I switched over to the new 20gb mobile share plan from ATT...I had the 5gb plan and continuously went over the limit and had to pay close to $100 in overages consistently. Unfortunately, I travel for work, so I'm constantly in hotels, so there's no way I can have a cable company install internet in my room, and the wifi from the hotels is hopelessly slow. I looked into broadband or "mifi" but they all had some limitations, whether in speed or in data allowance.
Here was my idea: Switch to a 4gb mobile share plan (I have 2 lines) from ATT, then get another phone from either Sprint or T-Mobile since they offer unlimited data. Sprint only offers 2gb or 6gb hotspot plans, but I'll just root and get their unlmtd plan, and T-Mo is goin to offer unlmtd 4G starting Sep. 5, and while they won't allow hotspots, once again, I'll just root. Right now, I'm paying $260/month for two smartphones and 20gb shared between the two on ATT. If I switch to 4gb, I'd be paying $150, plus getting an unlimited plan from either Sprint or TMo, get a basic Android phone that offers a tethering option, and monthly pay no more than maybe $70-$100, which would put my bill max at $250, still $10 cheaper than what I'm paying now and I get the added benefit of unlimited data.
I would be using the T-Mobile or Sprint phone for strictly a hotspot, so I'd need minimal minutes and messages. Does this make sense? Is there something I'm missing that would make this impossible?

Not to insult you, but using a phone exclusively as a hotspot is kind of a douchebag move. I know you need it for business and I know you're trying to save money, but you're the reason unlimited data is going away and carriers started cracking down on tethering. So please, don't do that, and consider going for a business line on AT&T or something.
What he said ^^^. Cricket has 3G unlimited data and they have modems as well. That may be a thought.

I have a grandfathered-in "unlimited LTE" plan with AT&T and they do throttle me to about 0.3m down 0.5m up.
I am considering switching to Tmo because it's much cheaper (60/mo versus 110/mo), I plan on staying on the same phone and just get a SIM card, get the basic talk/text plan and the unlimited 4G plan. Now my question is... in the unlimited 4G it says
"Adds Unlimited Nationwide 4G data on T-Mobiles network. Includes up to 500 MB of Smartphone Mobile HotSpot (SMH) service."
Does that means I will only be able to tether for 500mb using an unbranded N4 with android's build-in wireless tethering function? Or Tmo is going to be like AT&T just send me text message once a twice a year? My tethering usage is about 2G per week.

I have the $3/day unlimited talk/text/data plan. Does that allow tethering?
Try using foxfi. Att delisted it from market.

That depends on what you want to tether to. I have found that I can tether with tmo to other android devices, iOS devices, and my chromebook, but not to a windows or mac computer. I haven't really tried internet ready TVs or my PS3.

They send you a text at about 400mb telling you you are coming close to the limit, then at 500 telling you that you have used all available data for tethering.

So you are saying that even when it's an unbranded n4 Tmo can still find out if I am tethering or not. But with Fox fi I can tether without being caught? I have used Fox file for years until they stopped working on my Xperia TL.

Foxfi used to work before.. now they have implemented a new check for tethering which Trekkie's on the headers of transmitted data. There are fixes that rely on editing your browser string to appear like a mobile browser but your best bet is a custom rom that bypasses those checks.
On the note 2 killajoule and Jedi Master worked fine. Haven't checked for the nexus 4
Just change the user agent string on your browser and use the built in tethering.

tmobile has gotten really good at catching you while changing the browsers user agent. but you can get more than 500mb for tethering. the 50+20(unlimited plan) includes 2.5gb tethering, and you can purchase more. all the limited high speed data plan include unlimited tethering.

as of now, i have 2.5gb tethering with the unlimited high speed data plan. tmobile doesnt see when i tether my nexus 7, so that makes it easier to use the 2.5gb just for my laptop. i think they also offer 4.5gb for the unlimited high speed plan.
anyways, the last time i changed the user agent, i changed it to android(nexus 7 to be exact), it worked for half a day then they stopped it. oddly, i couldnt get data on my phone after, my phone browser kept sending me to the tmo hotspot page, and none of my apps could connect. i calked tmobile and they reset my data connection to fix it.

Oh, so you have the tethering plan. I have the T-Mobile $30 prepaid plan (unlimited data and text and 100 minutes) without an extra hotspot plan, how do I tether without the extra plan and without the tether message coming up?

I wonder if it really is the luck of the draw, and if so I guess I am "lucky". I never really gave the tethering much thought since I got my Nexus 4 last year. I haven't used it that much, once or twice while traveling and a couple of times at work to test stuff using an outside internet connection. I have never been charged or sent any kind of message from T-Mobile. I am on the $60 dollars a month prepaid plan, no tethering plan and I have never hit my 2.5gb data throttling limit. Rooted on stock with TWRP recovery, not that I think that makes much of a difference.

why are you on a $60 prepaid plan??
for $60 a month you can be on a unlimited calls/texts plan with completely unlimited high speed data and 500mb tethering, without any contract. for $70 total, its the same but tmobile also includes 2.5gb tethering.

That is the plan I am on (at least, I think so!). I have no contract, unlimited calls/texts, data that is unlimited (although they throttle 4G after 2.5gb is reached) but was not aware that 500mb tethering is included. Good to know, probably why T-Mob has left me alone so far.

thats not the plan i am talking about. the ai am talking about they do not throttle you after 2.5gb high speed data. the plan im talking about is completely unlimited high speed data.
edit.. i see they changed their plans slightly. for $10 more than you pay, you get completely unlimited high speed data and 2.5gb for tethering. your data speeds will not get slowed down at all.
I have a grandfathered unlimited data plan from Verizon. I have the 450 minute & 1K Message & $39.99 data plan for a total of $81.98. I've never once gone over my minutes in years so more than 450 isn't required.
The new unlimited everything plan is $85 and this includes Mobile Hot Spot (Needed now that FoxFi doesn't work on Nougat).
Has anyone made this switch? Is it as good of a deal as it seems? I wonder if this new plan is throttled or if it's the same as what I have now.
It's very much throttled unfortunately. In the fine print it says your internet speed will be de-prioritized after 22GB (meaning you'll be queued after other non-unlimited users), and the hotspot will only run on 3G which is basically worthless compared to 4G or WiFi.
If you are gonna switch, consider selling your plan on eBay, they're going for $1500-$1800 bucks. I'm never gonna get rid of mine.

Speeds should be the same, throttling may happen if you "use over 22GB and are in a heavily congested area."
Hotspot should also be the same but it also applies to throttling at 22GB if it is congested.
Id go to Verizon and ask them what costs would be and if you'd save money by switching to the new plan.
You get 10gb of hotspot at 4G speeds then downgraded to 3G speeds (some users reported not getting downgraded to 3G or seeing differences after 10gb). I made the switch and have yet to notice any differences. I normally end up around 20-30gb used a month.
Also you don't get throttled you get de-prioritized in congested area, meaning someone would connect to the tower before you if over 22gb. And who know what is consider a "congested" area.
verizon unlimited plan, do you guys think this will be around come october? that is when my contracts are up on my to UL old plans....

I've been thinking about getting the AT&T unlimited plan, right now they are offering the unlimited plan with 10gb of mobile Hotspot per line. My question is, is anyone currently in the new unlimited plan (not the grandfathered plan) and have you went over your 22gb of unlimited data, if so was you throttled by AT&T any.
I have the AT&T new unlimited plan and so far I have never been throttle. I switch from the grandfather unlimited plan over to the new ulimited plan and glad I did.
I am as well. I easily use 100 GB per line - 3 lines. And have never been throttled.
Thanks guys, also if i read it right, it says something like 3mbps download speed? That don't sound right and i think i probably misread it, but do you have regular 4g download speed. I'll look it up again and ss where it said that.
Edit: the 3mbps download speed is on the unlimited choice plan, not the unlimited plus.
I went ahead and swapped to the unlimited plus plan. With the HBO $25 credit plus the $10 wireless and paperless billing i figured I'd save about 25 dollars a month since this plan is 10 dollars more a month than my old one.
