Here's the fuss about the price - Xoom General

Lets start this off right.
If you post on this forum, then your an Android fanboy. It's just like that.
That being said, you get defensive and want to defend your product, I know I do.
But here lies the issue. The Xoom is over priced. Period.
Fact - There are Tegra 2 tabs out there on the market. Heck, one of them is even a 10.1 incher! - http://www.techbargains.com/news_displayItem.cfm/242175
What's that? Its priced at 399.00 normal and 369.00 on sale? But this is brand new technology and top notch stuff!
Yes, the G - Tablet IS out and running a Tegra 2 processor, as are a few others.
My point is this. This tablet has nearly everything the Xoom has. Add a front a rear camera and a slightly nicer screen, and 512MB RAM (all relatively cheap for manufacturers) and this price doesn't double.
So please, someone explain how an android tablet priced at 400 can literally double in price based on 2 minor upgrades and FREE software ( Android 3.0)

I will absolutely agree that it is overpriced. However the tablet you linked is a piece of garbage, worse screen, no 3g, and no cameras.
All that stuff isn't worth 400 dollars no doubt, but it should be higher priced than the viewsonic. I'd pay 600 for the xoom easy.

I think that for the Xoom in its current incarnation, $650 would be the sweet spot in my mind; knock off a hundy for the "rumored" WiFi only model and I'm sold. $800 with required VZW activation and 1 month data is far too high. It still surprises me that they think this is how they're going to sell the most. I would think that they'd want to get as many out there as they can, like Apple did. I know people don't like to make the comparison to 1 year old hardware, but we have to remember that when the ipad first came out it was cutting edge tech and they still managed lower prices than this. When Apple is price competitive you know your costs are too high. Also, once they throw down on ipad 2 or whatever you have to believe they're going to keep the same pricing scheme, they definitely tend to maintain the same price structure.

Bang on. Agree with you completely. I'd buy in line for 650, for 800 and they've lost me. I'll buy an iPad 2 to replace my iPad.

To all above , I agree the sweet spot for this would be ~650. I was ready to put down when a pre order came out. I'm just disappointed.
And yes, I know the G - Tablet has an inferior screen. I just used it as a point of reference to a price point done right for the market. Tack and extra 100 - 150 to make up for inferiorities to a WiFi only Xoom and there is the entry price for a successful tablet.

$400 is about my limit for this type of device. You can get an HP slate 500 for about the same price as the Xoom and it's got a Ton more capability and it's still a first gen device.
excitment is over inflating the real value of these devices, everyone be patient don't purchase and they'll come down and start being more opened up.

Oh I agree, $800 is too much for this tablet. The hardware and software don't justify the cost.
That said, it doesn't change the fact that I'm still likely to get one. It's at the top end of my limit, but I'll still be there on the 14th or 17th or 24th, whenever the hell it comes out.
Why? Because I'm an early adopter. I buy crap like this the day it comes out, and I pay a premium for it. I had an iPad on day one, and honestly, I don't like crapple products. If it wasn't for my wife watching netflix on it I would have post it on ebay or craigslist a long time ago.
And yes, the G tablet is comparable in hardware for a much lower price (even though it is a piece of junk).
The xoom has a key feature though, Honeycomb. I'm sure they worked a lot with Google to get Honeycomb working smoothly, so to say it was free isn't quite accurate, no doubt cheap, but not free. It still costs them money to implement and update (assuming Motorola won't pull a Cliq and will update it.)
Motorola is banking on the fact that Honeycomb will sell this for them, and it will.
I've got 30 days to return it right? I may do so, I may not, we'll see.

Not trying to get into an argument here, but...
Have you ever actually used the 500? Sure, by running Windows it's got 'a ton more capability', in theory. In practice, it's a pain to use because it's severely underpowered. We evaluated that device and easily concluded it was not fit for two main reasons: first, it's too sluggish, and second, Windows is not designed for a touch interface. It just doesn't work.
Whatever your feelings are on price with the Xoom, comparing it's usability to the HP Slate is a fail. The proof is in the pudding: the slate has sold poorly, even in the corporate environment.

Also another thing to add to the long list, new mobile chip sets are coming next year. Some tablets we could see next year could feature up to 8 gigabytes of ram. You may say LOLWUT, but it's damn true. So why would I as a consumer pay 700-800 bucks for an entry level tablet? I am considering buying a Nook Color and waiting for a proper gingerbread port or buy the new Huawei tablet, or even the next cheap tegra 2 tablet from Velocity Micro which will probably be $250-300.

Not really the case for me, It's just that 4gb-8gb of RAM is a big difference of tablet performance from 500 mb/1gb of ram... especially for 700-800 dollars.
Thats why I'm probably going to be purchasing the Nook Color which is literally half the power of the Xoom.

Yeah, you can't really comparer the NC to the Xoom, they're totally different. One is a hacked up device to become a tablet, the other sets the stage for the latest in tablet hardware and software. Not that your making an exact comparison, but they're just so different you can't argue them on the same field.
I had the NC, I took it back. Just too slow even on basic web pages and stock android.
I wonder how long it's going to be before your account is closed for a name change, no matter how you spell it, it's still offensive.

I wonder if Moto has folks looking thru the rants on the net about their potential pricing. 800 + verizon + tax = DOA as most ppl put it... Of course some early adoptors will buy, but Moto will have to do a rethink after the first wave of sales (if there is a wave and not a ripple)...

Yah, I wanted the Xoom so bad my self . I have a sealed Samsung Galaxy Tab which I was going to sell and get the Moto Xoom but, if the Xoom is really over $700.00 which is my budget then, I will just open my Samsung Tab and Root it and enjoy it!! Im sure there are a few good cheaper Tablets on the way so , will just wait a few months and see what is on the way

$700 for the 32GB model? Hmm...
The price is way to high. $400 tops.
That isn't cheap by any means but keep in mind that the wifi model should be quite a bit cheaper than this, wouldn't be holding my breath for $400 though.

WTF is Moto thinking here?
These price leaks have FAIL written all over them. No eff'in way will you see me shell out more than $500 for a glorified internet browser/PSP. Make a port of a useful program like Eclipse and a way to write and run code... and we'll talk.
The use cases for tablets are out there, but none of them are compelling enough to price in the laptop range. I mean, this thing is a beast spec wise, but offers less than 1/3rd of the functionality. Can I write code, model 3d... etc? Damn it, $200 more and I could buy an eff'ing macbook (w/ student discount).
I'm not sure I understand who their target market its. I am in the market for a tablet, but that flat out prices me OUT of that tablet. It's a 1st generation, no history, no followers that want an upgrade...nothing like that. Everyone I know that has an iPad is happy with it and I don't think they are going to pull many from that market (especially the apple-holics). While I'm glad to see the price drop from $800 to $700.....that is a $hit ton of coin for a gadget. I know tablets are more than "just" gadgets but I'm willing to guess most of us have laptop, smartphones, and PCs....so in that sense, it is sorta like a new gadget cuz we clearly don't "need" it.
I really don't understand how they justify this price with virtually no track record.
I'd like to point the finger at Apple for this one. They've effectively set the bar for price point with the iPad and now all other manufacturers are following suit.
What these other companies (Moto, Samsung, etc.) need to understand is that Apple charges as much as they do because they can, people will pay for the image.
Android tablets, in my mind, should be priced significantly lower in order to move units and undercut Apple. Why would they ever charge more, or even the same, when Apple already has such a strangle hold on the market? I can almost guarantee that these Android tablets will be dead on arrival (as far as general public/mass market appeal) if they charge iPad prices or above. With the iPad 2 just around the corner these Android tablets really need all the help they can get, especially if they want to win over Apple customers. Even if Android has more functionality than iOS general consumers will still see the iPad as being the best option, and the result will be Android being eclipsed by the iPad 2 launch (at least for initial release).
I'm all for the potential of tablet computing but as someone stated before, and this is bang on in my mind, laptop prices with 1/3 of the functionality. So why would I pay that and why do I need one?
I really hope Moto can win me over with functionality and pricing because the closer we get to a release date the less I think I want one of these tablets.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Up until now I was 100% sure I wanted a XOOM. It's the standard that Google is using to base Honeycomb on, all of their developers have one. It's the flagship tablet for Honeycomb and they're killing it by trying to match Apple's price on the iPad. Very big mistake, and I have serious doubts on how well this thing is going to sale. Compare it to the Asus EEEPad Transformer who's prices are much lower and if Engadget is right, it even comes with the keyboard dock. I just don't understand.

Totally agree. If they price it at laptop level, it has to be able to REPLACE the laptop, so yeah, Eclipse would be cool for us devs (with a bluetooth keyboard, obviously). Although for the average user, most usual apps are available (most people have a computer for internet browsing and the Office apps).
As for the Xoom price vs iPad, in my mind it absolutely HAS to be lower than the pad. Significantly. No one in the real world is going "oh, I wish I could buy this Android Xoom tablet, but it's too expensive, I'll just go with the iPad instead...". It's the other way around, which is why it has to be significantly cheaper to steal some tablets customers. Many of my friends don't even know what's Android!
Sadly like many of you its not looking good for me getting one of these. Looks like I'll be waiting on an iPad 2. Moto really looks like they'll be screwing the pooch on this one.
You guys are mostly wrong, did you even look at ipad prices? This thing is priced competitively and is ****ting on the ipad in terms of specs, so you expect something with massive spec bump to be cheaper, I'm confused. And high end laptops don't cost anywhere around $700. You're comparing a cheap laptop to the highest spec tablet out there, nor do I believe you guys are looking at the full potential of tabs, by the end of the year your tab will be like another screen in your home with Comcast for 1 example, $700 and I'm getting one on day 1. To the Guy who said this should cost less then the ipad, that's a ****ing joke right?
Actually I don't know why I'm wasting my time, I'm in a room with a bunch of people under 10 posts lol
I thought more about this last night and this morning. I had all sorts of justifcations in mind for why I would need (want ) the Xoom and I was willing to hold out for it. But the price is rediculous and simply NOT justifiable for some.
This price has really turned me off. I'm seriously thinking about just getting a Nook Color, rooting it, and calling that good. Honeycomb was my hope, Gingerbread will be fine for $250 thannkyouverymuch.
Although I may wait about February 15th so I can utilize the 14 day return policy just in case.....the Xoom price drops

As I said, most people don't know what's Android, everybody knows what's an iPhone/iPad. They want that thing with the Apple, so yeah, it has to be cheaper than the iPad (well, than the iPad 2, obviously, the iPad 1 will drop in price when the new one comes out). I know the specs of the Xoom are crazy (but please don't compare that to a high end laptop) but just look at the reactions out there, no one's excited about the current price leaks.

Not much to add... As for where I live, hint: look at the flag... Yep, some people in the great North don't know about Android. Crazy, eh?

It is very possible to buy an extremely capable laptop now-a-days for between $500-$800. Yes the XOOM is impressive spec wise (for tablets) at the moment but a month after its release the iPad 2 will be here and suddenly Moto's offering won't exactly be "****ting" on anything anymore.
Also, I just want to be clear that I'm not saying the iPad is better than the XOOM or any other Android offering, I'm just trying to look at this from a general consumer's point of view.

Not to mention that most of the posts here bring up good points and are well written. We may have less posts than you but that doesn't mean much if you pride yourself on posting 'quality' comments such as this.
Who are we kidding? We're all buying this tablet. lol
I just hope we get it here in Canada for $700 and not some bull**** price of $749.99+ or whatever. Our dollar is par now.
I'd sure like the WiFi only version, since by then I'll have the Atrix (coming to Bell), no need for 2 3G devices.

At $800 I still think I'll be picking it up pending a couple of confirmations.
The first being that the HDMI outputs the entire screen like on the Notion Ink Adam, and not like my EVO with only outputting from 2 specific applications.
Second is that they won't require a charge/service to activate WiFi. I have no interest in mobile data. If I need access where I don't usually have it I can tether it to my phone.
I want honeycomb, and I want the higher resolution screen over the Adam, so I'm willing to pay more for them. Until it's released or an official price (rather than a leaked possibly faked/mocked up ad) I'll have to wait and see.
same. my nexus one tethers very well. With unlimited 3g plan from tmobile, im all set on data.
I voted that the Xoom is too expensive for my taste. To be honest, the Toshiba tablet is actually better spec'd than the Xoom. I think I'm going to wait for that one. It's rumored to be $500 wifi only.
I'm getting it regardless. My verizon account is under a military suspension until I re-activate it at no charge, and I currently have a $160 credit on it lol. I just found out, so it's almost like I'm getting it for $640. Hopefully it gets subsidized by vzw for 300, then I can just get it and cancel, then really get it for $650.
I'm not worried about price, it will get worked out... all this talk about the price should show motorola there is a huge consumer demand for their tablet.
I'm a no but with a caveiat. I don't need a 32 gig tablet. If Moto comes out with a 16 gig version that would fall more in line with my price point.

I'll bite if the price is $700 without this bogus wifi activation fee.
But rather than buying first day, I'm now planning on waiting to see if TMo's G-Slate is any good. I doubt there will be Xoom shortages, so I see no reason to be first-in-line.
Yes. I don't think there'll be any shortages.
Although I can't see LG going significantly (or any) lower than the xoom given its 3d features.

I'm on board with existing conditions. Notion Ink Adam is still vapor to me. As much as I applaud their David and Goliath struggle that is increasing rare, I must face facts. There is no guarantee that they will be around in 2 years, hell they could be hemorrhaging funds and be under in the next 6 months.
I also don't think the 1.2" smaller screen on the LG G-Slate will make up for the extra 5mp camera, and 120hz capable screen. Plus, who the hell asked for 3D in a tablet. It's as bad as Sprint's stupid kyocera dual screen phone. It's an industry first AND LAST.
Toshiba Tablet seems like a botched job. How does a tablet get a fancy photoshop/flash website before a name . I don't suspect there will be many cheap tablets this year without sacrifices in quality. Example the semi-crappy screen in the Viewsonic G-Tablet I returned.
It's XOOM XOOM XOOM for me. I just hope I can hold back the tears when I charge 963$ for the XOOM and the Folio case.

How much do you think it would drop? I don't think there is much difference between the 16/32gb memory anymore. I highly doubt that the difference is more the $50 and that is probably a high estimate!
16 is standard on almost all new/upcoming devices. I think all the vendors are just depleting their stocks.
I think Toshiba has learned from the Folio 100 tablet disaster, and the will come with a much better product. Not too many companies get a second chance in such a short period of time.

One possible issue I have with the G-Slate is lack of an SD card slot. I've been looking at images and reading through descriptions, and not only is there no sign of a slot, but it looks like they're marketing it as a device with 32GB storage... period. Also, I agree that the 3D is pointless and unnecessary, but I'm still willing to give the tablet a fair shake.
If all reports are wrong, and the Xoom is closer to $650, I'll buy it on day one. If it's between $700 and $800, I'm waiting for another month. After all, we know that HTC and Asus are in the mix as well.
I think we need the option of "I will when the price comes down".
I told myself i would cringe and jump for the 700 price point. 800 - that is hard to justify. Yes, people, i know it's comprable to the ipad (with those specs), which is why i bought an iPad off craigslist for under 400 bucks - because it met my price point. I could literally take a weeklong cruise for the same price.
As for the contract - no thanks, this will be on wifi unless I am on a road trip or something. Even then - the Evo does wifi hotspot.

Looking around the market, I don't see much room for the XOOM to drop. After owning a Viewsonic G-Tablet, I think I see the shape of 500$ tablets. That tablet was good, except that it skimped on pretty much everything. It had a substandard screen(bad viewing angles), substandard touch sensitivity, a finicky wifi adapter(possibly software), and it seems that they installed the accelerometer wrong. Apps that only ran in portrait were always upside down.
I am not sure, but I think the Toshiba Folio 100 was only marginally less of a train wreck. A $650 XOOM would be fantastic, but maybe impossible. I think the iPad is only as cheap as it is because of some unique and smart investments by Apple, and their extremely iterative process of baby steps forward. This cheapens their process. Also they can, not saying they are, take a loss on the tablet, or use a razer thin profit margin and make it up in apps. Motorola has to make their money on the XOOM itself, Apple can play a different game. Then again there is a company with no buying power, Notion Ink, that confounds me. Perhaps the industry has me brainwashed.
I want to just go to sleep and wake up on the 24th.
DCVIPERBOY. There is no contract. Just Verizon forcing you to pay for one month of service to ensure they make some money on this.
Anyone see the FCC report on engadget? Looks like the wifi version is passing through. Hoping it'll launch the same day as the 3g/4g version. 650 could put moto back in the game.

If there's a wifi only version of the Xoom I'd really consider it...
I dont need a 3g plan with a tablet - I can use my phone as a hotspot for that if need be.... why would I want to pay twice monthly?
also I'd hope it would be cheaper wifi only ;p
Buying, but waiting for wifi only. Evo with wifi router ftw.
i will be getting it regardless of the price. my wife and i are getting an very good return and we figured that we can spend money on something that we really want but probably wont be able to get later. We agreed we can spoil ourselves with one thing then we will use rest for our move. Im usually not an first adopter but i first time for everything

I hope it doesn't bomb, but I think it will. If it is a success, I will be surprised.
My hope is that the other companies planning on launching Honeycomb tablets learn a little from this (likely) failed launch and try to avoid the many mistakes made by Verizon, Best Buy, and Motorola. I'm more interested in Honeycomb succeeding than the Xoom or any one device, but this has not been a good start.
I posted the first comment there, to me he seems to be a huge Apple fan lol.
"You got it all wrong, they have been vocal winning best of CES a bit over a month ago when it was announced and then again during MWC a few days ago. Meanwhile we heard directly from the CEO a week back on the exact pricing of the 3G model and WIFI version. Meanwhile commercials have been airing regularly.
Also if you want to compare this next gen tablet to the old dominant one, I feel you must compare at least the price of the WIFI only model with the same 32gb gives you the exact same $599.99, I feel you are giving an overly Apple biased argument when you put a dual core 1ghz CPU up against a single core as well as the Xoom having 4 times the ram, expandable data space through a microSD slot, HDMI out, a front and rear facing camera a true widescreen with 16:10 aspect ratio running at a higher resolution on what some are saying is the best tablet operating system to date.
Yes I'm planing on picking one up on Thursday and I feel it will more then likely out feature the iPad 2 as well.
Typed from my iPad."
The video of the last Engadget podcast had a valid point. When Android first came out, the iPhone was thought to be an insurmountable force. It was believed that there was no chance of it succeeding against the iPhone. Not only did it exceed expectations, it seems to have exceeded the iPhone period.
The XOOM is a real tablet, moreso than anything in existence. It is more capable than the iPad in both functionality and in the fact that it's a tablet OS designed on a tablet for a tablet. It's not a desktop OS on a tablet like Windows 7, or a phone OS lazily modified for a tablet like iOS. This means that, while the XOOM 3G may not be ringing true to the tune of some people's wallets/budgets, it will do well among many of the people who have been waiting for a real tablet, like me. I don't know how many of me there are, but we will know in a month. Also, we will know even moreso when the WiFi-Only version is released, which I pray is no later than the end of Q1 2011 b.k.a March. The first thing I will be doing is making a series of videos showcasing the power of video streaming on the device. My phone can handle streaming of AVI.. but I haven't managed to stream 1080p MKV yet.
Your question should be more will XOOM fail period, because launch is not a fair indicator. By price alone, the original launch will possibly be underwhelming. Many people will be waiting for the cheaper WiFi-only version. Others will be waiting to see if the device has a locked bootloader, while some may be waiting for LG, Samsung(though I can't see why anyone would trust them after they abandoned the Galaxy Tab 1 after less than 6 months), or the multitude of other tablets. Some people will also be waiting(futilely) for the sure to be underwhelming iPad 2 announcement of 1 or 2 real improvements and a bunch more fancy bull. The last group will still be on the fence about needing a tablet. You might see a fair uptick in a few months before the next school year if any of these proves useful for students.
The sheer amount of options in the next 6 months is really going to make it hard to gauge the success of Honeycomb, which is the real question. It's about Honeycomb, not the XOOM.
The Xoom will fail. I don't even know if I'll buy one anymore, and I was the biggest fan of it after CES. If I buy one, it will likely be the wifi version. The nail in that coffin is the ridiculous restrictions on activation. Requiring 3g activation, plus charging $200 more for a 3g/4g radio is outrageous. I don't think I would have even taken a second look at the $800 price tag if I 1) didn't have to pay more to activate, and 2) didn't know that they're charging $200 just for the 3g radio.
We have to vote with our wallets, and my wallet says that a 3g/4g radio isn't worth $200 and carrier restrictions will not be tolerated.

I think the launch will fail as far as selling a high amount of units and establishing a brand name. Once the iPad 2 and other Honeycomb tablets hit the market, the playing field will be a lot different than it is now. The Xoom will be forgotten about. Even if it isn't forgotten about, it'll be VERY hard for Motorola to get a good amount of sales with it. Since the G-Slate and GT 10.1 are so evenly matched, the sales will basically be split. Unless one of the tablets are much cheaper than the others and has decent television marketing.

This is not true. Something I watched today, maybe the Engadget podcast, said that the G-Slate is going to be 1000$. This is perfectly believable because its got what the XOOM has + useless 3D features. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 is not evenly matched. It has a smaller size but IIRC it's missing a microSD card slot, hdmi, and usb. The only way to get USB, and maybe HDMI is to use hard to find PDMI cables. It might be cheaper out the gate, but any discount will be mitigated or obliterated by the need to pay high price pdmi adapters that 99.9% of us don't have.
I think we will see the WiFi-Only 32GB version released around iPad 2 time for 600$. I am hoping they release a 16GB version too to compete at the 500$ price point, but I don't think it will matter. Honeycomb will not be for people who are happy with the iPad, as such I don't think the 500$ price point is as important as people think.
Of course, only time will tell.

$1000 converted from UK currency?
Devices in other countries always cost much more than they do in the US. Heck, the Optimus 2X is like $750 if you convert Korean currency to US dollars. I hardly believe that will be the final price. Was $1200 the final price of the Xoom? No it wasn't. Even with 3D technology, it still won't release anywhere around that.

Well no one really thought the XOOM was 1200$. Apple fanboys perpetuated that nonsense to hurt the device, but it was obviously a placeholder price as they always are.
About the 1000$.. I just heard it on Engadget podcast, I expected them to use US money. If its 1000$ GBP.. that's crappy reporting. Though I have to say I don't see the LG being competitive with 3G. I'm going to be so i can preorder a xoom in 9 hours

There is a huge "Netral" camp of comsumers out there, who should really be the primary target of both Apple and Non-Apple tablet producers.
From this perspective, if , assuming Apple follows the same style by releasing iPad 2 at 499/599/699 for wifi-only version and reduce iPad 1 by 100 USD for each level, XOOM has a VERY VERY hard time to justify its 800 price tag with comparable iPad 2, whose functionality is rumored to be comparable to current "state-of-art" tablets.
And one important point, from marketing point of view,
1. Still a lot of people are seen as very cool by carrying an apple product around, but not by carrying a Dell/Motorola around. Sony may be better.
2. Was there ever/is there going to be a long line like the one on first launching day of iPhone 4 for Motorola's XOOM? where it is gonna be? Best Buy's store front???
Again, I am not an Apple fanboy, and in fact, I hate their arrogant attitude and monopoly behavior (subscription policy etc etc), but just at the time I am about to happily find the best Android tablet come out to compete with iPad, I saw the price tag... ouch! Unfortunate decision, They thought their brand carry such a premium???

Correction. LG won't be competitive with 3D, not 3G.
I am simply stating that anyone who thought the 1200$ price was legit is either an idiot, a noob, or intentionally fear mongering. I knew instantly that 1200$ was the typical price holder we always see initially in BBY and other retailers systems in the month(s) leading up to a release. When the HTC EVO first showed up in systems it was listed at well over 1500$, thought I don't recall the number. So if someone is knowledgeable of the industry, and thought 1200$ was legit, they are an idiot. If they were knowledgeable and perpetuated the price, like most of the Engadget raging commenters, they are a fearmongering Apple/Palm/Nokia-boy. Or simply a troll.
I currently choose Android. I do not pretend that Apple is complete crap. They serve a purpose, and I can see that. A fanboy is someone who can't see that.
I wonder what your issue is that you call me immature.

I hate to compare anything with the idevices. But when you first see the $800 price tag. It makes everybody thinks motorola over price it compared to the ipad. but come on, the ipad has only half the features in the xoom. 64 gb ipad with wifi plus 3g is $829. that's $30 more than the xoom. The only thing that version has over the xoom is storage. Xoom on the other hand has sd card slot.
For the record, I just check best buy site yesterday. pre order is now on back order, so are the accessories. I'm just not sure if I can trust that source though. Seemed pretty fast.
ps: I was the first one pre order the thing at my local best buy.

The Xoom accessories were "backordered" right off the bat at BB.com. They were never in stock.
It comes with no flash.... So yes.
You have to download flash 10.1 from the market. Flash will work w/ this tab.

Let motorola know this!

We all just saw the ipad 2 (march 11, 499$)
Not sure if moto just wants to throw away thier sales
but let them know about it, pressure is good

I don't know. 550 maybe but not 500.

Even if iPad is a better selling more desired product, 550 - 600 sounds right. 500 would just be to compete, but the extra specs and capabilities warrant a 550 - 600 price tag.
Unfortunately, most people don't care about the better specs. But Moto can't just give those away.
fair enough, id happily dish out 550
but they need to announce the dam thing, and get it on the shelves
Totally agree. They are losing shares and sales as we speak.

I am sure they are aware of what is going on with their competition. They already have a UK WiFi only model about to be released and there were even leaked ads with pre-order info. They also already announced a WiFi only for US around $600 coming. We all want things now. I waited over a year to get a Honeycomb tablet and it was worth the wait. Google should have anticipated this earlier and had this out last year. I think their mistake was spending too much time and resources on ChromeOS which I have zero interest in. But here we are, the beginning of an exciting year of Android tablets and Honeycomb.
I obviously know they're aware, not sure if I came off that way
What I went is let them know the customers are demanding something or else theyll lose them for being complacent

I am sure we will have a wifi only version of the Xoom next month. But what we really need is for some of these other companies to get their stuff out as well so their are more choices and competition. It seems like Google decided to give Motorola all the love for the first honeycomb tablet which is why we are not seeing any others release now. This may have been to fine tune the OS before making it more widely available to others, I don't know for sure. But the bottom line is, Honeycomb tablets are not going away and I suspect we will see so many by the end of the year it will be difficult to decide which to buy.

If they (Google + Manufacturer) want to win the tablet war, they must do drastic movement: Sell them CHEAP! As cheap as possible ...
Don't take too much profit, break even is OK, even lost!
Just take a lot of users whatever the cost is!
Then pump the apps apps and apps as much as possible.
For sure, this will win the tablet war.
About loosing money, if I remember correctly, Microsoft did not make any profit on the earlier Xbox/360. And they are now very competitive.
PRICE IS EVERYTHING for this LEVEL of device. Remember, PRICE is the key for users to buy tablet.
With less money, people can buy iPad 2 which is more or less the same "experience" to use AND has tons of very good quality of apps.
Set aside that SD Card slot (iPad has 64GB model) and OS customization. Those are nice, but for majority they are less important. They dont stare for hours in the home screen!
Come on Google, you can do it.

Action..not words
Moto CEO has said that wifi-only Xoom will be around $600. That's pretty reliable, but by no means cast in stone. Another pricing signal is the the UK pre-order peep, which was for £500, or close to $600 US once the 20% VAT is removed.
That said, iPad2 is the undisputed tablet leader, and with the Xoom's dearth of software support (and missing features, like SD slot and Flash), having a price higher than the base iPad price is a death knell, especially with other cheaper Honeycomb alternatives on tap.
Come April, I'd expect the wifi Xoom to be toeing the $500 price point, as will many of the so-called premium vendors (HTC, Samsung, et al). Other vendors like Acer & Dell, who don't have smartphone offerings to protect their pricing, will be cheaper, and with the same specs.

Sorry to correct you, but you can't just do a straight conversion in price from GBP to USD and call it a day. There is a VAT etc. in the UK and the prices are inflated. Take about 20%-25% off the price and you'll be more in the ballpark of what the US will pay for the WiFi version. $600USD sounds about right, $200 less than the 3G version. I would not be surprised at all (well, maybe a little) if the WiFi version also coincides with a 3G/4G price drop.
I agree with what you're saying and I don't think you're alone. Motorola will notice (or has noticed already) that they're gonna get slaughtered if they don't have a WiFi version, and dont lower the prices to be AT LEAST competitive, if not undercutting, the competition. And they gotta do it like yesterday.
I want to be positive and say that Motorola know what they're doing, but the way that they launched only the 3G version with no word on the WiFi one is just sad. My theory, which I don't think is any secret, is that Verizon has Motorola by the balls, and is trying to get as much out of the 3G version as possible before the WiFi comes out. They wanna ride the wave and the early adopters and then let the WiFi out. There is no single manufacturing reason why the WiFi model isn't ready right now. Its on their freaking product webpage ffs (along with the GSM variant I might add) lol.

I really hope so, for Motorola's sake. That $499 price point is one that gives you way more exposure than anything. Like I said I think they're trying to ride the "first honeycomb tablet" wave until they get shafted by iPad 2 and the other 3.0 tablets coming out, then they'll play ball and maybe get some decent sales numbers.
I've said before that I'm 100% willing to hand Motorola (or Samsung/LG, for that matter) $600 right now for the WiFi version of this type of tablet, but I'm not gonna overpay for the 3G version I'm not gonna use. The $500 point just has to happen for general consumers to put it next to the iPad though.
Youre right about the price. The price isnt what concerns me. Its just the availability and lack of announcements
I agree with you, Verizon has them by the balls

The one thing that Apple gets right is they don't late carriers push them around with the iPad. They sell it directly from Apple.com either the WiFi version or 3G with no strings attached and if u wanna activate later you can. No carrier BS. Not to mention that the 3G and WiFi versions go on sale the same exact day lol.
Motorola is getting blown up hard over their pricing and availability of different models/versions. I think they probably would've started selling the WiFi now if it weren't for other pressures/commitments.

Even at the lower price and added hardware specs the device still will not even come close to what Apple will see in sales. One thing Apple has done well and continues to do well is advertise. This unfortunately is where Moto is lacking with the Xoom. Superbowl commercial was nice and money well spent. But what have we seen since then? If you stopped 30 random people on the street and asked them what a Motorola Xoom was, maybe 15 of 30 would know. You would be hard pressed to find someone who did not know what an iPad was. Every night when I am watching the tube, I see that damn iPad commercial with the annoying piano in the background. Moto needs to take a risk and pour some funds in to advertisement. They now have a solid piece of hardware to compete with Apple. Let the rest of the world know that and get aggressive with your attack.
I don't think $550-$600 is too much to ask for this fine piece of hardware and if they want to make an attempt to keep up with the competition, Moto needs to get the WiFi only version out fast. Next Friday is coming up quick and still no word from Moto on a US release date. :/

In the past week I've seen a lot of xoom commercials, far more than iPad, although I'm sure my brain has tuned them out by now.
That vendetta one is on every hour.

Fusion Garage slashes $200 from Grid 10′s price tag

http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/fusion-garage-slashes-200-from-grid-10s-price-tag/
Fusion Garage takes notes from HP's fire sale of the TouchPad and reduces the price of it's upcoming Grid 10 tablet by $200.
There is a new trend in the tablet market, and it is a trend that we are very excited about. There has been a trend of low price tablets coming to the market, and HP’s TouchPad is to thank for it. Fusion Garage is the latest company to follow suit by chopping $200 off the price of its still unreleased tablet the Grid 10. The new price on Fusion Garage’s website has the new base price as a reasonable $299.
When the Grid 10 was announced in a faux press conference, it was announced at an industry standard $499 for a 10-inch tablet. With the good news of the price drop there is of course bad news, the release date has been pushed back from September 16 to October 1. If you purchased Fusion Garage’s original tablet the Joo Joo you will get a Grid 10 for free, so the price drop doesn’t really effect you.
The size and price of the Grid 10 were really the only two similar characteristics with other tablets on the market. Fusion Garage created a new operating system called Grid, which was built from the Android kernel. Technically the Grid 10 is not called an Android tablet, even though it can run Android apps. As the name implies the Grid OS uses a huge grid as the main user interface. You us the grid to organize your applications and folders, and it appears to be a very intuitive system.
As stated earlier we can thank HP for slashing the price of the HP TouchPad to $99, and selling out in less than a day. This business model proved that people are willing to buy a tablet without an Apple logo, if the price is right. Prior to the TouchPad the majority of tablets on the market were content with matching the iPhone $499 price tag. We have recently heard about Amazon’s 7-inch Amazon tablet coming out will be half the price of the iPad, and hopefully we will see more tablets follow suit.
Will this price cut cause more people to buy the Grid 10, or is it just too new and unproven to gain traction no matter the price point?
Is there anything more to this C&P? Are you upset about this price drop??? This is like going to a store looking for toilet paper. After finding the toilet paper is the right section but there was a can of bake beans sitting right next to it.
I'll add: I think these folks are idiots if they dropped the price because of the TouchPad. That fire sale said absolutely NOTHING about how tablets should be priced--any product dropped to 80% of its retail price is bound to sell. If you took a Nook Color that's normally $249 and sold it for $49, it would sell like crazy as well. As maybe a better example, take your typical cheap $150 Android tablet and sell it for $30, and it too would sell out.
Rather, hopefully they're taking their queue from the TF, which has sold very well at $399. The market has made it quite clear that only the iPad can command a $499/$599 price point (bizarrely; it truly is a phenomenon what Apple has accomplished), and so coming in at $299 compared to the lowest-priced Honeycomb tablets makes sense.
I can't wait until the TouchPad fiasco is completely dead and buried. It was completely irrelevant to the rest of the tech market.

On the contrary, my feelings are neutral about the price drop. I am however, excited that it is so close to the launch date. I want to be able to play with grid os on my TF.
I would venture to say that the people that bought the HP for $99 are all experimenters and do not plan to use it as an everyday go to tablet. The HP had a unique OS and as such will never have much but the basic built in apps. The average day to day non technical user had no idea that the HP was $99 until after they were gone. Unless you troll the techy boards you would not know. Hell 3 weeks after the fire sale the major office supply stores still had them in their flyers at $499. Sounds like these guys do not have much confidence in their tab.
That tablet looks sick I saw it when it debuted. Anyways android tabs are over priced and no one is reacting to HP, only doing what should have been done from the beginning. The low sales numbers prove it. The problem the Fusion will have is that its not a traditional HC tab even at 300 its going to be difficult to gain traction.
Now if the Xoom would of came in at 350, HC would be going neck n neck with Ipad. A lower price is necessary with ipad 3 around the corner. I bet around Christmas all HC tabs will be reduced by 50-100.

The boneheads at moto really screwed it up. They managed to make it almost twice as thick and almost twice as heavy while wanting to charge almost twice as expensive as the ipad and ipad 2.
I'm making full use of the TF on an everyday basis (work, fun, show off, etc.) and I only paid 380 for both TF+dock new. I wouldn't have had it any other way. To think they could influence someone like me to spend $800 on the xoom is laughable.
This is a really nice looking device. I actually asked if the interface could be ported to the TF since it's built on top of / runs Android. Probably wouldn't use it as my daily tab, but it would make a hell of a nice quickie tab, especially for the price. Maybe leave it near the couch...(or toilet since I like to read )
Got the "Fusion Garage" Grid10 10/13/2011
After update it became very fast and responcive, side loaded "google maps, Samurai 2, and Netflix", so far "Netflix (tried 7 diffrent APK's) is the only APK the does not work well, it kinda works but the video does not load, also I could not get the the "Android Market" to work tries 2 different APK's. I am thinking I will have to spoof the device ID, using the Astro. They still have a Gmail bug, should be fixed soon, just a token issue.
So that's my 411
how about the amazon app store- does that work.
Also, what is your overall impression of the tablet.....good and bad?
Woohoo!

Overall all good, but still for advanced users like us, the amazon app works perfect.
I am hoping that FG goes with the icecream sandwich kernel if possible.
After they update the tablet is working extremely well.
7.25 battery life, FG emailed users to state a even better update will arrive the month.
I have "anti" beta and loving that to.
Good for the price, and should get even better.
