Dust under screen fixed, now white is dirty white and backlight bleeding! - EVO 4G General

Just got back from the Sprint store. Told the lady my issue which was dust under the screen (my phone did have the screen separation issue) which I mentioned and she said was cosmetic and couldn't do anything about but we can clean the dust out for you. Left my phone went to do some thing came back 45minutes later and got my phone back. They told me they had to replace the screen so I was like oh cool no dust plus fixed screen separation issue!
But . . . . . .
Now there is bleeding from the backlight just above the Home/Menu/Back/Search buttons. The screen has a very noticeable white glow about half a inch or more up. The white is no longer white (like the text message menu) its a dirty white, except the lower portion where the bleeding is at.
Well theres my rant, any options, advice, or anything else please feel free to let me know!

Take it back give them a ***** session, If they fail to fix call Sprint speak to retentions see if they can do anything 4 ya

LOL! Welcome to the club. Had dust under screen... took it to local store... they replaced screen with one that was all scratched and nicked on edges... I *****ed and had them put my old one back... they said I needed to call Sprint for replacement... I did... got them to send me a replacement... replacement arrived with camera and kickstand all scratched up... *****ed and had them send me new replacement... replacement arrived yesterday all scratched up on the sides... *****ed and had them send me new replacement... they said I have to go through store... I told them I don't have time to keep doing this... asked them to transfer me to retentions... lady was useless and told me there was nothing they could do... I hung up and will most likely switch to T-Mobile when the 4 other lines on my contract ends in April.
I'm just done with this non-sense. Sprint thinks that because it is the cheapest carrier, they can do these things as we'll most likely not switch... well, they just lost a $300+/mo customer here.

OHHH, that would have pissed me off... I wouldnt pay my bill and file a complaint with the Sec. of State against them. lol
As far as the OP goes, yeah I would take it in to them and tell them if they don't fix it the right way - you will file a comaplaint against the store and will not be paying any part of the bill untill its correctly taken care of

Well long story short its fixed. They replaced the screen yet again and everything is as crisp as it was before, no dust under screen. There doesn't appear to be any screen separation but if I push on the screen I can reveal more of that edge on the inside but the screen is not above the edge of the phone but almost flush with it.
I think it depends on the store maybe, this place has been a headache but also a blessing, doing wayyyy more than any other sprint store I have been to and I've been to A LOT lol.
The guy even asked me if it was "rooted" and I was like ummm I don't know? Maybe? He chuckles and says oh I was just wondering cause it had that rooted look. Then he said you know you can make it run at 1200 (which I'm assuming processor speed is what he meant) and I said ya I know but its already fast enough. I couldn't tell if they cared if it was rooted or if he was just curious.

Sprints tech support told my friend he should root his phone because the Roms people put out are easier to fix problems on then stock ones.

I just had a experience with sprint myself which was horrible and I am still going through it. I had my screen replaced and they left all the screws out of my phone. When I realize it, I went back to the store to tell them and they replaced the screws. I realized then my screen was full of dust. The manager was a complete ass and would not do anything. Then he said he could fix it. They had the phone for an hour and come to find out. All they did was blow th dust even further down into the screen. The dumb asses used a spray gun and put the air through the 3.5mm hole. The problem with that is that is where the dust is getting in.
I called retention and they want me to go to another store to get the run around again. I also got them to confirm the upcoming changes with the perks for yearly upgrades. It's a great day at sprint today. Anyway, I am now back in the same situation with screen full of dust and nobody willing to do anything to fix it. They want me to go to another store but I refuse to burn my gas to deal with another crappy store.

I said the same thing. I don't have time to keep trying out different stores. They refuse to do anything about it though. I'm running out of options. I want a new phone or a refurb in good condition. It's not much for someone who pays over $300 monthly to them.

Well I bit the bullet and got off my ass and went to another store. I got the screen replaced in less than 15 minutes. The guy pulled up the retention notes and fixed it immediatlely. It's sad I had to resort to literally a 45 minute conversation with retention to get this to happen. I have to find a way to block the opening on these phones. The 3.5 mm opening should have been on the side or dare I say the bottom. I know some people don't like that.

Looks like I’m not the only one with the same problem. My EVO was six months old and died to the point it wouldn’t even power up (no phone) insurance. So they ordered a replacement, this one has light leak everywhere, dinged up speaker phone and couple of dust specks, plus old battery. So I said I want another one. So week later I got another one. Holy ****, the second one was even worse then the first replacement. Light leak everywhere, bunch of dust in left lower corner, dinged up housing. I did not accepted that replacement. Called Sprint and they said they have no authority to tell the store to order me a new one and told me to talk to the store manager (like that will do anything) because they said it’s a cosmetic issue. What pisses me the most is that the warranty on refab. is only 30 DAYS. HTC/ Sprint doesn’t extend warranty to the end of the first unit. This is a total bull****. I lost 6 month of manufacturing warranty. Looks like HTC doesn’t stand for there product like Apple does. I never had those problems with exchanging Iphone’s. Warranty was always extended to the end of the original unit and you couldn’t tell that was a refab. or a brand new unit.

Having Evo Issues? Sprint will exchange!!

This may have been discussed before but I just wanted to inform you guys on my experience.
So I purchased my EVO 6/16 and I absolutely loved it!! At first glance it was everything I expected an more. I looked a little closer at the device and I noticed quite a bit of things
1) Screen was not properly seated
2) Battery life was somewhat suspect (even with NO task manager and NO syncing)
3) a bit jittery when swiping from one screen to another (compared to that of replacement and my Nexus One)
4) Random buttons seemed to have been activated when pressing the power button (mostly the camera button)
5) Screen responsiveness was a bit off
So the above issues were just a few I noticed from my OLD EVO. Now this may be somewhat of an "Placebo Effect" of getting a new Evo. The phone they gave me today feels a bit different. Both phones has the Build (003) I jotted down all of the numbers I could and nothing seems different as far as build is concerned, however we all know quality control in different batches can vary from time to time but not by much (or at least shouldn't)
REVIEW OF EVO I RECEIVED 6/22 FROM SPRINT:
I went to the Sprint store on Monday 6/21, to exchange my OLD Evo because I was a lil disappointed with the above issues they inspected the device and said you are right the screen is not seated correctly. Of course the screen responsiveness worked perfectly for the rep lol. The manager came out and said he'd put me on the waiting list and I'd receive a new one as soon as they came in. I got a call less then 24-hrs later stating they had some in. So of course I jumped for joy dropped my son off at daycare and went to the sprint store to grab another Evo. It took about an hr because of the amount of people up there. I handed over my old Evo and got a new Evo. I asked to hold both in my hand because I read somewhere were a sprint rep tried to act like he exchanged a phone and changed all the stickers inside to make it seem like it was a new phone. So after I looked carefully at the numbers I had written down I held both in my hand and compared the screens. Rubbing my fingers on both screens on the left hand corner and side. As to no ones surprise what do you think happened!! DUH, the damn screen was coming up and the manager says, "WHAT THE HELL". So of course I get the new Evo and I get a brand new charger and kept my old one for my troubles per Manager.
So while keeping the above issues in mind, the new devices is showing absolutely NO light leakage and when I say NONE I mean NONE! No left corner. NO leakage above the 4 soft buttons, no nothing! Phone seems very responsive to every touch where you barely have to tap the button and it'll activate. This may be caused by the screen being properly seated unlike the previous one I had. Battery is still suspect however that is something I am willing to live with because I know what the phone can do and what it takes to perform those task. If anyone has any additional questions please PM me or ask here.
I know this is pretty lengthy but I really need to start giving back to XDA because, indirectly, you guys have done so much for me.
There all different
I called the Sprint store where I bought my phone, just a moment ago, and told them about how my screen is also starting to come up, you can see light around the edges of the phone, as if the screen is comming up and letting light out. not only that but even when I turn the phone off, and its real dark, I can see light underneath the soft keys, NOTHING IS TURNED ON THERE SHOULD BE NO LIGHT ON WHEN THE PHONE IS OFF!!! ya, kinda had to get that through to someone. anyway he told me to call a "repair" center, (which hes an idiot for telling me this) and that theyd have to "Diagnose it" - Or, "Look at it all bug eyed and say, HMMM.. a couple times, or Yup..." and tell me I need to replace it. Or what also might suck, is I dropped it a few days ago, from like 2 feet, didn't throw it, slam it, it was just a light drop. So there are a few chips around the edges of the phone, wounder if theyll try to tell me thats why its happening, even though it was doing this 3 days after I bought it. June 5th, so anyways I ended up calling the repair store before truckin over there, and they told me "No, you take it back to where you bought it, You dont want it repaired you want it Exchanged!
Hmmm.... Interesting, I could have sworn I told the other dude that! I know nothing Great Sprint Masta! So anyway they told me theyd have a shipment in tomorrow, and that No, I cannot get on a list nor could they "order" me one. Wounder if theyll be there tomorrow.

Complete BS. I can tell you from experience that the Sprint employees at the stores know pretty much nothing about anything.
Call Sprint's hotline directly and explain your situation. They should be able to order one for you and have it shipped directly to your address. That's how I got my EVO in the first place. When every store was sold out and it was no longer available online, all I had to do was call in and they ordered it and sent it out next day.

Yeah that is certainly a step you can take. If the store is unable to assist thats just more fuel to take with you when you call Sprint and let them know how you were treated in the store. Bet you'll have a new Evo by Friday lol.

I did call the hotline, I dialed *2 and talked to a fella and he told me the same, just take it up to the one that I bought it at and have them exchange it. I guess they play favorites.
Ya, I called em again, they told me all I can do is have them hold one, IF they have any, I think I'm just talkin to the wrong people about this. thanks for the input.
I bought mine from Radio Shack.
Do I need to deal with them to try to exchange mine, or can/should I just take it to a Sprint store directly and see if they will exchange it there?
Also, I've heard/read that HTC has pulled all the EVO's and is "fixing" the assembly line and expects to have "fixed" units available soon.
Assuming this is true (yes, I know), do you think they will replace the "defective" units after the 30 days, based on the 1 yr mfr warranty?
Or do I need to push for a replacement before July 3?
?????
okay heres what im understanding so far, sprint will replace/exchange my evo if it has light leakage or/and glass separation? please correct me if im wrong, so when i go to my local sprint store i wont look like a fool

+1... Im in the same boat.
Sprint online order center told me that for the glass separation n light leaking I should get a replacement from sprint dot com (being the place I got my phone from) n that going to a local repair store would only mean I get a refurbished evo the rep said "if you paid for anew device n its defective you should naturally want a new replacement not a refurbished unit" so I agreed the phone is still out of stock at sprint dot com n as soon as it goes in stock I was told to call them n demand my new replacement. Further more the rep said even if I go past my 30 day limit n the device is still not in stock that I will not pl pay for anything because it was defective to begin with.
I went to a sprint repair center and the guy told me it is a normal thing for the phone to have a light leak and that the glass was normal. He said he has a Evo too and his is doing the same thing. I showed him how my glass is up and does not have an edge like the other side of the phone and he said that the phone is fine... WHAT THE HECK... no it isn't! It has lifted some since I bought it.
All 3 of ours are having the glass problem and mine has a half blown speaker. Sprint said to take it into a corp store so they could put a note on the account, so I did, but sprint.com is still out so I can't replace them.
Another week and a half and I'll be getting close to the 30 day mark. I hope I get some working ones by then!
I know it is not normal for the phone to be glowing in the dark...

Coming from having 2 faulty Heros and having to deal with CS, your best bet is to use *2. Lately Sprint's CS has been amazing after horrible reviews. Let them know your problem and they will take care of it. I have had 2 different options. Either have Sprint overnight me a replacement phone. Or have them note my account and I go to the local Sprint store to have it replaced. Both have worked flawlessly.

Once you go into the store and speak with a manager politely ask him when your 30 day satisfaction guarentee started. Its unfortunate that you have to mention it but I am sure once he see that you are still within your trial that will light some fire under his a$$. Not only will he think he'll lose a new client but a new client that bought an EVO. Should work...
i'm not sure if i want to wait for the software patch for the screen since some people aren't having the issue. It won't fix the screen lifting issue anyway. Mine is very slightly raised at the bottom barely noticable but i'm woried that it will get worse over time.
I also purchased mine at Radio Shack and am wondering if I need to exchange it there or go to a sprint store.

Broken LCD screen

So yesterday 9/26 I'm at work with my streak secured in my pocket. Did only 2 things stand up and sit down for the first 4 hours i've been at work. Usually checking my phone every second I get because I love looking at it and the responses I get from passersby.
this day I did not take it out until my first break and I had a BIG surprise installed for me. Screen was white on one side and black on the other. WTF!!!
Second glance the screen is cracked into a V from the bottom middle. So all my coworkers are feeling my pain and asking what's going to happen now.
I called Dell immediately and advised the rep that my phone is LCD screen is cracked but the Gorilla is fine (she laughed). She said I'm out of my "30 day don't ask don't tell" replacement warranty. So WTF... She put in a ticket to get me a replacement by Mon or Tues. I'm "patiently" waiting right now.
Good new then Bad news and worse news... Replacement will be sent (good). If you wanted to repair your phone unfortunately it in Hungary (bad). Replacement will be done, however, if deemed by the warehouse that it was broken by carelessness then I will have to pay out of pocket for the replacement (which by the way is a refurbished).
So what the HELL folks. What should I do? take the chance with taking their replacement and they say it's my fault (and it's not phone NEVER seen the floor) and possibly having to front another $550 or find a way to repair it?
Sam thing happened with mine. broke in my pocket while standing up. I knew when it happened cause i heard a little click that sounded like plastic. I was inside my 30 day warranty period and just returned it. For me it comes as a phone first so i need to be able to have the device in my pocket. If it just has the lcd broken they wont deem it your fault. If there is any external damage then they will say it was your own fault. I say send it back. The worst that will happen is they will say you need to pa for it. If they $550 for a refurb say no and just buy a brand new one again if so choose. Or buy something else like the captivate. While i certainly miss the 5" screen, The 4" screen of the captivate doesnt really take a whole lot a way. Although the Captivates GPS doesnt work worth a ****. Miss that the most from my streak.

Well I got my phone today and its NEW!!!... quick service I like that. Just waiting for my return label. And I was thinking the same thing if there's no damage to the exterior of the phone how could it be my fault.
I can NEVER go back to a 4inch screen. Just too small LOL. Especially after all the crap I talk to everyone else and their phones I have to strike back with the Streak.
As for the Captivate... Hmmm IDK.. I don't too much like it. Might go with the Vibrant or HTC HD7 and put Android on it once XDA figures it out. DUAL Boot.
But thanks for the advice.... Oh yeah.. why don't you have the streak anymore?
personally mine slips into my suit jacket fine, never bother placing it in my trouser pocket. (yup trousers not pants only superheroes where their underwear ontop!)
glad you got it replaced tho, best to find a suitable case i suppose.

White EVO paint chipping

Anyone else having a problem with the white paint chipping off the white EVO?
I noticed around the edges of the rear frame the paint is starting to come off revealing the red plastic underneath. I called several Sprint stores none of them carry the actual white parts for the EVO, One tech suggested I buy the parts on ebay and install them myself, Another tech wanted to charge me $35 just to look at the phone and then decide whether or not to file a warranty claim for the EVO.
Does any of this sound right? I have only been with Sprint for a few months.

I would just pull the back off the phone and repaint it. You could actually paint it any color you want. I'm actually going to paint my otterbox so the wife and I can tell the difference between our phones(we both have EVO's with the same style otterbox.

A store once told me to go buy a stylus for my Treo at Radio Shack when mine broke.
I called Executive Escalations and explained the situation, had a stylus overnight and as far as I was told the store was reprimanded.
Don't take their BS.

I'm trying to be a nice guy, I don't want to escalate anything if I don't have to, I will if it's necessary. So far it seems the Sprint at the stores are not even prepared for working on the white EVO, They don't even carry the parts....
I've had nothing but good experiences with the sprint repair centres. Took my phone in last week cause the speaker sounded bad, they replaced the whole back half of the phone, free, no questions asked in about 10 minutes, they didn't even mention the fact my phone said "freshhh" when it booted up lol.
I brought my microUSB cable in as well because the end bent and it stopped charging the phone. I figured its my fault, they'll sell me a new one but he just grabbed me a new one and off I went, great experience.
This week my GPS stopped working so back I went, they looked at it and ordered me a new phone, again no questions asked, no charge.
So I would say go to a different sprint store. Everyone complains about Sprints customer service but I've had nothing but good experience.

I don't think it so much a customer service issue, As it's just that they are not
prepared to repair the White EVO. I only have a handful of Sprint Stores in my area, So far everyone I have talked to has not been much help. The last thing I want to is drive even farther to get the same answer.
i have the white evo and the paint chips and its orange. its annoying =(
Ummmm ummmm yea.....i don't know what to tell you...I'm confused by this thread and its meaning for creation. You probably are upset but I would suggest painting it yourself maybe?

Id like to see some finished results of the battery cover and the piece underneath the front benzel painted some different colors before i go doing my own. I own a black evo so I don't even know if painting would even be an option. Still, I'd like to see.
Sprint stores don't have stock for any white parts yet, so there's nothing that can be done. Though, even if there were parts, paint is considered cosmetic damage, and not covered. You also have to remember that stores are JUST getting stock of the white EVOs, for sale in a few days. Many have never even SEEN a white one in person.
That being said, as much as I love the look of the white, I've seen the paint chipping too often to get one. Sad.
haha.. i traded out my white evo for a black one for this reason

Digitizer Replacement saga- I bet this is how all refurbs are done

Earlier this year I got an Evo (HW 004, Epson screen) off eBay, no contract, no TEP, no ERP, and have used it pretty hard for a few months now. I have already cracked and replaced the camera lens glass cover disc of glass thingie with a kit also bought on eBay, so when the digitizer started getting progressively worse in recent days I basically said fine I'm perfectly willing to go DIY again.
Everyone says just replace the LCD screen and digitizer together as a unit so you don't fiddle around separating the bad digitizer from the good LCD screen and all that adhesive drama. Let's say approx $30 for just the digitizer, $80 for both, these days. To me, if the phone costs $2000 to own over two years, I don't really care about a few bucks here and there, so either method would work for me.
But while researching this issue on XDA I found quite a few people who persuaded either Sprint ($35) or HTC ($6 S&H) to do it for them.
So I figured why not drop in to the nearest Authorized Sprint Repair Center which happens to be very near where I live.
I get to the repair tech window and tell the guy I'm just asking him for advice. I say right up front this phone is rooted, I got it off eBay, I got no insurance of any kind etc. I just ask him what are my options?
He offers to replace both digitizer and LCD screen for $35. On the spot. Only I'll have to pay in cash because "their computers are down".
I say right on let's rock. His methodology is very straightforward. In plain view of God and everyone he just turns around to the counter behind him and starts rooting through all the returned phones lying around (they're all in these big envelopes, like in the old days of processing rolls of film, yeah i know lol I'm that old whatever) until he finds an Evo that he knows he saw earlier. I guess he's assuming that the Evo he's cannibalizing wasn't being returned because of a faulty digitizer or screen. Real master of probability theory, this guy.
He determines that the screen on whatever Evo he came up with has "the narrow cable" and then he cracks mine open (in like four seconds- I'm pretty sure I would have spent a good 30 minutes making sweet love to my phone with a pry tool to get to the same point- maybe DIY is not really such a bargain after all if your time is worth anything) and determines mine has "the fat cable". So no donor match for me. He puts it back together, hands it back and says to come back tomorrow because he just got ten new Evo's in from the factory for customers who have been waiting to get their phones back. Once they have returned to the store to pick up their replacements he'll have plenty of Evos to work with. He figures at least two of them will have "the fat cable".
I imagine this is how refurbs are done in general: Find out what the customer is complaining about, grab the relevant parts from a phone that a *different* customer was complaining about, and hope they weren't complaining about the same thing.
Given the circumstances (rooted phone bought off ebay) and the fact that he wanted you to pay cash because the "computers were down" I have a feeling this might not be how all repairs are handled... probably just the ones that are done "off the books" by that particular repair guy.
Pretty sure this is how they handle the repairs. I had my screen replaced once, and got it back with a crack by the volume buttons and power button. When I confronted the tech, he told me the screens are not new, but "harvested parts".
I had the same thing done to my phone. I had the "B spot" on my original HW003 and he replaced it with a used screen, which had another small white blotch in the screen. About 2 weeks later he received a brand new screen from HTC and put it on my phone. Been running that screen ever since.

Same thing happened to me when I was going through my "refurb phase" trying to get a decent replacement. Sprint sent me a refurb that the screen was cracked out of the package. I took it to the store, the guy ripped it open in about 5 seconds, rummaged around a box of spare evo parts, and put a new screen on it. He gave it back to me 5 minutes later. This new screen was scratched to hell, the bezel around the screen was scratched to hell from him ripping the phone open, and the volume keys didnt work, I assume because he didnt put it together correctly. He told me that's how they do it, and that even though the "new" screen he put on had scratches, to sprint that was considered a new screen. It then took me about 4 hours arguing with the manager and on the phone with retentions to get them to get me another device.
Well, I went back to the guy for the replacement, and at the end of it all, either things got a whole lot shadier or a whole lot *less* shady, I can't tell: after he did the job (10 minutes, while-u-wait), he then wrote down my phone #, MEID and IMSI on a post it note before he gave me the phone back.
But there are a few things he said that make me think I misjudged the guy, like how I might receive a call from Sprint asking if I was satisfied with their customer service etc, how he does actually test the screen before he puts it in to make sure he's not swapping out one bad screen with another, and of course the post-it note ritual itself.
Of course this time there were other customers present, so maybe that was all for show and the post it note just went straight to the bottom of a trash can somewhere.
Anyways I paid in cash as previously arranged and walked out the door one happy person. What he did afterwards I don't know, and hopefully won't ever need to care.
Bottom line, digitizer is replaced (and as a nice side effect i no longer have to live with a couple pretty deep scratches on the old glass, even if the bezel is a little more nicked up than my old one), and the phone has never worked better.
[EDIT : just got a series of automated questions from Sprint via SMS asking about my experience. So I guess this all turned out to be more legit than I had initially suspected...]
Very nice! Glad to see you got a legit operation. As you know, I am in similar process. Getting screen replaced.

He used your phone information to put in a trouble ticket with Sprint to show that he did the repair. Standard stuff.

Screen Coating Worn Off?

Please take a look at the photos I attached. I noticed the wear a week ago, but just getting around to posting this now.
I have always kept my phones in my left jeans front pocket. Since the Galaxy S7, I've worn the same jeans (Don't hate! Love my naturally worn faded denims). Anyways, no issues with the screen on the Galaxy S7. Fast forward to now with the Galaxy S8, I received it on release day, and now have a smudge mark that won't go away. I did some investigating, and where the mark is on the screen matches up to a seem in the pocket. So after weeks of putting it my pocket and walking around, the seem in the pocket appears to have rubbed whatever coating on the S8 screen off in that particular location. Something the S7 never had an issue with.
Any thoughts? Is it repairable?
Maybe a warranty issue with Samsung? Sorry to see that.

Just got off the phone with T-Mobile. I've got to bring in the device to a store for them to determine if it's a manufacturer defect or my fault.
Strange things is, using a microfiber cloth removes the smudge, but after I rub it with my fingers for a few seconds or water gets on it, it appears. Which leads me to believe it is the oleophobic coating that wasn't applied right.

I'd agree with your assessment good luck. Still frustrating.

It's the oleophobic coating that has been worn off. If you look on Amazon there are some repair kits that work to repair it but they only last for a couple months. Same thing happened with my Note 4. If you get a screen protector it will mask the wear. For some reason I've only had this happen with Samsung phones so I assume they either skimp on the amount or quality of the coating coming from the factory. I always use a screen protector not just for scratches but because of this exact issue.

UPDATE:
Last night I called T-Mobile and spoke to customer service. They said I would need to bring it into the store for them to look before exchanging for a new device. The manager at the store immediately said I need to go through Samsung. I left and called T-Mobile again just to make sure, and customer service said yes, I would need to go through Samsung. So I spoke to Samsung and had my ticket raised to various departments and no one really had any clue as to what the problem was. Finally reached a rep that said they would repair it, but I would need to send it in, and no ETA for return and no phone replacement while mine was getting "fixed". So I hung up and called T-Mobile one last time. I spent 30 minutes on the phone describing the coating issue, and I said I would like a replacement under warranty. I was placed on hold for a few minutes, and he came back on and said they will send me a new phone under warranty (NOT insurance! Always double check!).
So, that's taken care of now, but what a hassle.

Thank you for the thread. I have the exact same issue, in nearly the same spot. A cloth rubs it off, but if you get any moisture in that area, it comes right back into being. I bought direct through Samsung so its likely to be a PITA to get it fixed.
