Upgrade wifi only adam to 3g? - Adam General

One would think the main boards for the adam would be the same. If not there would be a.different fcc filing for each board correct? With that being said, the mini pci port should be on all boards and therefore upgradeable with the same broadband 3g card.
If this makes sense please share some insight, and if you feel that I am absolutely on the wrong track please street me in the correct direction.

I think you can add it, but why not get it to begin with if you want it so much?

Not necessarily wanting to or needing to upgrade. The cost of the module is pretty much the price difference between wifi to 3g. My post was more geared towards does it sound possible. Who knows, maybe somewhere down the road one of us lucky owners would like to upgrade and this would prove to be a helpful post.

Jason

I'm hoping for other options, radios, perhaps 4G. But my concern is if the "antenna" is still in units without 3G?

I wouldn't think the antenna is an issue. You can buy the same Ericsson card on ebay, incl. Antenna. Seeing how the original setup is "wired" ith tape, I don't expect ny issues here.

Thanks, Found the cards, but none mention the antenna.
Would be great to find a TMobile or CDMA compatible version of these..

Got the green light to get a hermes!

So, after discussing the options to repair my old blue angel (cracked digitizer ), the accountant (AKA The Wife(tm)) gave me the green light to get a hermes.
My question: Which one to get? I know of the first generation having the touchscreen problems and loose keyboards, but I can't seem to find anything that identifies the models that have these problems.
I see on ebay and various places the occasional Softbank. I am aware of the "dangers" of getting a softbank that is not unlockable/flashable, but with a price usually considerably lower than the other versions of the phone (HTC, Vodaphone, etc), they are tempting, but if they are already unlocked, I question the ability of the unit to accept different ROM's.
Anyone have any advice on what to look for/versions to avoid? Thanks!
Why don't you get the HTC TyTN II aka HTC Kaiser?
I would wait until the Kaiser is out and get that. It will be the latest and no need to upgrade for a while.
If you're sure you want to go with a Hermes (nothing wrong with that) instead of waiting on the Kaiser, take a look at this wiki page for problems with different models. At this point I don't think there are really any major problems on the newest models.
Also, when I shopped around for mine the 8525 was generally the cheapest available here in the states. If you go with an 8525, maybe look for an AT&T branded phone, as that should be one of the newest production models (won't get stuck with an old one with alignment issues).
Well, as much as I would love to get a Kaiser, the cost is high enough that it is not really an option. I'm seeing the Hermes going for around $400 to $500 used, with pre-orders for the Kaiser for almost $800. I may try to go that route still.
I've looked at the wiki, however, as is the case, sometimes people don't have the time to update it, so I thought I'd check with those who are currently using them now.
And the 8525... I've avoid that one. Something about AT&T/Cingular removing features from the phone and the fact that I'm seeing a more of those for sale over any other model kind of worries me.
I really like the look of the softbank, I'm just worried that if I get one unlocked, that it was done in a way that would prevent me from flashing a custom ROM on it.
Well, I recently bought a Softbank X01 for myself. The stock I got seems to have been made in July and so far it's performing nicely. The ebay seller said it was unlocked for use on the networks in my area (Rogers Canada) and sure enough it is. It also came flashed with a Dopod ROM of WM6 which was a bonus for me, as I 've never flashed ROMs onto things before.
The only problem was the keyboard layout didn't match what the software thought it was -- that is to say, I just had to tweak which keyboard version I had installed and then all symbols on hardware keyboard were in correct position.
If it helps, here's the seller I got it from. I did the local pickup, but they apparently have shipping too.

For the record, the only thing different about the 8525 is the lack of the front facing VGA 3G video camera. Since there is no 3G video call capabilities in the US, there's no need to have it. The 8525 is a HERM100 device. See here for an explanation.
The likely reason that they are available all over is the fact that AT&T subsidizes the cost of the phone. For instance, I can buy the phone through my business account for $300 with free activation, free shipping, etc. If I wasn't lazy, I'd pay the $300 and sell it on ebay. Also, the 8525 is the only one available from a carrier in the US. So if you're looking on ebay.com, that's just what you're going to see. Just like you'd probably see a lot of Dopods in south east Asia.
There's nothing wrong with the 8525. Other than the front camera, the only differences between the 8525 and any other Hermes is purely cosmetic. I've had mine for 6 months, and it's been rock solid.

Thank you, that's good to know. I do have to admit that the price difference is considerable enough that it is tempting.
I would just hate to get one then tomorrow T-Mo/AT&T/some new carrier named grasshopper announces that they are rolling it out in my area.
I'm sure the chances of that happening are about as much as a little man dressed in red starting a brisk trade in ice skates, but one never knows.
Is there any software that makes use of the front camera if one is not using it for video calls?
Oh, I can't seem to find an answer on this one either: Can the hermes make/take a voice call while the data (GPRS/EDGE/whatever) is active?
The 8925/"Tilt" is coming out on Monday. The price difference will likely only be $100 to $150. I'd probably go with the Tilt instead if it is within your budget.
It can take voice calls when the data is active. Most of us probably keep the data connections active all the time.
You can take a call while using data, but if you're on GPRS/EDGE the data will disconnect while you're on the call, but automatically reconnect. If you're in 3G coverage you can use both at the same time. I'm pretty sure that's true for any phone though. I don't believe T-Mobile in the US has rolled out any 3G coverage either.
OK, thanks for all the info. It's given me some things to consider and think about.

Any resolution to the X1's poor reception...

...because at the moment I'm handing my phone back tomorrow morning & reverting to my old N95. Where my N95 gives me full HSDPA signal, I battle to maintain EDGE on the Xperia...
Never has a much-anticipated (and EXPENSIVE) purchase left me so sour... I've flashed to the latest software via SEUS & played around with the different radio versions here - all to no avail... am I missing something?
mine's got great reception
as good as both my gf's nokias
I never had bad reception so far. Beats my old N95 hands down.

I think what we both missed was Bonnie Cha of CNET telling us not to buy it. I didn't see her review until after I bought it.
She didn't exactly say not to buy it, but there was a lot of hinting between the lines.

The only reason she was hinting to, was that $800 is a god-damn-it price for a handset.
But when it comes for the quality and capabilities, she was giving her big WoW's
And i NEVER had bad reception, YET i'm enjoying HSPDA most of the time
Reception depends on many things.
Sometimes I get little problems inside buildings but had nothing to compare.
I must say X1 is fine on receiption aspect...
I'm on ATT with an X1a and I get dropped calls all day no matter where I am in the SF Bay Area. Even my iPhone 3G has better signal than this phone (at least it holds calls). Pretty sad. Anyone try the Raphael radios with any luck?
Wow, I hope i'm not jinxing myself...but my reception is excellent...im in NYC on att...very few problems..I think i've had 2 dropped calls ever.
x1 is king
try this one ......new xperia radio

Xoom Wifi Preorder

B&H online store is serving up preorders for wifi xoom.
Assuming OP can't post links....

There you go.
Where else will they be selling the WiFi only version?
I am thinking about returning my 3G Verizon Xoom for the WiFi version. The WiFi tethering of my EVO makes the contract and cancellation fees a little silly. I know that in a year I will want what is newer and faster and thinner, so signing up for the Verizon Contract is scaring me a little bit.
Is B&H the only online order location? I guess I also saw Staples might have them in stores on the 27th?

Are you absolutely certain of this? I have not seen detailed specifications showing the lack of a gps on the tablet, and actually according to this motorola developer site, it does. EDIT: Due to the anti-spam restrictions, I am unable to post the link. However, search the motorola dev site for the MZ604 and you should be able to see the specs that I am referring to.

Hmm, well are you really going to use a wifi only model outside of your home or work? Or for navigation? Your phone should already have that capability, with 3G data and wifi
BH also shows the wifi version as having 512mb of ram. The moto sight says it has 1gig of ram and gps..

I have a xoom 3G and the GPS works GREAT! 200x better then my $400.00 GPS system in my auto. I understood the WY FY version of the xoom was to be the same as the 3G unit, If it isnt, I wouldnt buy the WY FY xoom. I dont see why the WYFY xoom would have less memory then the 3G xoom eather. I dont use the 3G on my tablet it is unlocked. Its nice however to have the 3G/4G xoom model as you can (if you choose) pay a month to month data plan (without contract) vacationing or travel, then cut it off again when you get back home.

Signal boosting case?

Those stickers are placebos anyways. There is no case that I know of that can boost. But avoid any metal or aluminum body cases, those cause a decrease in signal strength.
Your best bet is to try different radios depending on where you are. Some have more success with the .22 radio than the .33 and some say the most recent .54 works best. It really is a crapshoot with that and where you reside. Good luck.

Those stickers are a scam. You can find the exact same stickers sold to increase gas mileage if you stick 'em to your car.
I can't see how a case would enhance the signal, only attenuate it.
I remember buying my Sony w810i, and the dealer swore up and down that these stickers would double the phones signal. I told him I wasn't interested unless he had a watermelon scratch and sniff version.
Can't believe these things are still being sold, and even more shocking is there are idiots out there buying them.

Nexus 6P for my Son B'day.

Hello,
I am an old guy, so please excuse me, I don't have much idea about the latest technologies.
Recently, I bought Nexus 6P for my son's B'day from Amazon.com. I only knew that phone has to be unlocked to worked internationally,aAnd my son lives in India.
Now, I bought Nexus 6P Silver, 128GB Unlocked (I will put the Amazon link at the bottom), and one of my neighbor's son was telling that the LTE or 4G and 3G might not work in India, because of Frequencies are different in India and stuff. He was saying that the Nexus 128GB US Version is different or something. All I know is, he uses Vodafone in India and I guess he use internet, but I am not sure if he uses 4G or 3G or something else.
That neighbor's son ask me to ask here because people here are knowledgeable (except me, haha) , who can guide me.
I already bought the phone and I will be leaving for India around 1st June. Let me please know, what you all think.

Hi old guy,
You can use willmyphonework.net which is pretty good for checking this type of information.
Seems your son will not be able to use 4GLTE on either the GLobal or the Nth AMerica version using that network? But, He'll be able to use 2G and 3G no worries according to the site. Awesome phone, I would have thought he'd be well chuffed if he's into tech. If he's not, maybe the Samsung would have been better.
According to that site It works for 4G on idea cellular, maybe on Reliance Jio.
Cheers.

Hey, thanks for the reply.
That's what I saw that only Idea will work in India. But what about Reliance Jio, Relaince Jio is not released yet and there is no information about frequencies. I think he will be happy with 3G, he was previously having Nexus 5 and he's keep complaining about the low space. That's why I grabbed 128GB. And yes, he loves tech, he is studying computer science, so I guess.
I am not sure if I can return the Phone back to Amazon, as I already bought it. So I guess let it be, I hope 4G LTE will not make that huge difference. What you think.
Edit: And Good Lord! This phone is huge. I mean it is not completing getting inside my pocket. Will there be any risk of it getting bending or probably break in two like that ?
Edit 2: And I would love you can suggest me a good shockproof case for 6P if you already own this device. I don't want him asking more money rolleyes if he drops it. And is screen protector required ? (Sorry for so many edits). Thanks.

Yep. They're big. Once you go big, you find it difficult to go back as they are just more compelling to view. Don't do anything stupid with it, and it won't break in two.
I truly hope your son loses his **** in happiness and has a great birthday surprise, but you might consider going about tech presents differently next time. Tech heads put in a lot of research into the exact and most suitable phone for their individual and particular situation. I'll let my wife buy me anything else... You should see some of the dumbass stuff she's dressed me in over the years. But I ask strongly for her to never buy me tech without checking first. Anyway, tech sort of keeps us awake at night. The Live Cases are very good looking, but I doubt they can take a good impact. I use a Spigen Rugged Armor case (link here). Spigen cases in general are excellent at absorbing impact while also looking decent at the same time. I also use a tempered glass screen protector by @intelliARMOR (link here). This screen protector is even beyond awesome. The oleophobic is terrific and feels even better than stock screen. And it's tempered glass too so you don't have to worry about impacts or scratches.

No, I am not Amazon prime member. I don't use Amazon much, I buy stuff like 2-3 times in a month. Like book, and household stuff.

Sidenote: I am an Amazon addict. I have had Amazon Prime and bought stuffs every other days for the past three years.

Hi old guy,
You can use willmyphonework.net which is pretty good for checking this type of information.
Cheers.

Hey,
I posted the same post on reddit too ( I will give you link at the bottom), and the first guy saying that the 3G will also not working or something. But according to the site which you gave me shows that 3G will work.
It's so much confusing.

Trust me on this, no one would be happy with a 3G phone. 6P packs a 5.7incher and assuming that your son would use the phone avidly, it would hardly give 3-4hrs screen on time. I highly suggest you to return it.
PS: How old is your son? I won't advice this phone for teens.

He is 22. And what I have seen, 4G is still not very much available in India. 4G is available in main cities, but when you travel to less popular city, it will turn to 3G. Only Airtel and Vodafone is offering 4G till now and that too, it is not country wide.
I am just confused and wanted to know, if 3G will work.

One manual way to check is to look at several carriers in India and see if you can find out what band they support. You need both the band number and the frequency to know if the phone supports that specific band. It's a bit tedious, but will give you a definite answer.
