So no Snapdragon = no Netflix app for Xoom? - Xoom General

With all the new Honeycomb tablets and the majority of them being Tegra 2 based, is it really possible a Netflix app will not be made available to devices with non Qualcomm Snapdragon processors? I'm hoping this really is just a "Qualcomm first, Tegra 2 to follow" scenario. There will be a lot of upset Xoom (and other new tablet) owners if thats the case.

Well as I understand it.. it is a DRM issue. So the question is does Tegra have the DRM capabilities to satisfy the wanktards in Hollywood.

Nothing is stopping us from side-loading. Though since they are using some hardware level DRM stuff.. it is reasonable to assume it wont work on non-snapdragons unless the DRM can be fully bypassed.

It's a valid point in this thread. I'm a big Netflix fan and if the Xoom doesn't support the DRM requirements, it may drive some buyers towards other devices... However, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 has the Tegra 2 as well.
Would really stink if we could only watch Netflix on our snapdragon cell phones, but not our $800 tablets.

It would be nice if Nvidia would come out and clarify whether or not this will be supported, considering that this applies not only to tablets, but a mass of upcoming phones as well.
As a side note: I'm surprised. I thought WP7 phones had Netflix support, and aren't they running on current-generation Snapdragon processors, or is this not the case?

Agreed. This is my current dilemma. I was hoping to lay in bed streaming Netflix WI to my Xoom, not to my EVO. Now do I wait for a snapdragon tablet instead? For some people a Netflix app isnt a big deal, but I dont have cable and I stream everything over my media center pc. So I was really counting on a Netflix app. Grrrr.

They're practically partners with Netflix being that NFLX uses Micrsoft Silverlight tech for streaming. Assbags.

deal breaker for me. I travel a lot and want to stream tv episodes to my Xoom...

Do you think other streaming services...like MLB.TV will do the same thing? Those two apps are MUST haves for me especially on a tablet

According to Apple's new subscription service requirements, Netflix will have to be 'purchased' through the app store, so Apple can take their 30%. I doubt Netflix is going to let this happen, and may pull the app like others are threatening, such as Audible.

DRM is built into Honeycomb so any app can utilize it.
2.3 and earlier OS don't have this so they require a hardware fix.

That's some good information. It would help explain why the Xoom and Tab 10.1 are Tegra 2 based. I hope Netflix gets something out soon.

Netflix is a boon to Android. But do they even have much in the way of TV? I got rid of netflix 6 months ago because I found their TV library to be incomplete. Certain shows were missing early seasons, and whole shows I figured they would have were missing. I also have that complaint about HULU. I wanted to watch Star Trek TNG one day when I was bored, and instead had to discover Babylon 5. I only watched it because I was REALLY bored and heard about it on The Big Bang Theory. B5 was meh.

The DRM SDK in Honeycomb is used so developers can interact with the hardware DRM generically.
I thought Honeycomb could support Netflix, but I think that is only a development interaction layer.
I hope I'm wrong.

Honeycomb DRM
It would make sense that Tegra 2 has some sort of DRM solution, because Google basically built Honeycomb on the Xoom. They would need some hardware there to test the DRM framework. Although, this statement is 100% speculation.

I did a quick check on the Tegra 2 specs and I didn't see any DRM reference. I'm also getting the Thunderbolt and the Snapdragon specs for the phone does have DRM referenced.
It would be nice to see a DRM official reference/screenshot to the chipset the Xoom has.

I couldnt care less about netfliz coming to android as i have it on my ipod touch and i tether to my epic all the time. As for hulu the ios version apparently you have to pay for a subscription, kinda sucks, ill just use the free hulu apk on here,
However netflix would look nice on my 4inch SAMOLED Screen compared to the much smaller ipod touch retina...
I honestly can't wait for either of these apps as I have subscriptions to both. I use HULU for Family Guy, Bones, Greys Anatomy etc. I use Netflix for movies and Spartacus. AWESOME!
If were gonna get Netflix on our Epics, it's gonna have to be a hacked version as they don't plan on releasing it to the Android market. It will be part of the carrier crapware on second gen Snapdragon devices. It's pre-installed on the LG Revolution, at least it was on one a CES. They believe that the fragmentation of Android makes it too difficult to implement a DRM solution across all devices.

Netflix would be awesome!
Netflix confirmed that they would develop for Snapdragon first. Another black eye for Galaxy S phones. Not that Samsung would even want Netflix competing with MediaHub, anyway.
I got rid of them also when they raised prices. I bought a Slingbox pro and got the sling player app and man I can't believe it took me this long to get this. It is pretty awesome and works very good even on 3g. I wonder if netflix will work well on 3g, but unless they start getting better releases you can stream it was a waste for me. With 4 HD DVR's from Directv and expanded storage on them all with Multi-room viewing the sling box and sling player is just amazing. Oops this is not a slingbox Dtv thread sorry
I'm definitely looking forward to Netflix on Android.
Looking forward to netflix, but there is no hurry like i said earlier, cause i stream it from my phone to my ip0d touch (wireless tether).
As for hulu app, i dont want to pay for hulu plus like the ipod touch version, glad there is the free mod in the development section.

Thank you for reminding me that it existed.
For those interested in streaming, I bought a Roku (you can get as cheap as $59.00), and I stream that through another port on my slingbox. So I have my DirecTV box and my Roku both streaming to my Android.
I am considering getting a Hulu subscription, then I can stream movies and Hulu from my phone (plus can play them on my PS3 and Wii).
Thanks for confirming. I thought I was delusional about the price change. I still love Netflix. I was thinking about it the other night. I don't have cable tv. I use Hulu for free, Netflix for streams as well as other websites. But I was thinking I could illegally download certain tv eps. Though it's really nice to just know they're there. Just as I was talking to my girlfriend yesterday because we've been having financial issues and I said how much do you think you spend average on Redbox. She says about 20. I said well lets get Netflix switched back on. It has been canceled currently because my debit was stolen. Really sucked. Carry zipped and chained wallets!
+1 on Netflix and Hulu
It always cracks me up to read about "Netflix not on Android yet" with the 2-3 NETFLIX ADs on every page, all over the xda Forums. like a little twist of the NetFlix Knife
I for one use netflix all the time. I watch it while im at work during downtime. and on the road would be great especially for road trips. the streaming is amazing on home pc or through the ps3. can you imagine this on out phone and even the tabs?

Qualcomm promises Netflix support on 'future Android devices' with Snapdragon

http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/14/qualcomm-promises-netflix-streaming-support-on-future-android-d/
Qualcomm has apparently figured out what it takes to get Netflix on Android, announcing "future devices" with its Snapdragon mobile processors (like the LG Revolution) will meet all of the DRM requirements for Watch Instantly. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to bode well for your existing Android device, but at least future phones won't have to look on Windows Phone 7 and iOS with envy. Besides a turnkey package for manufacturers to support Netflix in their devices, it also promises plenty of dedicated decoding power to enhance battery life and improve picture quality which can be observed as it demos the Netflix app (hope they brought their own proxy) at Mobile World Congress this week.

This may actually be a marketing decision to entice people to move into new devices. Faster phones should be able to run a netflix app without too much trouble. If a friggin iPhone can of course an EVO/EPIC can. Rooting is your friend on for dealing with these types of announcements.

NetFlix will be probably be released on a device-by-device basis as they figure out how design their software around protecting those who have the means to protect themselves
Netflix is kind of a must have app for me in my personal usage. I like to use it while on break at work. I have an iPad and I had an iP4 until pretty recently and they both play Netflix and Hulu really well. I have an Atrix now and love it, but no Netflix kinda sucks. I want to get a Xoom and give my gf the iPad but I want some Netflix action. If the lapdock dock for the Atrix wasn't so overpriced I'd pull the trigger on that because it will at least work with Hulu's normal site.

My question is what does this mean:
Pluggable DRM framework
Android 3.0 includes an extensible DRM framework that lets applications manage protected content according to a variety of DRM mechanisms that may be available on the device. For application developers, the framework API offers an consistent, unified API that simplifies the management of protected content, regardless of the underlying DRM engines.
And how would that affect/help Netflix
With the recent changes to Apple's subscription requirements, doesn't Netflix now have to offer a subscription for the same price or less in the itunes store? Since Apple takes 30% of all those purchases, I wonder how long it's going to take until Netflix gets pulled from iOS entirely.
I'm pretty sure the only reason we don't have netflix is because of Dalvik. It's incredibly hard to obfuscate your code enough to stop people from figuring out how you're decrypting the video stream. Now that processors are coming out with security features built in, they won't have to worry about that....
That's my thought anyway.

The sad thing is that all the delays are related to the DRM protecting the movies on Netflix, which are all readily downloadable all over the internet in higher quality long before they ever hit Netflix instant watch. It's like they're wasting their time for no real good reason.
And to make things more sad, the unavailability on our Android devices is probably going to lead some people to piracy as a way of getting content on their devices. They're shooting themselves in the foot.

Did he say what exactly is wrong with Android DRM support? Software or hardware components?
Because Tegra 2 based tablets running GB kind of have it and can play Netflix no problem. I can assume that this is luck of HC software libs.
So, older versions of Android have it and newer don't? Sounds like BS and all this talks become really annoying
Netflix points finger to Samsung/Motorola, manufacturers to Google... all in all shows how they really care about us - paying customers.
Why spend $500.00 on newest HC tablet if it cannot do what $250.00 one can and why should we care who's fault this is.
I've had Netflix working on my rooted Captivate for a few months now.
I used this thread for the file: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1076150
...and I can't find it at the moment, but another thread that directed me to download ES File Explorer, edit a system file to rename the device to a Netflix supported device, save, and reboot. Once I completed all that, I was able to stream Netflix like a charm.
Perhaps these steps could also work for our tabs? I haven't rooted mine yet, otherwise I would have tried this. Perhaps tonight.
