Desire HD data plan on AT&T? - Desire HD General

Hi folks,
I'm currently looking around for smartphones with 850/1900Mhz 3G that are not sold by AT&T, so that I can use them with the cheap $10 unlimited data plan on AT&T like I currently do with the Bell Galaxy S and Telus Milestone that you'll see in my signature.
I'm aware that AT&T already has the Inspire 4G, but I don't want that, because it requires the expensive, capped data plan instead of the cheap unlimited plan.
I know that this method works on the Telus Desire A8182. Can anyone tell me if this works on the Telus Desire HD A9192, or does AT&T have the full list of IMEI numbers and requires the expensive plan for even the Bell model? (this happened with the Xperia X10, folks using the Rogers model with cheap data on AT&T suddenly got bumped to the expensive plans as soon as AT&T carried the X10 themselves).
Thanks in advance I'd appreciate info from folks using both the A9192 or the A9191 on AT&T.

NOBODY using this phone on AT&T??

HTC desire hd data plan on AT&T
im using the desire hd unbranded on AT&T the unlimited 2g data plan it works well. you just need to have the APN setup for AT&T on your desire HD.

Thanks for that info. Can you tell me how your device shows up (what picture/name) in your online AT&T account?
I'm very curious if this applies to the A9192 as well (I presume you have A9191 right?)

I'm using the Telus version. With the correct APN, everything works perfectly.

Can I confirm that you are using this on AT&T with the cheap non-smartphone data plan and they haven't forced you to get one of the more pricey capped plans?

Actually, no. I'm using it with the unlimited (grandfathered) plan

Well how does it show up in AT&T's database? Does it show up as a smartphone, or could you actually use it with the dumbphone plan?

Well I am also curious if it has any impact on data plan and if we can use the A9191 Roms without bricking our A9192 phones?
I am so ready to move on from my craptivate. I have such a bitter taste about them that I won't even consider the Nexus S that is going to work on 3G in March.
Also the Desire HD brother that ATT just released is full of their usual bloatware and of course no source code to start making own roms.

Same here, all I get is 2G on the Unlimited Data plan. Wished I could be using the HSPDA line instead. But you get what you paid for. MY APN basically got set up by itself, flashed and using CM7. I guess ATT Signal for HSPDA is not on this one.

You probably have the wrong one. The one that launched on Telus (canada) has the right bands for AT&T, the EU one doesn't.
Funk, is your plan the unlimited smartphone one or the unlimited dumbphone one?

Yes I have A9191 and its just a blank picture on my account. When I called to activate I just said my phone is not US 3g capable.

Good to know...I'm really hoping it's the same deal with the A9192, my brother is probably gonna buy that phone

what was the outcome of this? did att put your brother on the capped data plan?

I have a Rogers branded HTC Magic 32A and I'm using the $15/mo unlimited data plan that I got several years ago to support my WM HP phone. I get 3g data HSDPA service. I'm looking to upgrade to HTC Inspire 4G/Desire HD and don't know what my options are. Anybody have any input?

Was anyone able to confirm if the A9192 uses the $10 data plan?

I'm pretty sure that the Desire HD will not be registered on ATT's smartphone and that you will be able to use it with the unlimited dumbphone plan. Just make sure that when you buy it, the HSDPA or 3G bands are 850/1900 and not any other bands.
The only reason why I'm not getting this phone is because of the 1230mAh battery life. I feel that this is way too short of a battery life and that it wouldn't be worth it coming from a 1450mAh battery on a Vibrant.
Edit: If you're seriously thinking about getting the HTC to work on ATT, I think you're better off getting the HTC Sensation 4G (Bell version) because it's more well rounded than the Desire HD. However, finding this exact phone might become a challenge because the HTC Sensation 4G is in US only for T-Mobile. You will need to find the Bell version for it to be up and working with ATT.

[Q] HD2 USA and AT&T

Hey I'm gonna buy a tmobile HD2 from a friend of mine and I want to know if it can be use with AT&T.
Also do I haave to get a data plan with this phone?
Yes it can be used with AT&T but you will not get 3G speeds due to the specific bands the phone has.
I have an international HD2 and am using it on AT&T without data plan because AT&T does not have the IMEI for my phone in their database and thus cannot automatically add the smartphone plan. I'm not sure if they have the T-Mobile HD2 IMEIs.
I too have an international HD2 and am runing it on AT&T. You can't use the T-Mobile US one - the bandwidth doesn't work on AT&T only an international version will work.
I was going to say the same thing they said
You can use an Australian HD2 with AT&T and get 3G speeds. Mine works just fine.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=633404
I am running an unlocked TmoUSA HD2 on AT&T and it works just fine. Other than the fact that I have no 3G with this on the AT&T network. I am very happy with the performance since I live in an area with no 3G coverage at all. I have to drive 15 miles to get into 3G coverage area.
Yeah Baaaby AT&T .... not!!
When in the hell is AT&T going to take expanding their 3G coverage areas seriously? I wonder what it feels like to be the AOL of the cellular world, all those customers and so little speed. This really sucks bigtime!

Do not put your AT&T sim card into a T-Mobile HD2. They will automatically "upgrade" your account to $30/month blackberry data. I had a $10/month unlimited that disappeared and I can't get it back now.

I used a T-Mobile HD2 for 5 months on AT&T without any problems except for no 3G. I used the $10mo data plan and still am. I now use a Telstra HD2 and enjoy full 3G coverage on AT&T. Both HD2's are unlocked and yes, the AT&T sim works fine. Just don't walk in to their store and expect them not to hammer you with the $30 data plan.
There's a real nice fellow from Australia that sold me my 2 HD2's. Very honest and reasonable. If you want his eBay ID, anyone can PM me and I will forward it. Beware of other internet store sellers! Some are selling the same phones for $100+ more and some people have been either screwed out of their money or have gotten refurb/used phones. Honesty is in short supply these days so be careful.
I unlock it... Just call T-mobile and ask for the pin that was yesterday and today got it by email.
Now the phone is for my girlfriend and I she doesn't have any data plan and she doesn't want any....Can this be done? have the phone without any data plan on AT&T?

if they happen to add it on there (by doing a maintenance sweep daily), give them a call and demand that they put DATA OPT-OUT on that line.
Thanks ill call before putting the don card in....I thought that it was mandatory with the phone.

It IS mandatory, that applies to ANY smartphone. Whatever you do, DO NOT tell them you are using any smartphones. iPhones are all in their database since they were the exclusive dealers for them so it's impossible (as far as I know) to use an iPhone on AT&T without them nailing you for a $30 data plan since all the IMEI's are pre-loaded in AT&T's system. At least with the HD2's and other non-AT&T branded smartphones, they don't have the IMEI's and can't just hit you with the data plan.
It's in their contract, any smartphone use requires a data plan. Of course, they also hit you for a tethering fee as well for the privilege of using tethering (computer to smartphone connection) even though there's nothing special about it nor does it use the data service any differently. Just another way for AT&T to stick it to the consumer.

[Q] mytouch 4g on simple mobile?

has anybody tried it? because i was thinking about doing it? hows the quality?
is the same thing thats what i use is like t mobile
If I remember correctly, they use essentially the same operating bands as T-Mobile (1700/2100 AWS), so your phone should be compatible with they SIM cards. In fact, they may even be using the same towers as T-Mobile.
However, might not be able to get HSPA+ speeds, but not sure since I haven't used them before.
Actually, it does get hspa. I am using the hd2 with the 2.2 froyo and it runs on close to 4g speeds and yes you can also use tethering and hotspot. great service!

Did you need to unlock the HD2 to work on Simple Mobile or did it just work. I have a HD2 with 2.2 but it is on T-mobile but I am thinking about switching to Simple Mobile.
Any help is greatly appreciated
My wife was recently deployed so we cancelled the mytouch 4g on tmo and they waved the $200 cancel. fee.
I have been reading on xda that several people use simple mobile with tmo phones, and their webpage says this phone is SUPPORTED. I called a local dealer today and was told that I did not have to UNLOCK the phone because its running on tmo when its on simple mobile.
He said people are NOT throttled unless they are tethering or downloading torrents/movies.
Do any of you use simple mobile? Specifically, do you use a mytouch 4g on simple mobile and would you recommend it. My understanding its rebranded tmo service.
I loved the mytouch 4g, but couldnt stomach the $83 a month. My current phone is a optimus v (sprint aka virgin for $60 a month unlimited everything) but why would I want to use this phone (which I can return as Ive had it less than 10 days, I have 30 days to return) when I have a 10x better phone my mytouch 4g...
Suggestions... comments? Complaints about simple mobile? Thanks!
Just a google search indicates that the throttling cap is being seen at the 2GB mark with Simply Wireless and that they throttle people who they find tethering or downloading torrents or movies.
On the phone, the only thing that shows up is H for 3G and 4G. It does differentiate it if you are rooted with CM7
So my phone doesn't have to be unlocked? Everytime i flash a new rom do i just set the Apn?

AFAIK you will get hsxpa but not hsxpa+
Hsxpa is faster than the 3g that most us carriers served up for years. Now its technically a moot point since hsxpa+ isnt 4g either and their all just enhancements on the 3g standard.

Atrix on "Dumb" phone plan

Can I use an messaging phone data plan with an off-contract AT&T brand Atrix? Or do I have to wait for an unlocked international version with the right bands?
I have used this "cheat" before with WinMo phones and T-mobile phones (for edge data) but I have not tried it with a branded Android. Has anyone else had success with something like this?
Will it work if I set the phone to only use 2G data? Thanks!
No. As soon as the imei hits the network a data plan will be added. You gotta pay to play.
i used a an Nokia N97 NAM for about 8 months on a "dumb" phone plan. Maybe the Bell version or UK version Atrix can be used on a "dumb" phone plan??
not going to happen with the atrix
i put my sim car in
att knows it within minutes
how do i know they know ? they got a picture of the atrix in my account under my device when i logged into att.com
the bell desire z is your best bet (fastest as well) with using a dumb phone plan without getting charge

If you use a phone that AT&T doesn't sell it'll likely work because they won't be able to identify the phone model from the IMEI. If you use a phone that they do sell, they'll catch it immediately.

HTC One X - Unlocked - Use on Virgin Mobile?

So I want to use the HTC One X and use it on the Virgin Mobile network. Would 4G/3G Work?
I would like to use international version, however I read it would not get 4G. Does VM get 4G yet?
What model would work on VM/Sprint with at least 3G speeds? I really would like a new phone so if none of these options work I would have to get the S3. But the One X is my ultimate choice, the tegra 3 version.
I mean they even have the One X for VM Australia, so essentially same damn phone = same network bands = full working?'
Found this on Google "Selling an HTC One X International edition (Quad Core, HSPA).Phone is already rooted. Unlocked, works on Bell, Telus, Rogers, Koodoo, Virgin, Fido"
Shed some light on this situation I'm in please!
Won't work on VM USA it is a CDMA network HTC one x is gsm

It's like trying to use an AM radio to pick up FM stations.
What if you just use a custom radio? I need as much information as possible my goal is to create an entire list of phones compatible and not compatible.
Virgin Mobile USA is owned by Sprint and uses CDMA technology, which means you can't stick SIM cards in there. VM in other countries uses GSM. Your options are to find a CDMA variant of the phone (Sprint phones work on VM IIRC) and use that or use a GSM carrier (T-Mobile/AT&T or prepaid MVNO).
Gsm phones are 100% incompatible with cdma

iphones are the creation of people with nowhere left to turn
Use straight talk buddy.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using xda app-developers app
Isn't straight talk crappy data? T-Mobile at least offers 5gb for $30/mo with 100 minutes talk.
Straight Talk uses either AT&T's network or T-Mobile (on the GSM side, not sure if they rebrand any CDMA carriers)
If you go with an AT& T SIM (still straight talk it just uses AT& T's network) you will be throttled after 2GB (or so)
If you go with the T-Mobile SIM (same deal as above) the throttling isn't as severe or the caps as low....still Straight Talk can (and has) thrown people off of their network with no refunds....
I wouldn't recommend them.
It does have the lowest monthly fee of all the MVNOs that include UNLIMITED MINUTES/TEXTS though.
(T-Mobile has a lower priced plan at $30 that ONLY offers 100 minutes)

Changing carriers

Hi, XDA
Needed a little help currently here in the good old U.S.A and on verizon wireless i am thinking about switching carriers one reason is my phone of choice is the Htc One, also thinking of switching because of the things that i can do on some of the other networks here in the states like talk and surf at the same time not only on 4g lte but also on 3g hspa+, which is another thing that i liked because if im in an area that 4g lte is not available i can fall back on hspa+ which is faster than verizon cdma 3g network that tops out at 1.5-2mb down and .4mb up.
The reason why i am holding on to verizon is that I have unlimited data no throttling or data overages and I am planning to buy my phones at full retail to keep me out of contracts with these companies and also keep my unlimited data because i use alot of data i mean 8gb a month avaerage over 4months i guess if i stay with verizon i would have to settle for the samsung plastic s4 or wait for the google x phone. just want to hear some opinions or advice thanks in advance.
Sprint is your only option for unlimited data. They don't have HSPA, but are substantially cheaper than Verizon.
I just switched from Verizon to ATT yesterday coming from Unlimited as well.
I switched mainly because of the lack of service in my area of work and lack of availability of phones. Does going from Unlimited to 5Ggb suck, yes, but I also have service where I work and will be able to get the beloved HTC One. I'll just need to keep an eye on my usage from now on.
I pay $10 for every GB I go over which doesn't sound too bad to me.

When my unlocked HTC One arrives I will trim the sim and use it.
I'm joining my fiance's AT&T plan here in NY, there data for two lines isn't horrible. $150 for Unlimited Talk/Text and 4GB shared data for $150 for a few business/pleasure phones isn't too bad, she's paying $100 a month for her non-smartphone though, ****ing crazy!
