Inactivity in ROM Development Section - Nexus S General

Hello,
I had been using HTC HD2 until I bought a Nexus S. I can definitely say that the ROM Development section of SNS is very quiet. There are just a few roms.
I actually miss the activity in HD2 roms section, there were new roms every day. Most of them was themed CM / stock roms.
(there were also MIUI roms, Sense roms etc but nvm that)
I don't know how to theme everything so I prefer pre-themed roms.
What do you think about this. Don't we need pre-themed roms?
I'm just a bit bored with stock CM7 =) I need different tastes.
Edit:
Btw, I tried the themes in that topic, but I couldn't get the same results as in screenshots. I just don't know. So that's why I prefer pre-themed roms.

Quite frankly, there aren't anywhere near as many people who own the NS; with the AT&T version rumored to release soon, that could change... and if the Verizon/Sprint versions ever surface it would DEFINITELY change; but for the time being, so long as there are just a few of us out there with the device, you can expect developments to be rather slow.

I agree that when the ATT model comes out things might change. With that said I'm fairly happy with the level of support for the NS after only been released for 2 months. Also, I'm more interested in ROM and kernel developers (and super awesome voodoo developer) than theme developers.
Maybe you could find a theme in the N1 or other section you like and ask the developer to port that to the NS.
Have you tried the theme chooser app with CM7? Sonny's themes are very nice too. I'm sure someone can help you get them to work (if those were the themes to which you were referring).

The HTC HD2 launched in November of 2009 in Europe, December of 2009 in Hong Kong, and March of 2010 in the US. The Nexus S launched on December 16, 2010 in the US and December 22nd, 2010 in the UK. Those are the only two countries it is currently officially available in. That means that as of yesterday this phone had two months of availability in the US and come next Tuesday the same will be true of the UK. The difference in availability to userbase alone makes it pretty clear why there would be a difference. If you wanted a device that had a lot of available ROMs buying a brand new device that hasn't even launched globally was the wrong choice.

ROM Development != ROM Theming. ROM development is actually implementing code into the ROM rather than just making the ROM look nice.
And besides, the look of Gingerbread is pretty amazing.
My personal philosophy is that, if theres a lack of something.. you could always step up and make ROMs yourself. If you don't want to, then there isn't room for someone to be complaining about the lack of development.

i cant wait to try one of your roms/themes/themed roms

There aren't enough devices out there yet. I may jump on when the ATT version comes out. I'm dying to play around with the nexus s kernel and editing that battery driver to try a few things.

2 months vs. Over a year.
Just sayin

OP...What you refer to as ROM development I call useless clutter. I'm extremely glad the Nexus S development subforum has not yet been invaded by a bunch of fools with winzip and a pirated copy of Photoshop. Let the developers develop. All that other crap belongs in Themes and Apps, for it sure isn't development by any stretch of the word.

AMEN!
Quantity != Quality.
The NS is still good enough for me as stock (kernel, rom) after two months. I'm not bored with it, and I don't miss anything (except a numbered battery meter) from a themed rom. I switched to Launcher Pro, but that's about it.
We've discussed this in multiple threads here already anyways. We've got koush, cyanogen, bionix, team whisky, morfic, supercurio all contributing. These are the superstars and I'd much rather have their support than dozens of others who slap a theme on some rom they "borrowed" from someone else and then call it their own.

that's exactly why Themes & Icons & stuff, should stay in the Theme & App section, and ROMs stays stock, then people can put whatever skin they want on top
not everyone likes the same thing

new rom

Are we going to see any new roms for the aria or no...
Sent from my HTC Liberty using XDA App
what do you mean by new roms?
We have 4 well made roms already, stock 2.1, liberated 2.1, liberated 2.2, and cm6. If you want to re-roll the stock rom 100 different ways that are all nearly exactly the same like some other phones, go right ahead.
I look forward to the new rom you are going to develop and can't wait to try it out!

It really doesnt get any better than what we already have available! In this case quality is far superior to quantity. And less confusion this way as well having less of the same thing being re-made.
thanks to all the people that made since i appricate it.. to the other fools that just wanted to come here just to type cause u are bored kick rock u lames.. i asked the question 1 maybe i am not a phone geek like u and 2 i am trying to learn.. i wasnt being smart...
It's a legit question.
People coming from other phones (WM especially) might expect 2 dozen different ROMs. The fact is, we have 4 great base ROMs, and Android's ability to customize them however you want, without needing a ton of expertise. We don't have to wait around for a select few people to cook up new updates for us.
Although, I really wouldn't be opposed to some people creating some dedicated theme ROMs.
Moved to general as this is not development.
Thats what i meant a fully theme rom.. i had a mytouch n windows mobile in the pass n i no people made more themed n customizable roms.. thank u guys..
posted via htc aria xda app..
As far as roms go - i dont think we need any more base roms - but maybe some decent themes for the Aria.
I like how polished (but few) options we have for aria. If you've ever wandered over to Nexus One development forum you will see rom overload. How would I even know where to start? With the aria it's simple, yet we have very polished options. Got to give props to attn1.

Roms on the EVO not exciting

I have been on XDA since I bought my fist G-1 way back in the fall of 08. Cyanogen was a budding star, and Android was thought of as the "IPHONE killer". I have seen many developments since my first incursion into these forums. With that said, I would like to KNOW why someone cant come up with a ROM on the evo that could be based on Android, yet be completely skinned to give a more exciting experience. The thing is most ROMS are built on many others DEV's works, but nothing but theming is added to make them look different from each other. Yes, I know that there are a lot of under the hood changes going on to make their Roms faster, but nothing to make any Rom look different. I see some launchers out there that are awesome, but why cant someone come up with something that will really show off "Something different"
Before you go on about me and that you don't like what I am saying, point me to SOMETHING ANDROID, really different and don't attack me or this thread. I appreciate all of the hard work put into changing the Roms into your own, I have flashed most of the Roms built for the Evo and earlier Android devices. What I want is something that looks and act different, built on Android. I am hoping that I have just missed a posting, or some cool thread that someone has left. I strongly dislike IPHONE and its simple stupid approach, so please don't bring that platform into this discussion. Waiting to see!
Try MIUI. Its in the Development section.
You can also take a swing at compiling a ROM yourself, I've been considering it given the tools are free.

Exactly the kind of answer I am looking for, thanks for taking the time to reply.....
I just started using MIUI yesterday and it is an eye opening experience. So many nice features that are built right in. If you haven't tried it... give it a go.
Besides roms like MIUI and MYMs warm 2.2, dev's leave the theming to you! You can load the rom you would like and then find a theme that fits you.

this is a port from the acer liquid metal, i think you will find it interesting/different.
Is there a dev working on a ROM like MIUI that completely changes the UI? I do agree with the OP because all the ROM are pretty much the same except for the color theme.
I think we will have to wait until SPB drops their software for customizing.

+1 for MIUI. Been running it since the beginning of November and I must say it's pretty awesome.
I totally agree. I have seen many roms for the evo, but many of them look very similar to each other. I'm glad this topic is being discussed in a rational matter. I hope new ideas will come from it.
I remember seeing a few articles about a mobile OS on engadget a few times before it was announced that it was killed off. It was minimalistic to its roots. The video demo I saw of it activated the menu when you slid your right thumb(right-handed demo i guess) and a arched menu would pop up. You would be able to dig deeper by going through the brances of the arcs. I for the name of it but the name "Elise" or something like it comes to mind.
If anything is lacking it's kernels for the Evo.
We have like one choice for sense based and like two for AOSP based.
The Epic has more choices... [and that's saying something]
MIUI, Liquid rush, and to be honest there are some nice sense roms out there. i like sense , also if the new launchers that are being created come out, that can give you a new look as well. There is probably a significant amount of changes, however with this being aftermarket and not supported by OEM's and sprint i think that kind of limits your choices
You might like myn's warm two point two, it still retains the sense features from htc but has a totally different look and feel to it. Also checkout virus rom, those are pretty nice. A lot of people here are into switching roms each week to keep things interesting.
The two big ones that are not sense based are miui and cyanogen. I think the reason they take so long to make and that there is so few is the complexity of starting from scratch. At least I think, but I'm not a programmer.

Thats because the mods keep on banning our best kernel makers.
Hero_over and Kingslik(sp?) both made the best kernels during their time on XDA/Evo.

I know. I'm just making an observation on the current reality
I can't really disagree with you but I think the reason why lots of the ROMs look alike is Sense. That said, I've been on MIUI since it came out. While others will scream that it's just copying iPhone, maybe it is but the ROM still retains all the benefits of android underneath.
Also, if it's just the launcher, I've tried out the Go Launcher and liked it the best. Again, it's not the same-old same-old.

I agree with you on SPB, it's a wait and see, I tried to be a bete tester for them, but I didnt get accepted. I have used it on my winmo devices in the past. Not sure what kind of experience though maybe just a nice launcher. I have to admit though I haven't tried MIUI, I do believe I will flash it later tonight.

Whats up with the roms lately?

I just wanted to get a feel/consensus on peoples opinion of the third party rom scene for the EVO. I started my XDA days back with a tilt, and have been loyal to HTC since then.
The EVO is simply the best phone out there at the moment, IMO. But the roms seem to be very lacking in actual substance and it's a bit disappointing.
Almost every rom I've looked at here has been so customized and themed they are really just eyesores. It was normal on all my other devices to have some of the roms that were being produced be like this, but not all. I've been really impressed in the past with HTC roms. Dutty is one of my favorites.
The only 2 current exceptions I've found are CM and Fresh, and since some of us refuse to use sense, it really only leaves one choice.
CM is awesome, and the work that goes into it is really really amazing. There isn't a bunch of customization to the UI, it's left up to you what you want to do for how your phone looks. It's a rock solid foundation to build upon, and it would be awesome to see more roms in that form.
Thoughts? Am I missing something?
This is the wrong section, the General section would be the appropriate section for this.
this should be in general, but i agree it seems that lots of roms out there are just customizations of existing roms, a color change here and there. There really isnt anything major to differentiate between sense roms, except for 3 or 4 big ones, and then there is CM rom, and the roms based of CM seem like just themed version of CM, but who knows i mean im not a developer, maybe theres only so much one can do as far as development.

What else do you want the ROM's out there to do?:
OC: Check
Undervolt: Check
AOSP Builds: Check
Open Source 4G: Check
De-odex: Check
Wide Variety of Themes: Check
Open Source FM Radio: Check
Wireless Tether: Check
Wired Tether: Check
Gingerbread: Check
AND THE LIST GOES ON...
What I'm trying to say is, unless your speaking specifically about HDMI, there's really not a lot left to be desired that can't be had from these phones until Honeycomb hits.
I mean, CM even supports SIP accounts natively...among the millions of other small details that are so amazing.
Even DLNA can be had through a simple app...what's left for you to want so badly that your phone cannot do already?
My point is, is that most devs are not going start over from scratch just for the heck of it, when something so close to optimum potential has already been reached.
Sent from my 4G-Toting, Lightning Smoking, Gingerfied, Cyanogenmodded EVO: Please stand back!
Itotally disagree. I mean, some, yeah, you're right, but look at the mods done to the more popular roms. Not just theming but tweaks, custome apps, etc.
What more do you want form a ROM?
And while, true, some people are married to CM, some are more into Senseui, some Miui.
Everyone has different tastes, and from what I se eon here, there's something for just about everyone.
Thread moved to General.
As per your questions, devs make roms based on their personal taste and, in many cases, general feedback from the users. There are many plain, stock rooted roms out there, and many tutorials in case you want to make your own as well. Also, you can easily theme any rom to your liking. I hope this answers your concern.
i think the ROM's on the evo are pretty strong. My criteria is, do the majority if not all ROM's improve upon stock? Yes. Do the majority if not all the dev's support their ROM's and upgrade in a timely manner? Yes Do the majority if not all the dev's have themes/mods available for their ROMS? Yes. Are there more than one style of ROM's to choose? YES 1. Sense 2. AOSP - MIUI 3. AOSP - CM 4. AOSP - Liquid metal

I've had 4 Android phones:
Evo
G2
MyTouch 3g Slide
Moto Cliq
This forum has more roms, kernels, mods, themes, etc than all 3 of my prior phones combined. Every time I hit the dev section I'm a kid in the candy store. There's fully functioning roms that work with everything and a few that I'm excited to see get better, like MIUI getting 4g.
There's very few phones out there with this much dev support, my friend has an LG vortex. Go find the LG vortex section of the forums. They don't exist.
My point, you have to do some digging but there's something here for everyone. If there isn't, make it! We could always use another dev to try to topple the big dogs.

I haven't tried MIUI yet, so I won't vote. But I've been playing with the stable version of Cyanogen Mod for a week now and like it. It's heads and shoulders better than the stock ROM.
CM-based ROMS are nice, but video hardware decoding support is spotty. I use my phone to play 1080p/720p videos quite often, which are often unwatchable using software decoders. So I have no choice but to stick with Samsung-based ROMs for now...

I never tried MIUI because it looks to me like a clone of iPhone, when I want iPhone I buy iPhone...
I used CM7 because of its configuration options and theme chooser, hope CM9 will get them too...
I've tried all of them.
I prefer Samsung based ROMs at this time. They just seem to be the smoothest, most reliable ROMs which is not a surprise really. I did go through a phase where almost everything was stock but I've gone back to Go Launcher and Go SMS as I found the Samsung launcher too limiting (even though it is smooth, though Go Launcher isn't far behind) and the same can be said for the Sammy SMS app, also I find it a little slower than Go SMS in terms of responsiveness.
Cyanogen ROMs I feel do not run as fluidly as Samsung ROMs, and generally contain more bugs. As another poster said, they lack some of the codec support of the Samsung ROMs. Also, and I realise you can change this with themes etc, but the AOSP Android is a bit bland, at least in pre-ICS form. And CM9 simply isn't ready yet as a daily driver IMO. I look forward to revisiting CM9 when it is more polished.
MIUI ROMs I really like in terms of features. Everything you need is there out of the box, however, I find them resource hogs, and go a step further again than Cyanogen in not running as fluidly. You can see this when jumping from screen to screen or navigating menus, it feels like I am running an old Nexus One again in terms of speed. It just isn't fluid. This was a while ago so maybe things have changed. If they sorted these issues out, it could be the most fantastic ROM.
So Samsung ROM for me at the moment.

true Sir i did not see the poll you already had above as i was on the phone. but anyhow android development is not just sammy based roms you have MIUI in there plus CM7 like builds and ICS but personally for me..I like so far yes you got it right Sammy based roms....But as soon source code gets released and Siyah is out for CM9 and they get it more stable i am making the leap straight away....
Cheers...Still find this pointless thread but anywhoo
I also prefer stock ROM's.
Not to ditch efforts of all custom ROM makers, but two reasons my stock preference. I really don't trust enough to 3rd party applications much. That's even true for my desktop computer.
Second of all, I'm a bit lazy to deal with any problems, bugs or other stuff that may occur and obviously more chance of bricking phone with 3rd parties.
Third reason unlike most, I really like TouchWiz and additions that Samsung did over standard Android. I have two other Android based devices, one of them is default, other is HTC. I know they lack a lot of free utilities and touch & feel, (and no Sense does not cut it)

Does MX video player rely on samsung codecs? because I use it with my stock rom and the latest versions play almost everything in Hw decoders.
Older versions used to play some video files in sw decoders , but now everything is hardware accelerated and I even use it instead of the default player.
So my understanding is that if an update made the app support more video formats in Hw decoding mode ,then it should be indpendent of the rom we're using ,right?
Anorexic stock for me. Never liked MIUI, and appreciate the stability/100% functionality of stock over CM every time.
Used the ROM kitchen on my SGS1, got used to having no bloat, and haven't looked back since.
The ROM in my sig ticks all my boxes.
I like Samsung Roms firstly for the Email app for my Company's exchange account. Also for the Enchansed camera app, for the BEST stability and Siyah Kernel for Speed and Battery life!
I voted for cyanogen, but honestly the best ROM is always the one I just flashed

CM7 & MIUI, whats the hype?

Am I totally missing something with these 2 roms? They seemed to be all the rage and everyone's is so happy we have them, but I don't see what's so great. Both threads for these list numerous bugs and issues. The CM7 has a nightly update for god's sake! If it needs nightly updates it sounds like it doesn't work all that great. And MIUI looks like an iphone.
I'm not trying to start a riot in here either lol. I just don't see what the hype is for.
I would suggest trying them for yourself before knocking them To answer your question in a short manner. The answer is options. You have numerous options and tweaks on both roms that you won't find anywhere else. CM blazes through everything for the most part. MIUI, I hear that iphone excuse all the time. With all the mtz files there are you can make it look like anything you want to. Mix n match like no other rom. Look at the threads started by me and you will see one called "One Stop Shop" with some good info on MIUI.

Whoops. You got a free thanks
Anyways, if u want a shorter answer instead of reading thru these 2 paragraphs, either read Jay's response above, and/or drop to the last paragraph in my response.
Now, let's begin with CM7. We are an officially supported CM7 device, but we still do not have a close to 100% RC yet. There are still some very small quirks that need work, hence, nightlies. All nightlies are, are EXPERIMENTAL builds that contain the most recent advancements. They may or may not be as stable as an RC, which means they can both include fixes, and bugs. The reason for the hype if because its an AOSP ROM. Some ppl aren't very fond of Samsung's TW UI and would rather run on AOSP. The other side to that is updates. We were "lucky" to receive official GB, but we probably won't be "lucky" with ICS, which its safe to say, we will eventually be receiving thanks to CM and our CM Team.
As for MIUI, its based off of CM. This ROM is better known for a greater "customizable" experience. With MIUI you get a similar AOSP experience except with more themes. With MIUI you are able to choose a specific theme for SMS, another theme for the dialer, and another for contacts, etc. So you can basically mix n match themes here n there. The things with MIUI is that it kinda "piggybacks" on CM's proggress, so updates will come a bit after our CM ROMs/Kernels are updated.
****Bottom line: CM7 & MIUI offer a minimilistic AOSP experience, including support, which may or may not include updates that could extend your phones lifespan****

I wasn't knocking them, just didn't see the overwhelming hype. Thanks for the info though. I do love an AOSP rom and use them often. at the moment I am running the clean GB which is sort of aosp. I didn't know about the MIUI themes, that might be interesting if i can get away from the iphone feel.
I am looking forward to the CM9 ICS rom.. now THAT i will be excited about lol.
thanks for the info everyone.

The nightly updates are a feature, not a bug, CyanogenMod is supported by at least 20 different devices, with heavy development on just the base code too, when something for our device, or something in the base code is updated, it is immediately released every night so that everyone is completely current with the latest features and bugfixes
My personal favorite enhancements that were brought with CM7 are Themes that change immediately (No restarts needed, or a visit to clockwork), hundreds of themes available at a moments download from the market (or xda and other places), DSP sound enhancement, moving the status bar to the bottom of the screen (really handy, right by the buttons), performance-wise it is top notch (besides a few bugs that don't really effect me), gestures on the lockscreen (write a G and BAM gmail), Swipe to remove notifications, and I could go on...
Point is, Touchwiz can lick my ***, it offers nothing to me that isn't done better in CM7...
Never used MIUI before, so I dunno about that one...

I'm looking forward to MIUI4 You can always run adw, go, etc., over miui if you want. There is also an app called "altdrawer" that I have linked, if you want to keep all the miui mtz icons and launcher.

I wouldn't use MIUI for the Epic4g (Even though MIUI itself is great) due to bugs.
However, CM7 and eventually CM9 are something I'd highly recommend on any device supported.
Do some research, use Google. Cyanogen Mod has a website itself full of information.
Both represent things that Samsung and Sprint consider not possible with this device.
CM giving you the pure Google experience minus all the Touch Wiz/carrier/Sammy bloat.
MIUI which was/is a very popular ROM across quite a few platforms showing yet another stripped down, minimal experience.
As far as nightlies go... That is progress in the works. Things get implemented, tested by users and then tweaked/fixed/eliminated as the product progresses forward.
I think the best thing ever is CM9 coming to the Epic 4g. This shows that Sammy and Sprint are full of it when it comes to ICS-Android 4.0 on this device. CM team deserves a huge pat on the back for making this happen.

Thanks for that write up. I got CM, but didnt get MIUI. I was thinking it was a CM clone that lagged behind CM in updates, and was made to look like an iPhone.
Your explanation clears up my confusion rather nicely!
I have ran the last 15 cm7 nightlies and they are pretty solid other than a few volume issues I haven't had problems. I am currently trying out miui and it's nice. Packed full of options and everything is working well for me. Miui can be made to look any way u want. I have a gs2 lock screen, some ics theming, s2 boot animation. GPS got a 2 meter lock first try...no complaints
The reason for all of the bug reports is because they're in development threads - we'd be preaching to the choir if we always reported on the benefits (the developers know those things, that's why they took up the porting project). It doesn't mean that the rom sucks, not by any means

Definitely doesn't suck. To the op...make a backup and try out some stuff. Clean gb is not aosp some tw still there. I oddly like tw bit having variety has brought life back into the epic. I was sure it would be a dead phone until recently when I found out cm and miui became available. Whether people like it or not...once these developers came aboard it helps the entire development process.
Best argument for CM7, as someone already mentioned, is the nightly updates. Remember how long it took to get Froyo? It was due to Sprint/Samsung adding their bloat. Cyanogenmod eliminates those 2 middle men. Thank you devs.

I was exactlyyyyyyy like youuu
Until I flashed cm7 and seen how amazing it really is
I still do think about other tw roms tho cuz every rom is unique and amazing in its own way
But cm7 it really great you could literally do anything u want there's settings for everythingg and themes in the market is amazing
And I never tried miui but as soon as it gets 4g ill b one of the first ppl to flash it lol

I wont whore up this thread but my gripe w cm7 currently is the camera and the volume bug. Its tolerable but damn the camera takes a while to open compared to tw and the volume bug, since I use speaker phone a lot is rather annoying. Still fantastic work. Almost there and its so close. It weird how the volume bug only attacks calls. Media volume control is perfect. But whatever, they will get it. Had this phone since launch day and been Modding it since then lol. This is the best time for the epic now that so many options are available
As a couple others have stated, my only gripe with CM7 is the volume issue on phone calls. If that ever gets squashed, it's damn near perfect for me. My phone runs so much smoother and faster on CM, and the amount of options available to customize your phone (profiles, themes, quiet hours, interface tweaks, etc) makes it even more worth it. I was a CleanGB user for a long time until recently as it is my favorite TW based ROM out there until it ceased being so "clean" with all the continued added stuff so I made the jump to at least try CM (especially since Toad made an MTD version of CleanGB to ease flashing back and forth) and haven't looked back.

There's so many nightlies because of new features being added, new improvements if you want something stable but miss all the goodies then stick with a stock rom. Simple as that man. MIUI I do agree is iPhonish but does have android implemented but I don't care for it good to those who have it but that's my opinion. And CM7 is a great AOSP rom no will ever be able to beat it

Cm7 is great with all the added features and the fact that installing a new theme is one market search away, but its not the end all be all of all roms imo! I do like it but I like all of the ei22 tw roms also... my favorite is the viper rom (for now) and imo it is better than cm7... great battery life and super snappy... I haven't tried cm7 since the rc0 w/ wimax hit so I am probably missing out though.. I know a lot has been fixed since then but I just can't bring myself to flash it yet... cm9 will be the end all be all for me! Looks amazing in the videos, can't wait!!!
