I'm not sure if it has something to do with SMOLED in general, or if it's particular to the Nexus S, but I'm noticing oddities with the screen. Can't be sure if it's software related, or if it's hardware related.
There are two things. One, it sometimes doesn't register presses, even when an icon is clearly pressed; the orange highlight that surrounds an icon is clearly seen but it doesn't launch the app. It requires a second touch. I'm guessing this is mostly software related, but either way, it's disappointing to see Android like this (or, if hardware related, sad to see SMOLED like this).
The 2nd thing is, the screen seems problematic for the complete opposite reason sometimes. Has anyone ever hovered their fingers over the screen without actually touching it? Sometimes it'll register presses this way. I'm guessing this is hardware related? Either way, I have no doubt this causes unintended screen presses, and might go a long way in explaining typos and frequent errors that occur when typing quickly where your fingers glaze over the screen (like I often see double letter hits, like tthis or thiss - very annoying).
Not sure what the deal is, whether it's software or hardware contributing to these two oddities/problems - or a combination of both. Either way, these two things can make the Google Android experience feel second rate.
Additionally, I think this goes a long way in explaining my frustrations with typing on Android. Missed space bar presses are particularly frequent, resulting in words likethis; while other times, double hits occur, per my example above (like tthis or thiss). Again, it detracts from the overall Android experience and can be frustrating when thumbing out long messages.
The first issue might be related to the Launcher you're using. Are you on stock launcher or did you install something else like ADW or Launcher Pro? If you're on a third party, try it back on stock, or dig into the settings for your 3rd party launcher and see if there are tweaks you can turn on/off that might impact it. I know ADW has a "keep in memory" toggle; stuff like that is what I'd play with.
The other problem is something I've seen several people mention in here. I'm not sure I notice it or not, BUT, I just read this interesting article yesterday, which suggests to me that the screen is ultra-sensitive to touch. The article authors are amazed that they can use the back of their fingernail, or even wear gloves and still register touch on the screen. Other phones aren't so sensitive.
It seems they did something to increase the capacitive touch sensitivity, and perhaps a bit too much. Hopefully it can be software fixed.
The NS is such a lovely device, but it's got it's fair share of quirks, both hardware and software that really mar the experience for many. I love the phone, but am still considering returning it when my 30 days is almost up.

As for the launcher, I am currently using ADW because there are a slew of glitches and issues with the stock launcher, including the unresponsive issue I wrote about in my OP. ADW Launcher is unquestionably more reliable, smoother, and stable.
It's unfortunate the experience with the Nexus S can be so polarizing: sometimes the screen is not responsive, and other times, too responsive.
And I have to reiterate, the experience typing on this phone (and on Android in general) remains a particular sore spot for me.

No kidding. I don't have to actually touch the screen at all. Just hovering the tip of the finger 0.5mm over the screen is enough. Which is not really a problem, because it's quite difficult to do that.
I have found the same issue with the screen, it is very sensitive to touch. As for the bad selection and typing errors, I think that is more more likely software related, try a different keyboard?

I'm currently trialing Swiftkey. It is impressive the few times it works to perfection, but this is usually a rare occurrence. More often than not, I'm still having to type out my words, however, perhaps it's still "learning" how I type. For now, I feel like the experience is actually slower than manually thumbing out messages because you're so busy concentrating on picking the correct predicted word. In some ways, it's counter intuitive to messaging quickly. I have until the end of the month before the trial expires, so we'll see if the experience is improved.
Prior to that, I was using either stock keyboard, or Smart Keyboard Pro. Both have their positive and negative issues, but those two offerings are as good as it can be on Android, it seems. Which is to say, it's disappointing. I have many typing woes. I have to say, the typing experience pales in comparison to typing on iPhone/iPod touch devices. I can type far more confidently and smoothly on an iPhone than I can with any Android device I've used so far. I'm hoping, one day, when Blindtype is implemented, this will change.
I didn't like swiftkey, and don't understand its popularity, having to check the scrolling bar for which word i wanted slowed me down. I agree that the typing accuracy on an iPhone is superior to android devices, there are many things I don't like about the iPhone keyboard but the accuracy is very good.
Have you tried Swype? I believe the beta is now open to all to try, google it, as its not in the market. Failing that, apps like Shapewriter (when it becomes available again) and SlideIT keyboard are other similar options. Or if you want to go all-out weird with text input, try 8pen.
i found the same bugs
and my guess it has to do with the Concave design, that throws off the screen calibration.
on the SGS, the touches are 110% accurate

Agreed. However, I'm trying my best to give Swiftkey ample opportunity to grow on me, and as I said, when it actually predicts your words accurately, it's quite intuitive, but this happens rarely. Most of the time it guesses incorrectly and you end up thumbing in almost all the letters to a word anyway. Swiftkey slows me down too and I, ironically, end up taking longer to type out messages. Like you, I'm too busy making sure it's predicting correctly the next words I want to say. In many ways, it's counter-intuitive.
And it's a shame Google didn't set itself apart from Apple's keyboard. They could/should have included custom auto-corrections, etc.

Thanks for the suggestions. Yes, I forgot to mention I have the Swype Beta. Swype is quite fun and often impressive, but like Swiftkey, I find it cumbersome when I'm trying to type 'personal' words like unique names of places, or uncommon lingo and words, etc. Plus, when you start getting into long words, Swype becomes difficult to track. Perhaps I just need more practice, but ultimately found it slower than thumbing it out. I have tried a few other options, like the one where the keys change sizes depending on predictions, and even 8pen (novel, but no thanks), but nothing seems capable of accurately mimicking the iPhone/iPod Touch typing experience. Anyone who has typed extensively on both platforms will know the difference.
I would just like to be able to thumb out messages minus the odd errors and mis-presses/unregistered presses, or the overly sensitive presses. Smart Keyboard Pro remains the best choice, in my opinion, but even that has hiccups and my aforementioned problems. It's probably a combination of software and hardware that is contributing to my typing woes.

I don't have problems with it not registering presses, but it certainly is sensitive. Depending on conditions, you can register a press by hovering your finger 1-2mm off the screen surface. This has rarely bothered me, but if you keep your fingers very close in while you're typing, yeah, I can see it being really problematic.
EDIT: Actually, Android Central posted a short article and video just this morning about how you can use your Nexus S with certain types of gloves on in the winter cold because of this.

Yeah, but what that basically means is there's a different thickness of glass between the touchscreen and your finger at different points on the screen. I don't claim to know much about capacitative touch technology, but that seems likely to make for a much touchier sensitivity calibration than a traditional flat screen.

Not sure if I'm liking what I'm hearing. If the screen is indeed too sensitive and is the cause of my typing woes, I don't suppose there's a way to dial it down via software, is there?

I've had this happen to me a couple times. I could see how its annoying, but I'm coming from a nexus 1 where you could mash the screen at times and nothing would happen so its nice to have a sensitive screen.
I don't see that I've mentioned it in this particular thread, but I have in others, so forgive me for repeating myself, but for short messages I really find the best solution is to just use the voice input.
Not to dismiss the need for an accurate, fast, easy to use keyboard, but I think Voice Actions and Voice Input are one of the absolute best features of Android that don't get a lot of attention.
I won't say Voice Actions has changed my life, but it's definitely changed the way I do several things (like to-do lists), and how I interact with my phone.
edit: Another good keyboard is Better Keyboard, it lets you see where you hit the keys to help train yourself on it; not sure it's any more accurate than the others though.

I agree. Voice input is very good with the S, much better than it was with the N1.
Smart keyboard pro is also a good one.

Yes, I've attempted to use Voice Actions, especially while driving. Usually it gets what I want to say correct, but unfortunately, it doesn't always get the person I'm trying to send it to correct. In fact, it never does. Same is true for when I'm not driving. So I end up having to cancel the command and type it out anyway.
I bought Better Keyboard long ago. It was one of the first third party keyboards I tried. I found the experience atrocious (at the time, it lacked true multitouch. If you think stock keyboard missed letters... you should try BK!). My understanding is that multitouch is implemented now, so perhaps I'll give it another try.
Edit: Also, Smart Keyboard Pro offers touch points and calibration to help you see where you mistype and to calibrate it to your typing style. These features help, but there's no mistaking that the phone (softward or hardware?) often misfires or misses presses altogether. Problems that appear like tthis or thiss or whenever it misses a space bar press (despite the space bar clearly being highlighted on the keyboard) resulting in words likethis are far too frequent and have nothing to do with pressing accuracy.

exactly... too much empty space in between, that's why the areas around the edge at the bottom are harder to register
Hey so I don't know if anyone else has been experiencing this but whenever I type on the A7 (using the standard keyboard), I always get random letters that I didn't even touch getting typed in. i.e. If I try to type "right" I would get something like "riyught" or if I type in one letter like "l" I would get "lmj" or something like that. I don't know if that's clear but it's really hard to type anything basically and it's very frustrating. I notice this more when I type fast (which I have come accustomed to do). I can't type a single word without having to backspace the errors (and I can type relatively error free on my evo). Even hitting backspace types in a bunch of random letters!
Any alternative keyboards anyone is using that may work better than the standard keyboard? Don't know if it's a software or calibration issue.
I'm not a huge fan of the built-in keyboard either, but my wife doesn't seem to mind too much and the less change for her, the better for me.
I will say, however, that I absolutely hated the keyboard on my Incredible. I did some testing with various options and ended up going with SwiftKey. I absolutely love it. Testing it on the A7 is on my list of things to do.
I'm a big fan of Graffiti. I'm an old Palm OS user from back in the day, and always found it to be intuitive. Tehre is a learning curve, but its good. The newest version includes annoying adds. See if you can find an older version.
Gingerbread (Android 2.3) Keyboard
1. your issue is probably coming from typing too fast. I've found that if I pause just a bit, the keyboard works great.
2. That said, I love the ports of the Android 2.3 keyboard. There is a new one (just search market for gingerbread keyboard) it's free and works great.
Thanks for the suggestions guys- I've tried swype-like keyboards and with the size of the screen it was a little difficult to slide around to type. palm based keyboards were more my thing when I used a stylus. airball, I just downloaded the ginerbread keyboard and it is MUCH better. I can type my normal fast pace and only have an error or two. thanks!
Keyboard feedback...
I noticed today that I was going a little crazy with my phone with the gingerbread keyboard and upbruptly the feedback sort of died. It was like that until I restarted the phone. I remember on my vibrant that you could adjust the vibration intensity and I would set it lower but haven't seen such a setting on this phone. Has anyone else experienced their feedback dying on them? I was actually scared that i might have broken it but it came back normal after restarting. A bug maybe?

[Q] Keyboard Issues
Has anyone been noticing any issues with the keyboard on the Nexus S? At times I cannot type anything onto the screen or a the "Force Close" dialog box will appear.
Yeah.. I had this problem the other day. I posted a thread about it and didn't get any replies.. lol. It happened to me when I tried to use the voice action for the first time on the keyboard.

Ditto. This is one of the most disappointing things. It's a shame Google's stock Android keyboard doesn't offer any deep features for custom text and custom auto texts like Smart Keyboard Pro does. They have an opportunity to really deviate and advance from the iPhone's keyboard, but Google seems content in just copying Apple in respect to the keyboard functions and lack thereof of more features, which I don't understand.
Unfortunately, even Smart Keyboard Pro has hiccups and miss-presses (especially with the space bar; you often get words likethis. Very frustrating).
Hopefully the keyboard will get better with future updates. Gingerbread, in general, is chalk full of hiccups. It is not lag free as most reviews claim.
I have the same issue. It doesn't happen all of the time but when it does it is annoying. It's weird because letters around the one I am trying to push work sometimes.
I just have to delete the letter before it and keep trying to enter it again
I didn't have any problems with the Gingerbread keyboard when I installed the APK on my Vibrant. Weird.

I was just thinking that. The length doesn't bother me so much, but I feel like I have to shove my finger into the very bottom of the screen to hit space. I've taken to just using the word suggestion bar to auto-space instead.
But to address the OP, no, haven't noticed any issues with responsiveness yet.

This is why I don't really like most android keyboards, the space bar is wayy too small. I've been alternative between the "iPhone Keyboard Emulator" and Swype.
I can type on an iphone (or even an ipod) more confidently than I can on any Android device. The Android keyboard on Gingerbread is without question improved over previous iterations, but still a far cry from the accuracy and responsiveness of iphones/ipods. It's also unfortunate Google doesn't take their keyboard past Apple's in terms of customization and ability to add auto correct and other features. For example, I don't understand why we still can't long press to get every alternative symbol.
I like the Gingerbread keyboard fine, space bar aside. I liked Swype better, but unless I'm mistaken, that can't be downloaded from the Market. Not willing to pay to try SlideIT, now that we're down to fifteen-minute trials.
I have been nothing but in love with the stock keyboard
I use Smart Keyboard Pro, best keyboard imo and I've tried them all.

SKP is amazing. The customization and features are robust and fantastic. However, don't you find it often misses space bar presses on the NS? Very often you'll get words likethis. It's so bad I reverted back to using stock Android keyboard.
When is Google going to implement Blindtype, which they recently bought back in October? I'm excited for the potential of this, because as is, the Android keyboard is poor when typing fast - it's error prone, it misses keys (particularly the space bar), the auto-correct is not as smart as it claims it is, there's virtually no customization (a cue unwisely taken from Apple), it sometimes doubles up on letters like sso, and etc.
I'm not attempting to start any immature wars, as I know this can happen anytime someone mentions the iPhone, but has anyone here actually typed on an iPhone, or even an iPod? If there's one thing that the iPhone commands respect in, its the keyboard. If you get a chance, try it sometime. The responsiveness is perfect. I truly wish I can say the same about Android's keyboard. Those who have tried both will understand the difference.

Maybe it's because of how I type, but I don't think my old iPod had much on my new Nexus S in terms of its keyboard. It could just be because Android has had the benefit of a year of improvements since my iPod was functional, though.

Anyone notice when trying to type "I'm" (letter i then m) really fast, it often spells out "km" instead? And even when you clearly hit the letter i, as you're moving toward the letter m, it hits the k inadvertently, and results in "km"? Anyone else? It's quite frustrating.
Not sure if this has been mentioned (I didn't read through every response), but the first NS I got seemed to have a grounding issue with its screen, making a portion of the keyboard unusable at times. Holding it differently or using my other hand to press the keys would work.
I was able to confirm that it was an issue with the screen rather than the keyboard by using one of the Multitouch test apps and setting the new Nexus Live Wallpaper as my background to test those portions of the screen when it was acting up.
Best Buy gave me no trouble exchanging it (just a long line).
On my second Nexus S I have noticed what seems to be a similar issue. My troubled area seems to be the L M key region. Ill give it a few more days to make sure it's not just me and if need be I'll exchange it.

Typing responsiveness is a major issue for me.
Most web browsers, and most apps on the phone, even in texting........the responsiveness of typing is extremely poor.
Let's say for instance, I was typing the word: refrigerator
If I typed it very quick, most likely input would be lost by the 2nd or 3rd letter.
I never had this issue on the iphone
No matter what app I typed into on the iphone(when I had it) text input responsiveness was near 95-99% accurate, even when "texting" lightning quick.
The only time.........I ever get near 100% accuracy when putting text input at lightning speeds on the Atrix is when I "show keyboard" when I am making a phone call.
That's the screen where you get a large keypad, and the numbers are large green squares. Something about the memory management on this screen is perfect, but EVERY single other instance on the phone where I do input, text input accuracy is down near 15-20%...
I'm near the point of wanting to return this phone, because of this "aesthetics bull****"

get the swype keyboard. I have never had this issue and i type pretty fast. I had an iphone and i can say it is just as fast if not faster.
Google "swype beta" and that will help you set everything up. it doesnt miss a letter EVER for me.
If your running a live wallpaper .. switch to a static one.. are you useing motoblur launcher?
Download an app to see how much free memory you have and what processes are running..

don't google it. just go to anything that has a text box, long press the box, select input method, and change to the swype keyboard. it comes on the phone, and if you try and install the beta over it you will screw it up.
there are many many different keyboards for android, start playing with some different ones till you find what you like.
I never noticed that as an issue on mine. Recently I switched from Swype to FlexT9 (speak/trace/write/tap). The speed and accuracy is really good and I like the predictive text. Also its speech to txt engine is scary accurate. Amazon app store (have to have sideloading enabled to be able to access the Amazon store I believe) was giving the Flex away for free the other day (each day Amazon gives away a free app).
I rooted my phone at one point, then went back to stock after I went to 4.1.83, and at&t unrooted my phone etc...........
Since I am now at 4.1.83, do I have to somehow flash to an older version, to get some of these keyboard alternatives?
On a side note, since I went to 4.1.83, is my phone screwed....ie: no future rooting?
I read the may 18th post on the main website, not the forums here, that the atrix full bootloader unlock/(work around/BL bypass) is coming.....
But has no one noticed ANY issue with the stock keyboard, ie: text responsiveness? its really frustrating.
I've tried SWYPE, and i like it......it is accurate, but I'm very used to typing manually very fast, with no memory leaks...

for the short time i used the stock keyboard i noticed no issues with it. it's a multitouch keyboard, so it should be excellent.
to get other keyboards just search for them in the market and install them.
swype lets you type like a normal keyboard as well as the swyping motion, you can try that.
you can still root, thought you don't need it for keyboards. just find the gingerbreak method.

I know exactly what you're saying. And the real problem isn't the keyboard but motoblur. The multitouch keyboards on other phones are excellant but on the Atrix its very unresponsive because of the motoblur junk but if you download almost any other keyboard from the market you'll notice that the responsiveness is instant and you can type as fast as you want so hussy give other keyboards a try for the time being.

Swiftkey is another good replacement. I do have the T9 one mentioned earlier but I haven't tried it. As someone else said, go to the development forum and find the easy gingerbreak thread... it really is easy. (Backup your internal SD card first).
The keyboard does seem to be a little bit better on the iphone. I had the Iphone when i decided to find out what all the hype was about. I don't like many things about the Iphone which is why I use an android phone still. My HTC G1 had this terribly but don't notice it on the Atrix, however i used swype pretty much from the time i took it out the box. Just did a quick test to see if i could simulate what you talking about. I seem to mis-type and catch the letter beside the one that i want but haven't missed but a few letters here or there.
However I prefer to swype and my Iphone 4 didn't have that, even third party through cydia. Try using swype or flext9, typing is so old school. I love the flext9 app because I can drive and just talk to my phone and it types my texts for me. I suppose there are many other apps that do this very well also and probably for free. The app also learns to stop suggesting bs words that i don't ever use and inputs the ones i use most often saving me time when replying. I have big fingers and always type the letters beside the ones that i want anyway even on the Iphone, so i don't plan on ever typing anytime soon.
I switched from the 3gs too and had the same issues. Here's what I did to fix them:
1) get rid of motoblur launcher and install launcher pro. After doing that my keyboard got much smoother.
2) Install the gingerbread keyboard from the market. Its free, but the paid one has a nifty feature where you can adjust key size. If you don't want to pay, I suggest rooting and installing gingerblur, which comes with a new keyboard.

The original keyboard is garbage. I switched to 'elite keyboard pro', pro being the pay version. They have an iphone 'theme', that should get you back to a more comfortable place and its very responsive.
I love Swype. I didn't mind the stock keyboard, but i'd say my issue with it was more an apparent lack of auto correct than being unresponsive. I'd notice it i tried to type as fast on the stock keyboard as i did on my iPhone 4, i'd wind up having misspelled words fairly often (probably due to different letter spacing between the iPhone an Atrix). Don't think i've ever noticed an unresponsiveness.
If I am running Android 2.2.2, with 4.1.83(att / motorola patch), which software do I use to root my phone?
There seems to be so many methods out here right now....etc.
Hey everyone, I came from a Galaxy S4 (using I believe Android 4.X for the longest time), to finally upgrading to an S8 (on Android 7.X now), and I'm getting really fed up with the keyboard, so I'm hoping someone more experienced in the matter can help me with. Dunno if these are an issue on the S8, on Android 7.0, both, or whatever, but it's driving me insane.
But first: Using Samsung's keyboard (English US), predictive text is on, auto spell check is on, and I typically use "swipe to type" rather than pressing individual keys. This is also what I did on all my old phones and it's never been this horrible.
- The autocorrect isn't learning. At all. I cannot tell you how many times I've use the words "to/too", "home" and "come", but every single time, I get "top", "hone", and "cone", to the point where I've had to delete the words from the phone's dictionary. Never had this problem except on brand new phones (and by brand new, I mean first day or two of having it, not *2 full weeks later*).
- On top of autocorrect not learning, randomly I'll get 2 separate words, though it's more gibberish like "c be" or something like that. It's definitely not what I swiped and I don't know what I do differently to see such results. I don't even know how swiping can get you two words, let alone when there's no differentiation between short and long words. Again, never had this issue before.
- For whatever reason, some texts/other inputs put a space before the first word. It starts fine, but as soon as I input the first word, there's a space before it. It's minor but with my OCD, it drives me insane and I'd really like it to stop.
So yeah, those are my problems, really hoping someone can help me out, even if I have to download a new keyboard (if it comes to that).

You have described my frustration to a T. I came from an S5 to S8+ and the swipe/dictionary is driving me crazy. Same things you experiencing. I try to type Saturday, it gives me two words cn.. theiys Makes no sense, don't know where that comes from. I get random spaces, especially if I edit. I can't figure out how to update the dictionary as like you, it is not "learning" me at all. I try to use the word "will" in a sentence and it gives me "Erik". HUH??? It should give the most common word first. I can't imagine more people are typing Erik than will.
I hope someone can explain how to fix/update this.
I type normal words and sometimes it changes them completely.
Earlier I was typing silly and it kept changing it to sully.
Did it 3 times in a row.
Things like that are annoying.
I came from Galaxy S6 Edge. I experience the same behavior with the keyboard as you describe. Annoying to say the least. Maybe it's time to install a different keyboard

I tried using the default Samsung Keyboard for a little while, but noticed the same issues. Switched back to GBoard and very happy. Not as "pretty" but it gets the job done much better. Biggest benefit is that all my words and such are stored in the cloud with GBoard, so when I switch to another phone (work phone) it still works just as well. AND, when I buy the Galaxy S9 it will work the same no matter what.
I've had similar frustrations with the keyboard. One particular example is when I type "Kara's" the keyboard changes to "Kara s". When I try to correct it, it changes to "Kara 's".
I also sometimes get two words that don't make sense when typing one longer word. I didn't have this issue with the S7 edge.
I have had the EXACT SAME PROBLEM! I'm about ready to throw this tho g though the wi die. SEE? UGH!
Gboard and SwiftKey are highly recommended.
I personally use SwiftKey because it has great prediction in non English languages (Romanian, in my case) and a lot of cool themes.

Sorry for bringing this back to life, but does anyone knows a solution to this issue? It seems to be affecting most common keyboards. In my case I use Swype. Switched from S7 to S8+ and Swype started failing to complete full words, starts creating spaces an nonsense constructions. I've been reading that Swiftkey is also having the same problem.
On the other hand Samsung Keyboard works fine but sucks at recognizing words properly. Thanks!
I'm having the exact problems. Came here to find a solution and saw your post first. Ive also deleted words so they don't come up, I get spaces and other times it won't space. Some words just do not show up unless I type them... I, too, use the swipe feature
Just use Gboard and problems solved. Honestly it's ridiculous.
So no real answer besides switch keyboards? Can you still swipe text on different keyboards?
Swiftkey is always the first app I install on a new phone (or after a factory reset). Just do it, make the switch. You will thank yourself.
Yes, Swiftkey does swipe (I don't use it).

I am having the same problems described above. I'm realizing that Samsung was not careful and thorough to test out it's product before launching sales.
They tell me I must go to Best Buy to have a "reflash" done to the software.
I am SO not the techie. I am becoming an android hater w/ this experience. I have already tried all the above suggestions.
If Best Buy can't help, I may take phone to the gun range for target practice.
