (20$ per month of remaining contract). In any case it will cost more than that in overages so you don't have much to lose. Your P4000 should fetch a minimum of 200$ on eBay. We have number portability in Canada now so if keeping your number is important that's not a problem either...
Rule #1: Remain courteous, patient and polite. CSRs have no gripe against you and most want to help. Call them saying you want to terminate your contract to go with Bell's unlimited data plan. The CSR will transfer you to another, rinse & repeat. The next CSR will either offer unlimited data or, if s/he knows what they are doing, will suggest you sign up with Bell first to transfer your number without interruption of service.
Good luck!
I got the plan!!!!! It took me three days and about 8 reps but finally the last one said yes. Basically what they gave me was the talk to me 30 plan as well as the $15 unlimited messaging and email that now includes data (the data part is unadvertised). I am happy now.
My story called the other day and was flat out told "no". Asked for a supervisor and they said one would call me back.No call from a supervisor yesterday so I called first thing this morning went straight to account cancellations and told Aneshia that I want to cancel my account and get the Bell Touch (BTW I don't even have Bell in my area lol), and that a supervisor was supposed to call me back and never did. She went ahead and offered to look into getting the $15 unlimited plan added and came back after about 2 minutes and said that she would apply it and that I had to change my voice plan becuase my contract says I must spend a minimum of $45/ month. So I got the talk to me $30 plan which inlcludes more than what I get with the base Talk and Email for $45. Thanks "borealcool" for paving the way!

I get the feeling they weren't ready for Bell's announcement, after all Bell & Rogers were 20 times more expensive than Telus for data. Watching Telus announcements in 2008 should prove interesting

Yeah she did mention one of the reasons they will give it to me is that they are pretty sure they will be expanding the deal to other devices in the future.
well boys,
i have called Bell about 5 times trying to get them to give me something i can be happy with.
right now i'm paying $100 for my data plan which includes 1gb. that's wayyyyy too much and i told them about the Telus $15 plan. they refused me and i terminated my contract with them as of next month. so anyone that wants to buy a Bell 6800 leave me a msg.
screw Bell to Hell!! and i was a loyal customer for 5 years!

You don't have to. If you subscribe with another carrier before the end of your contract with Bell, you can ask the new carrier to carry you current phone number with them. It's almost instantaneous. That's a law in Canada now. That's what I did when I went from Fido to Telus this summer. And, if data is really a must have for you, you can always go with Telus and ask for the 15$ unlimited data plan explaining your coming from competition (and still retain your number.) If they say they can only give the plan if you choose the Touch (and if you don't want this device), insist on the fact that you know peoples that owns P4000 and got this very plan with their current device. I know I do, as many others.

cool thanks. is there anyway i could use my Bell 6800 on the Telus network?
Illimited data plan still going on?
Hi,
6 months later, do anyone of you still have the 15$ illimited data plan? I've called Telus and they tell me there's no illimited data with this plan...8$/Mb!!!???
Thanks for your help
JF
Anyone could reply so I can call back Telus...please...
I asked Telus Mobility to add it to my existing contract Dec 2007 with my PPC-6700(Apache), Feb 2008 I've moved to a PPC-6800/P4000(Titian), contract will end Apr 2009.
The bill still states "Unlt'd Personal Email & IM 15", I'm using about a 100megs of data and about 10megs tether data a month.
Yes, I'm still on the $15 ulimited data plan and it's F$%^ amazing, I never thought I would use that much data but when its unlimited.
The deal started in July 2007 if you had a $45 voice plan, about 4 years of existing service they could add the $15 unlimited data any phone other than Blackberry's. Oct 2007 to counter Bell's offer the voice requirement drop to $30 and still no Blackberry.
In late March 2008 co-work recently tried to sign up for the plan but no go the offer expired in Feb 2008 and he's been a 11 year customer of Telus. This is the standard offer now http://www.telusmobility.com/bc/plans/pcs/email_all.shtml
The only thing to do is drop everything and move to Bell for the HTC Touch and $7 data or wait for the iPhone to start some more competition.
I still would like the $7 from Bell Mobility but it's locked to the HTC Touch and non-pda phone. I've asked Bell if I purchased the HTC Touch with $7 data could I switch to another phone while retaining the data. NO NO NO they will charge you standard data rates.
GOOD LUCK
Thanks for your info. I can't find that 7$ data plan you're talking about on Bell's website though. The cheapest plan I see is 15$/month and its not illimited: 2 Mo/month!!! Are you in Canada??
I just want the right info before I call back Telus...
Thanks again.

Unlocked TP on AT&T: data plan?

Was hoping to hear from anyone with an unlocked Treo Pro on AT&T, and if they are using the data unlimited (MediaNet), or PDA personal plan?
I previously was using a Treo 650 and now that I'm using my TP, AT&T still thinks I'm using my 650 (looking at the AT&T online my account site). I never had a data plan on the 650, but I can't really justify spending for the PDA plan. Is anyone with a TP using the data unlimited plan? Since my phone shows up as my 650, am I not be able to add data unlimited to my phone?
And lastly, has anyone been "caught" with the wrong plan, and what does AT&T do? Automatically switch you to the correct plan, or charge you their per KB rate?
If you have a dumbphone you can easily call up and tell them you changed phones and want the cheaper MEdia Net plan, then put your SIM back in your TP.
You can try calling them and giving them the IMEI to your unlocked TP and they should be able to do it since it won't be in their system.
You do not need the PDA plan for an unlocked phone since its not in their system.
The dumbphone trick usually works too, and even if you go back to an AT&T PDA you can keep the MEdia Net plan, but one day you may get caught.
Aggresive AT&T
I was all excited when I got my brand new Palm Treo Pro unlocked from Dell this week. I just took my SIM card (AT&T 450m Plan W/O data) from my old phone and put it in the new phone. Everything’s fine. My new phone is good, easy to use. So I went to Palm website yesterday night and I “registered” my phone by giving my phone number and phone’s serial number. I also mentioned that my provider is AT&T. Big mistake. If you are reading this, don’t ever say who your provider is.
Today morning, I get two SMS’s from AT&T saying “Did you know your Smartphone requires a data plan ? For convenience we have added a minimum plan to your phone” WTF….
So I called up AT&T and checked what the hell is going on…they responded saying it’s a requirement that all smart phones “should” have a data plan. I reminded that I was no longer under contract nor did I bought the phone from a AT&T store at a discount with a contract. I paid full price for that phone that I bought from Dell.
I also told them that if they don’t remove the data plan ($30 bucks a month), I will go elsewhere. After 10 mins of trying to make her understand that it’s an unlocked phone, she finally washed her hands off by saying she will transfer me to “another” department which will “rectify” my situation. Then I got another lady on the phone who started off saying “Do you want to cancel your account ?” Another 10 mins of explaining and finally she said she will use the “grandfather” clause to pull out the data plan from my account.
All in all, wasted around 40 mins to get the data plan off my bill.
It is very wrong of AT&T to push plans which customers don’t need. If you are being pushed around by AT&T, fight back !!!
AT&T's evil policy
I had the same experience. I bought unlocked TP from Dell 3 days ago. Very next day morning after I swapped the SIM into TP, I received SMS saying "data plan is required for your smartphone" (I never registered AT&T as a service provider any where)
I called AT&T and asked them to remove $30 plan as I swapped SIM back into my old non-pda phone.
I did research on this issue, and found a website (can't post link here as I am considered new user and xda website won't allow me to post this message, but if you care, google for cingular selfcare and first link would get you there)
I can put my number, and it will tell me what device I have. I put SIM into TP, and it tells that I have TP!!
So, some how, my IMEI is recognized to AT&T database even if I had purchased this phone unlocked from Dell.
Now, I am left with 2 options
1. return TP back to Dell
2. Pay $30/month if I want to use it with AT&T
I want to use TP, but AT&T's evil policy would not let me. They should not have a say in what data plan I need with my phone when they never subsidized the phone for me. That is unfair.
TP on AT&T
I have unlocked TP on AT&T, got it from dell last year and I wasn't required to put a pda data plan on the phone. I do have the old media net plan and so it comes with unlimited data, but it is cheaper than the $30 plan and comes with over 1000 sms.
t-mobile?
various people on XDA talking about having switched to T-mobile for this very reason. with t-mobile it's unlimited data (includes tethering, they tell me) for $25 a month, or no data at all. They don't do the "$2/meg" garbage that ATT does. The data can be "on" or "off" which is the decent way to do it.
you just need to unlock your phone. Edge will work on t-mobile, although 3G will not.
My TP experience
I know it's an older thread but figured would post my experience.
Been with AT&T for 6 years. First phone I got from them was an MPx220. Put the MediaNet plan on it (unlimited data, 1500 sms, 200 mms) for $19.99. I switched phones over the years going from iPAQ, i-Mate, HTC, Palm, etc. All along the way, never got any message about needing a smartphone data plan.
Then I brought an unlocked iPhone for my wife and stuck my SIM in there to set it up (it was a gift). Set it up for her, pulled my SIM out and back in my Treo Pro. The next morning I had two txts from AT&T saying my iPhone requried a data plan and it has been added for me. I had been swapping SIM cards for years and this 15 minutes with the iPhone changed my entire account.
I called and said I didn't have an iPhone and need my account restored back to the MediaNet. Well since it was an old feature, they couldn't add it back for me and opened a case with the Resolutions department. In the meantime, they put me on the $15 sms plan and the $15 unlimited data for dumphones and gave me a $25 credit until the issue was resolved.
Well while I was on the dump phone plan I got two more sms stating my smartphone required a data plan and one had been added. Now I was real concern because they never knew said anything about a smartphone before.
Finally the resolution team called and said they couldn't add the package because I was on the smartphone and should have never had the plan on the smartphone. So I put my SIM back in the MPx220 and waiting for them to add the feature again. I am concerned that once I do switch SIMs again it will send me another SMS at which time I'll be heading for another provider. But for 6 years I never had a problem into that damn iPhone.

Interested in getting Vibrant, but not eligible for upgrade, so was wondering........

Right now I really want the vibrant, but i'm not eligible for full upgrade from tmobile so i can't get the phone for 100 from costco where its on sale. Since my brother whose in a family plan with my parents is eligible, he could get me the phone since he says he's fine with his old sidekick.
So would it be as simple as him ordering the phone, giving it to me, and myself putting the sim card in, and using it right away? Also, I understand he has to get the data plan since it's required, but could he technically call tomobile to take it off and say he lost it? Because he's fine with his old sidekick and not wanting a data plan added on his bill. I would appreciate any responses thankyou.
Yes that should work fine. They may require you to add a data plan to your line though.
as for using a different line for upgrading the phone on another line, that is fine - I do this all the time (my company has over 30 lines, and most employees are still on the same phone they got in 2002)
the data plan will be an issue - technically, the price of the phone is subsidized by the data plan, so he would not be able to just cancel the data plan. if that were possible, tmobile would lose money, and that is a big NO-NO
But, I've heard from different people, that if you did report the phone lost, they would take the data plan off. Or that could go to your online t-mobile account and change what phone you have, like if you change that you have a "dumbphone". Can anyone else confirm this?
I was able to cancel the data plan here is how: Once you buy the phone and the data plan is active login at the t-mobile website and change the phone to another phone. On the left click on the line you just bought the phone on, then under the picture of the phone you just bought click on "not your phone/device" then choose a cheapo phone from the list (one that does not require an internet plan). Now you should be able to go under that accounts plan and cancel the internet. If this does not work then you would have to start begging tmobile to remove it (just explain to them the real situation and that you will add the plan to your line) usually if you have been a long time well paying customer they will help you.
Just have your brother, or whomever's name under the account, call in and ask to remove the Android data plan and put back the Sidekick plan. Of course, your brother's sim card needs to be in the sidekick at the time you request the change. If they ask for a reason, just say "I didn't like it, so I gave it to my brother." That's it. Keep it simple.
Cool, appreciate all the responses guys. I don't think my brother has the Sidekick plan, he just has the regular family plan line with no data or anything.
Okay, it's been about 2 weeks, and so I decided to call about the phone and switching the data plan. However, T-mobile would not allow my brother to switch his data plan over to my account. They won't allow him to get rid of the data charge on his account period. The only option the rep gave me was to downgrade to a sidekick plan for his account which basically cost the samee anyways. Anyone know what I should do now?
That will work, but like others said they will require you to have that data plan. So your brother will be stuck with his sidekick data plan and the data plan for the Vibrant. Unlike other phones I do not think he can use the Android data plan with his Sidekick. I have used my G1 plan with the Mytouch 3g, Cliq, HD2, and now my Vibrant. As you can see I used it with a non-adroid device (HD2) and it worked fine, but I think sidekicks are in a whole different league.
Just wait it out. How much longer is your contract. Also go to walmart instead of costco. If you go anywhere else you will get taxed on the full price of the phone when walmart only tax the cost shown. For example walmart taxes on 98.99. Whereas everyone else will tax 500.00.

Talk to a T-mo representative in store and ask them if you have a equipment credit line. I'm not eligible for upgrade until Nov but I have like $300 ECL. So I still got the phone at the same price of an upgrade.
Appreciate the responses guys, but right now I have the phone and it's great and everything. I even got the data plan myself. But what im trying to figure out is how to take the data plan completely off my brothers account since he technically doesnt own the phone anymore and having the plan would be useless.
I've talked to 3 different reps and each refused to take his plan off. One rep recommended to go to the store and buy a cheap "dumbphone" for like 50 bucks which takes his data plan off. It seems like my only option now and would you guys recommend that?
Well the terms are that you signed into a 2yr contract knowing there is a data plan requirement for 2 years. And now you want help getting it off? I don't think it would be appropriate to ask that here.

[Q] Just upgraded and got 4G unlimited?

Hi, I just upgraded my N97 to the G2 and got the HD7 free on black Friday.
I didn't have a data plan before, but when I look up my service it says I have 4g unlimited? I can't seem to find the service fee for it either.
I don't want to get a surprise at the end of the month and be hit with a $30 data plan.
Should I be worried?
The Rep told me the upgrade is only for the phone and does not affect the plan.
If I did get free 4G service then WOOT!
highly doubt it. when you upgrade, they change your data rate plan to the required one for your device. you're most likely going to get charged for it
thanks,
My brother got the HD7 and he had the 5.99 tmobile web plan, does this mean he lost his tmobile web plan forever? We he don't plan on keeping the phone and plans to go back to his Milestone.
For tmobile I know that if you upgrade a phone to a "data service required" model, YOU WILL NOT NEED A DATA SERVICE TO USE IT. They pull that bs to get more money out of you on the upgrade offer. All you need is a sim card for the phones designated provider. I know this because I handle the phones in the family plan for my family and have seen nearly every situation and outcome. Every 2 years each of us has a phone we get an upgrade for that individual line. We do not take upgrades always in turn and in the past have bought these "data plan required" phones off craigslist or ebay. They still work. If you use the data without a plan you will get charged out the ass. Luckily you can restrict yourself from doing that just incase you can't remember not to. You will also not lose the web features that are registered to your sim card. If you have the edge package (the cheaper one) and stick your sim in another phone, that phone now becomes "edge" enabled. Same goes for 3G package unless you put it in a HSPA compatible phone, then you will have the HSPA capabilities. Kinda nice that they aren't charging a jacked up fee for their new data service, but my connection locally sucks for it anyways so go figure.
One other rule about tmobile that I like is that they grandfather you on certain things. For example, I pay a flat $55 monthly for unlimited minutes/texts/data and they no longer have this plan available but since I've had it for the last few years, I am an exception to any plans they have now and that makes me a happier camper.
Thanks
so should I call the rep at the store back and tell him to remove the 4g unlimited?
I never had a data plan before the update, but my bro had the 5.99 plan.
or should i switch to a dumb phone and remove it myself?
thanks
You will NOT be able to keep the phone if you want to cancel the data plan. Tmobile requires the data plan as a part of the deal on the upgrade. I have a hard time believing this wasn't made abundantly clear to you before you upgraded.

That's what I heard, but I kept asking the Rep, Will the upgrade add or change anything to my current, plan and he kept saying no. And he assured me that the upgrade is only for the phone. He told me the Data plan is only for new subscribers.

Ray as much as I would like to say woohooo for you, it is a well know problem with T-Mo Reps...They hay no clue what they are talking about! I would check your online account in the next few days, but you may not see it until your new billing cycle. These folks really suck at getting their fact straight!
Anyway, i hope that ou do get what you wanted, and keep us posted on the long term outcome.!
I find that no one ever knows what they are doing. I upgraded to the G2 and was very happy until the website said that another data plan was added to our contract for 30 a month. I've had a data plan for quite a while and it was 25 a month. When we called Tmo, they said I had to have that data plan on top of my old one to keep the phone. They were obviously mistaken but refused to do any of the leg work to get it fixed. I had to make calls to Best Buy and Tmo many times to make sure that it was fixed. Sorry for the rant, I just find it hard to believe that anyone has gone through this process smoothly when it has been a huge pain in the ass every time I have upgraded a phone.
I checked online and i saw the $30 data plan. I knew it wasn't going to be free, but oh well.
Do you guys know if i could change it to the $15 data plan?
thanks
I would recomend to anyone getting phones on contract.... buy the phone outright and all the plans become cheaper. Once gou have a contract you loose all your bargining chips. If i have a problem with my service i can call them up and say fix this or i cancel. They will quickly transfer me to a level whatever rep that has the power to change anything oon my plan to keep me happy. Just an fyi if you dont have the cash to buy the phone tmo has a plan that you pay them 20 a month till it paid off no interest. Even going that route monthly rate is still less then being on contract.

Reps will generally tell you whatever they can to make a sale. The rep outright lied to you when he said it wouldn't require a data plan.you should've asked for it in writing.
All subsidized smartphones require a compatible data plan (except the Nokia Nuron) for the life of the contract.
He didn't say I didn't need data, he just said he wouldn't add or change anything. He just never mentioned I will need a data plan.
looks like my bro won't be getting his 5.99 tzone plan back.
Does forcing us to get a data plan go under that net neutrality thing?

Well, I guess he didn't really lie then... the computer did it automatically.
Seriously though, he probably assumed you already had a data plan due to having an N97 smartphone.

Not a chance. It's a term stipulated by the contract in order for you to get the discounted price. All spelled out in the terms and conditions paper you sign.
On the G2, you can just use the "My Account" app, "Plan and Services" tab - it will show you up to the minute info regarding your plan, details, and monthly costs. Nothing is free, but TMo is as close as you can get in the US.
What happen is for some reason when upgrading 2 lines only the first one gets the "unlimited 4g" I ran into this problem a few days ago. The system doesn't automatically add the web on the second device(the "free" one) So the customer leaves the store with out the internet of the second device. Now unless he went into your account and changed the tzone package then you should be fine. But in the case that he did just call customer care and have them put the old feature on. They will be reluctant to do so and say that it doesnt exist anymore but they keep all of the plans in the system. Reps just dont like to go into the system and find the package. Hope this helps.

verizon prepaid on xoom 3g

I have a 3g Xoom that I never activated (just use Wifi). I'm moving next month and think it would be useful to have the xoom with me when I go to find a house and do all that other stuff that you need internet for. I think what I'll need it for is mostly just craigslist, google maps, and email.
Does anyone have any experience using their xoom with a prepaid verizon data plan, or some other plan that will not require a contract? Any help would be appreciated.
EDIT: So, called both Verizon and Best Buy (that's where this Xoom was purchased). The Verizon rep didn't know what a "zoom" is and said I could sign up for a 1 or 2 year plan. She also couldn't find my MEID# in their system. The Best Buy person wanted to help but didn't get that I only want 1 or 2 months. He also suggested I set it up with AT&T. How do these people feed themselves?
Okay, go in to a Verizon store with your Xoom in hand, tell them you want a Month to Month plan, I forget there exact term for it, but they should understand. Its not pre-paided, Verizon only offers pre-paided data with smartphones (odd? I think so too) its month to month because you aren't on contract but pay a monthly bill that you can cancel at anytime without consiquence , except that there is a 15$ re-activation fee you have to pay when you turn it back on. There reason behind this is that they assign your Xoom a phone number to be able to link it to their network (odd? I know). So basically you want a month to month plan, but you must go into a verizon store to do this, try to pick a bigger one rather than a smaller local one, so the people aren't doing this for their first time. And just a note, stay in the store after its activated and get them to call customer service so they can issue you a password to sign into their website. In order to sign into their website the first time you need to use your new phone number, and have them text you an initial password. Well since Xooms aren't phones and don't receive text messages on the number Verizon assigns you, you won't get the text message and there for won't be able to get your password to sign in. If the Verizon rep calls the customer service on the phone, they can get them to issue a temporary password to sign you in on spot with your Xoom like they did for me, if you don't do it this way, and try to do it thru the website or customer service without a Verizon Rep calling for you, you will be forced to wait for them to mail you the temporary password. Which some have reported long wait times in this forum after the initial launch. And you'll want to be able to sign in to their site to be able to track your data consumption.

OHHHHH and I forgot the most important part!!!!!!
THEY WILL RUN A CREDIT CHECK AND POSSIBLY MAKE YOU PAY A SECURITY DEPOSIT OF UP TO 400 USD IF YOU HAVE BAD CREDIT.(odd? I know)
Even though your not signing a contract, your not signing up for pre payed, so they will run the credit check.
If your not sure just go try, my girlfriends credit isn't great but she didn't have to pay anything to put data on my xoom. They tried to charge me $400, but that's because me and my dad have the same name, and he screwed my credit over before I even turned 18.

Thanks Tommy!
Do you use wireless tethering with your service? Is there a restriction on tethering to a laptop? How much data do I need (it will be for email, craigslist, GPS, google chat, light web)?
I appreciate your help!
I pm'd you. I work for VZW and can hook it up easy. Plans are $20 for 1gb, $35 for 3gb, $50 for 5gb. You could probably get by on the 3gb plan and can always bump it up. The tethering is unlimited and just goes against the allowance.

Not understanding how tethering is "unlimited" if it is charged against a plan. For example, if I had a 1gb plan, tethered and used 1.2 gb, won't I get charged for going over?

The prepaid plan is not available for the Xoom. After receiving my 4G upgrade, I call Verizon and was transferred 3 times while the different departments tried to figure everything out. Basically, Verizon's website shows that Tablets have a prepaid plan, but they don't specify what tablets are supported. Based on their website, all tablets are supported, but that isn't the case. They told me that 4G plans aren't supported for prepay. I was really looking forward to activating my Xoom, but I only wanted prepaid since it costs the same as the month-to-month minus any activation, overages, and reconnect fees.
I was planning on only having my service active when I needed it for work. If I choose the month-to-month plan, I will have to pay an activation fee every time I need to reactivate it. I really hope they update their website to reflect this information as I was very disappointed to learn this information over the phone. They tried to sell me a mobile hotspot, but I was not interested as I already tether my Xoom to my Sprint 4G phone.
Im on their early $20 1gb plan, that I know of I'm not on contract but I didn't want to pay the Sept bill cuz of the 4lte update so I didnt pay and thought they just cut it off till you pay for the next month but I got charged that month and a late fee.

I'm not on Verizon, but I do know that they have an option where you can "suspend" your account for a period of time where you don't have to pay.

You can suspend for up to 90 days at a time. Just need to make sure to go online or call in to re-suspend it afterwards if you want it suspended longer (technically you can do that the same day and have it suspended as long as you want).
VZW did, however, just start offering actual prepaid data on tablets literally a few days ago. Prices are $20 = 1GB, $30 = 3GB, $50 = 5GB, and $80 = 10GB and $35 activation.
IMHO the postpaid plans are a much better way to go because you can turn it on and off whenever and prorate your data usage and only have to pay an activation once. With prepaid the account will go inactive after a certain period of time and you will have to pay another activation fee to reconnect it. Only downside to postpaid is the credit check.

Odd, but I've been on the 5GB plan since new in May. I never use that much, so just went to the Verizon Wireless web site. I'm on a post-paid plan and was only presented with these options:
2GB for $30, 5GB for $50 and 10GB for $80. It's odd that this doesn't seem to reflect what others are seeing, so I'll go into the store at some point.

I know that you work for Verizon and hoped that you could clear some things up about Xoom prepaid plans. You state that there is an activation fee with prepaid data on tablets, but the this page states the following under "Prepaid Mobile Broadband/Tablets":
No activation or reconnection fees, and no overage charges.

So is there or isn't there an activation fee?
Are you familiar with or know much about the new Xoom system update (HLK75F) that enables a prepaid 4g option on the Xoom? See this thread and the attached pdf.
I already applied the HLK75F update, but when I go to "Settings/Wireless & networks/Mobile Networks/Verizon data service", it takes me to a "Mobile Broadband quick access" page in the browser. The page states:
Please try again or contact us to complete your order. Sorry! We are unable to complete your order online at this time. Please try again later or contact customer service at 800-786-8419 (18079782).

Is this error because I don't have a Verizon account and my Xoom isn't registered with the network? Fyi, I did have the LTE upgrade performed and my sim card is installed.
Is this something that you could assist me with? I want to have the option of using prepaid data on the Xoom without any contract, credit check, or activation fees. Thanks.
I to would like this without the pathetic credit check
