Am I the only one who... - Atrix 4G General

Thinks the Atrix is a stupid idea...or at minimum the laptop style dock is a stupid idea? Why in the hell would I buy a completely dead miniature laptop for $499 when I could buy a damn 15.6" fully functional laptop for $100 less?? I shouldn't say the phone is stupid or necessarily the dock either, but the pricing makes absolutely 0 sense to me.
What are your thoughts?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

The price for phone the normal.
I will buy it.
And the Dock will be then cheaper

For $500, yes its stupid. It was originally thought to be $150, which would have been a great deal

For 500$ with "Sim Free" it is normal

I was on board totally till I heard this.the phone is amazing either way and ill still get one. But 300$ for a bearbone? Or $500? Like tgr OP said. You can get a netbook ipad many other options available
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App

The dock just turns it into a convenient netbook. Later this year Google's Chrome OS netbooks will come out in retail and likely be far cheaper than $500 for just a shell. Better still, my Cr-48 has a Verizon 3G modem built into it without a contact. Likely cheaper to have your normal cell phone and a Chrome OS netbook than to use the Atrix with dock with tethering.
Shame too, I really do like the Atrix and its flexibility. I just do not like the idea of losing my unlimited plan and being forced to add tethering charges.

I agree for $499 it's a dumb idea. I personally wouldn't ever use the laptop dock so I've steered clear from the Atrix altogether. I figured Motorola would try to lock the phone down somehow like they did with the Droid X.

What the **** are you talking about? Sideloading will be enabled with every Android phone after the Inspire HD.
And in regards to the pricing plans, AT&T isn't the only carrier with tiered data. They are (if I am recalling correctly) the only one without unlimited data, but WiFi is so abundant nowadays, it doesn't really matter (for the majority of people).

That says the Inspire HD might allow sideloading, it might be enabled on this pre-release version and maybe stopped with the official (I believe they mention that in the video too).
But nowhere in there does it say that all phones after the inspire will allow sideloading.
EDIT: I take that back, I see where he mentions that in the post. Sorry.

The pricing is dumb; way too much for the dock.

The last batch of NexusOne @ Google

http://googlenexusoneboard.blogspot.com/2010/07/update-nexus-one-changes-in.html
I hope this means NexusTwo is in the works
It really does make me sad. At least we have some indication that the nexus one will continue to be supported as the official developer phone.
Not "some", but the most official indication possible, quoting:
"To ensure our developers have access to a phone with the latest Android OS, Google will be offering the Nexus One through a partner for sale to registered developers. Visit the Android Market Publisher site and log into your developer account to purchase a Nexus One."
A little sad at face value... But looking deeper, what it means to me is that if you want an N1 after they sell out, you have to pay a $25 premium (to get a developer profile). Not that big of a deal in my opinion. That said, given that the Galaxy S has been rooted, I'm sure it won't be missed too much. I won't be getting rid of my N1 any time soon though!
Now to sit back and wait for the next Anti-Jesusphone.
*Disclaimer: I'm not saying the N1 is the antichrist. I'm just making fun of the fact that people refer to iphones as 'Jesusphones'. This is just for the people with no sense of humor*
Our phones are soon to be rare collectors items
What about the accessories? The desk dock, car dock, and battery. They charge fair prices, expecially for the battery. Other vendors selling the same batt would charge double I bet.

i'm wondering if i should pick up accessories for this phone sometime soon. i already have the desktop dock, and probably won't need the car dock as i have a universal mount solution. although i'm pretty satisfied w/ my current battery, i could see myself requiring a new battery in the future. thoughts? are there other means of acquiring an official/oem battery?
Time to wait for the next developer phone with stock android I guess, never gonna buy a phone with Sense/Motoblur/Touchwiz or whatever.
Hopefully they will create a new developer phone in time for Gingerbread or the next version.

Don't buy a battery ahead of time, it will be useless by the time you want to use it.
The Nexus battery is the same as the desire battery which is probalby the same as a few other HTC devices, track it down by P/N on htc's site and you should be alright.
Wait, woah...
Notice how there's no mention of selling it via T-Mobile / AT&T retail stores in the US?
I thought that was a lock. Looks like that flopped.
Google denied again? Ouch...
In any case, all this means we can sell our phones for an even greater profit once we want to upgrade...
The good news is our Nexus will soon be considered a Classic!

Not really, all one has to do is pay $25 bucks and get it as a "developer" for probably the same price we pay now.
I hope it becomes a classic, it will hopefully be worth a good amount when the new Gen of android phones get released.
I wonder what the next default testing phone will be for Google. I'm sure it'll be the nexus for at least the remainder of the year though. I hope.

The phone interface that looked like Windows Mobile 7? Uh.. no..

Through all this fog, let's find a glimmer of hope.

Okay, we DEFINITELY know that ATT (as expected), buzzkilled the SH*T out of the accessories for the Atrix. But, let's see possibilites of the future.
First off, I believe the phone can still be $149 if bought from CostCo/Bestbuy with the 2 year contract (hence, the proof of pictures and Amazon), and $199 through ATT. The accessory docks though... yeah, blew us out of the water.
Although, it's a tad bit early to say the least, to give up on these accessories (as for most people, the REAL deal killer is ATT's idiotic mindset that it is considered tethering your phone to an object that works only as good as my flashlight (laptop dock)). We have lots of brilliant minds waiting to get their hands on the dock (hopefully, if the pricing still wasn't enough to kill it), and there may be possible solutions for not having to get the tethering add-on price to it.
We all know many of us here already tether with our grandfather unlimited smartphone plan, what's the loss in trying it out with webtop.
Prerequisities:
We would have to find ways to buy the laptop dock not through ATT so they don't force change our precious current plans
Ideal:
We can use the laptop dock (regardless of price paid for the accessory) and we wouldn't have to be paying for the tethering add-on.
Possible Problems:
ATT and Motorola have figured out a way to "lock" laptop dock usage without the tethering plan. I've not the slightest clue as to how they will do it, but it's very possible.
Possible Solution:
Some devs find a way to bypass those requirements and we'd be able to use the dock scott-free. After that, we can treat it as how we treat how we tether our laptops.
So, we can look up to this, buy the Atrix for 149 or 199 JUST for now, and hope that in a couple of months there will be a solution to this madness. Hell, ATT may put it on sale because of low sell rate, or just competitive pricing, and by then some devs have figured out some ROMs that let us use the webtop app.
NOT ALL IS LOST YET GUYS..... WE DON'T NEED ATT!
Mark my words, bootloader will be locked far worse than on DroidX. They will encrypt the **** out of it.
This is the last straw, I'm spending my last days with AT&T and switching to VZW with MUCH better network, LTE, Xoom and Bionic.

If not can some developers hack it so all the 1gb is used for android?

yep I agree, IF the dock is not around $150 it's too much BUT I would forget about it and just look at the phone by itself. If alone the phone is not enough then I say move on, meaning, wait for a better phone to hit in a month or so. To me the phone alone seems like a great phone...as long as it itself is not too expensive... Time will tell I guess for all of us.
It is easier to be positive in my neck of the woods though cause I don't think Bell will block sideloading and tethering etc..

They didn't block sideloading for Samsung's Galaxy S. Can't see why they'd do it for the Atrix. And waiting for a better phone in Canada may take way more than a month The only other "big phone" announced is Telus' Desire HD! That's so 2010...
The reason the laptop dock will require tethering is because it uses a full desktop Firefox browser, hence you will be loading full desktop websites. If you were to use your standard dataplan, loading full desktop websites will immediately eat into your data usage.

Yep, that's ATT counterproducing itself. It's stupidity at it's finest.
I can picture how ATT thought about the pricing:
"Oh hey, the internet is mostly excited about the laptop dock and we are getting such a huge fanbase on our Atrix... Let's jack up the price of the laptop dock and add the so-called tethering on it... that'll DEFINITELY kill their joy."

I agree. I think the reasoning for the tethering requirement is quite simple: economics.
Look at it this way: If Motorola prices the dock at $500, and AT&T subsidizes the price down to $300 (if bought as a package), where will the $200 come from? Obviously it isn't in their interest to give away something for nothing, and AT&T obviously subsidizes devices in exchange for a contract. So I'm sure AT&T is figuring that the $200 discount should be made up for by paying for tethering.
The fact that Moto thinks the dock is worth $500 is still idiotic, however. The real dealbreaker of the tethering plan is the loss of unlimited data that's required for those of us that have it.
I would bet that the laptop dock drops in price pretty rapidly, especially since AT&T/Motorola are going to sell about four of them at that price.

Upgrading on another phone
I have 4 phones on my plan but only 3 of them have the data (last is for my daughter's emergency phone).
Of the 3 on the data plan, mine still has the medianet plan on my captivate which the AT&T rep was kind enough to keep for me when he upgraded my phone from an older phone to the captivate.
But phone #4 without the data plan is up for upgrade and I'm wondering if I order it online, do I have to pick a data plan for it? Or will it try to put a dataplan on it if I use it with her sim card but not mine?
I'm thinking if I unlock the phone and just put my sim chip in it, I can keep my unlimited, but not sure if the data plan automatically gets put on phone #4 if I upgrade on that.
Anyone know?
Hey guys
Is it the plan version or the RRP? coz I got mine for $550 from other source=(

Currently trying out the LTE version from Verizon. Not all that bad.
Price is steep - but this is replacing my old Mifi device, so when I combine that with the price of the device and the contract it's all the same to me.
So far so good - and happy with it's performance as hot spot for my laptop.

Yea I'm kind of considering picking up the lte version. I'm already paying for a tablet plan so I could just move it to that line. However, the lack of developer support for the verizon version is holding me back. Not to mention it will probably be months before it sees ICS which will really help with HCs performance...
Would love to see some or A dev jump on for this device. That happens and I'll spring the 700 for that beautiful samoled goodness.

Why is it funny? it is always cheaper through a retailer then directly. You can get it for 1 penny on amazon. The only downside ordering it through a 3rd party is if you cancel after 30 days but before 180 days you pay 200$+ extra to cancel.

a no go for the following reason:
1) motorolla device with no confirmed unlocked bootloader
2) non-removable battery is only 1785 mAh
3) only 1GB RAM

#1 Not true, it has been confirmed that the Photon Q 4GLTE will be Motorola's first unlockable bootloader.
http://www.motorola.com/blog/2012/07/26/unlock-the-bootloader-on-motorola-photon-q-4g-lte/
That said, I still won't buy it, most likely.
Sprint posted a deal on the Motorola Photon Q. If you pre-order and add a line you get a $100 amex gift card so may be worth it if your on a family plan.
2 people told me today they are waiting for the iPhone 5...

Simpletons will be Simpletons. Im waiting on the new Nexus, which should come soon after they release the Iphone5 lol.
Unless I think this phone is worth it...and they drop the price to $100 no mail in rebate.

Thanks, that was always a concern when it came to Motorola, at least IMO
Still, considering you can get an Epic for $100 off contract and run CM10 on it, and a SGS3 for $150 via Amazon/Best Buy, I am kinda unwilling to risk jumping on board another phone with slim development prospects, until I hear otherwise. Perhaps if CM accepts the device...

My main interest is because of WORLD phone. I can us e GSM on travel and makes life much easier. I wish GS3 had GSM slot. I read that there is some long way of getting there with GS3.
i would have been willing to put up with Motorola shenanigans if the thing was 720p, but it's only QHD
looks like i'll have to go with a NOKB phone.
in other news, i know someone who will LOOOOVE the Kyocera Rise on VM... $99!?!? cut the check!

Is the lte sim card user accessible? If so, you can probably use gsm from there, just like on some verizon droids not advertising gsm capability.

Doesn't it have a locked GSM slot? I remember hearing something about Verizon version being hacked to use GSM in europe. I doubt sprint version is any different, but your gonna have to research it.
How does the qHD screen compare to AMOLED???? No one has answered this for me.

I say wait for it to be up on amazonwireless/wirefly/letstalk. Though I was expecting them to charge 250$, they always charge 50$ for the keyboard fee. Considering that we most likely won't be seeing any other keyboard phones for a year (sprint already has 3 with this one having best specs). There might not be much choice.

This isn't true. LG has a keyboard phone in the pipeline called the Cayenne.
The Photon is a no-go for me due to embedded battery. As it is I need to use an extended battery with the Epic and always carry a spare for backup.
When batteries were always replaceable I considered physical keyboard my deal breaker. Now replaceable battery is my deal breaker. I'd like a keyboard too, but if I *HAD* to choose between keyboard and replaceable battery I'd go with the replaceable battery. Keyboard does me no good if the phone is dead...
