(most likely) Why Gingerbread is taking so long. - Nexus One General

http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/38311/android-2-4-april-release-date
in a move that shows there is some kind of cover-up of the mistake of the lack of Android 2.3 devices on the market (aside from the Nexus S) 2.4 will still be called Gingerbread, as the only new feature it adds will be this ability to support dual-core apps on a single-core device.

Makes complete sense. Dev's are already using the honeycomb SDK to produce apps made for dual core devices. Google cares more about having the maximum number of apps to be available to as many people as possible rather than having a handful of consumers having the absolute latest edition (and I have to agree with them).
How many stock vanilla android devices are there? Just us and the NS (pretty sure no one gets OTA's the day of except us two). Getting an OS out there for everyone is more important then keeping a relatively small group happy with the latest official build. Besides, the N1 is meant for ROM's. Google want's us to play with them, which is why I own the phone. If you've been waiting for gingerbread, just flash a freaking ROM and be happy.
Gingerbread isn't even that great anyway.

AFAIK Gingerbread suffers different problems:
1. security
2. resets
IMHO google devs are working on them before pushing 2.3 on the nexus one too, making it vulnerable and unstable.

Yhea i did read about the resets in NS, i'm using GB on N1 but it never resets on it's own.

The resets may be an issue with the Nexus S hardware, and not with the OS. The Samsung Galaxy S phones have quite a few "issues", just ask any owner of a Captivate. I switched from the Captivate to a Nexus One, it is a much better phone.

I'm on CM7 and getting occasional random resets.

Google announced 27. January that OTA for Nexus S coming in 1-2 weeks, I don´t know why, but maybe we´ll see both Nexus One and Nexus S OTA.

I wish people would stop saying "just flash a GB ROM and be done with it", there's more to it than that. The N1 is sort of a reference design for alot of phones out there. A working N1 GB ROM means solid drivers, solid battery life, solid performance, etc.
I also have an HD2, it's running GB but the battery life (and BT stack in particular) is pretty poor. Devs say they won't be able to improve much until there are more GB ROMs they can pick parts from. First on that list is the N1.
There are more than just us Nexus One users tapping their fingers waiting for Google on this.

The "reset" issue is specific to the NS hardware. Samsung screwed the pooch on that one. There are plenty of people here running GB roms with out issue.
But I do believe the security flaws recently discovered to have a significant impact on GB's delayed release.

My N1 is running a GB ROM with solid battery life, and performance. I don't know about drivers but everything works perfectly and as it should. Almost like I am running an official build of GB. The reboot issue only seemed to occur on CM7.. oddly. And it wasn't frequent enough for me to care.
I thought the HD2 always had pathetic battery life when it came to Android. Mine's did, until I remembered to install SetCPU. It last all day, which is just what I need.

I mean the AOSP was released for gingerbread, so we can get some pretty stable ROM's. No it isn't as good as an official update, but if I wanted to wait for official updates, I would have bought a desire.
Now I'm not sure about this, but I think most ROM's that are cooked are built using the ASOP rather than modified stock ROM's. It isn't worth waiting and complaining for a 100% optimized OTA ROM when there are tons of temporary solutions.

I bought the N1 because it was great hardware and, most importantly, because it was carrier free. The ability to root and flash the phone is nice in case I ever feel the need to admin yet another Linux machine, but that was certainly not everyones reason for getting the phone.

I simply meant that we receive updates as soon as they are available, and are the first ones to get it. Desire has to wait for HTC to update sense and drivers and all that stuff until they release an OTA.

Touche, although there aren't many people on these forums with the same intentions. I was simply speaking to the masses.

I don't know why release is taking so long...

My N1 resets randomly on CM7.... but luckily I don't have the wonks!
Google will release it when its ready!

Galaxy S likely to Get Froyo from this week !!!

http://www.samfirmware.com/apps/blog/show/5196562-samsung-starts-froyo-updates-
Check out this thread for FROYO by SamFirmWare
Code:
Samsung Starts with Froyo updates next week.
They start with Europe.
After Europe the will go to Asia and Africa.
Every Galaxy S user could update his device with Samsung Kies.
Or with our way. (ODIN)
The firmwares will be XWJPA or XXJPO. (For Europe)
Both firmwares leaked on our website already.
So if you want you could download them and update your mobile!
Good Luck!
Remember after this Release Samsung keep supporting your device!
So please check weekly Samsung Kies or our website!
Why we think this are the KIES releases?
When you checked all newsmessages you find out that Samsung removed JPM from his servers.
A couple of days ago SamsungMobileUK place on his facebook and twitter that they start in begin November till the end of November for all operators.
When we check now the new Firmware versions it could be the new KIES releases. For Europe and Scandinavian.
Every Galaxy S phone will have Android 2.2 before 2011!
We have currently no information for the Samsung I5800 and I5500.
But JPA has many bugs... This is the famous new and fast FW?
I wonder how many will sell their devices if this is true?

This has been said over a billion times, no software will be w/o bugs. Even HTC devices are pretty buggy.. Probably the one with the least bugs is the Nexus 1.

I know I won't.
I love the phone and I am on 2.1.
I can't see what's the big deal with froyo. None of the features it brings are groundbreaking (maybe with the exception of flash 10).
I don't think I would upgrade anyway...

That's nice, but I don't think any of these updates are "must have" for me. The changes on the gmail app are not essential for me. I don't use youtube that much and when I use it I find it good enough and the skype implementation is not bringing video calls, so I don't want it.
If and when something amazing comes to 2.2 that I definitely must have, I may upgrade. Until then I would rather see bug fixes than new features as the phone already does a lot!
running jp6 with a modded kernel (341 megs by hardcore!), and its extremely quick and stable! i totally love my sgs the way it is now and have very few things to whine about
i just want samsung to commit on gingerbread for our devices
So, that "fast" FW samfirmware was talking about is going to be just a firmware with less lags than in pulled scandinavian official Froyo? That sucks, because my phone feels laggy (black screens) even on JM9 with Voodoo. And lagfix is the ONLY thing that i need from new FWs.
At least we will have official Froyo.... be happy!

I'm sorry but it's not cool. Samsung seems to have this strange policy to release high-end devices and not provide proper support for them.
Right now I'm using JPK with OCLF and Launcher Pro Plus and I'm happy with my phone. But both OCLF and Launcher Pro are third party apps.
There are tons of lagfix solutions and custom ROMs that are better than the stock ones.
Customizing your device must be a choice and not a necessity so you can get decent performance on a top-notch hardware.
And I keep getting the feeling that they leak ROMs intentionally and use XDA users as guinea pigs. And are using devs to fix the issues...
Sorry that my first post ever in this forum is so negative but I'm getting really mad and impatient with Samsung...

Yeah, the lagfixes are great, except when they corrupt your IMEI and cause other issues. You do get decent performance without them. The lag patches haven't been flawless either... And yes, despite the crap samsung gets, I used an iPhone 4 the other day, and it was taking MUCH longer to respond to minor things (despite the fact iphones use compiled code, so they should be even more responsive).
In regards to samfirmware, forget about the rumor sites, most of them have been consistently wrong, and haven't been using credible sources.
@Sociopathic: I have a friend with HTC Desire and Froyo for 4 months I guess and he's not happy... he feels that the Froyo update for his phone is not properly made.
My guess is Samsung was not prepared for Andorid's rise. Not even Google. So, we have to be pacient. Good things will come with Android. Samsung is moving slow because is a huge company with a lot of people to decide what and when goes online, each one pushing his interests. Someone wants Froyo so contain this, other that and so on...
Tolisan decided to sell his Galaxy S. He cut the **** and moved on.
Enjoy your Galaxy S or buy something else. I'm happy with mine! Best phone I ever had!
*yawn*
i'm more excited with the post about samsung's intention to make better pc software then kies
Why you complain everytime about bugs?
I use my phone often, and most of all "bugs" are PEBTAC.
(Problem exists between Touchscreen and chair).
But I'm wondering about the not optimized JIT.
Is it so difficult for Samsung to unleash the performance of the 1337 CPU?
And it's strange that they canceled JPM and made just minor changes.
That's what disappointed me

JPM was possibly only a release candidate in the first place. And we don't know exactly what was fixed anyway. There may have been some less-common major bugs fixed.
In regards to optimising JIT, our JIT might be optimised, but might simply not be optimised for the benchmarks. Remember, most CPU benchmarks only test a small number of instructions.

I saw today that the droid x is getting a second update to 2.2.1 and the phones came out on the same day. Samsung may be slow with updates but I think t mobile makes it much worse. I expect an update this month but tell me why every other phone gets update love and we dont.

Popularity/sales. There's articles on it. Look at the popularity of the Evo and compare it to the updates they get all the time. Makes sense. My question is...why are you same idiots on a forum for development *****ing about stock ota updates. If you don't mod your phone, what are you wasting your time here for? Just flash a froyo ROM and shutup. If you've been reading anything, you'd know that the official froyo will most likely not offer anything more than the stuff the devs have out right now, the leaked builds are pretty much what we'll be seeing from T-Mobile.
Some people want official/supported ROMs for their contract phones.
If you don't like it you can stop responding and just STFU.
Those third-party ROMs all have issues and they are notorious for having worse battery life and stability than stock ROMs.
People like me don't wanna touch **** like that.

I love the custom ROMS, and the biggest no-go for me is the loss of Thinkfree Office that comes free with the stock ROM, which I use frequently for work. Of course, there is a lot of crapware that I didn't miss, but when I realized that I lost that program and would have to pay to get it on a custom ROM, that was a dealbreaker. Also, I get tired of having to reconfigure my apps, address book, and contact linking every time I flashed my phone.
Time to go work on your reading comprehension.

Yeah so far the best battery life are the Official leaked roms, any third party rom are just less stable and waste more battery.
After trying all the custom roms for the vibrant i just had to go back to the official, sadly that wasn't the case for N1.

You're very uniformed, the third party roms for vibrant are way more stable and bug free compared to the samsung garbage. Their programmers are terrible.
I've noticed that a lot of the bugs that come with custom roms are caused by flashing multiple roms one after another without a trip to Odin. I believe that ghosts of old roms are the reason there are huge inconsistencies in the bugs people report. I rarely have issues with TW and Eugene builds now that I revert to JFD with a repartition between flashes. Most of the issues that I do run into are caused by flaws in the leak itself (blurry mms, wifi calling app). Titanium restoring system settings, especially when moving between roms based off of different leaks, is another culprit. The main reason for the battery drains is the I9000 kernel. Once source gets dropped, kernels will be built off proper source and battery life should get better and there should be less issues. Just my 0.02. To each his own, but I still prefer the custom roms and I'm waiting for the actual update so Samsung finally has to release their source.

First of all it "uninformed" not "uniformed" and these third party roms ARE NOT bug free. I have yet to find a rom where the MMS was bug free which is unbelievable to me. These developers can work magic on porting over all types of roms to these phone that technically shouldn't work on them but they can't make MMS work flawlessly. MMS is an important feature I need to work perfectly and that's one feature that has never worked (flawlessly) on any rom or any phone I have ever had. (My G1, Nexus, Vibrant, or MT4G). So now I always root my phones but keep them stock and just theme them to my liking.

Notwithstanding who you are quoting, you are wrong. I don't put anything worse than the official release on my phone and that's usually what I get when I flash something from the Development section. It's usually extremely tacky too

I have to disagree with you. Ive ran every rom from the android development and they all have bugs. Usually they start off fine but a couple days later bugs start to pop out. Most roms would be final if there were bugfree, besides app updates/tweaks.
All roms where installed after running Odin/stock
Problems I had with custom roms:
Minimum 3 freezes a day.
usually freeze during music playback
External sd card was hit or miss
Freezes during usb mount
Inconsistent battery life
custom kernels caused problems
Tons of lag on every rom/Needed lagfixes
Panic Mode(Never seen this until Customs Roms)
Odin every other day
Android Market problems
Data problems(needed to activate airplane mode on/off)
etc... Hate to admit it but my HD2 was more bugfree.
Its not the devs fault, they dont have much to work with but they are certainly not bugfree. My jk6 rom is running perfectly without the need for lagfixes or custom kernels. Only mod ive added was an accurate battery mod. I understand everyones phone is apparently different but I do suggest trying the newest one.
The only rom I could use day-to-day is TW roms.
You mean the extremely slow and bloated official releases. If you haven't noticed, a lot of the improvements made to manufacturer releases are based off custom roms here. Even Google kanged some of the stuff CM has been doing in Gingerbread?. The bugs that were squashed between Window Mobile 6.0 and 6.5 were squashed on XDA. If you like slow, stale and possibly less buggy, stick with the official releases. Many of us prefer bleeding edge enhancements

It comes to mind that Samsung will not even consider updating the Vibrant until the Nexus S has been out for at least two weeks to a month. I believe they will just wait and try to entice more people to purchase the Nexus s (the longer the wait for 2.2 the more appealing Gingerbread is on the Nexus S.) I am not impressed with the specs on the Nexus S ( no sd card for starters). The Nexus S is due out on Dec. 16, 2010 so I am not looking for an official update to 2.2 till early next year, if then.

Why Complain about no Offical 2.2?

Here is how I see it. There are still a ton of people complaining about the fact that Samsung and Tmoble have not released an offical Froyo for the Vibrant. Honistly why are people still waiting? There are a TON of 2.2 options on the dev page, they are all good at this point and they are being produced with leak software which is being released about once a week at this point. Macnut 14 for example is sooooo good that even if tmoble did release a offical Froyo I wouldn't even bother to download it. I would just wait for someone release a custom rom that used the most recent code.
With that in mind, we are constantly geting the most recent code with all the leaked versions that keep comming. Affter playing with the stock versions of these leaks, im GLAD that they are not releasing these as OTA updates yet. This would stop them from improving the code as rapidly as they are. As it is, every time a new firmware is leaked, it takes our devs here at XDA to make it something truly wonderful.
Ultimately, no one who post on this forum should complain for one simple reason. If you are posting here then you have obviouly found the forum. If you found the forum, then you are one click away from the Dev forum where you can get so much Froyo that you will have brain freaze for a year!!! For those of you afraid to try flashing your software read this.
1. Is easyer than you think
2. You wont hard brick your phone,
3. If you read a follow the directions step by step, you will be fine
4. Your not going to void your warrenty if the first thing you learn to do is flash back to JI6 (stock)
5. You will fix the large majority of the problems you may be experencing on your phone now with 2.2
The new Froyo roms are SAFE to flash. If something goes wrong there are step by step directions here to recover back to stock. If you are still nervous about flashing, just stay away from the lag fixes and you will be fine. Lag fixes are for more experenced users and are not needed so your not missing out that much as any 2.2 rom is going to be much faster than 2.1 JI6.
Guys, the latest that samsung has offer is right here on this site!!! Take advantage of it and learn the few simple things it takes to become a power user. Your phone is good hardware, give it the software it craves and the moble experence you want. Im shure samsung is working as fast as they can especaly with the new Nexus just coming out, but when this update goes live, its going to be for everyone, including the people that have never heard of XDA or even cared about Froyo to begin with. It has to be flawless firmware for the masses. The longer they take the better its going to be, and if you want it now, you can have what they they've got so far just by pulling it from this very website
Forget class action, forget refunds and *****ing. The only word you need to learn is ODIN. After that, your in control thanks to the great devs here at XDA. Oh, and by the way, you may want to learn how to use ODIN right now. Think about it, Froyo is cool, but Gingerbread is on the way guys, and those of us who are willing to take the time to read will have 2.3 long before those of you who complain and do nothing to educate yourselfs will have Froyo.
From now on, whenever I see a "lets sue Tmo for no Froyo" thread, im going to post one simple phase:
"Complain less, ODIN more!!!!"
+1

some could argue it will run better than custom 2.2? but whos complaining
hack away!
I've gone back to stock as custom roms will always have a bug or two, and more so when they are based off of a leaked rom(and there have been more then one for 2.2). I'm waiting till an official update is released before I try custom roms again.
Odin and Rom Manager are great, and I have enjoyed geeking away my time with roms on XDA. However:
1. Not everyone has time to waste exploring a bunch of roms to see which are stable.
2. Samsung probably appreciates XDA because it takes the pressure off of them:. The most savvy consumers are placated by the ability to get Froyo on their own.
Imagine Toyota never releasing a recall on their automobiles after the safety scandals, and that instead people on YouTube taught people how to fix the cars themselves in the garage. Sure, mechanically inclined folks would jump at the opportunity, and perhaps say, don't be mad at Toyota, fix it yourselves! Toyota would probably like the "DIY" trend among their customers.
Sure, we should take action and get Froyo ourselves, but that should not lessen our anger at Samsung/T-Mobile.
One very good reason to complain about the lack of an official 2.2 release is that Samsung won't release source until that's out. If we had source, we would have had CM6 or a true AOSP build by now.

And now we have the source for 2.3 AND the Nexus S kernel source. I'd put my money on seeing that kernel working on the vibrant in short order and full AOSP gingerbread roms not long after.

GPS is still borked on all roms. Is it usable? Somewhat. But I wouldn't trust it if my life depended on it. Samsung fixed the initial lock issue. It locks fine with 10-12 sat locked with maybe 5m error. The problem is when you use it for navigation. The GPS will lose the lock repeatedly and randomly jump. This after Odin to stock JFD and then Odin to newest JL4. I used Samsung GPSrestore app to reset the GPS settings. I tried about every leaked and custom roms since the release of this phone. GPS is still crappy. GPS Status app showing sat lock doesn't mean it's fixed.

*Every* custom 2.2 rom has "issues" that will be solved once the official 2.2 is released.
First, Thank god this is not a safety issue like the Toyota stuff, lol.
As far as the source being released, true, but we must concider the fact, as im sure they have, that we are geting the gingerbread source. If that ports, then its going to more than make up for CM6 or AOSP 2.2 IMHO....
For those of you who posted that your going to stick with the stock roms, there is not a thing wrong with that. Great thing is your not the type that complains. You know what it takes to debug this stuff and have tried the custom roms. For me, Macnut final was less buggy that JI6. Im a happy camper. You tried them and made an informed, educated decission and didn't just get on a soap box with a megaphone and gripe.
This is what im talking about, choices. We are lucky enough to have choices here and options when it comes to our software. For all the complaining we do, many other phone owners dont have those options.
As for "evey bug that is in the Roms will be fixed in 2.2 offical" I hope your right, but it takes time to debug and people who say "I WANT IT NOW!!!!< YOU PROMISED!!! WAAAAAA". They need to realize if it was put out NOW it would have the exact same bugs as the roms. As you might note, the bugs in the roms are geting fewer and fewer. Once they are all gone, the BAM!!! Offical release. But in the mean time, we shoud be gratefull for what we have, and what we have comming, namely Gingerbread..
I dont want to get into the GPS issue in this thread. Software is never going to be the compleate fix, i've already stated this elsewhere. I still beleave its mostly due to a bad connection to the antenna. When I fixed that on mine, it solved 95 percent if my gps issues, and updated modems fixed the rest. The GPS may be one place a Vibrant owner truely has some ground to complain, but Im strictly talking about people who complain about the 2.2 update here.

I've gone back to stock as custom roms will always have a bug or two, and more so when they are based off of a leaked rom(and there have been more then one for 2.2). I'm waiting till an official update is released before I try custom roms again.

+1 to be completely honest, i'd be content getting the froyo source from Sammy and getting the JIT improvements ported over. GB doesn't excite me as much as froyo did when it was new. I just like the idea of AOSP and JIT improvements.

yeah, my favorite is people saying samsung software devs suck cause we don't have froyo and tw sucks and blah blah blah blah, then complain they don't have an 'official' 2.2 when that 'official' 2.2 would have been released by those same samsung devs that suck and some/most of the 'unofficial' 2.2 roms we have are created by good/competent devs. but they aren't 'official'. lol.
If you are still having GPS problems after trying all the fixes and ROMs than ytou may have a hardware issue requiring a replacement.
ive flashed many roms and at first I thought it was the best thing ever till I started to see bugs and problems with mms or mounting issues and then came the fixes and I was like ok its fixed but theres some problems that didnt get fixed like the mic input volume is low when recording a video on a leaked 2.2 rom i confirmed it by going back to JI6, then I noticed my haptic feedback was messed up and i would get weak glitchy vibrations overall. GPS was never an issue for me and the roms with "improved/fixed gps" made it worse or didnt change at all. So as of now im done flashing and waiting for the OTA update.

Let's see. My Vibrant has the same problem. My wife's Vibrant has the same problem. Two of my friends have Vibrants and they have the same problem. One did a replacement exchange and that has the same problem. 5 out of 5 different Vibrants have the same problem. You really think exchanging is going to solve this issue? I refuse to believe any Vibrant owner has a perfect working gps. It might be borderline usable but it's still ****ty GPS compared to other phones.
Froyo I can hack. 100% working GPS is another matter.

As I've said, gps works perfectly in mine and I'm able to use it for navigation. I would say 1) if they are stock, are they running the update? 2) check serial numbers, if they are close enough, could have been part of a bad batch. I'm not trying to make excuses, but just suggestions. There are those who would say just flash a custom rom, but I know that isn't for everyone. I say try to exhaust every option you have with Tmo, but if thing still dont work out, i would recommend the EECB(Electronic Executive Carpet Bomb). I've had results in getting corporations to help me out with this(Tmo and Chase). Basically you send a mass email to every executive you can get a hold of. But I would only use this as a last resort as you can use your previous attempts with the regular customer service as evidence in any argument you make in the email, just make sure its a polite one. Ones full of flame and hate tend to not work.

CM7 and The future of the Vibrant

While the T959 is a well built phone with great specs, I felt like it was incomplete until 2.2 ROMs came out in November. Then, when 2.3 and the Nexus S were announced, that feeling returned.. now with Cyanogenmod7 working so well, I am in love with my Vibrant once again.
Even without any further version updates (2.4, 3.0 if possible) the phone has been improved dramatically by the work of Team Whiskey, Supercurio, Eugene, and the Cyanogenmod Team.
What keeps the Vibrant apart from all the HTC and Motorola phones when it comes to Cyanogenmod - is it a driver issue? Is it because of the Hummingbird processor?
Now that CM7 is finally working well on the Vibrant, does this mean that future Cyanogenmod versions will work on the Vibrant? Have they finally "cracked the shell" so to speak?
I am curious also as to what makes CyanogenMod different to work on for our phones vs the other ones you named.
CM is actually worse for Motorola devices as they have a locked bootloader...
On the other hand, HTC is very good about releasing source for their devices when compared to Samsung, who rarely releases source code if at all (driver source). Plus, CM started on HTCs, and with every device using similar Qualcomm hardware, i can imagine it is easier to port to newer Qualcomm-equipped HTC devices. That said, it appears that HTC is beginning to implement software to prevent rooting on newer phones like the G2, so we may see more people moving towards the more open Samsung devices.
Finally, this is explained to me. Thanks!
Why do drivers need to be recompiled for each version of Android? Do they need to be recompiled for similar releases such as 2.0 and 2.1 or 2.3 and 2.4?
I'm not exactly an expert when it comes to the Linux architecture, so take the following with a grain of salt.
Anyways, I believe it has to do with the kernel, which should contain the device drivers. Now, kernels must indeed be recompiled for every android system update; this is why a 2.1 or 2.2 kernel will not work with the newer 2.3.x roms. The problem for us is that once Samsung stops releasing kernels/roms for the SGS series, devs will no longer have a base to build off of. Hopefully devs can make use of updates/drivers from the Nexus S to keep the SGS series up to date with CM.

I agree!
The main difference between CM/MIUI and the rest of the roms you see here on XDA is that CM/MIUI are built directly off of a Vanilla Froyo/Gingerbread. No extra flavorings or seasonings such as TouchWiz, HTC Sense, MotoBlur, Droid UI, etc. The use of, or misuse of, causes phones to run slower and do more work (unnecessarily) while it computes extra calculations of the UI. [EDIT]When developers BASE a rom off of a leak or pre-existing firmware it does not make it Vanilla just by removing TWiz or Sense or the rest of bloatware. Vanilla is generally the most simple a firmware can be, with no added extra-pazzaz[/EDIT]
There hasn't been a solid update to MIUI for our phone in a month, but CM has nightly builds and HOPEFULLY it has "cracked the shell," so to speak. Even if Samsung STOPS upgrading our firmware (which has already happened IMO), CyanogenMod makes their own code and develops independently without the use of previous stockpiles of code...which is why it's difficult at first to come up with their own driver source (because Samsung refuses to release ALL the sources needed). Hopefully our Vibrant is covered for the next 2.4 or 3.0 (3.1) update.
Samsung needs to continue to make money. They wouldn't if they let each phone update to the newest andros os. Not just samsung, any hardware company.

I disagree with this because, If Samsung released the code and people updated their phones as they liked and put different operating systems, roms as they liked. customer satisfaction would skyrocket. People would be more likely to buy new phones only from Samsung because they wanted the newest available hardware, read this as faster more flexible with more options.
but alas Samsung as with most of the manufacturers suffer from penny wise and dollar stupid syndrome and they end up being fairly low on the customer satisfaction scale another words they suck

As a hardware company customer satisfaction is one thing and making them buy more of their products is another. If your 4,5-years old phone can still upgrade to the newest OS why would you buy a new one? So there is a balance for them to keep, their want to make their customer happy with their product but not too happy so their stay with old product forever.
That's very much why samsung was hesitated about 2.3 upgrade for the galaxy line.
The future of the device has more to do with whether or not the developers stick with the device. With the SGS being an international phone there is a better chance of this happening, and samsung has started getting better with releasing their source. As mentioned earlier HTC is making devices harder to root, for example the HTC desire CDMA with 2.2 is impossible to root and the G2 was an annoyance.
Also samsung has released multiple phones that are very close to the Vibrant such as the Nexus S and the Vibrant 4g. The Nexus S will be updated for awhile and source will be released for it, so its something though not much. The Vibrant 4g will also hopefully be updated and that will hopefully be an easy port. Also 2.4 is very similar to 2.3 so that will hopefully be an easy update for the developers.
Basically as long as we have the awesome devs that we have and we dont flame everyone that the devs get tired of working with the phone then we will have a device that will be updated and beautiful.

Amen. Well stated.

Vibrant forum dying?

Before I get to my point I want to thank all the devs for there hard work that they do in their spare time. They do it for free and hope that some of us donate to make it a little more worth their while.
Maybe it's just me or does it seem like the development thread is slowing down. I've noticed lately that most of the stuff coming in now is ports from other phones and updates for past builds. Theres not alot of new stuff rolling out. EDT seems to stay busy, but what happend to TW? I would have put money on having a stable 2.3 rom out by now to use as a daily driver. We also lost Eugene and leaked samsung builds seem to not be coming out as often.
Is our phone entering the twilight years? Are the dev's losing interest and working on other phones. I've played around with some of the new phones like the atrix and thunderbolt and i'm sure they could be a lil more interesting to build for.
I hope i'm wrong and 5 min. after I post this a new 2.3 rom comes out. It was fun when you flashed a new trigger rom and 1 day later the new bionix came out. This is a really nice phone and you have to really try hard to brick it. It's almost like Samsung designed it to be modded. Hopefully the devs can get inspired again or some new blood comes in to give us something new.
I think we need to be patient. One day there will be a leak for gb and things will fire up again.

In the mean time flash a miui beta or try out the EDT roms you wont be disappointed.
Lets not forget Simply Galaxy v3 a 2.3.3 rom. Yes still developing but stable.

Yes, but point being is that we're pretty much at the mercy of Samsung & T-Mobile to release a 2.3.
We will not have a kernel source to play with until it releases for I9K, and even then we'll have issues for a while. And we won't have one with rockin' battery life until we get a leak or source.
But yeah, there really isn't much developing coming from anyone except the guys working on kernels & people like Whitehawk, sonique, and of course Untermench who actaully modify the code. Because there's not much else to do.
Things are winding down. There are only a handful of people around who have the knowledge and inclination to roll their own ROMs.
As newer devices with more capabilities are introduced (the dual core LG G2X will be in T-mobile stores April 20th), then the older ones lose favor.
That is how it is with Android. Your 8 month old phone becomes old. After 15 months its an antique!

I actually have tried to develop a theme to post here but there is so much involved with all the editing and i simply don't have the time. I really wish I did. Trust me I have a great respect for what the dev's do once I started playing around with just a theme. I can only imagine what a rom would take. Plus I can honestly say i'm not skilled enough to put out a quality rom any time soon, if ever. I'm really not complaining about effort or quantity from the devs, i've just noticed lately there seems to be a dull in the dev section. I was just wondering why.
Eugene is back. He said on twitter that he bought a Vibrant. You can see evidence, his newest Ginger Clone version has already had 4 updates.
Sure a lot of the development is for 2.2 and 2.2.1 roms, but I'd say we're easily WAY more active than we used to be. We've now got plenty of choices of roms, kernels, and themes. We've also got new people joining the Vibe development scene. There's an experimental Gingerbread Sense that's just started testing. We are now officially supported by the MIUI team. I see new things happening every day. Development doesn't always happen overnight, but I believe we've still got lots of good things look forward to.
Slowing down? I still remember when there was only one rom in the dev section. Now there's a new one each week, and at least one update every day.

Keep in mind the psychology at work here. Most of the people who get all angsty about this are rom comsumers, and not active dev's, themers, or kangers.
It appears that what we are experiencing now is a lot of cross development, taking existing roms from the international i9000 and porting them to our universe thanks to the availability of kernel source for 2.2. So the nature of activity has changed, but the scope has actually expanded.
This phone (thanks to dev work here @ XDA) stopped sucking ass A VERY LONG TIME AGO. Gains to be had at this point are largely cosmetic, so there is the appearance that improvements are not coming at the rate they used to. The fact of the matter is that quantitative improvements are largely unnecessary at this point.
As a "consumer" myself (I gave up on linux development a long time ago, owing to my own inherent laziness) I find the current state of affairs quite amazing. Your mileage may vary. YMMV.
What's funny is that people much prefer a broken ROM that gets fixed rather than a fully working ROM out of the box ^_^

That's the point for me. I stopped updating at KA6. Sure KA7 came out not long after, but why? I had been updating daily/weekly until then, always fighting some bug or flaw. With KA6, I flashed the ODIN version, removed bloatware myself, added the round battery icon, power off menu, and that was *it*. More recently I've updated the Kernel to Overstock 2.x and voodoo FS, but I'm not even sure why I need voodoo. Can't tell a difference in the real speed of the phone.
I didn't take the phone apart to add FFC like so many did (and who also never use it in most cases), so I don't need improved support for that... and themes, well... I guess there is that, not much going on in KA6 themes -- but that doesn't affect the use of the phone at all.
KA6 for me has been fast, stable, and by far the best on battery life of any I've touched yet. There are few if any programs out there that require 2.3 or higher, and until that is the case, why change?
The atmosphere is totally different than it was last fall, when the rest of the world was going 2.2 and Vibrant was stuck on 2.1. At that time, there were an increasing number of programs that simply would not work on Eclair - plus Froyo had been promised as an update. Now we have everything Samsung promised, and really if you're running a lightly modded ROM, it *is* bug-free.
So... until I am forced to consider 2.3, I'm sticking with KA6.. It is nice after years of constantly flashing upgrades on the HTC Vogue (wm6), then the G1, then flashing the MT3G constantly, then constantly flashing the Vibrant, to actually pick up my phone and have it work the same way it did yesterday.
