Will the laptop dock require tethering? - Atrix 4G General

Ok so to pre order the atrix with the laptop dock you need the tethering option is that mandatory even if you buy the dock separately? Does the dock count as tethering?

This was a line in the AT&T press release:
3. Laptop Dock - Firefox browser use with AT&T Mobile Broadband requires Tethering Plan.

Maybe now that there are units in reviewers' hands somebody can try putting in a SIM without tethering plan and see what happens? Has anybody asked?

This also brings up the question...Cant we just blow up the google android browser and use that then since its not against at&t rules haha?

The way the release reads, it implies that using the firefox browser on wifi will be fine, but it's not spelled out.

Ok so using fire fox is tethering so possibly all other browsers will be ok ........ if it winds up that the device being plugged in its self beings the tethering process it would only be a matter of time before it would get cracked ........ I say this because how will Tue phone know when its using firefox on or off the dock if the dock isn't sending its own coding into the phone if that made any sense ....... the dock is obviously putting the phone into dock mode but is this dock mode the reason the phone would register the laptop as tethering?

From what I understand you can get the laptop bundle with tethering, and then cancel tethering afterwards and just simply use wifi. The laptop dock does not require 3G/4G data to be used, but to get the bundle discount they want you to sign up for tethering in hopes you'll keep that service.

I see and if that is the case I will get the bundle but I am wondering if the laptopdock omits a signal or something coding idk that is sent to the phone to say it needs to be tethering

If that were true, I could understand the tethering requirement, but the multimedia dock doesn't seem to have anything in it other than a USB hub, and Moto said that the laptop dock is just a battery, screen, keyboard, and trackpad, no circuitry other than that.

If I was going to get a laptop dock this is the one I would go with this one even comes with a bigger screen and a dvd drive.

LOL. If I didn't have a couple of netbooks (Cr-48 FTW) already I might consider the Atrix laptop dock... if only for the battery.

Lol I keep seeing the new netbooks and laptops coming out and I am getting more and more turned off by the phone but as of now this is all just talk we will see what's what when its released .............. and aabout the tethering issue if it weren't for that reason how would att catch Mozilla as tethering they are releasing their mobile browsers soon if not already ..... there has to be more to the tethering thing then just using Firefox
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App

The tethering issue is just the software AT$T has on the phone.
The phone is not going to come with tethering over usb. The only way you will be able to get it is by slide loading an app. for it or paying AT$T.

Not even considering the laptop dock its a $200 device that they want $500 for.
I will buy a $300 netbook with more features.
Not even sure about the atrix yet it will be months before it has any custom roms, granted its the badest ass phone on the market,or will be.
However I could buy the inspire and root and rom the same day, use wifi hotspot to connect my netbook.
I just cant decide.

Atrix will only be bad ass until tomorrow ( the 13th mobile world conference) when the galaxy s2 is shown that's going to blow everything out of water the only thing is that its for tmobile and I like my att so idk what I'm going to do hopefully we can just implement a modem and it will work for att but the atrix dock I'd out of hand 500 can get you a 13 inch laptop with 4 gb ram 500 gb hdd HD screen bluray reader writer windows 7 64 bit an Intel i7 quad core mobile .......... they dibt eveven comapare 700 for both or even 500 for the bundle? I will have to see what the roms are like when ifs realeased and Matt's phone selection has to grow much larger every carrier has attractive phones and att is just there but we will see ........ might be moving over to T-Mobile for the galaxy s2

You'll need to, since it will suck like the other Samsung phones, and it won't ever get any updates (based on the history of the Galaxy line so far). My feeling is that Samsung's dev team is always going to be too busy working on new stuff to ever release a freakin' update for their phones. They've lost me as a customer, that's for sure.

Well the galaxy s and the epic are getting or got Tue froyo update already and what's better hardware or software update keep in mind we can't update hardware but software we can do every and anything to it? So its a no win situation but I love samsungs and motos so idk what to do

Well at least they're finally getting froyo, although I've heard that before. I like Samsung's hardware a lot, but the support has been horrible as far as updates, thank God for XDA! The Galaxy S line is supposed to be a top of the line phone.... well to me it shouldn't be running outdated software. The Nexus S has nearly identical software, and it runs Gingerbread. Why doesn't the rest of the Galaxy S line? The ROM dump from the Nexus S already runs on the Captivate (although buggy), so if Samsung took a small amount of time to fix the drivers, it could be released. The least they could do is open source the drivers so XDA devs could do it.
If you're trying to choose which to get, I'd say wait and see. I'm unhappy with my Captivate, though, and had to buy my wife a Dell Streak since she hated hers so much. I'd buy one too if I wasn't waiting for the Atrix.

One thing to consider also is if you have the unlimited data plan. If you go with the laptop dock and get the tethering plan your unlimited data plan goes away. Makes it not worth it for me. Confirmed it yesterday at att.

definitely not getting the atrix unless they figure out how to use dock with out The tethering

Through all this fog, let's find a glimmer of hope.

Okay, we DEFINITELY know that ATT (as expected), buzzkilled the SH*T out of the accessories for the Atrix. But, let's see possibilites of the future.
First off, I believe the phone can still be $149 if bought from CostCo/Bestbuy with the 2 year contract (hence, the proof of pictures and Amazon), and $199 through ATT. The accessory docks though... yeah, blew us out of the water.
Although, it's a tad bit early to say the least, to give up on these accessories (as for most people, the REAL deal killer is ATT's idiotic mindset that it is considered tethering your phone to an object that works only as good as my flashlight (laptop dock)). We have lots of brilliant minds waiting to get their hands on the dock (hopefully, if the pricing still wasn't enough to kill it), and there may be possible solutions for not having to get the tethering add-on price to it.
We all know many of us here already tether with our grandfather unlimited smartphone plan, what's the loss in trying it out with webtop.
Prerequisities:
We would have to find ways to buy the laptop dock not through ATT so they don't force change our precious current plans
Ideal:
We can use the laptop dock (regardless of price paid for the accessory) and we wouldn't have to be paying for the tethering add-on.
Possible Problems:
ATT and Motorola have figured out a way to "lock" laptop dock usage without the tethering plan. I've not the slightest clue as to how they will do it, but it's very possible.
Possible Solution:
Some devs find a way to bypass those requirements and we'd be able to use the dock scott-free. After that, we can treat it as how we treat how we tether our laptops.
So, we can look up to this, buy the Atrix for 149 or 199 JUST for now, and hope that in a couple of months there will be a solution to this madness. Hell, ATT may put it on sale because of low sell rate, or just competitive pricing, and by then some devs have figured out some ROMs that let us use the webtop app.
NOT ALL IS LOST YET GUYS..... WE DON'T NEED ATT!
Mark my words, bootloader will be locked far worse than on DroidX. They will encrypt the **** out of it.
This is the last straw, I'm spending my last days with AT&T and switching to VZW with MUCH better network, LTE, Xoom and Bionic.
I mean, it's still a bad ass phone by itself. I didn't plan on getting the docks either way, so I'll take my Atrix along with my unlimited data and have one of the best phones out there spec wise

It's still a really good phone. Basically a bionic with 1gb ram and finger scanner.
What happened to the 1gb ram thing is it actually 1 gb ram.
If not can some developers hack it so all the 1gb is used for android?

yep I agree, IF the dock is not around $150 it's too much BUT I would forget about it and just look at the phone by itself. If alone the phone is not enough then I say move on, meaning, wait for a better phone to hit in a month or so. To me the phone alone seems like a great phone...as long as it itself is not too expensive... Time will tell I guess for all of us.
It is easier to be positive in my neck of the woods though cause I don't think Bell will block sideloading and tethering etc..

They didn't block sideloading for Samsung's Galaxy S. Can't see why they'd do it for the Atrix. And waiting for a better phone in Canada may take way more than a month The only other "big phone" announced is Telus' Desire HD! That's so 2010...
The reason the laptop dock will require tethering is because it uses a full desktop Firefox browser, hence you will be loading full desktop websites. If you were to use your standard dataplan, loading full desktop websites will immediately eat into your data usage.
My $.02.

Yep, that's ATT counterproducing itself. It's stupidity at it's finest.
I can picture how ATT thought about the pricing:
"Oh hey, the internet is mostly excited about the laptop dock and we are getting such a huge fanbase on our Atrix... Let's jack up the price of the laptop dock and add the so-called tethering on it... that'll DEFINITELY kill their joy."

I agree. I think the reasoning for the tethering requirement is quite simple: economics.
Look at it this way: If Motorola prices the dock at $500, and AT&T subsidizes the price down to $300 (if bought as a package), where will the $200 come from? Obviously it isn't in their interest to give away something for nothing, and AT&T obviously subsidizes devices in exchange for a contract. So I'm sure AT&T is figuring that the $200 discount should be made up for by paying for tethering.
The fact that Moto thinks the dock is worth $500 is still idiotic, however. The real dealbreaker of the tethering plan is the loss of unlimited data that's required for those of us that have it.
I would bet that the laptop dock drops in price pretty rapidly, especially since AT&T/Motorola are going to sell about four of them at that price.

Either way, even if it's 3G, I'm having one.
Can't imagine why I would buy something that requires another data plan when I already have a fully capable phone that I need to have with me all the time anyway.
The few times I've been out and about and needed data access I just turned tether on my phone and used that.

A phone for tetering

I recently just bought the nexus 7 and I totally regret laughing at those silly people on the train holding their 7 inch because I am now one of them. This thing is godsend. But I recently sold my phone and I am now looking for a phone just to tether to my nexus 7. Do you guys tether on the go or pine for a free WiFi?
At first I wanted phone that can tether my 3g network comfortably without freezing up when I receive a message on my phone.
But after I tried a lte enabled s3 in one of the hand phone shops I'm now sold. . I'm looking to purchase the iPhone 5 just to tether and message because it is idiot proof.
So what do you guys use to tether? And what do you think of getting a iPhone 5 just for tethering? Because android has really bad tethering apart from HTC and its WiFi hotspot app which rocks.

Listen, I wouldn't get a iPhone, (My opinion). They are way over priced in the first place, let alone just for tethering and messaging. 2nd, Apple totally locks you down, so you will regret getting an iPhone if your a tech enthusiast.
As you said, HTC tethering is amazing, and I have never had a single issue tethering my HTC One X to my N7, and to be honest, it feels broadband speed. I'm not saying you should get a HTC One X (YES YOU SHOULD!!!) but as you said , HTC are great for tethering, so I would have a look at your HTC options my friend, + the N7 and HTC are like husband and wife.
I sold the one x I didn't really like it maybe because it was just so good. There wasn't anything I could do to tweak it haha. Viper x was awesome though.
I wannptntontether easily and message easily and I need quick compose which none of the android apps have.. jail breaking bite SMS and tether is all I need. One more thing I am sick of changing Roms cause of my itchy hands and iphones can stay on one released for ages once it stabilises

Android are actually WAY better for tethering, at least the ones I have used have been (Xperia Arc S, Xperia S, HTC Desire).
The best bit? Tethering on Android is invisible to the network provider, but on iphone, they can tell and charge you for tethering.
I wouldn't get an Iphone5 anyway, it's last-years Android specs for double the money.

I'm totally confused here.. You don't want Android because it's too good, do you want a ****ty phone?
Anywho, just get an Android phone with 4.x, use bluetooth tethering. It uses very little power and you don't even have to fiddle with it, once you pair and enable BT Tether you don't have to do anything else, don't have to turn it on and off when you want to use it, etc, and when it's idle it uses almost zero power.
And BTW, it's okay to hold your 7 inch on the train? Creepy.
I tried to Bluetooth tether using the one x but it didn't work. Its paired but the connection couldn't be shared even though it says it is available mow

Is the Nexus 4 right for me?

Current Iphone 4 user. This phone is shot, home button barely works and no WIFI or GPS anymore. I am eligible for an upgrade via AT&T and plan to stick with them due to a 20% discount. I have a nexus 7 tab and I love the thing, jelly bean rules IMO. I don't want another iphone due to the "same old" feeling and paying $40 for a damn cable is stupid IMO. Should i wait out and buy this thing? Money isn't an issue due to working tons of OT from hurricane sandy. I was even wondering if I can buy this, and keep my AT&T upgrade for a phone in spring 2013. LTE 4g is heavy in my area.
My main uses for a phone
txting
pictures> Avid fisherman and quality shots really mean a lot to me as my iphone 4 still takes a damn good photo
music Storage is limited on this phone however I have the same on my iphone 4 and survive fine. Google music is plenty as is OTG cable
talking
random apps (droid suites all my needs except for a few)
Battery life isn't the end all however nice. I have 1amp chargers in home/work/truck/boat.
Thanks guys, a new phone is all i'm really looking forward to right now as Long Island is a really depressing area right now.
Should fit you well, go for it!

I might, I really need to play with it first, i'm not going to buy anything without having it in my hands for a good 10-15 mins or more.
The camera and LTE are making me nervous. My ISP provides over 50,000 access points to its customers (i'm an employee in tech support) so WIFI is covered more than LTE.
The camera better be pretty damn good, photosphere sounds cool and I have a few idea's, however the regular "snapshot" is what I need.
Considering buying this to play with during the winter, and using my upgrade for the Samsung galaxy s4 when it comes out in february, if I can do that.

How much would you spend?

I'm not going to bother whether you'd still buy one or not...I think i know the answer
I had been leaning HEAVILY toward an ipad mini as my first tablet.
Talk me out of it
I'd prefer to stay with android so I can root and have all my apps and the things I know and love.
However, I just haven't found a form factor that i like. The 16:10 is just too skinny on the 7" IMHO.
Then i found out about this 7.7 and I'd love to have one.
I actually only need the wifi version but that looks harder to come by??
I'm on ATT. On the GSM version, can I just take my sim out and use it for data in the tablet?
Besides those questions, how would you pay for your tablet if you had to purchase it today?
I'd pay the $350 a ipad mini would cost me.
However, the ones I see are $450+

I'm browsing these forums because I'm eying the refurbished Galaxy Tab 7.7 Verizon 4G on eBay for $250... so I'm guessing you can get it for well under $450. Considering returning my Nexus 7 for it...
I saw some wifi only for buy it now or best offer on ebay. Not sure I want to go that route from Taiwan. I wonder how much vzw would charge outright without month to month. I bet if they would have kept the price down this thing would have been hard to keep in stock...

The pictures is this ebay ad show the 6800...
you see the green telephone icon in the lower left??
The 6810 doesnt have that..
"IF" you get the 6800.. then YES, you can move your ATT sim card there and BAM! An exact duplicate of your smart phone and it's features...
including phone calls, receiving phone, send and receive TXT messages and mms.. everything your existing smart phone does.. same phone number..
it all followes your sim card.
I do it and many others on here do it too..
BUT, you cant do it with the 6810 or Verizons version..
they dont have sim card slots... good luck
6810 is wifi.
6800 is wifi+3g
Sch-i815 is VERIZON wifi+LTE
As stated earlier, you can have wifi AND full phone functionality with the 6800 with your at&t sim.
Don't get the i815 unless you have service with Verizon or unless you plan to use it for wifi only. You can only get data service (phone functionality is disabled) with the Verizon i815 if you have a Verizon account on the stock rom only.
If you want to use cyanogenmod or aosp roms please note that our tab shares most of its internal hardware with the international galaxy s2 and international galaxy note, which means full jelly bean butter is not functional until Samsung releases the right source.

I paid $400 for mine... New from Verizon a few months ago and I still think it's worth it. The iPad mini isn't really a consideration for me, even for $50 less.
But I think the 7.7 is pretty close to perfection.
I had p6800 from end of January. Then at the beginning of December, I broke the screen and needed to decide what replacement devicebto take. I liked Ipad Mini for form factor and casing. But ultimatelly the iOS and poor specifications put me off. Nexus 7 3G is nice but the screen is too small. Anything that is 8.9 inch or larger is too large for me. So I bought another p6800. It is significantly better than the original as it does not suffer from yellowish discoloration of the screen which the original had. I think there is still no competition for p6800 out there (if you don't care for high computing / video generating power but you need smallndevice with good /though somehow dark/ screen and battery life).

K

On the verizon website it doesn't have an off contract price. Do you buy month to month and cancel? There are activation fees and first month charges.
Thanks for the feed back folks.
Btw I thought there was a jb leak on the international note.

If I go with just wifi does it matter what model I go with? I'll be rooting and checking out the roms available bit probably stick with cm. I use mostly 3rd party apps. I'll load nova launcher, boat browser Swift key and enhanced email for sure.

Well, I decided to bite for $250. Versus the Nexus 7 that I have for $200, the extra $50 is worth it to me for the screen alone. I'm not going to be using data so I don't care about Verizon vs. AT&T etc. concerns.
Ahhh. You are tempting me! I'll sleep on it.... 250 really isn't a bad price. I'll probably do it lol!

Ok, 7.7 has captured my affection.
Y'all saved me from iOS!
Looking forward to my first tablet.
My galaxy note might become jealous....
I have had my P6810 for 11 months now and there is still nothing out there that comes close IMO. Thin, light, brilliant screen, expandable storage.
Those guys were quick. It's already been shipped. I'll have to wait til tomorrow I guess to see when it will actually arrive.
Looking forward to it

There was no contract when I got mine for $400. I am paying the $10/month to have it on my plan but I can drop it any time I want.

This tablet is beautiful man. I just acquired a nexus 10 and I'm having a a hard time deciding on changing my setup from galaxy nexus/gtab 7.7 to gnote 2/nexus 10. The nexus 10 flies like you wouldnt believe man, but the non-portable size and non amoled screen are keeping me from leaving this tab

Thanks. I'm content with my purchase and can't wait to get it, root and have some fun. No buyers remorse....
I do love my galaxy not phone. Don't think I'll be changing it any time soon.
I thought pretty hard on getting the nexus 10 but I know it would be too big for my first tab. With a 5.3" phone it would be hard to 'just' go to the nexus 7 but i did like how it felt in hand. I almost went I pad mini to broaden my tech consumption with ios but at the end of the day I know I'd want to customize it too much
