[Q] Epic 4G 2.2 benchmark - Epic 4G General

For those of you running 2.2 on their Epic 4G can you run a quadrant test?
I'm planning on buying a new phone and I'm deciding on the Epic 4G or the Evo Shift 4G. The only thing that is holding me back on the epic is the quadrant test for the Evo Shift was 1500 compared to the Epic's test of 900.
The videos I've seen say that they think this is because its running on Android 2.1 compare to the Evo shifts Android 2.2 OS.

Quadrant has almost no relation to the actual speed of the phone, besides running any of the Epics EXT4 roms scores ~ 2k regularly

what he said is correct check out http://smartphonebenchmarks.com/ it has results from better tool called smartbench as well as quadrant running on 2.2. the galaxy s line is currently the hardware to beat.

No benchmark software gives you a result that relates to the performance of your phone in any real world situation with exception of maybe neocore for your 3d stuff.
Linpack, smartbench, quadrant, ect, ect are all really about the same. I personally use 0xbench mostly because it gives a little more about what the test is actually doing so I can relate it to use.

I agree 100%.
That said, running Nebula 1.07 my scores range 1700-1800. This phone is definitely faster than the Evo Shift, especially in games that require 3d rendering.

Quadrant was designed around the snapdragon processor witch is in most htc devices. This is why they score so high. Quadrant can also be fooled to reach higher scores. It is seriously defected and I wouldn't base buying a phone on a score.

WTF how the f*** do you expect me to base my purchases on other than online reviews and scores???? Here's what I'll do I'll go to sprint and buy both phones then play games on them side by side to determine which one is better just because some f*** idiots on a forum told me not to base my purchase on Benchmarks which is what is done on PC CPUs and GPUs. Buying a phone over scores? The nice big Super AMOLED display doesnt come into play? How about the nice full size keyboard? How about the fact that the epic is just a better phone?

OP - calm down and ignore the kids on here. I swear, some of the members of the Epic forums are worse than the apple fan boys out there. Someone has a different opinion than yours of your precious Epic, or someone has a different desire or need for their cell phone than what you do and all you can do is laugh at their choice and/or questions? I love my epic and all, but its not the end of the world if someone doesn't love it as much as I do.

Here's a crazy idea. Go to the Sprint store and play with both of them. Buy the one you like more. A novel idea i know.
Or you could have done this:
http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=evo+shift+vs+epic4g
And it would have led you to MULTIPLE videos discussing all of the differences between the phones.
Do people not research anything on their own anymore? Is Google this secret website that only I know of?

HTC vs Epic why???

This might not be the right fourm but could someone please tell me why HTC phones are twice as fast than the Epic on linpack? I've tried a EVO and a Droid Incredible, both get a score of 32.500! Why?
Because JIT is optimized for Snapdragon processors, you see more performance boosts with those phones. However, mere benchmarks do not translate to real world performance whatsoever. My Epic is faster than any phone that's out there. Never go by benchmarks, lot of them are as useless as the Windows Experience Index crap. Our phones have the better hardware, when official Froyo is out and devs get the source, you'll see how powerful it really is.
Because linpack performance does not equal real life performance.... I also recall reading that linpack has not been optimized for the epic's processor. However, try 30 seconds using an evo and compare it to the epic and you'll have your actual answer
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I think they are a 128 bit system versus 64 bit. But all I hear from evo user is the epic is faster

Just like cars, there's always someone faster...I think it is pure ignorance to state you alone have the fastest phone in the whole world. *shrug* For me my user experience is awesome and i know firsthand that benchmarks don't tell the whole story and can be faked. With tmpfs and a little knowhow anyone can 3000+ on quadrant.
Sent on the go from my mobile device
I didn't mean to come across as arrogant. I didn't mean I alone have the fastest phone in the world at all. I meant with everything that's out in terms of OC'd kernels, Epic owners in general have faster phones than practically any other out there (currently). Benchmarks are not high, but that does not translate to real world performance which is what I was getting at.
Essentially what has been said before: Linpack has been compiled and optimized for the other processor. Someone has to write code for each specific processor in order for it to take advantage of each one's architecture. Back when Intel's Nahalem chips came out, similar results were observed (I used to build HPC clusters).
Try nenamark1. The epic smokes the evo in that test
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
Simple, linpack is a test checking for raw CPU power via floating points..Snapdragon has a thing called a VFP which is a Floating Point Accelerator...
Aka instead of checking raw CPU power of the CPU..your checking how fast the the VFP processes floating points lol..
To give an example, its like one person actually taking a test, while the other is copying off an answer sheet..who will be the fastest?
If you go by benchmarks that have not had their code optimized for the Snapdragon, where it is more apples to apples (it will never be completely apples to apples), the Hummingbirds generally come out on top.
Plus, if you look at gaming, the FPS on the Hummingbird is much faster. Of course, CPU and graphics benchmarks are quite different.
It has a keyboard
Thread moved to General.
I'm pretty new to android phones but I did my homework before i decided on my epic. My wife wanted the Evo for the larger MP camera and bigger screen so we ended up with one of each. Form the time i've spent on my wife's evo and the time she has spent with my Epic we both have to agree that the Epic preforms far better in realworld test. The scrolling is smother and it has a better overall experience than the evo. So forget about benchmarks... just try one head to head and you'll see which one is the better device..
I've said this before and will say it again. My rooted evo with cm6 and oced to 1.12 ghz isn't as smooth as my epic was out the box. My evo gets 1500 on quadrent while my epic gets 1100 with no jit. Now you tell me wich phone is faster?

Exactly! Was planning on switching to sprint in jan. This is just in time. Just what I wanted. I do not want a behemoth to carry arround. My nexus one with 3.7 screen is perfect size. All I missed was a slide out keyboard and front facing cam.
One other thing I like to consider though. Which will be more likely to have future OS versions ported? I dont bother on relying on sprint/samsung/htc for updates. I am asking about difficulty for devs. A big reason I was considering the epic is that the nexus s came out running the same platform, which made me think porting new OS releases would relatively easy. Is the shift likely to get new releases faster since it is an HTC product? I know it is impossible to know anything but what are your guy's thoughts on this right now?

Err, not sure if this is sarcasm, as beyond exaggeration it is false. You imply the shift has a slower CPU. Dont count mhz. The second gen snapdragon in the shift will certainly outperform the evo without question and with 45nm tech get better batt life to boot. I agree the Evo is not sluggish though. Which means the shift will be even better. Maybe you just need to ditch sense?
As for screen size that is not a downgrade. It is user preference. I like a nice compact device, not a brick.
Same thing with keyboard. I like getting real work done on my handset. KB is very effective.
If you already know this and were joking I apologize . If you were serious you should really rethink your position and recognize that different things suit different people (the CPU issue however is clear cut that the shift is superior).
Cheers!
Those of you who do decide to buy the Shift might be disappointed come June when the true successor to the Evolution drops.

I'm pretty sure we're going to get all of that, but adding 3d is just something to help differentiate and spice up the EVO...I suppose.
I really don't see a practical use for it, but we never know. I remember when cameras were first introduced to' cell phones and a lot of people didn't see the practicality, but now look at how big they've become.
I'm sure we'll find something useful for 3d, assuming it works well.

If it is something that is forced on you without the ability to turn it off.. then it may not be as appealing to me at all.
Side note, I wonder how the devs are gonna tackle this technology once it gets rooted.

Giving serious thought to moving to the Evo 3D

Anyone else giving serious thought to moving to the Evo 3D from the Epic? I am. I know the bootloader is encrypted and that there is no guarantee that it will be unlocked but I just went to the Sprint store and played around with one for a few minutes.
What I noticed was that the screen was not nearly as washed out as the Evo 4G. I also liked how incredibly smooth the screen transition effects were. I've always liked sense but I also like TW3 and TW4.
So the one thing that really caught me off guard was the 3D pictures and movies. I was a little shocked at how cool they looked. I totally thought it was going to look like crap and that the 3D would be a feature I would never use. WRONG! I would probably use it all the time.
No, I've heard the 3D is pretty much rubbish. I'm sold on the Within which'll be released in about a month's time. A far superior phone imho.
what is the Within?
Edit: ah its the galaxy s2. That phone is the best smartphone made to date.

I was just about to make a thread talking about this. Can we stay on forum topic please?

By the way I was not trying to bash the epic. Its a great phone, just looking to upgrade and wanted to get epic user feed back.

It's the same phone as the Epic, just overclocked.

Because they don't get to bash it for having a weaker GPU like they did with the Evo 4G.

Pretty sure it still has a weaker gpu. Adreno220 right? Meh. Also the evo3d is choppy scrolling through menus, which is pathetic.

4 of them. And a single adreno 220 is about equal to the gpu in the OMAP 34430 in the Droid X and 2.

the gpu is a single gpu.. thats all, no tom foolery its not a quadcore gpu with a dual core cpu..
as you can see from the chart.. the nexus s gets 20.9 fps, to get the same performance of an evo3d on this test (bear in mind this is a graphics/gpu test so cpu does have a small part to play in it but not as much) i could overclock my nexus s 4g to 1.4ghz and stomp the stock evo3d...
now why does this matter? you are taking a 1ghz single core, doubling the cores and adding a 20% boost to clock speed to get this kind of.. "performance" boost... now just to be fair ill post the scores of the pro version
now we can get to the good stuff sure the htc evo3d is now on the top, congrats hurrah! please refer back to number 1. you are talking about a cpu that has 220% performance boost, a brand new gpu.... and you get a increase in 11.5 frames per second. now sure when it gets hacked.. and if it can do overclocking im sure it will further push those specs... but from where im standing right now the evo3d is a bit of a joke. ill hold out for the nexus 3 or the sprint within... kthxbai
also as a side note i think its funny how a tegra 2 phone like the atrix takes a 9 fps hit compared to the stock android lg g2x, clearly motoblur is for the best
I was all excited about dual core phones till my roomie got an atrix. Android just isn't ready for it yet. Aside from benchmarks you can't really feel a difference.
Unless I see a massive change before my upgrade (in November), I'll hold out until the new phones are announced at CES and the other shows in the early spring. I'm hoping for a phone that is better than qHD (a la retina display).

Damn! HTC One benchmark

Wow!
This score really tempting me to make an upgrade with my phone, the only one missing is the water an dust proof.
Warm regards from Indonesia in my Motorola Galaxy s3

what does Benchmark Pi test, thats the one that shows huge difference between the S4pro on XZ, Rest are barely anything for me personally. I think some had held back by chrome on the XZ.
all these benchmarks are looking incredible
i cant freaking wait till source is out for the kernel
OVER 9000!

Way over! Damn!
Htc one got 12000+
SKYDRAGON, El M1
Things I am more interested about --
1] Geekbench
2] GLbenchmark
3] Kraken, Octane, Peacekeeper
I thought people stopped using Quadrant long back. Apparently I was very wrong

Hey Zarboz you planning on getting one of these?
btw I usually would put more emphasis on touch responsiveness and UI smoothness/consistent framerate as compared to benchmark scores However benchmark scores of this phone do show that it is in a whole other class compared to any other phone out right now... but I guess it is the first of the next generation, just like the One X was
We'll have to see what the rest are like, especially the GS4
For sure sg4 will be plastic as usually, with a bunch of stuff like multi windows, s vocie and so on that i turn off, just to save battery. Really, samy does it cheaper... Also twz is ugly and boring.
Or wait to X Moto phone
SkyDragon TeamĀ© No Kangy rom allowed.
Maximum can get quadrant benchmark on my s3 just around 8k
Htc one too powerful, big thanks to s600 new processor always better than old processor lol

Those are really high numbers. I'm assuming some sort of custom rom, and /or over clocked? The M7 is running pre released stock sense, I wonder what an over clocked kernel running custom or AOSP would give!

3D benchmarks.....all these get boring when the GPUs power is not fully shown for a game freak like me.....those front speakers with gaming:what::what::what: can't wait.

I don't get the point in benchmarks really, what does a number really tell you? =/
One phone gets say 14,000, One gets 8,000... what does that actually translate to though? =/

Use phone x, y and z and observe the performance.
My experiences in Quadrant... Transform SDXed out: 500+, Evo Shift OCd 1500ish, EVO3d OCd 3900
Each phone was that much faster for games and real world use, mostly.
The outlier was the Transform, butter smooth on the UI. Better than the EVO3d on the homescreen stock. But totally crap for most anything games.
Yeah... I'm about to jump ship and come back to HTC.
Sorry Sammy

Put it like this. Car A can travel at a maximum speed of 100km/h while car B can travel 150km/h
the numbers are the benchmarks. Car B is faster so car A wins.
The reason why they say benchmarks are useless because let's put Car B to real life use.
Car B has 150km/h speed but would you use it in driving the streets? If yes then good luck on the speed limit cameras.

Well... yes... but there can sometimes be an indirect effect on things like battery life. If a chipset is capable of doing more processing for the same amount of power, that likely means it can do the same amount of processing with less power, which means the battery will last longer.
Also, once apps start to become more demanding in the future - more complex 3D games that come out in a year or so - the phones that are faster in the benchmarks now will be able to play newer games for longer before hitting frame-rates that are too low to be enjoyable.
Think of it as car B having a more powerful engine, which lets it go up steeper hills while carrying the same load.
