Honeycomb port? - Adam General

So, since the nook color already has one, how long do you think it will be until the adam gets a honeycomb rom?

I want to see this as well screw all the other roms. No offense. But I would love to see honeycomb on the adam be the XOOM or lg's slate come out.

This is going to be a big sticking point for the Adam if it doesn't get ported over quickly... Honeycomb looks pretty awesome.

Why would it not be ported over quickly?
And why a comment about it being a sticking point for Adam? Adam, we hope, will be a great platform for all kinds of experiments with Android and possibly other operating systems. Your post just seemed to have a negative bent to it, and I was wondering why.
There is, nor has there been any reason that I know of, to believe that the Adam will not get Honeycomb very early. Hope we can keep this XDA Adam forum positive and working toward making the Adam better and fun for all. That other forum has enough negativity to go around.

I honestly don't want Adam getting left in the dust with other Honeycomb tablets coming out. I've owned 4 Android tablets now and none of them have quite fit the bill. It's really hard to find a tablet that balances quality with price. And the NotionInk Adam looks like it's a good blend -- it's at a low enough entry price-point ($425 shipped) with pretty decent bones (Tegra2, 1GB RAM) but it really needs good software to complete the experience. Those good bones (Tegra2 chip) don't really mean much unless we are able to take advantage of them.
My last tablet was a ViewSonic G-Tablet and I definitely noticed a speed boost compared to my Chinese tablets, but Android 2.2 simply wasn't able to fully take advantage of the hardware (specifically the Tegra2's GPU). As you might have seen in some of the recent news, Google has put a good amount of effort into Honeycomb to allow them to take advantage of the GPU both directly in their OS (eg. transitions / animations) as well as building it directly into their APIs (eg. Renderscript). That being said, if I'm buying some nice hardware I expect to be able to take advantage of it (via the software layer)... NotionInk tried to do this with Eden, but most of their software does not take advantage of the GPU -- the only place I've heard them identify as using the GPU is for the rendering of the leaves when they are in the slanted switcher mode.
Also, don't be alarmed if you occasionally see a post with a negative / criticising tone to it. Notion Ink is a new company which has done a lot of things right, but they've also made a ton of mistakes along the way. I do hope them the best and I'm rooting for them to sort things out, but that doesn't mean I'm going to blindly follow them without pointing out things where I think they can improve. After all, that's what XDA is all about -- pointing out the things we want to improve in our devices and figuring out how to do it!
PS. Having owned the G-tablet and seeing what the XDA devs (Roebeet, Rothnic, etc) were able to do to that is one of the main reasons I decided to get the Adam. The Adam is using the Tegra2 SoC which is one of the key ingredients to the Honeycomb reference platform... so I expect that the XDA devs will probably be able to cook up a nice Honeycomb ROM once they can get their hands on the proper code.

its going to be a tough one..
Honeycomb's interface or eden?
Personally I think id choose eden therefore honeycomb doesn't affect me as much. I havent had a chance to use 3.0 though so we'll wait and see.

I guess it's important for Notion Ink that Eden is a success as it will fuel income from and development for the Genesis market.
From what I've read sofar, that cashflow is an important part of NI's business model.
So I hope that Eden develops into the best UI overlay there is and thar many tweakers decide to port Eden to their non-Adam tablets.

Except that Honeycomb takes advantage of the hardware, includes a new graphics rendering engine, and a other non ui improvements...

The key to honeycomb is hardware acceleration. laggy or choppy graphics will be a thing of the past.

I agree!
"that's what XDA is all about -- pointing out the things we want to improve in our devices and figuring out how to do it!"
Constructive criticism is a wonderful thing and definitely has it's place at XDA. That other forum has just degenerated into a 90% negative and bashing secession, and I would not like to see them move it over here.

i like to ask questions to the support team. sometimes they answer, sometimes they dont, but here's one for honeycomb. nothing new, but i just wonder what their progress on Honeycomb

i have contact with Stream TV Networks, Inc!!!

title says it, i have a direct line contact with a rep at Stream TV Networks, Inc, the manufacturer of the Elocity Tablets. a few weeks ago i submitted a web inquiry to the support site, stating that i was a user here on the XDA Developers site, and that there was progress being made to better the tablet. i asked that someone take the time to atleast visit this site and if willing to lend us a hand in uncovering the 'mysteries' of the tablet. i didnt hear anything and really didnt expect i would, until earlier today... i got a mysterious call on my cell so i let it go to VM, and forgot about it until just now. i listened to it, and low and behold it was a rep from Stream TV, saying they got my message, and was also visited by someone from XDA while at CES. now im in SW Florida so that visitor wasnt me, but someone out there face to face dropped the XDA sites name.
now i personally am a beginner rom cooker for windows 6.0 thru 6.5 at best, and android is still very new to me, but i would hate to lose this potential contact. im willing to do the leg work, and guess i might need to learn more very fast, but if a developer would like to work with me, and i can get them in contact with the Stream TV rep, maybe we can knock down walls here....
forgive the grammatical and spelling errors, but i need to get this to the community asap
im planning on calling the rep back tomorrow, and find out what he is all about, and how he can help us...
are there any educated questions that might want to have answered? that will help the community improve this product...
its even possible that since they are fully aware of us (XDA) they might even be watching the threads....
imagine, if a new vendor were to actually join the forum and help the community, just imagine the possibilities...
come on down Mr. Robertson (reps last name)...

I met with eLocity this past weekend at CES 2011. The new A7 will not be out until Mid Feb to March. There will be a few new A7 models as well as several 10-inch models.
I actually went over my issues with them and they requested me to send them an email outlining them also. They have several updates still planned for this device and are very much behind improving it as well as releasing their new line.

so it appears that i now know who 'the guy' is that met with them at CES...
I'm the one who contact them, I told them how great this site was and that Dexter should be sent a free Tablet to better and to provide him a job with the company to better this device as they are brand new in the market, I also advised they needed to create forums as this site was the only way of knowing what was to become in the future of the tablet. If i wasn't for XDA people wouldn't even know about it.
It seems a few of us met with them at CES 2011. Which is good. I talked with a few of their staff including the head software engineer there. Like I said, I got a real sense that they are going to work out the kinks that exist in the eLocity A7.
I brought up XDA and that there was work being done on that side and that it was important they didn't abandon their FIRST device as the new ones come out. It would be similar to what Augen did. The eLocity A7 is still ahead of many tablets coming out with its Tegra 2 processor so their is no reason for it to be left behind as if it were obsolete. They did say several updates were still planned for this device.

Well... good.
I wrote to tech support a week ago, never got a reply either by phone or email, and I just got my RMA to return the tablet. There's just so much aggravation one can take in this life.
If they keep up with this forum, they could at least provide some kind of firmware info, even if it's not a commitment. Like most techies (which I've managed for 30 years) they're wholly uncaring about the user experience... but the marketing people should know better.

I completely agree. Their tech support so far has been somewhat lacking. I remember calling a few weeks ago to get more information on the firmware patch they released and the "tech" literally went to website and read verbatim what was on the screen. I was like, "I can read the website too thanks." Her response was literally "yeah sorry we don't know anymore than what you do." Yeah....I understand they are a brand new company and are looking to launch a whole slew of new tabs so their focus may be a bit off but they shouldn't forget those that had enough faith in them to invest in their inaugural tablet.

"Lacking" is a mighty nice way of putting it. I would have said incompetent! Heck, they've done more harm than good with all the misinformation they have provided since day one!
Billy
didnt get a chance to talk with the rep until today and heres the highlight of how it went:
Q. why was the google marketplace not installed from the beginning.
A. google was not at the time signing off on tablet machines, thus no digital signature to access the marketplace.
the lead tech for the A7 has informed the rep that GAPPs can run on the tablet, and acknowledges that we appear to be weeks ahead of them with that...
Q. will honeycomb be offerend officially for the A7 when it comes out?
A. for the current version of the A7, no. there are hardware limitations that will not allow for a fully functioning upgrade. if we can port over honeycomb we can and a limited function version.
Q. will the A10 have honeycomb?
A. not initially, but it will be upgradeable officially. and the newer versions of the A7 will be multi-touch and allow for honeycomb.
he acknowledged that their tech support at this time was indeed struggling. they are still working on firmware upgrades for the current A7, and they dont want to force an upgrade everytime they fix something, but rather in patches...
i did ask about some of our other issues such as trying to get clockwork functioning, and our troubles with apps like skype. although i did not get an official stance on how far they are willing to help, he did say i could pass his information along to some* of the active developers to help imporve the product... ive already sent the info along to Dexter, we shall see what happens there.... during our talk i was also informed of some other info that might hep explain our skype issue.... ill fill in that info into the skype thread....
i also expressed my disappointment in the face that GAPPs was not there from the get go, and had i been a common 'plug and play' user, this thing would of gone back immediatly... but i had faith in XDA...
i did encourage them to become active in this thread and let it be known that the manufacturer is truly here to help...
I don't understand why the A7 was launched, then improve upon the next release after many have purchased the original A7. Many purchased the device around their mis-leading hype. I'm not completely dissatisfied with the device, but it would be my last. I'm hopefull some bright enterprising soul will look at this device and squeeze out what ever potential it has.
If the updates are only to fix what should have already been the box, then what's the use? A real update will exploit features and hidden potentials in the device that people want. This would speak volumes to their future and the future of products offered. Two cents worth.
i was not thrilled either hearing about lack of 'official future' for this device... but for $300 it did come with some powerful hardware, solid build (minus the multi touch and unlit buttons)... for what we have now (modification wise) i do feel better about my purchase... i just hope theres more improvments that we can squeeze out of this before the next generation comes out...
also mentioned about some of the lost features after the first update, like loss of sd-card formatting, and why they chose the mounting methods they did with sdcard and sdcard-0
im still using 1.0c version and havent looked at the 1/15 elocity or 1.1 dexter update yet...

I'm of like mind here. I've got a few more days before I need to request and RMA from tigerdirect.
For the most part, this device meets my needs, but the simple fact that elocity can't get simple 2.2 features implemented properly (like apps2sd) is ridiculous. They can't even get the device to report the size of the SD. The screen (even without the multi-touch issues) is pretty horrible. Web pages look ok, but photos look awful.
I'm bummed. I want so much to like this device, but its got a few too many disappointments. Maybe I'll get the Archos A70 - or even the Nook color (is it the same 800Mhz processor in the new Evo Shift?). Not quite as powerful, but much better SW implementation.

Sadly, I feel the same. Hardware wise the A7 is amazing, but lack of true multitouch, not so great viewing angles and most important, no future upgrade path is doing it for me.. I will also be rrturning it to BJ (with the extended January 24 return). Elocity can't complain we didn't give it a chance..
I HAD an Archos 70 for a little over a month before the screen broke on me. Those tablets are so thin they tend to be dangerously fragile. In addition, the firmware Archos has put out is terrible, still no certified FLASH from Adobe, and like the A7 almost every good App has to be hacked onto the tablet including the G-Apps package. Also, the A70's performance (only 256 RAM) was sub-par, it would often freeze, reboot, or lag far beyond what I've seen with the elocity A7. Since I loaded Dexters rom, I have been quite happy with my A7, and would not recommend any Archos product to anyone beyond the Gen7 A5 which runs Android 1.6 (donut?), but has a great DVR/TV dock, but obviously does not do Flash. I will say Archos has a larger community, but hopefully XDA and Stream can build on this product and its capabilities.
Please tell to Stream TV Networks about GPL
Let they post kernel sources, like bigger companies did and we will have ability to improve some functions with custom roms
Here list of tables which have or have not kernel sources

I moved on from the Elocity A7, got a Viewsonic G Tablet. Its $379 and with kernel source code the devs have made some great roms. Only negative is the screen.
I moved on from the Viewsonic G Tablet to the Elocity A7. I found the screen and the skin on the Viewsonic G to be unusable. The eLocity with the Dexter mod is a much better tablet.

From their FAQ page:Q: Will Android 3.0 Gingerbread be supported on the Tablet?
A: We anticipate that the Tegra 2 processor should have the ability to support the future Android release, but we cannot confirm it until Gingerbread has been officially released.
So is multi-touch the limitation that won't allow Honeycomb to run at all? I guess I can't understand why multi-touch would be absolutely necessary to navigate an OS. I thought when Google made a big deal about the upcoming Tegra II tablets being their design standard, that the processor is the critical piece, which would make sense to me. But multi-touch? I'm going to be really upset if I have to switch tablets again. I guess I'll wait to see what the big deal about 3.0 is when its released/reviewed before I go to Craigslist...again....

I had both before returning the A70 because I couldn't put up without a USB-to-computer cable connection.
I felt the Archos 70 was nearly perfect (light and stylish), but the 256MB RAM kills it. It'll get progressively slower.
The Nook is a great device. I loaded the mod and it was virtually a full-functioning tablet with a fantastic screen and sweet to hold, but the lack of real functioning Android buttons makes navigation possible but awkward. If B&N releases 2.2 and all its goodies, it's a good unit at $249.
For now, I'm tabletless. I'm amazed to me that designers have not started from a list of desirable features. The Nook is really designed as an e-reader and it's a great device as such, but the gTab (which I also returned), A70 and Archos all left out critical features that would have been cheap and easy to include...

[Q] Should I wait, or should I just buy?

So, A few really good locking tablets came out of CES 2011, The Notion Ink Adam, and the Motorola Xoom. Both run basically identical internal hardware, the only difference between the two being the OS (stock 3.0 vs a heavily modified version of 2.2). I am trying to decide to get the Adam now, or wait a few months, so I have a few very specific questions:
1. Which wifi only version will be cheaper, and how much will each cost.
2. Which OS experience will be better.
3. Which one has the best extra features (Does the Adam have something cooler then a barometer?)
thanks.
Xoom will have the best tablet designed OS, at least u would think. But then again the adam has been in the works for about the past 2 years lol so it should be in good shape.

Just letting you know that the Motorola Xoom was only running a stock version of 3.0 in the videos shown of it. I think the adam will supply you with the best of both worlds with eden and then swipe up and have normal andoird. Also Notion Ink is going to update the Adam to 3.0 when it comes out and they plan to work fast and hard on it to get the update out. Personally i think you would be sacrificing a lot of extra features such as full size usb ports, Pixel Qi display, A lot of community support and other features. Also just because Motorola has 3.0 first doesn't mean its going to be the best. A lot of companies will learn from their mistakes and improve as time goes on. Look at motorola's mobile phones with andoid some people love the ui and some people hate it.
I preorder a Adam but I cancel my order after I saw the xoom at CES. I know the xoom doesn't offer as much of features as Adam but one thing a really hate is companies making their own UI to go but their products. I like my android experience stock. The xoom is going to be a bit more expensive but you get what you pay for.

The Xoom does have a custom ui. Blur. It was running stock 3.0 at ces but it won't be when u get it. And all you have to do is swipe up and you have stock on the Adam. From what i've read the Xoom is shipping with 2.3 and will be upgraded to 3.0 at a later date.

The same link you reference has since being updated. Xoom is not having moto blur, stock 3.0.
UI's are pretty pointless, seeing you can just root and throw a custom rom on it. If the adam gets good reviews and dev support, you can bet a stock ui will be made. If you get a xoom you may even be able to throw eden on there, as long as motorola doesn't lock it tight.
So no fighting guys.

+1 , Motorola makes garbage , I use their products almost every day . Notionink Qi or bust !!!
I pre-ordered a NI Adam and I'm anxiously awaiting it, but I am impressed by the Xoom. The Xoom display is higher resolution, the bezels appear to be much thinner, and it comes stock with more internal memory. It will be interesting to see how the screen quality compares on the NI Adam to the Xoom. On the other hand, the swivel camera of the NI seems pretty cool -- although some find it to be gimicky. And it's still not clear to me how the HDMI works on the Xoom -- is it a mini/micro HDMI, through a dock, or regular HDMI right on the tablet?
If at a later point in time Motorola releases a Wifi only model at a lower price point (even with only 16GB of memory), I might be interested in picking one of those up...
i'm more interested in overall quality of the UI and apps that support tablet. Those who pre-ordered Adam did so with the intension of being upgraded to Honeycomb. Honeycomb is truly where all the tablets need to be at, because the all current Market application are not optimized for tablets. I went with adam because of the PQ. it might not be the cutting edge high end resolution, but my battery life is great. i can go though 12hrs easily...make me wonder if i should do a time lapse photography of how long the battery on the Notion Ink can last. but yes, the XOOM does has its advantages. if only the two can merge some how lol!

I have some doubts that NotionInk will be able to quickly release Honeycomb on their tablets. Unless Google has a major change of opinion -- it doesn't really make sense for Google to allow NotionInk to put Honeycomb on their device (at least with full Google Apps support) if NotionInk will really be including their own "market" on the device (aka Genesis). It will be really interesting to see how Google / NotionInk handle Honeycomb.
Regardless, I'm sure someone here at XDA-devs will get Honeycomb on the Adam pretty quick. It would be nice to see a merge of the NI adam and the Xoom. I'd really just like to see the Adam with really thin bezels (like their prototypes) and with a good quality display (higher resolution, good contrast/colors, and great viewing angle).

Has all the hype died already ?

Not seeing anything for the past week or so when it comes to development, kernel updates, custom themes....etc. Has development halted already? Would be satisfied even with a debloated, optimized stock Honeycomb ROM. The Thunderbolt had its first ROM 2 days after launch and it was opened up before it was even released...what gives, a so called open tablet and nothing. Anything to give me faith again that I don't own a 800.00 bookend would be appreciated.
Then I was thinking about the Nexus One.....Maybe this Xoom is the Nexus One of the Tablet market & will be the developmental Tablet that everyone does everything on.....I'm just so confused at this point I don't know what to do

I am confused by your post. What is bloated on the Xoom? It pretty much is a stock OS. You can root it, boost it to 1.5GHz, hook USB flash to it. What features are you exactly looking for?
Its an enjoyable browsing experience, the flash works pretty well, its great for reading ebooks and pdfs, you can listen to your music, watch videos, stream tv, connect to your desktop and have full access to your windows apps(or mac). Look at all your pictures, and if you take advantage of googles cloud, you can store them there and synch it with your phone and tablet without having to store them directly on your devices. It has a great RSS reader, N64 / SNES apps and hook a Wii controller up and have a console like experience, video chat, heck you can hook it up to a HD widescreen and it maintains the perfect aspect ratio and looks great, organize view and reply to emails, explore a really feature filled Map application with a great navigation features. You can even rant about Xoom features from your XDA App . Maybe you dont' agree, which is perfectly cool. Personal opinions are great and should always be respected. But I really am enjoying my Xoom, this is my first tablet, so maybe I am missing something that should be there.
All done with my xoom:
I will say, that I have had some fun with my xoom, but with any toy the xoom in my house has joined my other obsolete toys on my closet shelf. It was a interesting tablet computer I just haven't found much use for my xoom other than playing converted movies. I will just leave it in the box on the shelf, and someday someone will buy it from me at one of my wife's garage sales.

I agree with this. There's really nothing missing right now. Nor is there much bloat to remove. Dungeon Defenders? Sure, you could root and remove it, but it's a nice way to show off what the tablet can do.
Down the line, when Moto stops providing proper updates or something, a ROM might be warranted. But with the likelihood of this getting pure stock Android for at least a year to come, means there's really no need for a ROM right now.

Not sure how a tablet doesn't make it into your daily routine. It's the first thing I grab in the morning now (after it wakes me up, of course)
I don't know, the way this was marketed it should have bells, whistles, screaming sirens and the ability to control [email protected] least that is what I grabbed out of all the ads, commercials I have saw. I wanted something that came outta the hole like the OG Droid. I know it's still in its baby's footsteps but my main thing is it not taking full availability of this monster Tegra 2. According to the specs of this chip the Xoom is only using 1/16 of its capability. And the other thing I would like is for it to be snappy and responsive....AAAAAHHHHH maybe I'm asking too much, I am just at a crossroad right now & need re-alignment.

"once source is released ?" you meen IF SOURCE IS RELEASED they may never do so!. I still dont have a SD card slot that workes in my xoom.
Its a stock google device. Bloat? Cordy and dungeon defenders? Rename apk to bak in root explorer and they're gone. It'll be ROMmed eventually but right now just enjoy pure honeycomb minus lame blur skin.
Source will be released once more tabs are out. Lame ass tabs are hacked and OSs thrown on them that shouldn't be. Google is protecting their prized OS from being hacked onto a 7"gtab or nook.
I don't think it has to do with the loss of enthusiasm but the lack of the source as stated by other posters. Maybe spirits have been dampened by Google's decision to delay the release of the source code but once it's release there will be a fresh breeze of ROMs.
Poll options suck

The hardware companies are starting to talk about breaking away from Google. HP has purchased palm and is releasing its own tablet. Now Motorola is rumored to be considering the same thing. The Blackberry Playbook Tablet is now up for pre-order on Best Buy. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/iPad-Tablet-PCs/Tablet-PCs/pcmcat209000050008.c?id=pcmcat209000050008
The Holy Grail in this business is to own BOTH the OS and the hardware. Know any other company who has done this? Begins with an A... named after a fruit....
Perhaps Google is reconsidering just how open-source it wants to be.
We can't have a deodexed or optimized rom until the smali utilities are updated, which requires honey comb source to drop.

I hope you understand that the "holy grail" as you put it is a bit more complicated than you think. For those of us who ummmm....read and know ****. We refer to thing like that with a really fancy phrase called "vertical integration". Also, remember Apple is a vertical integration monster, owning the hardware, OS, AND * drum-roll* distribution channels. They've built their company up like this. Motorola is still a long way from having this sort of capability. They don't even own all their hardware. The article you posted contains statements taken out of context. Complaints like those are hardly rare and mostly amount to nothing.
I can promise you google will release the source code for Honeycomb. It is no surprise that they are withholding a product that was specifically designed for and still incomplete on the xoom. If they put out the source code small companies as well as every **** and jane could peddle incredibly ****ty software with google branding with a side pile of bricks large enough to build a bridge to russia. They rushed the release because of the Ipad 2. **** works OK. Give them some time to make 3.0 play nice with pretty much everything else, and if that includes phones, it might take awhile. Be patient.

All of this is not entirely true. The Holy Grail in business doesn't always mean you have to do hardware and OS. One pure example of where it didn't work out as planned is Nokia. Grant it there is more involved that just this, but it just serves as an example.
Mobile is a very complex platform that involves many, many factors. In fact one of Apples biggest moves in our decade was to switch from making their own in house processors(their own hardware) and to go with x86 Intel Chips (someone elses hardware). Yes apple puts the hardware together, but its not just their own hardware. Even for the iphone and ipad, do you know who makes the CPU/GPU for Apple phones? They partnered with a company called Samsung, who also makes android phones.
Motorola isn't rumored to be making their own OS, they are, but the kind of OS they are looking to build is much different from the android or apple. From what I have read in the technology articles they are building a web based phones, which is still very much an untapped market and will most likely be different than a smartphone experience. Motorola has done a solid job with the android platform so far. I love my droid, the droid X is great, the Atrix is a smart idea, and the Xoom is a solid device(all my personal opinion) , I think motorola is one of the best android devices out there right now and it makes sense for them to explore new territory, like they did with the Atrix. Honestly the other companies like HP need to find a way to compete in a sea of android devices especially with great manufactures like HTC and Motorola, i think its smart that they choose to differentiate themselves.(again my opinion)
There is no right way to do a business. Whether you choose to focus in do good in one thing, or create an empire that does many amazing things, every business has their way to what they do. I am not dissing apple, android, microsoft, nokia, you or anyone. But please you cannot break down these very complex companies with thousands of employees, dozens of divisions across the world into simple black and white answers.

honeycomb 3.2?

honeycomb has some ui glitches when running on our nooks, but honeycomb 3.2 is optimized for 7in screens, so if somebody were to make a honeycomb 3.2 rom for the nook, would that fix the ui glitches
Honeycomb 3.2 is still just a rumor. Granted Acer made the comment about it, but even when it comes out, we still wont have the source code until Google releases it. Our main problem is the display drivers we have for the nook don't support the lancher app in Honeycomb. Since the nook is using older technology, unless new drivers are made/released we'll need to find our own workarounds or continue to use software rendering for the UI.

Not according to this it's not: http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/20/huawei-mediapad-revealed-worlds-first-7-inch-android-3-2-table/
It's here folks -- the planet's first Android 3.2 tablet. Huawei just introduced a downright luscious new slate over in Singapore, with CommunicAsia being the launchpad for the 7-inch MediaPad. It's the first high-profile 7-inch tablet we've seen in quite some time, and somehow or another, it's managed to leapfrog most of the currently shipping Honeycomb tablets with a build of Android we've only ever joked about. Huawei tells us that Honeycomb 3.2 is essentially the same as 3.1, but specifically tailored to 7-inch tablets as opposed to 10-inch. Packed within the MediaPad's 10.5mm shell, there's a 217 pixels-per-inch IPS capacitive touchpanel, GPS, 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera, 5 megapixel rear-facing camera, 802.11n WiFi, a battery good for around six hours of life and a bona fide racehorse as a processor: a dual-core 1.2GHz chip from Qualcomm. If all goes well, it'll ship in the United States in Q3 2011.
It's a fair bit chunkier than the newfangled Galaxy Tab 10.1 (8.6mm), but still slimmer than the original Tab, which clocked in at 11.98mm. It weighs in at 390g (0.86 pounds), supports full 1080p playback, includes HSPA+ (14.4Mbps) 3G support, offers 8GB of internal storage (as well as a microSD slot) and comes pre-loaded with Facebook, Twitter, Let's Golf and Documents To Go. There's also a Bluetooth module, an HDMI output for catching those high-def flicks on the go, and the Flash 10.3 player ensures that those websites won't be a problem. Unfortunately, the company's left a great deal to the imagination -- like pricing, which is being "sorted with retail partners and providers" -- and all we've got for system RAM is a promise that it's "working with partners on specifics." Oddly enough, the company has "no current plans" to produce a WiFi-only model, which definitely puts a damper on those who aren't interested in ponying for carrier data. You can bet we'll be digging for more, but even with the surrounding mystery, calling us "excited" would be a severe understatement.
Update: There's a demo vid just after the break, and the first eyes-on shots have emerged from the conference.

Deeper blue may have more insight into 3.1, but working on 3.01, screen size never even appeared to be an issue. Our issues have always been with the drivers and properly compiling the OS for our hardware. Frankly, i have no doubt that if we had AOSP 3.0/3.1, we would have had something nearly as smooth as CM7 right now in no time....

Being supported by a "major" ROM like Cyanogenmod I bet we will get a couple Android versions out of this device.
I just wish the NC development scene would explode so even in the next year or so, the NC won't be forgotten. Considering it's only really CM, Phiremod, HC test builds, and some 1.2 builds, I'm not excited for the future of NC development.

Speak for yourself, CM7 with Tablet Tweaks is amazing. I dont need 10 different roms with ugly themes on them, i just need 1 solid rom thats customizable and thats what the Nook offers. If you are looking for something to flash a new rom for every night out of bordem, look to the Evo 4G forum, they flash for flashing sake.

I have an Incredible and I stick with CM7 nightlies on it too, the point I was trying to make is that even if it's 10 different roms with "ugly themes" it's still development, it's still interest, it's variety.
CM7 with tablet tweaks is undoubtedly a brilliant success, and I'm infinitely grateful for the efforts of the CM team, and Murdock. Phiremod is also brilliant, and has proven incredibly serviceable for me.
However, I'll say that I am still anxious to get a working build of Honeycomb. I hope DB, Divine_Madcat, et al won't see this as a criticism of their work, because I genuinely appreciate all the efforts that have been put in thus far - I'd just like to be able to have it at a DD state.
At that point, I think I'd settle.
For some reason it seems the Nook Color Community is dying out. When I got my Nook around March, there were at least 2 new threads in the dev section everyday. Now, it's lucky to get a new ROM in a month. And yet still, devices that are older get new stuff faster than us. So I highly doubt we will get Honeycomb that fast, even with the source.

Well, you certainly won't offend me. As it is, i wish i had the ability to make the SDK build more than it is; but I have hit my roadblocks. Our next big project will be ICS, since we should have the source for that, and with the lessons learned from CM7, make it into a daily use product fairly quickly. As we go one, we will see our hardware becoming more dated, but sadly, that happens to the best of us.

Look, im sorry, but i am going to be blunt; just because we aren't getting a million "me too!" roms, does not mean we are dying out. If anything, we are ramping up as CM7 gets more and more polished. i mean, in just the last week, USB host support got released for the nook, adding in a second hardware feature officially unlocked. Dalingrin, Fattire, nemith verygreen, and others, have been tirelessly working on our device, and that doesn't show signs of stopping.
As it is, we have gone from a basic ereader, to:
a fully fledged tablet running Android 2.3, overclocked to 1.2-1.3Ghz, with hidden bluetooth and USB host enabled, and dev support that has not faltered since Nov. I would not trade our dev group for any other out there.

Thank you! Isn't it quality that we want over quantity? I'd much rather have 1 GOOD implementation of an OS than 20 bad ones. CM7 is amazing, the work that Divine_Madcat and deeperblue did with HC is rather remarkable considering how little they had to work with.
It's kind of like a free market economy: those that are successful will float to the top, and that's what's happened in this dev community. The good ROMs have definitely stuck around, and the questionable ones didn't. That doesn't mean the community is on its death bed, it just means that the community is maturing. That's a very good thing, IMO.
Yeah, here's another small article on that 7" Android 3.2 tablet. I agree that it'd be wonderful if this could be brought over to the Nook Color, whether it's built from source (ideal scenario) or "ported" from an existing build as with the current Honeycomb builds for the NC. Just the fact that everything is tuned for the exact size screen we have is huge!

Sadly, i don't see it helping too much. The build from that device MIGHT help get rid of the 120DPI limitation, but that is about it.
Now, if somebody were to release a HC tablet built on the Omap 3630, we would be much closer to business...

Like the phone market, if someone released a low budget HC tablet running a single core. Don't see it happening though.
There are three things that excite me about this Android 3.2 tablet:
1. Honeycomb being changed for a 7 inch screen. I always thought Honeycomb was too much for 7 inches (without going to an insane low DPI). I would love to know what tweaks they made.
2. Unless I missed something this is the first Honeycomb tablet that is not Tegra. That hopefully means the days of Honeycomb apps being Tegra only in many cases is coming to an end. Since Chainfire doesn't work on Honeycomb it would be nice if the app developers did away with the Tegra requirement voluntarily.
3. I am excited that the above two improvements will surely be baked into ICS from the start, meaning that once we DO get the source for Android tablets, we will be able to have a version made for a 7 inch screen.
As far as getting before ICS? Well to me it seems like Honeycomb 3.2 is to Huawei what Honeycomb 3.0 was to Motorola- an OS they get first as reward for being such good Android vendors (read $$$).
It will be winter before we know it, then we get the source for all this cool stuff. Google's gotta pay for that Honeycomb development first...

I think there are two reasons for that. One is the release of Cyanogenmod stable, the other is Google announcing that they will not release the source code for Honeycomb. CM covers that basics pretty well, and the lack of HC source makes it difficult to explore the cutting edge.
I think that Cyanogenmod will eventually release a ROM for the Nook Color based on Ice Cream Sandwich, when (or if) Google decides to release the source code for that. The ICS source code may revive the rest of the Nook Color development community as well by making it easier to put out cutting edge ROMs.
"ICS by the end of the year" could mean Cyanogenmod and others won't get their hands on the source code until December 31. What I find unsettling about this situation is that right now the manufacturers of new tablets have to crawl on their hands and knees to Google in order to release a Honeycomb tablet. Once Google gets used to having that power and control, will they ever go back to the old, more open way again?
While I do NOT want to wait 'til December for Google to get its act together, the current state of CM does a lot for my patience. I'll use a gadget for as long as it's useful to me. The Palm IIIx still gets used every day, the NC may be no different.

Anyone else notice that development for the A500/A501 sucks?

I'm just sayin..... I'm not trying to start anything its just that every time I come on to XDA theres never really a new topic for the Acer A50-
I have an EVO 4g and theres always new topics and development and I have had other HTC phones and been here for a frew years now
With no bootloader access (except for It's Magic), No drivers, and slow support from manufacture and otherwise.
I have a feeling that this tablet is out to lunch and soon out to pasture.
What do you think?
Sent from my Acer Iconia A500 using xda premium
I also own an A500 and a HTC EVO 4G. Although I do understand a bit where you're coming from, I think it's mostly a difference between a phone and a tablet forum.
I also think it's a difference in quantity versus quality. We have some very nice, stable ROMs for the A500 where everything works. For most EVO ROM announcement threads, I just disregard them after reading the OP and seeing that 4G doesn't work, GPS has problems, MMS has problems, landscape Rosie doesn't work, etc. Plus quite a few of those EVO "ROMs" are just tweaked versions of earlier released ROMs that are heavily themed.
Also, I think the A500 community here on XDA is a little guilty of running off quite a few of our devs by being ungrateful, overly demanding, etc. Compound that with some devs having a little bit of an attitude, and I think we're lucky to have the devs that we still do.
Although I almost immediately wanted to root/ROM my EVO 4G, I was perfectly happy with stock root on my A500, and that's basically what I'm running now. I flashed ezterry's 3.2.1 ROM, tweaked it a little myself, threw ADW Launcher EX at it with a nice theme, and I'm a happy camper patiently waiting for Acer to release ICS.
There is a big difference between phone ownership and tablet ownership. I would have to guess its something like 10,000 android phone owners to every 1 android tablet owner. And the Evo 4g was the flagship of Android phone for a long time. I too owned the Evo 4g and my wife still has one. I moved on to the Evo 3d and love it. I agree, it would be nice to see some excitement in these forums but when I use my tablet I want it to work and work right. I switched back to a rooted stock rom because almost all of the roms I found were really just themes and had removed apps that I like. The roms that are highly customized like thors or flexstriker always have glitches or changed to much. I'll run stock until ICS drops and then I hope some more exciting developing will be going on. My work just purchased me an Ipad 2 and I have played with it for a few days now. I'll have to say, the Ipad will be used for work, but when I want to play I'll be reaching for my A500.
You know what I hated about all the roms for the evo, it was all the badly themed roms with the same tweaks.

Exactly. Lately, we've had a new kernel released, along with a new recovery by Dres. And a couple of the newer released roms (3.2.1) @Civato and myself and a couple of others. So I wouldn't say that development has ceased. I would say, that Dev's and Modders have pushed HC about as far as it can go.
And yes, some people like to use the forum for their own battle ground. They know who they are. This isn't a backwoods chat room, but some people just like to start scandals.
But I am sure most people appreciate the work that is done. If you want to know how much work is put into things, get a stock rom, and try doing it.

It's easy to complain and say that there's nothing going on when you're not even giving any suggestions. I mean, more-or-less all the interesting things have already been tried and done, and the next thing to do would be to fundamentally alter how Honeycomb works. And that is simply a very big task to undertake.
Of course we could also go the same route as people like to go on other devices, ie. release a gazillion different ROMs where the only difference is in theming and color scheme. But that isn't development.
So go ahead and make some suggestions or wishes about what you'd want to see. Also keep in mind that HC is HC and many of us are satisfied with it as it is. Like e.g. I really have only one or two things to improve on that would even be possible with HC, everything else I want would require a whole new OS altogether. And as that ain't possible I really have no reason to develop for A500 at all, I simply don't view releasing yet another HC ROM that fixes the two minor nibbles I have with it as being worth my (or anyone else's) time.

Well, if you're referring to ICS then I have to say that even ICS doesn't address the fundamental issues I have with the whole Android platform. Of course it is a step up from HC, I'm not denying that, but even ICS is plenty rough around the corners and patched up with Mickey Mouse - plasters and chewing gum.

As much as I like Android, this is what you get when you get a search company writing an OS instead of a company that's been making OS's for 20+ years...
Bells and whistles are great, but not if your core functionality is farked.

On the whole, I don't think you have the right to complain. The devs are nice enough to share what they do. If you don't like it then make your own rom...
Waiting to see what you can come up with....

Oh, we should post a sign. "Don't feed the Trolls".
Noticed how the OP edited his post, to include the 501 after I posted a simple response.
Some people, just show absolutely no appreciation to the hard work people do. We do it, so others can enjoy it.
Is it a sense of accomplishment, yeah, it is. Especially when it works for 95% of the users.
I'm no Dev. I'm a "fry cook". But I understand what Devs go through. Been there, did that.
Some people, will never be satisfied, no matter what you do. It's a pity.
Ought to kill this thread, as really, as the OP showed, it's an insult to all dev's and Modders.
And people wonder why the devs and modders leave xda. Just look at the title that was posted.
The best thing, is to ignore such posts, from such people, as they are just designed to get people into a pissing war, while they sit back and get amusement.
No way!
Without the efforts of many developers we wouldn't have the following:
USB 3G support for the A500
Eye candy boot animations and themes
Lean operating environment by removing uneccesary startup software
Improved GPS response
Improved kernels for stable overclocking
As far as I'm concerned, the Dev contributers are doing a splendid job.
HTC Desire
ROM: MIUI-XJ v2.2.10 (D2EXT X-PART)
Recovery: 4EXT Classic
Acer Iconia A500
ROM: civato-FLEXSTRIKER-R9.5

1. The tools aren't all open. They simply aren't. Remember the thor fiasco?
2. No one cares if you're a blonde from Kentucky. Posting about waiting & hoping will do nothing for anyone.

If you're going to complain about stuff not being done, learn to program, and do it yourself.

Drop the elitist attitude.
Not everyone has the qualities needed to make a programmer, just as not everyone has the qualities to become a successful artist; some people simply are better wired for it than others. Not to mention actual real-life issues.

True, but if you are going to make a thread titled "development for my tablet sucks", you should be ready to ****ing drop some command line ninja skills.
It seems like the op was meaning to say "development seems to have stalled", but inflammatory language is inflammatory...
(ps, I am all sorts of drunk (woot woot switfkey autocorrection) and the useless bickering of the A500 forums makes me an angry drunk)

Heh. Mind if I join you? Got a bottle of vodka and I'm bored out of my skull, getting drunk sounds like a rather good idea!
