My Atom thinks the earphones are plugged in when they aren't.
If I answer the phone, no sound, presumably because it thinks the earphones are plugged in and is trying to use those.
Activating the start menu or media player has no sound.
The FM Radio starts (which will only happen if it thinks the earphones are plugged in).
But they are not plugged in.
I am currently on ROM 20060426B1WWE.
The same thing happened on ROM 20060105B1WWE, the first ROM I upgraded to.
I know what you're going to say, that there is a hardware fault, either with the earphone connector or the speakers simply don't work.
Firstly, the speakers do still work. If I start the FM radio and set the little button at bottom left to use the speakers as well, they work.
As for the earphone connector, when I had the problem on the 0105B1 ROM, I could fix the problem by performing a hard reset. Sadly this doesn't fix the problem with the latest ROM, but I'm pretty sure that a hard reset doesn't fully reset the device's configuration.
So I'm pretty sure this is not a hardware issue. I think the OS keeps track of whether the earphones are plugged in, and this has got out of sync somehow.
The last time it happened, I did the following:
While I was playing an mp3 and listening with the earphones, I pulled out the connector and the speakers did not start to play as I think they should have. Now, as I said above, it thinks the earphones are connected all of the time.
Anyone seen anything similar, or have an idea of what I can do? I rang O2 and while they admit it is probably a s/w problem, they want me to send the Atom to them. I don't want to be without it for a week or so because it is my phone and I rely on it. So I thought I'd try here.

I've got the exact same issue once...
But the problem i found for mine was that SOMEHOW when I plug out the headset jack, the slightly retarded Atom thinks I have not..
Just plug in the headset again and pull it out slowly... Then try out the phone if its back to normal...
It seems that the Atom is slow in picking up the disconnected headset...

I think this is one of the biggest problems with any style of MS Windows. They want to cache everything for the sake of performance, and the cache gets out of sync with the thing it's caching. In this case I bet it tries to keep track of the earphone state internally. But if it misses an event like unplugging them, the internal state is different from the thing it is trying to cache.
Anyway, down off the soapbox.
I'll keep in mind what you said, and try it a few times over the next few days.
I might end up having to send it to O2 (all the way up to @#$%^! Queensland) so they can lose it, or replace it with some questionable one that they haven't fixed properly, or god knows what else.

For anyone listening out there, the problem has gone away.
I don't really know why.
The only thing I did out of the usual was to turn Bluetooth on. The timing was perfect for me to think that this is what must have fixed the problem.
Do you think that might have fixed it? No I don't either.
And I'm reluctant to try to get it back into that state to see if this fixes it because I'm not that confident that this has fixed it.
I sure hope someone else has this problem and O2 or Microsoft hear about it.
I had the exact same problem you did. I fixed mine by very gently running a paperclip around the inside of the audio jack. Problem Solved!!!

hi guys i faced the same problem last week and i had to get it reparied from the repair shop and they informed me that the jack it not working properly and they will replace it with other jack which is used in sonyerricson cell phones as it is the same. I have got it done and now i have no problem.

i tried the paper clip idea and it worked.
About 5mm inside the earphone jack, on the side closest to the USB port, you can feel a small 'bump' (lets call it the g-spot!) as you run over it with the paper clip. Do this with an MP3 playing or something and voila.....the music comes out of the speaker again and the phone rings, i can talk to people again. Seems there is a fault in recognising whether the earpiece is plugged in or out as many have suggested.

Even a tooth pick would do :shock: Have not been using my FM radio but decided to try and got this problem! Was carful not to "short" anything inside so used a toothpick and it worked :lol:
Hi, mine is doing exactly the same thing and did intermittently for a while. Now I cannot get phone audio at all! I have even tried flashing the ROM and still nothing. Works perfectly with portable hands free. Do you think the audio plug is shot? Thanks.

Even mine problem got resolved automatically. I faced it 2 weeks back.

hey ive also had this problem...the only thing is that my phone doesnt think it has the headset plugged in because when i open the FM radio it says insert headset...it works when the headset is in and when its on speaker phone but other than that i cannot hear the person...i dropped my phone and this happened....i tried all the methods mentioned but its not fixing the problem...im guessing it could be hardware but the speaker and everything still works except for when your in a call...any ideas?

i have the same problem. it's like the earphone jack is stuck because the fm radio works even without the earphones. sometimes this registry setting works sometimes it does not let me know if it works for you/anybody...

even i had this problem in my atom exec a few weeks back sorry i saw this now and for a pemanent solution for it is dont put anything inside just apply very little coconut oil on the handsfree connecter and then connect it to ur phone and keep removing and reinserting it for a couple of times and it will work for sure this happens due to dust or some particles getting stuck between those connectors not allowing the mechanism to work correctly hope it helps beacuse toothpick trick works fine but its temp and reoccur

I have the same problem and was very sad until trying the toothpic trick, even thought If I hit my pocket the problem returns, so I will try your recomendation, thanks!

Yes it is a hardware problem. The headphone socket is faulty.

same problem goes to me to.. at first i'm quite shocked..there might be something damaged..then i insert a tooth pick (scared if i use paperclip could short the electrical terminal inside..) into the earphone jack.hoping a miracle to happen, then few moments, my atom back to normal..
One day when I plugged out my headphones from my phone it didn't seem to notice it. I couldn't get any sound from the speakers, and when I plugged the headphones back in nothing happend, like it didn't notice they were gone. I rebooted my phone several times and still no sound from the speaker. Even the radio (which you need headphones to use), works when I disconnect them (except no sound of course).
It's probably a software bug. Any ideas?
UPDATE: It seems to work now

I've been having headphone problems for a while, (it kept asking me what was plugged in with nothing plugged in). Up to now, it didn't hurt too much, but today it finally made my Omnia II unusable and I had to put my SIM in an old backup phone.
In the past, I've tried sticking a needle on the physical contact to "exercise" it, and putting some WD-40 and alcohol on it with a toothpick. Today, however, nothing worked. I ended up taking the phone apart, (since it was unusable I figured I had nothing to lose), and found that the headphone jack is a single component with a ribbon cable and connector to the main board. I found an online store selling this headphone part via Google and have ordered it, (I had to buy three as that was the minimum--if they work, I'm keeping them all as future replacements, sorry). I won't say what store because I don't know them or if this will fix the problem, but if they deliver and it works, I'll re-post with details. I really hope this fixes the problem because I've spent a *lot* of time and money getting this phone up to replacing my old Palm TX and was expecting it to be around for a few more years...no other mobile OS does what I want right now and I'm totally fine with the O2 hardware/software other than this bloody headphone issue.
I received my new headphone jacks yesterday and replaced the one on my phone. And...it works!
The new jacks are a different design. The "plug-in" sensor is at the top now and the whole thing is a lot tighter. Also, when I plug something in, (I tried headphones and a headset--not TV out), it no longer asks you what's plugged in. It seems to auto-sense the type of plug fine.
It's only day 1, but my phone is usable again. Yay!
The store I bought the jacks from is globaldirectparts.com. I had to buy three jacks, but it only ran about $20US. I'm keeping the others as spares in case this ever happens again as I plan to hold on to this phone for a few more years, (bought off contract).
After getting the back off and exposing the internals, I was able to just lift the top edge of the main boards with a popsicle stick use a small, flat screwdriver to unplug the old jack. I then slid the new jack in, made sure it was lined up, (it does this pretty much on it's own--not much wiggle room), and pushed down on the board until it "clicked" on.
Alright, I finally got my hands on an Atrix (used). Super excited great price. I get it home and realize the audio jack doesnt work!! Well after messing around with it I find it works intermittently. If its working and I tap the phone it stops working. So I figured I probably had a bad solder or broken connection. It was actually corrosion.
To verify that your problem is in fact hardware related go to settings>sound>media audio effects. You will see 'Wired Stereo Devices' and 'Phone Speaker'. If you plug headphones into the audio jack on your atrix you should the word 'connected' immediately pop up under 'Wired Stereo Devices'. If you do not and the the word 'connected' stays under 'Phone Speaker' then you probably have this problem.
You will need to opened up your phone by removing the 8 (i think) T5 screws from the back of your phone (remove the back cover, battery, sim and sd card first!)
Then carefully separate the back plastic piece from the face of the phone. Start at the bottom where there is a little latch you need to free with a small straight blade screw driver or electronics tool. Carefully work them apart and your phone should look like the pics below.
THe headphone jack stays with the backplate and the connections to the board stay with the screen part of the phone.
I first used a q-tip with a small amount of alcohol to clean the connectors on both parts. Then I used some fine sand paper. BE CAREFUL NOT TO BREAK OFF OR OVER bend the leads on the input side. Once those are clean you can add a small amount of dielectric grease to the connection surfaces to prevent corrosion from happening again. You may also want to bend out the connection leads slightly so they get a better connection. The circuit board side on my phone had warped away from the leads. Put it back together and you should be in business. I just repaired mine and it seems to work great.

No problem. I would like to report that my Atrix provided me with great output from the headphone jack all day today! Its working awesome.

Contributing my own experience, since this thread popped up when I was searching for help. My Atrix 4g headphone jack stopped working completely 2 days ago. I tried 3 different sets of headphones (all confirmed to be working on other devices) to no avail. I even uninstalled some recently updated apps like TuneIn Radio Pro to no avail.
So, after reading this thread and confirming the phone is not recognizing the jack being plugged, I concluded that it is a physical obstruction. With a flashlight I carefully (one eye shut) peeked around the headphone jack hole itself. I could see there was some lint in there at the very bottom. Next I took a hairpin, using pliers, created a tiny "L" at the end of it...ya you know where this is going.... Went fishing at the bottom of the hole and ever so gently removed a STRIP OF LINT!! It was about 1/4 inch long, but guess what? After removal and trying headphones EUREKA, success! The headphones are working as expected.
Just offering this as another root cause for headphone jack not working. Be aware of lint! And don't mess up your phone by fishing too hard in there

Used a paper clip and got a HUGE piece of lint out! Reps!
My Bluetooth headset sounds fine, but when I have something plugged into my Atrix's headphone jack it clicks and pops. It does recognize that something is plugged into the headphone jack though. I looked and there isn't lint or anything in the jack. Is there a chance I could have some mild corrosion?
Thanks jaymondus & slowjett. I thought my phone had a hardware issue and had to be taken for service. Thankfully, the lint was the problem in my case too. I easily removed it using a long pin. After this, I also carefully used a vaccum cleaner to remove any left over tiny lint traces inside the heaphone port.

Thanks for the help, unfortunately I wasn't able to get the headphone jack working on my atrix. I think my problem is slightly different though, I dropped the phone with headphones in and it landed right on the top such that it pushed the headphones even further down into the jack. Ever since then it only detects the headphones if I push on them and hold them down, as soon as I let go it goes back to playing through speakers.
I guess I'll just have to live with not being able to use headphones until I get a new phone
This is exactly why the headphone jack is not actually soldered to the MBO. First, it is much more likely to spare the MBO any damage, and second, makes for very easy replacement, to the point where you can just order the new part and do it at home.
The headphone jack itself is a separate part that is held in place with some adhesive tape. If you disassemble as in the op and pull it out you can easily replace it. I swapped mine out in about 5 minutes the other day.

Who would wonder that so much time after this topic would still be useful. Yes, I *still* keep and use my Atrix, it is my favourite phone from all time, even though I have had two newer models after it.
These days I decided that the Atrix would be a nice MP3 Player to use in the gym, but when I plugged the wired earphones in the jack guess what? It was fortunate that I was at home and not in the gym when I realized that the sound was *not* coming from the earphones.
So, googling for a solution I found this topic. After reading the first post I unassembled, cleaned and reassembled it twice. After each try it worked for a bit but became faulty really soon again. Then I decided to read on, and read the posts about the lint inside the phone jack. That was all my problem since the beginning, which I solved with an unfolded paper clip.
Now my Atrix is a MP3 player, a desk clock together with the dock, and a gaming handheld for emulators when attached to my icontrolpad. Thanks for everyone that posted here.

One morning I got up and tried to plug my earphones, and I couldn't! The plug just won't come to the end! I played with screwdriver in audio jack as I thought maybe something got stuck in there, but still the same. Has anyone experienced this problem?
Have you tried with another headset? You might just have a defective phone Jack on either end. If it is the phone, then you will just have to send it to get fixed. If you still under warranty it should be covered.

Yes, I have a lot of earphones and none of them plugged in. I bought it on ebay, so no warranty. No one had this issue?
I have had the same problem. You are not the only one. This problem actually is very annoying. When I hit the play button I assume I would hear it from the ear-phone but nothing happens and then I know the music is playing out via the phone's speaker. This causes embarrassment from time to time.
I normally make sure the battery cover is tightly closed then always insert the ear-phone's jack in while the lead/cable pointing outwards from the phone. In other words, no side insertions. I hope I managed to cross my point about how to insert the ear-phone's jack.
I never had any problems if I followed my own above instructions.

No, problem is bigger. I cannot insert headphones at my phone, so no connection between phone & headset. That means no way music could play through headset. If anyone had this problem please help me out.

My headphones work fine. But the adapter has never seated all of the way in the socket the way that I would expect it to. Sorry to hear you are having those problems.

I just bought a cheap on-ear headphone and same thing happened but when I opened the battery cover and put it back on ensuring the top part is tightly secured it then started working again.
Other than something might stuck there, as the other poster mentioned, the battery cover might be causing your problem. Yes, from time to time I felt the jack was not going in but after fiddling with it gently I managed to plug it. Don't use force, try different sides by holding the top of the jack and go clock wise slightly then try it ti plug it, repeat until you find the right angle.

I took a thin pipe cleaner, doused one end in rubbing alcohol and cleaned the inside. Took out a couple gobs of lint and it worked perfectly. Try that. Wait a couple minutes if you do for the alcohol to evaporate before plugging into the jack. Good luck.
I had this issue a few months ago, but like was previously said, it's an issue with the back cover not clicking on properly because there's a very tiny clip that locks in to where the phone jack goes to let the headphone jack clip in the whole way.
Also, because it's constantly exposed outside of the phone, a lot of small dust and crap can get inside, so that can sometimes be a culprit too.
Pocket lint. I had this problem as well. I had pocket lint packed way down in the headphone jack.

So, I cleaned with a spirit my headphone jack, and for like 20minutes I could plug earphones and they were playing nicely from phone, then they started cutting off for some time, and at end again no contact. I tried this procedure a couple of times and as spirit soaks down the problem appears again. Any more suggestions guys? The problem isn't solved

Unfortunately too perfectly for me. Now I have a permanent headset logo on my status bar, even when nothing is plugged in. So I can't hear anything out of my ear piece.
Does anyone know how to resolve this?
Apparently i didnt dry enough of the alcohol. Solved my problem by blowing cold air for a few seconds using a hair dryer.

Hey guys, about a week ago my headphone jack on my Atrix quit working. I've checked around the forums, and people were having this issue a year ago, but I've switched roms multiple times and I've determined that it is NOT a software issue.
The thing is, I've had the phone for a year, I pay the insurance on it, the only thing is, it's rooted and it has an unlocked bootloader, so I'm not sure if ATT will be able to help me out on this one. Anyone know if they'd still be able to give me a replacement? Or should I just call it quits, get out my G1, put my music on there, and use it as my music player.
I don't know if that's going to help, but I had the same problem on my SGS Captivate. Rebooting didn't help, but when I left it switched of for the night it fixed. The same was with my atrix, the earpiece wasn't producing a single sound, tried rebooting, even some market earpiece cleaning apps (something with making some sort of sound which should help dust or stuff fall out), nothing worked, and again, took out the battery and left it for the night. In the morning it worked again.

Alright I will try that tonight.
I had my headphone jack give out, it was because the headphone plug doesn't fit in flush, so in my pocket there was too much pull on it and it bent the contact inside the phone. If you look into the headphone jack on the side near the scree you'll see the contact. Does it look squished? If so you'll need to disassemble the back of the phone and pull it back out. I was able to repair mine, however I also invested in some good bluetooth headphones so I wouldn't have to worry about it anymore.

I had to do the same. It wasn't difficult, I just had to go get a little Torx screwdriver.
Clean it using some cleaner (alcohal) and cotton swab or some thing. Its just a simple rust problem. Report back with results.

it is pocket lint in the headphone jack.
I got a can of compressed air and sprayed it in the jack.
the lint flew out and all is good.
I have had this problem with just about every phone I have owned.
This is exactly what happened to me. I used the tweezers on my mini pocketknife and just pulled out all the lint that had gotten compacted into the bottom.
I still didn't manage to fix mine atrix jack.

Mine stopped working this week out of the blue. All I know for a fact is that I am never buying a Motorola/Nvidia phone ever again in my life.
I just had the same thing happen today. I first tried changing roms, but no change. When I start music or audio with headphones in, I get a staticy noise. I'm currently cleaning it out and checking out the connections. I'll let you guys know what I figured out.
Edit: Checked for lint, and bent the four or five cross connectors outward. Still having the problem. My next step is to get my hands on some rubbing alcohol.
I checked everything, and replaced the headphone jack, and it's still not working. All I get is a static noise.
Any ideas?

it is pocket lint in the headphone jack.
I got a can of compressed air and sprayed it in the jack.
the lint flew out and all is good.

This is true, however I removed my Jack out of my phone. Then with dental pick and compressed air, I cleaned it and installed it back in. Now for protection .....
