[q] wired tether. - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

I've done tons of searching for solutions to my internet connectivity problems in my house.
First off, I don't have a job; so therefore there is no money coming in so I can make this simple and easy. Do not tell me to buy a wifi adapter or something like that.
I know that the HD2 with the bone stock hd2 rom from T-Mobile has the WMWiFiRouter app that allows you to share a WIFI CONNECTION (NOT 3G/EDGE) via usb to a device (computer, xbox, etc).
Well, now HD2 has the droid option and I upgraded. Running android via root, not SD.
I need to know if there is any app, or anything out there that will let me use my WIFI CONNECTION FROM MY PHONE, AND TETHER IT VIA USB TO A DEVICE. I do not have 3G/EDGE connectivity, so thats not a path we can go down. I want to connect to the wifi in my house, and share that connection from my phone to a device via USB. thanks.

vogue and connecting to internet through bluetooth?

im new to any form of htc or palm(any windows based phone). my blackberry i could do a bunch of stuff without having internet through various simulators and whatnot. i was interested in getting the touch because i believed it had wifi, but know i realized that it doesnt(still havent purchased it.)
so my questions are
will the phone be able to receive a internet signal through bluetooth? as in i connect my phone to my macbook, i should receive a connection.
if i connect it to the computer via usb will i be able to download applications just like if i had the internet plan?? i really do not need the phone to be able to have internet at all times, just for downloading apps. i mainly use smartphones for there planning and scheduling abilities.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
just some side info, switching from sprint is not an option, nor is getting a information plan, as im a broke college kid.
Not sure about the bluetooth, it should be possible though.
As for the USB yes, infact if you are downloading applications do this over your regular internet if you don't have unlimited wireless internet from your provider. Applications can be quite big and you can hit your download limit very easily this way.
thanks a bunch, i went and checked the phone out today and i liked it a bunch. once again, and to not start another new thread thats probably answered somewhere, is it possible to send ringtones to the phone through usb?

HTC announced the Touch 3g and Touch HD which look very similar to the Vogue. I'm not sure when these devices will be released but they have the features you seem to be looking for (WiFi). If you wait a little bit, you may, or may not be happier with the 3g or HD.
Just some information in case you never heard of these devices yet.
http://www.htc.com/www/default.aspx
EDIT: I am not sure about connecting a vogue to a mac, as it requires activesync to connect which is a Microsoft product. Most newer macs allow you to run windows xp, so it should be no problem. Also, when the phone is connected via USB, it will not use your regular DSL/Cable connection to access the internet. You will need to download the applications on your computer first, then transfer to the phone via activesync.
There's also the Mogul which is out now that has built in wifi. Prices are low and should be dropping as newer phones come out. Good for a broke college student.

Actually the phone can connect to the Internet via desktop DSL/Cable when they are USB linked.... but you'd never do that just to get apps on you phone. It's really only useful for syncing email to your phone when you don't have a data plan for the the phone.
Sprint HTC Touch internet thru bluetooth
So has anyone been able to figure out how to connect to the internet thru bluetooth to your PC/MAC? For example: If you are in an area that doesn't have cell coverage at all (Sprint or roaming) if you have an internet connection on your PC/MAC (DSL, Cable, etc.) can you connect to the computer thru bluetooth and access the internet on the Touch? It would be great for VOIP like Skype(out).
So I am not asking how to connect your computer to the internet thru your phone. Just the opposite, actually. Specifically asking for MAC.

Yeah, I read too quickly and missed the BT requirement.
I tether using bluetooth with my mac book, you can use Internet connection sharing or pda net, and use the btpan feature.

[Q] Android phones can't use reverse tethering?

I'm used to surf and download to my windows phone through bluetooth using the internet on my computer. I't can't be done with my new android phone?
I dont see why Android would want to waste their time with such inferior methods. 3G is faster than bluetooth. But WiFi is the option to choose.
I need this feature too.
I think the OP wants his laptop as the access point....not his phone (tethering). This can be done with WinMo phones. It is useful in places where there is no free WiFi....like in my workplace we only use LAN with our laptops. Whenever I connect my Desire to my laptop via USB or BT, I hope I could then update weather and download and install apps on my HTC Desire using my laptop's internet connection.
The only way to do it without some root bluetooth hacking would be broadcasting wifi from your laptop. Mac OS has this built-in in the sharing preference pane, Windows can do it but there are a few more steps. Nothing hard.
Thierry Parent has put up a working solution here ...

Worked great for me !
Cheers,
Vikram.
Im running sense 3.0 3d ..its got options to do that once u plug in a USB cable

Droid Wireless Tethering
Google a program called gingersnap. it works. It gives super user rights. Be carefull your data usage will be high. Make sure you have unlimited data. you will also need to download a wifi tether program

Can't tether!

Just that. Wifi or USB tether doesn't function. The phone says it's connected, but the laptop says no network connection.
There any replacement apps that might help? I flashed the latest radio and that fixed a GPS problem I was having, but didn't fix the tether. Suggestions?
Its not clear, were you able to tether before, and now you've lost that function. Or is this the first time you've tried it?
If its the first time, ATT has blocked this function with the intent that you pay for the extra tethering fee.
But a simple reg edit works around this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=569953
Also, there is a free WiFi sharing app on this site, if you do a search. There are also paid apps, like Walking Hotspot, that also work.
Keep in mind, tethering without the tethering plan is a violation of ATT's terms and conditions. They reserve the right to levy big per kb fees or cancel your service.
That said, I've done it from time to time while on business trips (no excessive data usage), and its never been a problem.
I'm an idiot, I forgot to update my sig. I'm not running stock anymore, sorry. I actually forgot which rom I switched to, but it was one of the lighter ones. had wifi router, office, and everything basic on there though. What option do I have if I don't remember which ROM I used?
The custom ROMs I've used (Energy, simplicity) support tethering by default without any modification or settings to change. Or the WiFi router will basically do the same thing.
I still don't know if you have been able to tether before, and suddenly can't; or this is you first time attempting it.
If its something you've been able to do before, some computers can be finicky (for no very ovious reason) with the Internet Sharing function. Try a different USB port, or to reboot your system. Also, you need to have Active Sync installed on your computer (or Windows Mobile Device Center, in the case of Vista or Windows 7). This was a big "duh" moment for me one time. I was trying to get tethering up on my work laptop. Then I realized that I had never installed Active Sync since my work gave me a new laptop.
Tether/Internet Sharing via Bluetooth should also work, if you computer has Bluetooth.
I apologize again. With this ROM I've never been able to tether, and I just reinstalled windows and installed activesync. I can do activesync and file transfers and everything else. What else can I do? Maybe it's a driver issue between windows and the phone? I'unno.
This is what happens.

Ok, if you connect to the internet from the phone, and once connected you then hooked it in the PC, then you wont be able to connect tether. So turn off any phone internet connection, and then hooked it up to the PC , then connect.
I don't think he is talking about being connected to the internet. When you start Internet Sharing, it will say on the phone whether its connected to the PC over USB, or not. That is what I think the OP is talking about.
just update your rom... go to one of the energy roms that has wifi sharing built in and you'll be ready to go.
Probably the easiest thing you can do to get this working.
What I'm trying to....

What I'm trying to explain is that, if you have data running in your cell before connecting IS, and connect it to the PC it wont tether, you need to first end Data Connection, connect IS and then HOOK THE USB to the PC.

[Q] Tether instead of wifi???

Just wondering if there is a way to tether to a computer with a wired connection to get Internet connection that way, instead of using wifi??? There is lots of apps and stuff that need to connect to the internet to download, but I dont have the wifi's at home.
And if not, is it a hardware limitation, or software???
Handset in question is an Acer Liquid E
I've seen others ask this question & not get an answer that they wanted.
I'm not sure if its hardware, software or just lack of developer interest to create an app to do it.
The simple fact of the matter is that you can pick up a cheap router for $20 that'll solve the issue for you. It's not the solution you want, but it might be the only one available to you.
Heres another thread, it might have suggestions (or updates) that will be useful for you:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=554852
you are right that is definately not the answer that Im looking for, as i have a good wireless router, but i live with a Internet Nazi that doesn't want to have wireless in the household.
But thanks for the link, I'll definitely check it out : )

The best I can recommend is having a wireless card in your laptop and creating a ad-hoc network, but if I am not mistaken, the ad-hoc network is not supported on a android device.
You could always do a quick search for some software on the internet that support it, but good luck with that.
You could always convince the internet nazi to use mac address filtering on the router to ensure that only the devices you use are allowed to connect.
Don't know anything about your phone, but both WM and Android phones gladly hooks up to a comp using USB-wire (which is faster than any wireless).
WM6.5 have a program icon called Internet sharing something.
while Android got a pay/trial app called Easy Tether that for the same job.
Be aware that some provider do not allow hooking-up a computer on some cellphone plans, call your provider and ask them.
Using both a X10 Mini(Android) and a M1i Aspen(WM6.5) connected by wire both for file transfer peer2peer and Internet access.
Also there are Bluetooth and a possibility to remove the memory card from the phone and copy files to it in a card reader on a computer.
PDAnet
The only thing I can think of is an app called PDANet on the market, you do need internet to download it on your computer, but if it's a laptop, just take it to a wifi hotspot, like Starbucks or something and download the computer app, then tether all you want
PDAnet
No need to go to a wifi hotspot with the laptop to get the computer drivers for pdanet. You can do it right from the phone, it will download to your sdcard then all you do is mount the sdcard to the comp via usb and open the .exe file, load the drivers and start tethering. Only thing with PDAnet is you cant access secure websites with the free version. But it is an AWESOME app non the less.

[Q] USB Wifi Adapter

Hey guys I need some suggestions, what I want to do is use my computer downstairs to play wow. But I don't have a cord that that reaches all the way up stairs to the modem.
We do have wifi but this computer doesn't. So I want to use my MT4G as a USB Wifi adapter. I also don't want to buy one. I also don't receive any data service here. So I need to run of the wifi
I've tried Pda.net but it was way to slow to run anything, the rom i'm using is miui and when i try to tether through usb my comp says it cant find the program to install.
So if you have any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!!

Need wow that bad, you can teheter and use your phone as wifi hotspot but can't use it as a wifi card the usb ones are 20 bucks go buy one

The answer is trivial:
Have your phone with WiFi connected, plug the phone, choose USB tether mode, and it will share its WiFi with the computer.
Tethering shares whatever connectivity the phone has at the moment. Obviously you can't share WiFi connectivity over WiFi, so WiFi hotspot won't work for you, but you can share WiFi connectivity over USB.
No program is needed, if MIUI guys coded it correctly - the virtual device is RNDIS, any Windows should have drivers for it.
If you have Mac - go back to Sense ROM that can share USB with Macs using some other virtual device mode.
