Getting to Know Each Other - EVO Shift 4G General

It would be cool to see what everyone's background is.
I am a Corporate Trainer currently, but spent a few years as a Uverse Tech for AT&T working on IPTV, HPNA, VDSL, and in home networking.
I have no programming background and have found XDA to be an amazing resource.
I started off on a T-Mobile Dash and moved to the G1 when it came out. Switched to Sprint and the Hero about a year ago.
I finally rooted in June and haven't looked back since.
Sent from my HTC Evo Shift 4G

Sprint retail rep for about 3 years. Very very very minimal programming background. Been stuck on Android since the HTC Hero with Sprint which was our first dip into the Android world and haven't looked back. Went from the Hero to the EVO and now using both the Epic and Shift. Rooted all devices except my Shift. Love XDA for educational purposes. I love Android so I'm constantly trying to increase my understanding of the OS.

I am a mathematician working as a researcher at the National Institutes of Health. Currently I am working on restructuring Social Security Disability Insurance. I do quite a bit of programming, but mostly with MATLAB, and am proficient with Linux, but know no Java. I used to do quite a bit of themeing/modding for the G1 (Dr. Cloverdale's Magic Elixir was probably my most popular) but have not done anything in awhile.

I don't usually do this, but why not.
Senior systems engineer for a major financial firm.
Programming background, but switched to engineering 15 years ago.
Comp Sci degree.
Spent more $ on smartphones that I'll ever admit to.

Struct Engr.
Tech Enthusiast
Hero was my first smartphone, got it 1 year ago.
Looking to get into some theming for the shift

Pfft. Compared to the rest of yous, I'm a nothing. Guess you people have a brighter and more financially secure career path. I'll be working my ass off and still be among the working poverty class.
I have a job at least. Not a glamourous one or something to brag about. I have a woman that loves me and I love her. I think I will be able to make it, maybe not in style though.

Former robotics tech at a auto plant for 5 years until a machine malfunction took half of 2 of my fingers...company is paying for me to go back to school and I'm going for computer networking. Got a hero 1 year ago and rooted and rom'd the **** out of it and am picking up my shift on Tuesday. Only programming experience I have is writing a ton of programs and games for TI graphing calculators durring math class lol I kicked ass at that, but I start school next semester and will be gaining some knowledge that I hope to use around here.
Sent from my wifes shift because its way cooler than my hero...

I just got out of college, and I'm looking for a web design job.. but I'm working at a gas station until one comes around. I really want one soon, because I'm trying to get married.
My last phone (hero) was my first smart phone. It was 200% better running cm6 than sense, so I've been a root/mod supporter since then.
I recently started learning android apps with a guy I went to school(he knows java)
so far, I learned how to make a button that changes color and makes the phone vibrate when it is clicked.

I'm a Design Engineer working for a company that paints electronics for wealthy people.
I've designed a couple of accessories for iPads (handles, stands, etc.), and plan on designing more in the very near future. I also help to figure out ways to take apart computers and other electronic devices, and build fixtures to take them apart before painting, and put them back together after painting. I've pretty much found my dream job right out of college.
I got my first smartphone with the Hero in October of 2009, and had that until the Shift came out, and I'm loving how much smoother everything is on the Shift, without even rooting the thing.

Soon to be college freshman, going for my Bachelor's in Bio before moving on to PreMed. I'm a tech enthusiast, but more importantly, I'm obsessed with customization. I'll spend hours playing with my phone, computer, World of Warcraft, and any other UI I can customize.

T-Mobile G1 to iPhone to HTC Hero (My experiences)

Honestly I'm not sure exactly what is causing me to write this thread, but I thought that I would share my experiences over the last 6 months while switching back and forth between devices. Hopefully someone will read this and feel like they have seen a very honest opinion about the epic David vs. Goliath battle of smartphones.
(Incoming wall of text)
My first "real" smartphone was a T-Mobile G1. I thought that it was a great phone out of the box, but then I caught the bug after visiting xda-developers and got into rooting and running different ROMs on an almost daily basis. A few months after this started, the whole debacle with Haykuro went down and then it felt like there was a very large shift in the way information was distributed. I didn't really like the way things had been going, so I hopped on board the first opportunity that I could to get out of my G1.
In June, I was offered the ability to combine my personal cell phone service into my company's plan where they would cover the cost since I have to use my phone for business purposes. This gave me a good reason to jump away from T-Mobile, as well as have my phone plan taken care of for me. Since they were on AT&T, I thought that I would give an iPhone a swing.
I will say that I adored my iPhone. Maybe a bit too much even. I felt more concerned about keeping it in immaculate condition than feeling like I could use it on a regular basis. The moment it came out of the box, a screen protector went on, as well as a case. I realized then, that my iPhone wasn't really an iPhone anymore. At least not in that sleek sexy way that they show them in the commercials. Undaunted, I dove into modding my iPhone after jailbreaking it, working on themes, playing with non-sanctioned apps and just about everything else you can do with an iPhone. It was at this moment that I realized that the iPhone was less of a well rounded business phone, but instead (for me personally) more of a portable gaming system that allowed me to use my email, text and make some phone calls.
Recently I decided that the iPhone community was frustrating me to no end. The zealots that preached "Mac is king" made me grow irritated to visit the forums that I had once posted all of my themes and tweaks. I realized that the community wasn't one that I was overtly welcomed to, no matter how polite or elegantly I made my points. Maybe I'd just forgotten to sip the kool-aid, but I realized I wasn't in love with my phone, and I wasn't as taken in by everything that these people thought it could do, or so kind as to overlook the iPhone's many glaring faults. I decided to trade my iPhone for an HTC Hero and some extra dough.
I got my Hero in the mail yesterday, and unfortunately the experience wasn't the greatest out of the box. I'd lost my touch with the Android devices, so it took me some time to get ADB up and running again on my work laptop and make sure that the drivers were all hunky-dory. I loaded the Modaco ROM and everything seems to have worked well so far. Looking through the apps available, I realized how pampered I was with my iPhone. There literally were apps for just about everything, as well as some that I absolutely didn't need. Seriously, who needs 25 different fart soundboard apps? I think the thing I'm a little let down with the most was the lack of decent games, even after almost 6 months away from the OS. I'm very pleased that UniWar has made it to the system, and in fact, was the final nail in the coffin of owning an iPhone.
Gaming aside, I'm hoping that I fall back in love with the Android OS. It's so much prettier than the iPhone counterpart. Even better is that I can tether over wifi and connect my iPod Touch and play the games that I'd lost with my iPhone. Sure I have two devices in my bag now, but I feel like I have a better phone, as well as a separate gaming device.
In the end, I think I'm happy so far, but only time will tell if this is just the bliss of a honeymoon that will fade to frustration. Knowing I can't have 3G speeds was a hard pill to swallow, and one that I didn't do the research beforehand. I learned my lesson, but still adore the little Hero sitting alongside me on my desk.
I think there will always be a soft spot in my heart for the iPhone, but I think I came to the party a little too late. With Apple tightening their grasp on owners of the 3GS with every patch, I have little doubt that Steve Jobs will eventually have his way, and the community of 2 million or more users who enjoy their jailbroken devices will move to another platform, possibly the Android. We can only hope that some of the fantastic developers eventually make their way to this side of the fence.

Maybe it is my ignorance, but why can you not have 3G speeds on the Hero? Sprint's network is 3g.
Thank you much for the writeup. the HTC Vogue was my first smartphone (WinMo) and while I enjoy the incredible ability I have to customize my phone, the operating system behind it all is still WinMo, and that means it's still fairly buggy. In the end I've begun to realize that as I "personalize" the phone for myself with programs and custom Roms, I'm doing this to make up for WinMo shortcomings, which is something I'm not sure I should have to do to get an enjoyable user experience.

N1 if it EVER comes to sprint!
or maybe the next gen webos phone?
im not buying the evo as most are, im not fond of the design, too bulky IMO.
I'm going for the Evo. I was also concerned about the size, so I went to a T-Mobile store and scoped out the HD2. The size wasn't as bad as I'd feared.

I've already brought my Palm Pre out of retirement and the last five updates that it received while I was away (yes, five!, and a phone that is actually supported and receives updates was surprising to me too) have really made it shine. It's a completely different phone. The high-performance 3D games rock, the web browser kills the one in the Hero, and the whole experience just feels better designed, more natural, and far more professional overall.
WebOS kicks major ass and with HP backing it and "doubling down" on the operating system I think that it has an enormous amount of potential, especially with updated hardware. So my next phone is definitely going to run WebOS. I'm tired of this fragmented Android nonsense and manufacturers who don't stand behind their products at all.
The WebOS homebrew community is utterly amazing as well. They actually publish the source code for their modifications and work together under one project:
http://www.webos-internals.org/wiki/Main_Page
Palm also supports them wholeheartedly. You don't have to root your phone, you simply enter the Konami code (literally by typing upupdowndownleftrightleftrightbastart--a badass easter egg) and it gives you full developer mode access to the device. Palm also publishes the source code that they modify (including the Pre's Linux kernel) under the GPL. They do this automatically without their customers having to stage a formal Twitter protest and waiting four months like HTC made us do last time:

To all my fellow Hero owners, best of luck with your abandoned handset. To those of you who decide to stay with Android, best of luck with your future abandoned handset.
Now that I know Fixxer isn't getting one, I'm going with the Evo.
@Sawawa good luck with your abandoned company (Palm). Whatever talent hasn't already quit will likely be muted by HP.
Maybe I have low expectations, but I only expect a cellphone to last me 6 months - 1 year. The Hero has done that already and still has plenty of life left in it. Whichever Ebayer gets mine will be lucky.

Only one person has quit, and his position was obviated by the HP acquisition. The other executive, the Director of Carrier Marketing, was quite clearly fired for failing to properly market the device, but was allowed to leave gracefully to save face. No one else has left. They believed in the company enough to stick with it while things were dire, I doubt many of them are now suddenly eager to leave with the future looking so bright. HP didn't just spend 1.2 billion to watch the asset that they purchased languish and die.
Whatever. I'd rather be on a platform with some upside. The situation with Android is deteriorating, not getting better. If Google really releases Android 2.2 at their upcoming IO Conference in a few weeks (as is widely expected) can you imagine what kind of clusterfuck that will be?
1.5, 1.6, 2.0, 2.1, 2.2 = LOL

HP killed the Ipaq (PDA), HP also killed the Voodoo brand after they bought it in 2006, so I wouldn't put it past them to squander an asset. I think competition drives better results, so I hope HP can keep Palm together.
I also fail to see Android segregation as hurting anyone. Apps that don't work on different versions aren't available in Market by design. Someone running 1.5 who is upset they don't have Latitude without buying a new phone doesn't qualify as a clusterfuck.
Old phones become obsolete, despite the platform. Check out the Iphone 4.0 software, only the 3gs and the new Iphone are actually going to utilize the majority of the new features available.
I'm at a crossroad and totally not sure what phone will be my next. i have to say that I want an EVO really bad but at the same time, I want a phone that will have prompt future support. My current thinking is that HTC (devices other than Nexus) does not fit that bill. So, at this point, I'm leaning toward the Nexus.

My thoughts exactly. I have a bad taste from what happened with 2.1 on the hero. I don't wan to re-live that with the evo. I think the nexus one would be my next choice also.
I have a pre also and will most likely sell it but if hp makes a super phone in the near future, I will probably go back to webos. I like webos but it is just not growing at a rapid pace and with all the stability issues with the company. The phones not selling for as much as it used to on ebay. I am gonna get out so I don't lose too much money.
Evo and XDA Devs, FTW! Sure hope toast and Flipz get one too.
I'm not eligible to upgrade till who-knows-when, so there will most likely be some exciting phones out by then lol. While I do love Android, I am also a little anxious to see what Blackberry OS 6 (and by then some new hardware) brings to the table. Regardless of OS, I'm fairly certain my next phone is going to have a physical keyboard.
Evo all the way. Since I wasn't thinking when I made my XDA user, I'll have to change it to EvoMeng

One Last Stand

This is my first thread as an OP, and ironically probably my last in the HeroC forums.. I converted over to the 3vo yesterday (and yes the rumors are true, it is amazing), so this is somewhat of a farewell thread but also one last testament to how awesome this little hero is..
i was on vacation last week with my wife's family in the mountains of Tennessee, we get a cabin there every year.. but everybody in the family has a smart phones, there are 2 brand new windows phones on AT&T and the rest are sprint, 2 evos a nexus s, and a random asortment of other phones.. but they all have looked at the hero with disdain, because most had the hero stock (which we all know sucked balls), and only 2 of them actually let me root it, but wouldnt let me optimize it at all.. but they all looked at my little hero like it was a piece of trash, because they had all moved on to "better" phones.. but on to the point, up in this mountain there was hardly a cell signal, the AT&T phones had zero signal, and the others were hit and miss.. but, my hero had signal the whole time.. not only did it have signal, but i wireless tethered to the laptops so we could get on the internet.. so while their condescending "awesome" phones sat lifeless on their night stands, my hero reigned supreme and gave life to their devices..
i know that didnt really have a lot to do with anything, but thought i would throw it out there, this phone despite being left to die by sprint and HTC, continues to conquer where other phones fail.. my hero shall sit in a glass case as it watches over its android kingdom..
and many thanks to all of the people that have helped me around here, and hopefully i have returned the favor at some point.. i will still be floating around here especially until the 3vo forums settle down a bit.. but raise a glass to our hero, heres to the greatest of the phones that was never meant to be great..
Cheers!

Well said!!!....Not only did my Hero serve me well for 16 months in the face of all those who scoffed. It's now been put into service teaching my 11 year old the ways of Android.
It's amazing how many people revere their Heros. It's just like your first love. I went through the Palm Pilot thing, and this really reminds me of that. People posted about upgrading, but talked about the respect and admiration they had for their first device.
Good luck to you in 3vo land, sounds like that community is really getting going.

Now that I have the 3VO, I somewhat miss it for things like the jogball, root, custom ROMs. I sold it to a coworker so I still have visitation, lol.

New User of the HTC Droid Incredible? Enter here to introduce yourself!

Hi guys, I started this thread with the intent that the new users of our forum could first stop in and introduce their selves. They are the new blood around here and may very well have something useful to share with us! Use this thread as you see fit as long as you keep it clean and follow all the XDA rules
Enjoy!!!
Here I'll start us off:
Hi my name is Josh. I'm 27, married to the best woman in the world. We have a beautiful 5yo daughter who is now in school. I have one dog, one wolf mix, a cat, a hamster and a tank full of minnows(my daughter said we are not allowed to use them as bait, lol) I am U.S. Army Medically Retired. I was a 91B(mechanic)(originally a 63W for you old heads) in the Army until I hurt my back. I've been to Iraq twice, Egypt once, and did maint support operations on the Port of Beaumont, Texas and the Port of Olympia in Washington. I was there while the riots where going on. I did enjoy serving my country and am very proud to have been given this special opportunity. Now that I am out of the mil I can focus more on my family, living life and of course my geeky addiction.
Its been a fun road to now. I started out with my first Android phone the HTC Droid Eris. I enjoyed the works of many great devs and learned so much while using there Rom's. workshed, Tazzpatriot, condemned soul, conap, gnarlic man the list goes on... These guys are really who got me interested in developing and everything else. With there help a did a little theming for the Eris. It was mostly just minor stuff for Cm. As time past I eventually moved on to the HTC Droid Incredible. I've been here since March. I started out again doing some theming then I moved up to my DTR's (BUNKER BUSTER DTR and yes since I'm retired U.S Army thats why it is named something militaryish). Its a fun little project and its also my way of sticking it to the man, lol. Now most of my focus goes to my Roms. I have Pure Speed which is my first and my baby. I'm so proud of that rom. I also have Hybrid Speed, Sub Sonic and my latest my first ever 3.0 rom Pure Shooter.
All in all this Inc community has taught me so much and showed me a whole new world I never knew existed. We have good support, good people and great devs here. My time spent here is now just keeping my work updated and trying to help out as much as I can.
Anyways, enough with me blabbering on... Lets hear about you!
You know the phone is awesome when the introduce yourself thread is created a year and a half after release.

Hi Don me too, lol. BTW what are you doing in here old timer? Just kidding.
New Guy
Retired Navy with 30 years in Subs. (Missile Technician)
I used this forum to root the other day.
This site seems to be used as a reference for others so I went to the source.
I rooted to the CM7 and the new radio that came out with gingerbread.
After going through the rooting process I am ready not to go through the setup again. TB kept force closing after each app install(took a long time) I'll wait for awhile and let the guru's play with the new GB and see what develops.
I am Ryan, been here since day 1. The root process was crazy involved then... Memories! But I got it, after three days of trying after work! I try to help here from my experiences I've had with my Inc. I've rooted my girl's Desire, my Xoom, and this week my buddy's Inc is getting the business!
I've done some minor tweaking of existing code, but haven't done any ROM creating/modding. I've made themes for myself, so I understand how to replace/edit/create draw 9 PNG's and replacing other files in APKs. I've become pretty good with GIMP, but have never created images from scratch.
Other than that, I'm a smart ass, like to golf, and am currently moving in with my girl. I've met really cool people in these forums, who I continue to talk with via Twitter or Gtalk.
Looking forward to helping anyone out, and meeting new/existing DInc owners.

This sounds like an android support group ha
anyway..
Hi!
My name is Paul I've had my phone since November of last year, but only later decided I wanted to try this rooting shenanigans in January. I was again slow to switch from sense over to AOSP, but now since I've done all that I really love my phone and even now I just figured out there's a whole mess more you can do with widgetlocker and other theming apps.

I've recently found a really cool site for android theming:
http://mycolorscreen.com/category/android/
Some of the stuff on there I had no idea you could even do, it's amazing.
I think there'll probably be more user who've had their Dinc for a while rather than newer users BUT ANYWAYS.... Well my name's Antonio and I'm 17. I'm hoping to go to either Princeton or Boston University and become an Anesthesiologist. The Dinc is my first smartphone and I got it in September 2010, but didn't root until sometime around December. I had no idea what root was, I found out more about it when Gingerbread first came out and builds started coming out for the Dinc. I began to do some research and I found Xda, but I didn't become a member until March of this year. I have since then become a flashaholic and the longest continous time I've had a ROM has been Pure Shooter for two weeks so far.... Do we get a gold star for this? Lol

Well I'm not new, but I figured I'd chime in a bit!
Hi all! I'm Bob and I'm a college student with a major in Computer Science and minor in Information Systems. The HTC Incredible is my first smartphone, and since I got it on launch week, I've been hooked! I was pretty active on Android Forums, helping people out and whatnot but I finally decided to make XDA my permanent home.
I've recently begun developing apps for Android just as a fun side project. I have not made a ROM yet, but I have been heavily debating it. I think I'll give it a try when the real Gingerbread OTA comes out, but we'll see since I'll be busy with school starting back up AND work in a few days...
I try to help people out because this is a community. I try to give feedback as much as possible and like to point people in the right direction if ever needed. I am a bit of a ROM flashing addict and even the ROMs that I don't try, I at least read about and get familiarized with! The Inc community is seriously awesome, and we've only gotten better as a whole. Thanks to the devs and to all the members for making my hobby even more enjoyable!
cool idea; you know, i've always wondered about a lot of us here..we always talk phones and whatnot, but we dunno anything about eachother lol
well i'm jay (clearly lol) and i'm from the shore of NJ, born and raised (not to be affiliated with that dirtbag trash on that bull**** TV show, sigh.) i'm 24, i've got my bachelors from rutgers university and my masters from monmouth..unfortunately, since our wonderful government is utter **** right now, the fact that my degrees deal with getting a job in the state/federal government realm isn't helping whatsoever, as I can't land a gov job for the life of me...so i currently work for a small family-owned Verizon store that sells vzw phones, accessories and FiOS. besides that, i'm a musician of 11 years (bass, guitar, drums) and i play bass in a band.
as for my wonderful android journey, it only began in may of 2010 when my buddy sold me his htc eris for 20 bucks when he got his dinc on release day in the mail in april. he told me it'd be fine for me since it was my first smartphone, but he was sick of it already (had it for like 4 months lol) and that it was super laggy to him, so he got the dinc. well, the eris lasted me barely 3 months..even after rooting it and upping my processor speed with setcpu, the thing was still super laggy and the typing lag was atrocious..
so i was one of the people who ordered the Dinc during the Great Amoled Shortage of '10 hahah...ordered it early July, and got it on July 29th...kept it stock for a while, thought the phone was AMAZXING bc there was no typing lag etc...and then that damn Froyo OTA hit, and my phone just started crapping out. typing lag was about as bad as it was on the eris after that OTA, and i almost threw this phone so many times. so finally, in january of '11 i rooted...put on lou's redemptive revolution, still had keyboard lag, and was just super angry.
then i saw Z roms come about, and my lag was finally gone, and i've been playing with new roms ever since. so yeah, safe to say i've easily had this phone for a year and have no intentions on upgrading anytime soon! haha
whoa, that was a book! but whatever. i love my inc, and after just installing synergy again and the Warm theme for the first time, it's bringing me back to my early days of rooting when my first Z rom was warm z two.point.two!! ahh nostalgia.
I'm somewhat new here, due to my recent activity. But I recently got hold of an Incredible after my Droid A855 had growing digitizer issues. I haven't looked back because I really grew to like the device because it's extremely light (sometimes a little too light for comfort), and it's been smooth as melted butter. I'm currently running gingerbread inc deck 1.2b beta on my rooted Incredible. For what I consider(ed) a stop gap device, I'll be hard pressed to find a 4G phone I'll like enough to use my upgrade from VZW..
Another march guy. My name is cameron. I'm 17, currently jobless, have way too much on my plate for a 17 year old, and have the best girlfriend and family I could ask for.
The job field I want to get into its automotive. I've been tearing apart 350 small blocks, 429 big blocks, honda engines, and everything in between since I could walk.
I'm an admitted crackflasher (flashed every rom in the dev section at least once) I was introduced to android when I got a motorola defy for christmas (it blew)
One day I eventually wanna have a family of my own with this girl right here.

Hold on; let me play a sad song on the violin while you complain.
Day in and day out, I am smiling. There isn’t any specific reason in particular, but everything in my life right now is perfect. Not only do I have an amazing job with oodles of growth opportunity at Taco Bell. Right now I’m just making tacos, but my manager told me that he usually doesn’t have employees with my level of enthusiasm and that I could really go places within the company. I have this one idea … it’s sort of like the Crunchwrap Supreme, but it’s literally just two crunchy tacos inside the quesadilla tortilla. Genius, right? Not only would that taste incredible, but Taco Bell wouldn’t even have to buy any additional product … plus assembly would be a snap. My manager beamed when I told him that one.
Besides my awesome Taco Bell career ahead of me, I’ve got a lot more to be happy about. I recently got married to the most beautiful person I’ve ever met. We have two children and they’ve actually been aging at 1.5 times the normal rate, meaning that my 3 and 6 year old are actually 4 and 9 years old. I can’t wait for my 60th birthday when I’m going to be the same age as my first-born … every year after that she’ll be able to give ME advice about getting older!
You’d think that with all those things going on, my life couldn’t possibly get better, right? WRONG! Just last week I came into a windfall of HTC EVO View 4G Tablets. And when I say windfall I mean like 400,000 of them. Literally. I gave a few away to my friends and family, but mostly I’ve just been playing football with them. Boy I love football.
