[Q] Advise if I have a brick on hand - Fascinate General

I wanted to ask the experts here before I move forward on getting another phone.
This was a retarded move on my part but I installed a T-mobile Vibrant froyo 2.2 onto my Verizon Fascinate... (I know, you're wondering how this could have happened.. it had to do with a un-helpful friends advice/assistance.)
I used a little package deal of files installed through Odin.

Warning stated: THIS WILL WIPE ANY DATA ON YOUR DEVICE, IT WILL REPLACE YOUR BASEBAND, KERNEL, RECOVERY AND OS.
The phone starts up fine and I can get apps and surf on my wireless without issue.
The problems which lead me to believe my phone is bricked from ever going back to Verizon fascinate froyos rom is a few major issues.
1.) If the phone is powered on, anytime I plug in the USB cable to the PC or charger, the phone goes black and the power turns off. I cannot get the phone to turn on at all with the USB cable plugged in.
2.) The phone will not go into download (triangle) mode regardless of the button combos pressed.
3.) I tried to use the rom installer on the clockwork app but when the phone reboots it gets stuck at startup in the system recovery. The volume buttons will not allow me to select anything.

Well, if everyone determines the phone is bricked.. give me some ideas on how to swap it out for a replacement. This one is a VZW certified-preowned phone. 14 day return policy which I just got it. If a rep was to turn it on, they will see it says T-mobile Vibrant! ouch..

That pit file looks a lot like a Vibrant Odin file.....you should reflash Odin with some DL09 Odin files. I think you can save your phone at this point.
Edit: didn't see that you can't access download mode. Thats a problem.

Just to verify..when you try to go into download mode you have your battery out of the phone and you plug the usb cable into your phone while holding volume down right?
SCH-I500 - Froyo DL30/Matted Bluebread

if our button combo for download mode doesnt work, I would look into what you have to do for the vibrant, since you flashed their kernel it might respond to whatever you have to press for that.
Vibrant download mode - plug in USB, hold vol up + vol down and press power

can you put our CWM as update.zip on there and have it load that? If you can get in CWM there is a download mode boot.
Just thinking out loud of ideas, even if its far off, its something to try before having to pay $500

Good call. Hopefully you can get your phone into download mode brother. Wondering if maybe there is an app to reboot into download mode. I know before we had power options I had used anreboot to reboot into recovery but idk about download mode. also I wonder if you'll need different drivers or if the fascinate drivers will work (I've forgotten if they are general galaxy s drivers or application specific)

Wow! I bet your friend didn't do this to his/her phone, right? Hope things work out for you. In the future use XDA and look up procedures and ASK QUESTIONS like your doing now.
Ps....know anyone who would like to buy a bridge? It doesn't go anywhere, yet.

Well you flashed Vibrant to the phone...vibrant has to have their item way to flash...like software such as Odin....possibly get the software compatible for Vibrant....read up on how to get to that software download mode....and flash back to DL09?????????

Thank you for the responses. I just came home from work so I'm going to give this a shot tonight and test out everyones suggestions. I'll see if I can un-brick this thing. I'll report back with the results.

Good news and bad news. My phone work was cut short due to the battery dying. Remember how I mentioned when the USB is plugged in the phone turns off? Well it also prevents the phone from charging. It went from soft brick to true BRICK! Can we coin that term? True brick haha
With that being said, I can send it back under warranty and get a replacement since it will not turn on or charge and has no water damage.
BUT before I do this, I will give the phone to my EXPERIENCED friend who I should have spoke to from the start. He owns a vibrant running froyo 2.2 with a 2.3 visual overlay. His battery should swap with mine. He will give it a good comb over to make a last ditch effort before I call it in. I do hope we can revert it back for my sake but also to share this info with all of you.

Have you attempted to use a USB jig to get into download mode? That method is usually foolproof, from what I've heard. You can either buy one for a few bucks, or there's also video instructions available on how to make your own.

THAT is a great idea about using the USB jig. I see the tutorial on xda to make one. Talk about going the distance to recover a brick, that's awesome! I'll see if I can manage to incorporate this.

Good luck man!

Gotta love friends advice!! I would bet it was expecting the button configuration for the vibrant to go into download mode. Although it wasnt the best idea I doubt its really bricked. Good Luck!!

... or, maybe they will just pop in a fresh battery, and see the damage you have caused? I know that's what I would do if I were a VZW rep and you brought me a phone that did not turn on.

this is probably your best option, though I have not used it myself.

Report is in. It's bricked or at least bricked beyond our abilities to fix it.
The reason the phone cannot be fixed is because the volume buttons do not work in the samsung recovery utilities screen. Which means you are unable to select the different options to reinstall package etc.
The second issue is due to the USB software and charging parameters of the phone being changed, it cuts the phone power off anytime a USB cable is connected regardless of JIG or not. My friend explained it turns the phone power off to protect the battery from overcharging. The battery on the vibrant and fascinate do work when plugged into each phone but they are different and charge differently. The fascinate battery will not charge when plugged into a vibrant phone.
A verizon agent explained (off the record) if you take the phone into a local shop they WILL send you packing because they'll know you messed it up. If you send it in, they'll still know you messed it up but as long as there is no physical damage or water damage, the phone gets sent back to samsung which in turn satisfies verizon on their end. This in turn gets you a no charge replacement depending on your phone still being in warranty range. This is what I've been told but as you know in life, there is no guarantees.

Most importantly, thank you again for everyones suggestions and input!! When I get a replacement I will have to get someone to baby me through the root process and DL30 install

You are welcome brother. Glad you can at least get a new phone!

Stuck in Car Kit Mode

Anyone else ever come across this problem? I powered up my phone this morning to find it stuck in NaviPanel, disabling NaviPanel was easy but the phone is still in Car-Kit mode (all calls are stuck on loud speaker only and phone is in landscape mode)
Is there a way to disable car kit mode, perhaps in registry?
Please help
Hey guys
I have done the same problem with the ROM from Vodafone.
I made flash ROM from HTC official 1.48.479.1 and the problem remained.
Ask someone what to do
did u guys solve ur problems?
i had the same problem. my device is from germany.
so i did a hard reset by turning off the phone and then pressing and holding the VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN buttons, then press the END/POWER button shortly and release it. You will then see this message on the screen:
This operation will delete all your personal data, and reset all settings to manufacturer default. Press VolUp to restore manufacturer default, or press other keys to cancel. Then release the VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN buttons and press the VOLUME UP button to perform the hard reset, or press any other button to cancel the reset.
so now its gone and i hope it doesnt come back cause it was really irritating but i have no clue why it happened in the first place.
any ideas guys?
I did HR many times and error is still recurring. I made a new Flash ROM and after installing all the programs after two days its returned.
Yesterday I made a flash ROM, I did not install anything and and wait if it will be OK.
If not going to complain to Vodafone.
Hi guys
The problem is with the connector, I found that it causes a disconnect in the "disk" mode from the USB cable.
When I moved up and down it stopped.
could u elaborate a bit. what connector are u talking about and what disk?
thanks
This is a micro USB connector on the bottom side.

"Disk" mode is the mode when connected to PC. You can choose ACTIVESYNC or DISK.
now i get it. my HD2 is in german so thats why i didnt get it the first time.
I have this problem too!
Hey guys,
I've just started experiencing this problem too... came out of the blue when I was using one of Miri's ROMs. I didn't even know it was the car kit mode that was causing the problem until I restored the default T-Mobile UK ROM.
I can't seem to get it out of this mode now... does this mean my HD2 now has a serious hardware fault, i.e. is the USB port loose? How did you get this fixed? Are you saying I need to go into 'disk' mode? When you say you moved up and down what do you mean? Did you wiggle the usb cable?
Please help... I really don't want to have to send my phone in for repair as I really need it for work...
Cheers guys,
Benjaml.
Stuck in car kit mode without car kit... faulty HD2?
Hello,
I was hoping someone could help me before I take my HD2 into T-Mobile UK for repair.
My phone seems to think the magnetic car kit is attached even though I don't own one! My phone defaults to landscape on the dialer, messaging and in Opera. When I receive or make a call the phone switches to speakphone automatically. The Navipanel appears.
The problem started at first when I was using one of Miri's ROMs, but now I've reverted to the standand HSPL and T-Mobile factory ROM and the problem still exists. T-mobile support fobbed me off by telling me to install HTC's latest ROM (even though the HTC site doesn't allow me to use my serial number!).
Is this a symptom of a faulty USB port? I've tried cleaning the contacts below the battery with alchohol but the problem still exists...
Running out of options and don't fancy a 2 week repair as I need to use the phone with business.
If any pro's have an idea please let me know. I love my HD2 and this is worrying me as it highlights to me a badly built phone... Yes the car kit is a great idea, but not if it buggers up the phone when you don't own it or it's not in use!!!
Thanks in advance,
Benjaml.
Hi Benjaml,
the first thing I did was banned autorun NAVIpanelu. Setting -) - others) Car Kit mode -) and then I disabled the automatic startup Navipanelu.
Phone is still in landscape mode all calls are stuck on loud speaker only
Connected microUSB connector with HD2 (other end is not connected anywhere) and I gently move it up and down, left and right until the display switched to portrait.
For me it worked.
I have the same problem, I do not want to claim HD2 and then wait a month or longer than it repaired . .
I have now got the same problem. I woke the phone up today to find navipanel on. The only way I could get out of it was to press the green call button (which left me with the phone locked in landscape mode with the loudspeaker turned on, or as has been suggested by plugging in the charger.
I did a HR and all seemed fine but then Navipanel reappeared.
Plugging the charger in sorts it but then at soon after it reverts to naviapanel.
My HD2 is now virtually unusable. I have called Virgin as I'm still within the 28 day returns period. The tech guy was sympathetic (but had not heard of the problem before) and offered me a replacement handset but couldn't 'restart' the 28 returns period which means if the problem reoccurs with the new handset I'll have to send it in for a repair that they've never heard of and therefore never done.
I can't affotrd to be without my phone for weeks whilst they investigate so therefore - reluctantly - I've asked for the paperwork to cancel my contract and return the handset
If anyone has a way to solve this please respond otherwise I'll probably be defecting to the dark (apple) side in the next week.
(Using stock 1.66, upgraded from stock 1.48 a week ago. Problem didn't occur with 1.48 but then again didn't appear with 1.66 until today either. No 'new' apps or tweaks done in the last few days)
I have the same problem. It started yesterday so I did a HR but it still happens (I'm using stock 1.66 to which I upgraded about a week ago).
I've installed SPB shell which at least allows the phone to function, but as with you, any incoming calls cause the phone to go straight to landscape with the loudspeaker on, and any typing also has to be done in landscape.
I spoke ot Virgin UK tech support but they hadn't heard of the problem so could only offer a replacement handset. I declined as I'm just within the 28 day cooling off period and if the problem reoccurs with the new handset I'll be stuck with Virgin and their limited alternative handset models.
So as things stand the HD2 is being returned to them in the next few days and the contract cancelled.
Before I chose the HD2 it was a toss up between it and an iPhone.
Initially I was delighted I'd gone with the HD2 but I can't afford to be without a handset for x number of weeks whilst they investigate and repair it.
So if anyone can solve this 'stuck in car kit/landscape' mode in the next few days I'll be delighted, but if not it's goodbye HTC and hello Apple.
Very disappointed as other than this problem I really like the phone
Reply from HTC
Just received this response from HTC. They seem to think it might be a driver conflict... !?! I've installed different ROMs so I don't think it's this issue...
Any one else with more knowledge of the phone have any ideas? It's not a result of using HSPL on the device is it? I've restored to stock ROM and still getting this issue. which seems to happen or restore to normal when I plug in my phone to charge using the MicroUSB cable and charger.
Regards,
Benjaml.

Dear valued HTC customer,
Thank you for contacting our Customer Support Center. We are dedicated to providing you with the best quality service and answering all of your questions and concerns.
This could be a driver conflict and we recommend to try a hard reset on it make sure that you back up all your data before the reset. You can try as well to contact the network operater to find out if they already release the rom update to the HD2 because in HTC web site there is one but only for notbranded devices. If the problem still going on after this then contact us in this line +44 8458900079 and we will send your device to be repaired.
Best regards,

I did another HR yesterday (that was the 2nd one) and the problem hasn't reoccurred .... yet.
The phone's been stable since the HR and I've reinstalled all of the software and tweaks I had before.
My dilemma now is do I return the handset and cancel the contract whilst I'm still in the cooling off period or do I chance it and keep the handset and virgin contract and hope all is fine?
............. decisions decisions!
hey there,
i had the same prob but after a hard reset and shutting off navipanel it hasnt reoccured.
i would suggest u to cancel ur contract and send it back.
for the price ur paying and the phone with its reputation to live up to, its just not worth it.
send it back and make a new contract in a month or so if u can.
HD2 going back for repair.
I'm still seeing this problem, though it seems to be intermittent, and is more likely to occur once I charge my phone using the micro USB cable. Occasionally it will enter Car Kit mode completely randomly when I'm out and about and using my phone for business which makes this phone unusable. I'd just like to warn people who may be thinking of buying this phone. It's a great phone and I love it, but this is a big show stopper for me. Unfortunately I've had the phone for two months now and I won't be able to swap this for another, keep this in mind when you think everything is fine... it could happen to you too.
I'm not happy with HTC's almost canned response of send it in for repair. After a year if this is a serious hardware fault they won't touch it. I'm on an 18 month contract so this could be painful in the long run. Don't get me wrong, I love HTC and I've had their phones for years, going all the way back to the original touch. The more advanced the phone tho' the greater the potential for things to go wrong I guess.
Benjaml. <-- wandering to his local T-Mobile UK shop.
I just had the same problem. Went away as soon as I plugged it into the normal wall charger. I think it may have had something to do with new car charger I just used.

You are right. That makes the HD2 do these things.
How do I know? I ordered different 'USB mini to USB micro adapters'. (By means of an adapter I still could use my old 12V HD charger). Some models did not change the behavior of the HD2, other adapters showed the features described above. An example of the latter is the Motorola SKN6252.
So it'll have to do with the wiring inside the adapter/connection.
Regards
Thanks for this - not sure how I ended up in this situation too - I can't work out what i did...the phone was suddenly in Navi-panel mode.
got out of it by unticking the option "auto launch navipanel in car kit mode" and rebooting, but my phone is still in "car kit mode" so i have to disable the loudspeaker on each call!
I'll try the charger option!

So. I take it there is no way to unbrick this...

I was on the phone with T-Mobile and the woman on the other end either had no idea what I was talking about or, she really did. Her probing questions were perfect and she understood everything I was saying...but the only thing she could think of doing was stripping down the phone, have just the battery, and then press and hold VOL UP+DOWN and Power till the Samsung Vibrant screen came on.
I would have a picture for you, but looks like the forum doesn't allow 'new' members to post. Too bad lurker time can;t be counted toward any of it.
Anyway, the best description of what on my screen:
It has a cellphone on the left, a computer on the right, connecting dots and an orange triangle with an exclamation point. It's all int he middle of the screen.
Best part of this is: I did nothing to the phone. i only downloaded some games and a backup program I can't remember the name. Phone was still locked. I'm not venturing into doing anything like that till i have the money to buy another in a worst case scenario.
So...any ideas?
Add insurance in case you mess anything up. You have 14 days...
That doesn't sound like it's bricked but you didn't tell us anything...
That's the recovery screen, but I'm not sure what you are trying to accomplish...
try to reboot the phone into recovery mode and wipe the phone.
I've tried rebooting to recovery mode.
As for not telling the forum anythng; I'm sorry. I left one detail out:
I downloaded a free application, it's a backup program. I don't remember the name of it (this is my first droid phone, big step up from your standard flip phone with a 6 color screen). I left it running a backup of all the photos and 3gp videos I put on the SD card. Fell asleep, woke up 6 hours later....
BOOM.
I did tell you everything, as in I have no desire to hack/crack/jailbreak/spook/circumvent/customer-os/firmware-flash this phone. I only wanted to charge it after playing with it for a while.
I've tried several of the volume button and power button resets, with/without SD card and SIM. I even tried doing it without the battery in the phone plugged into the USB port.
6 hours of internet browseing and reading and trying these different things, and still nowhere close to an answer form T-Mobile than I need the phone replaced.
I can't easily do it, because I have to send the phone in, wait for a 'credit' to hit my account and order another phone, all the while my service is going to stay active because I am on a Flexpay account.
I love the phone. But it's this kind of thing that has made e stay with your standard, low-tech flip phone from Tracfone. This wouldn't be such a big headache of the cellular antenna in that Tracfone was working. It's lasted me almost 4 years.
Anyway. Is there a program that forces a connection to the phone, kinda says "HEY! you are connected to a computer, now do your stuff!"??
Is there a button combination to make it look for a recovery image ont he SD card like when I would flash my OLD Dell Axim X50??? Noone seems to know alot about this phone yet.

Sounds like you were in some sort of recovery mode. That more closely resembles the default Android recovery.
Nope.
It has a white icon of a cellphone pn the left, 2 dots, a orange triangle with an exclamation point, 2 dots and another icon that kinda looks like a computer.
Breaking forum rules, but whatever:
http // img231.imageshack.us/ img231 / 1830/ 0720000800.jpg
YAY! It worked. Just add a colon after http and get rid of the spaces.
Of course you know that if this we're happening to you on postpaid, they'd swap your phones out with no inbetween phone time. Your local T-Mobile store might also have loaner phone for you.
probably a cheap flip phone. I was forced to get Flexpay. I guess the last 7 years f ontime, in-full payments to anything hasn't fixed my credit at all. That would explain Verizon's want of a $400 security deposit.
So... I've been doing some research. If Odin can be used to reflash the stock firmwares onto the phone...and if this phone uses an SD card (only say this because windows recognized the internal storage as an SD card) and if one of the other Samsung Android phones when taken apart , had a SD slot for the internal storage (looks like you can actually easily replace the SD card) then what if I took apart the phone, removed the SD card and formated and partitioned it on my computer through my card reader...
These are all just educated guesses. I mean... it looks like my phone has no idea what to do because maybe the SD card is bad or something, unbeknownst to me, reformatted the card improperly.
I posed this same question to Samsung and have yet to hear from them.
What do you guys think? Anyone actually crack open their phones yet?
It seems to me that your options are limited.
I'd say you should root it and see if that gives you more options, but I don't know how feasible that will be for you to do at present.
Can't root a phone that's not booting up to recovery or being seen by a computer
Just received info from Samsung:
Yeah, it looks like the phone needs to be re-flashed or replaced. Head to your local T-Mobile Store or call them up."
So Samsung isn't willing to let go of any other information on this or even extrapolate on the idea of reflashing.
Again, it looks like there is no internal storage with a bootloader to tell the phone what to do.
i see 1 solution
when i bought my vibrant they told me i have 14 days to return or exchange the phone if there is any issues with it the phone came out on the 15th i think so you still have 6 days to take it in show them the problem and they can swap you out with a new vibrant
bricked my g1
When i got my first g1, I rooted it and tried to flash a rom. I bricked it! I called Tmo,I said it froze and wouldn't boot up. They walked me through troubleshooting(of course nothing worked) and said it was software and sent me a brand new one it was only 2 wks old. Maybe an idea for ya.
If you are with in your return period(30 days California, 14 everywhere else) I would take it back and get a new one instead of trying to fix it.
Why trying to fix it yourself? Bring it back to a t-mobile store and exchange for a new one.

I've bricked my G1 few times. t-mobile has always exchange it for me during the first year.
i know what your phone has theres a cure but you will most likely have to root it then return it back to stock look under the ms guru section for returning your phone to stock it should help you but then you need to do a restore with the nandroid backup to be completely stock. you'll have to put your phone into download mode hold both volume buttons and power let it do the vibrant screen twice then let go of power and still hold the volume buttons you should be in download mode proceed with the other things from there meaning ms guru and using odin
If you are having the problem I think you are, you should be able, if the software is compatible with Vibrant because I don't know if it is, to restore it with the Odin software or at least thorough a far more complicated process using adb. Check this thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989, and see if you are having a similar problem.

I wanted to let you know I had this same issue and I was still able to get into download mode with the same method described in the earlier post:
1:with phone off hold down volume up and volume down buttons- keeps buttons held
2ress and hold power on button
3:when the screen with the computer and cellphone on it appear for the second time wait for it to disappear
4:when it disappears wait for 1 second a let only power button go and you will be in download mode(android with shovel\big yellow triangle) and you can flash with Odin.
I tried this 5 or 6 times before I got it right but in the end I was able to get back to stock ROM and phone was brand new. Hope this helps.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S/GT-I9000M
it's about how to find out if the phone is from the defective pile or not via the IMEI #
but of course, the best way to find out is to press the 3 buttons
it's always funny to see the sales people faces when i do it in front of them and they are like OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! HOW DID YOU DO THAT?
100% on the IMEI ?
If this is true this should get stickied
we'll need more people to confirm
specially those that have done the swap, if they can remember their old IMEI, and the new one

Mine has the 3 buttons disabled and the IMEI isn't right. Mine doesn't have a 60 in that order in it anywhere. I have 01xxxxx as the last 7 digits where the wiki says 60xxxxx is the problem.
Unless I REALLY suck at entering download mode.
is really really easy to get into Download mode
it takes a bit of practice to get into Recovery mode, but the Download mode is a no brainer
just hold those 3 buttons, after you put back the battery and bam! you are there already

I also do not know how you are getting that IMEI
How are you viewing yours?

#*06#
i have something completely different come up.
My IMEI is the same as Frostshock's
FYI i got my phone on the Friday the 6th the phone came out in Coquitlam (Vancouver)
Bunk.
Poppycock.
Horsefeathers.
It's a timing issue people, not a "bad batch". I've yet to run into a non-bricked one that wouldn't go into unlock mode eventually. Not always the first time, but eventually it will go. I personally tested 4 units at a Bell store this week that were returned for this particular problem...all went into Recovery or Download mode when I tried it. Ponder on that.
Same issue with the Captivate, sometimes it just got stubborn about going into download mode, but it would eventually via keypress.
Oh, and FYI, both of my units didn't have a "6" anywhere in the IMEI string...the 9th digit was 0.
The IMEI on my Bell also doesn't have a 60xxxx or a 65xxxx on it.
3532850401207XX
I can get into download mode easily, but how do I try recovery?
Also, why is it that with my Rogers SIM, I can receive calls and text (though calls drop eventually) but not make a call or send a text? Is it normal for locked phones to be able to receive but not give?
sorry guys that's supposed to be the Serial # number not IMEI #
you can see it after you remove the battery inside the phone, or in the box where it came in

Ah...my first was a "60" series, my current is a "61"
yup that was my suspicions too, the first batch is the problematic one.
My serial number ends in 61xxxxx, was from the first shipment Bell got on Friday, and can't go into download or recovery mode. So there's more to it than that.
Edit: I was looking at my box because I didn't want to open my phone...my SIM number was stuck on top of the serial number, so that was my SIM number I gave you >_>. My serial number ends in 77####P, so the mystery continues.
if you look at the label of the box, it is the looooooong number at the top of IMEI, there is no letter in that bar code scanner (serial #)
Then it is 61xxxxx but...that's also the number on my SIM card...and that number is nowhere to be found underneath the battery. Under my battery where it says S/N it ends in a P.
Mine actually ends in 59965XX.
You still haven't answered how I get into recovery mode (it's stuck at download mode).
Also, why is it that my Rogers SIM can receive calls and text?

Guess you should of tried the 5 phones that I handled on Tuesday. The only one that would go into recovery/download was the store demo. Could get it to work every single time, nada on the other 4.
But yes, a lot of people might not know how to do it properly and returned perfectly working units. But I'd bet one of my bank accounts that you could not have got my phone to 3 finger into recovery.

Bet ya I could.
I spent 4 hours off and on one night trying to get my Captivate into download mode last month, and if I wasn't in a hotel room 1000 miles from where I bought it, I would have given up and returned it the next morning, swearing it was bricked or un-doable. I stuck it out and it worked. It's been flaky on and off since then, but now I KNOW I can coax it into Download eventually. We have a relationship, me and that phone.
I also spent 25 minutes last night fussing with my "61" series Bell Vibrant after a stupid Odin incident..but it went, eventually.
They're temperamental, kinda like women and mules (no offense to the mules!).

I can tell you 100% for sure its not a timing issue.. I had one that would not go into download mode or recovery but I exchanged it and go one that would... its very easy to get one to go into download mode when it works on one that does not have the issue.. This was confirmed on the samdroid.net forums the Sbl.bin from bml4 seems identical but it was compiled on a different day and one string and data is slightly different. could have been an error when the file was compiled and downloaded to some phones. but since 95% of people don't root there phones no one really noticed till after.

I9000M new replacement phone 10.12 dies in less than 3 hours

This is simply ridiculous.... >.<
picked up the phone after work
brand new phone 10.12, with stickers and everything, pristine condition.
it was loaded with JH2, proceeded to sim unlock the phone, done
signed up to my gmail account to enable Market downloads
downloaded my titanium backup pro, and proceeded to restore everything from backup.
great roughly 45 min later after restoring my tons of apps and games, things seems well.
next step, hooked it up to KIES
it works! wow!
immediately came up with the "new firmware blah blah blah..." (JL2) expected
I selected hit yes to continue, it installed JL2 perfectly.
rebooted all nice and tandy
but just in case, i decided to wipe everything, root 2.2, with super1click, flawless
signed backed into google account to get Market downloads
got my titanium pro... started restore... fine at first around 160+ apps restored
then it choke and got worse, only 30ish, and then worse not even 15, and... it's choking even when restoring 1 by 1
that's the sign... the internal SD is on its way out again....
i can't even restore a single app as i type this
and even market downloads, is a some times yes, some times it wont even bother downloading as it can't save.
i'm pretty sure if i go into Recovery Mode, and try a Format, i'll get the dreaded
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (No such file or directory)
E:copy_dbdata_media:Can't mount SDCARD:
So its not dead. Should change the title ;p mine does the same thing with market and titan have not tryed reformating though and im on darkys rom (no wipe). My phone is a 10.12.

Will this be your 3rd repair now?
I guess they'll just ship you a new one again this time? instead of making your wait for them to try to fix it ?
Try asking for Facinate or Captivate... (if they say they are gonna send you a new one). Why not? Do you really use that front cam?
I know that if they ever gonna offer me to just send a new phone, i'll be asking for non i9000M.
that sucks.. are you about ready to chuck it through the window and tell them to shove it.. what really sucks is we, or at least i bought it outright.. that is an expensive paperweight. I would try to send it to samsung this time and ask them to replace it with an i9000b or i9000t with the 8gb memory maybe.
i'm going to try a few more things, and see if i can "fix" it or something, or perhaps it's corrupted.
i lost 4 hours of sleep last night... not exactly in the best mood right now to try anything on the I9000M without wanting to HAMMER it
but yeah, this time i'll definitely be calling Samsung to get my shipping label, i'm not going through the long wait through the Bell stores again.
yes, it'll be my 3rd time.
On the Positive side of things... the Motorola Milestone XT720 is a nice little beast packed in a great metallic shell, once unlocked, rooted, optimized, it runs even better than a SGS, no joke. Having a great time playing with the XT720
Didn't have time to do much on the Nexus S, i was exhausted... still transferring all my apps and stuff from my SGS to the Nexus S.
Trying to stay positive for the New Year
Happy New Year everyone

and Special Thanks to lgkahn for all his help
P.S. another problem i found with the new SGS replacement phone is that the USB no longer mounts properly to enable Mass Storage option, as in it doesn't even detect itself as being connected to the PC, unless i reboot the SGS like 2 times to get it to detect it is connected to the USB port of a PC (this is after flashing to JL2, it seemed to be working fine on JH2)
Really? Thats not good news at all.
Bell is no longer sending them back for repairs. Instead, they are direct shipping new phones and if you have a Bell plan, they are giving $100 bill credits as well. Mine died for the third time on Wednesday night. Wasn't even using it at the time. Took it into the Bell Store yesterday morning and they just gave me a number to call saying the Vibrant policy had changed.
Waiting on an 850 band Nexus S to come out, then I'll sell of the Vibrant.
This is scary!!!

I'm still trying to find a way to make the Internal SD write properly, it might be a software bug on the JL2
I did try to reformat the Internal SD via the Recovery Mode, and it completed, but that doesn't mean crap because...
If i try to download a game, or apps it wont save to disk.
I purchased all for EA titles that were on sale for 99 cents
Sims3, Fifa 2010, Need for Speed Shift, Tetris.
All 3 of them except tetris you need to download the additional content
on my other 2 phones they will download and install just fine
on the Galaxy S nada, zip zero, it gets stuck at 5% download, then it jumps back to 0% download, and back to 5% and 0%
before i upgraded to JL2, i did the same install for all 4 games from market (when it was still on JH2) and they installed fine.
i cleared cache, i wipe, i did everything that i can think of, and still stuck with any install, download, or restore from titanium backup
I simply love Titanium Backup, it's so easy to test for a defective internal storage memory problem
that's the same way how it died in JK4 upgrade
i should have stayed on JH2/JK3

I was told 5 to 6 business days.
Forgot to mention in my previous reply.
The same Titanium Backup restore on my other phones they can restore completely successfully (Nesus S / Milestone XT720)
I'm only restoring the User Apps + User Data (no system apps, no system settings)
What do you mean by XT720 running smoother/better than SGS?
It's it a same old milestone with 700MHz or so CPU clock boost only?
Sure built quality kick SGS ass. but performance?

720 Mhz stock, but the CPU was actually under clocked according to tech specs
it can be unlocked or OCed back to 1000 Mhz
runs smoother than SGS even on 720 Mhz comparing eclair 2.1 to 2.1
the other neat thing with the Milestone XT720 is that it can do App2SD without Froyo 2.2
AllGamer have you tried unmounting and reformating the internal memory through settings rather than through the recovery menu. I had pretty similar issues before and I found it worked much better after that.
Call this number 1-888-751-4078 instead of the number from the other post about Montreal Centre etc...
This is a number I received by Social.Hub email support. Once you do call both numbers, automation system is different, with the number I post it goes straight to support without having to press any extensions and loop arounds.
Maybe both numbers end you up to same support depart? I don't know...
But this 1-800-726-7864 seems to a general number to Samsung.
Where as this 1-888-751-4078 seems to be a direct number to Samsung Mobile Canada. Operating hours are different too.
You can even google both numbers and see the type of results you get. Samsung gives out this 1-888-751-4078 and not the other.
But who knows maybe I talking useless info here and both will connect to same end.
Enjoy!

i'm open to suggestions, willing to try anything to revive the internal SD which seems like to be very corrupt, rather than being physically dead.
so far no luck
can you point me to the topic you are talking about?
i've tried a lot of stuff, and losing track of what i've done already
I am now on phone #4.
My last one was a 10.11 and it last a day and 1/2 before dying. The Bell employee also guaranteed me that phone. It came with Froyo Jk4. Just got back from the store and got a 10.12 which came with Eclair for some reason. It appear to already be dying 10 minutes into use. Apps are failing to install. I am beyond pissed and frustrated.
So let me get this right,
You got the phone, backed everything up, and restored it with no problems,
Then wiped it and applied fixes / roots and other stuff, and then are surprised that
its dying / died.
Looks to me that one of the tweaks, fixes, hacks that youve installed is the
problem, and its not the phone that's at fault

[Q] How to access files on damaged Razr M

I have a Razr M with a broken screen. The damage is to the upper left hand corner. The phone actually worked for several days like this, then just stopped. I can not tell what mode it's in or anything at this point. When I plug it in to charge, the green LED lights for a few seconds then goes out. Not sure if this is normal, as this was my sons phone and I never used it. Of course my son doesn't know either. Go figure. The phone was in an Otterbox (Defender Series) when it experianced a crushing force....
The issue is that I need to get his personal info and pictures off the phone before we send it back. (We had insurance).
So the question is:
How can I tell if the phone turned on. (We've pressed so many buttons etc...)
Is there a way to reset the phone to restart, so we can be sure it's on.
How can I access the files? (Is there a keystroke to power it up in USB mode?
The phone is the Razr M (XT907) from Verizon. I have down loaded and installed the motorola drivers on my PC, but no luck there. I'm no expert, but the damage seems really limited to the upper left hand corner, front and back side. I have watched several Youtube video's and don't believe anything super critial is located there, just the rear speaker on back and LED on front. The glass has broken (cracked) further down a bit, and I can see inside the phone just a little. The inner structure (plastic with the LED inside for thoise famliar with the insides) is mint.
ANY help would be appreciated. Thank you!

I would plug the charger for a while maybe like ½-1 hour the green light coming on then off is a sign that the phone recognizes its getting power then started to charge... after some time on the charger take it off hold down both the power + volume down for 10-15 seconds I'd give it a minute or so then plug it in to the USB of your PC ... if all is well you should get the screen pop and be able to access the pictures... as far as contacts and what not your Sol.... you should be able to reset it via stock recovery without seeing it if you know where each selection is but I couldn't tell you as its been way to long since I've had the stock recovery... hope it helps good luck

Thats what i thought. It seems to me that the glass/ touchscreen is all thats damaged. Unfortunatly this phone was never hooked to a PC in it's short 3 month life. I don't know if it's even set up for USB or what the default settings are.
I do know my son had a pattern lock screen. I wonder if this affects it's ability to connect via USB assuming it's on and powered up.

I did this and still nothing. My PC acts like it's not even there. I just get the green light for few seconds then nothing. The phone should be charged as I left it all night on the charger, but I plugged it in for about 30 minutes then unplugged and tried this. Nothing. Odd how it was working just fine 2 days ago with the same damage. Of course two days ago my son didn't ask me to back anything up either. Lesson learned I guess.
This was one reason I didn't like this phone. If my phone locks up, I can pull the battery. Then I KNOW its off. I can't tell what state this phone is in or even if I can shut it down or access anything with damged screen being blank. If the above method should force it to pop up as a USB drive, then I'm afraid something else has fried. I have until tommorrow or so to try anything else.

This might go without saying, but just in case... you need to make sure you have Motorola's device drivers installed on your computer. You can find them here: https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/prod_answer_detail/a_id/89608/p/30,6720,8577

Yep, did that first thing last night.
I don't believe the phone is set up for USB, of course I cant access it now..
I believe the PC driver software installed OK.
If the PC doesn't recognize it, you're not even booting. If it wasn't set up for USB, the computer would see it but not be able to access anything. Odd, because you should be able to.
So what happened before it went dead? Did you leave it on and let it go dead?
If not, your circuit board may be broken, in which case you're SOL

here's a shot in the dark:
there is an app called "Plan B" on the google play store. the app was designed for folks to install it on their device AFTER the phone went missing (this is assuming, of course, that the phone is turned on and is able to send/receive data). from this app, I think you can back up your contacts, pictures, etc. so, see if you can turn the phone on (you should see the green LED light up) by pressing and holding the power button for 3 seconds. then, via your PC, go to the google play store (sign into whose ever account was setup with google), and install Plan B (or lookout). I think google device manager may do the same thing, but that could require you to go into the phone and adjust the settings.
going forward, I would advise folks to use google as their ONLY source for contacts - that way, when they change phones, reset devices, flash, etc., all of that information will download automatically.
regarding pics/vids, I would suggest to make sure that folks set their camera to save to the external SD card - that way, all you need to do is pop out the sd card, and all of them will be saved there. or, you can upload them to picasa web album (google's online photo/video storage).
hope this helps, and good luck.

Don't know. It's my sons phone, I knew it was broken, but I also saw that it was working. He never mentionad a word about storing stuffon his internal memory as opposed to the SD card. It was only after it stopped working did he say anything about it.
I'm real curiuous now, had he had extremely private info on there, passwords to bank accounts, credit card info etc... how would aperson be sure when you send a phone back it doesn't get recyled, repaired? I know they would wipe it clean, but I also know for a fact that anyone in this type of industry will look around first before wipingh it. Do bad I cant destroy the phone further to avoid it being even considered for repair and not just the incinerator. :silly:

Don't know. It's my sons phone, I knew it was broken, but I also saw that it was working. He never mentionad a word about storing stuffon his internal memory as opposed to the SD card. It was only after it stopped working did he say anything about it.

That shouldn't be an issue. Assuming they can get it booted, they'll probably go to recovery to check for root. They don't need to boot it all the way. Chances are the insides of the phone might be reused, but there's not much that you can do about that unless you want to just buy a new one...

i really would not worry about that. my banking app does not store my password on it, and this phone is not compatible with google wallet. also, when they get these devices, the first thing they do (I would imagine) is to do a complete factory reset. given that the phone is damaged, there is really nothing that they can do.
a new thought though - I think there is an app called airdroid that allows you to view your phone's screen on your computer. see if that works.
